ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Bitumen based road surfacing seals and asphalt wearing courses have been used by society's Engineers "to counter the damage to the existing unsurfaced roadways by the newly developed automobile with its rubber driving wheels" since the early 1900's. Early experiments were conducted with both tar and bitumen to find a suitable material to alleviate the situation, and ongoing research has been carried out through the past century and into the new millennium, throughout the world, examining improvements, from materials used, to design and construction methods. However, there is still much to be understood, improved and refined, when considering road surfacing seal design. Pavement designers have the choice of utilizing either an asphalt (graded aggregate remanufactured with a bitumen binder and applied as a complete product) or a surfacing seal (including variations of bitumen binder sprayed onto the road surface, with the addition of single size stones, either in one or two layers of binder and aggregate, i.e. single or double seals) as a pavement wearing course. Current road surfacing seal design practice depends on empirical analysis and experience, being primarily a volumetric based assessment of bitumen application. This research project assesses South African seal design philosophy, investigates design areas where review or updating is required to accommodate changing bitumen sources and types, and traffic loading. Seal performance criteria are examined, with the development of a matrix of influences on seal performance. Using this, the need for a seal design method based on mechanistic material properties is proposed, and the prototype example of such a numerical model using finite element method is presented. To contribute further towards a performance related seal design method, the feasibility of modelling of road surfacing seals using mechanistic principles was examined. The potential of developing failure and fatigue criteria or relationships to enable assessment of the expected seal performance, with inclusion of different component material characteristics and variations, varying traffic and environmental conditions, was also examined. From assessment of literature, and understanding of the components of the seal, pavement, and influencing factors, a choice of numerical model of seal performance was made. The Finite Element Method (FEM) Analysis was selected for the purpose of modelling seal performance. The model was developed to enable examination of the interaction of individual seal components (i.e. stone and bitumen), at micro-mechanic scale. The prototype 3-dimensional numerical seal model was undertaken in 2002 and 2003 at Technical University Delft, using the CAPA research program. ▼ It is well known that most road construction projects in Ethiopia and Addis Ababa city are exposed to time and cost overrun or both. It becomes difficult to complete road projects in the allocated cost and time. Therefore, this research was carried out to dig-out information on the factors that cause time overrun on Asphalt road construction projects in Addis Ababa City administration. The aim of this research is to assess factors contributing for time overruns on road construction projects in Addis Ababa city Administration in the views of road construction stakeholders. Questionnaire survey was used to collect data on causes of time overrun. A total of 47 questionnaires from owner (AACRA), contractors and consultants were collected on the common factors to contribute for time overrun on asphalt road construction projects completed from 2000-2005E.c in Addis Ababa city administration by using a purposive sampling technique and analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statistics. Secondary data (asphalt road construction projects completion report) was used to know the real extent of time overrun on the projects understudied. From the result, it was found that 80% of the projects suffered time overrun. The most important causes of time overrun were found to be slow cite clearance, contractors’ financial problems, Inflation, progress payments delay by owner, inaccurate cost estimation, and delay in commencement. Spearman rank order correlation analysis was used to evaluate whether consensus of views exists between groups of respondents (owner versus contractor, owner versus consultant and contractor versus consultant). From the analysis of the results, it was found that there is no consensus of opinion between owner versus contractor and owner versus consultant respondents on the factors that cause time overrun but there is consensus between contract and consultant respondents. ▼ The extensively used AASHTO structural design procedures for flexible pavement indicate the required pavement design in terms of a structural number. For a particular pavement thickness design, this structural number can be computed from the sum of each pavement layer's thickness multiplied by its strength parameter, called the structural layer coefficient. The research work reported herein presents methods for determining the structural layer coefficients for asphalt emulsion-aggregate mixtures. A hot plant-mixed asphaltic concrete was evaluated for structural layer coefficient, and the radial stress vs. fatigue failure relationship was developed using circular specimens and the Jimenez deflectometer. Relationships between structural number and load repetitions to failure for different loading conditions were developed. These relationships were used to evaluate the structural numbers of other specimens