Fourth Generation Networks (4G) introduce the capability of ubiquitous access to services in heterogeneous networks. In these environments, the distribution of the management would require semantics for common sharing vocabulary, an ability which is not yet provided. For that reason, service providers from different management domains are facing the challenge of exchanging managerial information between them during handovers. This is mainly due to the lack of new business models with access control, peering agreements, billing, security and privacy management, QoS standardization which strongly limit the collaboration between providers in the moment of receiving a new user. This work describes a set of ontologies to be used by new access models supported by ontologies for 4G. The ontologies are mapping out the common vocabulary of entities. The approach used to validate the set of ontologies was the development of two service prototypes for 4G, the prototypes specialized a subset of Haggle, Y-Comm, SOHand and DOHand ontologies. The main contribution is to provide the information structuring necessary for easy exchanging of managerial information between service providers, users and brokers. Another contribution of this work is to demostrate how ontologies facilitate the creation of new services in integrated environments

▼ There is constant demand for the development of mobile networks to meet the service requirements of users, and their development is a significant topic of research. The current fourth generation (4G) of mobile networks are expected to provide high speed connections anywhere at any time. Various existing 4G architectures such as LTE and WiMax support only wireless technologies, while an alternative architecture, Y-Comm, has been proposed to combine both existing wired and wireless networks. Y-Comm seeks to meet the main service requirements of 4G by converging the existing networks, so that the user can get better service anywhere and at any time. One of the major characteristics of Y-Comm is heterogeneity, which means that networks with different topologies work together to provide seamless communication to the end user. However, this heterogeneity leads to technical issues which may compromise quality of service, vertical handover and security. Due to the convergence characteristic of Y-Comm, security is considered more significant than in the existing LTE and WiMax networks. These security concerns have motivated this research study to propose a novel security management system. The research aims to meet the security requirements of 4G mobile networks, e.g. preventing end user devices from being used as attack tools. This requirement has not been met clearly in previous studies of Y-Comm, but this study proposes a security management system which does this. This research follows the ITU-T recommendation M.3400 dealing with security violations within Y-Comm networks. It proposes a policy-based security management system to deal with events that trigger actions in the system and uses Ponder2 to implement it. The proposed system, located in the top layer of the Y-Comm architecture, interacts with components of Y-Comm to enforce the appropriate policies. Its four main components are the Intelligent Agent, the Security Engine, the Security Policies Database and the Security Administrator. These are represented in this research as managed objects to meet design considerations such as extensibility and modifiability. This research demonstrates that the proposed system meets the security requirements of the Y-Comm environment. Its deployment is possible with managed objects built with Ponder2 for all of the components of Y-Comm, which means that the security management system is able to prevent end user devices from being used as attack tools. It can also achieve other security goals of Y-Comm networks.

▼ This thesis presents an investigation of the impact of indoor small-cells. It is expected that small-cells will be able to increase the throughput and capacity for the existing networks. A deployment algorithm is presented with focus on offloading traffic from the macro layer. The performance of the deployments created with the proposed algorithm, is compared with a reference deployment. The different deployments are then simulated in a real network simulator, which performs static simulations in 3 dimension using the theory of multiple knife-edge diffraction. The small-cells increased the throughput and capacity remarkably and additional gains were obtained with the proposed algorithm. The thesis also includes strategies for small-cell deployment.

▼ Mestrado em Engenharia de Telecomunicações e Informática
Recent advances in mobile communication technology have allowed for considerable
growth both in traffic and user numbers. However, in order to maintain acceptable quality of
experience and service levels with increasing network capacity requirements, a mobile
communications operator is challenged with high investment costs and high operating costs.
Cost effectiveness and environmental sustainability are two major factors a mobile
telecommunications operator must take into account in order to maintain its network planning
techniques ready for the accelerated growth of traffic in future mobile networks. With the
incoming LTE-Advanced system and with the increasing popularity of femtocells, it becomes
necessary to evaluate and quantify the economic viability and sustainability of this new type
of base station when used as a standalone deployment option, as well as when used in a two-tier network.
Therefore, different cases were used with a deployment method based on capacity
used with a varying non-uniform traffic distribution in order to assess the future resistance
and flexibility of this proposed solution. A comparison was made between macro cell
coverage only, full femtocell coverage and a two-tier joint solution.
Our study has concluded that for low capacity demands, the best approach is a two-tier network with femtocells used for indoor backhaul. A joint solution also allows for the
cost-effective resolution of indoor coverage issues. According to our future capacity
requirements projected, it has been concluded that a full femtocell deployment, by far, the
most economically viable option.
A method for the quantification and suppression of carbon emissions due to energy
consumption is also proposed, through which we studied and estimated the price for the
achievement of a zero carbon emissions network.
móveis do futuro. Com a chegada próxima do LTE-Advanced e com a crescente popularidade

