The purpose of this thesis is to study definitions in the oral contexts and to establish the viability and convenience of an approach that considers systems of definitions at work (systemic structures), instead of definitions as isolated phenomena in discourse. After discuss some implications of several approaches for definitions theory, we present a definitions typology, which fits with that particular context. Once we have presented a scheme that distinguishes between definition operations in empirical level and definition operations in mental level, we develop the concepts of stricto sensu definition structure [ëstrutura (pró-)definidora\"] and lato sensu definition structure [\"contextura (pró-)definidora\"]. Finally, we examine a kind of definition, which responds at the same time to pragmatic aspects of verbal interactions and to the ontological flexibility of certain definition objects.

The present dissertation aims to study the metaphors in a journalistic corpus in economics. This research was based on the cognitive metaphor theory. The terms were collected in the Base de Termos da Economia (Projeto Observatório de Neologismos Científicos do Português Contemporâneo). The methodology used in the analysis of the terms allowed us make a systematic investigation on the concepts in this kind of terminology, which resulted in a \"cognitive mapöf the metaphors of the discipline. This \"cognitive mapälso provided conditions to verify the role of metaphor in economics. In order to reach these results, we selected the polysemous units of Base de Termos da Economia to verify the concepts of these terms. After this process, we agrouped the conceptual metaphors (metaphoric fields) to make an analysis of these units, which revealed that metaphor in economics serves a didactic purpose, to make the terms easily understandable for a wide audience through analogical thinking process.

▼ Speaking a language is the necessary condition of an individual that belongs to a society, of a certain nation. This subject concerns the autonomy of the people, in their identity and self-determination, as well as to the establishment and the maintenance of social relationships. Taking that into account, this study will analyze two journalistic speeches of different spaces (Brazil and Portugal) in written media, considering the same theme (education). The study was made under the perspective of the analysis of the speech (AD), of French orientation, to establish the similarities and the existent differences of these speeches in the journalistic discursive modality, turning possible, therefore, to think about the scenography built in the speech and increasing the construction of the speech of the linguistic marks of the discursive formation and of the ideological formation.

▼ The Constitution of Zambia, which is the supreme law of the Land, does recognize and guarantee the freedom of expression under Article 20. The constitution, under Article 20(i) provides that:-"Except with his own consent, no person shall be hindered on the enjoyment of his freedom of expression, that is to say, freedom to hold opinions without interference, freedom to impart and communicate ideas and information without interference, whether the communication be to the public generally or to any person or class of persons, and freedom from interference with his correspondence. "The preamble to the Zambian Constitution declares that Zambia will 'uphold the values of democracy, transparency, accountability and good governance.' Transparency, accountability and good governance are only possible where there is freedom of expression and the right of the public to know is assured. Freedom of expression includes not only freedom to hold opinions without interference, but also freedom to receive ideas and information, and to impart and communicate ideas and information without interference. "Freedom of expression is the life-blood of a democracy." It has been observed that "democratization is closely tied to freedom of expression, together with that of assembly and association."The value of free expression is that it assures the individual of self-fulfillment and it also serves as a means of attaining the truth. Free speech in addition, creates a method of security for the participation of the members of a society in political and social decision
making and it further serves as a means of maintaining the balance between stability and change in a society. In a democratic society, such as Zambia, what is at stake is the fundamental principle of the people's right to know. Since development is tied to good governance, which includes the freedom of expression, government has a duty to ensure that this freedom is guaranteed. This study shall consist of four chapters. The first chapter will outlines what the freedom of expression is, its sources and its nature. The second chapter will look at the development of the freedom of expression in Zambia, hi the third chapter, a comparison will be drawn between laws that derogate or restrict the freedom of expression and those that enhance the exercise of this freedom. A general conclusion on whether there are enough laws in Zambia to secure and facilitate the exercise of the freedom of expression will make the fourth and final chapter of this work and recommendations will be made in the same chapter.

