▼ Negotiating identity is a key factor to a people surrounded by many other differences such as other ethnic groups and communities with different orientations. Such is the story of the Tabom who are African slave returnees from Brazil. The music or organised sound related to their existence helps in the creating of their unique identity as it relates to being Ga on one side, and having had contact with the outside world on the other. Agbe, the music of the Tabom is one of the avenues by which the story, culture, and identity of the Tabom can be studied. To date, all anthropological studies done on the Tabom (Boadi-Siaw 1993, Amos and Ayensu 2002 Schamloeffel 2008, Essien 2010, and Von Hesse 2014) only mention in passing the music-Agbe as a mere practice but not as a normative functional element to the creation of the Tabom identity. This dissertation argues from an ethnomusicological perspective that Agbe as an organised sound in relation to the life and culture of the Tabom serves the purpose of creating and negotiating identity as found in their use of music as part of religious rites and as part of other important ceremonies such as in relation to the rites associated with the human life cycle. The dissertation sets forth the historical and social background of the Tabom, reveals the music and analyses every musical element and or device that the creators and the performers of the music utilise in bringing to the fore the priorities of the Tabom culture. A special interest of this dissertation is the study of rhythm, text, melody and the combination of any of these as well as other aids to musical performance in expressing the inner self that subsequently helps in shaping the Tabom identity. An in-depth analysis of the music using both western and African analytical tools such as the identification of scales, modes, and interval cycles/cyclic pitch collections as well as the African minimalist impulse and its relation to the other forms of art within the African culture.

▼ The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of music listening on impulsivity as judged by the Conners' Continuous Performance Test (CPT) II v. 5. College undergraduate students were recruited into one of two groups and were administered a computer task (CPT) to complete in an initial condition, a music condition, and a silence condition. One group of participants had no diagnosed history of ADHD while the other participant group had a history of ADHD. The initial condition served as an opportunity for each participant to take the CPT with the researcher present to allow each participant to ask questions before taking the test alone; each participant was then taken to a separate testing room. As all participants were tested in all three conditions, the remaining two (music and silence) were randomly assigned to control for order effect. The music condition involved taking the CPT alone in the testing room with "In a Mello Tone" by Count Basie playing in the background during the test administration. The piece was manipulated to have a tempo of mm = 124 and looped to last the entirety of the CPT (14 minutes). Each participant was administered the CPT in a silence condition, in which the participant was alone in the testing room without other provided stimuli. The final sample was N = 51 with n = 26 enrolled in the typical group and n = 25 enrolled in the group with attention deficits. A significant main effect difference was found by group: the typical group exhibited lower impulsivity levels as compared to the ADHD group based on Commission mean scores. Additionally, significant main effect differences were found by condition (initial, music, and silence). Both the factors of group and condition appear to be independent as no interaction was found. No marketing de serviços, a forma como o ambiente de serviço afecta o estado de espírito do cliente, provoca um comportamento de afastamento ou aproximação. Pode dizer-se que esta é uma área ainda com muito por explorar, pois os estudos académicos tanto revelam resultados similares entre si, como resultados que por vezes se opõem. A presente investigação visa explorar de que forma o estímulo música, mais concretamente o tempo da música, influencia o tempo de permanência e os gastos efectuados pelos dos clientes num restaurante. Para concretizar esse objectivo, foi realizada uma experiência de campo num restaurante situado nas instalações universitárias do Instituto Superior de Economia e Gestão, onde foram recolhidos dados por observação e questionário em três cenários diferentes: sem música ambiente, com música ambiente de tempo lento e com música ambiente de tempo rápido. Verificou-se que a presença de música ambiente aumenta o tempo de permanência no restaurante, bem como o total de gastos efectuados e, especificamente, os gastos efectuados em comida. A música de tempo lento fez com que o tempo de permanência aumentasse embora não de forma significativa. Pensa-se que a restrição de tempo poderá ter sido a causa para não se ter observado um efeito significativo. A música de tempo rápido fez com que os gastos efectuados aumentassem de forma significativa o que contraria os resultados de alguns estudos. A antecipação de uma experiência positiva e o tipo de serviço do restaurante ser Self-service são potenciais causas explicativas para a obtenção destes resultados.

