▼ This study is based on restoration of Kinmen coast fishing village of hydraulic model test of a comparative analysis of the planned project, as a result of long-term by Kinmen County coast north-east monsoon and the impact of ocean currents. In recent years, many coastal erosion and land damage case of loss. In order to avoid continued erosion, Kinmen county government since starting in 1990 for rebuild seawall to protect the coast. This paper is mainly due to a new erosion of lake waters near the fishing village, and a result of Economic Planning and Development Council's request for a hydraulic model test and do the related planning and research. In order to achieve the purpose of beach erosion does not continue to be
subject to planning.
It can be found from previous research to study, the tidal effects of drift sand to the scene by investigate multi-based; and laboratories in order to describe the phenomenon of the different drift sand sharply degrees and to examine the different size. The purpose of this study is the tidal waves of the beach bed on the role, which will be part of tidal changes in water level simulation.
Test results to a net drift of sand to make a comparative analysis of throughput and classified by Horikawa compared cross-section tank. The typhoon waves should be able to tell by the tidal waves but the bed is the rules of dramatic impacted. The monsoon is not much variance. In addition monsoon forecasting can be applied to multi-wave cross-section of the terrain slope changes. In addition it can be not exercised after the embankment of typhoon waves in Horikawa empirical section.

consiga despertar a vertente sensível do homem e

▼ As buildings age, their structural integrity must be assessed and reassessed at regular intervals to ensure the safety of their continued use and to advise on retrofits and repairs necessary for preventative maintenance and responsive repair. Historic buildings often contain plain reinforcement whereas modern buildings exclusively contain modern deformed reinforcement. Younger engineers in particular have not been trained with or worked with plain
bar. Modern American Concrete Institute (ACI) and Canadian Standards Association (CSA) Group codes largely do not contain adequate provisions to assess the structural integrity of many historic buildings.
Twenty-four beam-column joint specimens with four different hook configurations were tested under tension to compare the anchorage capacities of embedded plain and modern deformed 90° and 180° hooked bars. Six replicates of each configuration were tested to determine whether statistically significant differences at the 95% confidence level existed between the anchorage capacities of plain versus modern deformed hooked bars. Visual observations were documented manually to assess differences between crack patterns and observed failure modes.
Typical cracking patterns were observed for groups of both specimens containing 90° and 180° hooks. The degree of cracking observed aligned with results of similar studies. All specimens with 90° hooks failed by side blowout whereas those with 180° hooks failed by front blowout. No evidence of group effects (i.e. decreased anchorage capacity) was observed. Statistically significant differences in maximum normalized tensile load at the 95% confidence level were observed between 90° plain and modern deformed bars, wherein the plain bars had a 3.8 kN/MPa lower maximum; 180° plain and modern deformed bars, wherein the plain bars had a 5.6 kN/MPa lower maximum; and 90° and 180° modern deformed hooked bars, wherein the 90° bars had a 4.0 kN/MPa lower maximum. No statistically significant differences in displacement at maximum normalized load were observed.
An extensive replicate-based study of plain hooked
bar incorporating additional parameters (e.g. lead length, bend angle, etc.) is recommended. The value of the recommended work is in determining the sensitivity of hooked
bar performance to variations in these parameters.

