1. -4938-1727. The role of authority on emotional disclosure within sibling relationships.

Degree: MA, Communication Studies, 2019, University of Texas – Austin

Limited research has focused on the unique characteristics of sibling relationships which differentiate them from close relationships. The current study seeks to build upon foundational research on authority (authoritativeness and authoritarianism), self-disclosure, relationship satisfaction, and characteristics of sibling relationships (birth order, age gap, and sex composition) within the context of sibling dyads. Data were collected via an online survey from 193 participants; however, as the focus of this study centers on siblings in emerging adulthood, participants over the age of 25 were dropped from the analysis. The data from the remaining 187 respondents included their perception of a selected siblings’ authority style, their own authority style, self-disclosure, and relationship satisfaction with their sibling. Analyses revealed that both participant and sibling authoritarianism were positively correlated with relationship satisfaction. Additionally, older siblings reported engaging in more disclosure than younger siblings. Finally, controlling for participant and sibling sex, self-disclosure was positively associated with relationship satisfaction. Further results and implications are discussed Advisors/Committee Members: Dailey, René M. (advisor).

2. Cheng, Wendy J. Y. Overt and covert narcissism in Asian Americans, European Americans, and Asians.

Degree: PhD, Psychology, 2004, University of Michigan

Many contemporary theorists view people of Asian descent as less narcissistic than those of European descent. Empirical studies on narcissistic personality characteristics, in fact, attributed Asians' and Asian Americans' lower narcissism scores to their cultural upbringing. Two studies examined differential overt and covert narcissism expression in second generation Asian American, European American, and Asian undergraduate students. Study 1 showed that 100 second generation Asian Americans and 40 Asians, compared to 100 European Americans were more likely to express covert narcissism. There were no ethnocultural differences in overall overt narcissism expression but European Americans reported higher scores on the authoritativeness, superiority, and self-sufficiency overt narcissism subscales than Asian Americans. Modesty was negatively associated with overt narcissism but not associated with covert narcissism in European Americans and Asian Americans. European American and Asian American ethnic identities were positively correlated with overt narcissism while only Asian American ethnic identity was negatively correlated with covert narcissism. Neither modesty nor Asian ethnic identity was significantly associated with overt and covert narcissism in Asians. Study 2 replicated the findings by showing that 100 second generation Asian Americans, compared to 100 European Americans, reported more covert narcissism and equivalent overt narcissism. Asian Americans also reported more interdependent self construal and equivalent independent self construal as European Americans. Shame was positively correlated with covert narcissism for European Americans and Asian Americans but negatively correlated with overt narcissism for only Asian Americans. Both European Americans and Asian Americans with high scores on the covert narcissism scales reported lower subjective well-being. Results are discussed in terms of research, clinical and educational implications. Advisors/Committee Members: Nagata, Donna K. (advisor).

3. Carla Osmo. O realismo jurídico norte-americano: uma reflexão sobre a vinculação do juiz constitucional ao direito positivo.

Degree: 2008, Pontifícia Universidade Católica de São Paulo

This essay intends to analyze what American Legal Realism states about the importance of positive law in the process of judicial decision. The starting point is the perception that Brazil faces a moment of perplexity as to the power conferred to Supremo Tribunal Federal and the way it is exercised. The activity of the Brazilian Constitutional Courts members seems to be distant from the traditionally acknowledged judicial function, that is, the technical and unbiased disclosure of answers provided by previously existing legal formulations and their application to individual cases, independent of creative acts. This leads to the questioning of the actual role of the constitutional clauses in the settling of controversies taken to court. In this context, the author undertakes a study about the realist movement which took place in the United States and became known for questioning the practical relevance of established rules as compared to other factors active in this process, by means of observing the way in which concrete problems are actually solved by state agencies. The author adopts as her main focus works by realist authors, especially those considered as the most representative of the movement, Karl Llewellyn and Jerome Frank, and investigates which is the object of their criticism and which are their main theses. The essay identifies elements which may hopefully contribute to studies aimed at a better understanding and acceptance of the constitutional judges action in Brazil, based on the theories presented by this intellectual movement, which had a great and enduring impact in its country of origin
