▼ Strategy implementation is an integral part of the strategic management process as it entails converting the formulated strategy into action. Managers who successfully implement their strategies enjoy competitive advantage over organizations with managers who are less competent in implementing strategy. The purpose of this study was to establish strategy implementation and the competitive advantage of the firms in the airline industry in Kenya. The research adopted a cross-sectional survey and used structured questionnaires to collect information from top managers from the 15 locally registered airlines in Kenya. Data collected was presented using tables and figures and was analyzed in Microsoft Excel 2007 version. The results confirm that for an entity to achieve competitive advantage in the industry, Management needs to identify the effective strategies to be adopted for maximum returns to the organization. The study also confirms that the management needs to have a due diligence on both internal and external environmental factors and their impacts to the organization in its bid to gain competitive advantage in the industry. This is because the various factors have different levels of impact and return to the organization hence management need to establish how best to take advantage of each of the factors for maximum returns to the organization. The study recommends that policy makers and management in airlines pay close attention to cost leadership and market penetration as these are the strategies being effectively implemented in successful airlines in Kenya. Key to this is management of the external factors, rivalry within the industry and the bargaining power of suppliers as these were found to be the two highest factors influencing competitive advantage in the industry. The management then needs to design an implementation matrix that combines both internal and external factors that consistently ensures maximum returns to the organization. Researchers should delve further into the relationship between strategies implemented, competitive advantage and financial performance of airlines in Kenya.

In the context of
airline industry, the revenue management is the practice of managing the ticket sales in an
airline booking process with an important target of maximizing the sales revenues. The topic has been studied since the early 1970s. In recent years, an application model, which uses the financial option theory in revenue management for single-fare single-leg problem in
airline industry, has been designed.
The purpose of this thesis is to advance the model to make it more reasonable to apply. An
airline may be considered as the holder of both call option tickets for customers and put option tickets for travel agents. Based on different demand situations, the
airline could offer two levels of tickets to its customers at any period for a single leg. Also, at the last minute before departure, the overbooked passengers may choose to travel in a different class or not to travel, rather than waiting for the next flight. The potential revenue loss caused by customer dissatisfaction, which results from denied boarding, is also taken into consideration. These factors determine the optimal booking limits for call and put option tickets, and the optimal prices for the two options. A general description of the whole booking process is presented. At last, a numerical example is given to illustrate the application of the model.

▼ My dissertation chapters study carriers' pricing and subcontracting strategies in the U.S.
airline industry. The first chapter is a joint paper with my advisor Dr. Qihong Liu and committee member Dr. Myongjin Kim. It focuses on the impact of airlines' baggage fee. In 2010, Spirit airlines announced that it would start charging passengers for carry-on baggage. Using a vector of route level characteristics, we construct a matched group consisting of routes which best match those served by Spirit (treated group). We then run a diff-in-diff estimation using the treated and matched group, and examine the impact of Spirit's baggage fee policy on its rivals' ticket prices. Our results show that Spirit's rivals reduce their prices by about 5.8% after Spirit charges carry-on baggage fee. Looking into potentially heterogeneous impacts, we find that the policy impact is smaller on low-cost carriers relative to legacy carriers. We also take into account subcontracting status. Relative to non-subcontracting carriers, those which subcontract operations to regional carriers reduce their prices further by more than 10%, including average price (linear or log) and various points on the price distribution. We also discuss how the significant price reduction on subcontracting routes may negatively impact regional carriers.
Chapter 2 is a joint paper with my co-advisor Dr. Georgia Kosmopoulou. In this paper, we use Bayesian estimation to study subcontracting network formation and pricing decisions in the US
airline industry. We find that, a major carrier is more likely to enter a route in subcontracting services if its rivals have already subcontracted while regional carriers prefer to avoid competition. For existing major carriers per-route, self-service and use of subsidiaries are complementary to subcontracting, while code-sharing is a substitute. Carrier similarity and previously formed networks have significant impacts on new network formations. Taking potential endogeneity issues into account, we find that major carriers’ subcontracting behaviors decrease ticket prices by 3.4%.
The third chapter takes an approach of duopolistic third-degree price discrimination with homogeneous product to understand airlines' carry-on baggage fee decisions, with the assumption of firms competing in price with precommitment of quantities. In the theoretical model, two firms compete in both the high-end market (carry-on passengers) and the low-end market (non-carry-on passengers). A firm may use add-on pricing as a tool to distinguish passengers across markets and charge separate prices. The theoretical results suggest that the adoption of a carry-on baggage fee is caused by the decrease in the willingness to pays or the fraction of non-carry-on passengers, which can be reflected by the decrease in the skewness of
airline ticket price distribution. With panel regression and survival analysis, I find a negative relationship between price skewness and the adoption of carry-on baggage fee and provide some evidence supporting the theoretical…

