A conventional accumulator stores energy for hydraulic systems by compressing an enclosed mass of air, but this air takes up too much volume at low pressure to be practical in applications such as a hydraulic hybrid passenger vehicle. An open accumulator compresses air from the atmosphere to store energy, eliminating the need to store low-pressure air but creating large temperature swings if the heat transfer during compression and expansion is poor. This thesis investigates thermodynamic and heat transfer aspects of an open accumulator to assist in its design. A thermodynamic model was created to determine the efficiency and required heat transfer for open accumulator designs with a volume 1/5th that of a comparable conventional, or “closed,” accumulator. A heat transfer parameter, Z = hA/V, describes how easy it would be to implement the required heat transfer, with low required values of Z being desirable. A design with only one stage of compression and high wall temperature had a lower required value for Z than the high pressure stages in multi-stage designs. For an open accumulator that provides 20 kW of power in expansion and 840 kJ of energy storage at a pressure of 350 times atmospheric conditions, the volume target was 15.7 ℓ and the required Z values for compression and expansion were approximately 6.2×104 W/m3K. A computational fluid dynamics model using the program FLUENT was created to investigate whether the required Z could be achieved in a more practical, three-stage open accumulator design. The expansion case of the lowest-pressure stage was simulated, with a required Z value from the thermodynamic model of 3.83×104 W/m3K. The iv computational domain was a symmetrical, 3-D, diaphragm-bounded chamber of approximately 0.5 ℓ displaced volume, and a realizable k-ε model was used to model the effects of turbulence. The flow pattern generated during the air intake period dominated the flow during expansion, and peak local heat fluxes occurred where the intake flow patterns drew cold fluid next to the walls. The peak heat transfer for the simulation was 386 W. The mean Z value calculated was 9.79×103 W/m3K, around 1/4th of the required value.

▼ A temática da produção de alimentos destaca-se entre as discussões do desenvolvimento sustentável, principalmente por constituir uma das atividades fundamentais para a existência humana, a qual tem sido responsável por inúmeros impactos socioambientais, tais como a destruição das florestas e da biodiversidade genética, a erosão dos solos e a contaminação dos recursos naturais e dos alimentos, bem como o êxodo rural e a concentração de terras. Nesse contexto, a Agroecologia apresenta-se sob um enfoque teórico e metodológico que, agregando diversas disciplinas científicas, se propõe a estudar a atividade agrária sob uma perspectiva ecológica. Sua unidade de análise, portanto, é o agroecossistema, que, a partir de um enfoque sistêmico proporciona as bases científicas para a implantação de agriculturas mais sustentáveis. Assim, percebe-se que a Agroecologia, ao incorporar múltiplas dimensões, promove discussões relacionadas à do desenvolvimento sustentável. Dada a importância de áreas naturais preservadas para a manutenção da biodiversidade e de serviços ecossistêmicos na discussão tanto da Agroecologia como do desenvolvimento sustentável, o objetivo dessa pesquisa foi analisar as diferentes propriedades agroecológicas na área de influência de unidades de conservação do Litoral Norte do estado do Rio Grande do Sul e que fazem parte do Organismo Participativo de Avaliação da Conformidade – OPAC Litoral Norte, a partir do Modelo 3-D de Sustentabilidade de Mauerhofer (2008). Esse modelo foi escolhido porque, além de englobar as três dimensões, ambiental, social e econômica, elas são apresentadas em outro nível de discussão, em um cone, representando uma hierarquia, onde as paredes do cone representam a capacidade de suporte do ambiente, enquanto a base representa o capital ambiental. Interior a esse cone, há outro, em que as paredes representam a capacidade de suporte social e a base o capital social. Da mesma forma, interior a esse segundo cone, há o cone da capacidade econômica e do capital econômico. Os cones estão assim dispostos devido a uma relação de dependência, pois a dimensão social só existe porque há a dimensão ambiental, e a econômica só existe porque há a dimensão social. Portanto, a partir de uma abordagem qualitativa, por meio de entrevistas em profundidade com auxilio de roteiros semiestruturados, a pesquisa foi realizada em seis propriedades agroecológicas do Litoral Norte do Rio Grande do Sul. Uma proposta de operacionalização do modelo 3-D de sustentabilidade de Mauerhofer (2008) foi elaborada, em que os dados coletados resultaram em modelos de triângulo 3-D de sustentabilidade para cada um dos agrossistemas analisados. Um modelo 3- D de sustentabilidade para cada um dos extremos (propriedade sustentável e insustentável) foi também elaborado. Assim, pode-se constatar que os modelos das propriedades rurais analisadas encontram-se bem mais próximos ao modelo da propriedade sustentável, sendo as questões econômicas as que