▼ In this thesis we studied the stability of a binary liquid film flowing down a heated porous inclined plate. It is assumed that the heating induces concentration differences in the liquid mixture (Soret effect), which together with the differences in temperature affects the surface tension. A mathematical model is constructed by coupling the Navier- tokes equations governing the flow with equations for the concentration and temperature. The effect of substrate permeability is incorporated by applying a specific slip condition at the bottom of the liquid layer. We carry out a linear stability analysis in order to obtain the critical conditions for the onset of instability. We used a Chebyshev spectral collocation method to obtain numerical solutions to the resulting Orr-Sommerfeld type equations. We also obtained an asymptotic solution which yielded an expression for the state of neutral stability of long perturbations as a function of the parameters controlling the problem. We present our findings by illustrating and interpreting our results for the critical Reynolds number for instability.

atingem a norma?
The main goal in this dissertation is to study the versions for compact operators of
Lindenstrauss property A and B. In the course of our work, we present results concerning
weak-star topology, Schauder basis, approximation properties, Banach spaces that locally
depend upon finitely many coordinates, strictly convex spaces, uniformly convex spaces,
among others. In 2014 Miguel Martín answered positively the following question: Are
there compact operators between Banach spaces that can not be approximated by compact
operators that attain their norms? In order to do that, he introduced two properties called
properties Ak and Bk or versions for compact operators of Lindenstrauss properties. In
this dissertation we present some results regarding Lindenstrauss properties A and B, and
we also provide several results regarding properties Ak and Bk.

The purpose of this work is to understand how intrinsic shape of individual fibers controls the collective behavior of fiber stacks, in particular the mechanical (elasticity) and electrical properties. We consider long fibers, aligned towards one preferential direction with a significant disorder shape. Our study is experimental and numerical. We propose a two dimensions self consistent mean field model which describes the collective elasticity from the individual properties of fibers : the disorder distribution and the bending modulus. We obtain an equation of state which describes with a good agreement the stacks elasticity, without any fit parameters, however up to a multiplicative constant. We obtain similar results between experimental and numerical studies.

This thesis focusses on some approximation properties which generalise amenability for locally compact groups. These properties are defined by means of multipliers of certain algebras associated to the groups. The first part is devoted to the study of the p-AP, which is an extension of the AP of Haagerup and Kraus to the context of operators on Lp spaces. The main result asserts that simple Lie groups of higher rank and finite centre do not satisfy p-AP for any p between 1 and infinity. The second part concentrates on radial Schur multipliers on graphs. The study of these objects is motivated by some connections with actions of discrete groups and weak amenability. The three main results give necessary and sufficient conditions for a function of the natural numbers to define a radial multiplier on different classes of graphs generalising trees. More precisely, the classes of graphs considered here are products of trees, products hyperbolic graphs and finite dimensional CAT(0) cube complexes.

Godefroy and Ozawa have proved that there exists a compact space with a free space failing the approximation property. Then it is natural to ask what are the metric spaces whose freespace has the bounded approximation property. Grothendieck has proved that a separable Banach space with the approximation property has the metric approximation property. This result justifies why it is interesting to know whether a free space is a dual space. The first chapter is dedicated to duality. First we introduce a result to prove that a Banach space is a dual space, under some conditions. Then we explain how to use it in the context offree spaces and finally we apply it to countable or ultrametric proper metric spaces. In the second chapter, we study the metric approximation property of free spaces overcountable proper metric spaces. In the third chapter, ultrametric spaces are investigated. We prove first that the free spaceover a proper ultrametric space has the metric approximation property, is isomorphic to l1 andadmits a predual isomorphic to c0. Finally, in collaboration with P. Kaufmann et A. Proch`azka,we prove that the free space over a ultrametric space is never isometric to l1 and we generalizethis result to some subsets of separable R-trees.

