▼ The Swedish old-age care will in the near future face an extensive need to recruit enrolled nurses by virtues of the demographical development. The generation born in the 1940s will soon retire, and at the same time the rest of the population is growing older. One thing that becomes more important in how to draw more people to the old-age care, is to understand how the ones who allready work there experience their own worksituation. The purpose of this study was to find out how enrolled nurses from two different generations experienced their own occupational role and make similarities and differences between the two generations experiences visible. The topics of interest in our study are the respondents own thoughts about their education, their worksituation today, what they think of the future and how they believe others regard their work. To fulfill the purpose of our study we used qualitative interviews. We have performed interviews with three enrolled nurses between 50 and 57 years of age and four enrolled nurses between 20 and 25 years of age. The result was then analyzed with the help of Ingleharts theory “The silent revolution” and the concept of generations. The results showed that there were differences between the two generations. We can´t either on the basis of the small selection of respondents in our study draw any general conclusions. But some differences that show is that the older generation in a larger extent identify with their own occupational role. We also experience that the older are more satisfied with their work situation. They see possibilities to develop in their profession, which the younger don´t. The younger make demands on more possibilities and are more restless then the older generation. From the result we can also see that eatch generation is relative homogeneous. When their is differences between the generations their is often similarites within the own generation. One thing that both generations have in common and that shows clear in the interviews are the importens of empathy and good treatment.

Die vorliegende Masterarbeit befasst sich mit dem Leben und Wirken von entsendeten Kräften des „Österreichischen Entwicklungsdienstes“ (ÖED) in Projekten in Papua- Neuguinea während der 1980er Jahre. Im Rahmen einer qualitativen Analyse ihrer Einsatzberichte (sowie anderer organisationsinterner Dokumente) findet eine kritische Reflexion der Hintergründe, Motive und Ziele dieser Einsatzkräfte statt, um den entwicklungspolitischen Beitrag Österreichs in der Dekade zu beleuchten. Es wird deutlich, auf welche Weise Entwicklung bzw. Unterentwicklung definiert wird, mit welchen anderen Konzepten (v.a. Wissen ist Fortschritt) diese in Verbindung gebracht wird und wie die eigene Projektmitarbeit bzw. die allgemeine Tätigkeit und Präsenz vor Ort bewertet wird. Im Rahmen von Entwicklungsprojekten finden soziale Interaktionen zwischen Individuen aus unterschiedlichen kulturellen Kontexten statt, deren Gestaltung ausschlaggebend für die erfolgreiche Formen der EZA sind. Da die Qualität der Zusammenarbeit zwischen den interagierenden Personen den sozialen und ökonomischen Erfolg von Projekten bestimmt, steht die Frage nach der Gestaltung der Beziehungen zwischen Einsatzkräften und der lokalen Bevölkerung im Zentrum der Analyse. Daraus geht hervor, welche Erlebnisse als besonders bedeutend empfunden werden, aber auch vor welchen Problemen und Herausforderungen die Einsatzkräfte stehen und wo und warum es in Beziehungen und Interaktionen zu Konflikten und Meinungsverschiedenheiten kommt. Zwar gestaltet sich EZA als ein Bereich, der von kontinuierlichen Veränderungen der Begriffe, Konzepte und Strategien geprägt ist, sodass mittlerweile ganzheitliche Formen der Entwicklung, sowie partizipative und nachhaltige Ansätze bedeutender geworden sind; nichtsdestotrotz dominieren in der Praxis der Entwicklungszusammenarbeit, sowie in dem darüber geführten Diskurs, stereotypisierte Ansichten und Vorurteile gegenüber den Anderen; zwischen den interagierenden Personen bestehen vielfach Machtasymmetrien, die aus einem den Einsatzkräften zugeschriebenen Status als „EntwicklungsexpertInnen“ aus dem „fortschrittlichen“ und „entwickelten“ Norden resultiert und die Beziehungen, sowie die Zusammenarbeit zwischen den Akteuren auf bedeutende Weise beeinflusst.

