▼ For decades, the educational system has been concerned with school readiness and the approaches educational institutions follow to ensure that students enter school with the necessary skills to be successful. However, determining what school readiness entails has been a controversial topic since the establishment of educational goals by the national government (Fantuzzo & McWayne, 2002; Mashburn & Pianta, 2006; Pyle, Bates, Greif, & Furlong, 2005). School readiness is a milestone that concerns both parents and educators, and it affects academic planning in schools. Parents and teachers are concerned with students’ abilities to master key areas such vocabulary, print motivation, print awareness, letter knowledge (LK), phonological awareness (PA), and rapid automatized naming (RAN). The three latter skills will translate into fluency, accuracy, and effective comprehension which are key factors in school readiness (Norton, 2012). As early as five years of age, children at risk for dyslexia begin to exhibit deficiencies in LK, PA and RAN. These students exhibit early signs of dyslexia and correspondingly exhibit poor academic performance regardless of possessing high cognitive ability (Pyle et al., 2005).
The primary purpose of this quantitative research was to study teachers’ perceptions of the role of
technology in teaching students who have been diagnosed as having dyslexia. This research also investigated the types of
technology teachers currently use in the classroom and the teachers’ perceptions on the use of
technology by students diagnosed as having dyslexia. This study explored what type, if any, of
technology is currently being used in the classroom and the teachers’ views on this instructional approach. An online survey was used to gather the pertinent data and to document teachers’ perceptions on the role of
technology in teaching students with dyslexia once the corresponding professionals have confirmed the diagnosis.
The findings of this study generated new awareness about teachers’ perspective on the use of
technology to teach these students. This study also generated understanding about the type of
Assistive Technology (AT) available to promote academic advancement for students with dyslexia in the classroom. Additionally, this research provided information regarding the benefits students with dyslexia obtain from the use of AT as a teaching and learning tool. This information may promote the incorporation of
technology in the curriculum and lesson planning for these students.

▼ This study explores the many socio-cultural, technical, economic, and environmental factors that influence the adoption and usage of computer-based assistive technologies by persons with disabilities. As using an assistive technology may make one’s disability obvious to others, choices made about technology usage are multifaceted social negotiations involving issues of identity, normalcy, and nature of disability.
The key approach used in this research is the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). This model is extended to include Technological and Environmental contexts to include other factors that influence adoption of assistive technology. The study found out that perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness, environmental and organizational contexts influenced attitudes towards adoption of assistive technologies. It also established that attitudes were not linked with the intention to use since persons with disabilities would use the technologies if they were available and at affordable prices. The study recommended that similar studies be conducted without perceptions and involve the actual computer-based assistive technology use since these were not assessed.

▼ Communication disorders affect one in ten Canadians and the incidence is particularly high among those with Cerebral Palsy. A vocalization-activated switch is often explored as an alternative means to communication. However, most commercial speech recognition tools to date have limited capability to accommodate dysarthric speech and thus are often prematurely abandoned. We developed and evaluated a novel vocalization-based access technology as a writing tool for a pediatric participant with cerebral palsy. It consists of a high quality condenser headmic, a custom classifier based on Gaussian Mixture Modeling (GMM) and Mel-frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCC) as features. The system was designed to discriminate among five vowel sounds while interfaced to an on-screen keyboard. We used response efficiency theory to assess this technology in terms of goal attainment and satisfaction. The participant’s primary goal to reduce switch activation time was achieved with increased satisfaction and lower physical effort when compared to her previous pathway.

