▼ Science is dependent on mathematical thinking and mathematical tools but this close and dependent relationship is frequently not reflected in schools or education policy. There have been calls in the literature for school science and mathematics departments to work together more closely for reasons including a perceived overlap of content and to improve students’ use of mathematics in science. This thesis critiques these calls and questions the plausibility of such proposals. In particular, it asks: 1. How and to what extent can mathematics and science educators work together? 2. What are the barriers to effective, mutually beneficial, collaborations between mathematics and science teachers? 3. How might these barriers be addressed? A two-phase qualitative approach was undertaken to explore participants’ experiences and views of the relationship between mathematics and science education. Two distinct groups were approached and interviewed to gain insights into both the policy-making process at a national level and the realities of working in school: those influential in science and mathematics policy-making; and science and mathematics teachers collaborating in schools. The interview data were coded and analysed using thematic analysis. Different theoretical lenses were used to interrogate the data, each providing unique perspectives. They included: power and boundaries, based particularly on the writing of Bernstein; policy, using Bernstein and Ball; the notion of transfer; and the impact of beliefs and identity on curriculum decision making. The findings demonstrate that the dependency in the relationship is asymmetrical: science is dependent on mathematics, but the reverse is not true making it difficult for a truly mutually beneficial relationship to be developed as science will always tend to gain more from any collaboration. This asymmetric dependency is not discussed in other authors’ work on science-mathematics collaboration but would appear to be critical in understanding why collaboration in school is rare and often short-lived.

▼ Research on Ke Ji Guan (one type of Informal Science Institution in China) is very rare, particularly relating to visitors' experiences. In addition to this practical perspective, John H Falk's theoretical framework – "Museum Experience Model" remains applied, tested, and improved in non-American environments. For these reasons I applied it to conduct surveys in Ke Ji Guan to explore who visits Ke Ji Guan, what their motivations are, and whether there are any correlations between visitors' demographics and their identity-related motivations. I employed both quantitative and qualitative approaches within my research. I interviewed three senior Ke Ji Guan experts in China, which resulted in a picture of Ke Ji Guan’s historical development and wider context. Among other conclusions, Ke Ji Guan were identified as an important governmental institution for science and technology popularisation. Quantitatively, I carried out a visitor questionnaire survey (N=1249) in three Ke Ji Guan in Beijing, Shanghai and Shandong. In line with much western Informal Science Institution evidence, the typical portrait of a Ke Ji Guan visitor was female, less than 35 years old, well educated and accompanied by family members. I identified seven visitors’ identity-related motivation categories based on conceptual mapping, they are: Explorers, Facilitators, Experience Seekers, Professional/Hobbyists, Convenience Users, Emotional Connection Seekers, and Pleasure Seekers. Some of them are similar to Falk’s original categories, such as Explorers, Facilitators, Experience Seekers, and Professional/Hobbyists. However, when I conducted an Exploratory Factor Analysis, my data statistically produced another visitor classification scheme: Benefit Seekers, Science-related Fans, Convenience Users, Affirmation Seekers, Opportunists, and Professionals. My results demonstrate that although Chinese visitors share some characteristics with western Informal Science Institution visitors, they also show unique Chinese characteristics. Chinese traditional cultures such as Confucianism do have impacts on visitors' motivations to visit a Ke Ji Guan.

▼ This qualitative study examines science curriculum policy making in Ontario, Canada over four different governments between 1985 and 2008. Each government released new curricula for school science. The purpose of this study was to explore influences that shaped the origins, processes and content of these government-mandated curricula. Since 1985, Ontario’s education reforms encompassed neoliberal trends for standards and accountability measures thereby transforming its education system into an auditable commodity. A policy cycle approach, adapted from Bowe, Ball and Gold (1992), and Vidovich’s (2003, 2001) modifications for macro, meso and micro levels of analysis, provided an analytical framework for this study. A trajectory approach was used to analyse science curriculum policy-making both within a government and to identify patterns, trends and actors across all governments. Document analysis, interviews and focus groups were chosen methods to understand the meaning of events, situations and actions of key actors and texts and to understand the contexts within which science curriculum policy was initiated and developed. Findings indicate that an interplay of global trends and local political arenas have influenced Ontario’s science curricula. Governments responded to the decrease of public confidence in education and the increasing demand for standards and accountability measures by reforming education and its curricula. The science curriculum policy documents reflected these reforms as over time they became more specific and were written as standards; however, the content is reflective of Cuban’s (1992, p.223) notion of the ‘historical curriculum’ in that each curriculum continued to exert influence on successive curricula thereby highlighting a tendency to continue with the traditional.

▼ Education leaders and political leaders worldwide are increasingly placing greater emphasis on developing scientific literacy in response to OECD’s PISA testing. This is also the case in Wales where the results of the 2009 and 2012 scientific literacy tests were significantly lower than the rest of the United Kingdom. This thesis considers interpretations of the term scientific literacy in Wales, including confusion over what the term actually means and an exploration of the potential of renaming it ‘scientific competency’ in order to minimise issues regarding current definition. An alternative definition is considered, in addition to an exploration of the current methods of measuring and improving it within the country. A post-positivist approach was adopted in the research. Data were collected through questionnaires, semi-structured interviews and a case study. The analysis of data revealed that Welsh science teachers often had inadequate skills and understanding regarding scientific literacy and this impacted directly upon their ability to measure and improve it within their lessons. This was due to teachers’ perception of a lack of guidance and training. Although there was substantial consensus about the importance of science and scientific literacy to pupils, this was not adequately translated into scientific literacy practices within schools. Large scale educational reform has led to an emphasis on literacy and numeracy skills, but there has been limited focus on science education. In addition, the Welsh education system and its lack of standardised testing may have produced a lack of rigor within science, leading to a decrease in attainment. The study has implications for the professional development of Welsh science teachers and the general teaching of Science within the country and beyond.

