▼ This study evaluated the diversity of the genus Eurydice on sandy beaches in South Africa by analysis of morphological as well as genetic data. Type specimens of the three Eurydice species currently known from South Africa, E. longicornis, E. kensleyi and E. barnardi were obtained from the Museum für Naturkunde in Berlin and the Iziko Museum in Cape Town, South Africa. These specimens were studied in order to become familiar with their morphology. Eurydice individuals obtained from 30 sites spanning the South African coast, from Port Nolloth on the north-west coast to Bhanga Nek on the north-east coast were then examined. The two species E. kensleyi and E. barnardi, as well as four new morphospecies (A, B, C and D) were discriminated from these individuals by suites of morphological character types. Morphospecies A, B, C and D were therefore delimited according to the Phenetic Species Concept. None of the Eurydice individuals examined exhibited the same suite of characters as E. longicornis. Molecular sequences of two mitochondrial markers, cytochrome c oxidase 1 and 16S rRNA were analysed using both distance- and monophyly based methods. Uncorrected p-distances, a Minimum Spanning Haplotype Network and Maximum Likelihood phylogenetic trees were investigated to determine genetic diversity and phylogenetic relationships in the six Eurydice morphospecies. Results from the genetic analysis made it possible to delimit morphospecies A B, C and D as phylospecies A, B, C and D according to the Phylogenetic Species Concept, thereby validating the species status of four new Eurydice species, provisionally called Eurydice A, Eurydice B, Eurydice C and Eurydice D. This increases the total number of Eurydice species from South Africa to seven, of which six form part of the macrofauna of sandy beaches. The outcomes of this study represent an important step in the resolution of the taxonomy of the genus Eurydice in South Africa and enhance current knowledge of the biodiversity of sandy beach macrofauna, thus facilitating better-informed decisions on conservation policies and management to the benefit of conservation of biodiversity on sandy beaches in South Africa.

The applicability of the open source model XBeach was tested for pocket beaches in this paper. First, schematized model setups have been used to assess the performance of XBeach qualitatively. It was found that adjustments of the initial bed were required to obtain the expected hydrodynamic conditions. The default sediment advection calibration factors had to be increased to obtain the expected morphological response of the pockets (stationair: 0.15, surfbeat: 0.30). The results have shown that the surfbeat mode outperforms the stationary mode based on a qualitative assessment. It was furthermore found that wave-current interaction produced unreliable results and should be avoided when modelling pocket beaches using XBeach. Non-hydrostatic simulations produced significantly more sedimentation behind the headlands due to the inclusion of diffraction. This mode was found to produce unexpected erosion at the upper shoreface however, indicating the inapplicability of the sediment transport formulas in non-hydrostatic simulations. Expansion of the classic pocket beach into two adjacent pocket beaches showed that these systems have to be treated as a complete system if interactions between these pockets are expected (separated by a salient). It was found that an individual assessment is adequate if a tombolo separates the pockets. Second, the morphological developments between the year 2000 and 2015 at Tanjong Beach (Singapore) were modelled using XBeach. For the modelled bed level changes, which were compared to bathymetric measurements, a ‘Good’ Mean-Squared Error Skill Score of 0.31 was found. In the prepared model, the obtained sediment advection calibration factors from the first part were used and model calibration was not performed. Based on the schematizations and the case study performed in this study, XBeach was found to be applicable for long term process-based modelling of pocket beaches.

▼ The development of contemporary societies is supported by an intense maritime activity, resulting in a natural attraction for the settlement of populations along the coast. This preferential location along the coastlines requires the creation of coastal defense solutions that allow the development of different activities installed with adequate security. In coastal areas the threats are mostly environmental / natural, with erosion, sea currents and rising sea levels among the issues that stand out. Some of these threats are aggravated by human action. The adaptation and mitigation of the effects resulting from the described threats should be based on studies and information that can complete the necessary data to characterize the Portuguese coast. The integrated and sustainable management of the coastal zone depends on access to relevant information that includes data and models with adequate spatial and temporal resolution. The work developed in this dissertation intends to contribute to the availability of information on the morphodynamics of pebble beaches. The study was carried out on a pebble beach on the north coast of the Madeira island. In the morphological characterization of the Juncos beach, topographic information was obtained, using a DGPS device to perform the surveys. The data were processed in AutoCAD Civil 3D, obtaining different beach morphologies registered in different dates. Using the AutoCAD program contour lines were drawn and three beach profiles were extracted at fixed positions. A model implemented in XBeach-Gravel program based on beach profiles data, tide and wave characteristics, allowed the simulation of the evolution of the beach during the monitored period. The study focused on a beach of pebble rolled of reflective morphodynamic state. From the modeling work carried out with the XBeach-G application, over a long period of time, it was not feasible, and also in a simulation with data manipulation for a short time. The characteristics of the beach ended up not being in line with the modeling application of the XBeach-G morphodynamic simulation. Advisors/Committee Members: Pinho, José L. S. (advisor).

▼ Processes governing the stability of Louisiana's rapidly deteriorating Gulf coast marsh were investigated. Vertical marsh accretion determined from 137 _Cs dating were compared to water level increase obtained from tide gauge data. In subsiding coastal environments the continued existence of marsh habitat is dependent on the ability of marsh to maintain elevation through vertical marsh accretion (mineral sediment and organic matter accumulation). Coast-wide average vertical accretion was 0.60 to 0.80 as compared to water level increase of over 1 cm year. Rapid water level increase, attributed primarily to subsidence, was 3 to 5 times greater than eustatic sea level changes reported to be 0.23 cm yr^-1 The measured accretionary deficits (difference between water level increase and vertical marsh accretion) parallels reported marsh disappearance of over 100 km2 yr ^-1Organic matter accumulation was identified as an important component of marsh aggradation in response to changes in water level. A appreciable amount of organic production of marsh macrophytes remains on the marsh as peat or is decomposed to carbon dioxide or methane. Organic matter on a dry weight basis constituted an increasing fraction of soil solids as its marine influence diminishes inland from the coast. Organic matter is of greatest structural significance in low density, fresh, and brackish marsh environments. However, on a unit volume basis, the organic matter occupies the same volumes in fresh, brackish, and salt marshes. Louisiana Gulf coast marsh will likely continue disappearing at a rapid rate unless means are implemented for distributing Mississippi River sediment to the marshes. The combined effect of rapid subsidence, eustatic sea level rise and accompanying salt water intrusion will likely destroy much of these marshes. Results presented may represent future conditions for many coastal regions of the world, which may experience a rapid rise in water level as a result of the predicted "greenhouse" warming and resultant accelerated worldwide sea level rise.