▼ Stroke is a debilitating neurological condition caused by a dysfunction in the flow of blood to the brain (Stroke.org, 2016). The onset of stroke can result in complex disability that may require long term rehabilitation (Duncan, 1994). The deterioration of psychosocial well-being is one of the many issues that may result from the formation of disability in an individual (Aström, 1992). Dunn (2000) defines psychosocial as “how people think and feel about, influence, and relate to actual, imagined, or assumed others”. It is about how our concept of self in influences our relationships with others and vice versa.
The purpose of this research is to investigate what in influence digitally connected communities can have on psychosocial recovery from stroke. This will be achieved through the creation of a web application. This web application will expand on the idea of DIY and non-intentional design (Brandes, 2008) and apply it in a rehabilitative manner. Non-intentional design is defined by Brandes (2008, p) as, “the everyday, unprofessional redesign of professionally designed objects. NID results when an object is used in a manner different from the prescribed (and therefore restricted) functional intention or when the prescribed application is not honoured in the new uses”. The intention being that influencing
assistive technology use in a positive way can help a person accept disability into their concept of self and help that person to regain confidence to engage with others socially.
This research initially canvasses literature reviews (Hanington et al, 2012) to analyze the psychosocial, elderly engagement with web applications, and to develop heuristics to guide the design of the web application. Subsequently, I have used precedent reviews (Hanington et al, 2012) to analyze DIY
assistive technology documentation in an online environment. Finally, I utilised a Research through design (Frayling, 1993) approach to inform the creation of this DIY
assistive technology and the web application. User testing of the web application was then performed. The testing took the participants through the process of using the web application via a set list of tasks and also asked them to recreate one of the three available DIY
assistive technology examples.

▼ This research aimed to understand the impact of transfer lift
technology on the
experience of parents caring for their adult children with a disability. Seven parent
caregivers between the ages of 53-69 participated in individual interviews. For aging
parent caregivers, the physical effort of daily lifting responsibilities places them at risk for
back pain, fatigue and other health problems. To ease the physical load, transfer lifts are
frequently recommended. Transfer lift devices function to lift individuals up mechanically
from one surface, transport them to another location and safely lower them onto the new
surface.
A mixed methods approach was utilized for this research, including a quantitative
survey, the Caregiver
Assistive Technology Outcome Measure, and open-ended interview
questions. Both approaches were employed to gain insight into changes in the parent
participant’s experience as caregiver since acquiring a transfer lift. Comparison of data
revealed shared findings that showed transfer lift
technology positively impacts the
experience of middle and old age parent caregivers.
Findings confirmed that transfer lifts are consistently utilized in the home by the
parent participants and/or by other caregivers to transfer the adult child with a disability.
The study also provided insight into emotional and physical stress that parent participants
reported in relation to transferring adult children with disability. Since acquiring a transfer
lift in the home, parent participants reported significantly reduced levels of worry over
safety for their child and themselves and decreased physical strain. The major advantages
of having a transfer lift in the home were identified as the decreased level of emotionalstress and physical lifting load. Due to this reduced physical load and increased level of
safety, parent participants benefit from having a wider group of caregivers available to care
for the adult child. Findings also revealed challenges of using transfer lift
technology.
These include difficulty managing the sling before and after transfers and an increased
amount of time required when using the lift. The results of this study lead to meaningful
considerations for clinicians to share with individuals with disabilities and their caregivers
who are considering transfer lift
technology.

▼ A Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) is an interface that allows to transform the user's intent into actions without entailing muscle movements. BCIs could be used as
assistive technology by individuals whose neuromuscular channels are impaired. BCIs commonly make use of bulky, expensive, and clinical-grade EEG equipment, making an in-home use uncomfortable for the user.
In this work, we present the development of a wearable and cost-effective BCI
assistive device. Electroencephalography signal is acquired using the OpenBCI Cyton board, which is a low-cost hardware for biological signal acquisition. A 3D printed headset is used to house the electrodes.
The proposed
assistive device functions based on the P300 response of the human brain, and flashing symbols on a grid are employed as stimuli to elicit a P300 response. Online detection of the P300 response is achieved using logistic regression, and a genetic algorithm is used to perform automatic feature extraction.
The device allows the disabled individual to type words on a computer screen and to control a 4 DoF robotic arm. Two modes of operation can be used to control the robotic arm. One mode consists of controlling the robotic arm with discrete movements. The second control mode consists of sending high level commands to the robotic arm, that would in turn move autonomously. Therefore, the presented
assistive device augments communication capabilities and allows for the control of external devices.
This device serves as a proof of concept that cost-effective EEG acquisition systems along with robust classification techniques can be used in the field of
assistive technologies. Future improvements are necessary to aid the definitive transition from laboratory setting to in-home use, allowing many disabled individuals to improve their quality of life.