apresentam relações de menor eficiência. ▼ Kinematics based guidance laws like the proportional navigation (PN) and many other linear optimal guidance laws perform well in near-collision course conditions. These have been studied thoroughly in the literature from all aspects, ranging from optimality to capturability, for planar or two dimensional interceptor-target engagements, and to a lesser extent, for three dimensional engagements. But guidance in widely off-collision course conditions like high initial heading errors has been relatively less studied. This is probably due to the inherently high nonlinearity of the problem, which makes it a far more difficult problem to solve. However, with increasing speed and agility of interceptors and targets, solutions of such problems have acquired an increased urgency, as has been reflected in the recent literature. This thesis proposes a guidance law based on differential evolution (DE), a member of the evolutionary algorithms (EA) family. While EAs have been applied extensively to static optimization problems, they have been considered unsuitable for solving dynamic optimization or optimal control problems, due to their computationally intensive nature, and their consequent inability to produce solutions online in real-time, except for systems with very slow dynamics. This thesis proposes an online-implementable optimal control for interceptor guidance, a problem with inherently fast dynamics. The proposed law is applicable to all initial geometries including those that involve high to very high heading errors. While interception by itself is a challenging task in the presence of high heading errors, an additional requirement of optimality is also imposed. The first part of the thesis considers only the 2-D kinematic model with high heading errors. In the second part, a 3-D realistic dynamic model, which includes a time-varying interceptor speed, thrust, drag and mass, besides gravity in the vertical plane of motion, and upper bound on the lateral acceleration, is considered, in addition to high heading errors. It is shown that the same structure of the law that is proposed for the 2-D kinematic model can also be used for the 3-D realistic model, if the rest of the complexities of moving from 2-D space to 3-D space, and from kinematics to dynamics is duly addressed. The guidance law proposed does not require time-to-go, the estimation of which can be a difficult problem in high heading error scenarios in which the closing velocity can be negative. Easy to compute and simple to implement in practice, the proposed law does not need any of the techniques or methods from classical optimal control theory, which are complicated and suffer from several limitations. The empirical pure PN (PPN) law is augmented with a term that is a polynomial function of the heading error. The values of the coefficients of the polynomial are found by using the DE. ▼ Repetitive closure of the upper-airway characterises obstructive sleep apnea. It disrupts sleep causing excessive daytime drowsiness, and is linked to hypertension and cardiovascular disease.Previous studies simulating the underlying fluid mechanics of two-dimensional channel flow are based upon velocity-driven boundaries with symmetric positioning of the soft-palate. In the first part of the present work the two-dimensional work of Balint (2001) is extended to a pressure-driven model where the stability solutions space mapped for the soft-palate, symmetrically placed within viscous channel flow. As a result of this work the modelling of Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA) it is proposed that modelling should focus on nasal breathing as the first indicator for the presence of OSA. Numerical simulations reveal the appearance of amplification of soft-palate displacement over several breathing cycles with asymmetric positioning of the soft-plate and for nasal breathing (single channel flow). Such events increase airway hydraulic resistance at the start of inhalation, a vulnerably period of the breathing cycle for collapse of the pharynx.In the second part of the present work three-dimensional studies are conducted for duct flow and flow through an anatomically correct reconstructed geometry, supporting the findings of the two-dimensional work of the first part. Moreover, extending understanding of anatomical interactions, through development of a three-dimensional geometry reconstruction based on an airway at the end of inhalation. Here the geometry is reconstructed from quantitative date linked to the breathing cycle, captured via an in vivo method using an adapted endoscope technique. Simulations reveal flow mechanisms that produce low-pressure regions on the side walls of the pharynx and on the soft-palate within the pharyngeal section of minimum area. Soft-palate displacement and lateral pharynx-wall deformations reduce further the pressures in these regions creating forces that would tend to narrow the airway owing to flow curvature. These phenomena suggest a mechanism for airway closure in the lateral direction as observed in an bronchoscope study conducted as part of this thesis.

