▼ The coupling between subsurface flow and reservoir geomechanics plays a critical role in obtaining accurate results for models involving reservoir deformation, surface subsidence, well stability, sand production, waste deposition, hydraulic fracturing, CO₂ sequestration, and hydrocarbon recovery. From a pure computational point of view, such a coupling can be quite a challenging and complicated task. This stems from the fact that the constitutive equations governing geomechanical deformations are different in nature from those governing porous media flow. The geomechanical effects account for the influence of deformations in the porous media caused due to the pore pressure and can be very important especially in the case of stress-sensitive and fractured reservoirs. Considering that fractures are very much prevalent in the porous media and they have strong influence on the flow profiles, it is important to study coupled geomechanics and flow problems in fractured reservoirs. In this work, we pursue three main objectives: first, to rigorously design and analyze iterative and explicit coupling algorithms for coupling flow and geomechanics in both poro-elasitc and fractured poro-elastic reservoirs. The analysis of iterative coupling schemes relies on studying the equations satisfied by the difference of iterates and using a Banach contraction argument to derive geometric convergence (Banach fixed-point contraction) results. The analysis of explicit coupling schemes result in analogous stability estimates. In this work, conformal Galerkin is used for mechanics, and a mixed formulation, including the Multipoint Flux Mixed Finite Element method as a special case, is used for the flow model. For fractured poro-elastic media, our iteratively coupled schemes are adaptations, due to the presence of fractures, of the classical fixed stress-splitting scheme, in which fractures are treated as possibly non-planar interfaces. The second main objective in this work is to exploit the different time scales of the mechanics and flow problems. Due to its physical nature, the geomechanics problem can cope with a coarser time step compared to the flow problem. This makes the multirate coupling scheme, the one in which the flow problem takes several (finer) time steps within the same coarse mechanics time step, a natural candidate in this setting. Inspired by that, we rigorously formulate and analyze convergence properties of both multirate iterative and explicit coupling schemes in both poro-elastic and fractured poro-elastic reservoirs. In addition, our theoretically derived Banach contraction estimates are validated against numerical simulations. The third objective in this work is to optimize the solution strategy of the nonlinear flow model in coupled flow and mechanics schemes. The global inexact Newton method, combined with the line search backtracking algorithm along with heuristic forcing functions, can be efficiently employed to reduce the number of flow linear iterations, and hence, the overall CPU run time. We first validate…

priori error estimation provides informationabout the asymptotic behaviorof the approximate solution andinformationon convergence rates of the problem. Contrarily,a posteriori
error estimation derives the estimation of the exact errorby employing the approximate solution and providesa practical accurate
error estimation.Additionally, a posteriori
error estimates can be used to steer adaptive schemes, that is to decide the refinement processes, namely local mesh refinement orlocal order refinement schemes. Adaptive schemes offinite element methods for numerical solutions of partial differential equationsare considered standard toolsin science and engineering to achieve better accuracywith minimum degrees of freedom. In this thesis, we focus on a posteriori
error estimationsof mixed finite element methods for nonlineartime dependent partial differential equations.Mixed finite element methods are methods which are based on mixedformulations of the problem. In a mixed formulation, the derivative of the solution is introduced as aseparate dependent variable in a different finite element space than the solution itself. We implement the H
1-Galerkin mixed finite element method (H1MFEM)to approximate the solution and its derivative. Two nonlinear time dependent partial differential equations are considered in this thesis, namely the Benjamin-Bona-Mahony (BBM) equation and Burgers equation. Our a posteriori
error estimations are based on implicit schemes of a posteriori errorestimations, where the
error estimators are locally computed on each element. We propose a posteriori
error estimates by using the approximate solution produced by H1MFEMand use the a posteriori
error estimates to compute the local
error estimators, respectively for the BBM and Burgers equations. Then, we prove that the introduced a posteriori
error estimates are accurate and efficient estimations of the exact errors. The last part of this study is on numerical studies of adaptive meshrefinement schemes for the two equations mentioned above.By implementing the introduced a posteriori
error estimates,we propose adaptive mesh refinement schemes of H1MFEM for both equations.

A new adaptive modeling of flow and transport in porous media using an enhanced velocity scheme.