▼ Mobile robots that can physically manipulate their environments have the potential to help persons with motor impairments perform a variety of tasks, including self-care tasks. Such
assistive mobile manipulators (AMMs) could increase independence and reduce the burden placed on caregivers. However, general-purpose AMMs are complex systems with many sensors and actuators, and so are often difficult for non-experts to operate. Through user-centered research, we have developed software enabling the use of a general-purpose robot as an accessible AMM to address these challenges. This process has included a long-term collaboration with an individual with severe quadriplegia, Henry Evans, and his wife and primary caregiver, Jane Evans. We evaluated our system with 15 inexperienced users with severe motor impairments from around the country. These participants, having a variety of sources of impairment and using a variety of accessible computer interfaces, operated the robot remotely to perform both a standardized clinical manipulation assessment and a simulated self-care task. When operating the robot, they achieved a significant improvement over the use of their own limbs, and their improvement on the clinical assessment exceeded a conservative estimate of the minimal clinically important difference. Furthermore, their feedback provided support for the likelihood of
technology adoption, despite slow task completion. We also evaluated our system during a seven-day deployment in Henry Evans' home. During this study, Henry operated the robot for over 22.5 hours in 16 separate sessions, successfully performing more than 18 distinct tasks, some numerous times. Our study demonstrates the broad capability of general-purpose AMMs and provides a baseline for teleoperation performance.

▼ Assistive technology (AT) helps make the curriculum accessible to students with visual impairments. Studies have shown that half of these students are using
assistive technologies. The purpose of this study was to seek a better understanding of the various factors related to
assistive technology use by students with visual impairments in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Through the use of the online survey provider, Survey Monkey™, an invitation to participate in the
Assistive Technology Use by Students with Visual Impairments (ATSVI) survey was sent to a list of all TVIs teaching in Kentucky. Of 117 invited participants, 71% responded and 62% of the questionnaires met the criteria of inclusion. Demographic data were gathered on the TVIs, including years of experience, degrees obtained, caseload size, size and type of employing district (residential or non-residential) and the extent and areas of AT training. Teachers also provided data about their student AT use, including the extent of low and high-tech use according to the student's primary learning media. Additionally, TVIs provided AT funding source data. Significant correlation was not found between the size of employing district, years of teaching experience, level of education, specific areas of AT training and the extent of
assistive technology use. Significant negative correlation was found between TVI caseload size and the extent of AT use. Significant positive correlation was found between the amount of overall AT training and the extent of AT use. Several conclusions were made from the study's results. To increase
assistive technology use by students with visual impairments, 1) TVIs should be encouraged to seek more AT training and AT providers should consider developing more on-line training, 2) training should be developed in specific AT areas according to TVIs surveyed needs, 3) TVI caseload sizes need to be smaller, and 4) TVIs need to be familiar with the large array of funding sources available for AT.