▼ Today COMS process and 3-D graphics technology are quickly developed, and 3-D graphics processing units (3-D GPU) have already been used in the handheld devices. However, this application requires many complex operations which consume a lot of power. This is a severe challenge for handheld devices with limited battery capacity. Furthermore, the development of battery manufacturing technology is slower than the IC process technology. As a result, the power storage of handheld devices cannot supply for a long time of operation. If we want to effectively use the limited battery capacity, the power-saving mode must be added to the application. In this thesis, we propose a low-power precision assignment for special function instructions in 3-D GPU. Its special function operations include reciprocal, reciprocal square root, logarithm and exponential. Each operation is able to perform one of four different precision modes dynamically in demand. In this way, not only some power consumptions can be saved, but also the quality of graphics is able to be accepted by users. This paper first introduces a multi-precision function interpolator which is compliant with the IEEE-754 single precision floating point standard, and this function interpolator is used for special function operations in 3-D GPU. This multi-precision function interpolator provides four precision modes to trade power consumption with output accuracy of special function operations. Subsequently, affine arithmetic is modified to build the error model of special function. This error model indicates the relationship between the precision mode of each special function operation and the final output. Based on this multi-precision function interpolator and the modified affine arithmetic error model, a fast tabu search (TS) algorithm is developed to assign the precision modes of each special function operation. Besides, the necessary graphics output quality can be provided, according to the requirements of the users. ▼ Interpretation of acoustical images to understand the characteristics of a scene and identify under-water objects has become a problem of high importance in a variety of applications. In the meantime, the computer processing of forward-scan sonar video imagery has enabled significant capabilities in a wide variety of underwater operations within turbid environments. Further developments are inevitable with more accurate representation of the image formation principles of these sonars. Sonar images are formed by transmitting acoustical pulses and measuring the reflected sound power from the scene surfaces. The recorded signal encodes information about the shape and material properties of these surfaces. The inherent ambiguities in the interpretation of the 3-D world based on visual cues in a 2-D forward-scan sonar image arise as a result of both operating as a ranging device and loss of elevation angle information due to the projection geometry. One aspect of this work is modeling the image formed by a new class of high-resolution 2-D forward-scan sonar systems which supports our complementary aim of simulating FL sonar images. The other aspect is reconstructing 3-D objects by either recovering the unknown zenith angles from image brightness of a single sonar view or by applying a carving based technique on multiple sonar views. To elaborate, we first provide a detailed derivation for modeling the image formed by a forward-scan sonar. Our initial model derived for a small surface patch is generalized to handle multiple patches and account for the signal type and pulse-width. We exemplify and simulate our model for a circular target profile and validate it by comparing with the true intensities measured from two isolated cylindrical targets with circular cut sections. Then we demonstrate application of our model for multi-path reflections from bottom surfaces with hemi-cylindrical and hemi-spherical targets laid on the bottom. Next, we propose a method to recover the unknown zenith angles from image brightness and thus reconstruct 3-D objects. Our method applies to a single forward-scan sonar image, assuming that the scene objects have smooth surfaces that vary monotonically in terms of distance from the sonar, and cast visible shadows on a flat background. We present the results of experiments with real data to demonstrate the performance of our 3-D reconstruction technique. Finally, we develop a method for determining the 3-D shape of a target from multiple 2-D forward-scan sonar images at given sonar poses. Our strategy is based on sequentially carving the non-target space projecting onto the so-called dark