▼ The question of how well in terms of safety can a driver take over control of an automated vehicle in response to an emergency situation is of crucial importance. Most of the studies performed so far focus on the drivers’ reaction times and the mechanisms behind the transition. In this study, an effort is made to incorporate the braking times that are required in order to finalize a safety maneuver, with the aim to assess the safety implications of the entire transition in control. For this purpose, a new methodology was developed and a simulation model was used in order to simulate platoons of CACC equipped vehicles. Two new KPIs were defined: the Time to Control and the Safe Time Budget. The results suggest that higher number of critical events and crashes are associated with higher market penetration rates. This reveals that despite the fact that AV can in general increase traffic efficiency and safety, when it comes to emergency situations where safety is inextricably linked to the combination of AV and driver performance, overall safety may be compromised under certain conditions. In addition, the results revealed a strong connection of the above-mentioned action times with the initial speed of the vehicles involved in a conflict. The findings of this research, point to new directions particularly in concern to the extension of the operational design domain of automated vehicles in order to minimize system deactivations, and also with regard to the need for better prediction models and safety assessment tools.

▼ Although water is considered a renewable resource, there is only a fixed amount of water available. No additional water can be made, and we cannot easily control how fast water is recycled or in what form it will appear and where. With expected growth in the world’s population and economy, the same amount of water must supply more needs. Taking into account climate change projections and water-related environmental stresses, even less water might be available for human uses. People will need to decide how to serve a multitude of water needs. This dissertation uses the Southern Nevada Water Authority’s (SNWA) Groundwater Development Project to investigate how water policy designs handle the challenges of meeting urban and rural as well as human and ecological water needs when allocating scarce water supplies.
The Southern Nevada Water
Authority (SNWA) plans to build a pipeline to transfer groundwater from five rural basins in northeastern Nevada 300 miles south to the Las Vegas metropolitan area in Southern Nevada. SNWA has asked the Nevada State Engineer to approve its water right applications to develop and use groundwater from these rural basins. One of the basins, Snake Valley, straddles the border between Nevada and Utah. An interstate agreement allocating the groundwater between the two states is required before the State Engineer can approve water rights that would be diverted from Snake Valley.
We found that policy debates and people’s rationales for how water should be allocated revolved around disagreements over beneficial use. In addition, water agreements need to be designed so that the risks from hydrologic uncertainties and impacts from other users are also apportioned clearly and equitably. Policy designs are purposefully crafted and have enormous impact, yet analysis of the actual contents of policies and their societal impacts has not received adequate attention within the policy sciences. The significance of this research is that it focuses on the foundational principles and rules for the allocation of scarce water resources that must necessarily balance urban and rural interests as well as human and environmental needs.

▼ In 1980, the A.C.T. Schools' Authority through the curriculum
development section together with its curriculum consultants, helped
to initiate and develop a pilot programme In relation to Year 6 students
about to proceed to Year 7. This programme was made possible by the
co-operative participation of both primary and secondary schools, their
principals and staffs. The programme aimed at building bridges between
primary and secondary schools, between primary and secondary teachers
and between the curriculum of primary and secondary schools.
This study began, as has been said,.where a Pilot Programme
introduced by the A.C.T. Schools' Authority, by its Curriculum Development
Section, left off. It aimed to explore further the nature of the 'day to
day' reality experienced by some Year 6 students in the Australian Capital
Territory. In addition, it aimed to explore and gain insights into the
process of transition by following up those students who had been part of
the sample in Year 6. It includes individual perceptions of the process.
In designing research instruments and investigating the process of
transition, certain theoretical concepts drawn from both psychology and
sociology were used to crystallise the observations made. In addition,
earlier studies concerning transition were assessed as well as those in
related areas.
In the process of this field study, many observations were made,
some contradictory, and generally the field study seems to have raised as
many questions as it has answered. As might have been expected, any study
dealing with human reaction is complex-more so when there are different
types of institutions to be considered. Nonetheless it is only apparently
inconclusive enquiries like this which will add to the store of knowledge
and allow assumptions to be replaced by more precise data.

This study takes off in a dilemma where the circle time as well as transitional situations appear to be problematic. A teacher in preschool class wants to educate the children and might not always be mindful of what is best for them. In this scenario, the children need to break up their play and then go to a circle time that is not didactically through. Then there are transition situations that overlap, and these give rise to conflicts as they are stressful for both the children and the educators as they must wait, and wait until they are ready to go. The purpose of the study is to discuss what fostering and didactic function circle time and different transition situations fulfil in the after-school activity. I also look at it from a child perspective. The discussion sets out norms and hidden curriculum that affect our teaching. Essay as a method means to reflect on a dilemma where my reflection gives me the opportunity to clarify and deepen my questions and seek answers to these in connection with literature in teaching. The conclusion of this study is that we in the after-school activity are often governed by old patterns by the standards we maintain in the activity. It turns out that fostering is a larger part of the after-school activity than previously thought.
