▼ The present thesis aims to analyse the manner in which the ethnically and culturally diverse environment of Eastern Anatolia during the Hellenistic era has influenced the royal houses of the Mithradatids, Ariarathids, Ariobarzanids and Commagenian Orontids. The focus of analysis will be represented by the contact and osmosis between two of the major cultural influences present in the area, namely the Iranian (more often than not Achaemenid Persian) and Greco-Macedonian, and the way in which they were engaged by the ruling houses, in their attempt to establish, preserve and legitimise their rule. This will be followed in a number of fields: dynastic policies and legitimacy conceptions, religion, army and administration. In each of these fields, discrete elements betraying the direct influence of one or the other cultural traditions will be followed and examined, both in isolation and in interaction with other elements, together with which they form a diverse, but nevertheless coherent whole. The eventual result of this analysis will be to demonstrate how the intersection of cultures and the willing appropriation by the ruling houses of what we might call, using a modern term, ‘multiculturalism’ has created a new, interesting and robust tradition, whose influence would endure well into the Roman era.

▼ The legal and political position of the Jewish population of the Imperium Romanum is an oft-debated and exceedingly complex topic. After all, the attitude of the Roman state towards its Jewish subjects varied substantially over the course of the Judeo-Roman relationship, ranging from explicit legal advancement in the form of honours and exemption from military service to open military conflict in the form of three Judeo-Roman wars. A number of scholars have attempted to resolve the apparently contradictory evidence, and form a generalized picture of ‘the’ attitude of ‘the’ Roman state towards ‘the’ Jews. While their descriptions of this Roman attitude vary strongly, they overwhelmingly assume that centralized Roman policy was ultimately what determined the experience of Jews throughout the Empire. This thesis will discuss how local circumstances influenced the legal and political treatment of the Jews in the Roman Empire, focussing on the case studies of Alexandria and
Asia Minor. By studying the inception, contents and implementation of Roman legislation on Judaism, this thesis will argue that local factors were of fundamental importance to each of these three phases, and that intervention of the central government occurred primarily to deal with extraordinary circumstances. Thus, while local and interregional events were often connected, the existence of a single, coherent Roman policy towards Jews throughout the Empire ultimately cannot be proven.

▼ Research on public architecture and its development in the poleis of Asia Minor from the Hellenistic to Roman imperial period has often tended to focus on individual building types and to regard them as a series. This approach overlooks a building's role in the overall cityscape and its intended effect on the observer. Yet studies which examine the notion of the cityscape for ancient observers often make only a passing reference to the archaeological record. The identity of this observer has also tended to be ill defined. The observer, who was either a resident or visitor to these cities, experienced public architecture as well as other objects on public display, and derived meaning from their placement, decoration and overall connection to the cityscape. This thesis will consider the social and historical context as well as the archaeological record in regard to the development of different types of public architecture and other displays in specific poleis in Asia Minor. The placement and motivations for these elements' construction, their role in the cityscape and their reception by those who experienced them will be discussed. The period discussed begins with the increased diffusion of Classical-style poleis in the 2nd century BC, and ends at the beginning of the 3rd century AD. This study will employ a number of carefully chosen case studies: Balboura, Lyrbe/Seleukia, Pessinus, Ephesus, Pisidian Antioch and Kremna; and thus will apply a specific rather than general approach. The discussion will consider the evolution and character of these poleis' cityscapes and the effect they had on ancient observers. By doing so, a greater understanding of the overall cityscapes' contemporary meaning and the impact of these public displays will be gained.

▼ Was there such a thing as "orthodoxy" in earliest Christianity? That was the question raised by Walter Bauer in his classic monograph, Orthodoxy and Heresy in Earliest Chrsitianity. Bauer argued that the traditional Eusebian reconstruction of the primitive church was markedly defected, and against that reconstruction, he contended that heretical movements of the second century had as good a claim to apostolic traditions as did the catholic movement.
Although I agree with Bauer that the traditional reconstruction of the early church is unsound, I do not find that Bauer has offered a reconstruction engendering any firmer confidence. I challenge Bauer at two points. First, in chapter three, I attempt to determine whether Bauer's reconstruction makes sense of all the evidence. Then, I analyze the process by which groups come to self-consciousness. That is a two-sided matter. One is the fixing of a pool of acceptable diversity in which a group relates itself to the larger world of diversity (chapter four). The second is the process by which a group excludes various other diverse positions (chapter 5). Attention to these matters makes possible a more sensitive evaluation of the complexities that confronted the Christian community as it sought to define itself.
Having confined my investigation to the most significant area of the Christian mission at the turn of the century, my work provides a fresh reconstruction of the primitive church in western Asia Minor at a time when the process of self-definition was becoming the controlling issue.