▼ In this thesis, we study the operator algebraic structure of various classes of unimodular free quantum groups, including thefree orthogonal quantum groups On+, free unitary quantum groups Un+, and trace-preserving quantum automorphism groups associated to finite dimensional C^\ast-algebras.
The first objective of this thesis to establish certain approximation properties for the reduced operator algebras associated to the quantum groups \G = On+ and Un+, (n ≥ 2). Here we prove that the reduced von Neumann algebras L^∞(\G) have the Haagerup approximation property, the reduced C^\ast-algebras Cr(\G) have Grothendieck's metric approximation property, and that the quantum convolution algebras L1(\G) admit multiplier-bounded approximate identities.
We then go on to study trace-preserving quantum automorphism groups \G of finite dimensional C^\ast-algebras (B, ψ), where ψ is the canonical trace on B induced by the regular representation of B. Here, we extend several known results for free orthogonal and free unitary quantum groups to the setting of quantum automorphism groups. We prove that the discrete dual quantum groups \hG have the property of rapid decay, the von Neumann algebras L^∞(\G) have the Haagerup approximation property, and that L^∞(\G) is (in most cases) a full type II1-factor. As applications of these and other results, we deduce the metric approximation property, exactness, simplicity and uniqueness of trace for the reduced C^\ast-algebras Cr(\G), and the existence of multiplier-bounded approximate identities for the convolution algebras L1(\G). We also show that when B is a full matrix algebra, L^∞(\G) is an index 2 subfactor of L^∞(On+), and thus solid and prime.
Finally, we investigate strong Haagerup inequalities in the context of quantum symmetries arising from actions of free quantum groups on non-commutative random variables. We prove a generalization of the strong Haagerup inequality for \ast-free R-diagonal families due to Kemp and Speicher, and apply this result to study strong Haagerup inequalites for the free unitary quantum groups.

In this thesis, we study the combinatorial and operator algebraic properties of certain free compact quantum groups. We prove in chapter 2 that the duals of the quantum reflexion groups have, in most cases, the Haagerup property. In chapter 3, we describe the fusion rules of the free wreath product of a discrete group by the quantum permutation group. To do this, we describe the interrwinner spaces berween certain “basic” corepresentations of these free wreath products in terms of non-crossing partitions decorated by the elements of the group . This provides a whole new class of compact quantum groups whose fusions rules are explicitly computed. We give several applications of this result. We prove that, in most cases, the reduced C*-algebras associates with these free wreath products are simple with unique trace. We also prove that the associated II 1 factors are full. To conclude, we extend the result of chapter 2 to the free wreath products of finite groups by the quantum permutation group.

▼ The physical and chemical properties of gold nanoparticles were investigated using first-principles density-functional theory in the local density approximation. The low-energy structures of gold nanoparticles containing from 3 to 38 atoms were determined using a combination of semi-empirical potential and DFT calculations. At the DFT-LSDA level, planar structures persist up to Au6 and lie close in energy to the 3D ground-state structures for 7 ≤ n ≤ 10 atoms. Ordered structures are predicted as being stable for n ≤ 9. Beyond this size, disordered structures dominate with the notable exception of the tetrahedral Au20. The present DFT calculations predict numerous structural isomers being energetically equivalent or lying close in energy to the ground-state structures. The HOMO-LUMO energy gap is found to decrease as the cluster size increases, which indicates a transition towards a metallic behaviour at larger sizes. The thermal behaviour of gold clusters containing 7, 13 and 20 atoms was investigated using isothermal density-functional molecular-dynamics simulations. At each size, the global minimum energy structure and a low lying isomer are used as the starting structures. In most cases, the clusters exhibit high-temperature melting without showing any sharp transition from a solid-like to a liquid-like phase, but rather pass through a region of transformation between structural isomers. The starting structure used in the simulation is shown to have a considerable effect upon the subsequent thermal behaviour. The Au20 ground-state structure contrasts with the other clusters and remains tetrahedral up to its melting at about 1200 K. The adsorption of Au2o on a regular and defective (100) MgO surface was investigated using a combination of DFT MID simulations, single-point calculations and structure optimisations. Au20 is found to bind quite weakly to the regular (100) MgO surface, favouring Au-O interactions. The Mulliken population analysis used in conjunction with charge density maps reveals that the resulting bond mainly arises from an electrostatic polarisation of the cluster by the substrate. When adsorbed on a surface F-centre defect. Au20 binds to the oxide surface with a significantly enhanced strength. The analysis of the resulting interaction indicates that, in addition to being polarised, Au20 is charged by the defective surface. Based upon the results of the present investigation, different reaction mechanisms for the oxidation of CO by Au20 supported on MgO are proposed.