The present master thesis deals with the life and work of members of the Austrian Delevopment Aid Service („Österreichischer Entwicklungsdienst“– ÖED) at projects in Papua New Guinea in the 1980s. On the basis of a qualitative analysis of their mission reports (as well as other internal documents) a critical evaluation of those development workers reasons, motives and objectives has been conducted to examine Austria’s developmental impact during that decade. ▼ This doctoral thesis studies a cycle of British film and television fictions produced in the years 2005-2011 and set retrospectively in the 1980s. In its identification and in-depth textual and contextual analysis of what it terms the ‘Eighties Cycle’, it offers a significant contribution to British film and television scholarship. It examines eighties-set productions as members of a sub-genre of British recent-past period dramas begging unique consideration outside of comparisons to British ‘heritage’ dramas, to contemporary social dramas or to actual history. It shows that incentives for depicting the eighties are wide-ranging; consequently, it situates productions within their cultural and industrial contexts, exploring how these dictate which eighties codes are cited and how they are textually used. The Introduction delineates the Eighties Cycle, establishes the project’s academic and historical basis and outlines its approach. Chapter 1 situates the work within the academic fields that inform it, briefly surveying histories and socio-cultural studies before examining and assessing existing scholarship on Eighties Cycle productions alongside critical literature on 1980s, 90s and contemporary British film and television; nostalgia and retro; modern media, history and memory; British and American period screen fiction; and transmedia storytelling. Chapter 2 considers how a selection of productions employing ‘the eighties’ as a visual and audio style invoke and assign meaning to commonly recognised aesthetic codes according to their targeted audiences and/or intended messages. Chapter 3 investigates semi-autobiographical dramas that bear the mark of remembering, from the vantage point of the present, a time of fast expansions and shifts in the global media landscape. Chapter 4 explores how historical fictions locate historical knowledge in the decade’s refraction through modern media and reconstruct, deconstruct or ironise these mediations to meet particular cultural or industrial demands. Chapter 5 identifies two spin-offs that exploit shifts toward transmedia production and distribution by using eighties iconography as the set pieces for an immersive fantasy world, considering how and why their source texts are adapted and what this implies for past representation. Finally, the Conclusion reviews the project’s findings and briefly considers possible factors for the cycle’s deceleration and transformation after 2011. Ultimately, this project sees the Eighties Cycle as a by-product of shifts in Britain toward advanced globalisation and new mediation that have facilitated access to domestic and international mediated recent pasts. These productions operate within a distinct recent-past period screen fiction mode, engaging audiences equipped with comprehensive notions of the eighties as circulated in media. Meaning is produced in how these notions are structured; sometimes they are lauded, sometimes parodied, sometimes criticised or ironised, and sometimes they are simply cited for the sheer pleasure of recall.

Cette thèse examine l’image de mode éditoriale en contexte(s), au sein de la presse magazine américaine entre les années 1960 et les années 1980, à travers une étude de cas sur les publications mainstream Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar et un nouveau magazine, Interview. On postule que la production photographique de ces trois titres représente à la fois le cœur de leur activité et de ces objets matériels, en raison de leur positionnement, de leurs codes et de leurs objectifs. On étudiera comment, dans ce cœur et à travers ses « grandes » séries éditoriales, se dégage un certain rapport à l’image comme plateforme entre une production collaborative et des réceptions, ainsi qu’une fonction de négociation par rapport au contexte historique. A travers l’étude des conditions de production des images, puis à travers leur analyse, et enfin par l’examen de leurs circulations, on démontrera l’existence d’une norme mainstream manifestant un certain conservatisme. Puis nous nous interrogerons sur les négociations éventuelles avec cette norme, sans cesse contestée, changeante en surface mais tenace.Un examen attentif de l’ensemble des tensions et des compromis au fil des moments de flottement que sont les décennies 1960 à 1980 nous permettra d’aboutir, sur la période étudiée, au constat qu’il existe bien un système articulé autour d’un discours hégémonique très difficile à questionner tant il est puissant et, en fin de compte, fermé. Ainsi, de manière transversale à tout notre travail, il émergera que l’ensemble des images de mode éditoriales est varié, mais lissé par un discours des magazines construit sur le long terme. Pourtant, il offre aussi bien des modèles que des contre-modèles, des contre-discours et des contre-points qui tous se déploient dans un cadre strict et souple, fermement orienté et adaptable, même s’il comporte quelques possibilités de subversion, toujours exercées à la marge. On conclura, en définitive, à la puissance de ce système, normé quoique toujours à l’équilibre entre des tensions contradictoires, structuré autour d’un format très fort, se nourrissant et s’exprimant par l’image de mode qui reste son fleuron.