▼ As one of the most popular gods in the Greek and Roman world, Dionysos inspired artists of virtually every medium. This resulted in a rich iconographic tradition that stretches over eleven centuries. Dionysos' continuous popularity in both public and private life, however, cannot be traced in all media. The mosaics of Greece and the coast of Asia Minor are at the present time the only medium in Greece and around the Mediterranean which allows us to trace Dionysiac imagery for over nine centuries. This thesis collects forty-three mosaics from Greece and the coast of Asia Minor, and analyzes their iconography, compositional schemata, and architectural context.
By following the long history of Dionysiac mosaics in the Greek world, by examining their iconographic and stylistic characteristics, and by comparing them to similar representations in other media and on mosaics from different regions, we are able to trace the development of the iconography of Dionysos and his followers. But we are also able to address questions which are central to the overall mosaic tradition in Greece, such as for example the role that Greece played in the development of mosaics in the ancient world; methods and problems of chronology; controversies relating to suggestions of an unbroken Hellenistic tradition that lasted well into the imperial period; influences from developments in the West; and outside cultural influences in the Roman imperial period. Furthermore, the Dionysiac mosaics of Greece and the coast of Asia Minor raise questions which are important for mosaics from all regions of the ancient world, such as the method of transmission of motifs and the tendency of modem scholarship to assign specific non-residential uses for buildings which contain more than one Dionysiac mosaic .

▼ The period of Roman rule is marked by the stark transformation of cities across the Mediterranean. Aqueducts, baths, and fountains sprouted up from the prosperous conditions of the high imperial period, and with the introduction of urban forms and practices emerged a shared cultural community out of diverse peoples. Local variation of course persisted, and my dissertation project interrogates the specificity of place in this process. I examine the transformation of the cities of Asia Minor over the course of Roman rule (133 BCE – 620 CE) through the lens of topography and water management, asking how local culture and sense of place profoundly affected the form and the extent to which resources and technologies of empire brought change.I focus on the interconnection of topography, infrastructure, and urban image in four cities: Side, Aizanoi, Arykanda, and Rhodiapolis, which represent a range of topographical situations and a shared entanglement with Roman technology and culture. I first use the evidence of topographical, archaeological, and textual records to analyze the influence and role of water in shaping the city physically, culturally, and perceptually. I next look at the forces that spurred the intensification or reconfiguration of water management and use, arguing that homogeneity in infrastructural elements was only one aspect that contributed to urban character; their urban context and the histories allowing for their creation brought an inherently local quality to empire-wide forms. Lastly I examine how socio-political structures altered the way water was exploited and made available, considering the physical effects of water on the social body, and how seemingly ordinary encounters with the urban water network signaled deeper, more complex systems of power. My study shows how the power of place shaped the nature of this interaction more deeply than previously considered. I call for a change in the way one thinks about regional cities and urban transformation under Roman rule. Roman forms altered the existing urban character and created forms and practices shared across the empire. However, these forms were perceived differently based on topographic and cultural landscape upon which they were imprinted; locale and locals changed the meanings.

Purpose of the present work is the systematic analysis of three monuments of the ancient city of Hierapolis in Phrygia (Pamukkale, Denizli, Turkey), which are distinguished by the Doric order: the porticus of the lower terrace of the Apollo Sanctuary, the Marble Stoà and the façades of the Frontinus Street. The research is based on the analytic examination of the architectonical blocks and, in the first place, aims at gaining the ancient image of the buildings developing graphic reconstructions of their plans and fronts, but also wants to define the “life” of the monuments, their practical and ideological meaning in the urban context. Special attention is given to the study of the technical and morphological aspects, to understand the relationships of the local workshops with those of the other cities of the Meander valley. The analysis of the Doric buildings of Hierapolis goes together with the study of the architectural patterns developed during the Hellenistic age in Asia Minor, to achieve the correct view of the local context in the creation of new architectonical types. The chronological definition of the buildings, by means of the analysis of stylistic features, epigraphical and stratigraphical data, allows us to define with more details the urbanistic history of Hierapolis during the Ist century A.D.

