▼ A national push for reform in STEM K-12 education and a raised focus on including engineering in the classroom have emphasized the necessity for specific professional development opportunities for teachers. These programs are available; however, they are typically very expensive and consequently inaccessible to most educators in the public school sector. The Engineering Education Summer Conference (EESC) is a three day professional development conference for K-12 teachers interested in using engineering in their classrooms and is funded primarily by the University Transportation Center at Cleveland State University. Its goals are to debunk biases of engineers and engineering, provide resources and funding to teachers, and indirectly increase exposure K-12 students have to engineering. One day was devoted to hands-on activities during which teachers participated as learners, and the remaining days consisted of presentations by engineers, engineer organizations, staff at the Great Lakes Science Center, a grant writer, and teachers who have used engineering in their classrooms. The EESC evaluation was conducted in the summer of 2010 and examined the effectiveness in achieving those goals using a combination of quantitative and qualitative research methods. Findings show that the conference succeeded in increasing the belief that engineering is important and necessary in society. Results also suggested teachers left more familiar with engineering, though this conflicted with qualitative responses that revealed they were still unsure how to incorporate engineering into the classroom and stated that time constraints, not enough concept knowledge, confusion about how engineering related to their standards, and a lack of money were significant barriers in doing so. Data shows that conference participants left with more stereotypical views of engineers; more specifically, there were significant increases in the beliefs that engineers do not work wellwith people and that minorities do not have the skills necessary to be an engineer. ▼ Daar bestaan verskeie stressors in onderwysers se werksomgewing (Steyn & Kamper, 2006; Van den Berg, 2003). Cox (in Travers & Cooper,1996:4) noem egter dat volgehoue en voortdurende verandering, een van die grootste stressors blyk te wees. In die onderhawige studie is laerskoolonderwysers se aanpassing by veranderinge in die Suid-Afrikaanse kurrikulum ondersoek. Die navorsing het aan die hand van Interaktiewe Kwalitatiewe Analise (IKA) geskied, soos uiteengesit deur Northcutt en McCoy (2004). Die deelnemers was 14 laerskoolonderwysers wat 10-36 jaar ondervinding in die onderwys het. Die groep onderwysers het deel gevorm van ‘n gekose afdeling, op grond van wat hul in gemeen het en hoe naby hulle aan die fenomeen is, wat nagevors is. Die navorser het aan die hand van ’n gevallestudie as navorsingsontwerp en IKA as navorsingsmetode, gepoog om meer inligting rakende die navorsingsvraag in te win. Die Affiniteit Verhoudingstabel (AVD), Sistemiese Invloedsdiagram (SID) en Interverhoudingsdiagram (IRD), is gebruik en het deel gevorm van die ouditspoor. Tydens die navorsingsproses is IKA se sentrale benadering, naamlik dat deelnemers vrylik aan die navorsingsproses kan deelneem, deur die minimalisering van die invloed van die navorser en die ander deelnemers, as effektief en positief deur die navorser ervaar. Die navorser het slegs ‘n fasiliterende rol ingeneem en leiding aan die deelnemers verskaf terwyl hulle self hul data gegenereer, gegroepeer en benoem het. Deelnemers is elkeen die kans gegun om as individue hul persoonlike belewenisse en ervaring anoniem te beskryf en te benoem. Die studie demonstreer die belangrikheid van sewe konsepte, (naamlik: kurrikulum-veranderinge; onderwysers se gesindheid; negatiewe emosies en ervaringe; werkslading; groeiproses vir onderwysers; groeiproses vir kinders; en administrasie-frustrasie) in die navorsing van onderwysers se aanpassing by kurrikulumveranderinge. Die navorsing het gefokus op die invloed wat die kurrikulumveranderinge op die onderwysers en derhalwe ook op die leerders uitoefen. Msibi en Mchunu (2013:23) vestig die aandag op die belangrikheid van professionaliteit by die onderwyser en voer verder aan dat laasgenoemde die sukses van kurrikulumhervorming en ‘n algemene sistemiese verbetering van die onderwysstelsel sal bepaal. Ten spyte van die voortdurende veranderinge in die onderwysstelsel en kurrikulum, tesame met die toenemende werkslading, het die meerderheid onderwysers in die onderhawige studie steeds ’n positiewe gesindheid getoon en ook persoonlike groei beleef. Dié groep onderwysers plaas die leerders se belange en groei steeds eerste en vir hulle is dit die spil waarom alles draai. ▼ Community service learning, when integrated into the modules of academic learning programmes, has the potential to contribute to the value and effectiveness of learning by offering hands-on experience and placing the learners in real-life situations as part of their learning phase. Most of the research done on community service learning has investigated the benefits, outcomes and learning experiences of students engaged in service-learning programmes. As there is little or no research on students' attitudes to and perceptions of service learning before it is integrated into an academic programme, the purpose of this study was to determine teacher training students' attitudes to and perceptions of community service learning before it became integrated into their academic programmes. The research was quantitative in nature and followed a descriptive design, in which a survey employing a questionnaire as instrument was used for measuring the attitudes and perceptions of third-year teacher training students at the Faculty of Education, University of Pretoria. A purposeful or non-probability sampling strategy was used, yielding a sample size of 168 students (n=±168). The results of the study indicate that students with prior knowledge of and/or participation in a community service programme showed greater willingness to enrol for such a programme, especially if it would add value to their career development and bear credits. The conclusion is that teacher training students are career focused and need to know more about community service learning before such courses/modules are integrated into their curriculum, to ensure their positive participation and enhanced learning. Recommendations are made with the intention of providing information to academic staff, to assist them with the successful design and implementation of courses/modules which include community service learning and would be meaningful to the community and of value to the student. The recommendations are also intended to encourage students to participate more willingly in community service learning courses/modules. These recommendations include a discussion on a thorough introduction to the pedagogy before integrating it into their curriculum. Advisors/Committee Members: Dr C J G Bender (advisor).

