▼ Academic libraries have been in existence for many years and formed their own peculiar cultures in dynamic environments. The objectives and goals of the parent institution under which an academic library serves determines the library’s purpose and function. Academic libraries operate in ways that are largely influenced by their prevailing cultures. Within these cultures are beliefs, values and norms that guide how employees and management behave and do things which lead to attainment of goals and objectives in the libraries. The main objectives of this study of organizational culture in academic libraries in Ghana are to investigate the level of autonomy in university libraries, the type of organizational structure that exist, how supportive supervisors are toward subordinates, the degree to which members of the library share the same values, beliefs and norms, the relationship between organizational performance and reward system, effect of internal conflicts on staff morale and productivity and the extent to which staff are encouraged to take risk and be innovative. The study employed the survey methodology, and the main data collection instrument was a questionnaire administered to library staff in the Balme and Prempeh II libraries at the University of Ghana and Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology. The data was analyzed descriptively by using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) software. Two hundred and ten (210) copies of the questionnaire were administered, and out of that, one hundred and seventeen (117) were returned, thus giving a response rate of 55.71%. The findings showed that library staff in Balme and Prempeh II libraries at the University of Ghana and Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology have freedom to perform their duties without any strict supervision; supervisors foster an organizational culture that promotes learning and creativity among subordinates; some decisions are solely taken by supervisors; values, beliefs and norms are not well communicated to staff; supervisors encourage team work among subordinates; library staff in UG receive regular performance reviews than library staff in KNUST; and unproductive staff are queried while productive staff are commended for good performance. It is recommended that regular performance reviews must be conducted in the libraries as well as communicating values to library staff to know what must be done and how to behave at the workplace.

▼ Today, librarians are confronted with new roles during the execution of their work. The emerging roles require practical and technical skills, professional competencies and ability to perform and to constantly be in touch with those emerging technologies to stay afloat. The purpose of this research was to investigate the changing roles of academic librarians at the University of Nairobi (UoN) and its constituent college libraries in the current information age so that challenges can be established and measures put in place to overcome them. The current study employed both qualitative and quantitative approaches. The study was descriptive in nature and a survey research method was adopted. Purposive sampling was used to select respondents from each of the 13 libraries. Data was collected using a questionnaire and an interview schedule. A population of 70 respondents was to be surveyed but only 54 of them responded to the questionnaire. Quantitative data was descriptively analysed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) while qualitative data was analysed using content analysis. The study revealed that the role of librarians at the UoN has not necessarily changed in terms of duties, responsibilities, functions and processes, but what has changed is the intensity and manner of conducting the role. The main challenge remains that of re-training of staff in the use of Information Communication Technologies (ICTs). Therefore the study recommended training of staff in the use of ICTs, acquiring powerful servers to increase bandwidth connectivity and allocating more funds towards various activities. The study recommends that a similar research be replicated using different groups of librarians, for example those who started working when the services were already automated to find out whether they are also as challenged as their counterparts. A further research should also be carried out to investigate current jobs that exist elsewhere in the profession, such as knowledge management, ICT management in libraries, research data management and data curation. ▼ Developments in the field of information technology have led to a great change in the collection development and service structure of libraries. In recent times, libraries, especially academic libraries, are not only seen with print and non-print resources but also with scholarly electronic journals. Scholarly electronic journals in reality have become one of the most used technological innovations in modern times and also the backbone of many academic institutions. The main focus of the study was to compare awareness, accessibility and utilization of scholarly electronic journals by the academic staff of Garden City University College (GCUC) and Christian Service University College (CSUC), Kumasi. The study also sought to determine factors affecting electronic journal usage and limitations in accessing and using scholarly electronic journals. The survey method was used and questionnaire was also used as the main instrument. The entire population of one hundred and eighty-seven (187) was used. The findings revealed low awareness and accessibility levels as well as under-utilization