▼ The last twenty years have seen an increasing interest in ancient economic studies, and especially criticism of the primitivist approach to the ancient economy. Although the current state of ancient economic studies shows a range of different approaches, and has produced new models to interpret the ancient economy beyond the great debate between the modernists and the primitivists, there is still room for discussion of both old and new approaches to the study of urban economies. This thesis studies the resources and the economy of Roman Nicomedia, a city where systematic excavation has not yet been conducted but where archaeological survey research has being carried out since 2005. The aim of this study is to assess the production, consumption, and distribution patterns of the city within its own dynamics. In terms of methodology, it takes into consideration Louis Robert’s work on the Bithynian cities within the longue durée and accordingly, evaluates accounts from the pre-industrial period of Nicomedia, modern İzmit, under the Ottoman Empire. This study particularly takes into account the travellers’ notes from the 18th to the 19th centuries along with available primary and secondary sources in order to grasp the moments of the transformation and change in the production and consumption patterns in Nicomedia/İzmit over time. Finally, the thesis, which synthesizes textual and material evidence from Nicomedia as well as from the region of Bithynia, ascertains the city’s income and expenses. The thesis challenges the Finleyan idea of self-sufficiency and scrutinizes the limits of the ‘consumer city’ model. By focusing on the case of Roman Nicomedia, rather than falling into generalisation, this study attempts to investigate the effects of production and consumption patterns in the development of the non-agricultural sector in general, and pays particular attention to the underestimated role of trade in the urban economy. The thesis also evaluates the role of the Roman state and army in the economy of the city and asks whether this should be seen as a stimulus or burden affecting consumption and distribution patterns. This study therefore examines the resources, the self-sufficiency, the commercial commodities, trading activities and the level of connectivity of Roman Nicomedia. The case of Nicomedia should encourage other case studies to reveal the dynamics of urban economies under the Roman Empire.

The Armenian Genocide (1914-1916), recognized by some scholars as the prototipe of the modern genocide, is denied by the turkish government even today, despite the protests of the armenian community around the world. Officially, Turkey recognizes that many people died in the period, but denies the genocidal intent. At the same time or little before. The greeks the other major minority of the Ottoman Empire also suffered with massacres and persecutions, resulting in hundreds of thousands dead, experiencing similar situations as those suffered by the Armenians. In the same period, nationalist and imperialist movements led to great losses of territory of the Ottoman Empire, forcing, as a result, the mobilization of hundreds of thousands of muslims, escaping from the Christian rule, who settled at Anatólia, stressing the etno-religious conflicts. Today, those stories are still a reason to argue, even if forgotten or silenced by some groups. The intention of this work is help on the elucidation of the polemica, collecting a set of informations that may allow a wider understanding of the subject. Using the specialized historiography, we tried to catalogue and compare the many opinions of authors, whose speeches are complementary or even opposing, as well as the official version of the Turkish government, posted at the Ministery of Foreign Affairs website. Here is added the voices of the survivors and the statements of foreign missionaries and…

▼ The thesis concerns the study and description of the local dialect of Triglia in Bithynia. The introductory chapter of this thesis offers a historical overview of the region of Triglia, a research on the different aspects of the local dialects of Bithynia, as well as an attempted linguistic mapping of the area and a comparison with the local dialects of Eastern Thrace. In addition to this, historical and sociolinguistic factors that affected the formation of the dialect of Triglia are marked out. The last section of the introduction describes the various sources of material of the thesis. The chapters regarding the description of the dialect (Phonetics, Morphology, Vocabulary and the comments on Syntax) offer a comprehensive description of the phenomena of the dialect of Triglia, while comparing them with the neighbouring local dialects as well as with dialects of the mainland of Greece. In the last chapter, the conclusions drawn from both the survey of the dialect and the comparison with other dialects in Bithynia and Eastern Thrace are presented. Appendix includes extracts of idiomatic speech and maps of the area.

The rural milieu – 4.The historical milieu: the Anatolian mid-west during the Antonine period – 5.'The land of heathen orgies': ethnicity, culture and religion as the backdrop for Montanism – 6. Conclusion: the revelations of the new prophecy.
The second century religious movement known to most historians as Montanism has attracted attention from historians of the early Church and historians of religion more generally since antiquity and since the Renaissance has been a topic of many speculations and theories. Unlike its contemporary 'Gnosticism,' with its abundance of literary sources and startling discoveries, the assessment of Montanism has been largely confined to a fixed catena of literary sources. However, since the nineteenth century epigraphic remains attesting the movement have come to light and an increasing amount of historical and archaeological data concerning the areas of rural Anatolia where Montanism thrived has come to light. Concurrently with this has been the great strides made in the research into indigenous religious movements and the interaction of religion and society across cultures. This study seeks to look anew at a series of historical theories proposed about Montanism and to assess their veracity in light of an eclectic historical and methodological approach. It is the major conjecture of this study that Montanism cannot be understood as a reified theological entity, but rather as a socio-religious phenomena inseparable from its socio-cultural surroundings.