This doctoral thesis examines fashion editorials through a case study of three American magazines in context, from the 1960s to the 1980s: Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar, two mainstream publications, and a new magazine then, Interview. It is postulated that the photographic editorial production of those magazines is central to them – as material objects, and as the core of their activity as well, both aspects enabling and unfolding their positions, their codes and their purposes. Este proyecto de investigación se caracteriza como estudio histórico-etnográfica basado en estudios de casos de la vida cotidiana de nueve mujeres en Valparaíso y Viña del Mar durante la dictadura chilena, analizando el testimonio de los efectos del régimen autoritario en la vida cotidiana de estas mujeres chilenas entre 1980 y 1987. La metodología se radica firmemente en el método etnográfico con entrevistas semi-abiertas y el análisis del discurso de los relatos. En la metáfora de la arpillera (un tapiz anónimo cosido en lona ensamblado a partir de piezas de tela que muestra escenas de la vida cotidiana o protesta la dictadura de Pinochet), trozos y pedazos de experiencia se juntan en el encima de la lona de la historia para dar forma al testimonio de vida la vida cotidiana. Este proyecto se centra en tres aspectos diferentes de la relación entre el Estado autoritario y la vida cotidiana: las técnicas de gobernabilidad (macro), narraciones de silencio y miedo (micro) y trayectorias narrados (espacial), el último inspirado por el ensayo Halbwachs en caminar por la ciudad. Para cerrar, la relevancia del estudio se destaca por el intento de comprender el efecto de un estado autoritario en el sujeto femenino y las respuestas y adaptaciones que las mujeres chilenas adoptaron en la vida privada y pública mediada por la violencia y el miedo bajo dictadura. La dialéctica del acontecimiento y la rutina de la vida cotidiana bajo la dictadura se unen en las memorias narradas, mediada por el presente vivido, lo cual permite una reflexión sobre la cuestión de la alteridad en la sociedad chilena.