when tested to failure in flexural fatigue. Three asphalt emulsion-aggregate mixtures were designed using CSS-lh asphalt emulsion. The aggregates used for the three mixtures were: (1) Type I aggregate using dense-graded, crushed, river gravel; (2) Type II aggregate using pit-run, coarse sand; and (3) Type III aggregate using a silty sand. These mixtures were evaluated for Marshall stability, Hveem stability and cohesiometer value, unconfined compressive strength, double punch tensile strength and dynamic modulus of elasticity at various ages from 3 to 28 days. Flexural fatigue life, when tested in the deflectometer, was determined for all mixtures at 7 and 28 days. Structural numbers for the specimens and structural layer coefficients for the mixtures were determined. Relationships were developed between the evaluation tests performed and the structural layer coefficients at various mixture ages by using test results from the three mixtures and a regression analysis procedure. A fourth asphalt emulsion-aggregate mixture using CSS-lh asphalt emulsion and a Type II crusher-run aggregate was designed. Evaluation tests were performed at 3 and 7 days and layer coefficients for the mixture were predicted for 7 and 28 days using the regression equations developed. Layer coefficients at 7 and 28 days were also determined by testing specimens in fatigue in the deflectometer and computing their structural numbers and layer coefficients. Layer coefficients determined in these two manners indicated favorable comparisons. The results of this research provides information about the structural layer coefficients for asphalt emulsion-aggregate mixtures. The relationships between the evaluation tests and structural layer coefficient can be used for determining layer coefficients for other asphalt emulsion-aggregate mixtures. Because the evaluation tests used were tests commonly performed in most asphalt laboratories, these determinations can be made without the necessity of additional equipment or procedures in most cases. ▼ This thesis documents and discusses the analysis of material properties and pavement performance for Highway 17 and Highway 655 pavement trial sections located in northern Ontario. The object of this work was to compare laboratory-aged material with recovered asphalt cement and to develop an improved chemical aging method that provides asphalt cement that more closely reflects properties after 8-10 years of service. Physical testing of the asphalt cements was done using a bending beam rheometer (BBR) and double-edge-notched tension (DENT) test for laboratory aged material as well as recovered material from the road. The comparison of the regular BBR, extended BBR and elastic recovery test in BBR is also done for the laboratory-aged and recovered material. Two simple modifications to the regular pressure aging vessel (PAV) aging protocol were investigated as possible ways to improve the correlation between field and laboratory material properties. The length of the PAV aging was doubled to 40 hours and the weight for each pan was halved to 25 grams. It was observed that the presently used RTFO/PAV aging protocol does not produce sufficient aging. Hence, the conditions chosen were more severe and therefore are likely to bring the laboratory aging closer to the field aged condition. It was found that both the increase in time and the reduction in weight were able to accomplish the stated objective for most but not all asphalt cements. A separate investigation involved the infrared (IR) analysis of asphalt cements recovered from a large number of contracts in eastern and northeastern Ontario. This study indicated that those asphalts with a largely paraffinic structure (low aromatics index) showed excessive and premature cracking even at lower levels of oxidation (carbonyl index). In contrast, those pavements that were largely spared of thermal distress were constructed with asphalt cements that contained more aromatics (high IR aromatics indices). Aromatics allow the largely aromatic asphaltenes that are formed upon oxidation to remain well peptized rather than flocculated. Peptized asphaltenes allow for good stress relaxation during winter and spring thaw and thus such materials show a reduced tendency for cracking.

Det här arbetet handlar om asfaltbetongblandningar och hur variationen av dessa vid projektering påverkar vägarnas dimensionering i överbyggnaden mer specifikt bärlagret. Arbetet är baserat på litteraturstudier av den senaste teorin kring dimensionering av asfaltbetongblandningar i väglager samt tillhörande kravskrifter både från svenska och amerikanska myndigheter. Den inledande delen i examensarbetet omfattar bakgrunden till vägdimensionering. Inledningsvis behandlas materialet asfaltbetong och derss egenskaper för att sedan gå vidare till allmänt om vägar, hur de utformas, vägens funktionella egenskaper och skador som kan uppstå. Detta ska ge läsaren tillräckligt med bakgrund för att följa med i resten av arbetet där man kan läsa mer ingående om deformationsskador och vilka parametrar som är till stor vikt när man studerar skador som uppstår i asfaltbetongen samt relationen till dem egenskaper bitumen har. Rapporten avslutas med att resonera kring eventuella problem kring dimensioneringsmetoder samt betydelsen av blandningens hållfasthetsegenskaper och hur de påverkar vägarnas tjocklek. Slutsatsen i rapporten är att asfaltbetongblandningen har en betydelse för dimensionering av bärlager och att det kan vara någonting att beakta oftare vid vägdimensionering speciellt vid blandningar som skiljer sig mycket från standardvarianterna.

