▼ Poet John Haines is best known for his first book of poetry, Winter News, which was published in 1966. The book contains poems about the Alaskan landscape that surrounded Haines during his many years of living in Richardson, Alaska. The recurring motifs in his poems include hunting, trapping, the Arctic cold, animals, and death. Haines says Winter News "was born of the isolation in which I then lived" (preface OMD) . It is an isolation that Haines portrays well to his audience and one that has earned him critical praise. Many critics have focused on Haines's use of metaphor and imagery throughout his poetry in Winter News and subsequent books, yet one area that has not been addressed in detail is Haines's use of sound devices, a vital poetic element. Scholar Helen Vendler says that poets are aware of all the sounds in their poems, as well as the various rhythms. Vendler notes that "poets 'bind' words together in a line by having them share sounds, whether consonants or vowels. This makes the words sound as if they 'belong' together by natural affinity" (l45). Haines produces sounds and rhythms using a variety of devices such as assonance, consonance, and alliteration. This paper closely examines a variety of his poems in Winter News and subsequent books, and it illustrates his extensive sound device usage. Chapter one introduces Haines and establishes the boundaries of this paper. Chapter two discusses the importance sound has in poetry; the chapter details Goold Brown's classification of letters, which is used as the basis for the sound dissection. Selected poems from Winter News and later books are discussed in detail. Chapter three analyzes the death motif, particularly prevalent in "The Moosehead," "On the Divide," and "Arlington." Haines's sound device usage, in connection with these poems, also is examined in chapter three. The final chapter discusses the conclusions that culminate from the previous chapters. ▼ The last two decades saw a surge of research interest in Martial Arts fiction. What was taken as “pop” has now become “literature” in every sense of the word. Jin Yong in particular has been the center of interest in the recent studies of Martial Arts fiction. A substantial body of these studies has focused on the narrative aspects of his literature, such as characterization, theme and structure. Little attention has been paid to the fact that Jin Yong was not only a novelist but also a founder and publisher of one of the most important newspapers in Hong Kong in a most turbulent phase of modern Chinese history. The purpose of my thesis is not to evaluate the literary merit of Jin Yong’s work but to conduct research into the historical, political and social conditions under which Jin Yong worked during the 1960s and early 1970s and to study how those conditions affected his rewriting of the traditional genre of Martial Arts fiction. My thesis addresses the following questions: What were Jin Yong’s responses to the violence of China’s Cultural Revolution and the “1967 Riots” in Hong Kong? What was the implication of the transformation of Ming Pao Daily and Ming Pao Monthly in the 1960s? What was the relationship between Jin Yong’s Ming Pao editorials and his Martial Arts fiction? This thesis observes that 1962 was the turning point of Jin Yong’s poltical position, evidenced in his allegorical Random Thoughts on History. His satiric intent reached its climax in The Smiling, Proud Wanderer and The Deer and the Cauldron. My study attempts to devise a strategy of reading literary texts as historically conditioned cultural products, to reconstruct the responses of a Hong Kong writer and cultural critic to the turn of events in China, and to reassess Jin Yong’s Martial Arts fiction as political parables of the Cultural Revolution. My thesis also emphasizes the importance of studying Jin Yong’s work in its original serial form as it first appeared in Ming Pao. There are significant differences between the original version of Jin Yong’s work as serial in the newpaper and the revised version in the book form. It is therefore worthwhile to look into the Ming Pao archive as a careful reading of these understudied materials will reveal much that deserves attention, not only as historical documents but also as cultural products in an important phrase of both Chinese and Hong Kong histories.