In services marketing, the way a service environment affects the consumer’s mindset induces an approach or avoidance behavior. This research theme has still much to ascertain since academic studies reveal similar results but sometimes opposite results. This investigation aims to explore how the music stimulus, specifically the music tempo, influences the time and money spent by restaurant costumers. A field experiment in a restaurant, located at university of Instituto Superior de Economia e Gestão, was carried out and data was collected by observation and questionnaire in three different scenarios: without background music, with slow tempo background music and with fast tempo background music. Results show that the presence of background music increases the time spent in the restaurant, the total of expenditures and specifically expenditures in food. Slow tempo music has increased the time spent in the restaurant but not significantly. It is thought that time restriction may be the cause that prevent the observation of this significantly effect. In addition, fast tempo music as increased the money spent in the restaurant in a significantly way, which contradicts some studies results. A positive expectation of an experience and the Self-service of the restaurant are potential causes that explain this obtained results.

▼ This multi-method ethnographic study explores the everyday lives of people with dementia living in the community, cared for by a spouse or family member. It examines three case studies of individuals with early to moderate stage dementia. The latter were attending a weekly day-centre group and this thesis explores their interactions with each other, individual histories, tastes, habits and daily habits. The primary aim of the research was to explore the natural role of music in the lives of these subjects as individuals and as a group. In doing so, this undertaking shows how, in supportive environments, agency and capacity can flourish, leading to constituents of ‘re-covery’, to use mental health terminology. This highlights some of the important matters that are overlooked where perspectives emphasise dementia as a disease of the brain. By contrast, it illuminates the role of social and environmental factors and their contribution to well-being. After initial interviews with each individual and in some cases, members of their families, five months of participant observation followed, primarily located in a home-based day care service. The data set was formed from 178 hours of field observations, a number of audio-recordings made during the sessions, and detailed field notes. This study shows that a close-up focus on the minute details of how a person lives their life and ‘dwelling’ with them for an extended period will illuminate many of the processes that work toward maintaining the well-being of people with dementia and facilitate their revitalisation. Significantly, it was the integration of music within and alongside the everyday tapestries of activities and events which helped create a space for connection and pleasure. The thesis findings reveal how the participants in this research repeatedly demonstrated expertise and insight, albeit not always verbally expressed, but shown in and through forms of practice as regards what was required for their well-being and how to achieve it. This achievement, however, also relied upon thoughtful and creative collaboration with others (carers, family members, etc.), working alongside the participants for mutually beneficial ends. The thesis concludes that what is required for people with dementia and their well-being does not differ substantially from what is generally required by humankind, but there are certain skills and modes of co-operative assistance that are necessary to ensure and maintain the well-being of people with dementia.

Glasba predstavlja pomemben del našega vsakdana. Večino časa jo poslušamo pasivno. Kljub temu se nam vtisne v spomin in v nas vzbudi določena čustva, ki vplivajo na naklonjenost do glasbe in razvoj naših preferenc. Radio in televizija zelo vplivata na to, kakšna glasba nam bo všeč. V magistrskem delu smo predstavili teoretična izhodišča in empirične podatke že izvedenih raziskav. Na njihovi osnovi smo oblikovali empirično raziskavo, s pomočjo katere smo ugotavljali: povezanost čustvenih stanj z izbiro glasbe, povezanost verbalno izraženih glasbenih preferenc z naklonjenostjo do predvajane glasbe ter vpliv zvočnega ozadja med šolskim odmorom na čustvovanje in sprejemanje izbrane glasbe. Namen je bil ugotoviti, ali lahko zvočno ozadje med šolskim odmorom vpliva na intenziteto čustvenega doživljanja in naklonjenost do glasbe. Ugotovili smo, da učenci najraje poslušajo konvencionalno ter energično-ritmično glasbo. Večina učencev med poslušanjem preferenčne glasbe doživlja občutke veselja. Izsledki kažejo, da pogostejša izpostavljenost isti glasbi vpliva na intenziteto čustvovanja, vendar ne pri vseh glasbenih zvrsteh enako. Učenci so bili najbolj naklonjeni glasbi, pri kateri so najintenzivneje doživljali občutke veselja in igrivosti, ter najmanj naklonjeni glasbi, ki jim je vzbujala občutke jeze in strahu. Šolski prostor, vključno z glasbeno podkrepljenimi odmori, predstavlja dobro okolje za čustveno doživljanje kvalitetne glasbe ter razvoj glasbenih preferenc do nje.