▼ Context & case You are reading the report for a master’s graduation project conducted at Delft University of
Technology. This project is chaired by prof. dr. ir. Pieter Desmet and coached by dr. Rebecca Price. The project was initiated by Margot Scheltema, an influential Dutch commissioner with multiple companies. She initiated this project because she is suffering from retinitis pigmentosa, a progressive eye disease, and will soon have to walk using a white guiding cane. However, she finds this cane too stigmatising and is looking for a more positive white cane. Research In order to get insights into possible design directions for a positive white cane, extensive user research was conducted. This research was conducted in collaboration with Visio, an institution that helps the visually impaired that is based in Den Haag. With help from Visio, three auto-ethnographic studies were conducted, as well as one generative session and three observation studies. These observation studies were conducted by means of participant observation and gave insight into how cane walkers are trained, how the visually impaired interact with
technology and how visually impaired people can be profoundly misunderstood by their environments. Independently, two observations of Margot Scheltema were conducted that gave insights into how the visually impaired are still able to live a rich life. Also, one generative session was conducted and two events were visited that include a trade fair and the Dutch retina day. The research shows that the visually impaired face multiple problems on a daily basis. These problems include increased visibility due to (the effects of) visual impairment, loss of agency, difficulty communicating (the effects of) visual impairment and experiencing a negative self-image. Some attitudes towards
assistive devices were also observed, and these are connecting the image of the
assistive device to self-image, facing the reality of the situation, not letting the opinions of bystanders affect you and being concerned about the social effects of using specific
assistive products. From these insights, four personas were created that can be places in certain situations in a journey map. These personas, combined with an extensive literature study and the journey map served as a basis to develop design proposals upon. Design proposal After some failed attempts to reaching a meaningful design proposal, a tool was created that allows concepts to be developed while keeping research front and center. The final concept consists of a modular cane that used contemporary
technology to give the visually impaired an edge in developing their unique skills and add their insights to the world. It leverages positive aspects about being visually impaired and amplifies them, making them actionable. Three embodiments of this modular, open-ended design were developed and presented in scenarios. The aesthetics of the cane were designed in such a way that it shows the technological advances it makes use of, while still having a very striking and…

▼ This study used survey methodology to investigate the experience of acquiring
assistive technology, from learning about products, to purchasing and paying for them, to evaluating how well they perform. It examined both the challenges faced and the factors that may help people acquire products. The participants were 251 adults with vision and hearing impairments, recruited from across Canada. The results revealed that the high cost of products and lack of funding for
assistive technology were the main barriers faced by respondents. Intermediaries, such as community organizations and health care providers, were found to be important facilitators of access to
assistive technology. Financial support to cover product costs increased respondents’ access to higher cost items. While the majority of respondents were quite or very satisfied with their products, hearing product consumers were less satisfied than vision product consumers, yet were likely to have paid more for their products.

ABSTRACT - Introduction: The number of people with functional limitations in activity and participation, caused by some type of disability is increasing from day to day. Assistive technology emerges as valuable resources to address these limitations by preventing, compensate, mitigate and neutralize them. Because of the scarcity of resources, there is a need to assess health technologies in order to effectively manage available resources. Therefore, it is important to reflect on assistive technologies' impact on their users biological, psychological and social levels.

▼ Proprioception is defined as the ability to know the position of the body in time and space exploiting the information arising from the periphery. It has long been recognized that impaired proprioception may severely affect the control of voluntary movements. However, the impact of these impairments on motor functions has been difficult to elucidate for two reasons: the qualitative nature of available clinical tests and the lack of instrumentation to accurately manipulate human limbs to measure proprioceptive performance. The recent advent of robotic interfaces designed for rehabilitation provides potential tools to quantitatively evaluate proprioceptive function. Up to this point, robotic devices have focused on testing single degree-of-freedom (DoF) joints such as the elbow, or were only capable of displacing or moving a joint in a single plane. The devices used to test multi-joint proprioception have a high level of complexity that require trained specialists to be implemented in clinics and can be cost prohibitive. Motivated by the lack of quantitative data on wrist proprioception and the lack of simple and cost-effective robotic protocols for assessment of arm proprioception, this thesis proposes quantitative tests which employ a 3 DoF wrist device and a low-cost planar robot. These robotic devices have first been used to evaluate the sensitivity and reliability of different robotic proprioceptive assessments in healthy individuals.
The methodologies include a psychometric task in which participants are asked to discriminate two different positions while feedback is limited to proprioception, the joint position matching (JPM) task, in which participants actively match a predefined target and a revised version of the JPM task designed to overcome the limitations associated to motor impairments often present as a result of brain damage. These studies demonstrate that the quantitative metrics are sensitive and reliable over repeated testing and suitable for proprioceptive evaluation of intact joints. The effect of handedness, available feedback and external forces on proprioceptive measures has been analyzed, as well as the role assignment in the processing of sensory feedback during bimanual tasks and bimanual proprioception.
No evidence of proprioceptive dominance was found, while there was a decline in performance when matching a target configuration which is visually and kinesthetically presented. Accuracy and precision in target matching do not change significantly as a function of an external load, while proprioceptive acuity was superior and more consistent during unimanual tasks compared to the bimanual case.
Finally, the clinical applicability and validity of the robotic assessment of proprioception was evaluated. The methodology was employed to quantitatively assess deficits in acute, sub-acute and chronic patients. The test was found to be inherently simple such that all participants, regardless of motor impairment level, could complete it in less than 10 minutes. Further, the method provides…