▼ Multiscale modeling of subsurface flow and transport is a major area of interest in several applications including petroleum recovery evaluations, nuclear waste disposal systems, CO₂ sequestration, groundwater remediation and contaminant plume migration in heterogeneous porous media. During these processes the direct numerical simulation is computationally intensive due to detailed fine scale characterization of the subsurface formations. The main objective of this work is to develop an efficient multiscale framework to reduce usage of fine scale properties associated with advection and diffusion/dispersion, while maintaining accuracy of quantities of interest including mass balance, pressure, velocity, concentration. Another purpose of this work is to investigate the adaptivity criteria in transport and flow problems numerically and/or theoretically based on
error estimates. We propose a new adaptive numerical homogenization method using numerical homogenization and Enhanced Velocity Mixed Finite Element Method (EVMFEM). We focus on upscaling the permeability and porosity fields for slightly (nonlinear) compressible single phase Darcy flow and transport problems in heterogeneous porous media. The fine grids are used in the transient regions where spatial changes in transported species concentrations are large while a coarse scale problem is solved in the remaining subdomains. Away from transient region, effective macroscopic properties are obtained using local numerical homogenization. An Enhanced Velocity Mixed Finite Element Method (EVMFEM) as a domain decomposition scheme is used to couple these coarse and fine subdomains [85]. Specifically, homogenization is employed here only when coarse and fine scale problems can be decoupled to extract temporal invariants in the form of effective parameters. In this dissertation, a number of numerical tests are presented for demonstrating the capabilities of this adaptive numerical homogenization approach in upscaling flow and transport in heterogeneous porous medium. We have also derived a
priori error estimate for a parabolic problem using Backward Euler and Crank-Nicolson method in time and EVMFEM in space. Next, we have established a posteriori
error estimate in EVMFEM setting for incompressible flow problems. We first propose the flux reconstruction for
error estimates and prove the upper and lower bound theorems. Next, the explicit residual-based estimates and the recovery-based
error estimates with the post-processed pressure are derived theoretically. Numerical experiments are conducted to show that the proposed estimators are effective indicators of local
error for incompressible flow problems.

▼ The focus of this dissertation is in the theoretical and computational analysis of the discretization error indused by finite element methods for plate problems. For the Reissner–Mindlin plate model, regularity results with respect to the loading and a priori convergence estimates for the MITC finite elements are presented. The convergence results are valid uniformly with respect to the thickness parameter. In addition, we prove a local superconvergence result for the deflection approximation of MITC elements, and introduce a postprocessing method improving the accuracy of the approximation. The convergence results are confirmed by numerical computations. For the Kirchhoff–Love plate model, a new family of C0-continuous, optimally convergent finite elements is introduced. Furthermore, we derive a reliable and efficient a posteriori error indicator and verify the results by benchmark computations. Another a posteriori error analysis is performed for the Morley plate element.
Reissner–Mindlin-laattamallille esitetään kuormituksen suhteen lausuttuja säännöllisyystuloksia ja MITC-laattaelementtien a priori -virhearvioita. Suppenemistulokset ovat voimassa laatan paksuusparametrin suhteen tasaisesti. Lisäksi MITC-elementtien taipuma-approksimaatiolle todistetaan lokaali superkonvergenssitulos ja esitetään approksimaation tarkkuutta parantava jälkikäsittelymenetelmä. Suppenemistulokset vahvistetaan numeerisilla esimerkeillä. Kirchhoff–Love-laattamallille esitetään uusi C0-jatkuva, optimaalisesti suppeneva elementtiperhe. Näille elementeille johdetaan luotettava ja tehokas a posteriori -virheindikaattori ja tulokset verifioidaan numeerisesti. Lisäksi suoritetaan a posteriori -virheanalyysi Morleyn laattaelementille.