▼ My dissertation chapters are empirical researches on the U.S.
airline industry. In the first chapter, I use different discrete choice models to study major carriers’ decisions on outsourcing their service to smaller regional carriers. First, I find that limited market size and fierce market competition are main reasons for major carriers to choose complete and partial outsourcing respectively. Regarding the choice of partners, I find that major carriers are more likely to choose fully-owned regional subsidiaries on more competitive routes. Finally, I find that partial outsourcing does not really give major carriers extra advantage in price competition with low cost entrants.
Chapter 2 is a joint paper with my co-advisors Dr. Qihong Liu and Dr. Myongjin Kim. It is about the pass-through of jet fuel price to
airline passengers. We find that
airline fares are affected by both current and lagged fuel price, and airlines transfer more cost burden to passengers on less competitive routes. We have tried to estimate the level of pass-through and get a value over 100%, which means per dollar increase in fuel cost will increase market fare by more than one dollar.
The third chapter is also related to regional outsourcing. Based on the underlying finding in the literature that outsourcing to fully owned subsidiaries improve the quality of service, I check the response of carriers in price and quantity when changes happen to the ownership structure of their competitors’ regional partners, i.e. when integration / de-integration takes place. Both changes seem to increase the quality gap between major and low cost carriers as major carriers always have stronger incentive and richer resources to keep the quality of their service. And enlarged vertical differentiation tends to mitigate price competition when vertical integrations happen.

▼ The first chapter is a joint paper with my committee member as well as my mentor, Dr. Myongjin Kim and Dr. Kerry Tan Loyola from University Maryland. We study the impact of tacit collusion on price dispersion in the U.S.
airline industry. We find that tacit collusion driven by multimarket contact has a positive effect on prices, but a negative effect on price dispersion. Our empirical results suggest that airfares throughout the price distribution increases, yet the price distribution becomes more compressed since 10th percentile airfares increase by a larger amount than 90th percentile airfares. Moreover, we also find that this pricing phenomenon does not exist if Southwest Airlines is present on the route. Thus, route-level price competition is softened when the same airlines directly compete more frequently, except when Southwest Airlines services that route. As such, our empirical analysis provides evidence that the presence of Southwest Airlines exhibits an anti-collusive effect.
Chapter 2 is a joint work with my mentor, Dr. Myongjin Kim and Dr. Qi Ge from Vassar College. This paper examines US
airline mergers between 1993 and 2018 and studies their impact on the labor market. Our difference-in-differences estimates indicate a significant reduction in the merging airlines' long-term wage and fringe benefits following the mergers. The effect is particularly salient among large-scale mergers involving major airlines and low cost carriers. The results also suggest a negative short-term employment impact of mergers that varies by occupation types. Our findings are consistent with the impact of merger-induced monopsony power discussed in recent literature and offer important policy implications regarding how to account for employer monopsony power during mergers and acquisitions.
In the third chapter which is a joint work with my best friends, Brent Norwood and Sean O'Connor, we identify the cross and inter-state effects of marijuana legalization on house prices using a national housing data set from the online real estate listing database Zillow.com. We find positive effects upwards of ten percent in the top half of the price distribution following successful legalization ballot initiatives, and between five and fifteen percent across the distribution after the state enacts the ballot initiative and the first legal sales take place. A spatial difference-in-differences model reveals that within Colorado and Washington, prices in neighborhoods with new dispensary openings nearby experience a seven percent price appreciation. To summarize, our results suggest that there are second order benefits to marijuana legalization.

