▼ Radical innovation is a critical source for creating competitive advantage and value for potential customers. However,
radical innovation has inherent characteristics that make a
radical innovation project difficult to manage, such as: increased generativity – the aspect that describes how
radical innovation outcomes are creative and novel, different than other
radical innovation outcomes, and fundamental non-probabilistic uncertainty – uncertainty inherent to
radical innovation cannot be mitigated using data-driven forecasting techniques. The increased generativity and fundamental non-probabilistic uncertainty characteristics of
radical innovation presents challenges especially when a decision regarding the internal
adoption for further development of a
radical innovation concept needs to be made, as financial tools, such as Return On Investment (ROI) and Net Present Value (NPV) are widely used to evaluate and make a decision regarding the internal
adoption of
radical innovation concepts. The aim of this master thesis is taking a strategic design approach to design a tool, that facilitates the decision-making process behind the internal
adoption of
radical innovation concepts, while addressing the knowledge gap between the challenges of
radical innovation, and the decision-making tools and evaluation criteria currently used. Literature review and field research, consisting of qualitative interviews with experts from academia and experts working in industry, was conducted to understand the context of the decision-making process behind the internal
adoption of
radical innovation concepts. The research phase revealed the knowledge gap mentioned above and insights that were used towards devising design criteria for developing a tool. Insights gathered from the literature review and field research led to the development of the Viability Decision Canvas, a tool that facilitates the decision-making process behind the internal
adoption of
radical innovation concepts. The Viability Decision Canvas is based on the Viability Model which describes viability as the main decision criteria when a
radical innovation concept is evaluated by a company, where viability is modeled by desirability, feasibility and suitability. Viability Decision Canvas facilitates the evaluation and the decision-making process behind the internal
adoption of
radical innovation concepts by employing abductive reasoning in a Fast-and-Frugal decision tree format, that addresses the non-probabilistic uncertainty inherent to
radical innovation. The Viability Decision Canvas, besides the decision-maker, involves other relevant people (e.g. designer, engineer, marketer, senior manager, etc.) in the decision-making process to ensure organizational alignment. Being simple and structured, the Viability Decision Canvas allows and encourages rapid adjustment to suit the specific context of the company and the context created by the
radical innovation concept generativity aspect. Critical assumptions identified during the design of the Viability Decision Canvas were…

▼ In the Netherlands the cities of Rotterdam and Amsterdam are coping with problems of air quality and congestion caused by inner-city transport. The continued demand for cleaner air, especially in the inner-city, has produced multiple experiments in sustainable transport. Some of these solutions can be seen as radical innovations; however a guideline on implementing radical innovations does not exist. Innovation in the transport sector has predominantly been incremental. Radical steps in the transport regime have also been met with resistance of incumbent stakeholders. As such, the current regime needs a radical change if future goals of improving air quality should be achieved within the desired timeframe. A method to introduce radical innovation in a regime is to set-up a strategic niche, a niche that has the ultimate goal of changing the current regime. This thesis has reviewed experiments done with large electric trucks in the cities of Rotterdam and Amsterdam. These experiments both originate from the FREVUE project that strives to introduce electric freight transport in urban Europe. The main approach of this thesis has been conducting desk research on grey literature, open data from the FREVUE project, and by conducting interviews among prime stakeholders of the projects. This study finds that stakeholders possess little knowledge on Strategic Niche Management, however the three main elements in setting-up a strategic niche occur in more than one occasion in the experiments that were predominantly of a technical nature. All elements are endorsed by actions, or experiences of the stakeholders in the experiments. In addition several stakeholders stated that the enrolment of OEMs and Banks could have been helpful in building a business case and propose the use of a champion or agent of change to aid the stakeholders in their efforts.Learning can be subdivided in first order and second order learning. First order learning comprised of pure technical learning elements, such as reliability and operating range, was the main goal of the FREVUE project. Second order learning, interaction and policies, also occurred for both experiments.Even though second order learning was not the main purpose of the experiments, stakeholders verified that second order learning occurred. The contributions this study makes are practical, scientific and managerial. The building of social networks and the enrolment of more actors, led to the addition of champion theory as a method to gain access to the necessary network and to convince stakeholders to participate in the project. It also became clear that the stakeholders that were currently participating did not do so out of purely monetary reasons.

▼ Context: SMEs make up the major share of the manufacturing and trading industry in Hong Kong. Recently, the industry is faced with growing environmental uncertainty that may result in new challenges, consequently giving rise to a different set of needs concerning B2B relationships. These needs may present opportunities for alternative B2B platforms to further reduce friction in SME trade. Therefore, from the perspective of platform providers, it is valuable to assess what factors drive SMEs likeliness of using alternative platforms. Objective: This study extends existing research on IT switching behaviour by linking it to organisational innovation theory. According to extant literature, environmental uncertainty may lead to increased innovativeness and adaptability in organisations. The aim is to assess how perceived environmental uncertainty affects the propensity to switch in the context of B2B platform technologies. Method: A research model was developed by adapting the Push-pull -mooring model. It was extended with context-specific antecedents. The model was empirically tested with PLS-SEM using 68 responses from a survey with managers of Hong Kong SMEs. Results: We find that switching propensity is directly predicted by pull (attractiveness of alternatives), push (satisfaction with incumbent) and mooring (perceived switching cost) factors. Further, perceived network size is found to influence switching propensity mediated by satisfaction. Environmental uncertainty is found to positively affect the attractiveness of alternatives and top management innovativeness. Conclusion: The results have several managerial implications. Since attractiveness of alternatives was found to have the largest effect, managers may be advised to focus on differentiating their offerings from incumbent products. Further, the results suggest that within-group effects play a role for platform switching. More research is needed to further explore this hypothesis.

