Diese Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit der Bedeutung der Skulptur Buddhas aus Sicht thailändischer buddhistischer Mönche und deren Meinung hinsichtlich einer sinnstiftenden musealen Präsentation. Diesbezüglich wurde eine Feldforschung in einem buddhistischen Tempel in Südthailand durchgeführt. Zur Datenerhebung diente neben qualitativen Leitfaden-Interviews und teilnehmender Beobachtung die Methode der Fotografie. Insbesondere spielten informelle Gespräche eine wichtige Rolle im Forschungsprozess. Im Folgenden sind die Ergebnisse der Analyse der gesammelten Daten kurz dargestellt: Die befragten Mönche nehmen die Skulptur Buddhas als Hilfsmittel zum Verstehen und Anwenden der buddhistischen Lehre und Lebensweise und somit als Wegweiser zu einem glücklichen, vom Leid befreiten, Leben wahr. Diese Bedeutungszuschreibung kann jedoch nur durch einen Prozess des Verstehens, der auf intellektuellem Studium, meditativer Praxis und Anwendung der buddhistischen Lehre im täglichen Leben beruht, nachvollzogen werden. Die Meinung der Informanten bezüglich der Ausstellung der Skulptur Buddhas im Museum hängt von der Absicht sowie der Art und Weise der Vermittlung ab. So soll die Skulptur Buddhas nicht als Kunstwerk im Sinne eines formalästhetischen Kunstbegriffes präsentiert werden, sondern gemäß ihrer originären Bedeutung als Symbol und Medium bzw. Hilfsmittel und Wegweiser vermittelt werden, um interessierten BesucherInnen, unabhängig von Kultur und Religion, das Verstehen der buddhistischen Lehre und Lebensweise auf intellektueller Ebene zu ermöglichen. Die Bezeichnung „Kunstwerk“ wird jedoch nicht abgestritten. Im Hinblick auf einen symbolischen Kunstbegriff wird die Skulptur Buddhas als besonderes Kunstwerk - als ein Kunstwerk zur Überwindung des Leides - wahrgenommen.

This thesis deals with the meaning and significance of the sculpture of Buddha from the perspective of Thai Buddhist monks and their views regarding a meaningful presentation at the museum. In this regard, an ethnographic field research was conducted in a Buddhist temple in southern Thailand. For data collection the method of photography was applied in addition to qualitative semi-structured interviews and participant observation. In particular, informal discussions played an important role in the research process. In the following the results of the analysis of the collected data are presented briefly: The interviewed monks use the Buddha sculpture as a tool for understanding and applying the Buddhist teachings and way of life and thus perceive it as a guide to a happy life, which is relieved from the suffering. This attribution of meaning may be comprehended only through a process of understanding, which is based on intellectual study, meditative practice and application of Buddhist teachings in everyday life. The opinion of the informants on the issue of the sculpture of Buddha at the museum depends on the intention and the way of mediation. Aufbauend auf dem Verständnis von Behinderung nach der ICF, in der Behinderung als Zusammenspiel von einer Person mit einer Schädigung und der Umwelt erfasst wird, wird in dieser Arbeit der Frage nachgegangen werden, was in Museen in Wien für Menschen mit Hör- bzw. Sehbeeinträchtigungen getan wird, um Barrieren für diese Besucher/-innen abzubauen und um ihnen die Teilhabe am kulturellen Geschehen zu ermöglichen. Menschen mit Hör- bzw. Sehschädigungen sind in der auditiven bzw. visuellen Wahrnehmung eingeschränkt. Der reduzierte Zugang zu Informationen, der in weiterer Folge Menschen mit Hör- bzw. Sehbeeinträchtigungen auch von Lebensbereichen ausschließen kann, stellt Barrieren dar. Diese Barrieren können abgebaut werden, indem unterstützende und fördernde Maßnahmen bereit gestellt werden, welche die eingeschränkte Wahrnehmung kompensieren. Sowohl die auditive als auch die visuelle Wahrnehmung stellen zentrale Informationsträgerinnen in Museen dar. Die üblichen Angebote reichen daher für diese Besucher/-innen meist nicht aus. Es bedarf ergänzender bzw. alternativer Angebote, um Menschen mit Hör- bzw. Sehbeeinträchtigungen die Teilhabe im/am Museum. Im Rahmen einer Erhebung, in der in erster Linie Museumsmitarbeiter/-innen mit der Methode des Experten- bzw. Expertinneninterviews befragt werden, wird aufgezeigt, was in Museen in Wien getan wird, um Menschen mit Hör- bzw. Sehbeeinträchtigungen den Zugang zum Museum und zu dessen Ausstellungen zu erleichtern bzw. erst zu ermöglichen.