▼ Tremor is one of the most common movement disorders. Based on Elble and Koller' s definition, it is defined as, "the involuntary rhythmic or semi rhythmic oscillation of a body part resulting from alternating of simultaneous contractions of antagonistic muscle groups". Tremor caused by injuries or diseases such as Parkinson’s disease, stroke, etc., can be problematic both physically and emotionally. If the tremor is affecting the upper limb, the patient will have difficulties even to do activities of daily living such as buttoning, inserting key to keyhole, writing, etc, thus degrading his quality of daily life. Furthermore it may lead to social embarrassment and isolation. The cost of the treatment and the cost borne by the family and community are also significant. This thesis shows the feasibility of real-time tremor attenuation by proposing novel algorithms in an assistive technology solution. The contribution of the proposed system is using surface Electromyography (SEMG) as the sensor to detect the upper limb movement. SEMG is used because it precedes the kinematics data (accelerometer-ACC in this case) by 20-100 ms. This time lead provides the necessary time to process the information and to do real-time compensation of tremor.

▼ The human nervous system is susceptible to injury from both extrinsic and intrinsic factors such as trauma or disease. Particularly devastating injuries include stroke and spinal cord injury, where a tragically localized lesion greatly impairs motor function. Unfortunately, the central nervous system is unable to repair itself, and Man has lived with the permanent effects of paralysis, which can only be mitigated with effective rehabilitation or assistive devices. A promising method that has surfaced for stroke rehabilitation is the use of neuroprostheses, which transmits information from the brain to peripheral nerves and muscles by bypassing the damaged neural pathways.

▼ The purpose of this thesis is to determine
assistive technology-based instructions in the area of Living for postsecondary education students with autism spectrum disorder and/ or intellectual and developmental disabilities for investigating the types of AT support in improving independent living skills. An electronic search was conducted using the following databases: ERIC (Education Source version), ERIC (EBSCO host version), ERIC (ProQuest version), PsycINFO, and Google Scholar. Seven peer-reviewed journals were searched between 2008 and 2018. The references identified and relevant articles were scanned to find additional relevant literature. Papers referring to an
assistive-
technology based intervention that targets the area of independent living and be taught within the postsecondary program were included. Participants were diagnosed with ASD and/ or IDD and were enrolled in a postsecondary program designed for individuals with developmental disabilities. Only single-case studies or experimental/quasi- experimental designed studies were included. A total of 155 articles were found. The references and abstracts were saved in Endnote reference manager software for the selection process. First, 19 duplicates were found and excluded. A selection process was then carried out with the remaining 136 articles. The articles were screened by title and abstract, and 32 articles were excluded. Subsequently, full-text screening was conducted, and eight peer-reviewed articles and two dissertations were left. To conclude, the types of
assistive technology while teaching independent living skills to postsecondary students with disabilities were reported. The skills were taught by using
assistive technology were diverse. Results indicated the positive effectiveness of using
assistive technology-based instructional practices in teaching independent living skills.