▼ Resource and cost-efficient innovations that are designed to address the needs of the low-income markets focused on “value for money’ are termed as frugal innovations. Frugal
innovation aims to provide financially poor consumers with economically effective solutions in order to deal with their problems. The idea of bringing business to the low-income groups with the intention of providing social benefits and at the same time, making profits was proposed by Prahalad. Identifying the factors responsible for the
adoption of frugal
innovation and understanding a consumer’s behavior is necessary for doing business in the Bottom of Pyramid (BoP) markets. The available literature on frugal
innovation is majorly focused on conceptual discussions and case studies. On the other hand, there is limited empirical data and quantitative work conducted in interpreting a consumer’s behavior at BoP. Thus, the research objective is, understanding the consumer behavior for the
adoption of frugal
innovation and therefore this paper will address the question of “what are the factors responsible for
adoption of frugal
innovation in water sector at BoP?” Three countries of East Africa were chosen to study and understand the factors that had an impact on the successful
adoption of a frugal
innovation. In addition to having a scarcity of safe drinking water, a considerable number of the population is at the BoP in Africa. This fact serves as a suitable market for the introduction of a frugal
innovation among the masses. The water sector, is an area often seen by companies as a potential area for entering BoP markets with the aim of selling safe and affordable drinking water. In developed countries, clean drinking water is mostly provided by the public sector. However, this may not always be the case in developing countries where people may lack access to safe drinking water due to infrastructural deficiencies. Looking at two cases of companies providing drinking water in East Africa (Kenya, Uganda, and Rwanda), it is one of the areas where they have filled a gap left by infrastructure deficiencies by providing a frugal
innovation in the form of low cost reusable bottled drinking water. In the first case, the water is purified at the central facility and the distribution occurs through the local shops in the region and the second case employs a franchise model where water is purified at the franchise location and the distributional costs are reduced by the presence of the large number of franchise and micro-franchise. Most frugal
innovation focuses predominantly on the cost cutting aspect of the innovative product but in this case the two water companies fit more with the Bhatti (2012)’s definition of the frugality in all the aspects of the production and the distribution process. To understand the consumer behavior, a theoretical model is developed in this research which consists of Demographics factors (Age, Gender, Household Income, Household size), Organoleptic factors (Color and taste, Psychological factors (Beliefs and…

▼ The purpose of this study was to gain insight in the technological and geographical origins of
radical innovation. Theory states that
radical innovations are recombinations of technologically unfamiliar knowledge, which are more likely to be conceived in an environment of high geographical proximity. In this research, I investigate the relationship between regional knowledge diversity and
radical innovation potential, and the mechanisms behind this relation. I calculated a radicality measure for nearly 50 million patents based on the coherence of their technology classes, and compared this to the regional knowledge diversity of 1400 TL2 and TL3 OECD regions based on 5 million region-assigned patents. The results show that there is indeed a positive relationship between regional knowledge diversity and
radical innovation potential. Furthermore the positive influence of technological and geographical proximity on knowledge spillovers is confirmed, as is dependency of an
innovation on its evolutionary knowledge base. Finally, the results indicate that, in opposition to theory,
radical innovations do not have an increased potential of success, whereas the increased risk of failure was confirmed. This implies that the theoretical beliefs regarding the evolutionary origins of
radical innovation can be confirmed. The presumed societal impact of these
radical innovations on the contrary, should be questioned, as no proof of increased impact is found in the present study.

▼ This study was initiated with a view to understand factors that either aids or presents a barrier towards the
adoption of a radically new public transport mode, Hyperloop. The initial promises of Hyperloop include a faster, cheaper, sustainable and efficient mode of transport compared to the existing public transport mode alternatives. However, the technology is largely conceptual and hasn’t been realized yet for commercial operations. Thus, it was found through literature review, that it was important to first study the perceptions on the development of Hyperloop. Also, since Hyperloop development would be of a multi-stakeholder nature, due to the extensive urban landscape and infrastructure changes, it is important to incorporate and/or address the concerns and incentives of every stakeholder involved. Furthermore, large scale infrastructural projects similar to Hyperloop, such as high Speed Rail have faced opposition from the public due to lack of general awareness. This research thus aimed to explore the existing perceptions on the development of Hyperloop, with a view to recommend an inclusive nature of development as well as policy design. To identify these perspectives the ‘Political Economy Model for Transport Innovations’ was used as a framework. Since existing literature of Product Development relevance of Hyperloop was limited at the time of the initiation of this study, the model was used to interview experts and stakeholders involved in the industrial development of Hyperloop to generate additional content and statements on Hyperloop. A limited set of 25 statements were then presented to a limited set of respondents to identify the patterns of perspectives on Hyperloop. The study was conducted in the Netherlands with a sample respondent size of 32 participants. To identify perceptions among these respondents, Q-methodology was used. Q-methodology helps in statistical derivation of subjectivity. It also helps the research identify broad patterns of subjective biases compared to the traditional qualitative analysis or R-factor analysis. Through this study 4 distinct perceptions were interpreted. The first perspective is that the public would support research and development on Hyperloop, with a view to either fully realise or help in positive knowledge spill over for adjacent technologies. The second perception interpreted was that the public would rather spend the resources on the development of current existing transport modes to achieve the objectives of Hyperloop. The third perception interpreted was that the public would fully support the implementation of Hyperloop. The fourth perception identifies the skepticism in the full commercial realization of Hyperloop. Through this study it was found that there is a healthy balance between positive and negative perceptions on the development of Hyperloop. Thus it is required to include the public as a primary stakeholder in its development. This could be enabled by a transparent flow of communication between all the stakeholders via a platform.…