▼ This thesis undertakes the first history of the post-war British telephone system, and addresses it through the lens of both actors’ and analysts’ emphases on the importance of ‘information’ and ‘control’. I explore both through a range of chapters on organisational history, laboratories, telephone exchanges, transmission technologies, futurology, transatlantic communications, and privatisation. The ideal of an ‘information network’ or an ‘information age’ is present to varying extents in all these chapters, as are deployments of different forms of control. The most pervasive, and controversial, form of control throughout this history is computer control, but I show that other forms of control, including environmental, spatial, and temporal, are all also important. I make three arguments: first, that the technological characteristics of the telephone system meant that its liberalisation and privatisation were much more ambiguous for competition and monopoly than expected; second, that information has been more important to the telephone system as an ideal to strive for, rather than the telephone system’s contribution to creating an apparent information age; third, that control is a more useful concept than information for analysing the history of the telephone system, but more work is needed to study the discursive significance of ‘control’ itself.

▼ Communities of repair in Kampala salvage phones; they bring dead ones back to life and rework recycled ones to operate with unfamiliar networks. How do these communities of repair congeal around the mobile phone? How do they form and develop? How is 'repair' understood and negotiated? The 'moment' of mobile phone repair exposes the multi-layered physical and social relationships that underpin mobile telephony in Kampala. Mobile phone workshops provide a rich and productive terrain for thinking about both the sociality and materiality of human-technology relations. Multi-sited ethnographic fieldwork of markets and small, informal businesses will enable the detailed exploration of socio-technical assemblages of mobile phone 'maintenance' and 'repair'. Perhaps the Kampalan 'repair cultures' can also suggest some new approaches towards computing and telephony in mature markets globally, particularly with reference to the growing problem of e-waste. The Ugandan proliferation of mobile repair businesses gives an insight into a new paradigm for computing, where hard and software are left more radically open to upgrade, and companies move towards a role of service provision (Graham and Thrift 2007: 19).

▼ This thesis is a historiography of early cinema in Calcutta and moves away from the received paradigm of ‘national’ cinema to consider the larger transnational framework within which to narrate histories of early cinema. It also positions the city as a critical frame from which early film historiography can be generated. The study maps out the emergence of the Calcutta film industry, from its beginnings in 1897 to the rise of the studios and its stabilisation by the 1930s. In the process the study challenges received film history to reveal a complex, multi-layered and robust film industry in Calcutta that emerged concurrently with Bombay – a narrative that has largely been written out of nationalist discourses of ‘Indian cinema’. The thesis addresses a lacuna in the history of film in South Asia by shifting the focus to Calcutta, from Bombay; by moving away from the film text to focus on institutional history; and by moving from an interrogation of production histories to placing histories of film circulation at the centre of film historiography. This is the first enquiry based on studio records to discuss film history in India in this period. It accesses rare industry documents found in the archives of the Aurora Film Corporation, the oldest surviving film studio in India. The Aurora papers bring to light new evidence on the everyday workings of the film industry in the 1930s, including details of circulation practices and trans-regional networks that inextricably link the three key industries of Bombay, Calcutta and Madras in complex relationships. The Aurora papers also reveal details of transnational circulation amongst the Indian diaspora in the 1930s and broadens the canvas of enquiry into early South Asian cinema. Thereby this study connects the Calcutta industry to other global film production/distribution centres of London and Hollywood, to other film nodes in colonial India – Bombay, Madras, Lahore, Rangoon – and to other film nodes across the Indian Ocean – in Fiji, Singapore, Mombasa and Baghdad.

▼ The turn of the millennium bore witness to a phenomenon: the use of promotion trailers for a variety of products. Both stage theatre and the publishing industries came under the media spotlight for using trailers to promote their wares throwing into sharp contrast the normativity of film trailers. Despite increased academic study of the film trailer, few have considered the trailer outside the industrial context of the film industry. Coupled with this trend in focus, is the tendency within the literature to suggest that the trailer exists as a unique form because they exist in the same medium as the product that promote. Added to this is the tendency to rely on an a priori definition that is not explored fully. By way of intervention with these key issues, this thesis considers the aesthetics and emergence of the trailer in entertainment industries other than film and serves as a counterpoint to the cinema centric imbalance within the study of the trailer. Using a corpus of audiovisual texts identified as trailers through UK press websites, this thesis draws from the popular understanding of the trailer in order to explore the historical and industrial trajectory of these other forms of trailer. Taking the form of case studies organised by the industry in which the trailer's product operates this thesis explores the historical context in which the trailer emerged and the aesthetic trends at work in the current trailer therein. In exploring both the history and the aesthetic representation of the trailer in the industry this thesis moves the study of trailers away from repetitive debates surrounding the film industry and opens up the possibility of trailers as a cultural phenomenon and simultaneous marketing trend. Through providing a grounded understanding of the trailer's use within contemporary entertainment industries, the thesis argues that the term 'trailer' has moved beyond advertising for films. It suggests the trailer has come to typify promotion for any product that is at its core, is an experience. In doing so thesis presents a much needed counterpoint and challenge to cinema-centric analysis of the trailer.