This essay is about bitumen concrete pavement mixtures and how the variation of these affects the design of the superstructure of the road during the design-stadium, more specifically the pavement. The essay is based upon studies of literature written about the latest theory of asphalt concrete design for roads as well as the texts with regulations from Swedish and American government agencies. The introductory parts of the essay consist of the background to road design. Initially bitumen concrete and its characteristics are discussed and move on to general information about roads, how they are designed, the roads serviceable characteristics and finally the damage that can develop. This is meant to give the reader enough background to follow the rest of the essay where you can read more about deformation and which parameters that are of importance when you study deformation in bitumen concrete as well as the relation between the characteristics of bitumen concrete and bitumen. The essay is then finished with a argumentation about eventual problems with design methods and the significance of the bitumen concrete mixture’s strength parameters and how they affect the thickness of the road superstructure. The conclusion is that the asphalt concrete mixture has an impact on the design of the pavement of the road and that it should be something to take into account more often in road design, especially when you are using a mixture that differs much from the standard mixtures.

▼ ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Flexible pavement designers have a choice of two wearing course: either asphalt concrete or surfacing seals. The latter have been widely used by several countries as their preferred wearing course over other methods, especially countries with a limited number of average inhabitants per square kilometre. Moreover, the surfacing seals were identified as an efficient cost effective road preventive maintenance technique. Surfacing seals in New Zealand, South Africa and Australia cover about 65%, 80% and 90% of their surfaced road networks respectively. The preference of surfacing seals is due to their competitive initial cost and ease of construction. In South Africa, the life expectancy of surfacing seals varies between 8 and 12 years with an average of 10 years. This has not been the case in a number of surfacing seals constructed in winter, especially when the night recorded temperature is below 10 °C. The dominant failure mechanism is ravelling (chip loss) soon after construction due to traffic loading. This chip loss is linked to the poor adhesion bond development rate in the bitumen-aggregate system during winter adverse conditions. In order to address the issue of premature chip loss the need for the development of a robust adhesion test method was identified. For that purpose, recently, researchers in the bitumen industry developed the Bitumen Bond Strength test method. This method was used in this study. This study intends to contribute to the understanding of binder-aggregate adhesion bond development for winter surfacing seals using the BBS test. Binder type, precoat type and conditioning, aggregate type and curing time are amongst the factors influencing winter seals adhesion bond performance. An experimental matrix involving three types of binder, two types of aggregate, four different precoating fluids, two precoat conditionings and two binder-curing times were then developed and investigated. Winter weather parameters affecting adhesion properties were also taken into consideration during the course of the investigation. Throughout the test, the procedure described in AASHTO TP 91-11 was followed. However, in order to enhance the control of the binder application temperature, a new method for hot applied binder sample preparation was developed as part of this study. The findings show that there is a significant difference between adhesion properties of the hot applied binders (70/100 and S-E1) and the emulsion (SC-E1). In most of the cases, the hot applied binders performed better than the emulsion. The failure mode observed was found to be linked to the condition of the precoating. The influence of the precoat type and conditioning, and effect of binder curing time were significantly highlighted. The use of a dry precoat benefited the adhesion bond strength up to around 50% relatively to the corresponding non-precoated combination. However, a decrement in the bond strength due to precoating of up to 28.7% was also observed. Phase 1: Regular field monitoring was undertaken using the GripTester and the Dynamic Friction Tester measurement devices on seven sites in the Auckland and Northland Regions of New Zealand was undertaken over a three year period. The effects of temperature, rainfall, contaminants, new surfacings, geometric elements and aggregate properties were analysed to investigate factors that initiate changes in the measured skid resistance of pavement surfacings. Phase 2: Laboratory prepared samples were constructed for accelerated polishing and skid resistance testing of four different aggregates (two greywackes, a basalt and an artificial iron-making melter slag aggregate). The samples were polished in an accelerated polishing machine to an ???equilibrium skid resistance??? level (Stage 1 polishing). Contaminants were then added to the accelerated polishing process to determine the effect of varying additive, particle size and hardness in an attempt to simulate seasonal and/or short-term variations that occur in the field. The results have demonstrated that significant and previously unpredictable variations (greater than 30%) in measured skid resistance can occur over short time