▼ Design is a resource that could be better utilized by companies in order to create growth and sustainable innovation in the future. Numerous scholars have therefore stressed the importance of forward-looking executives and designers in today’s organizations that realize the importance of design as a differentiator. This research intends to illustrate how innovation of meanings is a future competitive advantage and to show how companies can benefit from design as an innovation tool. New product meanings can be pushed upon the market through proposals, something that is being compared to the traditional user-centred methods where user needs are being scrutinized. The theoretical framework identifies four factors that can be set in relation to any company in order to investigate its stance towards innovation of new meanings. The research is limited to focus on two case companies and complemented by information from Jönköping School of Engineering, being their mutual external source of novel design ideas. The case studies show how the four factors all rely on a vision that supports design and affects the firms’ ability to capitalize on novel ideas found among external sources. This study concludes that a co-occurring search of novel design interpretations and market pull innovations is of highest importance. It further discusses how to interact with external sources in a way that does not block their potential to explore new product meanings.

▼ Understanding the Relationship between the Adoption
of Innovation and Institutions– An Exploratory Qualitative Case
Study on NHS ProcurementDespite various efforts to introduce
support measures and financial incentives to improve innovation in
the public sector, it is widely perceived that the adoption of
innovation is a slow and complex process (Albury, 2005; Coriat and
Levinthal, 1990). Evidence of previous research indicates that the
adoption of innovation varies considerably across public sector
organisations, regardless of the perceived potential benefit of the
new product (or service) (Cash and MOster, 2000; Edquist, 2005).The
public procurement and innovation literature emphasises the
potential of public sector organisations as important buyers and
adopters of innovation, highlighting the role of public demand for
the triggering and diffusion of innovation (Edler et al. 2011;
Cunningham and Karakasidou, 2009; Edquist, 1997). However,
innovation adoption in the public sector has been characterised as
a slow and unpredictable process where the underlying institutional
factors that play a role in the adoption process are not fully
understood (Albury, 2005; Allman et al., 2011). The topic of poor
adoption in the public sector is of great significance, not only
for the innovation agenda, but also due to the increasing pressure
on the public sector to achieve higher quality services with more
efficient allocation of resources, particularly the NHS (Bonoma,
1985).The main objective of the research is to address the problem
of slow and inconsistent adoption of innovation in the public
sector, by providing a more holistic and institutional perspective
to the study of innovation adoption, addressing the lack of context
specific research on the topic. A major focus of this work is to
understand the relationship between the adoption of innovation and
institutions as a means to establish a more in-depth understanding
of the institutional features that influence the adoption process.
The research focuses on new technology procurement cases in the
context of the English and Scottish NHS system, as two different
institutional contexts, in order to identify the institutional
features at the system’s and organisational level hat make a
difference in adoption of innovation.

▼ Building on existing theories of diffusion of
innovation and technology acceptance, the object of this study is to investigate how municipal officials' perceptions of key attributes of green infrastructure influence their attitudes toward
adoption. In addition, this dissertation provide useful insights into the relationship between the diversity of green infrastructure tools that local jurisdictions across the US support with policies or programs, and the factors influencing
adoption.
A key feature of this study is a nationwide survey conducted among US city stormwater managers, planners and other public officials, whose responses were combined with secondary data and analyzed using multiple regression techniques. Findings indicate that municipal officials' perceptions of relative advantage, compatibility, trialability, and perceived resources are significant predictor of favorable disposition toward
adoption, while perceived risk has a negative influence on attitudes. In addition, the level of environmental awareness and support has the greatest impact on the number of green infrastructure strategies jurisdictions have adopted. Based on the analysis in this study, proponents of green stormwater infrastructure will be better prepared to promote diffusion of these strategies at the local level.

▼ The purpose of this study is to investigate which factors that influence cloud adoption and contribute to existing research about cloud computing. Ten hypotheses were derived from the Technological, Organizational, and Environmental (TOE) framework combined with the Diffusion of Innovation (DOI) framework. Data was collected using a questionnaire and 91 individuals working in several industries and different countries participated in the study. The research model was tested using a quantitative approach using partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM). The main factors that were identified as drivers for adoption of cloud computing are: digital strategy, competitive pressure, trading partner support, standardization, firm size and network and collaboration. These findings have important implications and great value to the research field, companies and cloud providers as they could formulate better strategies for a successful cloud adoption. The study also provides a new approach in research about cloud adoption where the type of enterprise system migrated to the cloud is taken into consideration. Findings in this study points towards system specific requirements influencing the adoption rate.