▼ Philosophy, as we know it, is not restricted to a person or a place or a time. It is rather free thought under a rigorous system. This system differs with the circumstances, period, place, culture and people. Many would agree that Philosophy was first distinguished from myth or legend when it acquired scientific reasoning. Thus, it gained an ontological status and became an object of quest and fascination of many people. Later, many took the task of disciplining this new faculty and started speculating upon it. Aristotle, however, shone bright – together with Plato – and developed into a prominent figure so as to become ‘the’ teacher of this ‘skill’. He explored nature in all its areas, writing merely about every aspect and manifestation of natural phenomena and those beyond the natural. On the other hand, in the Far East, philosophy was also developing independently: in India, wisdom was sought after, as well as in China. In Persia, the prominent philosophy was imported from the East as well. The Syriacs were the first who were interested in the study of philosophy thus deserving the name “agents of civilization”. They exchanged trade and culture, trading wine, spices and silk from East to West, while bartering philosophy and sciences from West to East. They did this through the translation and commenting of Aristotle’s works. This gave birth to different schools: Edessa, Nisibis, Qenshrin, Harran and Rish’ain, to name a few. These were schools of thought where Ancient Greek philosophy found a space to emerge in Asia Minor, a space that was relatively neutral from a political stance. The works of translations were normally done by the clergy – especially monks in the monasteries – with a theological character and from a theological perspective to meet the needs of the Church. They also valued the medical writings of Galen and Aristotle and used the mathematical and astronomical studies of the ancient Semitic and Greek paganism in a new form. The Syriacs introduced philosophy in the Arabic environment. Even with the spread of Islam in the Near East, Islamic philosophers neither developed their own systems of philosophy nor expanded their philosophical ideas and thoughts. Islamic philosophy is not independent from the Ancient Greek philosophy since the Islamic philosophers were greatly influenced by the works of Aristotle (mainly) – and Plato – and their role was simply that of translations, commentaries and interpretations to which they added their opinions. The Christian Syriacs gained honor in the Persian and Arabic palaces and found a place of refuge at the courts of the kings and sultans. Moreover, philosophy to the Syriacs was rather a means and not an end. This is due to the fact that they were men of religious nature more willingly than scholars of philosophy even though they were interested in education and culture. The first Christian philosophical effort written in Syriac is said to be Bardaysan’s Laws of the Countries . St. Jacob of Edessa is also one early famous figure in the development of Syriac…

▼ The economy of Humboldt County, California, is dependent on substantial amounts of aggregate skimmed from the local gravel bars, but National Marine Fisheries states that the extraction produces excessive fine sediments, which disrupt salmon behavior, and possibly fill interstitial spaces in the riverbed, and reduce salmon egg viability. The objective of my study is to determine whether sand and gravel extraction from gravel bars is an adverse source of fine materials for spawning salmon before the rivers become opaque with turbid runoff from various other sources. Either a rainstorm or high flows that overtop the extraction surface could wash the fines off the extraction surface and fill interstitial spaces between spawning gravels or produce sediment plumes that disrupt the behavior of adult salmon. I used three tests to determine whether fine sediments are washed off the gravel
bar before the extraction surface is inundated by high flows. The tests included direct observation of sediment plumes, particle size analysis, and fluorescent-dyed sand tracers. A comparison of samples from gravel
bar surfaces before and after extraction, after the first rains of fall, and after inundation, revealed that there were significantly more coarse sands after extraction and after inundation than on the pre-extraction surface. The percentage of the finest sediments (less than ??? mm) was greater on the pre-extraction surface than on the post-extraction surface. The percentage of fines was not significantly different between post-extraction or after rains, or between the post-extraction and after- inundation samples. Fines from these gravel extraction surfaces were not directly a source of fine sediments in the first autumnal rains. In subsurface comparisons, there was a slightly higher percentage of coarse sands in the post-extraction sediments compared with after-rains sample. The use of stained particle tracers did not contribute to the understanding of sediment movement on gravel bars in this study. Stained particles settled when exposed to rain. I observed two sediment plumes from gravel bars in the course of this investigation. In one, the river was already turbid from a variety of sources as the river flowed across the extraction surface. However, the downstream edge of the O???Neill gravel
bar contained streamers of clear looking water and sediment plumes. The second sediment plume seemed to be from hyporheic flow at the edge between a haul road and a trench. Neither case fully supported the argument that fine sediments wash off the gravel bars.