This work concerns the modeling, at the molecular level, of the interaction between carbonaceous particles of nanometric size and the electromagnetic radiation. The goal is to improve our understanding of the optical properties of soot particles, to better quantify the influence of soot on the atmosphere and on climate change. The study of the interaction between radiation and fresh soot particles was carried out using the point dipole interaction method; it has been shown that: i) the mass absorption coefficient (MAC) of these soot nanoparticles may significantly depend on their atomistic details, especially between 200 and 350 nm; ii) the MAC depends on whether the heart of the carbonaceous particle is occupied or not by graphite planes; iii) an analytical model is not suitable for calculating the MAC of carbonaceous nanoparticles having structural defects. In addition, quantum chemical methods have been used to characterize the ageing of soot. The results obtained are i) NO, Cl, and HCl are physisorbed on a perfect carbonaceous surface whereas on a defective surface, these species are chemisorbed and lead to a modification of the surface; ii) on a carbonaceous surface, the presence of adsorbed Cl atoms leads to a strong trapping of the surrounding water molecules. This may be related to the highly hydrophilic nature of soot emitted during fires in…

In this thesis, we study classes of weighted composition operators on several functional spaces in the background of the invariant subspace problem. This important open problem asks the question of the existence for every operator, defined on a complex and separable infinite dimensional Hilbert space, of a non trivial closed subspace invariant under the operator. The first part is dedicated to the establishment of the spectrum and the characterization of cyclic vectors of a special weighted composition operator defined on L2([0,1]d) : the Bishop type operator, introduced as possible counter-example of the invariant subspace problem. The second, third and fourth part approach the problem from the point of view of universal operators. More precisely, universal operators have the universal property in the sense of the complete description of all the invariant subspaces of a universal operator could solve the invariant subspace problem. A sufficient condition for an operator to be universal (Caradus’theorem) is given in terms of spectral properties. To this aim, we establish ad-hoc spectral properties of a class of weighted composition operators on L2([0,1]) and Sobolev spaces of order n, of composition operator in the Hardy space of the unit disc and of the upper half-plane, which lead us to deduce universality results. We also obtain a…

▼ In this dissertation, we explore the use of three different analytical techniques for approximating the finite-sample
properties of estimators and test statistics. These techniques are the saddlepoint
approximation, the large-n
approximation and the small-disturbance
approximation. The first of these enables us to approximate the complete density or distribution function for a statistic of interest, while the other two approximations provide analytical results for the first few moments of the finite-sample distribution. We consider a range of interesting estimation and testing problems that arise in econometrics and empirical economics. Saddlepoint approximations are used to determine the distribution of the half-life estimator that arises in the empirical purchasing power parity literature, and to show that its moments are undefined. They are also applied to the problem of obtaining accurate critical points for the Anderson-Darling goodness-of-fit test. The large-n
approximation is used to study the first two moments of the MLE in the binary Logit model. Finally, we use small-disturbance approximations to examine the bias and mean squared error of some commonly used price index numbers, when the latter are viewed as point estimators.