pixels on various images. We demonstrate how the remaining space, deemed to be occupied by the target, approaches toward the object volume, given enough views. The images acquired through sonar roll motions, rather than circumnavigating the target, are critical for more precise reconstruction. ▼ A conventional accumulator stores energy for hydraulic systems by compressing an enclosed mass of air, but this air takes up too much volume at low pressure to be practical in applications such as a hydraulic hybrid passenger vehicle. An open accumulator compresses air from the atmosphere to store energy, eliminating the need to store low-pressure air but creating large temperature swings if the heat transfer during compression and expansion is poor. This thesis investigates thermodynamic and heat transfer aspects of an open accumulator to assist in its design. A thermodynamic model was created to determine the efficiency and required heat transfer for open accumulator designs with a volume 1/5th that of a comparable conventional, or “closed,” accumulator. A heat transfer parameter, Z = hA/V, describes how easy it would be to implement the required heat transfer, with low required values of Z being desirable. A design with only one stage of compression and high wall temperature had a lower required value for Z than the high pressure stages in multi-stage designs. For an open accumulator that provides 20 kW of power in expansion and 840 kJ of energy storage at a pressure of 350 times atmospheric conditions, the volume target was 15.7 ℓ and the required Z values for compression and expansion were approximately 6.2×104 W/m3K. A computational fluid dynamics model using the program FLUENT was created to investigate whether the required Z could be achieved in a more practical, three-stage open accumulator design. The expansion case of the lowest-pressure stage was simulated, with a required Z value from the thermodynamic model of 3.83×104 W/m3K. The iv computational domain was a symmetrical, 3-D, diaphragm-bounded chamber of approximately 0.5 ℓ displaced volume, and a realizable k-ε model was used to model the effects of turbulence. The flow pattern generated during the air intake period dominated the flow during expansion, and peak local heat fluxes occurred where the intake flow patterns drew cold fluid next to the walls. The peak heat transfer for the simulation was 386 W. The mean Z value calculated was 9.79×103 W/m3K, around 1/4th of the required value.

▼ The Central Atlantic Magmatic Province (CAMP) at the Triassic-Jurassic boundary, is the largest known igneous province in the world. However, the geometry and volume of CAMP intrusives under the Coastal Plain of the southeastern United States are poorly known. Under the Coastal Plain sediments of Georgia and South Carolina, the “J” seismic reflector was predicted to be produced by a CAMP lava flow. Recent studies of seismic and well data have shown that the “J” reflector is an unconformity and only locally a CAMP lava flow. In the Clubhouse Crossroads area of South Carolina, seismic reflection, seismic refraction, and well data are available to constrain the shallow structure under the Coastal Plain sediments but have not succeeded in imaging the underlying pluton. We take advantage of a rich potential field dataset to predict the deeper structure of the CAMP mafic intrusive pluton at Clubhouse Crossroads for the first time. The CAMP plutons have both very high densities as well as high magnetic susceptibilities, which makes them ideal for 3-D inversion techniques. We forward modeled the shallow structure with seismic and well control and then inverted for the shape of the deeper structures assuming realistic densities and magnetic properties. The inversion methods used include Fast-Fourier Transform inversion with GMSYS 3D, gravity Fourier Matlab depth inversion, and Oasis Montaj-Voxi earth modeling inversion. The resulting 3-D models show that the Clubhouse Crossroads mafic intrusive is a diabase/gabbro CAMP age laccolith fed by two deep conduits. The laccolith is up to 2 km thick and extends from 1 to 3 km depth over an area of 1900 km2. The volume of the Clubhouse Crossroads laccolith is 1300 km3 or over eight times larger than the Palisades Sill in the Newark Basin. Previous estimates of the Clubhouse Crossroads volumes based solely on drilling and seismic reflection may greatly underestimate the total volumes of CAMP preserved under the Coastal Plain. CAMP laccoliths and basalts under the Coastal Plain may form self-sealing storage reservoirs for CO2 sequestration by injection wells. Advisors/Committee Members: James Kellogg.

