▼ A social innovation is a novel solution to a social problem that is more effective, efficient, sustainable for which the value created accrues primarily to society as a whole rather than private individuals. Social innovations come in various forms such as (1) doing something good in/for society; (2) changing social practices and/or structure, (3) contribute to urban and community development and (4) re-organize work processes. In an aging world where life expectancy is steadily increasing and there is decline in the number of children and in total fertility the consequences for the healthcare system and the elder population are significant; therefore, social innovations are needed (in the form of changed social practices) aiming to reduce healthcare costs and improve the life quality of those aging. Smart Homes / Smart Living serve goals of wellbeing of the residents of the home and eldercare among others. Thus, the realization of these goals could be considered as a potential social innovation for eldercare in specific. However, these products and services in this domain are generally unknown by the general public – so potential consumers lack of awareness of the potential benefits that smart home products can help them realize. Thus, a social innovation is proposed in the context of health and wellbeing through the design of a smart living multi-sided digital platform. This platform is a mean to improve the lives of citizens in the context of health and wellbeing, especially for those aging through information access, information exchange around Smart Living products/services, interaction with the relatives/community/neighborhood as well as with caretakers. The focus of a solution in this work is on the group of end-users of elders and voluntary caretakers. From previous research foundational requirements were identified for the platform: 1) an online community for contact, solutions, social wellbeing, interaction with the neighborhood and a digital marketplace for applications; 2) an information exchange platform, between providers and end-users (business to consumer), 3) a portal for bundled, services and solutions (business to consumer) and 4) an intervention instrument for the municipality (government to consumer). Through two workshops and considerable work within the project team 9 requirements and 3 critical issues were identified. The requirements derived were built into a prototype (mockup) which was also built into a clickable model for its evaluation through usability testing with potential end-users. 100% of the participants agreed that they would use or recommend the platform if available and 4 out of 6 participants rated 4 or 5 in a scale of 1 to 5 the user experience of the artifact. Some issues regarding the navigation in two functionalities were pointed for improvement. ▼ In the last years, Floating Car Data (FCD) has risen as a technology that has the potential to replace legacy sensors, reduce associated installation and maintenance costs and offer new possibilities in the field of traffic management. FCD refers to the use of sources such as in-vehicle systems with network connectivity or road users’ mobile phones to collect relevant traffic information (e.g. vehicle speed or intensity). There is extensive literature on the feasibility of using FCD for traffic management purposes and on the added value of fusing legacy sensors data with FCD. These studies have been mostly experimental and a literature review shows that there is no academic work on how to deploy and integrate legacy sensors data and FCD in an actual live setting. This research aims to fill that gap by designing a flexible ICT Architecture that integrates FCD into Rijkswaterstaat’s Traffic Management and Information Systems. Taking an architecture point of view to address this challenge is not only novel but also appropriate because it provides a comprehensive view of what changes need to take place at different levels of the organization (business, information systems and technology) for this to happen. This research follows a design science research approach, where four main phases can be distinguished: (1) Problem formulation, (2) Building, (3) Reflection and learning and (4) Formalization of learning. The Building phase is further subdivided into the specification of design principles and requirements and the development of the solution ICT Architecture. The outcomes of this research are relevant not only to Rijkswaterstaat but also to other organizations looking to integrate FCD in their traffic systems, to design science researchers and to ICT architects. ▼ Understanding dynamic, unpredictable, multiple, pluralistic and entangled relations in technology and organization is an inherent endeavor of the Information System (IS) research. However, recent innovation and changes in technology and organizations have posed significant challenges to the existing theoretical and methodological lens to analyze mutually dependent, ensemble, inseparable, ceaselessly intra-actable and constitutively entangled relations in technology and organizations. In line, this study employed sociomateriality as a wider theoretical lens to analyze constitutive entanglements and disentanglements in technology and organization illustrated with a case of E-service of land record in Bangladesh. This study has applied sociomateriality along with intra-actions, diffraction, relational ontology and performativity lens to trace continuous constitutive entanglements and disentanglements in the E-service. Thus, this study identified significance of constitutive entanglement lens through tracing unprecedented changes, unintended consequences and unexpected outcomes from the intra-actions, diffractions, relationalities and performativity in the organizational context and technological process of the E-service. This study has developed ‗action design ethnographic research' (ADER) as an in-depth methodological framework through conducting 'action design research‘ (ADR) in the process of ethnographic research (ER). In line, this study has formulated problems in organizational contexts, designed and redesigned solutions through mutually reciprocal relations between the researcher and clients, conducted concurrent evaluation and identified learning. Consequently, this study has addressed the practitioners' problems through engaging and intervening in the organizational contexts and technological processes of the E-service of land record in Bangladesh. Thus, both the sociomaterial lens and ADER offered potentials to design and redesign the organizational contexts and the E-service processes. Along the line, the study has contributed to theory and practice of IS research through applying sociomateriality and addressing practitioners‘ problems. Therefore, this study has made significant contribution to knowledge and practice.