▼ Aaron Copland's Short Symphony remains among the least performed of his works, this despite the fact that the composer considered it among his finest. This dissertation explores the work's history and reception, issues surrounding Copland's notation of meter and rhythm, and his approaches to metric notation. Freely adapting an analytical process developed by Lerdahl and Jackendoff in their 1983 book A Generative Theory of Tonal Music, the author proposes a method of metrical analysis by which Copland's meters can be stripped away, and new meters derived from the metrical weights inherent in the music itself. The result is a newly re-barred version of the Short Symphony's outer movements, scores of which are included as an appendix. It is the author's hope that this method can help illuminate other works with similar notational issues.

▼ The plasma membrane is a multicomponent mixture of lipids and proteins. Functional domains ("lipid rafts") that arise from nonrandom mixing of membrane components are believed to be important in governing the spatial organization of lipids and proteins. Proper compartmentalization of lipids and proteins is vital to facilitate cellular processes, such as signaling, endocytosis and trafficking. While evidence has shown that lipids play an integral role in protein-mediated processes, the chemical complexity of the plasma membrane and the dynamic nature of intermolecular interactions pose challenges for systematic investigations that aim to determine the interplay between lipids and proteins. Model membrane mixtures provide chemically simplified systems for studies of both lipid-lipid, and lipid-protein interactions. In four-component lipid mixtures that model the outer leaflet of the plasma membrane, we observed a nanoscopic-to-macroscopic transition of domain size and morphology by tuning lipid composition. Using fluorescence microscopy imaging of giant unilamellar vesicles (GUVs), we found that this nano-to-macro transition exhibits a regime of patterned fluid domains within the liquid coexistence region of this four-component system. Temperature-dependent FRET and microscopy studies strongly suggest that the patterned domains are thermodynamically stable, lending support for the existence of nanoscopic domains with possibly complex morphology in cellular plasma membranes. Together, our studies allude to a possible mechanism for cells to control domain size and morphology by merely changing lipid composition. The importance of lipids in facilitating cellular processes is evident from examining protein-mediated membrane remodeling events. Using in vitro liposome deformation and liposome binding assays, we examined the activation mechanism of pacsin-1, an F-
BAR domain protein enriched in neurons, by dynamin-1 PRD (prolinerich domain). While key basic residues in the PRD were vital to the activation of pacsin-1, we found that pacsin-1's membrane sculpting potential depends on membrane properties such as curvature and bending rigidity. In separate in vitro investigations of HIV-1 Gag-membrane associations, we found that lipid composition strongly affects Gag membrane affinity. These results highlighted the complex nature of protein-mediated membrane remodeling processes, which requires understanding both protein function and lipid phase behavior.

▼ This study is an attempt to combine Nietzschean thought with postmodernism
(already greatly influenced by Nietzsche) to take what I am calling a "pastiche approach."
I do not mean pastiche in the strictest sense of the word as simply a hodgepodge of
various things with little connection to one another but as a combination of modernist
schools of thought, such as the structuralists, with various postmodern and poststructural
"schools," such as those strains of thought coming from figures such as Jean Baudrillard,
Jean Francois Lyotard and Jacque Derrida. I am also referring to various methodological
approaches, such as ethnography, historical comparative, textual and content analysis and
positivistic approaches. These approaches are used in concert in order to paint a
"portrait" from a stance of Nietzschean perspectivism of barworkers as people operating
in cultural patterns both local and global.