▼ As the boom in the older adult population continues to
grow, so too grows the number of persons suffering from cognitive
diseases, such as dementia of the Alzheimer’s type (DAT). Older
Latinos diagnosed with the disease make up 4 percent (200,000) of
the current population; however, little research on bilinguals with
DAT has been carried out (Gollan, et al. 2010, 2011; Bialystok,
2007), and even less on the presentation of self as mediated
through narrative production. Current literature in the area has
found that even though there is an internal (neuropathological and
neuropsychological) decline that affects those diagnosed with DAT,
individuals with DAT continue to display an external or social
self. That is, individuals with DAT demonstrate a sense of
personhood, or the “standing or status that is bestowed upon one
human being by others, in the context of relationship and social
being” (Kitwood, 1997, p. 7). As my work is situated in the
discursive perspective of selfhood, the current study sought to
answer questions regarding the presentation of self as mediated
through narrative production in three cognitively healthy and three
cognitively impaired older bilingual Latinos. While using a
tri-partite framework from which to analyze bilingual data in
studies of linguistic nature—including repeated tellings, reported
speech, and speaker roles—I analyzed in both of the speakers’
languages (1) the content of the participants’ twice-told
narratives, (2) the enactment of self and others, and (3) the
shifts in speaker roles. The findings demonstrated that
participants with DAT continued to display their sense of self in
first and second tellings, making a variety of lexical choices to
index the self and their subjectivity. Retellings, however, were
more favorable for the participants with DAT as twice-told stories
seemed to enhance these speakers’ overall access to memory,
language, and narrative ability. The findings present evidence that
the notion of the sense of self is grounded in discursive and
interactional contexts, can be publicly manifested via narratives
of personal experience, and is enhanced through the act of
narrative retellings.

▼ The sexual behavior of adolescents has been a frequent concern of the families and schools. The large number of early pregnancy intrigue specialists, as one never spoke both in prevention as nowadays, and even then, the number of pregnant teenagers is increasing. The objective of this study is to contribute to research in the field of education, with regard to cross-cutting themes of the NCP, specifically in relation to the prevention of early pregnancy. Search will reflect on the thinking of adolescent girls, what they think about dating and sex; as the speeches of the schools, friends and the medias influence on their decisions. To do this, students were asked to eighth set of elementary school and first year of high school which show through the writing of the diary, gender familiar to girls and their interest. It was considered a corpus consists of those listed, supporting up by the analysis of the speech line by the French and Psychoanalysis. The hypothesis is that, despite the information, the occurrence of early pregnancy were due to the fact that adolescents are heavily marked by socio-historical moment that encourages behavior post-modern immediate satisfaction of desires. Preliminary results show that the teenagers know about methods to prevent and treat showed up, and subject of desire, enjoyment of the subject: that is not subject interdicting, not prevent and go beyond the principle of pleasure. Many girls see as a natural early sexual initiation, which are reporting questioned by sexual liberation, probably spread by the media. The girls have imagined that the first time a girl should be special, quiet, with conscience and with whom it is like, that is, show a romanticism inspired by movies or stories of love that is not always true. It was observed that there is a great possibility that the discourses on sexual orientation are not passed on the subject that it is, now post-modern, as subject of desire and enjoyment of the subject. The girls appear to be internalising these words, a situation that encourages sexual initiation, they are vulnerable, among others, to early pregnancy. Beyond the initial hypothesis, the analysis allowed the revelation of two categories are subject postmodern: subject of desire, and knows that metaforiza postpone; subject of enjoyment which offers a subject pulse of enjoyment of others and ignores the risks that can lead in the death of the subject psychic.

▼ This paper builds on initial evidence of First
Language influence on brass playing presented in
Heyne and Derrick (2013) [13] by indicating how
tongue positioning might affect trombone timbre.
Ultrasound imaging of the tongue was used to
compare vowel production and sustained trombone
notes for three participants, one each of New
Zealand English, Tongan and Japanese, whose
musical production was also analyzed acoustically.
Comparison of the sound spectra produced by
two semiprofessional players shows that the player
using a higher, more retracted tongue position
displays a larger component of high frequencies in
the produced sound spectrum. We believe that this
could explain why brass players can notice
differences between players from different language
backgrounds.