The research project is characterized as a historical-ethnographic study based on case studies of the everyday lives of nine women in Valparaíso and Viña del Mar during the Chilean dictatorship, analyzing testimony of the effects of the authoritarian regime on the everyday life of Chilean women between 1980 and 1987. The methodology is firmly rooted in the ethnographic method with semi-open interviews and discourse analysis of the narratives. In the metaphor of the arpillera (an anonymous tapestry sewn on canvas constructed out of pieces of cloth showing scenes of everyday life or protesting the Pinochet dictatorship), scraps and pieces of experience are sewn onto the canvas context of history to shape the testimony of lived everyday life. This project focuses on three different aspects of the relationship between authoritarian state and everyday life: techniques of governmentality (macro), narratives of silence and fear (micro), and narrated trajectories (spatial) inspired by Halbwachs’ essay on walking the city. To close, the study’s relevance is highlighted by the intent to understand the effect of an authoritarian state on the female subject and the responses and adaptations that Chilean women adopted in private and public life shaped by violence and fear. ▼ Jean Michel Basquiat's move from unknown street artist to internationally known gallery star was solidified with a seminal review in Artforum in late 1981. His distinctive style merged cave-like drawings, the scrawl of the "untrained" artist, and astute observations of culture. His packaging of ethnicity, street background, and artistic style matched seamlessly with Ingrid Sischy's Artforum agenda of art, culture, and race eclecticism. Sischy sought to remodel the magazine to reflect the 1980s fascination with product and image. Basquiat embodied both for Artforum, who shaped his image as an 80s style primitive for 20th century Western art imperialists. Since the early 1960s, Artforum has held the influential position of art world kingmaker. The magazine's primary focus was the traditional art world centered in New York until 1980, when Sischy took the helm of editor. She guided Artforum through a decade of blurring boundaries between money, fine art, and popular culture. Sischy's changes reverberated throughout the art publishing industry. She introduced non-traditional art writers to the magazine, implemented cultural commentary with columns on advertising, television, and music, and added artist projects created specifically for Artforum. The lower East Side of New York was a haven for a different style of artist. Alongside the homeless, prostitutes, and pawnshops grew a subculture of graffiti artists, galleries, and music and dance clubs. A young, African American of Haitian and Puerto Rican descent, Basquiat, was a product of this street culture. Although not a traditional graffiti artist, his early work as part of the duo SAMO tagged walls, buildings, and doors with insightful aphorisms. Though he brought a needed boost to the art market, Basquiat was not inoculated from art world prejudice. In this paper I will contrast the presentation of Basquiat with that of black British artists and filmmakers who directly challenged art racist practices. Through the magazine, Third Text, and film cooperatives like Black Audio Film Collective, they discussed race from the perspective of the non-western Other, something that was lacking in the coverage of Basquiat. The 1980s art market composed of artists, art magazines, gallery owners, dealers, museums, auction houses, and corporate and individual art collectors was not immune to the effects of a culture pre-occupied with money and image. Young, brash business executives saw art as simply an investment vehicle. With thousands rather than millions to spend, auction houses and gallery owners nurtured these new collectors through art education, and appropriated business tactics, such as mortgage style loans and bank financing packages. I selected Artforum because of its influence in the 80s and even today in establishing the career of an artist. Art writing contributes significantly to the success of specific artists, and particular artistic styles and movements. La ricerca ricostruisce le vicende della scena italiana tra gli anni '70 e gli anni '80 e, più nello specifico, il fenomeno del teatro di gruppo, di quelle formazioni cioè che hanno sperimentato con più profondità la questione di un'azione comunitaria attraverso lo strumento del teatro. La ricostruzione di questo fenomeno, svolta all'interno di una premessa più generale sull'emersione di una tensione comunitaria in molte delle più importanti esperienze del teatro del Novecento, è stata effettuata attraverso l'analisi della vicenda artistica e sociale di uno dei più interessanti gruppi teatrali piemontesi: il Teatro del Magopovero di Asti, oggi Casa degli Alfieri. Si tratta di una esperienza, sorta negli anni Settanta nell'ambito del teatro di base, che più di altre ha saputo coniugare al proprio interno la tensione comunitaria, sul duplice versante del lavoro di gruppo e dell'azione sociale. La ricostruzione dell'evoluzione di questo gruppo ha permesso di rileggere le vicende della scena italiana e di mettere a fuoco come la tensione etica alla base di questi gruppi sia stata in grado negli anni di evolversi e tradursi in una dimensione estetica, mantenendo sempre alta l'attenzione al radicamento territoriale, culturale e sociale dei propri esisti artistici.

The research goes trough the Italian scene in - between the 70's and the 80's, in particular it focuses on the group's theatre: teams who experimented deeply a community action with a theatre instrument. The study takes as example the “Teatro del Magopovero”, now “Casa degli Alfieri”, one of the most interesting theatre groups of Piedmont, as a significant occurrence of the artistic and social phenomena of the theatre of the last century which aims to the ensemble . This group was founded in the 70's as a community-based theatre: it's an interesting instance of group /team working and social action. The evolution of the team building of this group shows the changes in the Italian history and stresses out how the strong ethic goal of this groups has been able to change in a aesthetic element, keeping high attention to the cultural and social network with the community in their performances.