Kessides (1994) and Ciliberto and Williams (2014) to find empirical
evidence of multimarket contact increasing price levels in a
market. We then apply the fixed-effects model to price dispersion
but find inconclusive results. We follow in the footsteps of
Ciliberto and Williams to use gate ownership at an airport as an
instrumental variable. We find evidence of the power of the
instruments through first-stage regressions and strength tests. The
application of the instrumental variables provides interesting but
inconclusive results for both price levels and price
dispersion.

via plane travel and accommodation. Among the many categories of
travelers, those with disabilities comprise a poorly and
underserved group whose numbers are increasing. Airlines and hotels
are consistently the two categories of service providers that
neglect and inadequately serve their disabled customers.; Findings:
Media coverage on this matter was sparse but very consistent. The
matter of equal treatment for disabled travelers is beginning to
gain attention. Laws relating to disability and travel have been
updated to be more specific and enforcement, though increasing, is
still not as stringent as it should be. Airlines and hotels have
the opportunity to develop better customer service practices or
face large fines as well as lose business.; Conclusion: Better
communication with and service of disabled travelers would not be
difficult and can increase profits. It will also, keep a company
from large fines and public embarrassment. More effective
communication between travel
industry service providers,
specifically airlines and hotels with disabled travelers can be
achieved by planning and engagement. Two strategies encompass the
necessary changes that need to be made; awareness training of staff
members who deal with customers and having information about
on-site amenities available when disabled travelers inquire about
booking.

▼ This dissertation is composed of two essays in the field of empirical industrial organization. They both examine how network structures arise in and affect markets. I focus on two industries. The first one is the airline industry, and the second one is the motion picture industry.
The first essay (chapter) studies airline networks. Airlines often match higher pas-
senger density with higher flight frequency. Meanwhile, a higher frequency reduces schedule delays, creating better service quality. This suggests that, on airline networks, the value of a link to passengers increases with the density on that link. I estimate a discrete choice model for U.S. airlines with endogenous link density. The model allows me to account for changes in frequencies in counterfactual experiments. I derive implications for airline pricing, market concentration and hub-and-spoke networks.
The second essay studies product entry in the presence of firm learning from the market outcomes of past products. Focusing on the U.S. motion picture industry, I construct a network capturing the similarity amongst the movies released in the last decades. I develop and estimate a model of how the network evolves. Risk averse firms make go/no go decisions on candidate products that arrive over time and can be either novel or similar to various previous products. I demonstrate that learning is an important factor in entry decisions and provide insights on the innovation vs. imitation tradeoff. In particular, I find that one firm benefits substantially from the learning by the other firms. I find that big-budget movies benefit more from imitation, but small-budget movies favor novelty. This leads to interesting market dynamics that cannot be produced by a model without learning.

▼ For most of the investors, their understanding about the
airline companies is based on all the announced public information. They make investment decisions on the operating performance which financial statement represented and hardly have any evaluation approach to those companiesâ intrinsic value. Practically, the purpose of the research is to use the daily jet fuel price, exchange rate and announced public information to forecast the future cost structure of
airline companies, and then calculate the intrinsic value of them.
First, this study uses jet fuel price to back-forecast earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) of Taiwan
airline companies from 2009 to 1st quarter of 2015, and expects to reduce the difference between forecasted EBIT and real EBIT. Then we apply the âforecastedâ EBIT to the free cash flow model (FCF) to calculate the intrinsic value of Taiwan
airline companies.
Second, we compare the intrinsic value and real stock price of the
airline companies, and use trading strategies to examine the performance of each
airline company. By doing so , we find that the performance is better than using latest monthly revenue to calculate the intrinsic value of
airline companies with any strategy most of the period.
At last, we compare our valuation parameter with big data monthly revenue-adjusted valuation approach, and provide some suggestions about the future research direction.