In the first part of this thesis, we have considered the time-dependent Maxwell's equations in second-order form and constructed discontinuous Galerkin (DG) formulation. We have established a priori error estimates for this formulation and carried out the numerical analysis to confirm our theoretical results. In the second part of this thesis, we have established a posteriori error estimates of this formulation for both semi discrete and fully discrete case. In the third part of the thesis we have considered the time-harmonic Maxwell's equations and we have developed mixed discontinuous Galerkin formulation. We showed the well posedness of this formulation and have established a posteriori error estimates.

to include a
priori information.
The developed method of
incorporating a
priori information was compared to an existing
algorithm based on receive vector translation (RVT). The limitation
of RVT to quadrature
phase shift keying (QPSK) and binary shift
keying (BPSK) constellations was also shown in
its derivation. The
impact of the various symbol sorting algorithms initially developed
for
the sphere decoder on these decoders was also investigated.
The developed a
priori decoders
operate in the log domain and as
such accept a
priori information in log-likelihood ratios
(LLRs).
In order to output LLRs to the forward
error correcting (FEC) code,
use of the
max-log approximation, occasionally referred to as
hard-to-soft decoding, was made.
In order to test the developed
decoders, an iterative turbo decoder structure was used together
with an LDPC decoder to decode threaded algebraic space-time (TAST)
codes in a Rayleigh
faded MIMO channel. Two variables that have
the greatest impact on the performance of the
turbo decoder were
identified: the hard limit value of the LLRs to the LDPC decoder
and the
number of independently faded bits in the LDPC
code.

opisuje nelokalnim uslovima saglasnosti. Dokazana je egzistencija
prebrojivog niza generalisanih rešenja, pri čemu uređeni parovi
sopstvenih funkcija pripadaju odgovarajućim prostorima Soboljeva.
Opisana je struktura spektra i asimptotsko ponašanje sopstvenih
vrednosti. Konstruisana je diferencijska shema za njihovo
rešavanje. Pored transmisionog spektralnog problema, u disertaciji
se razmatraju klase nestandardnih eliptičkih i paraboličkih
transmisionih problema u disjunktnim oblastima.
njihova konvergencija.

▼ The focus of the present thesis is to formulate efficient schemes to solve high-dimensional stochastic ordinary differential equations (SODEs) encountered in stochastic structural dynamics. Most of the methods for the parametric uncertainty analysis of SODEs suffer from the curse of dimensionality. To alleviate it, we investigate a few different methods.
Firstly, we formulate a Generalized Spectral Decomposition (GSD) method for linear SODEs. It is a stochastic Galerkin method proposed to alleviate the curse of dimensionality faced by the classical gPC-based stochastic Galerkin projection scheme. Numerical studies suggest that it is not straightforward to scale the GSD method to large-scale problems since it is a sequential iterative scheme and there is no clear guidance on how to optimize the number of expansion terms.
Secondly, we propose an anchored ANOVA Petrov-Galerkin (AAPG) scheme for linear SODEs. The main idea of the AAPG scheme is to approximate the dynamic response using a Hoeffding functional ANOVA decomposition along with appropriate constraints to ensure the uniqueness of the decomposition. We show that when the test functions in the weighted residual form are chosen appropriately, the original high-dimensional stochastic problem can be decoupled into a sequence of low-dimensional stochastic subproblems that can be solved independently of each other. We also extend the AAPG scheme to nonlinear SODEs and reach the conclusion that the AAPG scheme holds significant potential to alleviate the curse of dimensionality for linear and nonlinear SODEs, as confirmed by numerical studies.
Finally, we carry out a theoretical analysis of the AAPG scheme focusing on a
priori error estimation and computational cost. This analysis motivates the formulation of an adaptive version of the AAPG scheme that enables additional improvements in computational efficiency by reducing the number of subproblems to be solved. Numerical studies on test problems with up to 80 stochastic degrees-of-freedom suggest that the adaptive AAPG can provide a similar level of accuracy as the original scheme while providing a substantial reduction in computational cost.

▼ The non-linear shallow water equations model the dynamics of a shallow layer of an incompressible fluid; they are obtained by asymptotic analysis and depth-averaging of the Navier-Stokes equations. They are utilized in a wide range of applications, from simulation of geophysical phenomena such as river/oceanic flows and avalanches to the study of hurricane simulation, storm surge modeling, and oil spills. As a hyperbolic system of equations, shocks may develop in finite time and therefore an appropriate numerical discretization of these equations needs to be developed. The purpose of this dissertation is to develop and implement a state of the art numerical method to accurately model these equations. Therefore, a well-balanced space-time hybridized discontinuous Galerkin method was developed for our purpose. The method was implemented and tested for several benchmark problems and very promising results were obtained. An a
priori error estimate for the developed method was also obtained with an optimal rate of convergence in an appropriate norm. The estimate obtained is an extension of the existing a
priori error estimates in the literature, first to the case of a system of shallow water equations, second to a hybridized mixed DG method, and third to an arbitrary degree of polynomial in time.