▼ Communication between countries is an essential part of
international relations. Leaders use the media to build confidence,
advance negotiations or garner political support. This process is
identified as media diplomacy. Television is an important part of
international relations, and some have even gone so far to say that
ambassadors between countries serve nothing more than a social
function. In this
analysis it is argued that current strategies of
media diplomacy do lead to violence because they encourage power
plays, violence, and overemphasis on national ego. The proposed
alternative is to embrace a Buddhist alternative identified as
Right
Speech to overcome current deficiencies. The study found that
President Bush’s 2002 State of the Union violated the tenets of
Right
Speech. The implications of violations including the
increased likelihood of violence between nation states will be
discussed.

The Effect of the Slope of the Psychometric Function on the Measurement of Speech Recognition Threshold Using a Male Talker.

▼ Speech audiometry is the aspect of audiology that provides critical information on how individuals hear one of the most important sounds of daily life: speech. The speech recognition threshold (SRT) is a measure of speech audiometry that is widely used to provide information on an individual's capacity to hear speech. Over time, researchers and clinicians have worked to improve the SRT by developing and modifying a variety of word lists to be used during testing. Eventually, spondaic words were selected as the best stimuli for the SRT. The spondaic words had to meet four criteria: familiarity, phonetic dissimilarity, normal sampling of English sounds, and homogeneity with respect to audibility. This study examined the aspect of homogeneity with regard to slope of the psychometric function. Specifically, whether slope of the psychometric function had an effect on the number of words used to obtain the SRT, and thus reduce test time, as well as whether slope had an effect on the relationship between the SRT and the pure-tone average (PTA). It was hypothesized that words with a steep slope would significantly reduce test time and yield a close SRT-PTA agreement. Three word lists (steep, medium, and shallow sloping words), all recorded by a male talker, were used to obtain the SRT on 40 participants (ages 18-30 years). Statistical analysis showed significant differences in the number of words to obtain the SRT and the SRT-PTA agreement. However, when the differences were examined from a clinical perspective, the results were negligible. When compared with words with medium and steep slopes, words with shallow slope required an average of four extra words to obtain the SRT, which does not result in a meaningful reduction in test time. For clinical purposes, it appears that the slope of the psychometric function does not need to be taken into consideration for the SRT. Clinicians may use a variety of words as long as they meet the original four criteria for selection of spondees.

▼ This research results of the confluence of two fields of interest the fear, experienced
by the professors, of the violence motivated by the trafic of drugs in public schools in
the suburbs of Maceió and the way this interferes with the pedagogical process. The
purpose of this study of qualitative approach was to understand the reasons of the
school being quiet as to this violence, and if puts in a quandary between denunciation
and not denunciation. Regarding this, it was made used of interviews carried through
with three professors of State and Municipal schools in Maceió, as well as collections
in Alagoas State periodicals of deposition of professors (also in public schools)
victimized by the violence. From this point on, one searched to identify the conditions
of production of the
speech of these professors, and also to debate the relation among
the influences of the context interacting with these specific individuals inside the school
and the quietness about the violence of the drugs through a psychoanalytical
perspective. It was taken as a theoretical reference for the
Analysis of the
Speech, the
prepositions of Michel Pêcheux, theoretical perspective that proposes an arrangement
among Linguistic, Psychoanalysis and Marxism. From the first, it was taken the
language; from the second, it was taken the concept of unconscious, the imperfection
idea that places the possibility of displacement of directions and of transformations and
of new interpretations; from the third it was taken the idea that history is moved by the
fight of social groups. Still as a theoretical reference, La Taille was appealed in order to
understand the relation between violence and ethics; and to Freud and Lacan as a
psychoanalytical support for understanding the interpersonal relations of the involved
actors in school-community space and of the quietness as to the violence of the drugs by
watching the variables between denouncing or not denouncing this violence and also of
the perversion relations that involves these relations. The results had allowed the
understanding of professor social place. When speaking about violence, the professor
criticizes and denies violence as a strategy of defense of his own life, because he knows
that drug dealing and delinquency allow perverse structural formations of power
relations opening doors to barbarous pacts between the drug dealing and the State, more
inclined to domain territories and groups by the use of rude force. The
analysis allowed
to conclude that exists a relation of perception that is stronger and that representations
that move along and for a long time have more power than the legal current
speech
unfitted to transform the practice. Even if the legal
speech defines the procedure, in case
of the violence of drugs denounced by the professor, the absence of the State regarding
security and the increase of power of the drug dealer end by silencing the professor.
This happens because what one demands of the school to recognize and to denounce
is an impossible of being performed role: the…