communication strategy used by Helios Airways after its Flight
CY522 crash on 14 August 2005. The objective of the study was: • to
examine the communication strategies Helios Airways chose and
implemented in order to satisfy the enquiries of stakeholders who
had different interests during the crisis. The pre-crisis
background of Helios Airways; events related to the crash of Flight
CY522, Boeing 737; and events after the crash were discussed. Owing
to this, the single case study research approach was followed in
conducting this study. Seven main issues emerge from the analysis
of the data obtained. • the issue of the safety culture of the
airline as discussed by the investigators of the crash; • the issue
of compensation and handling of victims’ families; • the issue of
the pressurisation defect of the aircraft identified the day before
its flight which was not fixed; • the issue of the failure of the
Boeing aircraft manufacturer to separate the signal which indicates
take-off problems from that of pressurisation problems; • the issue
of the government of Cyprus suspending flights after the crash; •
the issue of the government of Cyprus Civil Aviation Authority
granting a name change for Helios Airways to Ajet; and • the issue
of the European Aviation Safety Agency in banning flights of Helios
Airways. Denying responsibility, hedging responsibility, making
amends, ingratiation and eliciting sympathy strategies were
discussed inline with the crash of Helios Airways Flight CY522. Due
to the pressurisation defect of the aircraft identified the day
before its flight on the 14 August 2005, which was not fixed, the
safety culture of the
Airline had been perceived by the Cypriot
public as low. This together with the delay of the compensation of
the victims’ families and the confusing communication strategies,
resulted in a negative public image of the
Airline. The public
insisted on the government of Cyprus banning the flight routes of
Helios Airways. Due to those issues, Helios Airways was obliged to
change its name to Ajet. However, even after the name change, the
public did not accept Helios Airways as an
airline of choice.
Instead, they continued defaming Ajet in different media. Finally,
Ajet ceased all operations and filed for bankruptcy. The major
finding of this study is that Helios Airways did not have a crisis
communication plan prepared in advance, and as a result, Helios
Airways failed to communicate with its stakeholders, mainly the
victims’ families and the media, by implementing a mix of
inaccurate strategies without knowing exactly those stakeholders’
impact and degrees of involvement. There was no accurate
correlation between the investigation progress and results, and the
strategies. This can be substantiated from the niche width theory,
which explains specialist airlines, as in Helios Airways, tend not

▼ This dissertation studies the effects of firm's collaborative strategy on both demand
and supply, and equilibrium to derive various welfare implications. I explain both
horizontal mergers and vertical relationships, focusing on the U.S.
airline industry.
In the first study, I address significant limitations of traditional merger simulations which have focused solely on price changes while constraining the set of product characteristics to be identical pre- and post-merger. To overcome the limitations, I endogenize both prices and product characteristics by specifying a two-stage oligopoly game. After estimating demand and supply system, I simulate the effect of the Delta and Northwest Airlines merger on prices, product characteristics, and welfare. The simulation results show that the merged rm tends to increase product differentiation post-merger, the higher product differentiation reduces the firm's incentive to raise prices, and the changes in characteristics and prices increase not only the merged firm's profit but also consumer welfare. I also compare the predicted to actual post-merger outcome and find that endogenizing product characteristics is essential to better predict the actual outcome.
The second study investigates the impact of contractual agreements regarding
gates between airports and carriers on major carrier's market power. Competition
Plans reported by thirty one hub airports provide information on a carrier's gate-
occupancy, sublease agreement, and Majority-In-Interest clauses at an airport. I
estimate the effects of these contractual practices on passengers' utility and carriers'
marginal costs. The main results show that a carrier's gate dominance has a positive
effect on the demand side through passengers' utility, and business travelers have a
higher willingness to pay for gates than tourists. On the supply side, a carrier's gate
dominance decreases its own marginal cost, especially when the airport is congested.
Furthermore, the existence of sublease agreement at an airport is likely to increase
non-signatory carriers' marginal costs, whereas the provision of Majority-In-Interest
clauses increases signatory carriers' marginal costs. Based on the estimates, I execute
a counterfactual analysis and nd that regulatory limits on gate occupancy can
reduce the di erentials in costs and pro ts between signatory and non-signatory
airlines.