A numerical scheme for rate-independent systems: analysis and realization.

▼ Many materials in the field of continuum mechanics can be considered, at least in parts, as
rate-independent. Such systems are generally driven by external forces and thereby
independent of their speed (rate) but still dependent on their direction. In this dissertation,
we consider rate-independent systems which can be described by means of a, in general,
nonconvex energy and a positively homogeneous dissipation. Both properties in
combination allow the formation of abrupt changes in state, even if the external forces
evolve smoothly. Mathematically speaking, this means that temporal discontinuities (jumps)
may develop. In order to be able to reflect such phenomena, suitable (weak) notions of
solutions are required.
The first section of this dissertation is therefore devoted to the presentation of precisely
such solution concepts and their interrelationship. In addition to the energetic solutions,
which are by now widely known and analyzed, we particularly focus on the so-called
parametrized solutions, the main concept within this thesis.
In the second section of this work, we analyze a scheme that provides a discretization in
time and space based on the well-known local incremental minimization scheme. The main
difference compared to the latter one is that, instead of solving a minimization problem,
only stationary points have to be determined here. This scheme - referred to as local
incremental stationarity scheme (LISS) - is therefore well suited for numerical methods.
Beyond this practical applicability, the convergence analysis for LISS also provides the
existence of parametrized solutions, even in the case of an unbounded dissipation.
Therefore, the local incremental stationarity scheme can also be used to approximate
unidirectional processes, such as those that occur in damage models for example.
In the third section of this work, we then deal with a
priori error estimates for LISS, whereby
we do not incorporate the discretization in space here. A crucial assumption in this context
is the uniform convexity of the energy. Without this, solutions are, in general, not unique
and not continuous, so that convergence rates are not to be expected in this case. With
sufficient convexity assumptions, on the other hand, we derive convergence rates of the
order Ο(√τ) for a general setting and of the order Ο(τ) in case of a semilinear energy. We
also extend the latter result to the so-called locally convex case, in which the solution
trajectory remains in an area of uniform convexity of the energy.
The last section, finally, is devoted to the presentation of a possible realization of the
introduced approximation scheme LISS and to visualize the numerical results. In particular,
we provide several examples that illustrate the theoretical findings of the preceding
sections.

In this work we will consider whether rationalism is compatible with there being a priori knowledge of contingent truths and if in fact there can be such knowledge. In order to do so we will evaluate a series of arguments that composed the discussion of this subject in the last decades ? such as the arguments from Kripke (2012), Hawthorne (2002) and Turri (2011). We will conclude that rationalism is compatible with the existence of a priori knowledge of contingent truths and
that such knowledge can indeed exist.

▼ The present study is concerned with the numerical approximation of solutions of systems of Korteweg-de Vries type, coupled through their nonlinear terms. We construct, analyze, and numerically validate two types of schemes that differ in their treatment of the third derivatives that appear in the system. This difference is fundamental, earning one method the moniker “conservative” due to its preservation, up to round-off error, of a fundamental invariant of the system. The other, slightly more-standard method is called “dissipative” for lack of this property. For both schemes, we prove convergence of a semidiscrete approximation from an a priori perspective and highlight differences in the assumptions required to analyze each scheme. We also derive a posteriori error estimates for the semidiscrete and fully discrete approximations obtained. Finally, we provide numerical experiments that serve to validate the a priori and a posteriori theory. We experimentally contrast the accuracy of the conservative and dissipative schemes when integrations are made over long time intervals. Also, experiments regarding the effectivity of various a posteriori indicators developed for fully-discrete schemes are presented. We experimentally identify particular components of our estimators that provide independent indicators of the spatial and temporal errors. We conclude by providing additional heuristic estimators based on the a posteriori estimates.