▼ The focus of this thesis is the nature of the interaction between the civic elites and the civic coinage for which they were responsible. The Roman Province of Asia provides the ideal context for the study of local elites and their coinage because of the prevalence and prominence of the names of individual local notables, henceforth known as eponyms, recorded in civic coin legends. By combining the study of the function of coin eponyms and the prosopographical analysis of individual eponyms in the epigraphic record, it is possible to identify and explain the profound changes that affected civic coin production in the first three centuries AD. Local elites perceived coinage not only in terms of a functional means of exchange, but as a medium for personal and civic display. In this way the local elites exploited coin iconography in ways that paralleled other media of monumental display. New coin legends were developed, which identified explicitly the dedicatory nature of the coinage and the iconographic repertoire of coin types was radically expanded to express the cultural agendas and priorities of the civic elites. The first half of the thesis is devoted to the study of the relationship between office holding and coinage and the development of coin legend formulae during the first three centuries AD. The pattern and distribution of the various legend formulae is analysed in order to determine the extent of the eponym’s involvement in the production of coinage. In particular, this section intends to establish the extent to which coinage production was funded privately. The fourth chapter is arranged into a series of case studies discussing individual cases of personalized coin iconography. The final chapter of the thesis outlines how the civic elite’s conceptualization of coinage changed over the course of this period. It is argued that contact with the Roman monetary tradition affected civic elites’ attitude to coinage and that this manifested itself in the iconography and the fabric of the coins themselves.

▼ My dissertation situates public space at the heart of a Greek city’s efforts to negotiate its position in the networks of power that comprised the Roman Empire. It focuses on the annual assize tours Roman governors conducted through the provinces of
Asia and Lycia-Pamphylia, and, drawing on a wide range of literary, epigraphic, and archaeological evidence, shows how, in the cities that hosted them, these tours provided local elites with opportunity to use the spaces in which a governor was welcomed and performed his duties as a means of both modeling his conduct and appropriating his prestige.
The exposition is divided into five parts. The first part reviews the imperial policies that environed the dialogue between governor and city, and illustrates how Roman power both shaped and was shaped by the provincial spaces in which it was exercised. The second part explores how mid-imperial Roman governors were conditioned to regard Greek cities as settings in which their authority had special conditions and implications. The third part examines in detail the ideal of the stable, orderly, and cultivated polis that imperial Greek notables sought to convey to important visitors. The fourth part considers how a Greek city could, through the ceremonies surrounding a governor’s arrival, present its built environment as both an index of its status and a template for the legitimate exercise of Roman authority. The fifth and final part investigates the extent to which local elites influenced a visiting governor’s engagement with the sites in which he performed his duties.
This research significantly nuances our understanding of how Roman power worked in the provinces. Most immediately, it allows greater appreciation of the leverage civic elites possessed in their dealings with imperial representatives. More generally, by illustrating the extent to which local notables cooperated in both the creation and the presentation of their cities, it outlines a way of understanding the formal public spaces of the imperial period as constructs and instruments of elite political goals. Most broadly, it reveals the intimacy of the connections between imperial policy, the ambitions of local notables, and the appearance of provincial cities.

▼ The aim of this study was the presentation and the analyzation of the functional role of athletic education/sports activities, intellectual education, moral and socio-political education, as well as military education in the context of the institutions of the Gymnasium as well as the Ephebeia in the Minor Asia, during the 1st century BC. Primary sources of this research were inscriptions-mostly honorary decrees. The epigraphic material was extracted, basically, through the digital/online platform-data base of the Packard Humanities Institute-Project Centers Cornell University & Ohio State University https://epigraphy.packhum.org., as well as through a series of related collections and works (notably Supplementum Epigraphicum Graecum-SEG, et al.). Information from works of art, archaeological testimonies and secretarial sources have also been exploited. Initially, (79) seventy-nine inscriptions were selected, of which nineteen were selected from the following cities: Mylasa, Aphrodisias, Iasos, Priene, Erythrai, Philadelphia, Sardis, Apollonis, Pergamon-by the method of “purposive sampling”. Methodologically, the descriptive and explanatory/interpretive type of historical research in Physical Education-basically-was used. Also the philosophical method (in Physical Education), as well as research approaches of the social history and history of the concepts were used. The results of the study were distinguished in quantitative and qualitative level. At a first level (quantitative), the references found in the inscription material, were recorded on: a) the didactic/educational subjects, b) the officials (Gymnasium-Ephebeia), c) the agonistical/competitive element (institutional/ functional presence, educational value) and d) kalokagathia (educational and state-sociopolitical ideal). At a second level, the qualitative characteristics and the semantic importance- the "specific weight" of the above mentioned structural axes of the research were analyzed in relation to the wider socio-political context. In conclusion, it can be said that the orientation of paideia in Asia Minor in the 1st century BC seems to maintain the basic characteristics of the ancient Greek model of paideia (all-out/completed somatic, intellectual and socio-political education, agonas/contest, kalokagathia) but with some differentiations. Somatic education-athletic activities and military exercises-coexist with intellectual education as well as with moral education. Nonetheless, intellectual education and moral and socio-political education seem to be more highly valued than the others. The prototype of the studious, polymath and virtuous young man who is ready to serve his homeland-mainly-at the political/diplomatic level is rather dominant.