▼ The main purpose of this thesis is to critically analyse the film industry in Taiwan from a political economy perspective and to compare Taiwan’s film industry with that of Hong Kong. The thesis will examine the development of the film industries in Taiwan and Hong Kong in the 1990s and analyse the decline of these film industries. The study takes into account how the governments’ policies have been framed and examines the interaction between the governments and the industries in the 1990s. This thesis will start by expounding the approach of political economy and explain how it will be applied to the study of Taiwan’s film industry. The approach of political economy will provide a historical analysis of the film industry and review the industry’s development in terms of both political influence and economic factors. This approach will provide a more comprehensive study of these film industries. The framework assumes that the development of the film industry in Taiwan has been influenced by government policy and especially government subsidies and that this policy has directed the industry. A film in Taiwan is regarded as an art form, perhaps with a diplomatic purpose, rather than as a commercial cultural product. A film in Hong Kong is mainly made for the commercial market with the purpose of entertaining audiences. The distinction between Taiwanese cinema and Hong Kong cinema provides a diverse view of the Chinese-language film market. After examining the development of the film industry in Taiwan and Hong Kong from a political economy perspective a new image for the Chinese- language film sphere will be discussed. The advantages and disadvantages of the film industry in two places will be summarised and used to provide some suggestions for the future development of “New Chinese Cinema” in the twenty-first century.

▼ The telecommunications sector faces rapid technology changes, which require huge capital investment, changes in rules and regulations, changes in customer behaviour and increasing customer demand. This rapid development directs how the telecommunication service operators deploy their strategies and network infrastructure and continue to evolve their business models. A unique requirement of the telecom industry is the need to manage and deploy planned, unplanned and emergency resources concurrently. The ‘dynamic capabilities’ (DC) approach can be used as a framework to respond to this critical requirement for both managers and researchers. This study has a particular focus on dynamic reconfiguration capabilities (DRC), as these play a critical role in the deployment of strategy. The current literature shows clear limitations regarding how DRC emerge and how they can be used to manage concurrent strategy approaches, which are relevant to the telecommunications sector. Five case studies from a telecommunication service provider are used in this research. Three types of data were collected, namely: 23 interviews, 10 direct observations and over 120 documents. A two-stage coding process is conducted for each case, and causal network diagrams are used to extract findings. A cross-case analysis enabled the identification of the empirical practices relating to the research questions. Findings from the case studies confirm the relevance of several practices previously highlighted in the literature. They also revealed additional practices that support the DRC lifecycle. The case studies are performing most of the practices outlined in the theory of the DRC lifecycle framework, with different degrees of emphasis, especially in the deployment phase. This research extends the current theory by identifying the role of DRC in deploying concurrent strategic approaches. It extends the resource-based view (RBV) and agility theories, which fail to adequately address long-term plans, and collapse when the market is very dynamic. Furthermore, it contributes to the DC literature by identifying the organisational practices that support development, deployment and improvement in the telecommunication industry. Also, it addresses an important gap in the literature by providing organisational practices and evidence of the DRC role to support the concurrent approaches to strategy deployment in the telecommunication industry.

A case study of the application of long run incremental cost models in the Jordanian telecommunications industry over the period 2006-2012 : performance, efficiency and implementation issues.

▼ The thesis examines the impact of the introduction, in 2009, of Long-Run Incremental Costing (LRIC) on the performance and efficiency of the wholesale market of the Jordanian Telecommunications Industry (JTI); an oligopoly industry composed of three, approximately equal sized firms, Orange, Umniah and Zain. Oligopolistic industries are associated with excess returns. The intention of the introduction of LRIC by the JTI regulator was to reduce excess returns and introduce a degree of competition. The research examines the impact of LRIC on performance; comparing two periods pre LRIC 2006-2008 and post LRIC 2010-2012. The data set includes financial accounting data, gathered between 2013 and 2015, from published accounts and primary data drawn from surveys of managers in the three firms, the latter needed to overcome well-known issues of transparency and more importantly the firm’s concern with commercial sensitivity. Analysis of the data revealed that adopting LRIC on pricing and costing apparently had significant impacts on performance; impact varied between measures; sales data (call traffic/volumes) were extrapolated and suggest some impact on competition and market share. Correlations between measures are interesting and not entirely of the order that theory would predict. One suggestion that emerges from correlation/covariance analysis is that performance and efficiency may be more reliably measured by composite measures than independent measures and that heat mapping comparative data is a useful management tool. This thesis draws on a long tradition of cost and cost efficiency analysis in accounting and economics, culminating in the concept of LRIC, which is composed of both. LRIC is really a cost plus measure; an attempt to account for true opportunity costs in a situation where the marginal cost, in this case the cost of an additional call, simply as a variable cost is negligible (and falling with respect to the volume of traffic) but when full opportunity costs are taken into account, they are substantial. IV The data set (population data, JTI is made up of the 3 firms) includes variables grouped under the categories of financial, operational and competitiveness. Variables considered include; rates of return on assets, equity and sales; profit margin, earnings and revenue; capital expenditure; calculated price and cross elasticities, and sales. The data set includes published and unpublished data and data from fieldwork consisting of structured surveys with JTI managers, carried out in 2013-2015. Confidentiality concerns and transparency issues were addressed. This involved the researcher in extrapolation of data especially with reference to sales, mark-up and industry competition. The academic contribution of this thesis is the measurement of the extent of the application of the LRIC model methodology in Jordanian telecommunication firms through tracking the application and development of LRMC through LRIC in a new context (Jordan). Additionally, the impact of the application of the LRIC model methodology on…