The main aim of the present research is, surpassing the old quarrel between the supporters of the classical theory of speech acts (J. R. Searle and D. Vanderveken) and those of the analysts of interaction/discourse (mainly « The Geneva School»)), both to study the functioning of speech acts in interaction and to show that these two, apparently divergent positions, may function together. Actually, we propose a concept of speech act in the line of Searle’s theory, adding, however, a contextualist perspective (according to the model proposed by A. Trognon and Ch. Brassac), which is likely to account for the functioning of the act in the discursive dynamics. The main aim of this endeavour is to provide new data for the description of these units. The second aim of this thesis is to treat these units comparatively, in two languages –French and Romanian-, such as they are used by native speakers. The corpus consists of class interactions, which were recorded in the two above-mentioned education systems and then, transcribed. The analysis of the functioning and of the…

▼ This paper is a political and constitutional interpretation of autonomy as a value that justifies the American adversary system and freedom of speech. Traditionally, autonomy has been understood in terms of pursuing an individual?s self-interest by denying the government?s paternalistic intervention from the perspective of anti-perfectionist liberalism. In the arena of free speech, autonomy has been the prevalent justification, by theorists, for the protection of individual speech with minimum governmental interference so as to increase an individual?s self-fulfillment. However, collectivist approaches lay a persuasive foundation for governmental intervention in speech in order to reinforce people?s autonomous deliberation through the democratic decision making process by restraining the side-effects of large media?s monopolization of deliberation. This justified paternalism does not harm autonomy, which is the foremost concern of individualist theorists of free speech.
Thomas Scanlon?s idea of listener?s interest can provide a useful theoretical foundation for a theory about the mutually supportive relationship between autonomy and paternalism in the arena of freedom of speech. In addition, Joseph Raz?s perfectionist liberalism and autonomy theory lays jurisprudential foundation for the claim that the government can legitimately retain the power to paternalistically control heteronymous activities in order to guarantee the plurality of options for autonomous decision.
This newly positioned relationship between autonomy and paternalism in free speech theory can be applied to the adversary system according to the reflective and analogous relationship between freedom of speech and the adversary system. They pursue the same value, autonomy, as their functional purpose. Because paternalistic interventions into autonomy can be accepted to some extent in the perfectionist liberalism of free speech, the value of autonomy in the adversary system can be interpreted differently from the common understanding of individualistic liberalism, which is also called the Dominant View in the field of legal ethics. The Dominant View justifies lawyers? amorality using as its excuse the liberal ideal of the adversary system: maximizing interests of the client. With autonomy and paternalism in an inter-dependent relationship, which is set up in perfectionist liberalism, this Dominant View can be reasonably criticized.

▼ Fiscal deficit gives the signal to the government about the total borrowing requirements from all sources. The primary component of fiscal deficit includes revenue deficit and capital expenditure. Budget deficits are generated when governments spend more money than they take in from taxes and other sources of revenue. This study sought to establish the determinants of fiscal deficit in Kenya. The study was guided by one objective which was to analyze the determinants of fiscal deficits in Kenya.
The study used a case of the Kenya Government budget, covering a period of 9 years from the financial year 2002/2003 to 2010/2011. Secondary data was collected from the Ministry of Finance and Kenya National Bureau of statistics. Panel data methodology was used in the analysis since cross-sectional and time series were combined. The data collected was analyzed using regression analysis.
From the findings 84.3% of fiscal deficits in Kenya was attributed to combination of the nine independent factors (expenditure, income, domestic borrowing, external borrowing, money supply, previous year’s consumption, civil servant salaries, inflation rate, and corporations receipts) investigated in this study.
Fiscal deficit is not dependent on any variable amounted to 1.143 Million. The data findings analyzed also shows that taking all other independent variables at zero, a unit increase in government expenditure will lead to a 0.635 increase in fiscal deficit. A unit increase in income will lead to a 0.235 increase in fiscal deficit; a unit increase in domestic borrowing will lead to a 0.451 increase in fiscal deficit; a unit increase in external borrowing will lead to a 0.825 increase in fiscal deficit. A unit increase in money supply will lead to a 0.354 increase in fiscal deficit; a unit increase in previous year consumption will lead to a 0.118 increase in fiscal deficit; a unit increase in civil servants salaries will lead to a 0.394 increase in fiscal deficit, a unit increase in inflation rate will lead to a 0.794 increase in fiscal deficit; and a unit increase in corporate receipts will lead to a 0.198 increase in fiscal deficit. This infers that external borrowing contribute more to
v
the fiscal deficit followed by inflation rate and least by previous year consumption and corporate receipts.