Numerical modelling and simulation of interfaces in fluid and solid mechanics are at the heart of many applications, such as cell biology (deformation of red blood cells), petroleum engineering and seismic (reservoir modelling, presence of faults, wave propagation), aerospace and civil engineering etc. This thesis focuses on the approximation of interface and interphase problems in fluid mechanics by means of the NXFEM method, which takes into account discontinuities on non-aligned meshes. We have first focused on the development of NXFEM for nonconforming finite elements in order to take into account the interface between two media.
The analytical solutions of the majority of partial differential equations are difficult to calculate, hence, numerical methods are employed. This work is divided into two parts. First, we study the time dependent Navier-Stokes equations coupled with the heat equation with nonlinear viscosity depending on the temperature known as the Boussinesq (buoyancy) model . Then, numerical experiments are presented to confirm the theoretical accuracy of the discretization using the Freefem++ software. In the first part, we propose first order numerical schemes based on the finite element method for the space discretization and the semi-implicit Euler method for the time discretization. In order to gain time and order of convergence, we study a second order scheme in time and space by using respectively the second order BDF method "Backward Differentiation Formula" and the finite element method. An optimal a priori error estimate is then derived for each numerical scheme. Finally, numerical experiments are presented to confirm the theoretical results. The second part is…

▼ In this thesis we analyse the high-order in time discontinuous Galerkin nite element method (DGFEM) for second-order in time linear abstract wave equations. Our abstract approximation analysis is a generalisation of the approach introduced by Claes Johnson (in Comput. Methods Appl. Mech. Engrg., 107:117-129, 1993), writing the second order problem as a system of fi rst order problems. We consider abstract spatial (time independent) operators, highorder in time basis functions when discretising in time; we also prove approximation results in case of linear constraints, e.g. non-homogeneous boundary data. We take the two steps approximation approach i.e. using high-order in time DGFEM; the discretisation approach in time introduced by D Schötzau (PhD thesis, Swiss Federal institute of technology, Zürich, 1999) to fi rst obtain the semidiscrete scheme and then conformal spatial discretisation to obtain the fully-discrete formulation. We have shown solvability, unconditional stability and conditional a priori error estimates within our abstract framework for the fully discretized problem. The skew-symmetric spatial forms arising in our abstract framework for the semi- and fully-discrete schemes do not full ll the underlying assumptions in D. Schötzau's work. But the semi-discrete and fully discrete forms satisfy an Inf-sup condition, essential for our proofs; in this sense our approach is also a generalisation of D. Schötzau's work. All estimates are given in a norm in space and time which is weaker than the Hilbert norm belonging to our abstract function spaces, a typical complication in evolution problems. To the best of the author's knowledge, with the approximation approach we used, these stability and a priori error estimates with their abstract structure have not been shown before for the abstract variational formulation used in this thesis. Finally we apply our abstract framework to the acoustic and an elasto-dynamic linear equations with non-homogeneous Dirichlet boundary data.

▼ The topic of this paper is an investigation of intellectual intuition as a faculty of the human mind. The aim of this investigation is to draw a strong analogy between the faculty of intuition and the various faculties of empirical sense (vision, hearing, and so on). I begin by examining the phenomenology of intuition, highlighting the similarities between the subjective experience of intuition and empirical sense. I explain these similarities by arguing that both activities are alike in being presentational mental activities. Developing the concept of a presentational activity in general, I examine the relationship between presentations and beliefs formed on the basis thereof. I argue that beliefs based on intuition and sense perception enjoy
prima facie justification proportional to the quality of that presentation. After explaining how beliefs formed on the basis of intuition can err, I spend some time distinguishing intuition-based beliefs from sense-based beliefs by underscoring the
a priori and immaterial nature of intuitions. It turns out that this difference is key to explaining how intuition serves an exalted role in the production of philosophical knowledge. In particular, I argue for a modest epistemic foundationalism in which intuition and sense perception both provide non-inferential justification. After explaining why philosophical knowledge is especially concerned with
a priori knowledge, I concur that intuition, in being the only immediate ground for
a priori knowledge, must serve as the foundation of all philosophy. Finally, I argue that this theory of intuition is capable of protecting philosophy from certain skeptical scenarios in which knowledge might be thought impossible.