of scholarly electronic journals in both university colleges. No statistically significant relationship was found between gender and usage of scholarly electronic journals at a p-value of 0.354 which is greater than the significant level of 0.05. No statistically significant relationship was found between age and usage of scholarly electronic journals at a p-value of 7.159 which is greater than the significant level of 0.05. No statistically significant relationship was found between other factors including differences in discipline, educational level, computer skills and age at a p-value of 7.159, 5.308, and 0.504 respectively which are all greater than the significant level of 0.05. However, a statistically significant relationship was found between awareness and usage of electronic journals. The study recommends awareness creation, training, provision of more relevant electronic journals, infrastructure, quality staff and sustenance to ensure maximum access and use of scholarly electronic journals in GCUC and CSUC and also to commensurate the investment made in them. When academic libraries integrate ICTs in their services they play an important role in teaching and learning. It is for such reasons that KENET sought to establish an ICT infrastructure to network Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in Kenya, and to facilitate the use of Internet Technology in teaching, learning, research and sharing of information resources at an affordable cost. The University of Eastern Africa, Baraton (UEAB) and Kenyatta University (KU) libraries in Kenya are both members of the Kenya Education Network (KENET). This study investigates the main features of ICT use by a public and a private university library in Kenya in support of formal and informal teaching and learning. The study includes three target groups, namely: third year undergraduate students, library committee members, and library managers. Data was collected through self-administered questionnaires, interviews, and site visits. The four main issues considered were: ICT infrastructure, access and use of ICTs, ICT usage patterns, and students learning outcomes. The study concludes that: There is inadequate ICT infrastructure, specifically library networks and computers, at Kenyatta University. Access to and use of ICTs is affected by the lack of access skills, and there is a need for training in this area. ICT usage differs, with Kenyatta University students lagging behind UEAB students. Student learning outcomes are diverse; UEAB students benefited from the use of library e-resources to meet their formal and informal learning needs, and Kenyatta University students did not benefit at all. The study also concludes that the implementation of ICTs in Kenyan HEI libraries, through the provision of adequate infrastructure and funding, the development of ICT policies, and the development of Information Literacy (IL) programmes for students, will ensure that ICTs play an important role in academic support for formal and non-formal teaching and learning. ▼ Knowledge management (KM) is increasingly becoming important for organisations to enhance their competitive advantage, performance and to become more effective. Academic institutions and academic libraries, in particular, have come to the realisation that they too can benefit from knowledge management and are increasingly looking to adopt appropriate means to effectively manage their knowledge resources so as to improve the services rendered to their patrons. Knowledge management systems (KMS) are suitable means for academic libraries to manage knowledge and enable the processes of creation, storage, sharing and application of knowledge. While issues related to the design and implementation of knowledge management systems have been widely discussed within various sectors such as the business sector, there is a paucity of research pertaining to KMS implementation in academic libraries yet libraries have started to use several technologies for KM without putting certain issues that are critical to the successful implementation into consideration. Therefore, this study, puts forwards the idea of a KMS in Makerere University Library, exploring several aspects with the aim of discovering how the library can successfully implement a knowledge management system and in so doing explore the readiness of Makerere University Library to implement a KMS. An exploratory study was done adopting the qualitative research approach with Makerere University Library as the case study. The study involved interviews with eight library staff members in the librarian and IT staff categories that were purposively selected to provide information to the study. The major findings from the study revealed that, the majority of library staff at Makerere University Library understand the meaning of knowledge and knowledge management concepts though more training is still needed to clarify these concepts to some staff that do not have a clear understanding of the two concepts. The study also revealed that, the technological infrastructure of the library needs to be updated to support the KMS implementation. Other factors discovered that are key for the successful KMS design and implementation include: library management support, KMS budget, library culture, KM strategy, policies and guidelines, rewards and incentives. The study also identified benefits of a KMS for the library as well as challenges that the library may face in implementing a KMS. Finally, the study puts forward recommendations in the form of strategies for the library to successfully implement a KMS. Advisors/Committee Members: Schutte, Marietjie (advisor).