In my practise-based action research self-study I have developed ways in which to improve my practice as a bridal-gown designer in a highly-competitive and import-driven bridal-gown market. My earnest intent was to improve my practice using action research methods whilst simultaneously developing a solution through critical reflection and practice-based approaches as an economically-sustainable designer of bespoke, cost-effective, competitively-priced bridal gowns. I realised the potential for professional influence and positive economic growth through entrepreneurial thinking, not only for me but for others; it was this which cemented a sense of values in me as an action researcher. I have displayed a healthy marriage between equally important views of practice as theory and the theory as practice. I explored relevant literature that would validate my practice and aid in answering my critical questions, which became evident as validation chapters in my study. Carrying out internships with three bridal gown designers opened my eyes to the real world of business, a sense of theory as practice, where I could see, first-hand, the effects the import industry had on local designers and what they were doing to survive. The conceptualisation of foundational bridal blocks was a solution to save time in my own creative process so that I could produce cost-effective bridal gowns at a competitive price, in a sustainable manner. Once I had explored and created my own interpretation of the foundation block concept that transformed into a small collection of bridal gowns, I used the foundation blocks as a starting point to design bridal gowns for ‘real’ bridal clients. My study is personal in nature; by way of using self-study methods and also the personal ‘one-on-one’ connection I have with my ‘real’ bridal clients. I extended this ‘personal factor’ by holding a public exhibition to which I invited my friends, family, the public and my peers to view and give critical feedback on my work as a bridal gown designer.

Artificial intelligence is getting more and more advanced. In the future, robots equipped with AI will behave an act similarly as humans do, and this raises concerns about how they are going to be governed. However, scientists are alerting that not enough attention is paid to AI from a sociotechnical point of view. Intelligent systems can already behave in unexpected ways, make unfair decisions or treat data with bias. The consequences of this behaviour can directly harm humans, and researchers agree that much more research should be done. One of the applications of AI is combining it with Robotic Automation Solutions. RAS is a form of business process automation that combines both AI and software robots. The simplest application of RAS is known as Robotic Process Automation. More complex RAS solutions are not yet mature enough to be implemented widely. However, research shows that they may be mainstream in less than five years. This research will focus on RPA to be prepared for the more advanced solutions in the future. Because of the newness of RPA and the multiple challenges currently not solved, it has been neglected the need to have a proper scientific methodology to model an RPA implementation. The objective of this thesis is to develop a model that allows to analyse the roles involved in an implementation of an RPA project and to assess the accountability of the roles involved. The model is formed of four main phases. (1) requirements and analysis, (2) development, (3) testing and (4) deployment and governance. Each of these phases comprises different activities. The activities always have two roles assigned; a requestor and an executor. These roles have also been identified, and their responsibilities explained. Special attention has been paid to the accountability relationship between both roles in each activity. The research also covers a discussion of the types of accountability seen in the case studies. Finally, the research also contributes to the views on how RPA would change with the increase and improvement of AI technologies. An analysis on how the model would change if AI becomes very advanced is introduced. The practical contribution of the research has been (i) the creation of an IT artefact to assist and facilitate the implementation of RPA projects by detecting the activities and roles required, (ii) a methodology to identify and assess accountability relationships depending on the characteristics of the roles and activities involved and (iii) a discussion on how AI may evolve in the future and, more specifically, how the IT artefact will have to be modified to cope with it. The theoretical contributions have been (i) the implementation of the Action-Based Design methodology to create a model, (ii) an increase of the existing literature and knowledge about RPA and (iii) the use of the Action Design Research methodology instead of a more conventional Design Science Research approach.