periods. These variations cannot be explained by any one factor. They are the result of a number of inter-related factors, including the geological properties of the aggregates and the contaminants themselves, the previous rainfall history, the road geometry, the calendar month of the year and (depending upon the measurement device), the temperature during testing. The laboratory tests demonstrate that accelerated polishing tests of aggregate samples could be prepared for testing by the Dynamic Friction Tester and that significant variations in measured skid resistance could be simulated on various aggregates in the laboratory by the addition of contaminants. The results of the testing and addition of contaminants on various aggregates resulted in significant behavioural differences which were related to the geological properties of the aggregates themselves, as well as the contaminants used in the accelerated polishing process. The findings of the research have specific relevance to three areas of industry; Road Controlling Authorities who are primarily interested in skid resistance policy, standards and management, Road Asset Managers who operate, maintain and manage condition level and the safety aspects of the road network and Crash Investigators who collect and analyse crash data primarily for legal proceedings. ▼ Noise levels due to road traffic have reached intolerable high levels in and around many urban areas all around the world. Because of health reasons and reasons of well- being these noise levels have to be reduced. The noise produced from the interaction between the rolling tyre and road surface is one of the most important contributions in the overall traffic noise. Therefore solutions for noise level reduction have to be found in that interface. A noise reducing pavement is considered as an effective way to reduce the tyre - road noise from the source where it generates. Towards further understanding and improvement of the noise reduction ability of pavements, research was carried out in this PhD thesis to determine the relationship between the road material properties, surface characteristics and the noise levels, and to develop models which can be used for guiding the design of noise reducing pavements. As one of existing road surfaces, the thin layer surfacing eliminates the tyre - road noise by combining a small surface texture and a high porosity. In recent years, it became popular for using it on urban and provincial road sections in the Netherlands and some other European countries. Replacing porous asphalt with thin layer surfacings on highways is also considered an option in the Netherlands. As there are limited investigations on the relation between tyre - road noise and the influencing parameters for this type of surface, the research in this thesis focuses on thin layer surfacings. The study starts with a review of existing researches on tyre - road noise. It provides basic knowledge about tyre - road noise and the influencing parameters related to the road surface. The related measurement methods and models developed were summarized. Comments were made on these existing studies and the shortcomings were pointed out. A research plan was then proposed based on the comments of the current researches and aiming for improving the existing knowledge of tyre - road noise on thin layer surfacings. Measurements were carried out for investigating the influence of mixture compositions on surface characteristics. Both laboratory and in-situ measurements were involved. In the laboratory tests, thin layer surfacing samples with different mixture compositions were designed and produced; core samples were also used which were drilled from trial road sections in the Netherlands. The surface characteristics studied included: surface texture, sound absorption, mechanical impedance and stiffness. Methods for testing the surface characteristics and mixture compositions were discussed. Experimental work was also undertaken for developing new methods in testing the surface characteristics. A contribution of this thesis to tyre - road noise related measurement is the application of a new type of technology for measuring the sound absorption of a road surface. ▼ The purpose of this research was to determine the effect of full-depth reclamation (FDR) on the strength and durability of aggregate base layers in a coordinated approach involving both field and laboratory testing. Field comparisons between the pre-reclamation neat base and post-reclamation blended base were supplemented with laboratory experiments conducted to determine the effects of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) content, compaction effort, and heating on the strength and durability of roadways reconstructed using FDR with a portable asphalt recycling machine (PARM). Also, the effect of reclamation on the spatial uniformity of the pavement structures was explored by comparing variability in the pre- and post-reclamation material properties. Test sites in Orem, Utah; San Marcos, Texas; and South Jordan, Utah, were selected for this research. The results of field testing indicate that the FDR process significantly increased the stiffness and/or strength of the base material at two of the test locations and did not significantly change the third base material. An evaluation of spatial variability indicated that the FDR process produced equivalent or lower spatial variability with respect to both base modulus and California bearing ratio (CBR) values at one site, while the other two sites exhibited equivalent or higher spatial variability after FDR. The results of laboratory testing for all three locations indicate that specimens compacted using the