▼ In this qualitative study, I examine the experiences of African American pilots and flight attendants with emotional labor. Integral to existing theories of emotional labor is the incorporation of voices of color and their contemporary movement into professional industries. Essentially, most all theories of emotional labor were built through the examination of low-wage service workers in gendered or racially segregated occupations, with only recent incorporations of gendered occupations within professional settings. Using the theoretical concept of emotional labor, or the labor required to reduce or suppress feeling in order to sustain the outward countenance that produces the proper state of mind in others, I argue that emotional labor is much more than labor produced within the confines of a job, but is also based on identity characteristics that directly influence interactions in the workplace. Therefore, I qualitatively examine, through in-depth interviews with more than thirty African American flight crew members, how emotional labor is influenced and performed when people of color are introduced to professional settings.
The results of this study show that there are multiple dimensions of emotional labor that should be added to existing theory. Primarily, existing standards of emotional labor in the
airline industry are a direct result of institutional structures and cultures created during a period of systematic exclusion that do not account for contemporary racism and sexism. Thus, performing emotional labor in this
industry is unequally placed on those white women and people of color that had no input into its creation. The results of this study suggest that emotional labor should be inclusive of systemic racism perspectives as a method of understanding how salient identity characteristics, such as gender, race, and class, are directly connected to preconceived ideologies that influence interactions that call for emotional labor. Moreover, because African American men and women in this
industry are underrepresented, emotional labor becomes a necessity in their interactions with coworkers, consumers, and management. In addition, African Americans experience highly regulated emotional labor that influence how they perform their jobs, interact with others, and formulate appropriate counter-narratives.

This thesis contributes to the continuing, unresolved debates — in both theory and policy — over the structure of labour regulation within Australia and overseas. This contribution comes through an extended critique of the existing literature, as well as providing a description and explanation of the changing structure of labour regulation in one industry: the Australian domestic airlines. Conceptually, the thesis is based on an exchange with the ‘bargaining structures’ literature. It is argued that, despite its many strengths, this literature has delivered only a partial description. The full picture of labour regulation change remains obscured. Part of the problem can easily be seen in the term ‘bargaining structure’ since many significant regulatory processes do not involve ‘bargaining’. The traditional preoccupation in the existing literature with ‘collective’ forms of regulation also privileges a process that no longer dominates the making of the rules of the employment relationship. This thesis replaces ‘bargaining structure’ with the broader concept of ‘labour regulation’. Secondly, explanations in the existing literature of bargaining structures are excessively narrow and lack holism. The thesis therefore develops and applies a broader and more systematic framework for the analysis of ‘labour regulation’, bringing together both context and agency. The empirical investigation was conducted across three companies and several unions within the Australian airline industry between 1990 and 2006. The descriptive account confirms that the structure of labour regulation shifted significantly: the parties changed, the level of regulation decentralised, the scope of regulation declined and complexity increased. The highly unionised nature of the industry meant that collective regulation continued, but it was under pressure and its character changed. Non-bargained and individualistic forms of regulation were on the increase. The explanation for these changes lies in a complex interplay between a series of mostly state-induced contextual factors. These altered the product market and changed the regulatory options available to the parties, together with the agency of both management and unions.