▼ This thesis examines the literary dream in selected works by Kafka, Kubin, Meyrink, Musil and Schnitzler, with a particular focus on the redefinition of subjectivity through dreamlife. The introductory chapter contextualises these case studies in the broader field of oneirocriticism, emphasising the dream's ancient role as fixtional template and its specific significance in the destabilised environment of German Central Europe during the early twentieth century. Alfred Kubin's Die andere Seite (1909), which uses the 'other side' as metaphor for both oneiric and artistic experience, reveals the inherent dualism of the literary dream and its close relationship with creativity. In Robert Musil's Die Verwirrungen des Zdglings Tdrlefi (1906), the protagonist serves as the model for a new type of self-determining subject who draws on the knowledge of dreams and irrationality. Franz Kafka's texts reveal techniques for integrating the dream into fictional worlds that are already dreamlike through the prevalence of (literalised) metaphor and free association. Gustav Meyrink, in Der Golem (1915), shares Kafka's interest in concretised metaphor, but also explores the dream's associations with occult practices, used as a defence against the threatening claims of science. Finally, Arthur Schnitzler's literary dreams offer a direct confrontation with psychoanalysis and a dismantling of nineteenth-century ideals of gender and bourgeois love. Overall, it is argued that the literary dreams by these authors hold varied responses to fragmentation of the Ich in the face of psychological 'vivisection', theories of relativity, and the collapse of old social orders. The dream, as a nightly 'psychosis', crystallised the pervasive fears of self-loss during this period; however, in its perennial role as micro-narrative, it also provided a site for re-construction of the subject. The incorporation of dreams in fictional lives served as a metonymical guide for the integration of un- and subconscious experience overall.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This thesis will examine how violence towards children and its traumatic consequences are portrayed. Violence often refers to that which is physical and grandiose (i.e. extreme) in nature. It can, however, take on subtle forms which may not necessarily be physical. What is apparent, however, is that children are most affected by violence because of their dependency on the people around them to care for them. How exactly is victimization and violence towards children different to the victimization and violence that adults experience? How is the violence and subsequent trauma that children experience adequaely represented within the four novels? I propose two hypotheses. Firstly, children seem to be part of the “ignored” section of society, often because of their trauma. This in turn makes their victimization far more damaging than would be experienced by an adult. Because of this, they are left to work through the traumatic experiences and understand it for themselves and this within itself is not a full-proof manner to deal with trauma. These aspects are addressed in more detail within the thesis itself. This thesis comprises of 5 chapters. Chapter one is merely an introduction with summaries of the four novels. Chapter two entails a historical background in which the novels are set, which includes Hitler's Third Reich, the Holocaust and the murder of millions as well as the South African Apartheid regime. Chapter three entails a theoretical background pertaining to various forms of abuse. In chapter four, an analysis of the four novels in question is undertaken. Chapter five is merely a conclusion and summary of the findings. The biggest realisation of this thesis by far has been that traumatic events during childhood without therapeutic intervention can have far-reaching consequences even into adulthood. This includes mood disorders like depression, various anxiety disorders including post traumatic stress disorder and even various personality disorders. What is interesting to note, however, is how protagonists in the novel cope with their trauma and how this trauma becomes a major influencing factor in forming their identities. Storytelling is also central to understanding the world from a child's perspective and this storytelling is used to navigate traumatic events so to say.