Music is an important part of our everyday life. Although we are mostly in a role of a passive listener the music stays in our mind and arouses feelings which influence our affection towards music and the development of our music preferences. Radio and television have a huge influence on what kind of music we like. This master’s thesis presents theoretical framework and empirical data of the research already undertaken which were the basis for an empirical study focusing on correlation between emotional state and choice of music, correlation between verbally expressed music preferences and affection towards the music played

and the influence of audio background played during class break on emotion and reception of selected music. The objective was to determine whether audio background during class break has any influence on emotional experience intensity and affection towards music. We have established that students prefer conventional and energetic-rhythmic music. While listening to preferential music most students experience feelings of joy. The results show that increased exposure to the same kind of music influences the emotion intensity but this influence varies across different music genres. Students are most inclined to music which arouses the strongest feelings of joy and playfulness and least inclined to music which arouses feelings of anger and fear. School environment, including class breaks with audio background, presents a good environment for emotional experience of quality music and development of music preference.

A presente investigação desenvolve e testa empiricamente um modelo suscetível de ser usado para analisar o efeito dos elementos sensoriais do ambiente em instituições de arte. A variável atmosférica estudada foi a música, tendo-se conduzido dois estudos experimentais (em cenário virtual e em cenário real), pelos quais foram recolhidos dados que auxiliaram à compreensão do tipo de atmosfera musical que mais pode beneficiar o consumo em espaços de arte. Numa primeira fase, com base numa amostra de 234 indivíduos, a música foi investigada em termos dos seus atributos rítmicos, tendo-se a ausência/presença e o ritmo mexido/calmo como manipulações experimentais. Os resultados do estudo laboratorial revelaram uma aparente incapacidade da música para potenciar a experiência da arte, tendo sido empiricamente observado o seu efeito negativo sobre as emoções, recordações e intenções dos consumidores. Numa segunda fase, a partir de uma amostra de 218 visitantes de galerias de arte, tendo a ausência/presença de música como única manipulação experimental, foram investigados os efeitos da atmosfera musical na relação que se estabelece entre a experiência de visita e as emoções, as recordações e as intenções de consumo dos visitantes. O estudo II permitiu determinar que, no contexto artístico, experiências sensoriais e cognitivas estão associadas a emoções e recordações mais fortes e positivas, as quais, por sua vez, podem gerar maiores intenções de revisita e recomendação, saindo esta rede de relações reforçada na presença de música (evidências que não suportam as do estudo I). Em conjunto, as conclusões da análise empírica resultaram em descobertas relevantes para explicar o mecanismo subjacente à influência das variáveis musicais num cenário de arte, tendo sido, em torno delas, discutidas algumas implicações práticas para o marketing e para a gestão nas artes.