▼ The advancement of Information Communication and Technology, especially the vast development of the Internet, which makes information more widely available to more people, has brought changes to the publishing industry. This technological development includes the introduction of electronic information sources such as e-journals and e-books.
The research aimed at investigating the
adoption of views about and use of e-books at the University of Namibia. The research design was exploratory and the study adopted a mixed approach, in which both quantitative and qualitative methods were used. Data collection was done through administering questionnaires, a focus group discussion and observation, combined with think-aloud methods. Both purposive sampling and random sampling techniques were used in selecting respondents.
The results of this study reported a high awareness about e-books by students. The study also revealed frequent general use of e-books. The study further reported that respondents used both the non-library search engines and the library search tool as starting points to search for e-books, with the result that the use of the library provided e-books has not reached any significant level. The study also observed positive attitudes towards e-books by students, as they indicated a preference for e-books over printed books and reported using e-books mainly for course work and research purposes. In identifying factors that hinder the use of e-books, aspects such as slow Internet connections, lack of knowledge (including the awareness and skills required to utilise e-books), limited and/or lack of relevant e-books titles, preference for print, eye strain and difficulty reading on screen, as well as limited computers and lack of e-readers, were identified as major deterrents for the use of e-books. Additionally, the study found that the relative advantage, compatibility, trialability and observability have significant influence on the
adoption of e-books.

Why some innovations succeed and others fail?In the marketing literature, it is widely accepted that the adoption of a new product can be influenced by the phenomenon of social contagion, that is, the phenomenon of imitation of the behavior of other members of the social system. Marketing research was therefore interested to empirically study the impact of social contagion on the adoption of innovations. However, the success of an innovation is not only appreciated by its adoption but also its continued use. Thus, our study looks not only at the first purchase but also the continuity of use of technological innovation. Indeed, consumer behavior analysis in the long run will ensure their satisfaction and sustainability of companies. In order to do so, we had conducted a quantitative study. For this purpose, a research questionnaire was developed and administered to a sample of 593 individuals. The results of analysis with simultaneous equations show the role of opinion leadership and the perceived characteristics of innovation in the behavior of adoption and continuity of use. Our research contributes to the development of knowledge in the field of adoption and diffusion of innovation and leads to a number of managerial recommendations.

▼ The increasing government and consumer interest in, and growing concerns about environmental issues have pressured businesses to adopt eco-innovative measures and activities. These pressures have been felt particularly by the food and drink sector in Scotland, a sector that is of considerable importance to the Scottish economy. To date, few studies have considered the challenges businesses in this sector face with regard to the adoption of eco-innovations. In particular, there has been little research on the challenges faced by the SMEs in the sector and how they are adopting eco-innovations. This study seeks to address this research gap through utilization of the diffusion of innovation theory to explore the adoption of eco-innovations by the Scottish food and drink SMEs. A qualitative survey of the website of 52 businesses was used to collect data and analysed using content analysis to generate five categories of eco-innovations namely; Waste, Energy, GSCM, Carbon and Embedding. This data collected informed the next phase of the research where in-depth interviews was conducted with 18 businesses to understand their eco-innovation adoption processes. The findings revealed two groups of attitudes among the participants namely; the positive and the sceptics. The main motivators to adoption were found to be; moral principles and beliefs, eco-consumer drive, cost saving, legislation and the creation of jobs and new opportunities. The major barriers to eco-innovation were more profound and found to include; non-recyclable waste, non-compliance by suppliers, cost of adoption, lack of interest, the challenge of finding credible and reliable sources, attitudes and behaviours, and a general lack of education and awareness. Using the categorisation of eco-innovations that emerged from the website data analysis, the research developed a scale of greenness reflecting the adoption of eco-innovation along with a classification of adopter types namely; advanced, intermediate and basic adopters. The thesis contributes to the theory of diffusion by illustrating ways to capture and evidence innovation adoption without dependency on the time element and enabled a classification of eco- innovation adopters. The contribution to methodology is viewed from the application of a qualitative approach that enabled the categorisation of the forms of eco-innovation which resulted in the model depicting eco-innovation adoption and the profiling tool for innovation diffusion. Practical contributions are offered to enable businesses to understand their adoption of eco-innovation through the use of the model, adopter type classification and the application of a best practice guide to facilitate adoption. Recommendations for policy, practice and further areas for research are also proposed within the thesis.