The aim of this study was to better understand how academics manage their personal information and therefore to have a basis for planning for appropriate support by librarians. There did not appear to be any current relevant research but from a review of previous studies, in which the predominant management strategy included a card personal index, a model was drawn up and validated by a number of academics would be using electronic personal indexes to manage their personal collections. The research methods selected for this study were in-depth interviews and a questionnaire survey. The main findings were that academics do not use a personal index (card or electronic) to manage their personal collections and they also use a language different from that of librarians to describe their activities of personal information management. Academics manage their information by organising their personal collection according to their working subject framework. to expand their collections they work outwards from items of known quality or follow the advice of colleagues to locate such items. To become aware of the new material in the library (or elsewhere), academics prefer to browse new journals and books, rather than use a subject index. Databases are used for confirmation of reference details and citation indexes are used to work outwards from documents of known quality. The output of references is by the use of word processing software with a few academics using bibliographic software just for this function. The conclusion of the study were that academics manage their personal information in a dissimilar way to that expected by librarians. Academics are managing ideas not documents and their methods of personal information management reflect the need to manage these ideas and the associated connective thought process. Librarians can better assist academics by designing library services that facilitate academics' ideas management. Suggestions for improved support include the development of services that enable browsing, the linking of ideas between research publications in different disciplines and the provision of a service to confirm reference details.

▼ The study was undertaken to explore the remote users of services available public university libraries in Kenya. Scarce literature was available locally on the subject of the study. Provision of quality and relevant information services to support teaching, learning and research remains a central objective of libraries in higher education world over. Higher education institutions in Kenya continue to experience unprecedented growth in student population against limited human capital and physical infrastructure, among the library services. This reality has prompted Universities to adopt different education delivery models; distant learning, e-learning, and part time modules to accommodate the extra numbers seeking higher education. Depending on the preferred module, the students can be categorized into three main groups: on-campus, off-campus and remote user groups. Higher learning standards require that all users to have equitable and inclusive access to resources. This study explores the nature and availability of support services and resources available for remote library users in public university libraries in Kenya. The research methodology adopted was a descriptive research design; where qualitative data was collected using Focus Group Discussions (FGDs). The findings revealed that public university libraries in Kenya have various forms of resources and services that can support remote user needs. However they face certain challenges that hinder the use of the available remote user resources and services in providing equitable access to information services to all its types of users. Key among the challenges was that remote users were not identified as a special user group in the libraries studied contrary to what the study grounded. The results of the study are discussed under three main thematic areas: services for remote users, facilities available for remote users, and policies and regulations that govern remote use of library resources. Equally included in the study are discussions, conclusions and recommendations based on the findings besides identified informational gaps for further research. ▼ This study was conducted to assess the Utilization of Information and Communication Technology Facilities for Research Output in Ghanaian Academic Libraries with a focus on the University for Development Studies (UDS) Library systems. The UDS has four satellite Campus libraries in the three northern regions which comprised the sample of the study. The aim of the study was to inquire into the utilization of information and communication technologies in academic library services in Ghana and its level of utilization for research output by postgraduate students. The population of the study was two hundred and fourteen (214) which comprised one hundred and fifty (150) post graduate students’ respondents and sixty-four (64) professional and paraprofessional librarians. The descriptive research design was employed for the study with both qualitative and quantitative research strategies, questionnaire, structured interview schedule and observation checklist were the data collection tools used and administered to 150 respondents. Stratified sampling technique was used in choosing the sample. Relevant literature and statistics on the topic areas and secondary data were reviewed to support primary data collected. Data were analyzed qualitatively in narratives and with charts, graphs, tables, and matrices Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) software version 22, and Excel were used for the analysis. The findings revealed that, despite the seeming availability of electronic information resources