▼ This thesis concerns the role of disability and assistive devices in everyday life among persons with, for instance, impairments related to mobility (e.g. wheelchair users) and bodily shape and configuration (e.g. dysmelia). Assistive devices are seen as both includators (assisting participation and emancipation) and excludators (limiting participation, restraining empowerment, and stigmatizing). Perspectives include, for instance, stigmatisation, body-image, coping, empowerment, agency, motivation, needs, and everyday life. Use of assistive devices is discussed from the ValMO-model: Value and Meaning in Human Occupations. The discussion concerns the useworthiness, as opposed to usability, of assistive devices from a perspective of not only physics-based effectiveness (Newton), but also from a self-image and agency perspective based on habitus (Bourdieu). In study I, the experience of prescription of active rigid-frame ultra light-weight wheelchairs was reported, using data on 278 prescribers in Sweden. Prescribers emphasised self-image, design, appearance and aesthetics. Even though prescribers want to prescribe an optimal wheelchair, they may lack the possibility to do so due to: (1) lack of practice and specialized knowl-edge; and (2) narrow regulations, both pertaining to municipal political decisions. Study II describes the experience of active wheelchairs and societal provision thereof utilizing thematic qualitative content analysis of eleven interviews with experienced users in Sweden. Results showed users experiencing injustice and unfairness negoti-ating wheelchair needs in terms of physical and social functioning (agency); changes of attitudes/organization are suggested. Study III was grounded theory study that showed an adaptation of stigma-handling strategies to situations in everyday life by women aged 20 to 30 with dysmelia, i.e. upper limb reduction deficiency. Strategies were comprehensive patterns of action aimed at controlling information about one’s status as deviating from a contextual normality. A proofing or being attitude consti-tuted a contextual adaptation understood in terms of a concealing or revealing tactic, aiming at delaying or promoting exposure to contextual attitudes and possible prejudices. If exposure was delayed, a person with dysmelia blended in. Exposure could be voluntary or imposed. After exposure, the relative importance of TULRD in the specific context could decrease, thus a boost of an amplification or altering of the attitude, i.e. boost was the interactional outcome enforcing the choice of strategy in another context.

▼ Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) systems are being used in numerous applications such as transportation ticketing, animal tracking, supply chain management, medical records, electronic passports and identity cards. These systems consist of three main components, namely: server, reader and tag. A tag is a small microchip with antenna attached to an item which needs identification. A reader scans a tag(s) and collects the identification information. This information is then passed on to a server by the reader for further operations. Providing security and preserving privacy of these systems come with a cost. In sensitive applications such as e-passports, the embedded tags are resourceful enough to accommodate standard cryptographic functionality. These resourceful tags are high-cost. However in the most widely deployed RFID systems, such as in supply chain management of daily consumer goods, it is not feasible to use such high-cost tags. Therefore the tags used in these applications are low-cost tags which are constrained in their resources. Since these tags cannot afford the luxury of conventional cryptographic primitives, low-cost RFID systems are prone to both passive as well as active adversaries. Some of the typical threats related to an RFID system include tag cloning, impersonation, replay, relay, de-synchronization, DoS, content privacy leakage, tracing and tracking attacks, etc. Therefore it is imperative to think out of the box to provide security and privacy to these low-cost RFID systems. This thesis makes six contributions in this regard. In the first and second contribution, very basic low-cost tags are considered. These tags are very constrained with respect to their resources. To secure such tags, researchers have proposed ultra-lightweight mutual authentication protocols (UMAPs). First we demonstrate multiple attacks in detail on two of such UMAPs. Then we carry out analysis of existing UMAPs and highlight weaknesses. We also propose a new UMAP which overcomes the weaknesses of existing discussed schemes. The next three contributions focus on the most widely used application of RFID systems, supply chain management. This application generally uses a standard EPC-global Class-1 Gen-2 (EPCC1G2). We contribute by first proposing a scheme which provides security and privacy to tagged items throughout a supply chain cycle with online as well as offline readers. Then we focus our work on the counterfeit problem in supply chain management, which causes huge losses to businesses. We propose a hierarchical anti-counterfeit mechanism to counter the problem of counterfeiting during the