El objeto de esta tesis está representado por las repeticiones de palabras parciales, palabras que, además de las letras regulares, pueden tener un número de símbolos desconocidos,llamados símbolos "agujeros" o "no sé qué". Más concretamente, se presenta y se resuelve una extensión de la noción de repetición establecida por Axel Thue. Investigamos las palabras parciales con un número infinito de agujeros que cumplen estas propiedades y, también las palabras parciales que conservan las propiedades después de la inserción de un número arbitrario de agujeros, posiblemente infinito. Luego, hacemos un recuento del número máximo de 2-repeticiones distintas compatibles con los factores de una palabra parcial. Se demuestra que el problema en el caso general es difícil, y estudiamos el problema en el caso de un agujero. Al final, se estudian algunas propiedades de las palabras parciales sin fronteras y primitivas (palabras sin repeticiones) y se da una caracterización del lenguaje de palabras parciales con una factorización crítica. Following a classical conception of Artificial Intelligence (one that aims a definition of cognitive mechanisms and their implementation in computers), this thesis explores the problem of knowledge organization. In particular, it draws attention to the linguistic and semantic memory, trying to find out how semantic relations emerge between words. To achieve these objectives, we rely on three main sources: use of empirical data from psycholinguistics and neuropsychology; the use of complex systems (statistical physics) methodology to build and simulate dynamic models; and finally the utilization of technologies at our disposal both for obtaining new data (Internet) as well as sufficient storage capacity and processing speed for massive data manipulation. From this point of view, rooted in Cognitive Science, many applications may arise, some of them strongly linked to current problems in the field of Computer Science, such as unsupervised information extraction, enrichment of databases and language electronic resources (Wikipedia, WordNet, etc.). and improve consultation systems (query-based systems). In Chapter 2 the methodologies that have helped build the rest of the work are established. Chapter 3 is devoted to clarify (i) the kind of data that have been used in the large-scale study of language and cognitive phenomena around it, and (ii) review some of the major contributions to the date about language and cognition. In Chapter 4 the Random Inheritance Model is introduced, which represents an attempt to understand how does semantic similarity between words and semantic categories emerge. Results are compared with empirical data obtained from responses with human subjects. In Chapter 5 we present a model of semantic degradation which emulates neurodegenerative processes, and predicts experimental observations from Alzheimer's Disease patients in the field of neuropsychology. In the study of such degenerative processes different multidisciplinary interests converge, ranging from cognition itself to percolation theory in statistical physics. Chapter 6 is finally devoted to a global reflection of this memory. "Deep vein thrombosis: Study of the effects of walking and of the implantation of vena cava filters through biomechanical simulations". This thesis describes a research that was carried out through computer simulations. The objective was to study specific aspects related to deep vein thrombosis. These aspects were studied from a purely mechanical point of view, in two different situations: effects of walking on a thrombotic popliteal vein, and effects of the implantation of four different vena cava filters. The problem was approached by calculating the values of the physical magnitudes that describe the most relevant aspects by means of numerical simulations. Several methodologies were developed to design and implement these simulations. For these purposes some taylor-made codes were created to be used along with a set of open source software packages. Regarding the effects of walking on the popliteal vein it was concluded that the extension/compression of the semimembranous muscle yields an increase of the vein diameter and an improvement in the blood flow. It was also concluded and quantified to what extent this improvement in blood flow is reduced when blood flow is increased. Regarding vena cava filters, the most relevant conclusions are related to the effect of blood flow on the filters themselves. The forces of friction and pressure exerted on the filters in different conditions of flow rates or blood viscosities have been quantified. Four different filters could be compared quantitatively with respect to the forces exerted on them. In addition reliable estimates of the total forces exerted for all filters when there are variations in flow/heart rate and/or blood viscosity were obtained.
