▼ Data centers host online services on distributed computing systems comprising heterogeneous networked servers. Virtualization technology is a promising solution to support multiple online services using fewer computing resources. It enables a single server to be shared among multiple performance-isolated platforms called virtual machines (VM), where each VM can serve one or more applications. Also, virtualization enables on-demand computing where resources such as CPU, memory, and disk space are allocated to applications as needed, based on the currently prevailing workload demand, rather than statically, based simply on the peak workload demand. By dynamically provisioning VMs and turning servers on/off properly, data center operators can maintain the desired quality of service (QoS) while achieving higher server utilization and lower power consumption.Various techniques have been proposed to automate the system management tasks of computing systems. In terms of control architectures, a centralized controller, though offering the best performance, is only capable of managing the performance of a stand-alone server or a small-scale system comprising a few servers. Significant challenges must still be addressed to achieve real-time control of a large-scale computing system with multiple interacting components. Therefore, hierarchical control and decentralized decision making of computing systems is a recent phenomenon and an area of active research.This thesis focuses on designing hierarchical and decentralized control architectures to manage the power and performance of large-scale computing systems. First, we propose a hierarchical control architecture to manage a virtualized server cluster hosting VMs and supporting online services. In this hierarchy, fully distributed local controllers optimize the CPU share of VMs under their control such that the aggregate CPU share provided to the cluster covers the incoming workload, while a supervisory controller on top dynamically shuts down the extra machines during periods of light workload to reduce the clusters power consumption. Two different strategies, receding horizon control and neural network based control, are compared for the local controllers. We validate the framework on a cluster supporting three online services, showing that our scheme adapts quickly to dynamic workload changes, and is scalable and quite flexible in that servers can be added/removed anytime while maintaining overall system performance. Also, when managed using our control scheme, the cluster saves, on average, 20% in power-consumption costs over a three hour period when compared to a system operating without dynamic control.Second, we propose a fully decentralized control architecture to further improve the scalability of the hierarchical design. ▼ The purpose of this project was to investigate job satisfaction at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology Library (CPUT). Academic libraries throughout the world and in South Africa have undergone massive change in the last few years. CPUT Library is the result of the merger of two technikon libraries in 2005. The study aimed to investigate the impact of the merger on staff job satisfaction. If libraries are to meet the challenges of change, they need satisfied and committed staff. This dissertation project is framed by two closely related models in human resources management, namely Herzberg‟s two factor theory of motivation and Hackman and Oldham‟s Job Characteristics Model (JCM). Questionnaires were used to gather data from 91 library staff in CPUT. A total of 44 responded. The survey identified areas of satisfaction and dissatisfaction among staff and the impact of the merger on staff who were employed before 2005. The study finds that 66% report overall job satisfaction with strong satisfaction with the work itself and the sense of accomplishment it brings. The majority of library staff is dissatisfied with promotion prospects and work distribution. Despite the years of restructuring, there are several comments on library structures. The need for more participative style of management and clear reporting structures are mentioned. The four questions on respondents‟ future plans reveal that affective commitment to the institution is not very high. Respondents like their work but 48% say they would accept a job outside the CPUT Library and only 50% claim to be proud to say they work at CPUT Library, with another 27% neutral. There are mixed findings on the impact of the merger, which might well be connected to the lack of institutional commitment. Only 50% of respondents who were at CPUT before the merger claim to be more satisfied now than before it. ▼ Historically the process of career development was thought of as occurring in adolescence and adulthood; however, the renewed emphasis on lifelong career development has led to a greater focus on the career developmental stage of childhood. The present research focused on the development and trialling of a research-based computerised career exploration tool, Growing-up: Children Building Careers™ (GCBC™) that can be used for early intervention in children‘s career development. The integration of developmental considerations within a career developmental context is of paramount importance, considering that child and career developmental theories share certain basic foundational principles such as the dual recognition of identifiable life stages and the resolution or accomplishment of associated tasks. The focus of the research is to provide access to a research-based tool that can assist learners with developing age appropriate career developmental skills. As the overview of education policy and existing programs will show, there are challenges in providing access to and improving the nature, level, and quality of career development services. Gaps in access to career development learning are particularly evident