▼ Transport radiative properties of ceria ceramics as a function of wavelength and
morphology are presented. Experimental facilities for measuring transmitted and re-
flected radiant energy were developed. A Monte Carlo ray-tracing technique was devel-
oped to infer transport scattering coefficient and absorption coefficient from measured
transmittance and reflectance. An experimental setup to measure normal-emittance of
materials employed in solar thermochemical applications is also designed. This experi-
mental setup can achieve temperatures on the order of 1500 K and facilitate maintaining
an inert, oxidizing or reducing environment to control composition of materials.
Transmittance and reflectance of two types of morphologies were examined. Sin-
tered ceria discs with pores and grains of size a few microns and a random grain
and pore structure, and a three-dimensionally ordered macro-porous (3DOM) ceria
with nano-structured features were considered. The 3DOM samples were also ther-
mochemically cycled for 60 cycles consisting of high-temperature reduction and low-
temperature oxidation. Two porosities were considered for the sintered ceria discs with
porosity, p = 0.08 (“dense” samples), and p = 0.72 (“porous” samples) and porosi-
ties of the packed bed before and after themochemical cycling were 0.9 and 0.83 re-spectively. Morphological characterization was performed by Scanning Electron Mi-
croscopy (SEM), and porosity was verified by mass and volume measurements of the
samples.
Sintered ceria discs had extremely high optical thickness, with low and uncertain
values of directional-hemispherical transmittance, and bi-normal transmittance on the
order of 0.001 %. The transport radiative properties did not show a strong wavelength
dependence after a wavelength of 0.5 μm. The transport scattering coefficient was on the order of 30mm−1 for the porous ceramics and 15mm−1 for the dense ceramics after
a wavelength of 0.5 μm. The absorption coefficient was on the order of 0.005 mm−1
for the dense ceramics and 0.03 mm−1 for the porous ceramics in the spectral range of
weak absorption. Experimental uncertainty resulted in only approximate determination
of transport radiative properties, particularly for the dense ceramics.
For the 3DOM packed bed, measured transmittance was of higher accuracy lead-
ing to lower uncertainty in measurements and identification procedure. The transport
scattering coefficient showed a stronger spectral dependence than that of the sintered
ceramics especially after a wavelength of 0.5 μm. Thermochemical cycling resulted
in changes in the 3DOM morphology due to sintering of walls of the 3DOM struc-
ture. The morphology of 3DOM ceria after thermochemical cycling resembled sintered structures and this change also impacted the predicted radiative properties. The trans-
port scattering coefficient showed strong dependence on morphology, with a drastic
increase by a factor of four for 3DOM packed bed after thermochemical cycling. The
absorption coefficient was only…

▼ Thermoelectric effects were discovered in the early 19th century. Seebeck (1821) discovered that a voltage appears when two different conductors are joined together and the junction is heated. The Peltier effect (1834) occurs when an electric current is passed through the junction between two conductors. The junction becomes heated or cooled according to the direction of current through it. These two effects combined constitute the thermoelectric phenomenon.
Thermoelectric effect can have practical applications in the fields of alternate power generation (Seebeck effect) or as environment friendly refrigeration and cooling devices in modern electronics (Peltier effect). However, their performance would depend on the specific properties of the materials that are used to build those devices. A good thermoelectric material should have a high electrical conductivity like a metal, and low thermal conductivity, like a glass. One promising class of materials that fit the requirements for good thermolectrics is the semiconductor clathrates. Among the two major types of clathrate compounds, the type II clathrates has been relatively less investigated compared to the type I variety. The type II clathrates form a cage-like structure with 136 atoms in the cubic unit cell. The cages can accommodate weakly bound impurities or guests, usually Group I or Group II atoms. This unique structural characteristic lead to important electronic and vibrational properties which makes these materials potentially useful for various applications including thermoelectrics.
This work is based on a theoretical study of the type II silicon (Si) and germanium (Ge) clathrates. It involves a systematic study of the structural, electronic and vibrational properties of several materials.
The guest impurity atoms inside the clathrate cages modify the material electronic structure. Guest atom electrons occupy the host conduction band states, resulting in a Fermi Level shift into the conduction band of the parent framework, therefore making the materials metallic. This metallic character means that the electronic contribution to the total thermal conductivity could be large and hence such materials are not very useful as thermoelectrics. However, upon substitution of a few framework atoms by gallium (Ga) restores the semiconducting behavior of the partially filled materials. It indicates that the Ga atoms, with their s2p1 valence electronic configuration, accept electrons from the guest atoms and form covalent bonds with the neighboring Si atoms.
The projected electronic density of the filled clathrates show the impurity derived s-orbital character of the states near the Fermi level. This feature may help to qualitatively explain the temperature-dependent Knight shift observed for the NMR-active nuclei in the filled clathrates.
All the filled clathrates are predicted to have low frequency guest vibrational modes that are near the middle of the host acoustic band, which effectively compresses the acoustic mode band width. This…