▼ Sustainable innovations are observed as a major way by which the ill-effects of the built environment can be avoided or offset. The
adoption of innovations are critical to the society, as they pave the way for further incremental or
radical innovations, depending on the feedback from their users. In this process, the attributes of an
innovation play an important role in its
adoption. The objective of this study was to determine whether observability, one of many attributes of innovations identified in the literature as affecting their
adoption, plays a critical role in the
adoption of sustainable innovations, specifically Rainwater Harvesting Technologies and Strategies (RwHTS). Further, the study aimed to determine whether the use of Building Information Modeling (BIM) resulted in frequent
adoption RwHTS. Last but not least, the study also sought to understand how designers used BIM to enhance the acceptance of RwHTS in capital projects. The stakeholders identified for this study were architectural firms that are geographically located in the southeastern states of the United States, and the study was conducted from their perspective. This study was segregated into two major phases. The first phase involved a survey of 2,200 designers/architects located in seven southeastern states, including Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, Virginia, Maryland, and District of Columbia. The survey questions targeted experiences associated with the implementation of RwHTS and the use of BIM for designing and constructing facilities over the last decade by the architectural firms. Based on the responses received, six firms were purposively selected for Phase II, which involved a case study approach that included meeting with the designers, conducting interviews, understanding general firm policies for capital projects, identifying factors that result in the
adoption of RwHTS, and developing a process-based profile undertaken by the firm to understand how key decisions were made. By the end of this phase the researcher identified the factors that result in the
adoption of RwHTS. In addition, the researcher also found that observability did not emerge as an attribute that played a critical role in the
adoption of RwHTS, in comparison to the other attributes. The study also found that the current use of BIM did not result in the frequent
adoption of RwHTS. Finally, the study was able to produce a generalized process map that depicted the steps undertaken during the design process for the
adoption of RwHTS in capital projects. This study encompassed the basic principles of sustainability in the built environment,
adoption of
innovation, and Building Information Modeling use within the design industry.

▼ This is a study of the factors that impact on successful innovation adoption in selected industry clusters of Thai SMEs. The objective of this research is to investigate the technological, organisational and environmental factors that contribute to successful innovation adoption in Thai small and medium sized companies in exemplars in the Parawood, Car Materials, First Craft Bangkok, Leather, and Petchkasem Textile and Garment industry clusters in Thailand. This research addresses one major research question: “What are the factors that contribute to the improved business performance of Thai SMEs?†The five business clusters were selected with assistance from government officers in the Thai Ministry of Industry. The government officers suggested these five business clusters as they had been established for over two years and were recognised to have potential for growth. A qualitative approach using in-depth interviews has enabled the researcher to gain a detailed understanding of the factors that impacted on successful innovation adoption and of understanding how SMEs survive in their industry contexts. The research shows that various and differentiated organisational, technological and environmental factors impact on successful innovation adoption in Thai SMEs. The organisational factors identified were: the size of the organisation, organisational culture, organisational structure, management style, and innovation capability. The technological factors that emerged were: relative advantages (benefits) that accrued, design or available technologies, compatibility with the business, and the capacity of their machines. The environmental factors identified were: competition within the industry and the role of information intensities. As expected, the organisational factors are shown to lead to organisational innovation and the technological factors to technological innovation. The research also shows that once an innovation is adopted in an organisation, there is an improvement in understanding how business owners can operate their business at improved levels of performance. This research contributes to our understanding of the nature of Thai SMEs, and specifically the organisational and technological innovation factors that lead to perceptions of successful implementation of innovation leading to improved business performance in Thai SMEs. The research identifies the relationships between organisational innovation and the various types of technology. It shows that product offerings, service development and product development are important in organisational innovation; and that transformation of technology, knowledge management and technology development are important for technological innovation. The research provides the Thai government sector with information about the characteristics and needs of Thai SMEs and will assist the Thai government to develop appropriate policies that better support Thai industries, which will help Thai SMEs survive in the present fiercely competitive environment.

▼ This study explored young people's consumption of and willingness to pay for traditional news websites with both uses and gratifications and diffusion of
innovation theory as theoretical frames. Based on a survey sample of U.S. college students, it revealed similarities and differences among certain groups of adopters. Regression analyses found when aiming for new young readers and potential payers, news producers should focus on addressing needs for surveillance, understanding, and entertainment, give as many people the opportunity to try out the website, and target particularly e-book readers, but avoid those playing a lot of online games. Social media features, expressed through the observability characteristic, were found to still underperform and currently work best for those already engaged with the sites.

▼ Many market research agencies and consulting firms claim the robotics service and consumer market is about to boom. Market reports show there’s a massive, untapped market for robots to be used in commercial spaces such as hotels, restaurants, fast-foods and cruise ships. These spaces could serve as a great stepping stone on the path toward general-purpose home robots by driving scale, volume, and capabilities. However, there is a significant research gap in this field: only few studies are available on the introduction,
adoption and diffusion of service robotics technologies in the hospitality industry. Tactile Robots (TR) is a high-tech startup based in Lecce, Italy, whose go to market strategy is to introduce its autonomous robots for indoor delivery in hotels for performing hotel room service. On one hand, nothing or only few is known regarding what is driving
adoption of robotics technologies in hospitality and about which are the factors that are influencing
adoption. On the other hand, Tactile Robots lacks adequate knowledge about its potential customers and the condition under which they are willing to be delivered value by TR’s innovative robotic solution. The aim of this research is to give recommendations about the design of a viable business model for Tactile Robots by investigating the drivers of
adoption of service robotics technology in hospitality industry, together with factors that are influencing
adoption. Traditional Business Model (BM) design practices and BM ontologies fail in taking into account contextual factors and actors outside the firm specific value chain. In this work, we propose a novel approach to business modeling which, through a first step of empirical research involving different external stakeholders, identifies technology
adoption drivers and factors under the architecture of the theoretical Technology Organization and Environment(TOE) framework. Findings are then organized to structure four case studies that represent the approach with potential customers. Multiple case study analysis provides in depth insights needed to give informed recommendations for business model design for Tactile Robots. The set of recommendations touches primarily three out of nine building blocks of the chosen business model ontology, Business Model Canvas, namely: Target customers, Value proposition and revenue model. Research showed how, in order for service robotics solutions to be successfully introduced to the hospitality market, value propositions should address predominantly the customer facing side of hospitality business. Unlike for industrial settings, robots are not likely to be adopted by players in hospitality for the only purpose of cost reduction and enhanced productivity. They, instead, need to bring significant value to the guest by augmenting the service or providing a superior experience. Furthermore, well renowned international innovative hotel chains seem to be the most suitable target segment for service robotics applications. Finally, due to stringent financial…