supply chain cycle. Finally we devise a framework to provide an anti-counterfeiting feature to individual customers who cannot afford the luxury of standard readers and access to a back-end database server. ▼ In bridge deck concrete, early-age cracking can lead to substantial serviceability and structural integrity issues over the lifespan of the bridge. An understanding of the temperature, stress, and strength development of concrete can aid determining the early-age cracking susceptibility. This project, funded by the Texas Department of Transportation, evaluated these properties for various bridge deck materials and mixture proportions. The research presented in this thesis involved a laboratory testing program that used a combination of semi-adiabatic calorimetry, rigid cracking frame, free shrinkage frame, and match cured cylinder testing program that allowed the research team to simulate the performance of common bridge deck mixture designs under hot and cold weather conditions. In this program, the semi-adiabatic calorimetry was used, with previously generated models, to generate the temperature profile of the mixture. The rigid cracking frame and free shrinkage frame were used to evaluate the restrained stress development and the unrestrained volume changes, respectively, under the simulated temperatures. The match-cure cylinder testing program allowed the research team to generate a strength development profile for the concrete mixtures under the various simulated temperature profiles. Results from the laboratory program revealed that in hot weather simulations, ground granulated blast furnace slag mixtures developed the lowest stress / strength ratios, and in cold weather simulations, Class F fly ash mixtures developed the lowest stress / strength ratios. In general, use of SCMs and limestone coarse aggregate results in mixtures that generate less heat and lower stress / strength ratios. Isothermal testing showed that shrinkage reducing admixtures were effective in reducing early-age strains from chemical shrinkage. In addition to the laboratory testing program, a field testing program was completed to measure the temperature development of four bridge decks during the winter and summer months. The recorded concrete temperatures and the effects of the environmental conditions at the time of the pour will aid in the calibration and validation of the temperature prediction component of ConcreteWorks for bridge deck construction. In addition, experience gained through these field pours resulted in an optimized instrumentation procedure that will aid in the successful collection of data in future projects. A utilização de concreto leve decorre especialmente dos benefícios promovidos pela redução da massa específica do material, tais como menores esforços nas estruturas, economia com fôrmas e cimbramento, além de diminuição dos custos com transporte e montagem de construções pré-fabricadas. Atualmente, além das questões técnicas e econômicas, a escolha dos materiais de construção deve levar em conta os aspectos ambientais. Portanto, o uso de poliestireno expandido (EPS) na produção de concreto pode abrir portas para o emprego de resíduos de materiais dessa natureza, e ainda usufruir de sua baixa massa específica nas aplicações estruturais. Este trabalho teve como objetivo determinar as principais características do concreto leve com pérolas (esferas) de EPS, também conhecido como Concreto Ultraleve® ou Concreflex®, características essas necessárias para projetar elementos estruturais, e analisar o comportamento de lajes produzidas com esse novo material. Mais especificamente, foram determinadas características mecânicas, tais como: resistência à compressão, módulo de elasticidade e resistência à tração, na compressão diametral e na flexão, além de características de deformação de longo prazo, como retração e fluência. Também foi determinada a massa específica e avaliada sua relação com as características mecânicas, além dos ensaios de modelos de lajes unidirecionais produzidas com esse concreto. Para analisar a possibilidade de aplicação prática do concreto leve com EPS em lajes, foram elaboradas tabelas para pré-dimensionamento de lajes unidirecionais e bidirecionais com o novo material, nas quais essas lajes foram comparadas com as de concreto comum. Com base no procedimento experimental e nos resultados dos ensaios, o objetivo de determinar as características necessárias para projetar elementos estruturais de Concreto Leve com EPS foi alcançado. Pode-se ainda afirmar que o concreto estudado, com aproximadamente metade da massa específica dos concretos convencionais, apresenta características compatíveis com a produção e o uso comercial de lajes maciças, principalmente pré-moldadas, o que pode ser estendido a outros elementos que não necessitem de concretos com resistência muito alta. Também foi avaliado o comportamento de modelos de lajes de concreto leve com poliuretano (PU), de maneira semelhante ao estudo realizado com EPS, incluindo a caracterização do concreto de cada modelo. Para complementar a análise de desempenho do concreto leve com EPS, apresentou-se um estudo de carbonatação, que comprovou a excelente condição desse novo material com relação à durabilidade.