▼ Weak forms of ‘user involvement’ are often conflated with ‘participation’, eroding the personal, social and political potential of participation. In this thesis, I explore ideals of participation in the context of a digital design project to understand why digital teams that engage users in conventional human-centred design (HCD) may not adopt a more participatory approach such as Participatory Design (PD) that engages users in authentic participation based on mutual learning. As a foundation, I traced the parallel but distinct trajectories of HCD and PD, identifying tensions between them based on differences in ideals of participation. Drawing on a range of participatory practices, I also derived the Issues of Participation framework comprised of seven issues: goals, representation, power relations, context, effectiveness, transformations, and sustainability. I demonstrate that these issues can help distinguish PD from HCD. In my fieldwork, I took a Participatory Action Research approach by engaging digital designers on the Account Redesign Project (ARP) at the Toronto Public Library (TPL) as co-researchers. Through a series of workshops, we reflected on participation generally and within ARP. Our reflections shed light on differences in ideals between HCD and PD as well as some of the barriers to moving beyond HCD to engaging library members in more participatory ways. I found that my co-researchers adopted HCD’s pragmatic goal of involving users as informants in order to improve the digital product and had little awareness of PD’s democratic goal of engaging users in authentic participation that gives them a say, not just a voice. Nonetheless, within TPL, they were champions for the inclusion of library members in the design of services. My findings suggest that by addressing personal and organizational barriers, designers practicing HCD may adopt and champion PD. My thesis addresses deeply held concerns within PD about “how participatory a design project has to be so as to ‘qualify’ as a PD project” (Bratteteig Wagner, 2014, p. 117). I argue that distinguishing PD from HCD is valuable in raising awareness of the democratic goals of PD, reclaiming an authentic meaning of participation, and enabling users to achieve more ‘say’ in their future. Obesity is appointed as a pressing 21st century public health threat by the World health organization. Current sedentary behaviour in Western society is key in fast spread of the obesity epidemic. Children are most vulnerable to obesity because overweight children have a 50% chance to become obese as an adult. Latest research pleads for the approach of obesity as a contagious disease. The obesity epidemic spreads to social ties by shared social norms on eating and activity behaviour. The urban environment had played a role in the stopping contagious diseases from spreading in the beginning of the 20th century. Now urban design should find a way to stop the spread of this social epidemic, obesity. In this research four methods were used. The first method is a literature study. Through studying literature the approach of obesity in the last 30 years, the new approaches in social epidemiology and the approach through urban design were studied. Additional semi-structured interviews with experts in both The Netherlands and New York gave more insight in the latest trends and future challenges for this approach of obesity. The literature study formed the base for the ObeCity model, containing essential urban design intervention that would reduce the obesity spread among children. Solutions in this model are general and not yet applicable to a specific design location. Through a context analysis in Beverwaard, the second method used in this research, a more in depth understanding of the local context was obtained. The ObeCity model was adjusted and prioritized based on this local context. In Beverwaard active transport is already well integrated in the urban structure. However means to prevent the social epidemic from spreading, like surprising elements in the streets, were lacking. Research suggested Participatory Action Research (PAR) as a sufficient method to strengthen health perception and encourage the use of public space. Through this method the participants are involved and gain control over their environment. Also the involvement of community members when designing public space increases the chance for the community to use this space for physical activity. So this method on the one hand served the community. On the other hand it served the research and gave more insight in the needs of the target group to become physically active in the urban environment. Through this data the ObeCity model was adjusted for the last time. The creative ideas of the target group during the PAR process were direct design inspiration. These designs were adjusted to the guidelines of the model and applied in the neighbourhood through drawings and models in the final design process. So the ObeCity model involves both trends in research, spatial context and social dynamics in the neighbourhood. ▼ Environmental deterioration and social injustice highlight the discrepancy between ‘educated’ and ‘wise’ and, by corollary, call into question our approach to education. In order to investigate how we might advance Education for Sustainability (EfS) in a Scottish secondary school context this research engages with: relevant theory, the educational policy context, and practice in the form of two action research pilot projects. The concepts of utopianism and design are proposed as original and potentially useful to understand, guide and evaluate EfS and are linked to an analytical framework to clarify the concept of EfS endorsed in this thesis. The analytical framework developed comprises four thinking modes: systems thinking; future thinking; an emphasis on values and priorities; and action competency, each qualified through reference to practice. The pilot projects highlighted