髪を染める人口が世界的に増加し、染毛の市場は現在も拡大の一途を辿っていている。最も多く用いられている酸化染毛剤においては、染毛の際に頭皮上で化学反応をさせて染色が進行する。その使用に伴う染毛剤の急性毒性(皮膚のかぶれ・毛髪の傷みなど)や慢性毒性(アレルギー・薄毛症・脱毛症・白髪化・再生不良貧血・リンパ腫・白血病・悪性腫瘍など)が問題視されている。また、染毛にともなう廃液が下水道に大量に流されている。以上の問題から、人体と環境への負荷を低減させた染毛法が強く望まれている。そのような状況のもとで、安全性のより高い染毛用染料カテキノンが開発された。本論文は、染毛用染料カテキノンの実用化へ向けた化学合成による染料生成の高効率化と染料の染色特性について述べている。