▼ The dream that Computing could become a fifth utility (in addition to Water, Gas, Electricity and Telephony) has been addressed by means of a variety of computing paradigms, including Grid Computing and Utility Computing and, most recently, Cloud Computing (CC). This phenomenon is defined in a number of ways, but the most comprehensive and widely-accepted definition was produced by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), which identifies CC as: “a pay-per-use model for enabling available, convenient, on-demand network access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources (e.g., networks, servers, storage, applications, services) that can be rapidly provisioned and released with minimal management effort or service provider interaction”.
CC has rapidly developed and grown in popularity since 2007, to become a very fashionable topic. It has had a significant impact on the IT industry over the past 7 years causing fundamental changes to the way in which IT resources are utilised and has led to the creation of a wide variety of new business models, while garnering interest from both public and private sectors in Australia and in other countries.
According to industrial surveys conducted between 2010 and 2013, Australian organisations have been leaders in the adoption of CC in the Asia-Pacific region. Full access to the findings of these surveys is very expensive, although summary results can be found in IT industry literature. The figures for CC adoption in Australia vary across a number of these surveys, making it difficult to ascertain the level of CC uptake with any confidence – thereby suggesting a need for a soundly-based academic investigation of Australian CC adoption. In addition, none of these industry surveys makes use of any theoretical underpinning or of any models of CC, adding further to the demand for a sound, theoretically-based and unbiased study of the acceptance and use of the CC innovation, as well as its evolution within and across Australian organisations. Moreover, knowledge of the nature and progress of this innovation would add to the understanding of both its opportunities, as well as of the challenges and issues surrounding CC. While widespread adoption of CC seems to be a foregone conclusion, its diffusion rate and adoption methods by the wide variety of organisations around the globe which are looking to CC for solutions to a host of problems are not yet fully understood. This research project, therefore, aims to build a broad picture of the existing state of CC in Australian organisations by investigating the nature, role and diffusion of CC innovation and the changes which have occurred over time.
The project takes the form of a longitudinal study, composed of two ‘snapshots’ of Australia’s CC usage and using an online questionnaire in each of 2012 and 2013 (i.e. 16 months apart) based on the extant academic and industry literature. The target group for both surveys was the CIO’s of Australian organisations or their equivalents (i.e. IT Manager, Technical Support…

▼ Leaders planning for innovative teaching and learning require special decision-making abilities, and need to avoid imposing new technology when organizational members are not well-prepared or integrated into the project plan. The success or failure of an implementation, however, often relies upon leadership-dependent elements that enable or impede the
adoption process. The purpose of this study was to examine the “human”, interpersonal elements of
innovation adoption of a learning management system in a large urban school district. This study asked: Of the teachers who adopt the LMS for teaching and learning, what is different about those who adopt more quickly than others? The research method used a case study approach utilizing recorded and transcribed teacher interviews from ten campuses across a large district in the Southwestern United States. This qualitative study analyzed the data using Rogers’ theory of Diffusion of Innovations, which include motivating and inhibiting factors that affect the
adoption of new learning technologies; some of which are related to leadership decisions, technology, and relative advantage of use. The interviews consisted of guided questions which sought to reveal explanations for or against the
adoption, correlated with Rogers’ perceived attributes. Data was sorted by response and examined for patterns and trends, to reveal ways for leaders to increase not only individual
adoption, but identify organizational obstacles and best practices, as well. Analysis showed that adopters consistently saw the advantages of the LMS through observing peers, trying new pedagogical strategies and tools, and/or believing that digital learning was necessary to prepare students for 21st century learning. This would suggest a need for leadership to focus on providing more opportunities in the future for social interaction and face-to-face training involving the new technology, for teachers to more rapidly adopt and utilize the learning management system.

▼ Research on circular economy in the construction industry is only recently gaining momentum. A circular economy does not produce any waste. The construction sector is the most polluting sector in the Netherlands and uses 50% of the used raw materials. Therefore, circular building methods might decrease the demand on raw materials in the Dutch construction sector. This research aims to identify what factors can stimulate the adoption of circular building methods by the general contractor. In this research a cross-case analysis is conducted with two building projects that aimed to use circular building methods. During the interviews for these case studies, some barriers for the adoption of circular building methods were identified. The six barriers which are mentioned most often are the perception of high costs, limited regulation, lack of a circular business model, unattractive esthetics, negative attitude from actors involved, and lack of integrality within the building process. To have a positive influence on the adoption of circular building methods, and resolve the identified barriers, the general contractor may take the role of an integral manager to manage the social network, supply chain, and building process and facilitate the learning process. When taking this role it is suggested that the general contractor works together with other actors to develop a new business model. This new business model should aim to take away the current barriers for circular building methods. The main difference between any other innovation in the building sector and circular building methods is that circularity needs more integrality. Other innovations are often only on a specific part of the project, it suffices with only changing or managing on a small part of a building project. However, circularity affects every small part of a project and therefore needs an integral manager.