▼ Mobile bed scaling (for scales smaller than 1:1) does not allow for ideal similarity between all nondimensional parameters. This leads to an exaggerated presence of one process over another or the development of scale effects. The complexity of the surf zone makes it especially difficult to separate and quantify the effect of sediment scaling on each individual process. As a result, the impact of sediment scaling on the holistic morphodynamic process is poorly understood. Profiles were obtained at TU Delft (scale 1:10) following the testing regime used during the SANDS project. This set made use of density and diameter scaled sediment (?s = 1200 kg/m3 and d50 = 0.52 mm); scaled according to the bed load model of Henriquez, Reniers et al. (2008). The set used for analysis here includes the Hannover (prototype scale 1:1) and Deltares (Froude scale 1:6) profiles obtained during SANDS. The present work looks to extend what is currently known about the impact of sediment scaling on nearshore transport processes. Three main objectives are identified: 1) Showing profile development and inferred transport rates, compare nondimensional parameters across the nearshore and surf zone; 2) Identify how spatial variance of dominate hydrodynamic and sediment transport regimes across the surf zone are influenced by the subsequent scaling; 3) Explain morphological differences due to scaling by observing the small scale transport process. Analysis of the profiles showed a marked degree of geometrical similarity between all three facilities. More specifically, the development of a bar-trough system and subsequent offshore migration. The transport rates were, however, divergent. Compared to Hannover, the transport rates at Deltares were low where conversely TU Delft was high. Using ideal scaling theories as a basis, the cross shore distribution of the nondimensional parameters at TU Delft suggested that both sediment mobility and near bed suspension were similar with prototype. However, due to a large fall velocity, the Dean number was underestimated. From the use of Froude scaling at Deltares, the nondimensional parameters suggested that neither near bed nor suspended load transport regimes were reproduced correctly. This can mostly be attributed to the rippled bed state and reduced Shields value. A simple depth and time averaged model was also used to decompose the sediment concentrations. These concentrations were used to check consistency of the nondimensional parameter agreement with the manifestation of the physical process. Inconsistent with the nondimensional results, TU Delft showed that near bed sediment mobility and suspension was high. It is believed this led to the exaggerated sediment fluxes. Concentrations at Deltares suggest the rippled bed introduced a thinned boundary layer which caused decreased sediment mobility and the decreased sediment fluxes.

▼ The power of drop-based microfluidics promises reduced biological assaying times and greater sample throughput; however, current drop-based microfluidic methods focus on single-input single-output techniques to provide these benefits. In order to achieve truly high-throughput analysis of biological assays, a multiple-input approach must be taken. This thesis is focused on developing and validating a drop-based microfluidic method that is capable of encapsulating, in parallel, 96 assay samples in drops and optically tracking them in a barcoded drop library. The advantage of the method presented here is its ability to be integrated with current biological assays performed on a 384-well plate. The first step was to fabricate a three-dimensional microfluidic device capable of accepting 96 sample inputs. Second, formation of drops within the device was characterized by creating a state diagram using Capillary and Weber numbers of the two phase flow. Finally, the use of fluorescent microbeads was investigated for the purpose of optically barcoding drops. A barcoding scheme was developed to allow for fluorescent and spatial labeling of 96 wells of a 384-well plate. The three-dimensional microfluidic device was successfully used to encapsulate 50 microns diameter drops from 24 wells barcoded with fluorescent microbeads at a drop formation rate of 3 kHz per well. Fluorescent detection of the barcoded drop mixture was performed at a rate of 200 Hz and density-based clustering algorithm DBSCAN was used to identify barcoded drop clusters from the fluorescent signal data. Validation of this method was achieved by adding known concentrations of fluorescent blue microbeads to barcoded wells and detecting for their presence in barcoded drop clusters. The barcoding method can be expanded to fully incorporate the 96 inputs of the microfluidic device by adding a spatial barcoding component to each quadrant of 24 optically barcoded wells. The results presented here show the microfluidic platform has the potential to be a useful tool in biological assays involved with tracking a large number of samples in a well plate format.

▼ This is a study of language and literacy in an ancient multi-lingual setting, Judaea in the years 63 B.C.E. - 136 C.E. It first surveys scholarly views on these topics, and then proposes a new method of investigating the questions raised: a study of the signed documents and letters discovered among the materials conventionally known as the "Bar Kokhba texts." The major sites where materials were discovered are reviewed, and the complex history of publication is examined for each site. The essential approach is that of "signature literacy," a well-established method for investigating the rates of literacy in societies of the past. The language of each signature is studied in relation to the language of the document to which it is attached, and analyzed to determine fluency of the writing. One thereby learns something about language knowledge and level of literacy for each signatory. In tandem with this approach significant efforts are made to elucidate the prosopography of the texts. A separate chapter considers the Bar Kokhba letters. The final chapter proposes a new understanding of the uses of Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek in Judaea during these years, and argues for particular levels of literacy for each tongue.