This research aims to contribute to strategic management theory by providing a greater understanding of resilience approaches in the airline industry when facing a sudden crisis. Based on the evidence that crises are cyclical, and drawing on extensive secondary data and documental analysis relevant to the 2008 Global Financial Crisis (GFC), the study denounces the reactive nature of the strategies that were applied in response to the crisis, and advocates a need for a proactive approach to examining what strategies might be considered by airlines in the process of resilience creation to the next sudden crisis. The 2008 GFC has had a disruptive effect on many firms in the airline industry, denouncing a need for businesses to build resilience to crisis mechanisms, so as to avoid major threats to their financial and competitive performance, and ultimate sustainability. Distinct levels of preparedness, or resilience, to dealing with the effects of the GFC, and the different effects experienced in different regions, explain why different airlines adopted different crisis management strategies, highlighting the volatile nature of the global airline industry’s competitive environment. Hence, there is a need to examine airlines’ resilience at global and regional levels, with a view to building up predictive competencies to acquire resilience and to compete successfully in anticipation of a new sudden crisis. From a theoretical perspective, Porter’s Five Forces model and the Three Generic Strategies for competitive advantage provide the theoretical framework, being used to develop the research questions and propositions that guide this study. A cost leadership strategy involves actions such as maintaining a lean workforce and establishing/increasing the number of subsidiary companies to achieve economies of scale and scope at the lowest cost for profitability, suitably focused on market(s) where they compete. Airlines also may need to consider focus strategies, possibly involving network expansion strategies, by increasing the number of destinations they serve profitably, fleet size and capacity, as well as joining one of the global strategic alliances. Finally, while differentiation strategies through high quality service and brand image may not have a significant impact on airlines performance all of the time, they may help create effective competitive positions that may be the core of competitive advantage and resilience to crisis. From regional perspective, while regional differences generally have a significant influence on an airline’s revenue and cost, various competitive strategies were found to have different strong impact on airline’s performance in different regions. ▼ Most industries are confronted with increasingly volatile environments that consist
of rapid change and unpredictable dynamics. These factors require a particular leadership
style that is capable of dealing with complexity. The suggested alternative leadership
paradigm is based on the ideas of quantum mechanics, complexity theory and relativity
theory; thus referred to as Einsteinian-Quantum leadership paradigm. To establish whether
such leadership paradigm is emerging in volatile environments, semi-structured interviews
and multiple surveys were distributed to managers and leaders in the international
airline
industry. Based on the results, a Quantum Leadership Matrix (QLM) was established to test
for the level of quantum leadership behaviour in the selected
industry and assist in
identifying gaps between Newtonian-Cartesian and Einsteinian-Quantum characteristics in
order to develop sustainable leadership models. The QLM and surveys indicated that
managers and leaders still resist in a transition phase where both Newtonian-Cartesian and
Einsteinian-Quantum leadership characteristics can be observed simultaneously.

▼ This study explores the notions of 'success' and 'failure' held by senior executives in the UK and Irish airline industry. Previous studies of this industry have tended to be from a positivist perspective, focusing on financial performance at the level of 'airline' or 'airline industry'. This study takes the airline executive as the unit of analysis and is conducted from a phenomenological perspective.
A methodology using interviews, causal mapping and postal questionnaires is applied to surface the notions of 'success' and 'failure' and the perception of the causes of 'success' held by board-level airline executives. Standardised data published by the Civil Aviation Authority Economic Research Group is used to establish a range of objective measures, both financial and operational, and these objective measures are compared with the rankings of the senior executives' perceptions of the success of UK and Irish airlines.
The research establishes that senior airline executives do not see 'success' in terms of financial objective measures such as Added Value or Operating Ratio; they use profit as the primary financial measure of 'success' and frequently hold notions of 'success' that are based in other functional areas such as operations and marketing. The causes of 'success' are seen as coming from the breadth of functional areas. The influence of HRM factors becomes clearer at deeper levels of abstraction when considering 'success'. There is limited evidence of the stereotyping of perceptions when the success of specific airlines is considered, but not for airlines' success in general.
Recommendations for further research into the management of human resources within airlines are made.

However, the concept of linear value chain has recently become unsuitable as a tool to analyze some industries and to uncover many sources of value. The value grid approach allows firms to identify opportunities and threats in a more explicit way than with the traditional value chain model. Until now, there are still not many researchers working on the concept of value grid. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to exemplify the value grid model in airline industry with a case study of Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) and to illustrate its application, the provision of airline industry and content is explored to identify potential strategic implications for Scandinavian Airlines (SAS).

The environmental impacts of tourism have recently become a high-profile topic due to the increasing amount of attention devoted to issues such as climate change. The harmful effects of aviation, in particular, have led airline companies to adopt proactive sustainability agendas. In light of this, this study seeks to explore the extent of environmental awareness amongst consumers as well as the effects that corporate sustainability measures have on the decision-making process of air travelers.
Purpose:
The purpose of this thesis is to determine whether or not consumers value environmental responsibility within the airline industry and to determine the factors that influence the consumer decision-making process.
Method:
This thesis utilizes a mixed-method approach, with both quantitative and qualitative methods employed. Quantitative data was collected through a survey distributed online and to travelers at Göteborg Landvetter airport, with a total of 95 respondents. Additionally, an in-depth interview was conducted with Stefan Gössling, a prominent researcher within the field of tourism.
Findings:
The results of this thesis reveal relatively low awareness amongst consumers with regard to the environmental actions of airlines. Although consumers appear to have a general knowledge of the negative impacts of air travel, they are reluctant to alter their own flying behavior. Additionally, the results of the survey reveal that consumers are not yet familiar with the concept of eco-friendly flights or the sustainable options that are available to them when purchasing flight tickets. Ultimately, when buying from airline companies, consumers place greater emphasis on other factors such as costs, services and the availability of desired routes.