▼ In this research, the author proposes a development which contributes towards a knowledge of linking research in diagnosing student misconception in science education and the expert systems technology. Specifically, the thesis will describe the development and evaluation of a prototype diagnostic system to become a supportive tool for classroom teachers. Three topics of electricity, speed and motion graphs, and floating and sinking were selected to explore the use of expert systems technology in diagnostic testing in science. For each topic, the strategy for building the rule-based diagnostic knowledge representation is discussed. The main steps are analysis of past research literature in pupil misconceptions, building a matrix table consisting of various parameters and logical relationship between these parameters, designing the questions for eliciting the understanding and building the rule base. Finally the rule base has to be organised for encoding into a format suitable for inclusion into a generic expert system shell (Leonardo). In general, the two forms of rules contained in the knowledge base are diagnostic rules and the question sequence rules. The diagnostic rule consists of if-then statements which describes the patterns of typical science misconceptions found in the literature. Detection of a specific pattern results in descriptive diagnostic feedback. The question sequence also consists of if-then rules which are used to support the branching of questions according to previous responses. In the topic of floating and sinking, the diagnostic rule makes use of the certainty factors feature of the shell in making a decision. Both school pupils and teachers were used to validate the program. The analysis of pupils' responses suggests that the program is capable of diagnosing pupil's misconception and that new diagnosis rules can be added to the program to cater for new patterns of understanding detected by the system. The teachers responded favourably to a questionnaire regarding the user interface, the accuracy and outcomes of the questions used in the program and the accuracy of the diagnostic feedback provided by the program. In conclusion, within the limitation of the scope of the diagnosis rule base contained in the program, the research shows that such a methodology for using the available expert knowledge is feasible.

Location Based Services (LBS) had been involved to deliver relevant geospatial information based on a geographic position or address. The amount of geospatial data is constantly increasing, making it a valuable source of information for enriching LBS applications. However, these geospatial data are highly inconsistent and contradictory from one source to another. We assume that integrating geospatial data from several sources may improve the quality of information offered to users. In this thesis, we specifically focus on data representing Points of Interest (POIs) that tourists can get through LBS. Retrieving, matching and merging such geospatial entities lead to several challenges. We mainly focus on three main challenges including (i) detecting and merging corresponding entities across multiple sources and (ii) considering the uncertainty of integrated entities and their representation in LBS applications.

▼ It is expected that by 2022, an additional 2.5 million workers with science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) skills will be required globally, although there is a shortfall of around 40,000 STEM graduates per year. Several strategies have been suggested to address this deficit, one of which includes providing STEM outreach activities for school pupils, including interactive STEM workshops, STEM ambassador presentations, master classes, competitions and talks about STEM careers. However, very little research has been conducted that has examined different perspectives and investigated approaches to enhance the delivery, impact and evaluation of STEM outreach. The purpose and significance of this research is to identify and develop an effective STEM outreach model that describes strategies to maximise the efficiency of outreach activities through combining the views of the receiver, facilitator and provider involved in STEM outreach. This research utilised a mixed methods approach. Qualitative data were collected through semi-structured interviews with outreach facilitators (practitioners) and teachers specialising in a range of STEM subjects. Both qualitative and quantitative data were collected through surveys with students of different age groups. The research questions focused on STEM outreach practitioners’ and teachers’ perspectives on a range of areas including how students are selected, target year groups, evaluation methodology and factors influencing the impact of STEM outreach. The research also explores students’ perceptions, understanding and aspirations of STEM subjects, careers and examines the evidence for differences based on gender, ethnicity and whether or not a student had participated in a STEM outreach activity. The key messages that emerge from this study include the importance of dialogue between outreach practitioners, teachers and students. A second important finding is that messages about STEM are most effective by integrating STEM outreach into a school’s ethos and providing all students with an equal opportunity to access the activities provided. Another important finding concerns students’ views on preferred types of activities, which include fun and interactive activities. Gender, ethnicity and participation in STEM outreach activities were found to have significant effect on GCSE and A level students’ aspirations of a STEM career. Conclusions from the research include the proposal that every student should be offered STEM outreach throughout their compulsory education, creating more opportunities to positively influence and inspire them towards STEM education and careers. It is suggested that a generic evaluation tool is developed in order to capture more rigorous and meaningful data. It is also identified that the STEM community should develop a STEM outreach Quality Framework and STEM outreach practitioners training qualification in order to ensure maximum interaction and impact on young people. Finally, to support planning and delivery for future outreach activities, a…

