▼ During the Gilded Age, the use of elaborate architectural ornament extended to the facades of tenements built for the working class in Boston and New York. Yet these lavish "decorated tenements," which used industrially-made ornament, did not represent the established view of how a tenement should look. Elite architects, prominent citizens, and housing reformers almost universally created spartan buildings when designing for these classes. In contrast, most of the decorated tenements were built by immigrant entrepreneurs, who remade the landscape of their communities in a way that challenged the notion of tenement districts as sites of unmitigated austerity. The dominant narrative on housing in this period derives from a reform literature that has focused on elite experiments in building and on regulating architecture for the poor. This study, instead, utilizes extensive vernacular architecture fieldwork methods and documentary research to put the more common decorated tenement at its center. The immigrant builders of these structures demonstrated their accommodation to an American landscape of material prosperity by using ornament to tap into longstanding associations with stability, power, and, surplus. In doing so they created an identifiable building type that represents an intersection of European sensibilities, industrial production, American material surplus, social striving, and cultural aspiration. As chapter one demonstrates, the antebellum period saw the rise of explicitly classed landscapes for the working class. Full of worn-out buildings these neighborhoods were dismissed as 'slums.' Chapter two examines the complex web of people who built the decorated tenement, immigrant builders, and architects who largely wiped away the physical severity of the slum. Chapter three explores the design and decoration of the tenement, describing the ways in which ornament was used on these buildings, its production, cost, availability, and meanings. The decorated tenement was part of a wider phenomena described in chapter four in which forms formerly associated with the working class were replaced with industrially-made goods in styles associated with the elite. Chapter five details how the Arts and Crafts movement for aesthetic purity corresponded to the social and cultural simplicity manifested in the housing reform movement.

Esta tese estuda a relação entre as condições da moradia e o desempenho escolar de crianças residentes em cortiços. O estudo foi desenvolvido com alunos da quarta série, da Escola Municipal de Ensino Fundamental Duque de Caxias, localizada no Bairro do Glicério, distrito da Liberdade, região que possui grande concentração desse tipo de moradia. Para situar o objeto de estudo, os três primeiros capítulos do trabalho enfocam o problema da habitação, destacadamente, dos cortiços, a história de exclusão escolar das crianças pobres e o significado do espaço para as crianças. Nos dois capítulos seguintes, é desenvolvido o objeto do estudo. Utilizou-se para isso, a metodologia qualitativa e posta em prática através de contato direto com grupos de pessoas selecionadas e visitas às moradias dos alunos. O trabalho conclui que o desempenho escolar das crianças pesquisadas é prejudicado pelas precárias condições de moradia. Finalizando, traz sugestões para as políticas públicas de moradia popular no centro da cidade e para a política da educação.

This work analyzes the relationship between living conditions and school development of children living in tenement housing. The study was based on children students of \"Escola Municipal de Ensino Fundamental Duque de Caxias\", placed at Glicerio neighborhood, at Liberdade district. The region holds a large number of this kind of housing. The first three chapters of the work emphasizes the housing problems, the tenement-house, the history of poor children exclusion from the school and the meaning of the place for the children to contextualize the study aim. In the following two chapters, it was developed the study aim. It was adopted the qualitative methodology and through the direct contact with selected group of people and visitations to the students housing. The work concluded that the school performance of surveyed children is prejudiced by the precarious living conditions. Finally the work provides suggestions for the social housing public policies in the city centre and the general education policies.

▼ Diplomová práce na téma „Polyfunkční dům“ je zpracována ve formě projektové dokumentace dle platných předpisů. Jedná se o novostavbu polyfunkčního bytového domu s celkově 16 bytovými jednotkami o velikosti 2+1 až 4+kk. Ke každému bytu náleží garáž a sklep v 1NP. Dále se v objektu nacházejí 2 kancelářské prostory s kapacitou asi 12 zaměstnanců a 3 provozovny. Ve dvou menších provozech bude kadeřnický salon a prodejna Apple. Posledním provozem bude cykloprodejna s prodejní plochou 263 m2. Je navržena zděná nepodsklepená budova skládající se ze dvou částí se 4 nadzemními podlažími, tyto části jsou spojené jednopodlažní částí. Celá budova je osově souměrná. Střecha je navržena plochá se sklonem 3%. Nad jednopodlažní částí bude vegetační střecha a terasy s kamennou dlažbou, ve 4 NP budou střešní terasy s keramickou dlažbou a nad 4NP bude střešní plášť stabilizován oblázkovým násypem. Dům se nachází ve městě Kroměříž v klidné části města nedaleko od historického centra. Okolí objektu je určeno pro zástavbu rodinnými domy. V těsné blízkosti se nachází základní škola a atletické hřiště. Objekt je navržen zděný z konstrukčního systému Livetherm na základových pasech. Stropní konstrukce jsou betonové. Diplomová práce je zpracována jako realizační dokumentace stavebně konstrukčního řešení se studiemi a podklady. Součástí je také tepelně technické a požární řešení objektu a návrh kanalizace.; The Master’s thesis on the theme „Multi function house“ is drafted as a building documentation according to the relevant laws and standards. The project processes a documentation of a new multi fiction apartment house construction with overall 16 flats. Their sizes are from a flat 2+1 to a flat with 4 rooms and kitchenette. Every flat has a garage and a cellar in the first floor. In the house there are 2 offices with a capacity about 12 employees and also 3 commercial premises. Hairdressing parlor and an Apple store are going to by situated into two smaller premises. In the last premise with 263 m2 of floorspace there is going to be a cycling shop. The project is designed as a brick building without basement. The building has two parts with four floors and these parts are united by a single-storey part. The whole building is symetric. The roof is designed as a platform with tend of 3%. On top of the first floor there is going to be a vegetation roof and a roof teracce with a flagging. On the fourth floor there are going to be roof teracces with ceramic pavement. Over the fourth floor there is going to be a roof cllading laden by pebbles. The house is situated in the town Kroměříž, in the pacific neighbourhood near to the historical town center. The neighbourhood of the object is determined for a building-up of family houses. Nearby the house there is a primary school and an athletic ground. The brick object is designed by a construction system Livetherm on the wall footings. The ceiling constructions are from concrete. The Master’s thesis is made as a project realization of building construction part with studies and design fundamentals.… Advisors/Committee Members: Čupr, Karel (advisor).