▼ The purpose of this project has been to examine ways in which to increase adoption of a digital employee-facing tool by involving its users in the implementation. This was achieved by examining innovation, adoption and the existing theories around those, looked at through the lens of the company context and corporate challenges. The current implementation process and user involvement were examined, allowing for a comparison of the literature and reality. Studied innovation and adoption theories include the UTAUT model, growth hacking and ADKAR, amongst others. This research revealed that relevance of an innovation to its target group is one of the most important adoption determinants, as well as its ease of use. A combined model is introduced that shows the application of user-centeredness to increase adoption. Considering the existing implementation process includes an agile feedback loop that is focused on cultivating ease of use, a focus on expanding that user involvement is chosen. Expanding it into the decision-making level on the business side of the application’s development creates opportunities to make the decisions more user-centered, causing a trickle-down effect. The design goal is reformulated as “Increasing adoption by representing user input (aided by growth hacking strategies) in the prioritization process for A2H, to help the airline achieve their goal of making operations more efficient and customer-centric through digitalization.” Focusing on this prioritization process revealed some areas for improvement regarding the current way of working, as well as a need for more evidence to support decisions. Intersecting this opportunity with the user involvement goal of the project led to the development of a framework that allows for the collection of direct user input to provide evidence for decision-making. Additionally, studies and interviews were conducted to establish whether user input in the prioritization session would yield different results than the current way of working, and it was found to have influence on the decisions made. This framework, the ‘User Value Framework’, was established using insights from contextmapping, observations and interviews. It includes an intervention that supports the process of collecting user input to be used in the prioritization session. It is presented as part of a strategy to increase UX maturity in the company and move toward more explorative research and user-driven business. To achieve this, it includes a validation and expansion strategy over the long term to accommodate in-between proof of value of user-centeredness. Additionally, recommendations are made for the different levels of UX maturity beyond the presented intervention, resulting from the observations and research results.

▼ This study investigated the influence of Internet users’ demographic characteristics (age, income, education, gender, and race) and on-line characteristics (Internet experience, Internet connectedness, and access location) on their adoption
of online transactions (on-line shopping, on-line financial services, and on-line auctions). A model based on the diffusion of innovations theory was proposed to explain such influence. Logistic regression was used to analyze the independent variables’
effects on the dependent variables. Income, education, race, access location, on-line experience, and how connected the user felt to the Internet were significant in explaining Internet users’ shopping on-line. Education, on-line experience, and how
connected the user felt to the Internet were significant in explaining Internet users’ adoption of on-line financial services. Gender, age, on-line experience, and how connected the user felt to the Internet were significant in explaining Internet users’
adoption of on-line auctions.
Subjects/Keywords: On-line shopping; adoption of on-line financial services; adoption of on-line auctions; diffusion of innovation.

▼ Over the course of history, innovation has been the forefront of industrial change. New innovations have continuously surpassed old solutions, which have contributed to the trajectory of mankind. In today’s market IT has an increasingly important role. Innovation within IT is characterised by high degrees of visionary thinking and optimism towards the success of the venture. This has contributed to bubble effects emerging in the economy of a highly speculative nature. A central issue lies in the complexity of evaluating innovation and especially more radical and visionary ones. In general terms of evaluation, innovations are evaluated in two main phases: internally and externally. For visionary innovations it is not evident how and on what grounds the innovation should be evaluated both internally in terms of feasibility and externally in terms of market response. In that aspect there is a gap in evaluation and especially how visionary innovation can be evaluated. The aim of the research is to investigate the phenomenon of visionary innovation and contribute with knowledge about the characteristics that influence growth and adoption. The research is based upon a two-step qualitative investigation. Firstly the research is imed at constructing a framework for evaluating the innovation and thereafter objectifying the characteristics on case studies within the IT sector. The research has found three major areas for evaluation: (1) the eco-system, (2) the ustomer behaviour and (3) the target market. The eco-system is focused towards the ompetitive environment, the technology and the infrastructure. The customer behaviour ddresses customers’ existing behaviours, their needs and demands and the surplus value he new offering brings. In terms of the customer behaviour the switching costs and benefits of other alternatives is also important to consider. Finally, the target market onsists of the market characteristics, the customer segmentation and the overall ttractiveness of the market. Based on the characteristics of these factors and the market nd industry, constraints and drivers can be identified to either support or contradicts the peed of adoption of new solutions. The main findings of the report are that growth is dependent on and influenced by positive and negative drivers. The three elements the drivers are thus connected and correlating, in the sense that the drivers can have different levels of severity. For instance, a negative driver that is negatively correlated with another element has a high level of severity related to growth.