▼ The aim of computational chemistry is to depict and understand the dynamics and interactions of molecular systems. In addition to increased comprehension in the physical and life sciences, this insight yields important applications to therapeutic design and materials science. In computational chemistry, molecules can be modeled in a number of representations depending on the molecular system and phenomena of interest. In this work, both simplified, coarse-grained representations and all-atom representations are used to model the interactions of RNA, cucurbituril host-guest chemistry, and cadmium selenide quantum dot binding to the Src homology 3 domain. For RNA, a coarse-grained model was developed termed RACER (RnA CoarsE-gRained) to accurately predict RNA structure and folding free energy. After optimization to statistical potentials, RACER accurately predicted the structures of 14 RNAs with an average 4.15Å root mean square deviation (RMSD) to the experimental structure. Further, RACER captured the sequence-specific variation in folding free energy for a set of 6 RNA hairpins and 5 RNA duplexes, with a R² correlation of 0.96 to experiment. The binding free energies of a cucurbituril host with 14 guests were computed using a polarizable force field and the free energy techniques of Bennett acceptance ratio and the orthogonal space random walk. The polarizable force field captured binding accurately, yet unexpectedly, the orthogonal space random walk method converged slowly, albeit at still reduced computational expense to the Bennett acceptance ratio. Lastly, the nanotoxicity effects of trioctylphosphine oxide coated cadmium selenide quantum dots are investigated with the model Src homology 3 protein domain in complex with its native proline rich motif ligand. With increasing quantum dot concentration, there is an increasing preference for the quantum dots to bind to the proline rich motif active site, inhibiting Src homology 3 function. Spatial audio aims to recreate or synthesize spatial attributes when reproducing audio over loudspeakers or headphones. Such spatial attributes include, for example, locations of perceived sound sources and an auditory sense of space. This thesis focuses on new methods of spatial audio for loudspeaker listening and on measuring the quality of spatial audio by subjective and objective tests. In this thesis the vector base amplitude panning (VBAP) method, which is an amplitude panning method to position virtual sources in arbitrary 2-D or 3-D loudspeaker setups, is introduced. In amplitude panning the same sound signal is applied to a number of loudspeakers with appropriate non-zero amplitudes. With 2-D setups VBAP is a reformulation of the existing pair-wise panning method. However, differing from earlier solutions it can be generalized for 3-D loudspeaker setups as a triplet-wise panning method. A sound signal is then applied to one, two, or three loudspeakers simultaneously. VBAP has certain advantages compared to earlier virtual source positioning methods in arbitrary layouts. Previous methods either used all loudspeakers to produce virtual sources, which results in some artefacts, or they used loudspeaker triplets with a non-generalizable 2-D user interface. The virtual sources generated with VBAP are investigated. The human directional hearing is simulated with a binaural auditory model adapted from the literature. The interaural time difference (ITD) cue and the interaural level difference (ILD) cue which are the main localization cues are simulated for amplitude-panned virtual sources and for real sources. Psychoacoustic listening tests are conducted to study the subjective quality of virtual sources. Statistically significant phenomena found in listening test data are explained by auditory model simulation results. To obtain a generic view of directional quality in arbitrary loudspeaker setups, directional cues are simulated for virtual sources with loudspeaker pairs and triplets in various setups. The directional qualities of virtual sources generated with VBAP can be stated as follows. Directional coordinates used for this purpose are the angle between a position vector and the median plane (θcc), and the angle between a projection of a position vector to the median plane and frontal direction (Φcc). The perceived θcc direction of a virtual source coincides well with the VBAP panning direction when a loudspeaker set is near the median plane. When the loudspeaker set is moved towards a side of a listener, the perceived θcc direction is biased towards the median plane. The perceived Φcc direction of an amplitude-panned virtual source is individual and cannot be predicted with any panning law.

Le sujet concerne l’influence des effets tridimensionnelles sur les champs de déformation et de contrainte au voisinage d’une éprouvette chargée en mode I. La loi de comportement caractéristique des polymères amorphes avec un seuil d’écoulement viscoplastique suivi d’un adoucissement et d’un durcissement à mesure que la déformation augmente est prise en compte. La loi est implantée dans une UMAT abaqus. Les champs au voisinage de l’entaille sont analysés et les résultats 3D comparés à ceux correspondant à un calcul 2D sous l’hypothèse de déformation plane. L’influence de l’épaisseur de l’échantillon est étudiée et nous montrons qu’au-delà d’un rapport épaisseur t sur rayon d’entaille rt, t/rt>20, les champs de déformation plastique sont qualitativement similaires entre les calculs 3D et 2D. En revanche, nous montrons que la répartition des contraintes et notamment celle de la contrainte moyenne est sur-estimée avec un calcul 2D en comparaison à une simulation 3D. Nous prenons en compte par la suite la rupture par craquelage, modélisée avec un modèle cohésif. Une étude paramétrique est menée afin de définir une procédure d’identification des paramètres caractéristiques du modèle cohésif. Par ailleurs les simulations montrent qu’au-delà d’un rapport t/rt supérieur à 20, une ténacité minimum peut être estimée : ceci constitue un résultat important pour la détermination expérimentale de la ténacité des polymères ductiles.