▼ The present thesis is on the error estimates of different energy based quasicontinuum (QC) methods, which are a class of computational methods for the coupling of atomistic and continuum models for micro- or nano-scale materials. The thesis consists of two parts. The first part considers the a priori error estimates of three energy based QC methods. The second part deals with the a posteriori error estimates of a specific energy based QC method which was recently developed. In the first part, we develop a unified framework for the a priori error estimates and present a new and simpler proof based on negative-norm estimates, which essentially extends previous results. In the second part, we establish the a posteriori error estimates for the newly developed energy based QC method for an energy norm and for the total energy. The analysis is based on a posteriori residual and stability estimates. Adaptive mesh refinement algorithms based on these error estimators are formulated. In both parts, numerical experiments are presented to illustrate the results of our analysis and indicate the optimal convergence rates. The thesis is accompanied by a thorough introduction to the development of the QC methods and its numerical analysis, as well as an outlook of the future work in the conclusion.

The contingent a priori phenomenon emerged with Kripke, when he pointed out that we are able to know, in specific cases, contingent a priori sentences. After this idea was incorporated into the tradition, some philosophers perceived a great relation between the kripkean examples and the indexical terms. Gareth Evans, for example, argued that such a relation would reveal that kripkean cases would be only superficial and thus not problematic. However, a consequence of Evans¿ theory is that much of our knowledge involving indexicals becomes trivial. Within this debate, the purpose of this text is to explore the contingent a priori, the contingency categories by Evans, and the main consequences of this debate

physicalism. The view is <i>'a posteriori'</i> since it
does not require that everything necessitated by the physical needs
to be <i>a priori</i> necessitated by the physical. It
holds that being in pain is necessitated by the physical, but not
<i>a priori</i> necessitated. In this dissertation I
consider and address three main objections to this thesis. I aim
not to change the premises of opponents but to show that minimal
physicalism is a viable option by developing a way of explaining
away the seeming contradictions.
The first objection I
consider is a descendent of the traditional conceivability
argument. It is claimed that physicalists must be committed to the
view that zombie worlds are not possible, since they hold that the
mental at least supervenes on the physical. David Chalmers claims
that we can conceive of a zombie world, and argues that ideal
primary positive conceivability entails metaphysical possibility.
Therefore, he contends, a zombie world is possible. I respond by
arguing that his ideal primary positive conceivability does not
entail the metaphysical possibility of a situation that we need and
that he cannot ideally positively conceive of a zombie world which
is a minimal physical duplicate of ours.
The second
objection that I consider is the <i>a priori</i>
deducibility argument that is supported by entry-by-entailment
thesis. Frank Jackson and David Chalmers argue that supervenience
thesis entails an <i>a priori</i> entailment thesis and
that the logical supervenience of the mental on the physical
implies <i>a priori</i> deducibility of the mental from
the physical. Thus, they claim that a rich enough story about the
physical nature of our world must <i>a priori</i>
entail the psychological story about our world. I respond by
arguing that the judgment they introduced for the argument is not
<i>a priori</i> but <i>a posteriori</i>,
and that a rich enough story about the physical nature of a world
cannot give us the relevant contextual information that we need for
<i>a priori</i> deduction. I also argue against the
<i>a priori</i> deducibility argument by claiming that
contingent <i>a posteriori</i> contextual information
that links the physical to the psychological cannot be included in
a rich enough purely physical story about a world.
The
third objection that I consider depends on Kripkean modal argument
refined by two-dimensionalism. It is widely accepted that
physicalism has modal commitments. According to this objection,
contrary to scientific discoveries which are necessary <i>a
posteriori</i>, the appearance of contingency between the
mental and the physical, whether the relation is identity or
supervenience, are real, since the relation between the mental and
the physical is not…

priori for Network Enhancement".

In fluid mechanics, specifically in turbulent processes, the closure problem represents one of the biggest challenges for anyone interested in this area. For decades, scientists have been using statistical approaches aiming to close the problem or, at least, decrease the inherent difficulties. So, the present project presents a judicious analyze based on statistical tools in which random square waves, allied with a fixed numbers of parameters, were used to create parametric equations to represent a turbulent flow with an a priori approach, differentiating from other approaches broadly applied in the area, which use an a posteriori approach. Then simulations were done, in order to evaluate the behavior of the model. In the simulations, the behavior of some data from the literature could be followed and the scope of the method was stipulated. Besides this, an important discussion about boundary conditions was
developed.