▼ Previous attempts at understanding Revelation have stressed the common links between it and the rest of the New Testament writings, or else have tended to ignore entirely its distinctive perspective on the world. This thesis illuminates the content of John's unique message in respect to its particular life-situation. There are nine chapters and the first deals with a review of the date and authorship of the Apocalypse while the second looks at how genre criticism can help us understand the audience's predispositions and the author's strategy. The third chapter is also concerned with literary criticism in that it looks at how John presents himself to his audience and how this gives us clues to his social standing within the seven assemblies named in the text. Chapters four and five look in detail at John's use of two important titles, God as 'the Almighty' and Jesus as 'the Lamb'. Chapter six deals with the usefulness of sociology in helping us understand the dynamics of the life-setting in Asia Minor by reference to research on sects and millenarian movements. Chapter seven covers the manner in which Rome ruled and compares this to the brutal and vindictive images in Revelation. Chapter eight looks at how the Apocalypse differs from the indigenous religions of Asia Minor (especially the cult of Ephesian Artemis), the Jews in Sardis and the early Christian works of 1 Peter and Ignatius of Antioch. The ninth chapter forms our conclusions. John of Patmos wrote an apocalypse to seven named assemblies in Western Asia Minor. This was a genre with which his audience was familiar. He attempted to gain their confidence in Rev 1-5 by using a number of literary devices which stressed that he was a legitimate bearer of a transcendent message. The message was so unusual in its malevolent imagery that he needed to assure his audience that they could be confident in accepting his analysis of the world around them. John and his followers can be best characterised as a revolutionist sect and even a millenarian movement. Such groups separate themselves from the wider world and expect its imminent end. They tend to come from marginalised groups deprived of power and status. John's message was unique among the early Christian texts in that it presents Jesus in the role of a theriomorphic avenger and God is seen as the Almighty who wreaks indiscriminate torture and then utterly destroys his enemies. Such images are drawn as a counterpoint to John's understanding of Roman rule as violent and repressive. In response to this understanding he forms a theology based on brutality, vengeance and cruelty and desires power, honour and wealth, the crucial values in the Roman world, for the Almighty God and his most ardent followers.

▼ This thesis examines the evidence for Jewish communities in Asia Minor from the third century BCE through to the third century CE and beyond. The study begins with a discussion of the founding of the Jewish communities in Asia Minor, the nature of Roman support for these communities, and their religious concerns as they are revealed by the literary sources available to us. Chapters 2 to 4 present and analyse the evidence for five particular communities - those at Sardis, Priene, Acmonia, Eumeneia and Apamea. The evidence from archaeology, inscriptions, numismatics and literary sources is discussed in an attempt to draw together the material into a coherent account of the nature of Jewish communal life in these cities. Chapters 5 to 9 are thematic studies. The prominence accorded to women in some Jewish communities and in the cities of Asia Minor is discussed in Chapter 5. In Chapter 6 the use of the title(^a)'T'taro? for Yahweh and for pagan deities is analysed, along with the supposed link between Jewish communities and Sabazios. The existence of a number of "God-worshippers" in the synagogues of Asia Minor is discussed in Chapter 7. Chapter 8 discusses the provision of water sources in the synagogues of Asia Minor and relates this to Jewish purity concerns. Chapter 9 addresses the issue of Jewish communities and local and Roman citizenship and discusses the evidence which suggests that in some places Jewish communities were well integrated into city life.Concluding remarks draw out some of the implications of this study for our view of Diaspora Jewish communities. It seems clear that in Asia Minor Jewish communities were involved in and a part of the cities in which they lived whilst also retaining their identity as Jews. We can also recognise a significant diversity of Jewish life in Asia Minor, with local factors providing a strong formative influence on these communities. Yet they all saw themselves as worthy and legitimate heirs of Old Testament faith.I confirm that no part of the material offered has previously been submitted by me for a degree in this or in any other University.