the challenges of monitoring and evaluating; illustrated opportunities and challenges to deliver EfS theory; offered new theoretical insights into EfS implementation; and enabled reflection on the status of EfS in the wider curriculum. The challenge of undertaking action research as a postgraduate student led to critical analysis of action research in academia. The thesis highlights the potentially promising policy context to facilitate EfS, particularly in Scotland, but also the practical challenges to implement EfS. Such challenges include: concerns over the clarity of policy documents; teachers’ interest and ability to facilitate pupil-led learning; and resources to support the quality of EfS being delivered. Recommendations for future research include additional classroom-based projects; policy implementation analysis; and investigation of teachers’ values, attitudes and capacity. It was concluded that utopianism, design, and the four thinking modes can potentially contribute to qualifying EfS in current policy and facilitate pupils to critique the status quo, and develop and share alternative visions of a sustainable future. ▼ New Zealand’s fauna are depredated upon by introduced mammals and human intervention is required either in the form of poisoning or trapping to protect many native species. In 1999, New Zealand introduced the Animal Welfare Act which spawned the National Animal Welfare Act Committee (NAWAC) guidelines, which then set performance standards for animal traps. The major traps used failed to meet these standards because of time to kill (kill traps) or degree of trauma (restraint traps) to target parts. Consequently, new traps need to be developed that have a higher humaneness level to satisfy the NAWAC guidelines. There are two aims to this thesis. The first aim is, to develop an inventive methodology that guides inventors in developing animal kill traps to meet the Class A/B criteria of the NAWAC guidelines. The inventive methodology presented is a blend of Action Research, mechanical design, ecology and human psychology and is demonstrated by the invention of animal traps. The animal traps invented are then classified according to the NAWAC guidelines for possum (class B), ferret (class A), rat (class A) and stoat (class A). Later in the thesis the inventive methodology is modified to incorporate the “natural keys”. This modified methodology shows the primary concern is the trigger development and then designing the means of delivering the lethal blow as a secondary item. A simple rat trap is designed to demonstrate this principle. The second aim is, to develop a methodology to holistically compare one trap against another. This holistic comparison is called the “Trap Factor”. The Trap Factor equation is presented, which allows a number of traps to be compared on a number of attributes, namely: humaneness, ease of use, efficiency, trap placement and annual cost of the traps being compared. The Trap Factor is demonstrated on the traps invented in this thesis and used on data from other researchers which can result in conclusions that are dramatically opposed to those the researchers themselves may have drawn from their data when the other trap factor variables are considered rather than solely efficiency. The Trap Factor is further applied to compare two different trapping systems (snare and padded leg-hold) and from the literature indicates that the snare can be a humane killing system. The Trap Factor then identifies the focus area of ease of use as an area where improvement could be made. There were five (Blitz, Bulldog (later called Warrior), Hammer, Thumper and Dominus) commercial traps developed and three concept traps developed to target ferrets, multi-species and rats. The Blitz trap was designed as an easier trap to set than the Bulldog and is currently sold only in New Zealand. The Bulldog trap for possums is currently patented in New Zealand and the United States and maintains 35% of the New Zealand possum kill trap market. ▼ This research study was an investigation into the contribution of communication designers as design researchers for enabling sustainability of livelihoods in a community. The objectives were to generate knowledge for the communication design field and also for communities which are seeking sustainable livelihoods. This investigation was guided by three main research questions: what strategies and tools communication designers as design researchers can use to enable themselves and a community to undertake a collaborative investigation; how design researchers use these strategies and tools to achieve research objectives; and what is the contribution of communication designers as design researchers in enabling a community to attain a sustainable livelihood. This was a collaborative research project involving nineteen people with physical impairments who live in the Samut Prakran province in Thailand. This community was selected as a case study because this research evolved from my previous research which I completed with this group. The previous research marked a significant shift in focus of Thai research projects with this community because it aimed to work with the community to create new solutions to their problems. The solution from *my* previous project was no longer effective; therefore, this community was chosen as an intrinsic case study. Participatory Action Research (PAR) was employed as the research methodology because it allowed researchers and community representatives to have active role in the process. Human-Centred Design (HCD) and Sustainable Livelihood Approach (SLA) were employed as key approaches. The research was constructed around four main workshops targeting four successive stages: 1) reflecting on the previous research which was undertaken with this community in order to clarify the research problems and plan for the next stage; 2) recruiting participants and facilitating them to investigate their own