This research aims to develop and empirically test a model explaining the role of environmental cues in art settings. Two studies were conducted to explore specifically the effects of background music and to help identify the auditory environmental conditions that most benefit consumers’ responses to art. Study I was conducted in simulated art scenarios to investigate the effects of three treatment variations of music (not only its presence/absence was tested, but also its fast/slow perceived rhythm), resulting on a sample of 234 potential consumers. Findings suggest that music is not capable of enhancing the art experience. In fact, study I found empirical evidences of its negative influence on consumers’ emotional, cognitive and behavioral responses. This study examines how tempo of background music affects reading comprehension when consuming written news on a smartphone. It has taken inspiration from a study conducted in 2002 which investigated how tempo in music affects reading comprehension when reading news on a pocket computer in a distracting environment. There is a rapidly growing use of smartphones and with this an increasing use of both news applications and music streaming services. Therefore, especially in a time where the reliability of certain news is being discussed, it is interesting to examine if there is any correlation between the music we listen to and how we comprehend news. Two instrumental music samples, which could be described as of the electronic pop genre, were created with the tempo being the only difference between them. Participants got to read two articles from the business section on a smartphone with either no background music or one of the two samples playing in headphones. After each article, a questionnaire with five true or false questions regarding the contents of the articles was answered. A final questionnaire regarding the participants experience of reading news on smartphones and listening to music and prior knowledge of the contents of the articles was then presented to the subject. The results indicate that a slower tempo improves reading comprehension and efficiency. However, no significant differences between the experimental conditions were found.

Den här studien undersöker hur tempot i bakgrundsmusik påverkar läsförståelse vid konsumtion av skrivna nyheter på en smarttelefon. En studie av hur tempo i musik påverkar läsförståelse vid läsning av nyheter på en handdator i en distraherande miljö och som genomfördes år 2002 är den huvudsakliga inspirationen. Användandet av smarttelefoner blir bara större och detta innebär en ökning av både applikationer för nyhetskonsumtion och streamingtjänster. Därför är det intressant att undersöka om det finns en korrelation mellan musiken vi lyssnar på och hur vi förstår och uppfattar nyheter, speciellt i denna tid då trovärdighet av nyheter ofta diskuteras. Två instrumentala musikstycken, vilka tillhör genren elektronisk pop, skapades med tempot som den enda åtskilda variabeln. Deltagare i studien fick läsa två artiklar från ekonomidelen på en smarttelefon med antingen ingen musik eller ett av de två musikstyckena spelandes i hörlurar. Efter varje artikel fick deltagaren svara på ett frågeformulär med fem frågor av typen "sant eller falskt" som handlade om innehållet i artikeln. Ett formulär angående deltagarens erfarenhet av att läsa nyheter på en smarttelefon samtidigt som musik spelas i bakgrunden samt tidigare kunskap om innehållet i artiklarna besvarades slutligen. Resultaten indikerar att ett långsammare tempo förbättrar både förståelse och effektivitet vid läsning. Inga signifikanta skillnader mellan grupperna kunde dock fastställas.