▼ Canada is faced with a shortage of workers in order for it to remain competitive in today's global and ferocious market place. One of the reasons which explains this problem is that Baby Boomers are retiring in hoards. As such, the State is now faced with having to replace this labour force, or "brain force", given the information age and the fact that "grey matter" is now the most valuable capital asset worldwide. Consequently, governments are turning to post-secondary institutions as are employers seeking out competent workers. On their end, these institutions are faced with a chronic problem be it at university, college or apprenticeship levels. Their predicament lies in the retention and success of students enrolled in their first year of studies. On all sides, there is unanimity pertaining to the success of this first year which is considered a sine qua non condition toward improving the probabilities that the student will complete his program of study. Thus equipped, he is more apt to meet the requirements of the labour market and to anticipate a promising future. This subsequent problem causes us concern and so it merits our attention. To do so, we have determined gaps in the students' ability to succeed academically. We are abreast of several studies that touch on social, cultural, environmental and economic factors that are external to the student. We have also taken a look at several support initiatives geared toward addressing these. To date, in spite all good intentions, statistics continue to be somber in that regard. This information supports our hypothesis to the effect that factors inherent to the student play an important role in his success. This theoretical study focuses specifically on these: affectivity and metacognition, as well as on various intervention strategies that can support the student in this regard. The methodology that we use to support our postulate is the research, collection and analysis of theoretical and empirical information. We refer to statistics pertaining to the drop-out, failure and change-of-program rates of these students. We examine various strategies aimed at reversing this unfortunate trend. Secondly and as our theoretical framework, we refer to several recent works that focus on the study of intrinsic characteristics that support students as they engage in post-secondary studies and which are affective and metacognitive qualifiers. These also suggest intervention methods which aim at filling the gap for these novice students. We continue by arguing our premise to the effect that affective and metacognitive aptitudes that the student hones as he embarks in higher education play a significant part in his capacity to succeed in his studies. Furthermore, we present two cause-and-effect phenomena which manifest themselves almost naturally when the student feels capable of undertaking the task at hand: increased motivation to persist and hope which propels him closer to reaching his objective. ▼ The purpose of this study was to explore and describe the use of Gestalt therapy as an alternative assessment technique with two primary school girls who have been sexually abused. The empirical study of limited extent, was qualitative in nature and conducted from the interpretivist paradigm. I used two in-depth clinical case studies situated within the context of psychotherapy outcome research as research design. I developed and implemented alternative assessment based on Gestalt therapy and employed observation, interviews, informal discussions, analysis of documentation, a reflective diary, field notes and visual data (photographs and original media) as data collection and documentation methods. I purposefully selected two primary school girls who have been sexually abused as participants in the study. The findings of the study were, firstly, that Gestalt therapy could be used as an effective alternative assessment technique with the target participants as it seemingly provided a safe setting to express emotions, fears and needs related to the trauma of sexual abuse. In this regard, a finding was that the primary participants had to deal with challenging emotions including anxiety, fear, aggression, anger, hatred, rage, sadness and depression. A related finding was that they experienced a need for love, unconditional acceptance, support and protection. Similarly, the study found that they also displayed negative behaviour such as inadequate social behaviour, restlessness and withdrawal from challenging social situations. Most importantly, utilising this mode of assessment rendered insight into the defence mechanisms they employed such as denial, avoidance, suppression and escapism. Secondly, alternative assessments based on Gestalt therapy seemed to have a positive effect on both participants, as indicated by change during and after the process of assessment in terms of emotions, behaviour and the use of defence mechanisms. ▼ Play, including recess, is viewed by child development experts as beneficial to students’ various aspects of development—social, cognitive, emotional, and physical. Recess is also deemed an opportunity for all to recharge and re-energize after hours of sitting and concentrating on instruction and assigned tasks. With the implementation of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, many schools across the United States replaced recess with instructional time in order to prepare better the students undertaking their state’s standardized tests. Furthermore, instructional practices in elementary schools shifted from child-centered, play-based strategies to teacher-centered, didactic strategies. The purpose of this research was to examine fourth-grade teachers’ beliefs about the value of play in child development and classroom instruction, the types of instructional strategies they actually use in their classrooms and their students’ behaviors on the playground and in the classroom in a school with morning and midday recesses and a school with only midday recess. A qualitative phenomenological research method was used for this study in order to describe the lived experiences of teachers in the classroom and their students in the classroom and on the playground. Interviews and observations reveal that the teachers at both schools believe that play and recess are important to the development of their students, but neither has greatly modified instructional strategies to help students reap the benefits which arise through play during recess as the amount of time allotted to recess in both schools has decreased. Teachers’ reliance on teacher-centered instructional practices may be due to misconceptions about play and play-basedinstruction. Professional development for teachers and school/district administrators is needed to help to nurture a positive philosophical understanding of play and play-based, student-centered instructional practices that can foster students’ social, emotional and cognitive development, in addition to addressing the requisite content and skills called for in the various content standards.
