1. Prouse, Emma. The influences of work engagement and intention to turnover in pilots and cabin crew in a New Zealand based airline organisation.

The motivational process linking job resources with engagement and intention to turnover was investigated in a New Zealand based airline organisation using an online survey of pilots and cabin crew (n=132). This study integrated two previously developed models of engagement, by Schaufeli and Bakker (2004) and May, Gilson and Harter (2004). The job resources of autonomy, supervisor support, coworker support and procedural fairness were proposed to relate to engagement through the activation of the psychological experiences of work related meaningfulness and psychological safety. Autonomy, coworker support and procedural fairness contributed significant explained variance to meaningfulness; while supervisor support, coworker support and procedural fairness contributed to psychological safety. Meaningfulness explained significant variance in engagement, which is consistent with the Job Demands-Resource theory of engagement where job resources are related to engagement via a motivational pathway. Meaningfulness was found to partially mediate the relationship between autonomy, supervisor support, procedural fairness and engagement, while psychological safety partially mediated the relationship between autonomy and engagement. Consistent with Schaufeli and Bakker?s (2004) model, engagement was found to be negatively related to intention to turnover. In addition both meaningfulness and psychological safety contributed significant variance to intention to turnover. This suggests that a motivational pathway, provided by meaningfulness, relates job resources to engagement, while psychological safety becomes important when addressing turnover intentions. This study has implications for practical application in organisations.

Power imbalances and gender-based violence (GBV) have increasingly been cited as important determinants putting women at risk of HIV infections. Studies have shown that globally one in every three women has been beaten, coerced into sex or otherwise abused in her lifetime. The study explored working women’s perceptions of power, gender-based violence and HIV-infection risks. A qualitative, explorative study was conducted among female employees in an airline business in Namibia. Five women participated in in-depth, face-to-face interviews. The findings show that all of the participants experienced power imbalances and GBV in their intimate relationships. All of the women reported emotional or psychological abuse, whilst the majority were subjected to economic abuse, followed by physical abuse, and two alleged having been sexually abused. The study concludes with specific recommendations for the development and successful implementation of workplace policy and programmes to protect and promote women’s rights. A column generation based approach is proposed to solve scheduling problems for fractional airlines efficiently and return near optimal schedules. Crew tours are building blocks of our approach, and our approach is focused on exploring more feasible tours than other approaches. In particular, all elements of a crew tour are optimized during the preparation and tour generation procedures. Moreover, time windows of customer-requested flights are handled exactly, and generalized to time window and crew time window of duties and tours. Furthermore, time windows of tours are contained in the MIP formulation to ensure more feasible connections between tours. In the pricing subproblem, an efficient constrained shortest path algorithm is proposed, which is necessary for our model and also provides extensibility for incorporating more complex constraints in the future. Computational results of our model show very small optimality gaps and consistent improvements over the model used in practice. Moreover, restricted versions of our model that have fast running time are provided, thus very desired in the case that running time has more priority than solution quality. In order to understand the demand, data mining of demand data is presented and analyzed. Moreover, a recovery model is proposed to deal with unscheduled maintenance in practice, by reserving airplanes and crews in the model. Computational experiments show the advantage of the recovery model, in the case of simulated unscheduled maintenance and comparing to models without recovery considerations.