Geweld verwys dikwels na die fisiese en grandiose (d.w.s. uiterste) impak van geweld. Dit kan egter subtiele vorms aanneem wat nie noodwendig fisies is nie. Dit is blykbaar so dat kinders die ergste geraak word deur geweld as gevolg van hul afhanklikheid van die mense na aan hulle wat hulle moet versorg. Hoe presies is viktimisasie en geweld teenoor kinders anders as die viktimisasie en geweld wat volwassenes ervaar? ▼ Hans Lodeizen is reeds in 1950 oorlede en alhoewel sy bundel Het lnnerlijk behang reeds meer herdrukke beleef het as enige bundel van bekender Vyftigers soos Remco Campert en Hans Andreus, het daar tot dusver sIegs twee krltiese studies en verder korter artikels oor sy digkuns verskyn. Heelwat kritici wys ook op die romantiese trekke in sy digkuns, maar soos bevestig deur De Rover, is daar nog nie aandag gegee aan wat hierdie "romantiek" dan werklik behels nie. As 'n mens die gedigte van Hans Lodeizen en die kritiese werke daaroor lees, word dit gou duidelik dat daar oënskynlik sterk romantiese trekke in sy digkuns aanwesig is, maar dat dit tog nie suiwer romantiek is nle. Soos Rodenko dit uitdruk: "hij is geen romanticus-uit-één-stuk, maar een gebroken romanticus." Deur twee kritici, nl. Stuiveling en Cartens word hy onderskeidelik egter as ekspressionis en surrealis bestempel. Wanneer ons verder in aanmerking neem dat Lodeizen algemeen aanvaar word as die voorloper, of as lid van die Vyftigers wat skerp van die Romantiek verskil, ontstaan die vraag of dit geregverdig is om Lodeizen as 'n "gebroke" of wat-dan-ook-al romantikus te beskou. Die doel van hierdie tesis is dan om na te gean in hoeverre daar weI sprake van romantiese nalewing in sy digkuns is en of dit net nawerking is. In aansluiting by Ziolkowski sal ons van nalewing praat wanneer 'n sekere gegewe, wat ons op grond van die ontleding van die Romantiek in die eerste hoofstuk as "romanties" ervaar, uit die gees van 'n moderne werk spruit. As nawerking beskou ons dan daardie gevalle waar dit duidelik is, dat ons met 'n teksgedeelte oneie aan die gees van die res van die teks te make het, wat nie op die selfde tydsvlak bestaan nie as die teks waarin dit ingebed is. Aangesien nalewing georiënteer is op die ideologiese inhoud van 'n algemene geesteshouding soos dit in die literêre denke tot uitdrukking kom, moet daar eers vasgestel word of daar wel so 'n gedagtekompleks by verskillende Romantiese digters aan te toon is, want slegs enkele, losstaande elemente vorm nog geensins 'n geesteshoudlng of styl nie. Dit is dan die doel van die volgende hoofstuk, terwyl die daaropvolgende hoofstukke sal probeer vasstel of die hoofkenmerke van die tipologiese romantiek wel in die werk van Hans Lodeizen aanwesig is.

▼ The purpose of this thesis is to examine Joseph Conrad's ironic use of racism in Almayer's Folly (1895), Heart of Darkness (1902), and The Nigger of the Narcissus (1898), in which he subverts many of the racist stereotypes about people of color that were commonly held by nineteenth-century Europeans. Conrad primarily uses stable irony, in which "'the speaker or author makes available to the reader an assertion or position which, whether explicit or implied, serves as firm ground for ironically qualifying or subverting the surface meaning" (Abrams 136). I choose to characterize the racism in the aforementioned works by Conrad as stable irony because Conrad ironically subverts the surface meanings or stereotypes of racism. On the surface, in Almayer's Folly, Heart of Darkness, and The Nigger of the Narcissus it may appear as if Conrad is writing from a typical nineteenth century racist European point of view. However, on closer examination, Conrad uses racism in a much more complex and sophisticated manner, one which subverts racist European assumptions about people of color through irony. This thesis will have an 'Introduction' followed by three chapters, and a 'Conclusion.' The 'Introduction' of this thesis will discuss Jean Jacques Rousseau's ideas on the morality of the savage and the civilized, which are outlined in Rousseau's "Discourse on the Moral Effects of the Arts and Sciences" and "Discourse on Inequality." Conrad's portrayal of the morality of the savage and the civilized in Almayer's Folly and Heart of Darkness, chapters one and two respectively of this thesis, echoes Rousseau's ideas. Chapter one will focus on Conrad's first novel, Almayer's Folly. The Europeans, such as Almayer, who is the main protagonist of Almayer's Folly, view and refer to the native Malays, such as Dain Maroola, as 'savages.' Almayer, the only European in Sambir, an inland trading post in Borneo, views Dain and the other Malays as 'savages' who are inferior to him. However, ironically, Dain Maroola is portrayed as morally superior to Almayer. Conrad is saying that Europeans such as Almayer are blinded by their racism. They only see the Malays as savages, when in actuality, the Malays, such as Dain, are morally superior to the Europeans, such as Almayer. Conrad's portrayal of Dain reflects and reinforces the Rousseauian idea of the noble savage. In addition, it is ironic that the racism that Almayer fervently adheres to in his life, actually destroys him. Chapter two will discuss Heart of Darkness. In Conrad's Heart of Darkness, racism and racist stereotypes of Africans, such as savagery and darkness, become associated with European whites through irony. Conrad reveals that the Europeans view the Africans as savages, because of their outward customs. The Africans only appear savage in their observed behaviors to the Europeans, such as Marlow. However, ironically, the behavior of the Europeans, when subjected to moral analysis turn out to be worse in every way. ▼ This thesis explores the archetypal theme of initiation in selected texts by Joseph Conrad. The Introduction first surveys critical attention to initiatory motifs in Conrad with the objective of demonstrating the need for