▼ Membrane curvature is an essential biophysical
property utilized within cells to execute their most basic
functions. Recent advances in this field have shown proteins
capable of shaping membranes to be the major driving force behind
these remodeling events. These proteins are highly regulated by
cells and are recruited to remodeling events in a location, time,
and function specific manner. The Bin/Amphiphysin/Rvs (
BAR)
superfamily of proteins are banana-shaped homodimers which are
involved in remodeling membranes during endocytosis.
BAR proteins
endophilin A1 and amphiphysin have been shown to recruit important
endocytosis-specific co-factors to the membrane as well as directly
act in membrane remodeling during this process. In vitro, these
proteins are observed to bind large vesicles and convert them into
highly curved structures such as small vesicles or cylindrical
tubes. While previous studies have shown these proteins to be able
to curve membranes, the underlying mechanisms of this process are
not fully understood. Furthermore, how cells regulate the shape or
curvature a protein induces is unclear. ❧ The central thesis of
this work is using biophysical tools to elucidate the structures
and mechanisms protein use to bend membranes as well as to evaluate
how these mechanisms may be regulated in the cell. Our initial
studies evaluated the shape-dependent structures that membrane
curving proteins endophilin A1 and amphiphysin have on lipid
vesicles or tubes using site-directed spin labeling and electron
paramagnetic resonance. These studies revealed that these proteins
use different mechanisms and structures to generate distinct
membrane shapes. We additionally investigated the affect of known
post-translation modifications of these proteins. Phosphorylation
of endophilin A1 was found to regulate the membrane shape this
protein generates. Using a proteomics approach, lysine acetylation,
a modification previously not considered to be important for
protein-membrane interactions, is observed to be localized in
membrane-binding regions of peripheral membrane proteins.
Biophysical characterization of acetylation-mimicking mutations in
proteins amphiphysin, EHD2, and synaptotagmin show that this
modification is capable of regulating the type of curvature these
proteins generate in cells and in vitro by reducing their overall
affinity for the membrane. ❧ While the field is rapidly growing,
new membrane curving proteins and processes are still being
discovered. Myelin, defined as concentric membrane wraps enveloping
neuronal axons, are an essential component of the mammalian nervous
system. How these membranes wrap and remain tightly curved around
an axon is not completely understood. Loosely compacted myelin is a
hallmark of the neurodegenerative disease Multiple Sclerosis.
Myelin is mostly composed of lipids and two proteins, myelin basic
protein and the proteolipid protein. Myelin basic protein is known
as the executive protein in myelination and knockout results in
loosely compacted and defective myelin wraps. Using a…

▼ Timely and spatially controlled endosomal trafficking and signaling is important for cell proliferation, directed cell migration, and cell invasion, which are frequently misregulated in cancer cells. Cdc42-interacting protein-4 (CIP4) family adaptors promote endocytosis by inducing membrane invaginations via their Fer/CIP4 Homology-Bin/Amphyphysin/Rvs (F-BAR) domains, coupled with activation of the actin assembly machinery to promote vesicle fusion or motility. My thesis focuses on defining the roles of CIP4, and a related protein, Transducer of Cdc42-mediated actin assembly-1 (Toca-1), in regulating Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor (EGFR) endocytosis, EGFR trafficking, cancer cell motility, and invasion. In Chapter 2, I show that CIP4 and Toca-1 localize to early endosomes and promote EGFR trafficking from early endosomes to lysosomes for degradation, thus limiting extracellular signal-regulated kinase signaling from early endosomes and proliferation of A431 carcinoma cells. In Chapter 3, I provide novel evidence that depletion of Toca-1 results in defects in actin-based lamellipodial protrusions that are required for cell motility. The cause of these defects may relate to altered recruitment of the Abelson-interactor-1 and its effector Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome protein family verprolin-homologous protein to the lamellipodia in A431 cells depleted of Toca-1. Results in Chapter 4 identify CIP4 as a negative regulator of breast cancer invasiveness downstream of Src protein-tyrosine kinase. Src is a potent inducer of extracellular matrix (ECM)-degrading structures called invadopodia that function in tissue invasion by cancer cells. I found that CIP4 is a Src substrate that localizes to Src-induced invadopodia in MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cells. Interestingly, depletion of CIP4 results in enhanced ECM degradation, invadopodia formation, and invasiveness compared to control cells. Thus, CIP4 and Toca-1 are multifaceted regulators of EGFR downregulation, EGF-induced cell motility, and Src-induced cell invasion.