▼ The major goal of supervisors in the area of Speech Pathology is to help student clinicians improve efficiency and effectiveness in attaining a therapeutic goal. This study was designed to provide systemic feedback of recorded data to student clinicians to determine the effect of a particular supervisory instrument on the future performance of inexperienced clinicians. The subjects for this study were six beginning student clinicians in Speech Pathology at Portland State University, two of which were randomly selected to represent the control group.
All of the clinicians were observed for a randomly selected consecutive five-minute period from each of six management sessions. During these observations a content analysis was made of the interactions between the clinicians and their clients. The Analysis of Behavior of the Clinician (ABC) System, developed by Schubert and Miner (1971) was used to record interactions on a three-second interval schedule. The observation sessions for the control group coincided in time with the experimental group’s observation sessions, though no feedback was given to the control clinicians and they were unaware that tracking was done.

The need to identify and register the varieties of the Portuguese Language, particularly its Brazilian type, has made researchers to devote themselves to the lexical collection of these varieties in different regions of the country. The goal of the present paper is to highlight -from the oral speech of Brazilian/informants - the existing varieties of the Portuguese Language, as well as point out the phonological, phonetic, morphological, syntactic, semantic and lexical aspects that characterize that Brazilian Portuguese variety. The innumerous Linguistic Atlases that have been put out after the \"Atlas Prévio dos Falares Baianosp̈ublished by Nelson Rossi in 1963 attest to the need of such identification of the Brazilian Portuguese varieties. Moreover, the work that has been developed by Brazilian linguistics to publish the first Linguistic Atlas of Brazil with dialectical samples from the five Brazilian regions is a similar effort that attests to this need. The present work has its relevance in that it has gathered a corpus of the oral speech of the villagers of the \"Distrito da Guiaïn Mato Grosso, Brazil. To do so, many steps have been taken: the analysis of the lexias verbalized by the elderly informants compared with their counter-parts (the younger informants) leading to elements in the corpus that would show the maintenance, variation or the lexical-semantic change of the lexias studied.

▼ In 1972, Branzburg v. Hayes required the Supreme Court to consider whether the First Amendment to the United States Constitution conferred on journalists a right to quash grand jury subpoenas issued by the government. The Court held in a five-to-four opinion that it did not. Yet, in 2011, a federal district judge found that James Risen, a New York Times reporter, had a First Amendment reporter’s privilege that protected him from having to reveal his source for a book chapter about a secretive CIA operation. This judge is not alone in finding such a privilege in spite of Branzburg; indeed, many judges have come to the same conclusion. This thesis, through an analysis of post-Branzburg cases at the federal courts of appeals level, attempts to map the current landscape. It finds that Branzburg jurisprudence is in tatters, with some courts of appeals finding a reporter’s privilege and others not. It further finds that the courts that do find a privilege fail to weigh the First Amendment interests in each case, opting instead for sweeping but vacuous pronouncements of the benefits of the First Amendment. Taking this landscape under consideration, this thesis suggests that Branzburg is the problem – not the solution and offers a way for courts to escape from under Branzburg’s thumb by recognizing that subsequent case law has implicitly dismissed the presumption on which Branzburg is based. It further extrapolates from this subsequent case law the principle that the First Amendment is implicated when the government or a private party acts adversely to a speaker because of his speech. Having recognized that the First Amendment is implicated by subpoenas against journalists, it then argues that the only way to account for all of the interests involved is to identify and appraise the value of the First Amendment interests in light of First Amendment theory and weigh those interests against the countervailing interests. Finally, it suggests how this approach informs the Risen case.