at the elementary education level. Furthermore it is clear that learners need to be at the centre of a radical rethink of careers services within a lifelong learning framework in order to ensure access to navigational tools throughout a lifetime of work and study transitions. Digital environments, such as the GCBC™, are tools that broaden and extend learning possibilities for children and appropriately designed digital environments can provide a vehicle that can take children further than they might travel unassisted. The research is divided into five phases and includes eight to ten year old children as participants. Phase one focused on the program design and pilot study (ensuring content validity and age-appropriate language use), while phases two to five focused on the fieldwork (i.e., pre –test, program exposure, post-test, and focus group discussions). The researcher made use of a mixed research design that combines both quantitative and qualitative research methods. The total sample consisted of 146 children between the ages of eight to ten years old. The control group had 72 children and the experimental group 74 children with a mean age of 8.74 years (SD = 0.63) for the total sample. The quantitative data collection entailed a pre-and post-test design with learners‘ career development measured with the Childhood Career Development Scale (CCDS) and their career awareness with the Revised Career Awareness Survey (RCAS). Qualitative data was collected in the form of two focus group discussions, which included a small sample of children from the experimental group, as well as insights gained from educators following the GCBC™ fieldwork. ▼ Network applications and Internet services fail all too frequently. However, end users cannot effectively identify the root cause using traditional troubleshooting techniques due to the limited capability to distinguish failures caused by local network elements from failures caused by elements located outside the local area network. To overcome these limitations, we propose a new approach, one that leverages collaboration of user machines to assist end users in diagnosing various failures related to Internet connectivity and poor network performance. First, we present DYSWIS ("Do You See What I See?"), an automatic network fault detection and diagnosis system for end users. DYSWIS identifies the root cause(s) of network faults using diagnostic rules that consider diverse information from multiple nodes. In addition, the DYSWIS rule system is specially designed to support crowdsourced and distributed probes. We also describe the architecture of DYSWIS and compare its performance with other tools. Finally, we demonstrate that the system successfully detects and diagnoses network failures which are difficult to diagnose using a single-user probe. Failures in lower layers of the protocol stack also have the potential to disrupt Internet access; for example, slow Internet connectivity is often caused by poor Wi-Fi performance. Channel contention and non-Wi-Fi interference are the primary reasons for this performance degradation. We investigate the characteristics of non-Wi-Fi interference that can severely degrade Wi-Fi performance and present WiSlow ("Why is my Wi-Fi slow?"), a software tool that diagnoses the root causes of poor Wi-Fi performance. WiSlow employs user-level network probes and leverages peer collaboration to identify the physical location of these causes. The software includes two principal methods: packet loss analysis and 802.11 ACK number analysis. When the issue is located near Wi-Fi devices, the accuracy of WiSlow exceeds 90%. Finally, we expand our collaborative approach to the Internet of Things (IoT) and propose a platform for network-troubleshooting on home devices. This platform takes advantage of built-in technology common to modern devices – multiple communication interfaces. For example, when a home device has a problem with an interface it sends a probe request to other devices using an alternative interface. The system then exploits cooperation of both internal devices and remote machines. We show that this approach is useful in home networks by demonstrating an application that contains actual diagnostic algorithms.

▼ Electronic resources (ERs) in academic libraries have become a global phenomenon, and as libraries rely more on these resources managing them effectively becomes crucial. Electronic resource management (ERM) has consequently become a core function which many academic libraries around the globe appear to find challenging to implement effectively. Challenges of managing ERs are particularly pronounced in developing countries such as Ghana where the introduction of ICTs has typically been characterised by inadequate resources. Although there is an extensive literature on both the management and use of ERs, little research has studied how the two aspects could affect each other. Ineffective management of ERs could negatively affect their use; likewise, low usage of ERs could negatively impact on the management of these resources. Studying the concepts of management and usage of ERs together would result in better recommendations to inform practice and eliminate the challenges. In addition, the literature on the management of ERs is predominantly centred around libraries in the developed country context. Moreover, academic libraries in Ghana do not appear to be effective in managing ERs. There is a lack of understanding on how academic libraries in Ghana are managing ERs, and the ways in which this is affecting their usage and vice-versa. The study therefore fills the gaps by exploring the connection between the management and usage of ERs in academic libraries in a developing country context. Placed within a post-positivist worldview, this mixed-methods research employed a multiple case study approach, involving two public and two private universities in Ghana. Stakeholders included in the study were library staff, faculty, students, and consortium executives. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with library staff and members of the governing council of the Consortium of Academic and Research Libraries in Ghana (CARLIGH) concurrently with surveys of faculty and postgraduate students of the institutions investigated. These were supported by document analysis. To guide data collection and analysis, the Techniques for Electronic Resource Management (TERMS) framework (Emery & Stone, 2013), and an initial conceptual model of factors developed using constructs from the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) (Venkatesh, Morris, Davis & Davis 2003) and the literature underpinned the study. The interview findings revealed inadequate planning for ERs in the case institutions owing to operational challenges including inadequate policies for ERs, inadequate funding, and understaffing. Although efforts were being made to follow standard procedures some components of ER workflow were absent in both public and private case libraries, whereas other aspects of the workflow were responsibilities of parties external to the libraries. The Internet is a cost-effective and efficient way of distributing information to all stakeholders in a transparent, globalised business environment. It is imperative that companies adopt the Internet as a distribution method for corporate annual report information to remain competitive. The aim of this study was to determine the current state and level of adoption of the Internet as a delivery and communication mechanism for disseminating online/digital annual reports in the largest listed companies in South Africa. The population selected for the survey was the 2001 Financial Mail top 300 (SA Giants) companies based on total assets. The research was conducted by analysing the corporate websites of the selected companies. The survey was done to establish whether a corporate website existed and, if so, whether the full annual report was available and electronic format used. The aim of this study was to ascertain how many companies in South Africa are publishing full annual reports on the Web. The research consisted of a literature review and empirical study. The purpose of the literature review was to establish whether previous research exists in this field in South Africa. The results of the international literature review were compared to South Africa to determine whether the country is lagging behind global trends in this arena. The typical users, function, content and shortcomings of the annual report were identified. The benefits of and problems with digital annual reports for companies and stakeholders were described. Results indicate that the top 100 South African companies have increased their corporate Web presence from 43% in 1999 to 92% in 2002. Top 100 companies with annual reports on the Internet increased from 11% in 1999 to 84% in 2002. Results indicated that 227 (75,6%) of the top 300 companies had a website and 31 (10,3%) had no home page. The websites were also analysed to investigate how many companies had detailed electronic annual reports available. The study showed that 179 (59,6%) companies had digital annual reports and 48 (16,0%) had no digital annual report available on the Internet. Of the companies surveyed, 131 (43,6%) had their annual reports in PDF format and 58 (19,3%) in HTML. Only 38 companies (12,6%) presented annual reports in HTML and PDF format on the Internet. Very few companies provide users with the functionality to download data in spreadsheet format for manipulation. Only 7 companies (2,3%) offered this feature. This study also investigated the relationship between digital annual reports (dependent variable) and company characteristics (independent variable). The increase in internal and external communication has brought about a radical change in organisation and has left its mark on education. Information remains the facilitator's most important aid. At present information is stored in textbooks, facilitator's notes, audiocassettes, sources of reference, videos and curriculum guides. Facilitators and learners obtain information from these sources and process it in various ways. By means of digital technology it has become possible both to keep all these sources up to date and to establish a direct link with other sources. The question arises as to how education can make use of this extensive aid. This research poses the question whether education can be advanced through the effective use of electronic communication such as videos, computers and, more specifically, the Internet. With a view to the utilisation of electronic communication for education, an Internet module as an example was designed, in order to determine which application possibilities exist in electronic communication, more specifically the Internet, and how they can be utilised for the dissemination of information. The research has attempted to provide guidelines for the effective utilisation of an Internet module applied as learning content. A qualitative, exploratory and descriptive research design is followed within contextual setting to achieve the aims of the study. In Phase One of the research a relevant study of literature on electronic communication, the Internet, and education was undertaken in order to design and apply an Internet module. The research method consists of interviews with media experts, focusing on the application possibilities and the establishment of guidelines for an Internet module. A group interview with principals was held mainly for verification and triagulatory purposes. The results of the study were compared with existing literature on the subject. The conclusions, findings and recommendations resulting from the research were presented for consideration and further research. Some of the most important findings and recommendations follow.