▼ The False River point bar system is located roughly thirty miles north of Baton Rouge, LA. It is an oxbow lake cut off from the Mississippi River, and represents a large-scale modern analogue to the ancient systems of northeastern Alberta, Canada, specifically those of the Athabasca Oils Sands. While previous work has been done regarding the general architecture of a point bar, there is still omplexity associated with larger scale systems, as studies have been mostly based on small and medium-scale examples. Examination of the point bar was done through a combination of coring and geophysical logging, followed by software analysis of the logs in order to identify facies pack ages and trends within three different areas of the bar (early upstream apex, late stage near apex, and downstream late simple bar stage to late compound bar stage). Three facies packages were interpreted: Top bar, interbedded heterolithic strata, and high-net facies (sand-rich). Although early to late stage simple bar growth demonstrated predictable facies stacking trends, facies related late stage compound bar growth and active abandonment from the main river channel were unpredictable based on small-scale simple models. Permeability differences within sand-rich packages also decreased in the downstream end of the bar, demonstrating a difference in sand quality within seemingly identical facies packages which has previously been overlooked.

▼ The development of ridge-and-swale scroll bar topography of meandering river point bars is not well understood. We hypothesize that scroll bars formed during lateral accretion by the landward migration of transverse bars. To explore this, we relate the scroll bar topography to the internal sedimentary structure. We acquire, invert, and interpolate three pseudo-2D shear wave velocity profiles in two regions of the False River point bar, a Mississippi river oxbow lake in Pointe Coupee Parish Louisiana. Prior studies provide electrical conductivity well logs and cores as well as SH seismic reflection images along the same seismic surveys. LiDAR elevation data provide maps of the ridge-and-swale topography bisected by the seismic surveys. The uppermost 10-15 meters of point bar sediments cannot be well-imaged by reflection seismic processing techniques. From the same seismic data acquired for reflection processing, we extract surface wave signals for dispersion interpretation. The dispersion data are then inverted using a direct-search nearest neighbor algorithm. We then interpolate the inversion results to create pseudo-2D shear wave velocity profiles that image the uppermost 12 meters of sediment. Well log and core data are then correlated with these velocity profiles during interpretation. This study finds that velocity layers dip in two directions away from the crests of scroll bar ridges, parallel to the ridge and swale topography in both overbank sediments and the underlying IHS zone. We interpret this finding as evidence attributing False River scroll bar development to the landward migration of transverse bars, as this parallel sedimentary architecture suggests a stratigraphic link between the IHS and surface topography. A competing model for scroll bar development that attributes individual scrolls to single low-frequency high-discharge flooding events does not suggest this stratigraphic link.