modified Proctor method exhibit significantly higher CBR values and dry densities than specimens compacted using the standard Proctor method. Also, the CBR values for specimens tested in the dry condition were significantly higher than those obtained from specimens tested at optimum moisture content. These results demonstrate the value of achieving a high level of compaction during construction and preventing water ingress into the pavement over time. The blended material exhibited a significantly lower CBR value than that of the neat material at only one location; the addition of RAP to materials at the other locations did not significantly change the CBR values of those materials. In the tube suction test (TST), most of the specimens were classified as marginally or highly moisture-susceptible, and the effect of RAP on the dielectric value in the TST was of no practical importance. The use of PARMs in the FDR process is an acceptable, economical, and environmentally friendly approach to reconstruction of flexible pavements. To ensure satisfactory performance of FDR projects, engineers and managers should carefully follow recommended guidelines for project selection, pavement testing, material characterization, design, construction, and quality assurance testing.

Over the past decades, the buoyant economy, growing population and increasing freight volumes have created high demand for new road pavements as well as the maintenance of current road networks. The construction and maintenance of the road pavements require large amounts of aggregates. Due to considerable usage of various natural aggregates for constructing roads, these materials have started to deplete gradually. At the same time, the generation rate of solid waste in the society is increasing with the increase of population, technological development, and changes in the life style of people. The management of solid wastes has become an acute problem due to enhanced economic activities and rapid urbanization. Moreover, according to World Commission on Environment and Development (1987), sustainable development is defined as the development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Therefore, referring to the importance of the sustainability and all the above mentioned issues, the utilization of recycled materials and waste materials in the manufacture of new asphalt mixtures is addressed in this research, in order to follow the sustainability concept. Using waste materials in asphalt mixtures conserves natural aggregates, reduces the impact on landfills, decreases energy consumption, can provide cost savings, and generally results in significant economic and environmental benefits. In spite of the benefits mentioned above, designing asphalt mixtures containing waste materials can be challenging and complex. In this regard, it is necessary to review a wide variety of engineering and geotechnical considerations for asphalt mixture design, as the application of wastes should not influence the structural and functional aspects of the pavements. Among various factors, which would be considered in designing an asphalt mix, permanent deformation, and stress/strain characteristics are the most important factors from the perspective of structural and geotechnical stability. Evaluation of asphalt mixtures in terms of these engineering properties is necessary as they define the structural performance and strength of an asphalt pavement. In fact, these properties influence the ability of the mix in withstanding the destructive effects of traffic and environment. In light of this, many researchers have studied the behaviour of asphalt mixtures containing waste materials through different tests and approaches to predict the performance of the asphalt surface layer under traffic load and environmental conditions. A partir dos anos 1980, iniciou-se na França o uso de misturas asfálticas de módulo elevado (EME - Enrobé à Module Éleve) em intervenções de pavimentos para a restauração de vias urbanas e de trechos de rodovias sujeitas a tráfego pesado e intenso. Estas experiências tiveram como principais finalidades reduzir a deformabilidade e as espessuras das camadas do pavimento, elevando sua rigidez e melhorando seu comportamento mecânico quanto à deformação permanente e à vida de fadiga, em comparação com outros materiais convencionais. Com base nos estudos paramétricos, esta pesquisa analisa as deflexões, tensões e deformações atuantes nas diversas camadas da estrutura de um pavimento, a fim de estudar o comportamento de camadas de EME empregadas nos serviços de restauração. Desde que sejam conhecidas as condições estruturais do pavimento existente e do futuro tráfego, pode-se definir rapidamente as características geométricas e mecânicas das misturas de EME a serem empregadas nas camadas sobrejacentes das restaurações de pavimentos. São apresentados os ensaios laboratoriais com misturas de EME para definição do projeto de mistura, comportamento mecânico, Prensa de Cisalhamento Giratória (PCG - Presse à Cisaillement Giratoire) e deformação permanente, cujos resultados atenderam às especificações técnicas. Esta pesquisa conta com a execução de um Trecho Experimental na rodovia Presidente Dutra, localizado no município de Jacareí/SP, que é sujeita a tráfego pesado e intenso. Durante a sua execução, não foram verificadas dificuldades adicionais de usinagem e de execução em pista. Neste trecho composto de três diferentes seções experimentais, variando-se a espessura da camada de base de módulo elevado, foi avaliado e comprovado o bom comportamento estrutural do pavimento com mistura de EME como base asfáltica para restauração do pavimento de rodovia com tráfego muito pesado.