▼ The Digital Family Oral History Pilot (DFOHP) data were collected and catalogued on a private website blog for family members to learn about their grandfather (ALP) who died without telling his own story. This study examined the outcomes and perceptions of the family members who were engaged with the pilot. A self-selected sample of 17 family members were interviewed and their reflections recorded. The reflections held their perceptions of adult learning as they responded to three research questions. “How did the family change when constructing an oral history about themselves?” “How did the family members perceive themselves as part of a family community through this oral history process?” and “What is the impact on the family relationships?” The reflections were coded and clustered in color assigned categories that revealed the themes. Findings indicated the family changed in positive ways through knowledge they gained, the new connection via the Internet, through affirmation of each other and the desire that future generations will use this resource. The family perceived themselves in varied positions within their social structure. The daughter placed herself in the epicenter due to her knowledge of her father (ALP). Family members, who perceived themselves as outliers, identified new knowledge of ALP that will help them move closer to the center in the future. The final research question on the impact on family relations elicited responses such as mended brother/sister stresses and enthusiasm that many of the family participated in the storytelling. The few negative reflections expressed sadness that ALP was not here to see what the family constructed and concern that individual stories did not encroach on the available space. The combined stories and reflections shared enough oral history that ALP was revealed as a person worth knowing to those who did not know his oral history previously. Finally, with responses such as “learned”, “learning” and “I now know” received from the sample, an environment of non-threatening informal education established new ways of knowing through an activity as simple as sharing story. The research study investigates the importance of information as a resource in academic institutions. The study serves to answer questions appertaining to management of information as a resource, such as, what is information resource management? How should information as a resource be managed in academic institutions? How should information be audited? Which stages should be followed in developing information policy? The interrelationships of information as a resource, information auditing and information policy as managerial components are discussed. Information audit and information policy become the major components of management of information as a resource. Information in various enterprises is becoming increasingly recognized as a resource. The study purports to indicate that information as a resource can be managed like other traditional resources such as labour, entrepreneurship, capital and natural resources to use it for competitive advantage. The aims of information audit and information policy are to serve as fundamental development of an information managerial strategy. The information audit enables the information service to pursue the most significant strategic marketing of its information resources. The necessary breadth of information auditing techniques, such as Burk and Horton's "Infomap" are required to fulfill a wide variety of objectives. They analyze the effective methodology for auditing information resource controls and help to identify relevant and accurate information resources for the purpose of learning, teaching and research. The purpose of developing information policy is prompted by the objective of which the information enterprise would successfully like to achieve. It is more appropriate to develop a set of information policies, each of which is concerned with a specific area of operation or focussed on other topics of interest and informational value within the academic institution. At the ultimate end the University of the North is singled out as a model for the development of information policy.

▼ Universities are embracing technology and moving towards electronic resources information to facilitate research and learning. This has led to the belief that a significant number of resources used by library users in academic libraries lie in the virtual environment. Consequently, library users are required to acquire sufficient information, and information and communications technology (ICT) skills and competencies. Driven by the need to clarify the use and non-use of electronic resources by library users, the main objective of this this study was to investigate the use of electronic resources by distance learners at University of Namibia. The study therefore addressed the following research questions: What are the attitudes and perceptions of distance learners towards electronic resources? What electronic resources are available to distance learners at UNAM? What is the level of awareness of the learners about electronic resources available in the UNAM Library? What ICT competencies do distance learners have to effectively use electronic resources? What is the level of use of electronic resources by distance learners? What factors hinder the use of electronic resources by distance learners? And, what recommendations are needed to improve the use of electronic resources by distance learners? 