▼ This dissertation is a theoretical treatment of the electric field dependence of optical
properties such as Quantum Confined Stark (QCS) shifts, Photoluminescence Quenching (PLQ), and Excitonic Mixing in quantum well heterostructures. The reduced spatial dimensionality in heterostructures greatly enhances these optical
properties, more than in three dimensional semiconductors. Charge presence in the quantum well from doping causes the potential to bend and deviate from the ideal square well potential. A potential bending that varies as the square of distance measured from the heterostructure interfaces is derived self-consistently. This potential is used to solve the time-independent Schrodinger equation for bound state energies and wave functions within the framework of the Wentzel, Kramers, and Brillouin (WKB)
approximation.
The theoretical results obtained from the WKB
approximation are limited to wide gap semiconductors with large split off bands such as gallium arsenide-gallium aluminum arsenide and indium gallium arsenide—indium phosphide. Quantum wells with finite confinement heights give rise to an energy dependent WKB phase. External electric and magnetic fields are incorporated into the theory for two different geometries. For electric fields applied perpendicular to the heterostructure multilayers, QCS shifts and PLQ are found to be in excellent agreement with the WKB calculations. Orthogonality between electrons and holes gives rise to interband mixing in the presence of an external electric field. On the contrary, intraband mixing between light and heavy holes is not sufficiently accounted for in the WKB
approximation.

▼ Ab initio density functional theory (DFT) based on the optimized effective potential (OEP) method is a new approach to study the electronic structure of atomic, molecular and^M solid state systems. It contains elements of both wave function and density functional theories and is free from limitations of conventional DFT because of using orbital-dependent functionals derived from systematic approximations of the wave function theory. Ab initio DFT methods with exchange-correlation functionals based on many-body perturbation theory (MBPT) have been derived and implemented recently. The exchange-correlation potentials derived from MBPT have a complicated structure and their derivation in higher-order of MBPT by the use of the chain-rule for functional differentiation requires significant effort. To facilitate such derivations, I developed a special diagrammatic formalism for taking functional derivatives. An alternative way to construct OEP MBPT exchange-correlation potentials is to use the density condition. It makes it possible to obtain potentials for different partitionings of the full molecular Hamiltonian with MBPT. Using the diagrammatic formalism developed for taking functional derivatives, we show an order-by-order equivalence between the functional derivative and the density condition approaches to OEP MBPT for the case of the Kohn-Sham partitioning of the molecular Hamiltonian. For any other partitionings, different exchange-correlation potentials are produced by the functional derivative and density condition approaches. The time-dependent extension of OEP in the adiabatic
approximation with exchange-only potentials and kernels was recently implemented and applied to some molecular systems. The corresponding excitation energies and polarizabilities are in good agreement with time-dependent Hartree-Fock results. However, such results cannot be used for comparison with experimental values due to lack of a description of electron correlation effects. In order to account for correlation effects, a correlation kernel corresponding to the MBPT(2) potentials has been derived. Its structure and
properties are described in detail. The first numerical results for excitation energies with pure ab initio potentials and kernels are presented. The recently implemented OEP MBPT(2) method has been extended to the case of spin-polarized open-shell systems. The total energies obtained for several open-shell systems are very close to the corresponding values obtained with the highly-correlated coupled cluster singles and doubles with perturbative triples (CCSD(T)) method. Comparison with results obtained with the OEP MBPT(2) exchange-correlation potentials and some density functionals has shown a qualitatively incorrect shape for some widely used exchange-correlation potentials. Higher-order response
properties, such as hyperpolarizabilities, are described very poorly with conventional functionals. The typical relative errors described in the literature are about 100 percent. The reason for the poor description is an incorrect…