Since 80s it has started in France the use of high modulus asphalt concrete (EME - Enrobé à Module Éleve) in pavement interventions for the restoration of urban roads and some sections of highways with heavy and high traffic. Those experiences had the main purpose of reducing deformability and decreasing layers thicknesses of the pavement, which could raise its strength and improve its mechanical behavior, concerning rutting and fatigue life, in comparison to other conventional materials. Based on a parametric studies, this research analyses deflections, tensions and deformations that act in all pavement structure for studying the behavior of EME layers in restorations. Since structural conditions of the existing pavement and the future traffic are known, it can be rapidly defined the geometrical and mechanical characteristics of EME mixtures for being used as wearing courses in pavement restorations. Laboratory tests were carried out with EME in terms of mixture design, mechanical behavior, French gyratory compaction (PCG - Presse à Cisaillement Giratoire) and rutting and the results were in compliance with technical specifications. I dagsläget utförs underhållsbeläggning på ca 5 % av det statligt ägda vägnätet i Sverige varje år [1]. Därutöver utförs förstärkning av ca 1400 km/år vilket motsvarar 1-2 % [2]. Vanligtvis används metoden asfaltspåläggning även kallad AG-förstärkning vid förstärkningsåtgärder. Metoden innebär att bundet bärlager beläggs direkt på den befintliga vägen följt av ett nytt bundet slitlager. [1, 3] Varje förstärkningsobjekt har olika förutsättningar. Detta innebär att åtgärden får olika proportioner beroende av var objektet som förstärks är beläget geografiskt. (se bilaga A & E) Bitumen är en kostsam råoljeprodukt som används vid asfaltsproduktion som bindemedel. Varje år importerar Sverige bitumen för ett belopp i miljardklassen. Dessutom är framställning av bitumen inte en miljövänlig historia. [4] Vid utförandet av AG-förstärkning läggs nya asfaltsmassor på den befintliga vägbanan, vilket vanligtvis bidrar till en höjning på ca 10 cm [1, 5]. Höjningen av vägbanan medför att sidoräckena kan bli för låga och kan därmed bli till en “snubbelkant” och öka vältrisken [6]. Vid AG-förstärkning ges inte någon god tjälisolerande effekt. Detta kan leda till kort hållbarhet, eftersom orimligt tjocka lager asfalt skulle krävas för att uppnå samma isolerande effekt som vid förstärkningsåtgärden rekonstruktion. [16] (se bilaga A & E) Vid rekonstruktion tas den äldre asfaltbeläggningen bort och det obundna bärlagret förstärks innan en (ofta återvunnen) asfaltsbeläggning läggs på [1, 3]. Denna metod innebär en större höjning av vägbanan än vid AG-förstärkning och kräver mer arbete i sidoområdet med förlängning av trummor, höjning av sidoräcke, justering av innerslänt m.m. vilket leder till högre kostnader (Se TABELL 11) [1]. I rapporten utförs en livstidskostnadskalkyl för de två olika metoderna för förstärkning vid en rad olika förutsättningar för landsvägar. Investeringsberäkningar har utförts genom kalkylprogram och bärigheten har analyserats genom Trafikverkets programvara ”PMS objekt”. Resultatet visar att vid raksträckor är nuvärdesinvesteringen upp till 15 % högre vid rekonstruktion, samtidigt som den har en positiv inverkan på trafiksäkerheten och något längre livslängd. (Se TABELL 11)

▼ This project was initiated as a way to explore possible applications for dynamic road markings on highways. During rush hour some of the shoulder lanes are opened for traffic. These lanes are known as rush hour lanes (‘spitsstrook’ in Dutch). Matrix signs with green arrows indicate that the road user is allowed to use the lane that is usually only used in case of emergency. To access this lane road users have to cross the thick solid marking. User research on resting areas next to highways was performed to find out if the experience on rush hour lanes differed from regular highways. Using stickers road users were able to express their experiences. Especially the diagonal line marking that the road user has to cross at the beginning of a rush hour lane causes confusion for many road users. The line