▼ There are so many applications in data fusion, comparison, and recognition that require a robust and efficient algorithm to match features of multiple images. To improve accuracy and get a more stable result is important to take into consideration both local appearance and the pairwise relationship of features. Graphs are a powerful and flexible data structure, allowing for the description of complex relationships between data elements, whose nodes correspond to salient features and edges correspond to relational aspects between features. Therefore, the problem of graph matching is to find a mapping between the two sets of nodes that preserves the relationships between them as much as possible. This graph-matching problem is mathematically formulated as an IQP problem which solving it is NP-hard, and obtaining exact Optima only plausible for very small data. Therefore, handling large-scale scientific visual data is quite limited, necessitating both efficient serial algorithms, as well as scalable parallel formulations.
In this thesis, we first focused on exploring techniques to reduce the computation cost as well as memory usage of Pairwise graph matching by adopting a heuristic pruning strategy together with a redundancy pattern suppression scheme. We also modified the structure of the affinity matrix for minimizing memory requirement and parallelizing our algorithm by employing CPU’s and GPU’s accelerated libraries. Any pair of features with similar distance from first image results in same sub-matrices, therefore instead of constructing the whole affinity matrix, we only built the sub-blocked affinity for those distinct feature distances. By employing this scheme not only saved large memory and reduced computation time tremendously but also, the matrix-vector multiplication of gradient computation performed in parallel, where each block-vector calculation computed independently without synchronization. The accelerated libraries such as MKL, cuSparse, cuBlas and thrust applied to solving the GM problem, following the scheme of the spectral matching algorithm. We also extended our work for Multi-graph imaging, since many tasks require finding correspondences across multiple images. Also, considering more graph improves the matching accuracy. Most algorithms obtain approximate solutions for solving the GM NP-hard problem, result in a weak optimal solution. Therefore, we proposed a new solver, which iteratively modified the affinity matrix and binarized the solution by optimizing the original problem with its integer constraints.

▼ When a truck is driving through a corner, the body of the truck rolls with regards to the
frame. An anti-roll bar, ARB, exist on vehicles to control this rotation by contributing to
the truck roll stiffness. In the current trucks, the roll stiffness from the ARB is constant
and even though it exists variable ARBs on passenger cars there is no known solution
used on trucks.
This thesis project attempts to fill this gap and develop a variable ARB adapted for a
heavy-duty truck. The aim of the project was to develop a concept of an active variable
ARB that can change its contribution to the roll stiffness of the truck.
The main approach with the methodology was a product development process performed
in four iterations. In addition to this method, engineering optimization is applied and material
selected.
The project work has found a way to vary the contributing roll stiffness from the ARB on
a heavy-duty truck. This solution moves the attachment point where the stabilizer stay is
connected to the frame towards the centre of the truck. By doing this, the contributing
roll stiffness from the ARB is lowered without changing the characteristics of the existing
ARB. The best-suited material for the selected concept is ADI for high performance, low
weight and cost.

▼ Ordinary Portland cement (OPC) has been criticised for a long time for its high energy consumption during the production process that releases quantities of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. For decades, researchers have been searching for substitutive binders for manufacturing concrete. Of all the proposed alternative binders, geopolymers stand out because of their total environmental friendliness, good mechanical capabilities and inexpensive processing costs.A geopolymer is an inorganic polymer with an internal chemical composition very similar to that of natural zeolite. A commonly used raw material for producing geopolymers is low-calcium (class F) fly ash, which is a major by-product of power generation industries. Class F fly ash-based geopolymers are usually synthesized by activating the fly ash with alkaline activators. The reaction happening in synthesis is geopolymerisation which transforms fly ash into cement-like binder material. Previous research on class F fly ash-based geopolymer concrete (GPC) has proved its great potential as an alternative to OPC concrete in terms of outstanding chemical and comparable engineering characteristics. However, the structural performance of the reinforced concrete (RC) components relies on there being a sufficient bond between the concrete and the reinforcing bars. Before being utilised in any concrete structures, GPC must demonstrate that it possesses adequate bond strength and predictable bond behaviour with commercial steel reinforcements. Although the importance of investigating the bond characteristics of GPC has been recently acknowledged, nevertheless the bond performance between the reinforcement sand GPC matrices has not been sufficiently studied. The definitions about the bond mechanism and bond-slip rules for GPC were still not clear, which was an inevitable obstacle to its application. As part of the research committed to investigate the suitability of GPC in RC structures, this study aims to not only qualitatively but also quantitatively define the bond behaviour of GPC and, determine whether it could qualify as an alternative to traditional concrete in RC structures. This study used experimental tests, statistical analyses and finite element (FE) modelling to investigate the bond behaviour of GPC. The experimental program included manufacturing and testing plain and ribbed
bar reinforced GPC cylinders in direct pull-out tests and beams in beam pull-out tests. Meanwhile, corresponding tests were conducted on equivalent reinforced OPC concrete cylinders and beams, in order to be used as control groups in comparison of bond quality. The experimental data were planned and obtained so as to be suitable for statistical regression and hypothesis testing. The empirical equations obtained from regression well predicted the bond-slip behaviour of GPC and were used in FE modelling. In the bond tests, the types of reinforcements were 16mm plain and ribbed bars. The samples used for direct pull-out tests were cylinders 100mm in diameter, and for beam pull-out tests…