an approach to the topic informed by a more formal and theorized understanding of initiation. It then offers a prima facie case for the centrality of the idea of initiation in Conrad's oeuvre, based on references culled from a range of the author's writings. Chapter One seeks to contextualise initiation by providing a history of anthropological research into and theorisations of the rite, proceeding to a description of its typical structure and functions. A detailed account is given of the most widely accepted model of initiation, Arnold van Gennep's tripartite schema. Moving on to Conrad's writing, Chapter Two draws on both his fiction and more personal writings in order to provide a provisional account of the writer's own understanding of initiation and its importance, and to offer some explanation of why Conrad should have been prompted to accord the motif such prominence in his work. Conrad's presentation and (impliedly) his understanding of initiation was never entirely consistent and underwent some change in the course of his writing career. The critical assessment of "Typhoon" in Chapter Three depicts Conrad's more optimistic conception of initiation as a rite benefitting both society, by promoting solidarity, and the individual, by advancing self-knowledge. Chapter Four introduces, via analyses of the novellas "Youth" and "The Shadow Line", that variation on the motif of initiation which is more typical of its manifestation in Conrad: the failure of individuals to complete their cycles of initiation. Chapter Five identifies those characteristics of initiation which appear to be determinative in the representations of incomplete initiation in Conrad's work. Initiation seems to play out approximately seven paradoxes; the impact of some of these is examined through analysis of the initiatory ordeals of the main protagonists in The Secret Agent. Integral to this discussion is an attempt to demonstrate the vital role which initiation plays in the healthy maintenance not only of social order but also of faith and life itself. The Conclusion summarises the more important findings of the study and indicates some directions for further, related research.

▼ This dissertation studies the four major works of Jose Donoso which belong to what could be termed his "Chilean cycle" of novels. This cycle comprises Coronacion, Este domingo, El lugar sin l(')imites, and El obsceno pajaro de la noche. The purpose of the study is to determine the structure of the point of view of the narrator. The research is based on semiotic theories of language, particularly those of Boris Uspensky, and includes much of the contemporary French theories of semiotic criticism. The dissertation attempts to construct a format for the study of the point of view of the narrator, basing itself on, but not restricting itself to, the theories of Uspensky. In every respect the dissertation endeavors to restrict its approach to an entirely intrinsic method, based on the idea that the novel exists apart from the man whose name appears on the cover. For the purpose of this study, the novel has been examined on four partially theoretical levels: the spatio-temporal, the phraseological, the psychological and the ideological. This method presupposes an additional distinction between what could be termed the "surface level," that which is immediately and physically observable, and the "deep structure," comprising the ideological level or "world view" basic to each novel. It could be stated that we find the "point of view" of the narrator in the surface structure of the first three levels and the "perspective" or world view in the "deep structure." The first chapter discusses in detail the history of the study of point of view in the novel as a genre, the various theories, including those of Uspensky, and sets forth the methods and procedures used. Each of the following chapters is dedicated to an individual novel, each novel being studied on all four of the levels mentioned. While the works of Donoso have often been studied with respect to their dedication of the deterioration of a particular society, this dissertation deals more specifically with following the process of destruction of the narrator himself. This process can be observed by means of a detailed examination of the structure and function of the point of view in each separate novel. The various stages of development can be observed clearly begining with Coronacion and culminating in El obsceno pajaro de la noche. In Coronacion and Este domingo we can observe the deterioration of the point of view of the narrator. In the former novel, the deterioration of the point of view is linked with the conflict between past and present; in the latter novel we see this dichotomy expanded to include two basic narrators. In El lugar sin límites there is a schism within the personality, and therefore the point of view, of the main character. The El obsceno pajaro de la noche we are confronted with an "open" novel in which the reader must participate. Here we see the complete destruction of the point of view of the narrator and, in effect, the destruction of the narrator himself.