1l1e study was w1derpinned by the post-positivist paradigm and used both qualitative and quantitative approaches. To determine attitudes, beliefs and behaviour of distance learners towards electronic resources, the study 1nade use of the survey research design methodology. The population of the study comprised of distance learners, CES lecturers, centre coordinators, and UNAM Library staff. Data presentation laid out in this study was obtained through the use of survey questionnaires, interviews and observations. ln assembling the data for analyses, the study utilised MS Excel and the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) to generate frequency counts, percentage and descriptive statistics for the quantitative data gathered, and employed the use of ATLAS .tiTM software and content analysis to analyse qualitative data. For reliability and validity, data collection instruments in this study were peer reviewed, pre-tested and triangulated. For the purposes of ethical considerations in research of this kind, the University of KwaZulu-Natal research ethics protocol were adhered to, and permission also sought from the University of Nam1bia to carry out the study in its distance leaning centres and University Library. The findings arrived at in this study revealed that distance leaners were positive about electronic resources due to prior experience, high self-efficacy and the various benefits derived by using them. However, they did not make use of e-resources subscribed to due to high cost, poor internet connectivity, electricity outages, lack of sufficient computers, and low levels of computer skills. ▼ The University of South Africa’s 2015 strategic plan foregrounds the need for technology-enhanced learner support and the university of South Africa (Unisa) Library spends approximately 17 million rand per year on purchasing electronic resources, including e-books, in order to be in line with the strategic plan (Unisa 2012). Academic staff play a major role in collection development in that the Unisa Library Collection Developers liaise with them in developing the collection. Academics are therefore expected to show a high usage rate of these resources but the Unisa Library’s January - December 2012 E-book Collections usage statistics report indicates the opposite. Academic staff from the College of Human Sciences are expected to show high usage rate because their disciplines mostly rely on books as opposed to other types of information materials. There is a perception that academic staff are not making optimum use of e-books as expected. The aim of this study was to establish the perceptions of academics in the College of Human Sciences on the use of e-books, especially in their core business of teaching and research in order to inform a well-directed strategy e-book collection in the future. The study employed quantitative methodological approach by means of a questionnaire to collect data from 452 academic staff. With a 37%, response rate the quantitative data was descriptively analysed using SPSS while the open-ended questions were summarised and quantified. The study revealed that even though a majority of academic staff were aware about the availability of e-books at the Unisa Library, only a few academic staff used them often and there were still some who never used them. The majority of academic staff found e-books more useful for research when searching for relevant specific content only as opposed to teaching and preparing coursework. The study further revealed some of the reasons for low usage of which shortage of titles in the e-format is the main reason. The study recommends that academics should collaborate with the Library to identify gaps in the e-books collection and recommend titles that should be added in order fill those gaps. ▼ The aim of the work is to examine the issue of pricing network resources so as to ensure fair and efficient resource-sharing among users. The basic question we address is: Do there exist simple pricing schemes such that fair and efficient resource-sharing is ensured, even though (i) individ-ual users are concerned with maximizing their own net benefits, and (ii) a user alternates between data-limited and infinite-data phases? The Internet provides congestion control through the Transport Control Protocol TCP). TCP congestion control is dependent on voluntary participation of cooperative end users. If everyone uses TCP, congestion could be managed. However, it can be mathematically shown that it is economically more favorable for users to violate TCP rules. The published literature suggests pricing as a mechanism to control congestion. The context of operation is as follows. Each user is assumed to have a utility function which is a concave in-creasing function of the rate at which she sends data through the network. The problem is to find the vector of users' rates such that the sum of all users' utility functions is maximized, subject to resource capacity constraints. This constrained optimization problem can be solved in a central-ized manner if all the utility functions are known. In practice, however, the utility functions are not known and there is no central authority. In the literature this optimization problem has been decomposed into two sub-problems such that the knowledge of utility functions is not required. These problems are solved independently by the network and the users. It has been shown that at system optimum, the network computed vec-tor of rates and users’ choice of prices are in equilibrium and they also solve the system optimi-zation problem of maximizing sum of utilities of all users. But in all related work, the authors as-sume that users have infinite amount of data to sustain the system-optimal data rates indefinitely. In practice, however, users may run out of data at times. We propose a pricing scheme in which, under certain conditions, the following is possible. If some users run out of data, and hence are not able to inject traffic at their respective system op-timal data rates, it is possible for others with plenty of data to transmit above their system opti-mal rates. This allows efficient utilization of the resource at all times. Further, it is possible to compel users above optimal rates to back down when, at a later point of time, data-limited users are back with enough data. This ensures that fairness is maintained. ▼ The study presents the findings of a survey regarding access to and use of electronic information resources in academic libraries of the Lesotho Library Consortium (LELICO). Nine institutions were studied, namely; the National University of Lesotho; Lesotho College of Education; Lesotho Agricultural College; Lerotholi Polytechnic; Centre of Accounting Studies; National Health Training College; Lesotho Distance Teaching Centre; Lesotho Institute of Public Administration and Management, and Institute of Development Management. The Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) model by Venkatesh et al., (2009) underpinned the study, using the main variables or constructs of direct determinants of intention, being; Facilitating Condition (FC), Effort Expectancy (EE), Performance Expectancy (PE) and Social Influence (SI), also the direct determinants for use behaviour, User Behaviour (UB) and Behaviour Intention (BI). The study adopted the post-positivists paradigm and mixed methods were used; that is, qualitative and quantitative