▼ Composites are used in lightweight structural designs. In this dissertation, a robust carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) space frame chassis for a lightweight electric tricycle is produced. In large, most composite research is directed toward flat laminates rather than closed sections. This dissertation addresses the complexities of stresses at joints and buckling (local and global). The space frame design consists of two segments of iterations. The second and more important segment is based on optimisation using NX Nastran finite element analysis (FEA). The final design incorporates the use of steel sleeves to address stress concentrations at joins and local buckling. The design and execution of a new test method was developed to validate FEA results. The test method involves applying compressive stress on tubes fabricated using unidirectional (UD) fibre set at 35°, to induce compressive and shear stresses along the primary fibres. In this way, four major failure criteria were compared: Tsai-Wu, Hoffman, Hill and Maximum Strain. The Hoffman and Tsai-Wu criteria were shown to be accurate and conservative. The Hill criteria showed inaccuracy by having incorrectly high strength ratios, while the Maximum Strain criteria had the highest strength ratio, proving to be the least conservative and most inaccurate. ▼ During the early stages of the construction process of a building, the potential impact of design decisions is at its greatest. One of the reasons is the lack of computational tools at these stages. The main objective of this research project was the expansion of StructuralComponents by the development of a parametric real-time computational tool prototype to quickly determine the feasibility of mid-rise buildings designs with rigid frames as stability members. A study of rigid frames behaviour was performed to define a range of applicability of the existing analytical representation and to develop two new methods to analytically represent rigid frames behaviour: a correction method for the shear beam representation and a method based on the Timoshenko beam theory. To allow for vertical connections of different rigid frame geometries, an analytical method to consider a different stiffness along the height was developed. The results showed that the analytical shear beam representation of rigid frames has a reduced range of applicability for parametric purposes. This reduced applicability is due to the combined shear and bending behaviour. The correction method follows from the prediction of the error when using the shear beam representation. In addition to the correction of the shear beam representation, the prediction of the error was defined as a parameter to classify the behaviour of a rigid frame as a shear, flexural or combined type. Both, the applicability range and the correction method are based on analytical and numerical comparisons, as well as the performed validations. The implemented software comprises Maplesoft to get the analytical solutions and Grasshopper with Karamba3D (which contains the finite element solver) to get the numerical solutions. The method based on the Timoshenko beam theory comes from the theoretical derivations of a serial system that takes into account both, bending and shear deformations. It was found that it is more appropriate to analytically represent the general behaviour of rigid frames with the Timoshenko beam theory and by additionally considering a different stiffness calculation for the ground floor. Also, it was shown that the vertical connections of rigid frame geometries can be addressed with the calculation of an analytical solution for each different geometry along the height. Both analytical approaches, the Timoshenko beam representation and the method for vertical connections were implemented in the tool prototype. Such a tool consists of a calculation method to assess the structural performance of a building by the simultaneous structural analysis of every rigid frame subjected to a lateral load. The three main characteristics of the tool prototype are the parametric adaptability, the instantaneous display of results and the stacking “Lego-type” connection between components. Sendo a reabilitação um processo de grande importância na construção civil em Portugal, a escolha dos materiais a utilizar é um parâmetro fulcral devido ao impacto que terá na estrutura pré-existente. Atualmente no mercado existem soluções alternativas ao betão armado, aço enformado a quente ou vigotas pré-esforçadas, tais como a madeira ou o aço enformado a frio. Estes últimos materiais, permitem soluções construtivas leves, com baixo peso especifico quando comparadas com as soluções tradicionais. Neste trabalho, foram inventariadas soluções construtivas leves disponíveis no mercado em Portugal, tendo sido comparado o custo e peso por área com as soluções tradicionais. Adicionalmente, foi estudado o comportamento acústico das soluções construtivas leves através de métodos comuns (lei da massa) e alternativos (método de Sharp e Meisser), assim como uma comparação dos resultados obtidos nos diferentes métodos. Foi possível identificar que as soluções leves, de madeira e aço, possuem um peso por metro quadrado bastante inferior a qualquer solução tradicional, na ordem dos 20%. No comportamento acústico, não foi possível chegar aos valores de estimativa acústica propostos nos pavimentos em madeira. Todos os autores analisados proponham valores de isolamento acústico bastante altos, valores estes que não se aproximam dos valores estimados. Por outro lado, os valores do isolamento acústico nos pavimentos em LSF foram muito próximos dos propostos. Os pavimentos leves são a solução mais apropriada para obras de reabilitação, devido ao seu peso por metro quadrado, logo, menor esforço/carga nas paredes resistentes.

