1. Ramos, Carlos Eduardo.

Degree: Mestrado, Psicologia Escolar e do Desenvolvimento Humano, 2012, University of São Paulo

The starting point of the current research is the notion that the educational programmes adopted by several private higher education institutions, which correspond to the industrial and technicist models of the administered society, may in turn oppress and restrict lecturers and professors and their roles as educators. The interests of such institutions which see education as a business in accordance with present educational policies affect not only their educational activities but also the formation of the individuals that constitute…

2. Gilliland, Tamara. Marriage Moments: A New Approach to Strengthening Couples' Relationship Through the Transition to Parenthood.

Degree: MS, 2003, Brigham Young University

Strengthening marriages is important to the well-being of individuals, families and communities. The transition to parenthood brings with it particular risks and opportunities for marriage relationships, yet no interventions have been successful in accessing a large number of couples during this critical time prepare and strengthen them for the challenges of becoming parents. The healthcare system has an established education infrastructure (childbirth education) that interacts with a significant number of couples during the transition to parenthood and has become increasingly open to incorporating relationship strengthening efforts into existing programs. The Marriage Moments program was designed to access couples through this system. This new approach to marriage education employs a program design unique in three ways: the context of childbirth education, a low-intensity content based on a model of marital virtues, and a simple, self-administered format of materials that gives the program great flexibility and transportability that can be implemented in a variety of existing systems. Initial formative program evaluation data show that the program is well received by participating couples. Marriage Moments is currently being pilot tested to evaluate its effectiveness in strengthening marriage through the transition, but it is expected the program will be disseminated widely and reach numerous couples as they transition to parenthood.

3. Hornstein, Sarah Shoshana. On Alienation and Imperialism: Synthesizing the Work of Herbert Marcuse and Samir Amin.

Degree: PhD, Sociology, 2019, York University

This dissertation builds on the idea that there is much to be gained by bringing Western Marxism and Marxist theories of imperialism into engagement with each other through synthesis of the work of two key figures: Herbert Marcuse and Samir Amin. Using Marcuse to supplement Amin (and vice versa) provides for a more complete understanding of capitalist imperialism on a world scale. This lends Marcuse an applicability/relevance currently denied to him while also allowing for an updating of his theory that accounts for changes in the operation of capitalism since his time. It also enhances Amins work insofar as it can be used to augment his analysis of the capitalist centres and their relation to the periphery. A key objective of the analysis this dissertation undertakes is to produce a more robust theoretical approach capable of increasing our understanding of the world and positioning us to better meet the challenges posed for human emancipation from an exploitative, alienated existence of suffering. Chapter 1 provides the necessary background for engaging with both Amins and Marcuses analyses of alienation by focusing on the work of Marx, Lukcs, and Freud. Chapter 2 engages in explicit discussion of Amins analysis of the world capitalist system and its development. Chapter 3 is concerned with Marcuses work and begins with discussion of the emergence of one dimensional thinking and technological rationality before turning to Marcuses analysis of alienation. The final chapter demonstrates the compatibility of Amins and Marcuses analyses and concludes by pointing toward some possibilities for future research. Advisors/Committee Members: Anderson, Karen (advisor).