The purpose of this thesis is to study the approximation of improper priors by proper priors. We define a convergence mode on the positive Radon measures for which a sequence of probability measures could converge to an improper limiting measure. This convergence mode, called q-vague convergence, is independant from the statistical model. It explains the origin of the Jeffreys-Lindley paradox. Then, we focus on the estimation of the size of a population. We consider the removal sampling model. We give necessary and sufficient conditions on the hyperparameters in order to have proper posterior distributions and well define estimate of abundance. In the light of the q-vague convergence, we show that the use of vague priors is not appropriate in removal sampling since the estimates obtained depend crucially on hyperparameters.

This thesis provides a probabilistic solution to inverse problems through Bayesian techniques. The inverse problem considered here is to estimate the distribution of a non-observed random variable X from some noisy observed data Y explained by a time-consuming physical model H. In general, such inverse problems are encountered when treating uncertainty in industrial applications. Bayesian inference is favored as it accounts for prior expert knowledge on Xin a small sample size setting. A Metropolis-Hastings-within-Gibbs algorithm is proposed to compute the posterior distribution of the parameters of X through a data augmentation process. Since it requires a high number of calls to the expensive function H, the modelis replaced by a kriging meta-model. This approach involves several errors of different natures and we focus on measuring and reducing the possible impact of those errors. A DAC criterion has been proposed to assess the relevance of the numerical design of experiments and the prior assumption, taking into account the observed data. Another contribution is the construction of adaptive designs of experiments adapted to our particular purpose in the Bayesian framework. The main methodology presented in this thesis has been applied to areal hydraulic engineering case-study.

This PHD thesis is devoted to the theoretical and numerical analysis of a stationary fluid-structure interaction problem between an incompressible viscous Newtonian fluid, modeled by the 2D Stokes equations, and a deformable structure modeled by the 1D beam equations. The fluid and structure are coupled via a friction boundary condition at the fluid-structure interface. In the theoretical study, we prove the existence of a unique weak solution, under small displacements, of the fluid-structure interaction problem under a slip boundary condition of friction type (SBCF) by using Schauder fixed point theorem. In the numerical analysis, we first study a mixed finite element approximation of the Stokes equations under SBCF.We also prove an optimal a priori error estimate for regular data and we provide numerical examples. Finally, we present a fixed point algorithm for numerical simulation of the coupled problem under nonlinear boundary conditions.

▼ Waves and circulation processes interact in daily wind and tide driven flows as well as in more extreme events such as hurricanes. Currents and water levels affect wave propagation and the location of wave-breaking zones, while wave forces induce setup and currents. Despite this interaction, waves and circulation processes are modeled separately using different approaches. Circulation processes are represented by the shallow water equations, which conserve mass and momentum. This approach for wind-generated waves is impractical for large geographic scales due to the fine resolution that would be required. Therefore, wind-waves are instead represented in a spectral sense, governed by the action balance equation, which propagates action density through both geographic and spectral space. Even though wind-waves and circulation are modeled separately, it is important to account for their interactions by coupling their respective models. In this dissertation we use discontinuous-Galerkin (DG) methods to couple spectral wave and circulation models to model wave-current interactions. We first develop, implement, verify and validate a DG spectral wave model, which allows for the implementation of unstructured meshes in geographic space and the utility of adaptive, higher-order approximations in both geographic and spectral space. We then couple the DG spectral wave model to an existing DG circulation model, which is run on the same geographic mesh and allows for higher order information to be passed between the two models. We verify and validate coupled wave/circulation model as well as analyzing the
error of the coupled wave/circulation model.

Priori-Verteilung vom Versuchsplan
abhängt. Traditionelle Ergebnisse der klassischen Versuchsplanung
werden auf diese Situation übertragen. Unter anderem werden
notwendige Bedingungen für Optimalität hergeleitet und Schranken
für die maximal benötigte Anzahl an Trägerpunkten
bestimmt.