▼ The purpose of this multiple comparative case study was to examine why and how an intensive academic-orientation
innovation was diffused and adopted at five different public research universities. The
innovation under study was the Louisiana State University (LSU) Biology Intensive Orientation for Students (BIOS) program. Everett Rogers’ (2003) diffusion of
innovation theory served as the theoretical framework for this study. Program documentation was collected and reviewed, an on-line survey was administered and completed by each program coordinator/director, and telephone interviews were conducted with each program coordinator/director. The study found there was relative fidelity in the
adoption of BIOS and supported the presence of Rogers’ (2003)
innovation attributes. A model was developed through this study to describe a successful
innovation adoption process; essential elements, roles, and relationships were identified. Key findings of the study included the following: (a) need for a catalyst that the
innovation addressed and impacted in a positive way; (b) a credible change agent, who was available to share knowledge about the
innovation; (c) a champion, who was committed to the successful
adoption of the
innovation; and (d) an opinion leader, who supported the
innovation adoption. The model further indicates there must be a productive and positive working relationship between the change agent and the champion, as well as an established positive working relationship between the champion and opinion leader. Discontinuation of the
innovation adoption is possible if there is a change in opinion leadership or a less complex or less costly solution to the initial catalyst is discovered.

▼ The paradigm of diffusion research can be traced back all the way to the 1940s when Ryan and Gross investigated the diffusion of hybrid seed among farmers in Iowa. Since the 1960s diffusion research has been applied in a wide variety of disciplines, for instance, to study the diffusion of the Internet and the non-diffusion of the Dvorak keyboard. Currently, the technologies that are on top of the Gartner Hype Cycle are all associated with Artificial Intelligence (AI), which shortly can be defined as learning devices that perceive their environment and take actions to maximize their success at some goal. Consequently, some people suggest that the current hype surrounding AI can be the end of the human kind, while others believe it will give way for millions of fresh jobs and cleverer decision-making. In recent years both media and political organizations have shown great interest in AI. In addition, the industry is captivated by the potential uses of AI. In the last years, AI-related companies in the US have raised billions of dollars in the stock market together with a large number of acquisitions. The large flow of capital into AI technology underpins the fast development of AI solutions. The purpose of this study is to investigate how groups approach AI. What can be concluded after reviewing different sectors is that organizations seem to share a common interest of AI. Furthermore, organizations share the opinion that eventually AI will be a more natural part of their processes. Organizations investing a larger share of their budget in R&D have a longer experience of using AI and are currently doing projects utilizing more advanced technologies within AI. In organizations from other sectors, the investments in AI depend on the people with the authority to invest money in projects and their view on AI. Organizations generally seem to approach AI in a similar way. Firstly, they evaluate what AI is. Secondly, they find areas to make small iterative PoC-projects utilizing AI, usually with machine learning. Finally, more money is invested if the PoC-projects were successful and the organization starts looking at how to acquire more competence within the area to fully exploit the value of AI.

Even though hubs are not necessarily opinion leaders nor are they
necessarily innovators (as described by Rogers, (1962)) they tend
to adopt earlier in the diffusion process. Innovator hubs have a
greater impact on speed of
adoption whilst Follower hubs have
greater impact on the size of the market or total number of

adoption
behaviour of hubs can be a useful predictor of future product
success. Among BOP network nodes, relationships and trust are
important in determining the amount or degree of influence one can
exert on a fellow network member. Homogeneity increases trust which
in turn impacts the role of a hub as a force of influence. The
centrality of hubs to networks is also a factor behind their role
as information to the rest of the network passes through them, to a
degree giving them control over the dissemination of information.

as information to the rest of the network passes through them, to a
degree giving them control over the dissemination of information.

▼ Breakthrough innovations are strikingly unfamiliar additions to everyday life, and novel technologies encounter significant barriers en route toward successful commercialization and widespread acceptance within a given society. This dissertation examines popular humor as a distinctive form of adaptive discourse that communities engage in as they negotiate the potential domestication of a breakthrough
innovation. The link between popular humor and collective-level responses to breakthrough innovations is explored via a theory-building, in-depth historical case analysis of major joke cycles during the introduction of the automobile (1897-1929). Analysis of 2,627 jokes, supplemental cultural ephemera, and contemporaneous media accounts reveals the significance of humor as distinctive form of discourse and demonstrates how popular humor can facilitate evolving acceptance of a previously resisted breakthrough technology. In sum, this study extends our understanding of social, cultural, and emotional processes that influence the trajectories of
radical innovations, draws attention to collective-level, identity-based forces embedded in the rhythms of everyday life that influence the acceptance or rejection of breakthrough innovations, and introduces humor as a mechanism for negotiating the meaning of novel technologies in society.

▼ When compared to other industries, the construction industry has been slow to adopt digital technologies. BIM stands for Building Information Modeling (hereon referred to as BIM) and it represents a turning point when it comes to digitalization in the AEC sector. Despite BIM’s proven potential to reduce costs and improve the efficiency of construction projects, widescale adoption, and implementation of construction projects using BIM hasn’t happened yet. This research aims to conduct an innovation analysis of adoption of BIM in Europe using innovation theories such as Rogers’s diffusion theory and Crossing the Chasm by Moore. We hope the reader will have an understanding of the various adoption barriers for BIM in Europe after reading this research paper.