We investigate 3D effect of crack tip palsticity and the influence of the thickness on 3D glassy polymer fracture. The characteristuc constitutive law with a viscoplastic yield stress followed by softening and progressive hardening is accoutne for and implemented in a UMAt routine, in abaqus. The crack tip fields are investigated and 2D plasne strain versus 3D calculations compared. Qualitatively, the palstic distribution are comparableas soon as the ratio thickness over crack tip radius is larger than 20. However, the 2D calculations over estimate the stress distribution compared to the 3D cases. We have accounted for failure by crazing that is described with a cohesive models. A parametric study sheds light on the methodology to use for the calibration of the cohesive parameters. The simulations show that for a ratio thickness over craci tip radius larger than 20, a minimum tuoghness can be observed. This results has implication on the definition of a thickness larger enough experimentally.

▼ The use of a biomechanically correct finite element model (FEM) for simulating the behaviour of the human mandible during functional movements can be improved by including patient-specific anatomical data and real bone density data derived from a tomographic scan. A model produced through this approach could be more realistic than the ones reported in literature over the last decades which lack subject-specificity in terms of morphological features and local material properties. Most of the published models over-constrain the mandible and do not include the action of facial muscles leading to what this study proves being simplistic or even erroneous interpretations of crucial implant osseointegration processes. By interpreting tomographic data in this research work the author developed advanced FEMs of the human mandible applied to realistic clinical scenarios and which can therefore be used to guide treatment plans. Finite element simulations were also created to validate the design and the mechanical stability of a dimensionally reduced implant-supported patient reference tool used with an innovative and minimally invasive image-guided surgery system. The author developed such novel navigation system for oral implantology to allow surgical approaches which otherwise could be not pursued using traditional techniques. This task required the design and prototype of software and hardware components which are now being clinically tested. This thesis shows the application of the navigation system to the insertion of long angled implants for posterior support of full-arch prostheses. From the results of the FEM and by taking into account the micro-motions of the inserts generated by the full set of muscular forces acting on a mandible in mechanical equilibrium under functional loading, this configuration showed superior osseointegration potential as opposed to what is reported in literature. The author also applied the FEM to evaluate the osseointegration potential of implants with deep cortical anchorage, as opposed to shorter mono-cortical implants. Moreover, a novel procedure for their safe insertion was designed by combining the benefits of ultrasonic bone socketing (piezoelectric osteotomy) with the dynamic guidance offered by the developed navigation system. In force of its clinical potential, the surgical approach proposed in this study is currently being validated through in vivo trials approved by the independent ethical committee of University of Bologna. Preliminary results from Clinical Trials, as presented in this work, reported an average accuracy for implant insertion of 0.90+/-0.07 mm. It is reasonable to state that the ultimate conclusion of this investigation is that the developed image-guided surgery system can be used safely and for significant outcomes on a routine basis for orthodontic or maxillofacial surgical procedures. L’instabilité des cavités souterraines (mines, carrières, tunnels,…) peut induire les mouvements de terrains d’amplitude suffisante pour endommager les bâtiments et les infrastructures en surface. Les méthodes traditionnelles, utilisées dans les pratiques d’ingénieur pour prévoir les déformations dans les structures, sont basées sur les caractéristiques des mouvements de terrain en condition de terrain vierge sans prendre en compte l’effet de la présence des structures en surface. L’objectif de cette thèse est de prédire les déformations des ouvrages en tenant compte de l’influence de l’interaction sol-structure, d’une part ; et d’évaluer la performance d’une solution de protection (tranchée périphérique), d’autre part. Cela a été