▼ A novel technique for measuring gas temperature and spectral particle emissivity in high-temperature gas-particle streams is presented. The main application of this optical sensor is to improve the process control of batch unit operations, such as steelmaking furnaces. The spectral emission profile of CO and CO2 and the continuous particle emission in the 3.5 to 5 μm wavelength region was recorded and analyzed in real time with a low-resolution passive sensor. The sensor consisted of light collecting optics, a dispersion element (grating spectrometer) and a 64-pixel pyroelectric array. Wavelength and radiance calibrations were performed. The temperature of the gas-particle medium (Tg+p) followed from the least-squares minimization of the difference between the measured radiance in the 4.56-4.7 μm region –which saturates due to the large CO2 concentrations and path lengths in industrial furnaces– and the corresponding blackbody radiance. Particle emissivity (εp) was calculated at 3.95 μm from an asymptotic approximation of the Radiative Transfer Equation that yields the emerging radiance from a semi-infinite particle cloud. The major source of error in the magnitude of Tg+p and εp could come from particle scattering. Through the method of embedded invariance an expression was developed to estimate the lowering effect of particle size and volume fraction on the saturation of the 4.56-4.7 μm CO2 emission region. An iterative procedure for correcting the values of the gas-particle temperature and particle emissivity was applied to the datasets from the two industrial tests. Results from the measurement campaigns with the infrared sensor prototype at two full-scale furnaces are presented. A proof-of-concept test at a coal-fired boiler for electricity production was followed by more extensive measurements at a Basic Oxygen Furnace (BOF) for steelmaking. The second test provided temperature and particle emissivity profiles for eight heats, which highlighted the simplicity of the technique in obtaining in-situ measurements for modeling studies. Through the analysis of the particle emissivity profile in the BOF and the definition of a new variable –the minimum carbon time– a novel end-point strategy to stop the injection of high-purity oxygen during low-carbon heats in BOF converters was proposed.

▼ In the present thesis we study the structural, electronic, thermodynamic and magnetic properties of clusters using the tight binding molecular dynamics method. Our study has to do: (a) with the structural properties and energetics of C fullerene isomers and the rehybridization of their atomic orbital, (b) with the same properties of Si fullerenes, (c) with the thermodynamic and magnetic properties of small Ni clusters and (d) with the thermodynamic and magnetic properties of larger Ni clusters. Our basic conclusions are the following: (a) There is a certain relation between cohesive energy of C fullerene isomers, their pentagon adjacencies and their atoms, (b) Si fullerenes isomers are almost isoenergetic, bolt of their atoms are almost coplanar to their first neighbours and the other half form sharp edges, (c) the melting temperatures of small Ni clusters were found, (d) there is a linear relation between melting and Curie temperature.
▼ [EN] Phononic crystals are artificial materials formed by a periodic arrangement of inclusions embedded into a host medium, where each of them can be solid or fluid. By controlling the geometry and the impedance contrast of its constituent materials, one can control the dispersive
properties of waves, giving rise to a huge variety of interesting and fundamental phenomena in the context of wave propagation. When a propagating wave encounters a medium with different physical
properties it can be transmitted and reflected in lossless media, but also absorbed if dissipation is taken into account. These fundamental phenomena have been classically explained in the context of homogeneous
media, but it has been a
subject of increasing interest in the context of periodic structures in recent years as well. This thesis is devoted to the study of different effects found in sonic and phononic crystals associated with transmission, reflection and absorption of waves, as well as the development of a technique for the characterization of its dispersive
properties, described by the band structure.
We start discussing the control of wave propagation in transmission in conservative systems. Specifically, our interest is to show how sonic crystals can modify the spatial dispersion of propagating waves leading to control the diffractive broadening of sound beams. Making use of the spatial dispersion curves extracted from the analysis of the band structure, we first predict zero and negative diffraction of waves at frequencies close to the band-edge, resulting in collimation and focusing of sound beams in and behind a 3D sonic crystal, and later demonstrate it through experimental measurements. The focusing efficiency of a 3D sonic crystal is limited due to the strong scattering inside the crystal, characteristic of the diffraction regime. To overcome this limitation we consider axisymmetric structures working in the long wavelength regime, as a gradient index lens. In this regime, the scattering is strongly reduced and, in an axisymmetric configuration, the symmetry matching with acoustic sources radiating sound beams increase its efficiency dramatically. Moreover, the homogenization theory can be used to model the structure as an effective medium with effective physical
properties, allowing the study of the wave front profile in terms of refraction. We will show the model, design and characterization of an efficient focusing device based on these concepts.
Consider now a periodic structure in which one of the parameters of the lattice, such as the lattice constant or the filling fraction, gradually changes along the propagation direction. Chirped crystals represent this concept and are used here to demonstrate a novel mechanism of sound wave enhancement based on a phenomenon known as "soft" reflection. The enhancement is related to a progressive slowing down of the wave as it propagates along the material, which is associated with the group velocity of the local dispersion relation at the planes of the crystal. A model based on the…