▼ This thesis adopts a cross-disciplinary approach to explore the development of the conspiracy thriller genre in British cinema during the 1980s. There is considerable academic interest in the Hollywood conspiracy cycle that emerged in America during the 1970s. Films such as The Parallax View (Pakula, 1975) and All the President's Men (Pakula, 1976) are indicative of the genre, and sought to reflect public anxieties about perceived government misdeeds and misconduct within the security services. In Europe during the same period, directors Costa-Gavras and Francesco Rosi were exploring similar themes of state corruption and conspiracy in films such as State of Siege (1972) and Illustrious Corpses (1976). This thesis provides a comprehensive account of how a similar conspiracy cycle emerged in Britain in the following decade. We will examine the ways in which British film-makers used the conspiracy form to reflect public concerns about issues of defence and national security, and questioned the measures adopted by the British government and the intelligence community to combat Soviet subversion during the last decade of the Cold War. Unlike other research exploring espionage in British film and television, this research is concerned exclusively with the development of the conspiracy thriller genre in mainstream cinema. This has been achieved using three case studies: Defence of the Realm (Drury, 1986), The Whistle Blower (Langton, 1987) and The Fourth Protocol (MacKenzie, 1987). For each case study chapter, interviews have been conducted with the film-makers in order to gain insight into the aims and motivations that underpin each film. As well as employing these first-hand accounts of the production contexts, close analysis of film style is provided in order to understand the ways in which the British genre is informed stylistically by its Hollywood and European forebears. This means that for the first time, the British conspiracy cycle can be understood within a wider historical and cinematic context. Detractors of the conspiracy genre argue that it offers audiences a simplistic view of complex political events. We will reflect on this criticism and evaluate the extent to which the British films provide meaningful political comment within the conventions of mainstream cinema.

▼ Between 1974 and 1976 the Italian Constitutional Court allowed the development of private television channels in Italy. The progressive emergence of the financial holding company Fininvest’s television channels and the ensuing stiff competition with the state broadcaster RAI from the mid-1970s to the early 1990s, a period I define as “the long 1980s,” was a decisive moment not only for the television market, but also for Italy’s cultural and economic history. The ruling by Italy’s highest court opened up new and unprecedented opportunities for private enterprises, and within a few years profoundly affected Italians’ relationship to the television medium, film viewership, and cultural consumption. The domain of the competition for film programming became an important element in the battle for the acquisition of audiences between RAI and Fininvest’s channels. In my dissertation, I focus on the interdependent relationships between cinema and television in Italy during the long 1980s, from the emergence of private local networks and their transformation to national networks, and the ensuing vertiginous rise in film programming, to the introduction of pay-per-view. At the center of my work is a particular practice of programming, which amounted to what I refer to as habit-forming flow, since programmers successfully juxtaposed films and other programs, together with announcements, trailers, and commercials in order to inform the viewing and material consumption habits of the audience. I contend it is the programming as a whole, and not just individual programs, that had a crucial role in shaping these habits and creating new narrative structures. In particular, during the long 1980s, the implementation of the television habit-forming flow informed, and, at the same time was influenced by, a period of profound political, social, and economic transformations. More individualist lifestyles were emerging throughout Italy also thanks to an innovative television programming and its objective to spread more personalized forms of viewing and material consumption. The substantial rise in television film programming through the advent