Based on the ICF definition of disability, which regards disability as the interaction between a person with an impairment and his or her environment, this paper investigates the question which measures are taken in museums in Vienna for people who are hard of hearing or deaf or visually impaired to enable them to participate in the cultural program at offer. People who are hard of hearing or deaf or visually impaired have limited acoustic or visual perception. This imposes limited access to information and thus barriers, which can subsequently lead to the exclusion of people who are hard of hearing or deaf or visually impaired from all realms of life. These barriers can be removed by offering measures which support and promote the compensation of such limitations in perception. Acoustic and visual elements are both essential information carriers in museums. The conventional program of museums is thus inadequate for visitors with any of the above impairments. Additional and alternative offers are necessary for people who are hard of hearing or deaf or visually impaired to make participation within and with the museum possible. A survey, in which predominantly museum staff were questioned using the expert interview method, presents the measures taken in Vienna‟s museums to facilitate or enable access to museum programs for people who are hard of hearing or deaf or visually impaired.

Die vorliegende Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit der Bedeutung von Kawung und Parang Batik in den Kostümen der javanischen Wayang Golek Puppen. Diese sind dreidimensionale Holzpuppen, welche mit aufwendiger Bemalung und Kostümierung versehen sind, wobei für den Unterteil (Kain) oft Batikstoffe verwendet werden. Wayang Golek und Batik gehören zu den traditionellen Hohen Künsten der zentraljavanischen Königshöfe, wo sie Statussymbole darstellen. Kawung und Parang sind alte, klassische Batikmuster und sowohl in der in der höfischen Kleidung, als auch in den Kostümen der Wayang Golek Puppen sehr verbreitet. Ausgehend von einer Beschreibung der traditionellen javanischen Gesellschaftsstruktur, sollen das Wayang Golek und die Batikkunst und deren gesellschaftliche Bedeutung herausgearbeitet werden. Angaben zu den Gestaltungs- und Kostümierungsgewohnheiten im Wayang Golek sollen in einer Analyse von fünf Puppen aus der Sammlung des Museums für Völkerkunde Wien (MVK) angewandt werden. Als theoretische Grundlage dient zur Analyse der Puppenkostüme der Ansatz „Kleidung als Sprache“ und nachdem sowohl das Wissen über Wayang Golek als auch über Batik traditionell mündlich weitergegeben wird, soll ergänzend der Begriff „Oral Tradition“ erläutert werden. Neben einer ausführlichen Literaturrecherche wurde eine exemplarische Analyse fünf ausgewählter Wayang Golek Puppen aus der Sammlung des MVK vorgenommen. Ergänzend wurden, vor Ort in Java mittels Teilnehmender Beobachtung und Interviews gesammelte Informationen, verwendet.

The thesis at hand deals with the role of Kawung and Parang Batik in the costumes of Javanese Wayang Golek puppets, which are three- dimensional wooden puppets, elaborately painted and costumed using Batik for the skirt (Kain). Wayang Golek and Batik are traditional High Arts of the central Javanese courts, where they serve as status symbols. Kawung and Parang are old, classical Batik patterns and are common in court dress, and the Wayang Golek puppet costumes. Beginning with a description of the structure of traditional Javanese society, the Wayang Golek and Batik, and in particular their role in society will be presented. Information concerning the decoration and costumes of the Wayang Golek puppets will be used for an exemplary analysis of five Wayang Golek puppets from the collection of the Museum of Ethnology in Vienna (MVK). The theory “Clothing as language” serves as the theoretical foundation for the analysis of the puppet costumes. Since the knowledge about Wayang Golek and Batik is transmitted orally from generation to generation, the term “Oral Tradition” is also examined. In addition to extensive literature research an exemplary analysis of five Wayang Golek puppets from the collection of the MVK was carried out. Furthermore, some data, which was obtained during participatory observation and interviews in Java, was used.