▼ From beginning to end, the epistle of 1 Peter is concerned with responding to the conflict in which the Anatolian readers have presently become involved. Nevertheless, throughout the history of Petrine scholarship the nature of this problem has generated significant disagreement. Within the most recent discussion, however, a general consensus has been reached. Virtually all commentators now tend to agree that this conflict is a kind of unofficial, local hostility which arose sporadically out of the disdain from the general populace and which was expressed primarily through discrimination and verbal abuse. Ultimately, though, this position rests on a number of undemonstrated contentions which have never been examined through comprehensive and detailed socio-historical inquiry. The present study is intended to take up the question afresh and to thereby rectify the significant missteps through which the topic has been previously approached. Our purpose is to determine the nature of suffering in 1 Peter by situating the letter against the backdrop of conflict management in first-century CE Asia Minor. To do so, we seek to understand the different means by which conflict was dealt with in Roman Anatolia and how the persecutions of 1 Peter fit into this larger context. Part of this goal is to examine how conflict affected different social groups within the community as a way of determining the various forms of suffering to which specific members may have been prone. Therefore, our efforts consist of an attempt to differentiate the readers’ troubling experiences by providing a detailed “social profile” of the letter’s recipients and to contextualize the conflict situation by locating the problem and its subsequent resolution strategies within the world of first-century CE Asia Minor

The present work deals with the Greek funerary rites and monuments via the most relevant iconographic and written sources (vases, stelai, paintings, laws, epigrams, literature, etc.) dating back to the Classical and Hellenistic times. The interest here is to abide by the specific mode of functioning of each source so that one source should not be perceived merely as the sparring-partner of another, and so as to be able to fully appreciate whatever they are bound to convey. Even though we are first and foremost dealing with Art History, relying on the sources that are most likely to serve our purpose, the present essay is also strewn with additional archaeological examples purporting to reinforce its central thesis; it is intent also on presenting the reader with as accurate a vision as possible. Based on a comparative system, the present essay takes into account the area of the Greek world comprising Greece proper, including Macedonia, Asia Minor, and, to a lesser extent, Southern Italy. It divides into three main parts. The first part focuses above all on rites from the standpoint of the living people who perform them. The second part deals more specifically with the figure of the deceased as such, as well as with the monument marking his/her burial-place. The third part consists of an analysis of the sources so as to point out their categories of contributions while examining whether they might or might not be subsumed by a specific vision of death.

I specifically focus on the development of differential object marking, the loss of grammatical gender distinctions, and the neuterisation of noun inflection. My aim is to provide a diachronic account of the innovations that Cappadocian has undergone in the three domains mentioned above. !ll the innovations examined in this study have the effect of rendering the morphology and syntax of nouns in Cappadocian more like that of neuters. On account of the historical and sociolinguistic circumstances in which Cappadocian developed as well as of the superficial similarity of their outcomes to equivalent structures in Turkish, previous research has overwhelmingly treated the Cappadocian developments as instances of contact-induced change that resulted from the influence of Turkish. In this study, I examine the Cappadocian innovations from a language-internal point of view and in comparison with parallel developments attested in the other Modern Greek dialects of Asia Minor, namely Pontic, Rumeic, Pharasiot and Silliot. My comparative analysis of a wide range of dialect-internal, cross-dialectal and cross-linguistic typological evidence shows that language contact with Turkish can be identified as the main cause of change only in the case of differential object marking. On the other hand, with respect to the origins of the most pervasive innovations in gender and noun inflection, I argue that they go back to the common linguistic ancestor of the modern Asia Minor Greek dialects and do not owe their development to language contact with Turkish. I show in detail that the superficial similarity of these latter innovations’ outcomes to their Turkish equivalents in each case represents the final stage in a long series of typologically plausible, language-internal developments whose early manifestations predate the intensification of Cappadocian–Turkish linguistic and cultural exchange. These findings show that diachronic change in Cappadocian is best understood when examined within a larger Asia Minor Greek context. On the whole, they make a significant contribution to our knowledge of the history of Cappadocian and the Asia Minor Greek dialects as well as to Modern Greek dialectology more generally, and open a fresh round of discussion on the origin and development of other innovations attested in these dialects that are considered by historical linguists and Modern Greek dialectologists to be untypically Greek or contact-induced or both.