of private television, along with the creation of a habit-forming flow, brought about significant cultural changes in the long 1980s that inspired new consumption practices and narrative formats in Italy. ▼ This thesis traces the impact of inflation on the making of macroeconomic policy in Australia between the end of World War II and the mid-1980s. I take issue with accounts of policy change that focus primarily on ideological change on the part of policymakers. Instead, I present policy as strategic activity within a complex, evolving economic system which is not centred on policy, and in which, therefore, policy does not have a monopoly on initiative. I draw on Marxian state theory and Tinbergian theory of economic policy to explore why counter-inflationary policy emerged as an imperative for the capitalist state and how it came to play a dominant role in organising macroeconomic policy in general. I also focus in detail on the development of central banking in Australia, drawing on post-Keynesian structuralist monetary theory. The body of the thesis is divided into two parts, one dealing with ‘the long 1950s’ and the other ‘the long 1970s’. Both are treated as periods of transition, rather than of stable policy regimes. In ‘the long 1950s’ macroeconomic policy was brand new, and the authorities had to build an effective system of macroeconomic management, sometimes against the active opposition of other groups. A contradiction developed between full employment and price stability, and the latter was prioritised because of limits set by the balance-of-payments under the Bretton Woods international monetary system. The long 1970s was a period of crisis and distributional class conflict. The break-up of Bretton Woods and the movement towards flexible exchange rates changed the form of constraint but continued to impose a counter-inflationary imperative. Monetarism provided an organising and legitimating principle for extremely restrictive macroeconomic policy and the abandonment of full employment as a policy goal, even though policymakers were sceptical of its propositions. Finally, I discuss the movement towards deregulation as something which strengthened rather than undermined the central bank’s power to pursue monetary policy.

▼ The process of economic innovation in Vietnam since the late 1980s presented its human resources in the private sector with constant challenges in terms of continuous improvement for operating effectiveness and efficiency. The challenges have been met by substantial investment of resources in business and management training. Returns from this training, however, have not received due attention. The study sets out to examine the reality of acquiring and utilising business and management training in local private businesses in Ho Chi Minh City, the country’s economic centre. In doing so, the study is expected to provide a better understanding of the characteristics of business and management training in Vietnam, and how this human resources development activity assists private businesses in a transitional economy. Based on Kirkpatrick’s evaluation framework, findings of the study revealed not only different approaches to business and management training but also the limited effects of the training on the trainees and private companies. Knowledgemania, or training for the sake of pursuing knowledge, was still very prevalent among the group of ‘Oriental’ companies whilst a more practical approach towards training aimed at meeting explicit business objectives was adopted by companies exposed to Western management practices. The research revealed that among the factors facilitating or hindering learning transfer within the case study companies, the ability to manage the training process and cultural values were the most influential. The research study also introduced two refined frameworks for training evaluation, aimed at small family and larger private businesses respectively. These refined frameworks incorporate not only the spirit of simplicity and practicality of Kirkpatrick’s framework but also relevant contextual factors. These frameworks are, therefore, able to serve as evaluation tools to reveal both training outcomes and spot the opportunities to further improve management of training. The experience and process of developing the frameworks gained in this research may assist future researchers when undertaking training evaluation in other business contexts.