▼ Conventional passive prosthetic feet cannot provide net positive mechanical energy, causing a strong reduction in push-off work. This decrease the comfortable walking speed and increases the metabolic cost of walking in amputees, as more than half of the positive work performed during able-bodied gait is done during the powered plantar flexion at the ankle joint. A possible contribution to enhance push-off is to utilize passive prostheses that can store and release energy by means of springs. This restores the push-off partially, enabling a higher self-selected walking speed and a lower metabolic cost. Effective energy release at push-off is not just a matter of higher energy storage, but the release also needs to be well timed. Controlling the release rate of energy in current passive prosthetic feet is often constrained due to the unnatural ankle joint mechanics caused by simple spring behavior. The Variable Stiffness Prosthetic Ankle-Foot (VSPA-Foot) of Shepherd and Rouse (2017) tackles this problem by using a cam and follower transmission to decouple the leaf spring mechanics from the mechanics of the ankle joint. The cam profile determines the mechanics of the ankle joint, whereas the stiffness of the spring determines the energy stored for a particular deflection. Despite achieving this control of ankle mechanics, the VSPA still acts spring-like. This means that energy is stored and released in the exact same manner. The purpose of this study was to decouple the energy storage and release characteristics. A prototype was build that uses two cam-profiles in order to do so. These cam profiles can differ in the way they store and release energy, as long as the total energy stored or released is at most equal (thereby not violating the laws of thermodynamics). By using multiple cam profiles, energy can be stored in the initial part of the stance phase. Rather than returning this energy instantaneously, it is released during late stance to enhance the push-off. This is a continuous approach to the energy recycling concept originally proposed by Collins and Kuo (2010). Implementing the energy recycling concept in the VSPA foot redesign removed the hysteresis losses found whilst using a single cam profile and showed net positive work done during the push-off phase.

▼ This study was conducted in order to determine the effects of
assistive technology versus manual communication aids on the vocabulary development of children with autism. More specifically, the researcher looked to examine the motivation and learning language of six year old children with autism. Researchers used a computer software program for a group of four autistic children and used oversized flash cards for other group of four autistic children. By giving a pre-test to both groups, equal time of intervention, and a post-test, the researcher found some interesting facts such as: children who were using computers were more interested in acquiring language and more focused. On the other hand, children who used oversized flash cards were bored and did not learn as much. Results from post tests showed that
technology is an essential tool for children with autism to learn the language.

▼ Relative infrequency of communication initiation, particularly initiations that involve attention-sharing or other social purposes, appears to negatively impact the later-life outcomes of children with autism. Strategies to improve or encourage initiation skills in autism are hampered by the need for the behaviour to be spontaneous (i.e. unprompted by a partner). One potential approach that addresses the spontaneity issue is to extrinsically motivate initiations by changing aspects of the child’s environment such that they merit, or even demand, initiating a communication. Detecting subjectively inconsistent (i.e. discrepant) aspects in game-like virtual contexts appears to be something that inherently interests young children with autism, and can motivate them to initiate spontaneous, positive communications. Initial evidence for discrepancy as a communicative motivator came from a study which re-analysed video data from an existing autism and technology project (ECHOES), illustrating that a heterogeneous group of children all reacted frequently and socially to naturally occurring (i.e. unintentional, non-designed) discrepant aspects within ECHOES. A set of high-level design principles was developed in order to capture “lessons learned” from ECHOES that might facilitate re-creation of a similar pattern of spontaneous, positive initiation around discrepancy. A second, proof-of-concept study implemented these design principles in a set of three new touch-screen games (Andy’s Garden) that sought to establish, and then deliberately violate, child expectations (i.e. provide discrepancy-detection opportunities: DDOs). Children reacted socially and positively to the new games and DDOs. The results of this study allow us to answer its overall questions affirmatively: it is possible to motivate children’s communication–specifically, their initiation–by including deliberately-designed DDOs in a set of games. These findings are the first step towards determining whether discrepancy-detection opportunities may form a component of a future technology-based communication skills intervention, capable of changing children’s initiation behaviour outside of a game context.