Although the archaeological excavations, carried out since the end of 1960’s, have substantially increased our knowledge on Greek city of Marseilles, our documentation on the Archaic Period remains restricted in the field of local productions. Sculture and its craft are poorly represented and the important series of 44 aedicules in limestone, found in the rue Négrel during the 19th century, still the only testimony for the existence of local workshops, which produced an iconographic type directly derived from a Greek model, created in Asia Minor, and most probably introduced through the Phocaeans – or perhaps by other groups of Ionian settlers – after 545 BC. These pieces of sculptures represent of small temple or shrine (naiskos in greek), within which a female deity is seated. The previous studies have focused on the identity of the goddess : several possibilities were envisaged before the interpretation as Cybele was privileges, but this attribution has raised a considerable debate. The present research is devoted to the analysis of this ensemble and more generally, to the study of aedicules with seated woman in the Phocaean, Ionian and Aeolian cities in the Archaic Period. As a matter of fact, the series from Marseilles can only be understood within a large-scale reflection, embracing the whole development of the type, from its creation at Miletus in…

During the Hellenistic Period there was an intensification of movement within Anatolia. After Alexander’s conquest, Asia Minor became, in effect, for Greeks and Macedonians a necessary stepping stone for travel to the East. This thesis begins by studying the infrastructure which facilitated the mobility of people and goods, in particular roads and their facilities, as well as navigable rivers and maritime routes which connected the harbours of Asia Minor. Different case studies demonstrate the existence of local, regional and supra-regional road-networks in this area. The second part of this thesis explores the influence of institutions on the organisation of circulation and the different ways in which authorities could encourage the circulation of goods and people – includingthe creation of infrastructure, the control of mobility, and different economic and financial policies. In conclusion, this thesis examines the conditions of travel from the perspective of the traveller, including religious preparations, the choice of means of transport and accomodation as well as the means travellers used for planning their journeys and navigating and what these tell us about how space and distance were conceived.

Pisidia, a mountainous region in southwestern Asia Minor, is a real toponymic conservatory of Anatolian culture and languages. Our thesis deals with the toponymy and ethnonymy of Pisidia and the persistence of Anatolian languages in the toponymy of the region. Toponymy and ethnonymy reveal the territorial control of each settlement, whether it be Anatolian population or exogenous settlements (mainly Greek and Roman). Indeed, by choosing the language used to create the name of the place or the people, we learn more about the region. After having produced a catalog of toponyms and ethnonyms of the Pisidia classified by types and after having discussed their origin using linguistic arguments for each one, we study the Greek presence and the Roman colonies by considering the successive domination in regard to toponymy. Several themes were discussed : the question of the control of the region during the Hellenistic period, the Seleucid foundations, as well as the Roman colonies founded by Augustus. Then we focus on the identity of the Pisidians, studying the question of their origin and the topoi associated with them. The continuities and territorial cleavage of Pisidia are discussed before a toponymic panorama showing a linguistic classification and a semantic classification of toponyms based on the semantic repository (water, relief, vegetation, etc.). Most of the place names are descriptive and refer to elements of the landscape.

Our study handles the question of public buildings built in Asia Minor during the flavian Period (69/96 A.D.).Our researches led us to have a reflection about the different people intervening in the projects and to showsome traces of their activity. Even if they are rare, the textual sources, such as dedications, bring manyinformations about the evergetes, and offer some details on the cooperation between the patrons, the curatorsand the imperial administration. The detailed study of the architectural elements, revealing some productionskills, allowed us to have a reflection about the structure of workshops in Asia Minor and led us to offer, insome case, a view of their course between different buildings sites of the end of the first century A.D. Thisstudy naturally got associated with others handling the question of block construction, showing the importanteffort developed to achieve standardisation in Asia Minor, and more specifically at Ephesus under Domitian. We also studied the reception and spreading of setting models and showed the contrasted influence of Rome onthe flavian creations in Anatolia, because of the presence of strong cultural traditions in this country. Thus, limited endogenous creations show that local craftsmen were able to innovate, often using basis of ancienthellenistics models. Finally our study…