▼ With the end of the Hollywood studio era, big budget blockbuster musicals had to find ways to compete in the economic and cultural marketplace. Historical events such as the rise of television, the Civil Rights movement, the Vietnam War, and the Watergate scandal influenced the way American audiences saw, and continue to see, the world. Film, theatre, and other artistic disciplines helped audiences understand, cope, and criticize societal changes. As audience perceptions changed, the film musical faced a crisis. In an attempt to maximize profits, Hollywood business practices forced an evolutionary branch in the development of the musical. One fork took the genre towards the embodiment of capitalistic and cultural excess as pointed to by Altman, Dyer, and others. These film musicals attempt to present Utopia. Film musicals such as Grease (1978), Beauty and the Beast (1991), and Evita (1996) are large spectacles that utilize the high concept business model, as outlined by Justin Wyatt, to please audience expectations by managing conflict at the expense of presenting the story world as a utopia. The other branch of film musical exemplified in the films of Cabaret (1972) and All That Jazz (1979) criticize the price paid by an individual in pursuit of ideals that lie beyond dominant social values. The dystopic film musical connects with audiences and critics by drawing on the cynicism and skepticism of contemporary historic and cultural events to forward a clearly dystopic view of society. This study utilizes an interdisciplinary approach to analyze the connection between selected film musicals and the American culture for which they were produced. The study shows that from 1970-2002 film musicals promoted and marketed visions of Utopia that were reflective of specific historical moments rather than ahistorical utopia ideals. While a film like Grease shows that Utopia is the ideal high school experience, later films like Moulin Rouge! (2001) and Chicago (2002) depict imagination as a utopia to escape otherwise dystopic social realities. The interdisciplinary critical frames applied in this study allow scholars to examine the fluid nature of the boundaries between film, theatre, and mass entertainment. ▼ Unlike several European countries where modern art museums were built in the 1950s/1960s following World War II as a symbol of democracy, Portugal’s economic conditions (the country was drained by the colonial wars) and Salazar’s rule would only allow for the construction of a modern art museum in the 1980s under the private initiative of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, shortly before Portugal joined the European Economic Community. The Gulbenkian’s Centro de Arte Moderna [CAM – Modern Art Center] opened in 1983, and it was the first modern art museum in Portugal. Thought of as an art center rather than a museum, CAM included a multi-purpose hall; an open-air amphitheater; a temporary exhibition hall and a children’s art center. The activity taking place beyond the exhibitions gallery where the museum was lodged was the responsibility of ACARTE, the Gulbenkian Foundation’s Department of Artistic Creation and Art Education. Several temporalities seem to be at stake. Schematically: CAM was a promise from the 1950/60s that was fulfilled; placed in an architectonic archetype from the 1970s; which opened in the 1980s; hosting the ACARTE Department, whose curatorial approach – mainly focused on performance, dance, theatre and relational events – could be seen as prefiguring the curatorial discursive and performance turn of the 2000s. ACARTE can also be thought of as the culminating point of two decades of research on Education through Art and Artistic Education. Its founder and first director Madalena Perdigão not only founded the Gulbenkian Orchestra, Chorus and Ballet, but was also responsible for the reform of the national conservatory school in 1971 and for a failed reorganization project of the national artistic education in 1978, after the 1974 Revolution. There is thus an intricate history linking the pedagogic experiments prompted by the Gulbenkian Foundation before the 1974 Revolution, the reform of the national conservatory school, Perdigão’s failed efforts towards restructuring the National Art Education, and her return to the Gulbenkian Foundation as ACARTE Director in 1984. Hence, ACARTE’s activities in the 1980s are directly related to the 1960s’ experiments in pedagogy. But not exclusively: the department’s activities can also be looked at as being at the crossroads between a series of curatorial and programming practices. By basing its activity on the need to attend to what “is missing” ACARTE developed a particularly attentive way of moving through aesthetic and political proposals usually allocated to different time spans, thus accounting for the different perceptions its contemporaries had of their time. As such, ACARTE is a superb case study with regard to decentered modernities. Organized