▼ This thesis examines the communication of scientific knowledge. Specifically, it considers the effect of new information and communication technologies (ICTs) on this process. It focuses on the discipline of toxicology, although the findings should be applicable to related subject areas. Toxicology was chosen because it is a rapidly developing, multifaceted subject area, with a rich history of information resources. New ICTs are defined as those computer and telecommunication technologies which have permeated our society from around 1980 onwards. The aim is to define toxicology information at the turn of the millennium, and to predict how its communication processes will progress over the next 5-10 years. This is achieved by examining facets of the discipline, and by researching the changes which have occurred from the inception of the subject, to the present day. Emphasis is on those changes taking place over the past 20 years, as these parallel the contemporary phenomenon of rapid technological advancement in western society. No analysis of this kind has previously been undertaken for toxicology information. The methodology also presents a novel, composite, mechanism for the study and understanding of communication within a discipline. Specific outcomes: A systematic way to identify toxicology resources is defined. A model for toxicology communication in 2002, is derived. Toxicology is found to have changed from being a sub-discipline, to a field in its own right, which exports ideas in addition to importing them. Ways of overcoming deficiencies in retrieval from existing information systems and services are suggested. The effectiveness of available tools for organising and describing toxicology information is assessed, and a three layer model for representation of a toxicology statement is proposed. An understanding of the impact of new ICTs on toxicology communication is gained, which gives insight into possible changes in the near future.

▼ The development of a practical solution to all-optical buffer remains a challenge for high-speed (> 20 Gbit/s) optical networks. Most of the research in the field has concentrated on building test-bed solutions, however the literature review shows little evidence in the use of mathematical models to aid in the design process. This PhD study is an attempt to design and develop a mathematical model of an all-optical buffer suitable for use within optical time division multiplexed systems. The emphasis is placed on recirculating fibre loop buffers because of their inherent storage advantages. The most critical of these advantages is that the storage delay time is independent of the fibre length. While there is a precedent of employing large recirculating fibre loop architectures to simulate ultra-long haul transmission lines in research projects, their use in short length (< 500m) buffering architectures is not prevalent in the literature. This work finds a niche in this domain where the physical effects of the buffer components (e.g. optical switches) have not been previously documented. In order to optimise the bit error rate performance and characterise its dependence on the physical buffer characteristics, the buffer models are designed and simulated in MATLAB and VPI. The associated mathematical models, developed in this work, are validated by the results produced using these simulation packages. The benefit of this research is reflected in the fact that varying the parameters of the mathematical model effectively simulates the changing of physical device characteristics. Consequently, the designing process becomes less arduous, as lengthy simulation times are now reduced. Moreover, as physical implementation can now be delayed until the buffer design is optimised, production cost may be reduced.

▼ The market growth of content and data services in the mobile telecoms industry entails the development of complex industry networks or 'ecosystems'. This research stems from the emerging Location-Based Services (LBS) sector, which has suffered the slow-start dynamics that often belie optimistic forecasts of new technologies. An exploratory and generic industry-level model is developed using the system dynamics simulation modelling approach to explain the start-up problem. This serves as a dynamic theory for the emerging LBS industry market where service diffusion is based on the growth of the installed base of an embedded product. Supply-demand interactions occur through complementary bandwagon effects in which benefits accrue from services that complement the main product. Econometric estimation is compared with system dynamics calibration to test a range of diffusion models on historic data, revealing some evidence of bandwagon effects. The model is proposed as a generic structure for market growth in mobile data services in general and as a tentative theory to explain the phenomenon of technology 'hype' cycles. The model leads to broad policy proposals on how to alleviate the start-up problem. Launching products without attending to service quality can mean that consumers become disillusioned whereas ensuring a high quality user experience requires a collaborative and long-term view of ecosystem development. This implies that major players such as handset manufacturers or mobile operators must play a central co-ordinating role. Validation of exploratory models of emerging markets is based more in terms of plausibility and usefulness, given the lack of historic data. A validation framework in the three dimensions of model content, process and outcome provides a holistic and semi-quantitative profile of the utility of generic models. A validation profile is proposed that can be used in a formative role to clarify model purpose and aid planning in model-based interventions.

▼ A screenplay is sometimes said to be a blueprint for a film, and its genesis and development is therefore important to our understanding of how films are created. Film business studies has traditionally avoided close study of the screenplay development process, perhaps as a result of the film studies emphasis on analysing the text of the completed film, and the auteur theory emphasis on the importance of the director; both of which may have marginalised the study of development and the creativity of development practitioners. Professional screenplay development is a team activity, with creative collaboration between screenwriters, producers, development executives, financiers, and directors. So how does power and creative control shift between members of this team, especially as people arrive or leave? And how does this multiple authorship affect the auteur theory idea that the director is the creative author of the film? This research sets out to open debates around the process and nature of the business of script development, and consider how development practitioners experience, collaborate and participate in the process of screenplay development in the UK today. It uses original interviews, observation and hermeneutic reflection; and asks how cross-disciplinary ideas around creativity, managing creative people, motivation, organisational culture, and team theory could be used to consider how the creative team of writer, producer, director and development executive can work effectively together. It proposes new theories, including defining the independent film value chain and the commitment matrix, analysing changing power relationships during development, and establishing new typologies around film categories and their relationship to funding. The core of this PhD by Prior Publication is the book The Screenplay Business: managing creativity and script development in the film industry. The supporting paper explores the contexts of film industry studies; the film value chain; auteurship and screenplay studies.