Im frühen 21. Jahrhundert fand das Thema Museum und Identität verstärkt Eingang in die Forschung. Dabei lag der Schwerpunkt auf europäischen und amerikanischen Museen, während Ostasien in diesem Zusammenhang bisher kaum untersucht wurde. Der Fokus der Arbeit liegt auf der Konstruktion chinesischer Identität am Beispiel von drei China-Ausstellungen in deutschen Museen, die seit den 1990er Jahren gezeigt wurden. Folgende Fragen werden untersucht: 1) wie wird die chinesische Identität durch die inhaltlichen Schwerpunkte (Objekte) der Ausstellungen konstruiert, 2) welche Diskurse werden in den Ausstellungskatalogen und in der Medienberichterstattung (Texte) über die Ausstellungen verwendet. Die Analyse konzentriert sich auf drei Ausstellungen, die aus einer Zusammenarbeit des Palastmuseums Beijing und Museen in Mannheim, Dresden und Köln entstanden sind. Ausstellungskataloge und Medienberichte werden diskursanalytisch untersucht, wobei Benennung, Beschreibung und Klassifikation der Objekte im Zentrum der Analyse stehen. Die Analyse zeigt, dass der kunstgeschichtliche/künstlerische Wert der ausgestellten Objekte für die Gestalter der Ausstellungen zunehmend im Mittelpunkt steht.

Research on museum and identity has increased vastly since the early 21st century, yet most studies focus on European or American cases while those of East Asia, or more specifically, of China, are underrepresented. As one of the world’s most important economy at the present time, China, along with Chinese identity and the representation of Chinese identity through museum exhibitions, is of rising importance. The paper focuses particularly on the construction of Chinese identity in German museums. It aims at unveiling the poetics and politics of exhibiting Chinese identity in German museums throughout the years of 1990-2016, by exploring the following research questions: 1) how is Chinese identity constructed through classification and 2) how is Chinese identity constructed through display, mainly verbal representation. Three overseas exhibitions cooperated by Palace Museum (Beijing) and German museums in Mannheim, Dresden and Cologne within the period of 1990-2016 are analysed. The study is mainly based on primary source of exhibition catalogues and online media reports, which are examined qualitatively and quantitatively through the method of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA). Specifically, an analysis on classification strategy, object-naming strategy and object-introducing strategy of the three exhibitions is carried out. These analyses demonstrate an increasing emphasis on the art value of the exhibited objects.