▼ This commentary reflects on a series of published research articles, 1996-2013, that form a PhD thesis by publication. The articles offer evidence of research into best practice relating to Assistive Technology (AT) product design as a specialist section of Industrial Design (ID). The aim of the research has been to provide AT product developers with a methodology that ordered and prioritised the application of proven research methods, design methods and design heuristics; as well as, to highlight the fundamental concepts that underpin the methodology. This commentary provides a review of the methods applied and discussion of their efficacy within each case study. The series of articles, evaluated at a meta-analysis level in the second part of the commentary, address the following research questions: 1) What is the optimum order and priority of conventional design methods, heuristics and research methods when applied within a new product development process for assistive technology products?, 2) Through a meta-analysis of case studies, are there key aspects that underpin an optimum AT-ID process? From the review, 61 research methods, design methods and heuristics were defined. An order of methods and heuristics identified some methods that were used throughout all phases of a NPD process that included literature review, benchmarking, mixed methods and participatory research. The methods and heuristics used in all phases highlighted a user-centred approach and the close collaboration with end users and stakeholders. There was also a focus of methods and heuristics around phase 2 of the 5 design process phases defined by Martin and Hannington. The critical review also highlighted key underpinning aspects that helped optimise an Industrial Design approach to ID-AT NPD. These were 1) creating a format for dialogue within the constraints of perception and 2) previous experience and the application of ethically sound protocols for the whole process. Lastly the change of terminology and attitudes of those working the Assistive Technology industry highlighted the need for more research into social acceptance of all aspects of Assistive Technology and the perception of disability from those living with impairment and by UK society as a whole.

▼ This mixed methods study examined assistive technology and its role in the world early writers. It investigated the function of word predictive and speech synthesis software in the early primary, mainstream classroom. A technology based writing intervention with 27 first grade students was carried out to assess how the use of Co:writer software affected the content of student writing. It looked at how the length of the writing sample, word use and sentence complexity was affected by this writing intervention. It also investigated how students interacted with the software and how they felt about its effect on their writing. The hypothesis was that the use of assistive technology while writing would aid students in creating more sophisticated, content rich writing samples and give students a positive feeling about their writing. Using a pre-post design, participant writing samples were analyzed for length, word use and sentence complexity. Targeted interviews and field notes revealed how students interacted with the software and how they felt about its effect on their writing. The data shows that within this study participants improved the length, and sentence complexity in their written samples.
Qualitatively participants reported that the software helped to improve their vocabulary, length of writing sample, spelling, reading and editing. This study lays groundwork for more research into the use of assistive writing technology in early mainstream participants.

▼ Patients suffering from diseases affecting verbal communication can make use of
assistive devices to improve communication. Some severely disabled patients can only produce yes-or-no responses to communicate. These responses can be created through a physical switch, eye blink, or a 'mental' click created by brain activity. The yes-or-no responses can be used to communicate by making multiple selections between two groups of letters. Through deduction paradigms the target letter can be determined. Current
assistive devices use a Row Column or Huffman paradigm to communicate. Communication rates achieved with these paradigms are slow compared to regular conversation rates and to
assistive devices using eye-tracking. Furthermore, these deduction paradigms have only been tested in
assistive devices with no or little noise. Noise affects the yes-or-no responses and leads to the selection of incorrect letters. There are
assistive devices that suffer from high noise levels which affect communication rates. This work evaluates four communication paradigms for a range of noise conditions to improve communication rates. Row Column, Huffman, and two novel paradigms are evaluated. The two novel paradigms, based on Variable-Length Error-Correcting code and Weighted Huffman encoding, are designed for environments with noise. Evaluation of these paradigms is done through simulation and human experiments. A mathematical model is developed for simulation, and an emulator emulating an
assistive device is used for human experiments. Spelling speed and cognitive effort are used as performance measures. The simulations were shown to be useful as a tool for predicting the relative performance of the paradigms in real use situations. Results from the simulation and experiments found that the effect of noise is paradigm dependent and should be taken into consideration. A novel paradigm was shown to be optimal for selective noise conditions. Row Column scanning scored the best on cognitive effort, while Huffman encoding resulted in the fastest typing speed in almost all noise conditions. Through emulation and simulation, Huffman encoding is validated as the optimal paradigm to increase communication rates. The mathematical model set a basis on which more research into optimal communication paradigms for discrete control
assistive devices can be conducted.