situation and set the livelihood goals that they desired to attain; 3) enabling the participants to create and implement their own ideas to improve their situation; and 4) monitoring the participants as they implemented the project in their community and evaluating the effectiveness of the implementation. This study had main research outcomes. Firstly, the participating community stated that they had achieved the livelihood goals that they desired. They also devised a complementary income-generating activity which enabled them to continue to improve their capabilities, earn income and reinforce their value in their community and reduce their vulnerability. Secondly, PAR integrated with HCD and combined with SLA were shown to be effective strategies and approaches because they facilitated the transfer of knowledge to the community participants, gave them both incentive and ownership of their ideas and actions, and enabled them to create and pursue their own solutions. ▼ This thesis explores the integration of a wiki technology tool to support collaboration and reflection in a secondary school music context. The wiki intervention also allows the examination of students' development of self-regulated learning processes, as well as the impact of such an approach on the role of the teacher within the classroom. The vocal wiki was integrated in a school setting, analyzed, and developed using a design-based methodology. The study began with a pilot phase, followed by two iteration cycles. At the end of each cycle, data was collected and analyzed to inform changes to the design of the wiki tool for the following iteration. Study participants involved 50 secondary music students as well as the teacher/researcher. The student-created content of the vocal wiki, which encompassed individual reflections, collaborative discussion, vocal recordings, and student-selected photos, as well as focus group interviews and the teacher/researcher journal, provided data for the design evaluation. Data analysis included coding and descriptive summaries of student wiki contributions in the various design iterations, as well as three case studies intended to provide a deeper narrative exploration into individual student experiences of engaging with the vocal wiki tool. The data was analyzed according to three dimensions that represented different aspects of the design, enactment, and overall impact of the vocal wiki tool: collaboration, reflection and performance. Study findings support the interpretation that there was an improved level of student agency and self-regulated learning that resulted from the process of reflection on performance as well as collaborative dialogue and peer interaction. By engaging in reflection on their own musical experiences, students gained efficacy in monitoring their own musical progress, and set more realistic musical goals. Through the development of self-regulated learning skills, my work suggests that students become more independent as musicians, and further develop their musical identities, when they began to think differently about their own singing and their contributions to the ensemble. This work supports a pedagogical shift concerning the role of the music teacher in performance-based classrooms, from the traditional conductor-centered view to a more student-centered approach with a focus on reflection and collaboration. ▼ This study used Participatory Action Research (PAR) to investigate the facilitators of disability access in local government, with a focus on the City of Bunbury in Western Australia. In 2014, the City of Bunbury adopted a long-term aspirational goal to become the Most Accessible Regional City in Australia (MARCIA), and the findings and recommendations from this study are intended to inform strategic priorities for achieving that goal, including a potential change of corporate approach required to attain MARCIA status. The thesis critically evaluates the historical, cultural and systemic factors that have influenced accessibility and inclusion in the development of Bunbury’s public infrastructure, situating this discussion in the context of national and international disability research. It also draws on literature about deliberative democracy, knowledge partnering and co-design. A defining feature of this study is its methodology. Participatory Action Research seeks to position the researched as researchers and activists, engaged in a concurrent process of inquiring, sharing and influencing. To achieve this aim, eleven people with lived experience of disability were recruited as co-researchers, working alongside the PhD student who adopted the role of PAR facilitator to ‘animate’ and facilitate the process of inquiry. Together, they engaged Informants from the City of Bunbury (elected members, executives, managers and technical officers) in deliberative dialogue about the system of public design. Interviews and group discussions were recorded and transcribed, and analysed using the Framework Analysis method. Informed by an extensive literature review undertaken by the PhD student, the framework was developed collaboratively with the project’s co-researchers. Historically, universal design has been minimally and inconsistently applied by regional cities such as the City of Bunbury in the development of public infrastructure, including buildings, facilities, services, information and events intended for use by the public. The study found five key facilitators of universal design in public infrastructure: documenting and applying benchmarks and safeguards for best practice in universal design, providing training and technical support for staff and contractors, and engaging people with lived experience of disability in co-design. The five facilitators of universal design in local government are presented in this thesis as a model of Universal Public Design, that may be usefully applied in other public design contexts, including other local governments, other