The first section, some water problems are described, as well as the different water treatments, quality parameters and regulations. The second section, a description of advance membrane treatments is included and reverse osmosis is studied to eliminate micropollutants from the water. The third section, the most common families of organic micropollutants studied in environmental waters are described. Some of these families are currently regulated. In addition, the analytical methodologies for these compounds determination are also described. Finally, the characterization of the organic fouling in reverse osmosis membranes and how it could interfere in the water treatment process by the advance treatments is described. This work presents advancements of AGNES technique (Absence of Gradients and Nernstian Equilibrium Stripping) for the determination of Cd, Pb and, mainly Zn, in synthetic and natural systems. The achievements include: i) strategies to tackle the analysis of high metal concentrations inside the amalgam, to avoid the interference from the intermetallic compounds CuxZn in the Zn2+ determination, to determine the complexing capacity of a complex matrix, such as wine for Zn2+, and to sound the preconcentration factor attained after a certain deposition time under diffusion limited conditions; ii) validation of AGNES with Donnan Membrane Technique (DMT), and iii) its implementation to soils extracts.