This work researches visually-impaired person\'s dificulties when studying music as a university career, where musical information is usually forwarded as ink-printed sheet music and the translation of this material to braille involves specic skills and resource availability. In that sense, the musical production demanded from a blind student is accomplished by using braille notation, for taking notes or producing homework for disciplines like Harmony, Musical Analysis, or even to take tests. Clearly the information produced has to be submitted to a conversion process, and finally it can be reviewed by the professor or other students. The main focus of this research is the understanding of braille music aspects and the problem of generating automatic ink-printed sheet music transcriptions, providing assistive resource for music students. For attaining this goal, an application was developed in order to receive braille music input and translate it to MusicXML format, which can be read by any of the widely MusicXML compatible softwares available for reading, editing and printing music. The program is distributed as free software under LGPL license, as opposed to currently available alternatives. The resulting application was tested by visually-impaired and non-visually…

▼ Abstract:
Assistive Technology (AT) is causally related to the social inclusion and participation of people with disabilities. Even though there were significant improvements in legislation and policies along the years, many national and international studies have been drawing attention to difficulties in availability, access and use of AT resources and training. The purpose of this study is to discuss AT in the context of the diffusion of innovation, focusing on the role of public policies and mediation processes and consequently on the access to resources by people with disabilities. The study methodology comprises: a systematic literature review; a documentary research on public policies, juridical documents and national reports; interviews and questionnaires with expert users and professionals, who utilize AT resources, more specifically in the visual impairment area. The literature review consisted of the analysis of 718 articles that culminated in the selection of 164 publications, of which 65 fulfilled the criteria to compose the corpus for the discussion of emerging topics, relevant in the current national and international scenario: the system perspective, the importance of national plans and the state action regarding the market and the organization of Service Delivery Systems. The online questionnaires and the interviews followed a semi-structured script, with 11 themes distributed in closed and opened questions. Fifty-three (53) participants answered to the survey, 38 in questionnaire format and 15 in interview format, according to the preference mode. The distinct characteristics of these instruments were considered in the analysis. The narratives addressed the diffusion and mediation processes, the types of mediators and the challenges and recommendations to the enhancement of practices related to these processes. The outcomes corroborate the literature analysis. The participants refer to the State as the major agent in AT diffusion and claim for the expansion and strengthening of public policies and programs, as the ones related to cost reduction, improvements in accessibility and professional training. The narratives analysis in a system perspective indicates that the combination of these factors affects and constitutes the AT diffusion and mediation processes. The recommendations to the enhancement of these processes include: creation of teaching and learning spaces, valorization and formalization of innovative solutions, inclusion and strengthening AT in the curriculum of areas that constitute this interdisciplinary field, highlighting the role of Universities in the diffusion, mediation and training. The study turns available for actors that constitute the AT System (users, professionals of different areas, researchers, managers and public policy makers) the main international debates related to
Assistive Technology innovation diffusion and mediation, discussed through the systematic literature review and analyzed in its relations to the challenges present in the Brazilian context.

▼ For persons with disabilities, their impairments lead to many inconveniences in their daily life. Luckily,
assistive technology devices can help compensate functional limitations and enable them to participate in the activities of daily life. In 2010, there were 126,693 disabilities in the Kaohsiung area. Subsidies provided by Kaohsiung city government and Kaohsiung county government reach respectively NT39,145,000 and NT 25,489,000 in 2010. Nevertheless, such great amount of money invested does not work as it has been expected. There appear to remain a number of barriers. One such example would be that persons with disabilities lack the knowledge about
assistive technology, so they do not know where to ask for help in the first place. On the other hand, lack of consideration for the needs of a person with disability result in them getting inappropriate
assistive technology devices. These problems deserve the attention of government and related associations.
This research aims to solve the problems between the supply and demand of
assistive technology devices or services. It reviews and studies papers concerning the same issue in an attempt to create a new service platform. This platform is created according to information and suggestion gathered from experts of this field and voice from users of
assistive devices. Their voices and assessments provide valuable direction to shape this new platform.
This research assesses the possibility of this new
assistive technology service platform from several aspects, including its political, legislative, supplying, and demanding dimensions. The purpose of this study is to reorganize diverse resources to provide a more convenient information-gathering method and to offer a complete service for disabilities people.