Being the rehabilitation a process with a big importance in portuguese civil construction, the choice the ideal materials to be used is a major parameter due to, the impact that would have in the pre-existent construction. Currently, the market has alternative solutions to the concrete, the lightweight precast concrete or the traditional steel joints such as the light steel frame or the wood. These last materials, provide lightweight construction solutions, with a low specific weight when compared with the traditional solutions. In this document, there had been compiled lightweight constructive solutions available in the Portuguese market, and then compared the price and weight with the traditional solutions. Moreover, it had been studied the acoustic performance of the lightweight solutions through the common methods (law of mass) and the alternatives (Sharp method and Meisser method), and then the obtained results were compared. It was possible to identify that the lightweight solutions, wood and light steel frame, have a weight per square meter significantly low when compared with any traditional solution (20% of the weight. It was not possible to reach the estimated values suggested for the wood floor. ▼ This thesis provides a representation of a low-cost rigid-frame exoskeleton glove that is used to track finger-joint flexion mapped onto a robotic hand to mimic user movements. The overall setup consists of an exoskeleton glove (exo-glove), sensors, a microcontroller, and a telerobotic hand. The design of the exo-glove is crafted to fit onto a left hand. SolidWorks was used for the prototype designs which were then sent to the Stratasys 400 rapid prototyping machine to be 3D printed in ABS-M30 plastic. The exo-glove houses five rotary position sensors and three flexible sensors to track angle changes of the finger joints from two fingers and a thumb. Five low-pass filters are implemented as signal filtering for the rotary position sensors. An Arduino Mega microcontroller is connected to the sensors of the exo-glove and processes the input values. Using an open-loop controller to control the robotic hand, the values processed by the microcontroller from the exo-glove are sent to the servo motors on the robotic hand to operate the corresponding fingers of the user. Throughout the initial calibration and testing phase, each sensor was tested individually to ensure the sensor functionally performs well. Signal analysis was conducted on the sensors at steady state and while in operation to show fluctuations in sensor readings and response to finger flexion. Experimental results show that averaging sensor data in the processing code yields smoother values and better precision. Due to the use of low-pass filtering with the rotary position sensors, the data sets collected were grouped together tightly compared to the flex sensors without filtering. However, the actual angles measured were not accurately portrayed in sensor readings. The true flexion angles were compared in the data samplings to find a variety of ranges spanning around the angles desired to track. Many of the actual flexion angles were offset from the sensor readings by a variation of degrees, but the data shows the sensor readings were able to follow the general magnitude of the true flexion angles. The precision seen in the data was also apparent in the robotic hand mirroring the posture. Changes in sensor readings caused jerking movements to occur in the robotic fingers but were able to maintain an overall flexion mirroring of the RF exo-glove. There is quarter-second delay between the exo-glove sensor reading and the robotic hand mirroring capability when not implementing averaging. When averaging the sensor values, there was a delay of more than half a second between the exo-glove posture and robotic hand mirroring. ▼ Control of early-age cracking in concrete structures due to restrained deformation, thermal and/or autogenous, presents a major durability challenge for state highway agencies. This study details research conducted on improving the early-age cracking resilience of plain concrete and supplementary cementitious materials (SCM) blended concrete. Three specific areas, within concrete structural elements, with high incidence of early-age cracking are addressed: High early-age strength (HES) concrete mixtures used in slab-replacement of Jointed Plain Concrete Pavements (JPCP) Use of metakaolin (MK) in bridge deck mixtures Use of slag blended concrete, at high cement replacement levels, in massive structural elements Three cracking mitigation measures were evaluated for HES concrete mixtures; namely, aggregate blend optimization, use of pre-wetted lightweight aggregate and the use of shrinkage-reducing admixture. While all methods reduced early-age induced tensile stresses and indicated lower cracking tendencies, mixtures with lower cement content had the lowest tensile stress to strength ratio, while meeting the 6-hour strength thresholds. The use of internal curing by incorporating pre-wetted lightweight aggregate (LWA) to reduce early-age cracking tendencies of MK-blended concrete was evaluated. The findings indicate a lower cracking temperature and a lower tensile stress/strength ratio at 48 hours when LWA was used in MK blended concrete mixtures. Limited dilatometry testing for chemical shrinkage indicated a shrinkage coefficient of 0.28 ml/g MK. The performance of five commercial slags with varying chemical, mineralogical and physical properties, typically used in massive concrete elements, was evaluated for early-age cracking tendencies at 60% replacement level. The mixtures were prepared using two cements having