▼ Recent evolution of communication networks comprises
of different segments and technologies, where each segment maybe
implemented using different QoS. Further, the proposed all-IP core
infrastructure of the future networks will offer varying QoS level
multimedia services to the users. However, IP being a best effort
service, seamless provision of end-to-end QoS guarantees is
extremely important. In today's world, devices with multiple
networking capabilities is quite common. The traditional approach
in networking includes grouping identical traffic and allocating
them to the network that has the maximum available data rate. This
creates unbalanced traffic load in the network, leading to poor
utilization of the associated resources. This problem can be
greatly alleviated if the traffic can be allocated intelligently to
the networks. For fair traffic distribution, we modeled the AP of
each network as a single queuing server. Then, suitable equations
and algorithms are designed to divide the incoming traffic flow
into multiple subflows and allocated to the APs based on their
available data rates. Network Selection in a
Heterogeneous
Cognitive Radio Wireless Network is a challenging task, since the
users need to select the appropriate channels of the network in
addition to the network itself. The varying levels of interference
experienced by the secondary user (SUs) is due to the presence of
primary user (PU)s in the adjacent channels. Hence, SUs
transmitting highly sensitive data must find a channel that is
interference free. In this dissertation, we develop a novel network
and channel selection scheme that categorizes both the user
applications and the network channels depending on their
sensitivity level for interference and select them using a
bipartite graph matching algorithm. The effectiveness of Cognitive
Radios is based on opportunistic access of the licensed channels by
SUs while protecting the PU transmission. But channel sensing
incurs cost in terms of time overhead and energy consumption.
However, infrequent sensing also results in loss of transmission
opportunity for the SUs. Hence, an interesting and challenging
question arise: when should the SU sense the channel, sleep or
transmit, to minimize the total cost? In this dissertation, we
developed a novel scheme for deriving the optimal inter-sensing
duration in a Cognitive Radio network, on the requirement of
protecting the PUs' communications while minimizing the cost for
the SUs. The scheme has been presented for both non-erroneous and
erroneous channel sensing conditions. Handling the "mobile data
tsunami" in the future and providing indoor coverage is a
significant challenge for the operators. The answer is LTE
femtocells. However, limited spectrum availability in the cellular
networks causes severe interference in the neighboring femtocell
users that are transmitting in the same radio band. In densely
deployed environments, interference problems in co-channel
femtocells causes significant degradation in performance. In this
dissertation, we proposed a…

▼ “Context”, as a research notion, has been invented and roughly exploited in many fields of computer science since 1960s and refers to the general idea that computers can sense, react and adapt their functionalities based on the information they acquire from their environment. In mobile and wireless networking research field, context awareness concepts have been widely adopted as means to provide more intelligent functionalities in terms of context information acquisition, exchange and evaluation, while business logic breakthroughs are being proposed, too. Context-aware resource management is a new research field dealing with ways that traditional resource management algorithms in mobile and wireless networking systems can have more intelligent decision making mechanisms by fully exploiting all context information being available in their geographical environment. Additionally, taking into account the fact that the silos between mobile and fixed networking systems are gradually breaking down, decision making mechanisms have to be realized from an overall system perspective (i.e. for converged mobile and fixed network infrastructures), that is jointly take into consideration mobile and fixed networking systems resources availability for efficient resource management procedures. Finally, during the last years, due to the continuous convergence of computing and networking systems, context awareness concepts appear to be a major research “glue-point” of such kind of heterogeneous environments’ integration. Implications of Cloud Computing (CC) paradigm, which are applicable in mobile and wireless networking area are increasingly gaining ground and Mobile Cloud Computing/Networking (MCC/MCN) is an emerging research area introducing itself as the integration of CC into the existing and upcoming 4G HetNet and beyond setups. In this PhD thesis, novel context-aware resource management schemes and algorithms are proposed for: a) 4G heterogeneous wireless network (HetNet) environments, b) mobile and fixed networking systems’ convergence, and c) hybrid/mobile cloud infrastructures, while their performance is evaluated in comparison with related existing state-of-the-art solutions. In a nutshell, this thesis’ main contribution is that it introduces several architectural and algorithmic innovations for context aware resource management in convergent mobile and fixed networking systems towards realizing novel building blocks of the next generation mobile networking continuum.