tiers of government, and the commercial sector. In keeping with the action research philosophy of Participatory Action Research, and to fulfil the obligations of the ‘industry engagement scholarship’ that supported this study, the preliminary findings and recommendations were presented to Council in a research report in June 2018, and endorsed unanimously for implementation by the City of Bunbury. ▼ This dissertation brings attention to the communication processes taking place during design of an Idea Zone at a science center. It focuses on the conceptual phase of design, during which designers seek to integrate the ideas and needs of stakeholders into design processes through such frameworks as Participatory Design (PD). In bringing a focus on communication process to conceptual design frameworks such as PD, I explore the assumed roles behind participatory design processes and the contexts created through those processes during actual design work. As these Idea Zone design efforts took place in a museum and also within the context of an ongoing action research program there, I explored the organizational challenges of cultivating spaces and conversations where designers, community members, researchers, and other participants cooperatively explored contexts and spaces for jointly designing together. A central assertion of this work is that the World Café, a designed discussion format, fits with the needs of a science center for inviting community participation in design processes. A related goal of this work was to test that assertion not as a success or failure but as an emergent and contingent process requiring changes and course adjustments through reflective practice. To do this, my central method was an ethnographic engagement in the spirit of action research where with the Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI) in Tampa, Florida I planned for and hosted a series of World Cafés revolving around design of an Idea Zone in the science center. Café participants included MOSI leadership and board members, designers, community members, University of South Florida (USF) students, museum staff, and other stakeholders. Data sources from the World Café included the Café planning efforts, conversations and other data generated during the Cafés themselves, as well as organizational outcomes from hosting the Cafés. Outcomes in this sense might include, for example, the potential for future Cafés around design of the Idea Zone or how what is learned in the Café becomes integrated into other Idea Zone design processes or everyday organizational contexts such as meetings at MOSI. In addition to the Café and as part of understanding Café outcomes, I also drew from data generated through follow-up interviews I conducted with Café participants including designers, community members, and others. Finally, I drew upon ethnographic data generated through my observations and interactions within the Idea Zone and the larger scene of MOSI, ranging from everyday conversations with museum visitors to the possibility of performances in the space. Le domaine de notre recherche est la décision stratégique au sein des organisations. Plus précisément il s'agit de l'aide à la prise de décision stratégique et de la problématique de l'acquisition des informations utiles pour de telles décisions. D'un côté les ‘informations de terrain' issus des contacts entre personnes, des réunions professionnelles, etc. demeurent essentielles pour les dirigeants. D'un autre côté les journaux quotidiens nationaux et internationaux fournissent un volume considérable de données que l'on peut qualifier de données brutes (Raw data). Mais, outre ces sources classiques, le recueil des informations a évolué de façon considérable avec l'avènement des technologies de l'information et notamment de l'Internet pour ce qui concerne dans notre recherche. Nous avons choisi le domaine concernant l'acquisition des informations de terrain fournies par les journaux nationaux quotidiens : les journaux quotidiens colombiens pour ce qui concernera notre étude empirique. Pour acquérir cette information nous avons proposé sur la base d'une recherche du type « Action Design Research », de concevoir, de construire et d'expérimenter un artéfact permettant de détecter des signaux faibles potentiels issus des données extraites d'Internet et qui aideraient les dirigeants de l'entreprise à découvrir et comprendre leur environnement. L'artéfact a été conçu et construit en deux phases utilisant des concepts théoriques liés à la surcharge de données, à la veille stratégique notamment la VAS-IC® (Veille Anticipative Stratégique – Intelligence Collective) et sur les caractéristiques souhaitables des systèmes informatisés d'aide à la décision stratégique. Après sa construction, l'artéfact a été expérimenté sur un terrain permettant d'évaluer son effectivité. Cette expérimentation a permis d'améliorer nos connaissances sur la pertinence des données numériques dans le processus de la prise de la décision. Les décideurs impliqués ont également pu d'intégrer des nouvelles pratiques adaptées à leurs besoins d'information.

Our research area is around the strategic decision within organizations. More precisely, it is applicable as an aid for strategic decision-making and detecting useful information for such decisions. On the one hand, the ‘information from the field' from the contacts between individuals, business meetings, etc. is always essential for managers. On the other hand, national and international newspapers can provide a considerable volume of data that can be defined as the raw data. However, besides these classical sources, gathering information has changed dramatically with the advent of information technology and particularly internet that is related to our research. We chose the area for the acquisition of ‘information from the field' provided by the national daily newspapers: the Colombian newspaper which concerns to our empirical study.