Das städtische Erbe Wien's ist tiefgreifend von Habsburg-Nostalgie beeinflusst, einschließlich einer Fülle von Bezügen auf die Belagerung Wien's durch die Osmanische Armee in 1529 und 1683. Die zweifältige Erinnerung an sowohl die Gefahr als auch die Besiegung der 'Türken' förderte ein beeindruckend beständiges Feindbild, welches über die Jahrhunderte hinweg flexibel angepasst wurde. Mit dem Abschluss des Anwerbe- und Beschäftigungsabkommens zwischen Österreich und der Türkei sind in the 1960er Jahren vermehrt MigrantInnen von der Türkei nach Wien gezogen. Während sie dazu beitrugen Wien nach den Zerstörungen des Zweiten Weltkriegs wiederaufzubauen und wiederzubeleben, oftmals wortwörtlich als BauarbeiterInnen, ist die Amnesie der Stadt gegenüber ihrer Migrationsgeschichten im städtischen Erbe äußerst auffällig. Stattdessen haben MigrantInnen aus der Türkei und ihre Familien, die oftmals an die Stadtränder gedrängt und als 'türkische Erbfeinde' dargestellt werden, damit begonnen verschiedenste Arten der Selbst-Organisation und Selbst-Historisierung auszuüben. Der Argumentation folgend, dass verstärkte migrationsinduzierte Diversität in Stadtgebieten Auswirkungen auf lokal etablierte Erinnerungsnarrative hat, werden in dieser Masterarbeit Initiativen von Individuen, 'Communities' und der Stadtverwaltung sowie deren Herausforderungen Migrationsgeschichten von Wien zu formulieren und miteinzubeziehen untersucht, wie zum Beispiel Ausstellungen. Wie werden MigrantInnen aus der Türkei von dem Gedenken an die Belagerungen beeinflusst? Wie kann sich der Begriff 'Türke', der oftmals mit einer negativen Konnotation verwendet wird, wieder angeeignet werden? Wie überlagert sich dabei das sogenannte 'Türkengedächtnis', einschließlich der Erinnerungen an die 'Türkenbelagerungen' sowie der städtischen Erinnerungen von ArbeitsmigrantInnen aus der Türkei, im städtischen Erbe Wien's heutzutage? Was für Auswirkungen haben diese Überlagerungen auf die Konzeptualisierung von städtischen Räumen in Wien? Wie beeinflussen die Erinnerungen von MigrantInnen die dominanten historischen Narrative und das Erbe der Stadt? Basierend auf ethnografischer Feldforschung, wie Besuchen von Museumsausstellungen, Interviews und Stadtspaziergängen, wird in dieser Masterarbeit Walter Benjamin's Konzept der „Porosität“ als hilfreiches analytisches Werkzeug erachtet, um die heterogenen Lebensrealitäten und die Vielfalt der Erinnerungen der StadtbewohnerInnen, die im städtischen Räumen verwoben sind, zu berücksichtigen. Der Fokus verschiebt sich hierbei von eindeutigen, ausschließenden Erinnerungsnarrativen, die durch den Nationalstaat gefördert und eingeschrieben werden, hin zu einer Pluralität von transnationalen (Gegen-) Erinnerungen nachzeichbar in persönlicher, alltäglicher räumlicher und mnemonischer Praxis, wodurch die verflochtenen Vergangenheiten von Orten deutlich werden.

▼ Im Jahr 2006 habe ich Gelegenheit bekommen, im Museum für Völkerkunde in Wien ein Praktikum im Archiv der Abteilung Fotos und Dokumente zu absolvieren. Die Fotografien werden nur noch selten auf die herkömmliche Art und Weise produziert – die Digitalisierung der Bilder und des Filmes ist heutzutage zum Alltag geworden. Im Rahmen dieser Diplomarbeit beschäftige ich mich mit Fotografien aus den Jahren 1900 – 1906 des polnischen Forschers Bronisław Piłsudski, der als Verbannter und später als Forscher auf der Insel Sachalin die Welt und das Leben der Indigenen fotografiert hat. Ziel meiner Arbeit war es, die fotografische Sammlung Piłsudskis in Wien, die 192 Bilder umfasst, nach Kategorien zu sortieren und mit Text zu vervollständigen, um die Bilder und deren Thematik besser kennen zu lernen. Außerdem zeige ich, dass die Bilder nicht zufällig gemacht wurden, sondern dass Piłsudski als Forscher ganz bewusst die Kamera in seine Forschung integriert hat, um die sich ständig verändernde Welt auf den Bildern zu präsentieren. Obwohl er sich vor seiner Verbannung nicht mit der Ethnologie beschäftigt hat, hat er es unter harten Bedingungen geschafft, sich durch seine ständige und selbstständige Weiterbildung als Forscher zu entwickeln und zu etablieren. Was seine Forschung so wichtig macht ist, dass die von Piłsudski fotografierten und auf den Bildern festgehaltenen Menschen, deren Kultur und Sitten sich sehr verändert haben. Das gesammelte Material von Piłsudski ist oft ausschlaggebend sowohl für die Indigenen als auch für die Forscher, die sich mit dem früheren und dem heutigen Sachalin beschäftigen. Es sollte auch nicht vergessen werden, dass Fotografie heutzutage ein Werkzeug ist, das sehr geschätzt wird in Kreisen der Anthropologen, Historiker und anderer Forscher – das war aber nicht immer so. Um die Jahrhundertwende, als Piłsudski auf Sachalin bei den Indigenen lebte und tätig war, war es nicht so üblich, eine Kamera zu benutzen. Die Bilder sind jedoch alle von ihm aufgenommen worden und mit Titeln beschrieben, dies macht ihn zu einem der Pioniere in diesem Bereich. Meine Arbeit habe ich in mehrere Teile strukturiert die über die Visuelle Anthropologie und ihre Methode, die Biografie von Bronisław Piłsudski und die Sammlung Piłsudski im Völkerkundemuseum in Wien mit Schlussfolgerungen zur Sammlung und sieben ausgewählten Bildbeispielen aus dem Völkerkundemuseum in Wien behandelt.