▼ This thesis examines the impact of oil price fluctuations and jet fuel hedging on firm value before, during and after the subprime crisis. Four regressions are estimated with two different variables representing firm value; market return and market valuation. The result of this study shows that the airlines’ oil price exposure has substantially decreased over time and that jet fuel hedging does not add value for investors.

▼ This thesis studies the network structure and network competition (Chapter 1), strategic entry deterrence (Chapter 2) and demand (Chapter 3) in the
airline industry. Chapter 3 extends the pricing competition stage in Chapter 1 and estimates a structural model of demand and price competition. However, both Chapters 1 and 3 ignore the entry deterrence motives of the airlines which are analyzed in Chapter 2.
The first chapter studies network competition in the US
airline industry. I propose a structural model of oligopoly competition where the set of endogenous strategic decisions of an
airline includes its network structure (i.e., the set of city-pairs where the
airline operates nonstop flights), capacities (i.e., flight frequency and number of seats) for every city-pair where they are active, and prices for nonstop and one-stop routes. In this paper, I propose and implement simple methods for the estimation of the model and for the evaluation of counterfactual experiments that avoid the computation of an equilibrium. The estimation of the model shows that ignoring the endogenous network structure in this
industry implies a substantial downward bias in the estimates of marginal revenues and marginal cost of capacity. The estimated model is used to evaluate the effects of the counterfactual entry of JetBlue into the segment between Atlanta and New York. I find that the JetBlue entry into this city-pair (segment) would have substantial competition effects in other city-pairs, even in those that that are not directly connected to Atlanta or New York.
The second chapter empirically studies three different but not mutually
exclusive hypotheses on entry deterrence that have been proposed to explain the observed patterns of
airline entry-exit decisions in city-pair markets. The first hypothesis establishes that the dominant positions of an
airline in an airport can help to deter entry. The second hypothesis is based on product proliferation: an incumbent
airline may want to provide more differentiated products (schedules) in order to lower the potential profitability of its competitors. The third hypothesis establishes that a hub-and-spoke network can be an effective mechanism to deter entry in spoke markets. I propose an approach to empirically distinguish the contribution of these hypotheses to explain
airline entry and exit decision in city-pair markets. My results are based on new measures from combining of two U.S. Department of Transportation databases: DB1B and T100. I construct and estimate a structural entry game with incomplete
information, and use the estimated model to separate the contributions of these three hypotheses. I find empirical evidence for all of the three hypotheses.
The third chapter studies how different network structures and flight frequencies affect consumer willingness-to-pay and
airline ability to serve passengers, for both nonstop and one-stop services. In this paper, I propose and construct new measures of

The purpose of this research is to assess whether Cash Conversion Cycle differs between industries via their components, namely Days Inventory Outstanding, Days Sales Outstanding and Days Payables Outstanding.
Based on a sample of multinational companies from two different industries, Fast Moving Consumer Goods and Airline industry for the period 2009-2012, the results suggest that Cash Conversion Cycle differs between industries. Also it differs between large and smaller companies due to different accounting choices. It contributes to a better understanding about how size of the firm, inventory system, liquidity and payables impact on CCC and consequently on companies’ profitability.