communicates that the road user should divert suddenly from the lane he or she is driving on, which is in conflict with the matrix signs that indicate that the road user is allowed to drive on the rush hour lane. A concept was proposed that transforms the road image using dynamic road marking. This road marking allows the road marking to be consistent with the current state of the road. When the rush hour lane is open, it will have the same appearance as a regular right lane. In order to change the road layout between the open and closed states, a transition needs to take place. These opening and closing transitions take place while the road is in use, making the road change while the road user is driving on it. In order to design, test and analyze the dynamic road marking concept, a tool was developed. The proposed design changes gradually over the width of the carriageway. The individual road marking elements either fade or morph into a different marking. The concept was tested with 45 participants who drove in the simulator, and experienced part of the rush hour lane in all four states; closed, opening, open, and closing . ▼ A well-functioning, long-lasting and safe highway infrastructure network ensures the mobility of people and facilitates the transport of goods, promoting thus environmental, economic, and social sustainability. The development of sustainable highway infrastructure requires, among other activities, the construction of pavement systems with enhanced durability. Moisture damage in asphalt pavements is associated with inferior performance, unexpected failures and reduced service life. All of these contribute to the increase of operational and maintenance costs in order to fulfill the intended service life of the pavement system. Moreover, global warming and climate change events such as temperature extremes, high mean precipitation and rainfall intensity may further increase the probability and rate of pavement deterioration. This dissertation aims to obtain an advanced understanding of the influence of moisture on pavement durability by developing a set of tools, i.e. experimental methods and computational models, which will provide insight into the fundamental moisture damage processes and on their impact on pavement systems. Based on this knowledge, researchers and practitioners will be able not only to design pavements with increased resiliency, thereby providing reliable services to road users, but also to minimize the risks in the face of changing climate conditions. Moisture diffusion is well-known to degrade the mechanical properties of asphalt mortars, namely bitumen, filler and sand, thus increasing the propensity of pavements to cracking. To determine the changes in the cohesion properties of the mortar, uniaxial tension tests were performed. Mortar samples were prepared and then subjected to five combinations of moisture and thermal conditioning, in an attempt to reproduce the various conditioning states that pavements undergo in the field, before being tested. Tensile strength and fracture energy were used to evaluate the changes in mechanical properties due to the various conditioning protocols. To post-process the experimental data, a new data analysis procedure was suggested in order to obtain a more accurate calculation of fracture energy. The procedure uses nonlinear finite element analysis to specify the unloading response outside the fracture zone, and then utilizes this information to compute the fracture energy of the binders. This methodology yields a framework for the calculation of fracture energy when only force-displacement data are available and therefore the estimation of the true stress-strain curve is not feasible. The experimental investigation revealed the deteriorating impact of moisture on the fracture characteristics of asphalt mortars, especially as regards to their low temperature properties. These effects were not reversible upon drying. On the contrary, the application of a drying cycle caused embrittlement of the mortars and indicated that continuous wet and drying cycles in the field may result in materials with poor performance characteristics.