▼ Religion has always impacted how we structure the physical world around us, and the Roman world was no exception. Roman cities were constructed and shaped around religious life and religious practices. Religious art was omnipresent, and religious architecture monumental. When Christianity displaced all traditional cults and became the primary state religion in the Roman Empire during Late Antiquity, religious life and religious practices changed significantly. This study investigates how changed religious life and religious practices in Late Antiquity reshaped Roman cities in Western Asia Minor, concentrating on the three cities Ephesus, Aphrodisias, and Hierapolis.
Written sources from Late Antiquity – laws and saints’ lives – can create the impressions that pagan material culture was violently destroyed, and that pagan statues and temple buildings were the main foci of Christian destruction. The fate of pagan material culture during the Christianisation has traditionally mainly been investigated using textual rather than archaeological sources. This has led to a persistent view of the religious transformation as characterized by polarisation, violence, and intolerance. Further, investigations have focused mainly on the types of material culture most frequently described in these texts: pagan temples and statues. The present study falls in line with several recent critical studies arguing that the Christianisation process was more complex and dynamic, and that the rapidly growing archaeological record should be used to reassess and nuance persisting narratives of destruction and decline.
The study analyses how material culture can be used as agents of societal change, and what part pagan material culture played in the religious transformation in Late Antiquity (c. 350–620 CE). The analytical concept memory manipulation is employed in order to 1), reassess Christian responses to pagan material culture that are established in scholarly debate, such as conversion and destruction, and 2), reassess the categories of pagan material traditionally associated with the Christianisation, such as temple buildings and imagery. Rather than destroying pagan material culture, memory manipulation entails altering how material things are perceived and how material things interact with their surroundings through small and large alterations. Ultimately, memory manipulation alter how material culture is remembered by a society. By employing the concept of ‘memory manipulation’, the Christianisation process can be understood as constructive and future-oriented rather than expressions of intolerance and anger.
Beyond temple buildings and statues, the study encompasses a wider range of material manifestations of cult than the traditional foci, and included monuments, sacred spaces, imagery, and inscribed materials in the public areas of the cities in the analysis. The study considers removal, mutilation, spoliation, disposal, appropriation, and reconfiguration as memory manipulation strategies in addition to destruction and conversion, …

▼ The Asia Minor Catastrophe caused an unprecedented, for the time, mass movement of the Greek Orthodox populations of Asia Minor to Greece. An important part of this refugee flood was moved to Greece, through the Northeast Aegean Islands, which functioned as a base for their regrouping and transfer to the mainland. Samos, a Northeastern Aegean Island, initially functioned as a place of care for thousands of Asia Minor refugees, and then, during the Inter-War period, became the permanent residence for 6,000 refugees. This thesis seeks to present important aspects of social integration, economic activity and political behavior of the Asia Minor refugees in interwar Samos. The first part of this thesis analyses the demographic presence of the refugees on the island, determines their geographic distribution in the urban and rural areas and attempts to communicate their efforts as regards their housing rehabilitation. In the second part, presented are the directions of the professional activity of the refugees in Samos, as well as the contribution size of the urban and rural refugees to the island’s economy. It is perceptible that the impact of Samos refugees on the island’s economy is influenced not only by the directions of their activities, but also by the broader economic developments on local, national and global level, during the interwar period. Finally, the third part of this thesis explores the political preferences of refugees, mainly through the analysis of the political features of those mechanisms, which facilitated their gradual integration into the interwar Samos.

▼ The aim of this study is to present different aspects of social life in the eastern border during the time of composition of the text that describes the achievements of the hero Basilius Digenis Akritis. Taking into account the literary character of the work and the difficulties in dating with precision the society it is alluding to, an effort is made to understand it as a useful source for utilizing it from a historical point of view. The intention is to record the social and historic elements of the text, with the support of parallel narrative sources of the middle Byzantine period, in order to present a more coherent picture. The study examines the presence of the Muslims in the geographical sphere of the text, in the context of their settlement in Byzantine territories, their intermarriages, their proselytism to Christianity and their assimilation in the Byzantine society of the eastern border. It also points to the various places of conflict and peaceful coexistence of the two worlds. Additionally, it examines the deeds of Digenis, tracing his journey from the highlands of central Asia Minor to the banks of the Euphrates river and beyond to the north. The hero’s social contacts are analyzed, pointing to the various groups of people that compose the anthropological circle of the work, representing various social levels of the eastern border, including high-ranking individuals, military corps, rustic inhabitants, literate individuals, persons of lower social classes, as well as various people under the service of a military oikos of the eastern border. It further evaluates what is available for the period’s social structure, behavior codes, daily functions and amusement activities, as well as important events of everyday life of a military oikos of the eastern border. Following the events portrayed in the text, the study reveals the spirit of tolerance and the social dimensions of Christian-Muslim relationships. It records what was known for the places of worship and religious practice of Islam. The Muslims of the text were shown not as significant opponents, warriors and raiders but as followers of another faith, who in spite of their conflicting interrelations, with the passing of time, were treated without hostility and managed to coexist with the Byzantine element but under conditions.