approaches. The self-administered questionnaires were distributed to the librarians (systems librarians, subject librarians and acquisition librarians), while the two semi-structured interviews were conducted with the Pro-Vice Chancellor, Directors and Rectors, University Librarian, and Library Directors. Response rate of 69.6% for librarians, 44.4% for PVC, Directors or Rectors and 56% for University Librarian and Library Directors were achieved. To analyse quantitative data, the SPSS Version 20.0 was used, while qualitative data was analysed by sorting, classifying and arranging data which were examined in relation to combined thematic content analysis. To ascertain reliability and validity of the instruments, pre-testing was done of both the instruments for librarians and the Library Director of the University of KwaZulu-Natal Library, in Pietermaritzburg. The research study was guided by the ethical protocol of the University of KwaZulu-Natal, which was adhered to. It was established that the type of e-resources accessed and used by academic libraries of LELICO included: e-mail, search engines, websites, Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC), e-journals, full-text databases, reference databases, institutional repositories (IRs) and Compact Disc-Read Only Memories (CD-ROMs). The study established that e-resources which were accessed and used mostly were e-mail, search engines and websites, followed by the OPAC, e-journals, full-text databases, IRs, reference databases. The study further found that main uses of e-resources were for communication, to support teaching and learning activities, such as professional research, assignments and lecture requirements. The findings showed that awareness of e-resources was mainly through formal engagement, such as library orientation and through informal engagement such as colleagues. ▼ This dissertation is composed by a set of articles that present the process and results of the research and its future research lines. The papers were published between 2012 and 2014. The research object are the repositories of open educational resources (ROER), which are defined by McGreal (2011) as databases of learning content such as videos, audio recordings and multimedia applications that made teaching materials accessible to students and teachers. This dissertation is centred in the context of an academic discussion relevant for higher education and to the academic community in general, its main objective is to propose a framework for quality assurance for the development of ROER by obtaining theoretical quality indicators from the review of the literature and contrasting those indicators with current ROER. Also, this study evaluates how academics select and use OER with the aim to describe a model for a successful implementation of ROER. The research methodology includes quantitative and qualitative techniques. The first stage of this research was to review the literature to obtain from it a set of quality indicators for the development, design and implementation of ROER. From this review 10 quality indicators were obtain, which were contrasted on the second stage within 80 ROER worldwide to analyse if these comply with the recommendations of the literature. The third stage was the application of a survey to 217 academics from 35 countries that were asked how and when they use technologies, social networks and OER in their academic practice and also, which were the advantages and barriers of the use of ROER. Finally, in the last stage, a group of 20 worldwide experts in OER were interviewed with the aim to identify the quality criteria for the development of ROER according to their views and experience. ▼ Large-scale virtualized data centers enable the new era of cloud computing and provide the core infrastructure to meet the computing and storage requirements for both enterprise information technology needs and cloud-based services. To support the ever-growing cloud computing needs, the number of physical servers and virtual machines in today’s data centers are increasing exponentially, which in turn leads to enormous challenges in designing cost-effective data center networks (DCNs) and efficient resource sharing via network provisioning. With data availability and security at stake, the issues with data center networks are more critical than ever. As one of the most important determinants of network performance, the data center network architecture plays a dominant role in determining the system reliability, network capacity, latency and even the routing efficiency. With this motivation, in this thesis, we ﬁrstly present the design, implementation and evaluation of SprintNet, a novel server-centric network architecture for data centers. SprintNet achieves high performance in network capacity, fault tolerance, and network latency. SprintNet is also a scalable, yet low-diameter network architecture where the longest path length of SprintNet can be limited by four hops and is independent of the number of layers. Subsequently, another agile and cost-effective server-centric architecture, termed JieLin, is proposed. JieLin not only is highlighted by its excellent scalability of O(n*(an)^(k−1)), but also demonstrates high performance in bisection bandwidth, fault tolerance and average path length. Furthermore, in response to the critical shortcomings of the server-centric architectures, we then propose an effective hardware based approach to solve these issues and improve the network efficiency. Afterwards, we design two torus-based DCN architectures named NovaCube and CLOT, where the torus topology well implements the network locality forming the servers in close proximity of each other, which increases the communication efficiency. Moreover, in the highly multiplexed shared cloud data centers, in order to efficiently share the physical network resources among multiple tenants that have diversiﬁed virtual network topologies with different network characteristics, in this thesis we then propose an efficient online heuristic virtual network embedding framework called Presto, adopting an artiﬁcial intelligence resource abstraction model named Blocking Island. Presto operates with quite low computation complexity and greatly reduces the search space, which far outperforms other candidates. The goal of Presto is to maximize the economic revenue of infrastructure providers and increase the resource utilization while minimizing the embedding cost.