In the past decades, the usage of GPS-enabled smartphones has dramatically risen. However, all these usages do not come without privacy threats. Indeed, location data that users are sending to these services can be used to infer sensitive knowledge about them, such as where they live or where they work. This is were protection mechanisms come into play, whose goal is to put users back in control of their privacy. We start by surveying existing protection mechanisms and metrics used to evaluate them. This first analysis highlights a particularly sensitive information, namely the points of interest. These are all the places where users use to spend most of their time. This leads us towards building a new protection mechanism, PROMESSE, whose main goal is to hide these points of interest. Protection mechanisms tend to be configured by parameters, which highly impact their effectiveness in terms of privacy and utility. We propose ALP, a solution to help users to configure their protection mechanisms from a set of objectives they specified. Finally, we introduce Accio, which is a software encompassing most of our work. Its goal is to allow to easily launch location privacy experiments and enforce their reproducibility.

This PhD research work is placed in the domain of Geovisualization used to implement Territorial Intelligence and decision support systems. This research work was born through the establishment of an agreement between Tor Vergata University, Rome, and INSA (Institut National des Sciences Appliquées), Lyon. The co-supervision of this thesis was born from the necessity of a multidisciplinary approach to the research topic, taking advantage of the skills in urban planning, environment and territory modeling at the Geoinformation doctoral school of Tor Vergata University, and taking advantage of the skills in Spatial Information Systems and Geovisualization at the LIRIS Laboratory of INSA. The motivation that led us to deal with this research topic was the perception of a lack of systematic methods and universally approved empirical experiments in data visualization domain. The experiments should consider different typologies of data, different environmental contexts, different indicators and methods of representations, etc., in order to support expert users in decision making, in the urban and territorial planning and in the implementation of environmental policies. In modern societies, we have to deal with a great amount of data every day and Geovisualization permits the management, exploration and display of big and heterogeneous data in an interactive way that facilitates decision making processes. Geovisualization gives…

▼ Traditionally, education in Saudi Arabia has tended to lay considerable emphasis on the correct recall of memorised information. In the early years of the 21st century, education policy in Saudi Arabia began to consider the introduction of the concept of critical thinking into the curriculum. At the same time, the role and place of the sciences in the curriculum have increasingly been emphasized, the aim being to equip future generations with the skills thought important in taking the country forward. This study is, therefore, set in Saudi Arabia and focuses on the nature and development of critical thinking in the context of the current curriculum in the sciences. After describing the educational scene in Saudi Arabia, the thesis focuses on what is known about thinking in general and critical thinking in particular. The aim here is to move towards the development of a model of critical thinking and some kind of operational description against which test material can be developed. At that stage, it was recognised that, while critical thinking might be conceptualized as a set of cognitive skills, there is a strong attitudinal element. In simple terms, the learner needs to know how to think critically but also be willing to use these skills. There is a very brief review of some key research in the area of attitudes, including the principles of measurement which underpin the way the perceptions and attitudes of the learners are considered in this study. The cognitive nature of critical thinking is then related to two key research contributions of the 20th century: the work of Jean Piaget and David Ausubel. Critical thinking takes place in the working memory and the insights from information processing are discussed, looking at the ways information moves around the brain and the implications for the development of critical thinking are discussed. This study aims to explore how to measure critical thinking and to determine whether critical thinking skills can be developed in science subjects in school pupils. To achieve this aim, a model of critical thinking was first developed representing that thinking critically basically involves asking the questions how, what and why of new sources of information, the information itself and the linking processes involved in understanding. A test of critical thinking was developed based on this model. The data from this test were related to several other educational measures: student perceptions, working memory capacity, understanding science, school marks in science. Interviews with teachers and school inspectors were also conducted to explore their perceptions. The researcher is confident that the model and test make a contribution to the literature, as well as being of benefit to Saudi Arabia and to other countries. Critical thinking was measured with a total of 240 pupils, 120 girls and 120 boys, aged between 13 and 15, in classes 1, 2 and 3, in six Intermediate Schools in Saudi Arabia in the academic year 2009-2010. The questions in the test were designed so that success in the…

▼ Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations are frequently used in the aerospace industry to help reduce development times by cutting down on the need of extensive windtunnel campaigns. However, although design-point aerodynamics are well predicted, edge of the envelope scenarios dominated by non-linear fluid phenomena can lead to uncertainties in the accuracy of the results produced. This work addresses the use of Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) based simulations in the prediction of unsteady shock-buffet phenomenon. Three studies are conducted: a 2D validation study, a 3D validation study, and the pinnacle of this work which presents a novel shock-buffet prediction on an industrially-relevant aircraft confguration. Two dimensional shock-buffet predictions are presented as a confrmation of previous available knowledge. The dependency on turbulence modelling approaches is evident, with new results showing that the full Reynolds Stress Model (RSM) is a more appropriate closure to the RANS equations than other typically used eddy-viscosity-based models. However, this implies additional computational costs (due to increased number of equations solved), and inherited challenges associated with solver stability. RANS-based simulations are then applied to a 3D confguration: the NASA Common Research Model (CRM) wing-body test case. Complementary results to the AIAA CFD Drag Prediction Workshop are produced. Novel results, outside the Drag Prediction Workshop envelope, investigate the development and expansion of the shock-induced boundary layer separation on the NASA CRM wing, however the steady RANS approach fails to accurately predict this due to unsteady effects which are not accounted for. Unsteady simulations in the shock-buffet regime of the wing-body NASA CRM are then presented as the main novel contribution of this work. The complexity of the phenomenon is revealed by unsteady shock oscillations coupled with shock-induced separation and vortex shedding. The presence of shock-buffet cells is detected and helps understand shock dynamics. A frequency analysis reveals the presence of multiple peak frequencies. A qualitative comparison with experimental observation show similarity in the physics produced. Finally, to further investigate the shock-buffet phenomenon, the effects of changing the Reynolds number are presented. Through industrial relevance, the current work can lead to decision making in the development of the future generation of aircraft.