▼ Aim: The overall aim of the present work is to analyze the dynamics between psychiatric practice and fine art in Brazil from 1920 to 1980 and to classify the institutions created during this period in their novelty. The specific goals were to describe (I) with the help of which protagonists art was used as a clinical application in psychiatry, (II) to show under what circumstances and where the patients could work, (III) to show how the Art applications in psychiatry as an aspect of the treatment of patients were documented and received, (IV) to confront with which medical, social and political preconditions the physicians and artists faced and (V) to investigate, to which institutionalization and institutional critique the new dynamics on the border of art and psychiatry. The following methods were used: (I) systematic literature research, (II) expert interviews, (III) analysis of cinematic material. Results: (I) three medical protagonists were identified: Osório César, Nise da Silveira and Lula Wanderley (II) and three artists: Alice Brill, Almir Mavignier and Lygia Clark. It was only because of the common and unrestrained endeavor of the two groups that defended themselves against the repression of the dictatorship in the 1950s that art studios (César), museums (Silveira) and new freedoms (Wanderley) were institutionalized. (III) Three dynamics were identified that led to the establishment of art in the clinics: the arrival of psychoanalysis in Brazil, the reception of antropofagia in art and psychiatry, and the institutionalization and institutional critique. Conclusions: With the help of the three described dynamics it is shown that the developed therapy methods could only be achieved by blurring the boundaries between physicians and artists. The social and political upheavals in Brazil in the course of the twentieth century created a new situation that, unlike in Europe, made it possible to institutionalize alternative treatments, such as therapy with art, as early as the 1920s. ▼ The painting collection of the Berlin manufacturer, banker, art collector and art dealer Johann Ernst Gotzkowsky (1710-1775) is considered as a foundation of the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, today the largest and most important museum in Russia, which was founded by the Empress Catherine II. 1764. The aim of the thesis is a detailed, comprehensive study of the history and of the existence of the "Russian Collection of Gotzkowsky", which originally consisted of 317 images of Western European artists from Gotzkowsky, most important art supplier of Frederick II., was handed over to the Russian Empress. In addition to these paintings, other paintings are analyzed from its collection and explores their transfer pathways that came in later years in the Hermitage. The dissertation has the character of a monograph about this collection and consists of two parts. The first part deals with the "Russian Collection of Gotzkowsky" in an art-historical- analytical perspective with its political-diplomatic, museums historical and taste history context. The second part of the thesis contains the "Catalogue raisonné" of the "Russian Collection of Gotzkowsky" and presents examples of 252 paintings. Due to extensive research in international archives and in painting collections it was possible to trace the history of painting transfers over the past 250 years in more detail and the collection again to reconstruct. Not at all the works have remained in St. Petersburg. "Russian paintings of Gotzkowsky" can be detected in over twenty collections in the world by research today. In the course of the work it has been possible to identify not only numerous works of new and correct many attributions to the "Russian paintings of Gotzkowsky", but also the context of the delivery of the paintings as a basis of today's collection of the Hermitage by up to now unexplored archival sources. This allows not only the existence of the past and existing collection now more and more precise, but it also opens up new dimensions of the historical image transfer between two states.
