Als Klassischer Philologe bekleidet Friedrich Nietzsche in der Philologie des 19. Jahrhunderts eine Außenseiterposition, die hauptsächlich auf seiner in Zunftkreisen als disziplinfern verurteilten Tragödienschrift gründet. Erst in der zweiten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts beschäftigt sich die Klassische Philologie intensiv mit seinen Schriften und bemüht sich um eine positive Neubewertung des Philologen Nietzsche, wobei er immer noch oftmals als der Disziplin Außenstehender behandelt wird. Diese Arbeit unternimmt den Versuch, Nietzsche in die Disziplin-geschichte zu reintegrieren und wissenschaftshistorisch zu verorten. Anhand biographischer Daten und wissenschafts- historischer Eckpunkte wird dargestellt, dass es sich bei Nietzsche um einen geradezu typischen Klassischen Philologen handelt, dessen Habitus sich als deckungsgleich mit dem Selbstbild der Philologie im 19. Jahrhundert beschreiben lässt. Seine philologischen Schriften, die sich kritisch mit der Philologie auseinandersetzen, dienen als konstruktive Reformvorschläge, aus denen ein Philologiekonzept Nietzsches rekonstruiert wird. Dieses lässt sich in das neuhumanistische Philologiebild des frühen 19. Jahrhunderts einreihen, als diese aufgrund der Synthese von Wissenschaft und Bildung (Wilhelm von Humboldt) zum Leitfach avancierte. Nietzsches Philologiekonzept verweist zudem auf tradierte Disziplinentwürfe: Wie Friedrich August Wolf definiert er die Philologie über die besondere Dignität ihres Gegenstandes, die jedoch nicht nur behauptet, sondern auch wissenschaftlich und methodisch begründet werden muss. Es braucht demnach eine Methodik (philologisches Lesen, August Boeckh), die der Klassizität des Gegenstandes gerecht wird. Die Normativität des Klassischen widerstrebt jedoch jeglicher Objektivität, weshalb Nietzsche auf den exklusiven Philologen setzt, wie er ihn, angelehnt an das philologische Ethos von Karl Lachmann, skizziert.

As a classical philologist Friedrich Nietzsche holds the position of an outsider in the philology of the 19th century, which correlates with his paper „Die Geburt der Tragödie aus dem Geiste der Musik“. It was critized as nonscientific in perspective of the philological discipline. After the mid-20th century classical philologists start focussing on Nietzsche’s writings and try to reevaluate him as a philologist in a positive way. However, he is still often treated as an outsider from the philological discipline. This thesis tries to reintegrate Nietzsche into the history of the philological discipline. Based on biographical data and facts of the history of science it will be demonstrated, in what way Nietzsche can be seen as an almost typical classical philologist, whose habitus can be described as congruent with the self-image of the philology in the 19th century. His philological writings, which deal with philology in a hypercritical way, serve as constructive reform proposals, that can be used to reconstruct Nietzsche’s own conception of philology. 2. Urban, William John. Sexuated Topology and the Suspension of Meaning: A Non-Hermeneutical Phenomenological Approach to Textual Analysis.

This study assumes the subject's pursuit of meaning is generally incapacitating and should be suspended. It aims to demonstrate how such a suspension is theoretically accomplished by utilizing Lacan's formulae of sexuation integrated with his work in discourse theory and topology. Part I places this study into context by examining scholarship from the established fields of hermeneutics, phenomenology, (post)structuralism, aesthetic theory and psychoanalysis in order to extract out their respective theory of meaning. These theories reveal that an historical struggle with meaning has been underway since the Reformation and reaches near crisis proportions in the 20th century. On the one hand this crisis is mollified by the rise of Heideggerian-Gadamerian hermeneutical phenomenology which questions traditional epistemological approaches to the text using a new ontological conceptualization of meaning and a conscious rejection of methodology. On the other hand this crisis is exacerbated when the ubiquitous nature of meaning is itself challenged by (post)structuralism's discovery of the signifier which inscribes a limit to meaning, and by the domains of sense and nonsense newly opened up by aesthetic theory. These historical developments culminate in the field of psychoanalysis which most consequentially delimits a cause of meaning said to be closely linked to the core of subjectivity. Part II extends these findings by rigorously constructing out of the Lacanian sexuated formulae a decidedly non-hermeneutical phenomenological approach useful in demonstrating the sexual nature of meaning. Explicated in their static state by way of an account of their original derivation from the Aristotelian logical square, it is argued that these four formulae are relevant to basic concerns of textual theory inclusive of the hermeneutical circle of meaning. These formulae are then set into motion by integrating them with Lacan's four discourses to demonstrate the breakdown of meaning. Finally, the cuts and sutures of two-dimensional space that is topology as set down in L'étourdit are performed to confirm how the very field of meaning is ultimately suspended from a nonsensical singular point known in Lacanian psychoanalysis as objet a. The contention is that by occupying this point the subject frees himself from the debilitating grip of meaning. Advisors/Committee Members: Bailey, Steven (advisor).