Agtergrondmusiek vorm deel van elke kind se leefwêreld aangesien moderne tegnologie dit maklik maak om musiek oral en altyd te luister. The abolition of corporal punishment in South African schools led to greater discipline problems among students. Teachers are becoming increasingly frustrated as few practical solutions to this problem exist. This study examines the role that background music in the classroom can play in the child's ability to concentrate, increasing his positive behavior and so the improvement of discipline in the classroom. Background music is part of every child's world as modern technology makes listening to music part of everyday living. Learners listen to a large portion of music every day, even while they are doing homework. Therefore it was necessary to study the influence of background music as to what extend it can benefit the student in the classroom. This study used practical action research within a qualitative research design. From the relationship between the learner's behaviour and observations after classical instrumental music was played in the classroom, this type of background music can be used as a potential technique to improve discipline in the classroom. ▼ Research concerning undergraduate choral teacher education is relatively limited despite the fact that annually about 10,000 students are enrolled in choral music education degree programs and just under 2,000 graduate with credentials leading to a choral music teaching license. Few researchers have specifically focused on the question of choral music educator expertise or the types of knowledge and skill that should be cultivated during preservice training so as to ensure future professional success. The primary purpose of this study was to determine how choral methods courses are structured and situated within the undergraduate choral music education curriculum, and the extent to which choral methods instructors emphasize major facets of choral music teacher knowledge and skill as defined by Shulman’s teacher knowledge framework: Content Knowledge (CK), Pedagogical Knowledge (PK), and the merger of the two – Pedagogical Content Knowledge (PCK). Relationships among instructional emphasis ratings (reflecting amount of instructional time and assessment weight), methods course characteristics, choral methods instructor attributes, and instructor beliefs pertaining to the major categories of choral teacher knowledge and skill also were explored. An on-line survey methodology was employed and the Choral Methods Instructor Inventory (CMII) was developed. The questionnaire items were created based upon previous work that explored choral and instrumental methods courses, investigations focused on utilizing Shulman’s framework in music teacher research, in consultation with experts, and through pilot testing. Content validity for items used to measure teacher knowledge orientation was established by expert music teacher educators, who independently classified specific knowledge and skill items with 91% agreement. Internal consistency estimates provide evidence of adequate-to-strong levels of reliability. To access the target population (choral methods course instructors) a multi-step sampling process was utilized as follows: (a) NASM-accredited schools offering an undergraduate degree leading to a music teaching license were identified; (b) music administrators at those schools were contacted to obtain the choral methods instructor’s email address; (c) when follow-up inquiries to these administrators did not yield the information, the school’s faculty biography section was searched in an effort to identify the person most likely to teach choral methods; and (d) these individuals were sent an invitation to participate in the study. Music instructors representing 490 NASM-accredited schools were invited to participate. Of those, 242 (49%) responded to Section I items that address institutional demographics, but 60 (25%) indicated that a stand-alone secondary choral methods course is not offered at their institution. This work focus on the importance of music in childrens education. It was developed based on a case study approaching the practice of musical pedagogy of a teacher who teaches 4-to-5-year-old kids at a private owned kindergarten school located in São Paulo city. The interest to have chosen such a school was, in particular, meant to show how that teacher approaches music, aiming at making childrens development easier and possible. Thus, the support was mainly based on authors such as Brito, Koellreutter, Schafer e Winisk, among others, in addition to the National Children Education Curricular Reference itself. Aiming at bringing subsidies to this study, the above mentioned authors have their theoretical framework based on the importance of playful experience, as of infantile cultures, silence, sonorous landscapes which outstand the sounds around us, the stimulus to attentively listen, the integration between sound and movement, the awakening to creativeness, the appreciation of a serious and planned improvisation in addition to acknowledge the sounds made by the kids themselves. Nevertheless, it was considered that for a successful pedagogical practice to exist, such as the one shown in this work, it is fundamental that, besides the theoretical reference, the child education teacher should have, at least a rather basic musical background. This being the case, the teacher will be able to make use of a more adequate musical education for today, in addition to contribute to childrens own development.