achevé par la réalisation d’études paramétriques utilisant deux approches complémentaires : une approche expérimentale à l’aide d’un modèle réduit physique 3D sous gravité normale et une modélisation numérique 3D par la méthode des éléments finis. En particulier l’effet d’un certain nombre de paramètres géométriques et mécaniques a pu être investigué dans l’étude de l’interaction sol-structure : la position de la structure par rapport à la cuvette d’affaissement, le poids de la structure et la raideur relative entre le sol et la structure. Concernant l’étude de l’efficacité de tranchées périphériques, l’effet de la position de la structure, de la position de la tranchée vis-à-vis de la structure et de la rigidité de la tranchée a été analysé. Les résultats obtenus ont abouti à une meilleure compréhension du problème d’interaction sol-structure et ont montré l’importance de cet effet qui doit être pris en compte dans l’évaluation de la vulnérabilité du bâti. Le transfert des mouvements du sol à la structure est faible (moins de 2,5%), dans le cas modélisé : structure rigide et interface glissante. Les différents résultats ont permis par ailleurs de mettre en évidence l’efficacité de la tranchée périphérique pour réduire les sollicitations affectant les structures. La tranchée doit être remplie avec un matériau très déformable et surtout placée à une distance de l’ordre d’un mètre de la structure.

The instability of underground cavities due to mining or tunneling activities can induce surface ground movements which damage overlying buildings and infrastructures. The conventional design methods, used in engineering practices to assess the structure’s deformations, are based on greendfield ground movements without taking into account the effect of the surface structure. The objective of this thesis is to predict the building deformations by taking the in-fluence of the soil-structure interaction into consideration, and to evaluate the performance of a mitigation technique (peripheral trench). Dans les années à venir, l’industrie de l’aéronautique doit améliorer le contrôle thermique des composants et modules hautement intégrés. Les approches de refroidissement standard, utilisant l’air forcé ne sont plus utilisables. Il est donc nécessaire de développer de nouvelles technologies capables d’offrir des solutions compatibles avec ces nouvelles problématiques. Une revue bibliographique approfondie est présentée pour montrer les solutions existantes pour l’avionique. Les systèmes à changement de phase, tels que les boucles diphasiques capillaires (LHPs), sont très attractifs puisqu’ils peuvent être utilisés pour transporter la chaleur vers une grande surface d’un radiateur qui dissipera la chaleur vers le milieu ambiant. Une première famille de LHP, conçue et réalisée par la compagnie Atherm, et remplie avec du méthanol, est décrite. Deux autres familles de LHP sont également présentées. La première a été réalisée par la société ATHERM et a un condenseur et des lignes de transports modifiés, afin d’être intégrée sur une carte électronique existante. La deuxième famille, a été conçue et réalisée par l’Institut of Thermal Physics (ITP), sur la base de spécifications similaires. Un banc d’essai expérimental est conçu et réalisé pour tester ces systèmes. Les effets de la charge en fluide, baïonnette, et mèche secondaire, sont observés. Des tests d’orientation et d’accélération sont réalisés sur des LHPs intégrées dans un rack aéronautique. Même une certaine sensibilité aux orientations et accélérations est observée, les LHPs fonctionnement toujours jusqu’à l’accélération maximale testée de 6 G. Un modèle stationnaire d’une boucle diphasique basé sur une approche à plusieurs échelles est développé. Plusieurs niveaux de complexité et de précision peuvent être sélectionnés pour le modèle des composants individuels de la boucle, allant du modèle nodal au modèle 3D. Le modèle est validé avec les données expérimentales. Un bon accord entre les simulations numériques et les résultats expérimentaux est obtenu. Les résultats numériques montrent que la charge de fluide dans le réservoir affecte le comportement thermique de la LHP en modifiant la répartition des flux de chaleurs. Des gradients de température importants sont observés dans la plaque du condenseur, et un nouveau tracé de la ligne condenseur est proposé. Plusieurs modifications de l’évaporateur sont analysées. La diminution la plus importante de la résistance thermique de l’évaporateur est obtenue par une bonne disposition des rainures axiales de la mèche, associée à une semelle optimisée, ou à des rainures radiales.