▼ This dissertation extends the empirical industrial organization literature with two essays on strategic decisions of firms in imperfectly competitive markets and one essay on how inertia in consumer choice can result in significant welfare losses. Using data from the
airline industry I study a well-known puzzle in the literature whereby incumbent firms decrease fares when Southwest Airlines emerges as a potential entrant, but is not (yet) competing directly. In the first essay I describe this so-called Southwest Effect and use reduced-form analysis to offer possible explanations for why firms may choose to forgo profits today rather than wait until Southwest operates the route. The analysis suggests that incumbent firms are attempting to signal to Southwest that entry is unprofitable so as to deter its entry. The second essay develops this theme by extending a classic model from the IO literature, limit pricing, to a dynamic setting. Calibrations indicate the price cuts observed in the data can be captured by a dynamic limit pricing model. The third essay looks at another concentrated
industry, mobile telecoms, and studies how inertia in choice (be it inattention or switching costs) can lead to consumers being on poorly matched cellphone plans and how a simple policy proposal can have a considerable effect on welfare.

airline profit is challenging as several costs, such as fuel or manpower, have been increasing. Fierce competition has forced airlines to drastically reconsider their economic policy. Traditionally, revenue management techniques such as overbooking or dynamic pricing have been utilized to improve profit of the
airline industry. Recently, the use of financial options theory offers a different approach to
airline revenue maximization.
The purpose of this thesis is to apply financial option theory in order to maximize the expected revenue of the
airline per flight. An option-based model to maximize the
airline revenue under uncertainty and a numerical search method are presented. The demand distribution and the random walk of a ticket price cause uncertainty in the booking process. The proposed model assumes that the evaluation periods are discrete and uses the Cross-Ross-Rubinstein model (1979) to price the options. The complexity of the expected revenue expression does not allow for the utilization of calculus to maximize the airline’s profit. Therefore, a numerical search method is used to determine the optimal values for the decisions variables, which are the initial number of call and put options and the respective strike prices, for a given distribution of demand. A numerical example is presented and sensitivity analysis is performed to test the behavior of the model when changing input parameters (skewness of demand distribution and up and down moves of the ticket price). It is found that changing the skewness of the distribution has a significant effect on the expected revenue. Moreover, we show that the parameters of the random walk (the drift and its variance) directly affect the utilization of options, because these have a direct effect on the probability that the ticket price increases. Our analysis demonstrates the importance of accurate forecasting of demand and the precise estimation of the random walk parameters.

airline industries in Taiwan and China were engaged in TP via the ticket agent sales, in order to expand revenues and reduce the tax burdens. In fact, the benefits of TP are more pronounced when the tax burdens are high. Finally, this study contends that airlines transfer part of the revenues generated by ticket agents through recognizing prepaid tickets and payable to affiliates. The larger the percentage of revenues from affiliated parties and the bigger the company size, the more likely airlines will be involved in TP via the ticket agent system.

▼ Internet technology (IT) has changed the way information is disseminated, which has led to changes in transaction-making and the creation of new electronic markets. This has also led to the emer-gence of new types of online intermediaries, and new selling mechanisms. Since most online selling involves commodity goods and the discovery of low prices, the design of selling mechanism primarily focuses on the disclosure of price information. Low-price discovery selling mechanisms, however, have caused buyers to shift from one mechanism to another to get the best deals. Online sellers are facing profit pressures as a result. Price information only addresses a portion of consumer needs though. They need information to identify uncertainties that may harm them during transactions. Consumers also search for products and services that fit their individual preferences and are willing to pay a price premium for such offerings. Sellers have to offer additional information and to do decommoditization, or consumers will abandon selling mechanisms that do not match their needs. This dissertation examines these issues in three essays. It explores two online selling mechanisms: online group-buying auctions and a la carte pricing schemes in
airline industry. The a la carte pricing is to offer flexible pricing to consumers. The research employs an Internet-based experimental test bed, a single-firm empirical case study, and an econometric model to test the relevant theories. I evaluate the design of online group-buying auctions, where consumers are more uncertain about group-buying as a mechanism for organizing economic exchange. I also evaluate the design of online selling mechanisms in the air travel services
industry, where digitally-intermediation has created problems with suppliersâ ownership of their customers and increasing channel conflicts. The results indicate that the dominance of price in consumer purchase decisions can be mitigated by complementary information, as well as value-added product and service information that an online selling mechanism provides. Consumer information requirements are dynamic and inconsistent though. So an effective selling mechanism must identify how to disclose an adequate amount of information to consumer. Some of the new mechanism designs that have emerged have produced a means for sellers to be more effective. My findings suggest that, in addition to price transparency, online selling mechanisms also affect transaction completion uncertainty, and support the expression of personal preferences.