in the universities as well as their benefits to university education, their effective utilization by students and faculty have been hampered by several factors such as students making low level use of electronic information resources in the library, some students not aware of the kinds of information and services that are available, do not know the source of this information as well as cannot trace and retrieve information through the use of these technologies due to being information illiterate and lack the technical knowledge. Also, lack of skilled ICT personnel and that library staff need to obtain continuous training on ICT to advance their skills so that they can easily impart the skills and information they have attained to their users. ▼ Information literacy is a skill and forms the basis for life-long learning. The aim of this study is to investigate the information literacy skills of first year students at the Vaal Triangle Campus of the North-West University (NWU), with specific reference to the role of the academic library. The NWU‟s Vaal Triangle Campus Library supports first-year students in their studies by helping them to improve their information skills and teach them to find, evaluate and organise information in different formats. The purpose of this is to help first-year students to find relevant information that meet their information requirements. Students who are information literate not only have the necessary skills; but also have insight, comprehension, and knowledge at their disposal, while being life-long learners. A compulsory literacy module forms part of the curriculum for first-year students at the NWU‟s Vaal Triangle Campus, and is presented by academic staff. The credit-earning module (known as AGLE 121) consists of three components, namely computer and information literacy, reading literacy, and academic literacy. This study focuses on the module for basic information literacy, which is mainly of a theoretical nature. First year students were tested by questionnaires and interviews before and after completion of the information literacy module, to determine what contribution the module makes to their information literacy. This studyconcluded that after completing the information literacy module, first-year students have the theoretical knowledge at their disposal, but still do not know where to find databases or information. The role of the campus library regarding information literacy is to expand and improve students‟ information skills as well as being involved in the planning and development of the information literacy module. A recommendation is made that the information literacy module should already be offered during the first semester (instead of the second semester), so that students can use their information skills effectively for their studies. ▼ Knowledge management (KM) has become a vital process in all types of institutions in our society, institutions that also include academic libraries. Furthermore, academic libraries have become an integral part of the knowledge system. These institutions and academic libraries contribute to knowledge development in the current digital age. This study sought to investigate knowledge management processes at St Paul’s University library and to suggest ways by which these processes may be enhanced in order to promote efficiency and effectiveness in knowledge management. The study was based on knowledge management processes that include knowledge capture, knowledge acquisition, knowledge organisation, knowledge creation, knowledge retention and knowledge sharing as advanced in existing literature. The context of this study was St. Paul’s University Library, the academic library of St. Paul’s University. St. Paul’s University is an academic institution of higher learning based in Limuru Kenya. St. Paul’s University Library was found to be encountering challenges in the implementation and adoption of formal knowledge management processes such as knowledge creation, knowledge application, knowledge retention, knowledge acquisition, knowledge organisation and knowledge sharing. These challenges affect the library’s ability to manage and disseminate knowledge to its different stakeholders. This research thus set out to address these challenges. This was a case study of St. Paul’s University library which involved the collection of qualitative data from study participants through the use of interview guides. In the study, interviews were used to collect data from 10 library management committee members, 20 faculty staff and 20 library staff. These three groups of study participant were purposively selected as the target population for the study because they play a key role in knowledge management enhancement at St. Paul’s University library. Interviews were conducted for all categories of participants separately through face-to-face interview method based on their pre-determined availability. Out of 50 interviewees, only 32 were successfully interviewed. Qualitative data collected were analysed using content analysis. Findings of this study were then deduced from analysis done. From the study, it emerged that all the knowledge management processes under study were utilised albeit to varied degrees. From the study, varied gaps were noted on the various knowledge management processes and the use of ICT in knowledge management. The study recommends that St. Paul’s University Library should fully incorporate all the knowledge management processes and ensure appropriate policies be in place to support knowledge management and also increase effectiveness and efficiency in the library. The study further recommends a survey study on academic libraries to be undertaken on knowledge management processes in Kenya. Advisors/Committee Members: Fombad, Madeleine C (advisor).