▼ Energy harvesters can be used to provide small amounts of power in remote locations. Applications include powering wireless sensor networks and powering microelectromechanical systems. A wealth of different designs exists for harvesting energy from different sources, including designs which harvest from multiple sources simultaneously. However, there are no universally accepted metrics for assessing the performance of energy harvesters; this can make it impossible to compare designs in any meaningful way. The first part of this thesis develops a domain-neutral framework for describing and analysing the behaviour of energy harvesters. This involves introducing a system of dimensionally consistent analogies into energy harvesting. Using this domain-neutral and dimensionally consistent framework, it is possible to come up with general expressions for the behaviour of single-source energy harvesting systems. This approach is then validated experimentally for single-source energy harvesters. The second part of this thesis involves extending the theoretical analysis to multi-source energy harvesters. Using the system of analogies defined in the first part of the thesis it is possible to create an n-degree-of-freedom matrix representation of a multi-source energy harvester. This enables us to derive expressions which are valid for both single-source and multi-source energy harvesters. The expressions for the maximum power absorbed by an energy harvesting device are shown to be independent of the number of sources, as well as any static coupling or coupling through material effects (e.g. piezoelectric). Numerical simulations are used to explore the validity of these expressions for various system configurations driven with a mixed stochastic-deterministic input signal. From the results of these numerical simulations, a practical approach for estimating the efficiency of an energy harvester using the maximum power absorbed as a theoretical limit is described. The third part of this thesis describes experiments which validate the theoretical analysis. These experiments are used to provide an example of how to calculate and compare the efficiency of energy harvesting designs.

▼ Against the backdrop of increasing global efforts to mitigate the effects of climate change there has been a large focus on the Built Environment. The low level of building stock turnover in the UK, estimated between 1 3% per annum, has reinforced the importance of robust retrofit programmes to meet legislated targets [1,2]; Experts predict that the majority of existing UK buildings will still be in use in 2050 [3]. Residential and commercial buildings account for approximately 20% of energy end use globally with UK industry building services such as space heating and lighting account for between 6-56% of overall building energy use, depending on sector [4]. Building Energy Modelling and Simulation (BEMS) software is used to assess the energy performance of a building based on knowledge of its construction, design, use and location. While design data is readily available for new buildings, existing buildings, that are in need of retrofit, tend to have limited as-built building data. This requires a collection of data through site surveys and manual creation of building models; This is a time consuming and expensive activity. The aim of this research was "Develop a scientific method to remove barriers to urban scale Building Energy Modelling and Simulation (BEMS) using pattern recognition software to extract built forms from large data sets". This research has developed a process of rapid geometry generation for BEMS applications to substantially improve this workflow. Following an internal site survey, a Point Cloud was produced of a case-study building. This was automatically processed to create recognisable building geometry for BEMS applications that achieved time savings of 85% over traditional methods. It was identified that internal survey methods present limitations to the automated reconstruction process and that existing offerings for UAV mounted survey equipment required high capital expenditure. A low-cost prototype for external scanning underwent initial development and identified areas for further development. The geometry that was reconstructed via internal survey data was simulated in BEMS and compared against measured energy data. The annual energy use was predicted to within 6% of the measured energy data. Limitations to a full reconstruction led to a hybrid approach being conducted. The hybrid approach predicted annual energy use to within 4% of measured data and met industrial validation requirements. The research conducted has demonstrated that improvements to the BEMS workflow can be achieved and in doing so it can contribute to the reduction in emissions from the Built Environment.