as a lens to look into ACARTE through the 1980s, this work is divided into two parts: Text and Digital Timeline ACARTE 1984-1989. Diese Akkulturation repräsentiert eine Mischung aus unterschiedlichen Kulturen, wodurch es nicht als ein authentisches kulturelles Produkt Chinas verkauft werden kann. Die Erforschung der Vermittlung und Akkulturation von HM-Musik durch die Bedeutung für das Individuum kann einen wichtigen Beitrag zum Verständnis von kulturellen und sozialen Phänomenen im modernen China leisten. Die Entstehungszeit der Heavy Metal-Musik in China kann mit 1981 datiert werden. Die erste Kontaktaufnahme der chinesischen HM-Musiker und Rezipienten mit dem westlichen HM erfolgte intergenerational durch Familienmitglieder, die sich über einem kurzen oder langen Zeitraum hinweg im Ausland aufhielten und ihren Angehörigen kopierte Kassetten nach China schickten oder mitbrachten. Die Etablierung der Szene erfolgte nach dem Konzept der rock mythology, dem Inbegriff von Freiheit, Maskulinität und Macht. Mit diesem Begriff wurden Gegenaktionen (counter-actions) der HM-Musiker und Rezipienten assoziiert, welcher ihnen auch neue Gefühls- und Lebenswelten bot. Diese vorliegende Studie, welche sich im Bereich der Kultur- und Sozialanthropologie bewegt, hatte zum Ziel, die Übertragungswege und die Akkulturationsformen von HM mithilfe des narrativ-biografischen Interviews zu rekonstruieren. Dadurch sollte einerseits eine von Ausländern unabhängige Verbreitung der HM-Musik in China vor 1989 aufgezeigt und andererseits durch Selbst- und Fremdpositionierungen der damaligen Akteure das Schaffen einer neuen Kultur rekonstruiert werden. Zu diesem Zweck wurden 19 HM-Musiker und Rezipienten (11 Rezipienten und 8 HM-Musiker) in Beijing und in Österreich interviewt.Die Auswertung erfolgte durch eine qualitative Inhaltsanalyse und lieferte folgende Ergebnisse: Die wichtigste Erkenntnis ist, dass HM intergenerational durch kopierte Musikkassetten übermittelt wurde. Die Aneignung der HM-Musik erfolgte in Form einer Hybridisierung aus westlichen Musikelementen und chinesischen Gesang und Lyrics. Die Bedeutung, die der Musik zugeordnet wird, ist eng mit den soziokulturellen Umständen in den 1980er-Jahren verbunden, welche im Allgemeinen mit Authentizität und Maskulinität beschrieben wird. Die Befragten stellen ihre 177 narrative Identität als subversiv und counter-active dar. Diese können sie mit dem transgressiven Charakter der HM-Musik ausdrücken und sich somit von der dominanten Popkultur als ein autopoietisches System abgrenzen. Die damaligen Akteure nahmen in ihren Lebensgeschichten eine Positionierung im transnationalen Feld der HM-Musik ein, welche durch Glokalität geprägt war. Zusammenfassend konnten in dieser vorliegenden Studie wertvolle Erkenntnisse über die Entstehung der HM-Musik in China gewonnen werden, wodurch ein wichtiger Beitrag zur Erweiterung des Forschungsstandes geleistet wurde. ▼ This comparative dissertation explores the new moral politics of authenticity emerging in the Western world in the post-1960s era. Examining the development of the popular music genre punk since the 1970s, this study helps to explain why Germany after decades of dictatorship became democratic and how rock’n’roll contributed to this transformation. Investigating how youths used music to build alternative communities and identities during the Cold War, this project details the often uncomprehending and repressive responses by East and West German authorities. In the East, the genre became a form of opposition to the dictatorial SED regime, while in the West, punk became a political and aesthetic platform for individual and social revolution along more ‘authentic’ lines—efforts sparking debates about the contentious Nazi past and the future contours of German identity, society and citizenship. Tracking West German youths travelling abroad to London to experience punk first-hand, and then returning home to rearticulate the genre into the local context of the Federal Republic, I follow the spread of popular culture across state boundaries and the consequences of such transmissions. East German authorities at first tried to repress the genre beaming into the GDR via Western radio before reversing course in the late 1980s in a desperate attempt to use popular music to cultivate a distinctive socialist national identity and shore up their waning political legitimacy. But by then it was too late: forced into the Evangelical Churches to escape persecution, punks became the foot-soldiers of the opposition and helped, in the end, to bring down the Berlin Wall. Detailing the consequences of the 1960s on democratic change in the Federal Republic and contributing to new literature stressing the space for alternative identities and practices in the East German dictatorship, fundamentally, this dissertation argues for the importance of punk and popular cultural in contributing to modern German democracy, national identity and pluralist society.