▼ The controversial singing of the Shoot the Boer song by Julius Malema was a focus of media attention during the period of March 3, 2010 to September 12, 2011.This study aims to analyse the discourses participants draw on in the expression of their positions of race and identity in selected online texts, as well as the different meanings and interpretations the Shoot the Boer song has acquired over time. Using the data drawn from three court rulings, namely the South Gauteng High Court, North Gauteng High Court and the Equality Court and commentaries from various online websites, this project focuses on the various ways in which issues of race are realised through language by focusing on the construction and interpretation of Julius Malema and the Shoot the Boer song within different contextual spaces. This study uses a critical discourse
analysis framework, as well as theories of intertextuality, resemiotization, contextand chronotope to analyse the texts which were generated in response to the song. Key findings include the ways in which participants who consider themselves as part of a minority group, construct themselves as 'victims‘ in relation to Malema and the singing of the song. Similarly, another key finding is that the broader discourse of fear exhibited in the various commentaries links to a general fear of 'black power‘ where Malema is a signifier of this 'black power.‘ Overall, the thesis argues that the meanings of the song are multiple and shift with the changing chronotopia of its performance. It therefore support Blommaert‘s (2005) emphasis on the importance of 'text trajectories‘ in establishing the meaning of texts, and argues that the historical meanings associated with the Shoot the Boer song form a complex set of frames on which different participants draw when interpreting the song in 2010.

▼ With the advance of mobile devices, the ways people use Internet have changed enormously. Mobile devices are capable of recording usersâ behavior, such as locations visited, frequent online shopping stores, browsing history, and so on. The aim of this study is to utilize usersâ browsing data on mobile devices and subsequently applying text mining techniques to recommend hotels to users.
Specifically, we design and implement an APP that allows its user to browse hotel reviews and records every gesture the user has performed. We then identified a subset of hotel reviews that the given user have shown interests depending on the different kinds of gestures he/she has performed. Text mining techniques are subsequently applied to construct the interest profile of the user based on the review content.
We collect 10,690 reviews of 360 hotels in Taiwan. 18 users are recruited to use our proposed APP and participate in the experiment. Experimental result demonstrates that our system have better performance than other approaches.

▼ Speech segmentation is the process of identifying the boundaries between words, syllables or phones in the recorded waveforms of spoken natural languages. The lowest level of
speech segmentation is the breakup and classification of the sound signal into a string of phones. The difficulty of this problem is compounded by the phenomenon of co-articulation of
speech sounds.
The classical solution to this problem is to manually label and segment spectrograms. In the first step of this two step process, a trained person listens to a
speech signal, recognizes the word and phone sequence, and roughly determines the position of each phonetic boundary. The second step involves examining several features of the
speech signal to place a boundary mark at the point where these features best satisfy a certain set of conditions specific for that kind of phonetic boundary. Manual segmentation of
speech into phones is a highly time-consuming and painstaking process. Required for a variety of applications, such as acoustic
analysis, or building
speech synthesis databases for high-quality
speech output systems, the time required to carry out this process for even relatively small
speech databases can rapidly accumulate to prohibitive levels. This calls for automating the segmentation process.
The state-of-art segmentation techniques use Hidden Markov Models (HMM) for phone states. They give an average accuracy of over 95% within 20 ms of manually obtained boundaries. However, HMM based methods require large training data for good performance. Another major disadvantage of such
speech recognition based segmentation techniques is that they cannot handle very long utterances, Which are necessary for prosody modeling in
speech synthesis applications.
Development of Text to
Speech (TTS) systems in Indian languages has been difficult till date owing to the non-availability of sizeable segmented
speech databases of good quality. Further, no prosody models exist for most of the Indian languages. Therefore, long utterances (at the paragraph level and monologues) have been recorded, as part of this work, for creating the databases.
This thesis aims at automating segmentation of very long
speech sentences recorded for the application of corpus-based TTS synthesis for multiple Indian languages. In this explicit segmentation problem, we need to force align boundaries in any utterance from its known phonetic transcription.
The major disadvantage of forcing boundary alignments on the entire
speech waveform of a long utterance is the accumulation of boundary errors. To overcome this, we force boundaries between 2 known phones (here, 2 successive stop consonants are chosen) at a time. Here, the approach used is silence detection as a marker for stop consonants. This method gives around 89% (for Hindi database) accuracy and is language independent and training free. These stop consonants act as anchor points for the next stage.
Two methods for explicit segmentation have been proposed. Both the methods rely on the accuracy of the above stop…