▼ The main objective of this research was to develop a methodology for the characterization and modelling of elastomers that were
subject to high-strain rate. Four aspects of the problem were accordingly examined. The first aspect of the study was dedicated to the comparison of constitutive equations to numerically model elastomers. The second aspect revolved around the testing of elastomers under dynamic loading. For this purpose, a Kolsky
Bar was designed and constructed to test soft, flexible materials. The third aspect of the work dealt with the numerical modelling of the developed testing apparatus. Finite element methodology was used to optimize the testing parameters and validate the modified Kolsky
Bar apparatus. Finally, the methodology developed to characterize the response of elastomers under high-strain rate loadings was employed to study two unique engineering materials. The developed approach should help engineers and designers in developing new systems in dynamic application with elastomer.

▼ This dissertation describes research into an automated methodology for designing eight-bar linkage systems for specialized tasks. The user specifies the desired motion as five discrete task positions, and a backbone chain robot that can achieve those task positions. The design algorithm then uses the graph theory approach to find all the different ways of constraining the robot using mechanical constraints, which are rigid binary links (RR constraints), to generate single degree of freedom linkages. Linkage solutions synthesized using this method are only guaranteed to reach the five positions. They can exhibit branch defects which results in discontinuities during their motion in between the task positions. An analysis algorithm is used to discard the defective solutions and ensure that the filtered solutions will move the end-effector smoothly through all the five desired task positions. Once the original task positions are explored for finding linkage solutions, the design system runs the algorithm iteratively over randomized task positions, within acceptable variations provided by the user. This results in the generation of large number of defect-free linkage solutions. These solutions are further checked for a minimum and maximum allowed link length criteria to further filter out linkages. The result is a list of successful linkage solutions that are presented to the user. The RR constraining strategy for the user specified robot has provided some useful insights in to linkage design. It has been observed that as we increase the complexity of the starting serial or closed chain robot, the number of linkage solutions that could be synthesized increases rapidly. This increases the probability of finding useful solutions and hence more design options can be presented to the designer for selection. The design system has been implemented in a computer aided linkage software system called MechGen for four-bar and six-bar linkages, and has demonstrated its effectiveness to design better devices for several applications.

Since the opening of the Bar Valentino, in 1979, has built a cozy relationship between its space and the development of artistic events in the city of Londrina, located on the north of the state of Paraná, Brazil. For the artistic references that acquired over time and by its central location, the Bar Valentino has become a main point of meeting of Londrina, joined groups of young people from different areas of the city, setting itself as an area of confluence between its circuits. In 2006, due to the sale of the land where the space remained for 27 years, the Bar Valentino abandoned the city center, moving to a neighborhood relatively noble, so that such circuits were reconfigured. Given this situation, this study aimed to identify and interpret both old and current circuits of visitors on this area, linking them to the current phase of growth and expansion of the city of Londrina, both physical and space scope as the sociability.