different C3A content. Cracking indices obtained from the rigid cracking frame testing under uniaxial restraint correlated well with magnesia to alumina ratio of slag, with a lower MgO/Al2O3 ratio correlating with a higher cracking tendency. A limited assessment of the long-term durability of these mixtures was conducted through measuring concrete surface resistivity and apparent chloride diffusivity. Three concrete mixtures were prepared; namely, control, slag blended concrete with low alumina slag (8%) and another slag blended mixture with high alumina slag (16%). The total chloride concentration profiles, obtained using ASTM C1556 methodology at 105 days of immersion in 165g/L NaCl solution, indicated better performance of the low alumina slag concrete mixture compared to the high alumina slag concrete or the control. Similarly, resistivity measurements and calculated formation factors were higher for the slag blended systems compared to the control systems, indicating a more disconnected pore structure and therefore higher resistance to chloride ingress. By acknowledging the semi-rigidity of nominal pin joints, steel frames can be designed as semi-continuous in which the beam bending moments are partially transmitted to the column members and the need for lateral bracing is eliminated, thus reducing material and construction costs. This thesis presents the results of numerical and theoretical studies of the behaviour of bolted endplate connections to Rectangular Hollow Section (RHS) columns using flowdrill bolts and their applications in semi-continuous frame design. Such connections exhibit significant levels of initial stiffness, strength, and deformation capacity while being more cost-effective than fully welded connections. Despite this, there is limited theoretical work carried out that allows such connections to be designed using analytical methods. In addition, there are no standardised connection design tables like that for open section columns (SCI, 1995), thereby inhibiting their adoption in practice. In this thesis, newly derived equations for initial stiffness that have a greatly improved range of validity and accuracy over existing equations are presented. Equations for bending strength of a newly derived elliptical mechanism based on yield line theory and for membrane action based on internal work principles are given. Equations for flowdrill thread stripping due to gross deformation of the RHS face are also presented thus allowing prediction of all common RHS face failure mechanisms. Equations for deformation capacity are derived thus making it possible to predict the full load-deflection behaviour of the RHS face in tension component. When combined with existing equations for bolt and endplate components, it is possible to predict the full moment-rotation behaviour of bolted endplate connections to RHS columns. Extensive parametric studies using finite element analysis (FEA) as well as validation against existing tests show that the newly derived equations can accurately predict the component-level and whole joint behaviour for a wide range of configurations. Taking advantage of the initial stiffness properties that these connections offer, a parametric study is conducted to show that connections with relatively simple detailing can offer sufficient initial stiffness and strength to enable unbraced semi-continuous design of low-rise steel frames. A hand calculation method for SLS sway in semi-continuous frames is also presented thus allowing the designer to readily carry out scheme designs without advanced software knowledge. A systematic method for the detailing of these connections for use in unbraced frame design is presented to facilitate adoption in practice.

▼ The concept of culture has become pervasive in the description of social reality. Its role in determining the relations between social groups seems to have acquired a position of prominence in particular after the attacks of September 11th, 2001. Some authors argue that this event confirms the thesis of the thesis of the clash of civilization advanced by Huntington in 1993. In this light, culture assumes a central role as cause of conflicts. The present work aims to observe how the concept of culture is used in media communication about conflicts in order to determine if and how it is used as an explanation of the genesis of the conflict. The concept of culture is polysemous and the problem of its definition has concerned a large number of scientific disciplines for over a century. This uncertainty is reflected in public and media discourse, making the use of the term extremely problematic. This work aims to present and analyze the different meanings of the term developed in anthropology and sociology and to provide an operational definition of the term that can be used in the empirical analysis of social reality. The central theoretical position adopted is that of frame and frame analysis. This approach is currently widely used in media research, but the field is fragmented with different positions and conflicting theories that tend to coexist. One of the aims will thus be to systematize the theoretical research on frame from its beginnings to the latest proposals. The empirical part is focused on an inductive methodological approach based on framing analysis of television newscasts. A specific protocol of analysis has been developed and applied to the evening news of BBC news, CNN, RAI and TSI during the conflict in Afghanistan in 2001 and Iraq in 2003. The objective is to identify the different media frames present in the reporting of these events and determine the specific role that culture has in these reports.