▼ ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This thesis relates Christian ethics to the presence of the kingdom of God in Jesus’ sayings and to its real meaning and application by reconsidering the religious language of the kingdom of God from the perspective of the Speech Act Theory (SAT). In SAT, the Christian ethical approach to the presence of the kingdom in Jesus’ sayings is not only aimed at reconstructing meanings of the ethics of the kingdom in the form of a propositional morality theme. It also aims at reconstructing the Christian life as the performance of the ethics of the kingdom in daily life, that is, in terms of the presence of God’s kingdom in Jesus’ utterances and its witness. Christians do not merely assert certain facts about God’s sovereignty or God’s kingdom; they address God in the act of committing themselves to God’s kingdom and applying their minds to its righteousness. Since Christian ethics depends on the message of the kingdom proclaimed by Jesus, the essence of interpretation in Christian ethics is therefore to recognize the illocutionary act in the Bible. In SAT, only illocution is able to determine meaning and to act. It also creates the perlocutionary act as an appropriate response in the believer such as trust or obedience. The living Triune God is still speaking to us through Scripture – not in past stories but in the present in order to fulfil God’s will and God’s kingdom. This indicates that Jesus’ preaching about the kingdom of God focuses on what we should do or how we should live as Christians. The Bible is not supposed to be interpreted only in an academic context but should also be performed by the people of God. Consequently, the Christian community should try to discover the momentum and function of the text in order to build up the people of God to live in the world and to participate in the activities of the kingdom of God, not as spectators but as active participants in the present world. It also tells us who God is, and how we ought to live in relation to that God. Christian communities are called to institute policies that alter the settings in which the interpretation of Scripture takes place. In this way, Christian ethics can map out a new moral sensibility and specific directions through the presence of the kingdom of God in the light of SAT.

▼ From time to time, an issue comes along with significant enough implications for
future public policy development that the media begins to cover the topic in depth and at
length. Often when such issues emerge, many and varied interest groups advocating one
side or the other of the possibly future policy. With this wide influence on subsequent
policy, many more interest groups with a "dog in the fight," may strive to become part of
the policy discussion. Over time, the media may begin to adopt the point of view of one
coalition of interest groups and, before long, any other point of view may not be reported
as prevalently. This "dog in the fight" argument is the basis of the hypothesis of this
thesis: The greater the implications for public policy, the greater the potential for
imbalance in reportage. Using a content
analysis approach, 89 newspaper articles from the Chicago
Tribune and the New York Times newspapers were coded for point of views reported on
two issues: one with significant public policy implications and one issue without. Results
from 3 independent coders showed that there is a trend toward imbalance and issues with
significant public policy implications are reported differently. Conclusions include the
possibility of a changing role of the United States press and the implications of a changing democratic model if the press no longer functions as watchdog or arena for
public debate.

▼ The purpose of this study is to explore two aspects of the oratorio Jephte by Giacomo Carissimi: first is the manner in which Carissimi used The Doctrine of the Affections to organize the music textually, and second is the way in which Carissimi employed The Doctrine of the Affections to evoke Roman Catholic devotion. In the oratorio Jephte, Carissimi followed the affective characteristics in the modes and intervals, which Gioseffo Zarlino, in his book Le Istitatione Harmoniche (1558), and Nicola Vicentino, in his book L’antica musica (1555), discussed in the early sixteenth century. For the purpose of expressiveness, Carissimi used three prominent compositional techniques: paired transposition, mutatio toni, and mutatio modi. The Counter-Reformation movement of the sixteenth century Catholic Church gave birth to the devotional musical genre, oratorio. Carissimi, as a master of the Roman School of composition, infused a pious quality throughout the whole work of the oratorio Jephte, using the Doctrine of the Affections. The
analysis explores Carissimi’s usage of the Doctrine of the Affections in the oratorio Jephte to musically express the devotional nature of the Biblical story. The primary modes employed in the oratorio Jephte are Mixolydian, Ionian, Aeolian, and Phrygian; each mode represents specific characters. Moreover, through the use of intervallic affective characteristics, Carissimi transmits the concrete emotional properties of the text to the music. In the last movement of Jephte, Carissimi also used symbolism to give a moral message to the listeners.