Esta dissertação trata da importância da música para a educação infantil. Sua realização ocorreu mediante um estudo de caso que abordou a prática da pedagogia musical de uma professora que atua com crianças de 4 a 5 anos em uma escola infantil da rede particular de ensino situada no Município de São Paulo. O interesse em escolher esta escola, em especial, foi no sentido de demonstrar como essa professora aborda a música, tendo como objetivo facilitar ou possibilitar o desenvolvimento da criança. Para tanto, o apoio residiu principalmente em autores como: Brito, Koellreutter, Schafer e Winisk, entre outros, além do próprio Referencial Curricular Nacional de Educação Infantil. Com o intuito de trazer subsídios a este estudo, os autores citados possuem como arcabouço teórico a importância da experiência lúdica, das culturas infantis, do silêncio, da paisagem sonora evidenciando os sons que nos rodeiam, do estímulo a uma escuta atenta, da integração entre o som e o movimento, do despertar para a criatividade, de valorizar uma improvisação séria e planejada, além de reconhecer os sons produzidos pelas próprias crianças. Porém, considerou-se que para existir uma prática pedagógica de sucesso, como a demonstrada nesta dissertação, é importante que, além de percorrer este referencial teórico, é fundamental que a professora de educação infantil tenha, pelo menos, uma formação musical básica, além de sua formação em pedagogia. Opazovali smo čustveno-vedenjski odziv na različne glasbene zvrsti ter učinek glasbe na motivacijo, pozornost ter psiho-fizično delovanje otrok in mladostnikov s posebnimi potrebami. Dodatno smo s pomočjo polstrukturiranega intervjuja preverili uporabo glasbe in prostočasnih aktivnosti v domačem okolju. V raziskavo so bili vključeni štirje otroci s posebnimi potrebami z zmerno, lažjo in težjo motnjo v duševnem razvoju, ki so vključeni v posebni program vzgoje in izobraževanju ter bivajo v domu za učence s posebnimi potrebami. Vsak udeleženec je sodeloval pri štirih srečanjih, kjer so bili izpostavljeni štirim različnim zvrstem glasbe v senzorni sobi, z namenom širšega izbora prostočasnih dejavnosti. Rezultati so pokazali, da ima glasbeno ozadje pozitivne učinke na čustvovanje, vedenje, motivacijo in vztrajnost ter da ima pri izbiri prostočasnih dejavnosti pomembno vlogo. Predstavljene so tudi omejitve raziskave ter predlogi za nadaljnje raziskovanje.

Music and sound play an important role in early childhood and overall child development. Children and adolescents with special needs are particularly responsive to music. The research aimed to determine the effect of background music on the selection of leisure activities in special needs children and adolescents. We observed the emotional/behavioural response to different musical genres and the effect of music on motivation, attention and the psychophysical behaviour of special needs children and adolescents. We also utilized a semi-structured interview to examine the use of music and leisure activities in their home environment. The research included four special needs children with mild, moderate and severe developmental impairment who are placed in a special education programme and live in a home for special needs pupils. Each participant participated in four sessions that took place in a sensory room, where the pupils were exposed to four different genres of music and offered a wide selection of leisure activities. The results showed that background music has positive effects on emotion, motivation and persistence, and plays an important role in the selection of leisure activities. The paper also presents the limitations of the research and offers suggestions for further examination.

▼ The purpose of the study was to investigate independent piano teachers' view of themselves in the light of selected attributes found in sociological writings on the professions. The research problems were: (a) to determine the attitudes which independent piano teachers held toward selected professional attributes; (b) to determine the relationship between the attitudes toward the professional attributes and selected background variables; and (c) to determine the degree of association between these attributes. The problems were addressed by a questionnaire directed to independent piano teachers active in the area of Dallas-Ft. Worth, Texas. Thirty teachers were also interviewed to determine consistency of response and to explore issues which the questionnaire had raised. Reliability and validity were established at acceptable levels. Techniques of statistical analysis included Pearson's product-moment correlation, multiple regression, chi-square in conjunction with Cramer's V_, and factor analysis. The strongest attitudes expressed by the teachers in the study concerned professional self-image, altruism, client orientation, commitment to work, and independence. The most important background variables were age, years of experience, number of students, certification by a professional association, and college degree in music. A multiple regression analysis tested each variable against the dependent variable professional self-image; recognition by others, commitment to work, client orientation, and qualification were found to account for 25% of the common variance. A factor analysis was also conducted to seek out patterns of attitudes among the attributes being studied; seven factors were identified among the subjects' belief systems as Professional Actions, Satisfaction, Quality Control, Professionalism, Compliance, Autonomy, and Focus on Student. These factors accounted for almost half of the total variance in the data. The study concluded that: (a) independent piano teaching was a female-dominated, subsidized occupation, and (b) the piano teachers' professional self-image seemed to be an evaluation of themselves and their work, rather than the use of profession as a definable goal for which to strive.