▼ Although electronic books are becoming a common place globally, they are not necessarily as widely used as other e-resources due to non-familiarity by many users. Academic libraries are important research centres, supporting the research activities of all disciplines, and seeking to establish and cultivate initiatives which address research output challenges. Traditionally, libraries are the best agencies for collecting, organizing and preserving print information resources for effective use, and for the advancement of knowledge. However, the evolution of electronic information resources and electronic books, has forced librarians in developing countries to rethink collection development policies, and to assess accessibility and convenience. The period since 2005 has seen growth in print and electronic resources, and the development of new clientele relationships, which has changed user information needs as a result of the development of an advanced modern electronic networked environment, that supports the distribution of information content and facilitates its use. The purpose of this research was to conduct a case study research in the University of the Witwatersrand, to explore the use of e-books among undergraduate students in its Faculty of Engineering, to assess levels of e-book use; attitude and perception, check user viewpoints on favourable and unfavourable characteristics of e-books; whether there are any preferences for print versus e-books; the impact of e-books on studies; the purpose they choose to use or not use e-books and to assess any challenges. This study utilised questionnaire and interviews to collect data. The findings indicate that Wits engineering students have preference for print; however, e-books are essential as complementary resources for research. The slow uptake can be attributed to various challenges such as lack of awareness among students; inadequate technology infrastructure; intermittent power outages; different platforms requiring passwords; eye fatigue while reading on the screen; lack of subject specific e-books, and publisher restrictions. The study concludes that it is essential to involve the faculty and lecturers, to increase awareness and usage amongst specific target population. Advisors/Committee Members: Underwood, Peter G. As bibliotecas são espaços de preservação do patrimônio intelectual, literário, artístico e científico das sociedades e apresentam uma relação indissociável com as universidades. Através das bibliotecas, acessa-se o conhecimento produzido pelo ser humano e aprimorado no ambiente universitário. A presente dissertação apresenta uma narrativa da história e das experiências da Biblioteca Central da Universidade de Caxias do Sul e propõe uma reflexão sobre a contribuição desta Biblioteca na formação acadêmica. Para tanto, analisa o papel da biblioteca universitária enquanto espaço de aprendizagem e a sua relação com o sucesso acadêmico dos estudantes. A construção do contexto histórico fundamentou-se em estudos vinculados à História Cultural. A Biblioteca Central da Universidade de Caxias do Sul foi criada em 1970 e, no decorrer de 44 anos de história, passou por diversas transformações em seus espaços e acervo, visando atender as exigências legais e as demandas da comunidade acadêmica, bem como adequar-se às novas tecnologias da informação. Muitas das transformações relacionam-se com a promulgação do Decreto nº 2.026/1996, que estabeleceu os procedimentos para a avaliação dos cursos e instituições de ensino superior, e, no que se refere às bibliotecas universitárias, acarretou o aperfeiçoamento das instalações físicas e dos acervos. Considerando que biblioteca, universidade e conhecimento estão intrinsecamente relacionados, a dissertação realiza uma análise das bibliotecas enquanto espaços de aprendizagem. A fundamentação teórica sobre o processo de aprendizagem foi feita a partir dos estudos de Lev Vygotsky, bem como sobre a biblioteca com um espaço de aprendizagem e sua relação com o sucesso acadêmico baseado em diversos autores da área. Quanto à relação entre a utilização da Biblioteca Central da Universidade de Caxias do Sul e o sucesso acadêmico, realizou-se uma entrevista semiestruturada com nove alunos laureados pela Universidade entre os anos de 2005 e 2012. Esta entrevista objetivou verificar, através dos depoimentos e narrativas dos alunos egressos, a contribuição da Biblioteca para o seu sucesso acadêmico. Além das entrevistas, pesquisaram-se dados relativos à média acadêmica e ao número de empréstimos realizados pelos entrevistados laureados e seus colegas de turma. A partir das entrevistas, verificou-se que a importância da Biblioteca é atribuída subjetivamente, em decorrência das experiências pessoais daqueles que vivenciam seus espaços. Dentre os diversos ambientes não formais de aprendizagem, a Biblioteca destaca-se, pois há intencionalidade no seu uso, ou seja, as pessoas que a frequentam , o fazem por vontade e iniciativa próprias. A análise dos dados relativos à média acadêmica e ao número de empréstimos mostrou que há uma relação entre estas duas variáveis, sugerindo que a Biblioteca contribui para o sucesso acadêmico.