▼ Increasing awareness of the impact that fossil fuel power generation has taken on the environment has driven intensive exploration of low carbon alternatives, such as wind energy. Whilst wind power generation has become a growing resource for meeting the demands of ever- increasing global energy consumption, wind technology has demonstrated reliability issues, mainly due to the stochastic nature of wind conditions. Consequently, downtime associated with unexpected component failure is negatively affecting profit for wind turbine operators. A major contributor towards wind turbine downtime is the premature failure of gearbox bearings, and whilst typically many factors can contribute towards accelerated damage, overloading is believed to be a key driver. Overload events occur due to inertial effects within the drive train, with plastic deformation in the static bearing raceway suggested to be a significant influence on damage propagation, however the mechanism by which this occurs is relatively unknown. Non-destructive testing approaches, for example synchrotron X-ray and neutron diffraction techniques, have demonstrated the potential for characterising damage in engineering components, and with further development offer the potential for investigating the failure initiation mechanism present in the aforementioned wind turbine bearing and other similar components. This project therefore focuses on the development of such techniques, specifically looking at the advancement of stroboscopic diffraction and neutron imaging methods, taking the wind turbine gearbox bearing as an exemplar component for this study. A novel stroboscopic technique has been incorporated into a custom-built bearing rig, permitting the measurement of time-resolved subsurface strains in dynamic bearings. Prior to testing, bearing samples were exposed to significant overloading, with the aim of reducing experimental times to those appropriate for neutron and X-ray investigations, whilst also creating a specific location to be examined that is more prone to damage. The stroboscopic technique was used to successfully measure dynamic subsurface strain when contact stresses were at a maximum magnitude, whereby the rolling element was in contact with the overloaded region. Additionally, the benefit of using eventmode data acquisition during the neutron diffraction experiment, demonstrated the capability of stroboscopic neutron diffraction for analysing cyclic strains associated with rolling contact fatigue. Neutron imaging methods for damage characterisation are also being explored, with neutron Bragg edge transmission imaging becoming an increasingly popular technique for measuring throughaveraged elastic strains. To aid development of this technique for the purpose of evaluating damage, an in situ fatigue experiment was performed, whereby crack nucleation and propagation in a notched sample was successfully detected. Neutron computed tomography was also applied postfatigue, successfully permitting visualisation of the crack. Having managed to evaluate…

▼ Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) are the second largest cause of disability worldwide and cost the UK National Health Service (NHS) over £4.7 billion yearly. One holistic approach to alleviate this burden is to create in silico models that provide insight into MSDs which will improve diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. This thesis presents a modelling framework that analyses the mechanical behaviour of anatomical skeletal muscles. The anatomical geometry and fibre paths of the medial gastrocnemius muscle were acquired from the Living Human Data Library (LHDL). The medial gastrocnemius model was further sophisticated by incorporating morphological representations of the aponeurosis and myotendon transition region. Having carried out a finite element analysis on the medial gastrocnemius, it was found that the morphology and size of the transition region significantly affected the mechanical response of the muscle. Three illustrative simulations were subsequently carried out on the model, to better understand the muscle's mechanical response in differing mechanical environments: (1) the effects of high extensions on the muscle's mechanical response, (2) lengthening of the aponeurosis - a phenomenon often observed following aponeurosis regression - and (3) the stress-strain regime of the muscle when the tendon experiences a laceration and heals over 21 days. These models show the regions that experienced the highest strains were the muscle-tendon transition regions. As MSDs tend to be of a degenerative nature and progress over time, the temporal changes of the mechanical response of skeletal muscle tissue is of great interest. In the penultimate chapter, the medial gastrocnemius was assessed across various remodelling regimes. It was found that the muscle returned to homeostasis only when both the muscle and tendon remodelled - albeit, at different remodelling rates. Whilst this observation seems intuitive, most other growth and remodelling models of skeletal muscles have only remodelled either the muscle or tendon constituent. The model developed in this thesis therefore has the potential to inform multi-scale musculo-skeletal muscle models thus providing a significant contribution to understanding MSDs.

▼ Evaporation, flame formation and liquid-phase dynamics of isolated fuel droplet shares similar characteristics with the droplets within fuel spray. Hence, isolated droplet studies which involves simple mass and energy transport are relevance to the complex spray environment in combustion. Motivations in the present work evolves around the evaluation of disruptive, transient liquid and gas phase of evaporating liquid fuel between analytical and experimental method. These disruptive and transient effects were analysed by several droplet conditions and arrangements including the experimentation on neat fuel with large difference in volatility and sooting propensities, stable and unstable emulsion droplets, soot contaminated diesel and multi-droplet combustion. Fuel droplets experimented in present work were suspended on 100 μm silicon carbide fibre and ignited in normal gravity, atmospheric pressure and ambient air. Backlighting was utilised to image the droplet and the flame was imaged directly by high speed cameras. The discrepancies between experimental and analytical works were divided into two conditions. Prolonged droplet heating affected the prediction accuracy of burning rate whilst prolonged fuel vapour accumulation affected the prediction accuracy of flame stand-off ratio. Higher amount liquid mass was ejected from water emulsion compared to ethanol emulsion droplet resulting 100% higher burning rate in each additive loading. It was found that microexplosion only occurs once all three conditions are present; the droplet temperature reaches the superheat limit of its lower boiling point component, a complete phase separation of emulsion components and the location of dispersed phase near the centre of the droplet. Compared to the unchanged reduction in burning rate of surface-contaminated droplet, the burning rate of volume-contaminated droplet was further reduced when the particle loading was higher. The difference was determined to be factored by the agglomeration rate of particles. Surface-contaminated droplet had a complete particle agglomeration upon ignition whilst volume-contaminated droplet had gradual agglomeration of particles, with faster particle agglomeration in higher loadings. In both contamination conditions, the droplet heating effect was longer due to high particle absorbance and the accumulated fuel vapour is found to be reduced due to the supressed evaporation rate. During the combustion of closely packed fuel droplets, the critical distance is found to be longer for lower volatility fuel factored by its tendency to have fuel vapour accumulation effect which enlarges the flame size when there is a starvation of oxygen. Transient droplet heating during multi-droplet combustion was found to be affected by the availability of oxidiser and heat transfer from the flame of nearby droplets. On the other hand, the combustion stability depended on the inter-droplet distance between neighbouring droplet. Overall, it is found that during transient droplet heating, longer duration taken for a fuel…
