▼ The present paper discussed the importance of various types of
subjective experiences, especially under the educational setting. The concept of
subjective well-being (SWB) and related fields have been studied for decades. Despite the emergence of various definitions of SWB, a universal and concrete framework of the SWB has not yet been developed. The purpose of this study is to develop an operational framework of SWB with the use of a dataset collected from Macau containing 2,327 high school students. The students filled out a questionnaire with SWB related items and other variables. An 8-factor SWB model was proposed and the eight factors included pleasant and unpleasant affect, and general life satisfaction with 4 particular domains of satisfaction relating to the educational setting. These 4 domains of satisfaction were self, health, family, and school.
The result in general supported the proposed SWB framework. The comparisons of the SWB factor models were made between different demographic groups to examine the potential group differences. There were non-significant correlation estimations between pleasant and unpleasant affect in the groups of male and senior students. This finding contradicted to previous studies and suggested that the cultural values might take place in the effects of gender and other relevant demographic variables on SWB. The implications of the findings and the limitations of this study were discussed in the content.

▼ Scapes examines the
experience of the oneiric landscape, conceived through the place of the artwork. Created photographs, videos and the installation are regarded as places that blend the inner space with the outer. Fukei, the Japanese concept of landscape, serves as a framework through which I explore the idea of a personal engagement with a place, and its relationships to the conceptions of space and landscape. Influenced by the philosophy of Gaston Bachelard, space is viewed as an expansion of one's intimate being. The thesis also addresses cross-disciplinary discourse on the meaning of place and its new found significance within the field of photography and related media.

▼ Family-based migration is deemed to be a principal method of international relocation. Within this category, spouses make up a significant percentage, yet their subjective experiences of migration are largely underrepresented in academic literature. In a world where numbers and statistics linked to globalisation and relocation dominate, there is a need to revert to the human experience; to put a face to the figures. Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) aims to represent and interpret experiences, offering an insider’s perspective on phenomenon linked to contemporary living.
This paper explores the subjective experience of couples who have come to Finland by the migration route of spousal reunification. Participants represent a well-educated, skilled workforce and consist of six couples range in age from mid-20s to 30s. By means of semi-structured, qualitative interviews, these couples explain and make sense of their migratory experiences; from the initial decision of the “sponsor” to relocate, the application process for spousal reunification and the long-awaited reunion, to the adaptation period to a shared life in a new society. Herein, they explore their many turbulent emotions, bureaucratic and practical challenges and integration into Finnish society.
The primary research question “How do couples explain their subjective experience of migration via family reunification?”, is followed by “What meanings do they attribute to this experience?” and “How do they account for this lived experience?”. Such matters are given in-depth interpretations, encompassing emotions and the personal consequences of migration.
This study offers a novel insight into the experiences of an underrepresented population in academic research. The Finnish setting gives the paper an interesting angle, given the country’s recent adaptation to a “receiving society” for migrants. As such, the results add to a growing body of literature related to modern day migratory patterns and experiences. These findings offer insight into personal accounts of relocation and provide a basis for future research, in addition to practical applications relevant to migration processes.

▼ This study explored the infusion of smartphone technologies into hospitality service
experience from a phenomenological approach. In-depth interviews were conducted with smartphone users who had firsthand hospitality service
experience. Data analysis revealed four unique patterns within smartphone-equipped customers’ service experiences: the extended control facilitated by smartphone technologies, the functional gap between mediated and interpersonal services, the infusion of solitude into a communal
experience, and the interactions among different service processes. Based on these results, this study developed a conceptual framework of the infusion of smartphone technologies in hospitality service
experience. Theoretical and managerial implications of the findings were also discussed.

▼ This study set out to explore the
subjective
experience of crises and life changes in the family which precede
the onset of schizophrenia. The motivation for it arose from the
vulnerability-stress model of schizophrenia which proposes that
environmental factors such as stressful life events may help to
trigger the onset or exacerbation of symptoms in people who have a
genetic vulnerability for the condition. Related research suggests
that crises and life changes in the family can contribute to the
stress experienced by those who go on to become psychologically
disturbed. This has led to an increased interest in accessing the
subjective experience of schizophrenia as shared by individuals and
their families through the use of narratives to provide alternative
perspectives on the condition. Indeed, a growing body of evidence
from research conducted with people diagnosed with schizophrenia
suggests that the content of their actions and statements can be
construed as meaningful and logical in the context of their family
and life situations. Four individuals who had been diagnosed with
schizophrenia and their families participated in this study. In
each case study, two interviews were conducted, one with the
individual participant and a second interview with the individual
and those members of their family that were willing to attend. The
interviews were guided by a semistructured interview schedule and
data from the interviews was analysed using content analyses and
the most prominent themes were discussed in relation to the
literature. The themes in the data describe the participants’
subjective experience of the many crises and life events and change
in psychological functioning that precedes the onset of florid
psychotic symptoms. These findings suggest that the schizophrenic
symptoms of the participants in this study helped to absorb the
impact of family stressors and played a fundamental role in keeping
the family systems intact. The associated behaviour appeared to
sustain the roles in the family as well as long-standing patterns
of interaction between the family members. The numerous interacting
influences and sheer variation in the
experience of just four
families indicates that much still needs to be understood about the
experience of schizophrenia. It is recommended that future research
investigate how the
subjective understanding of schizophrenia
affects the lives of those affected. Copyright

▼ The effects of age and self-regulation on duration judgments are both previously explored parameters (e.g., Block, Zakay, & Hancock, 1998; Vohs & Schmeichel, 2003). However, age has not been examined as a potential moderator of the
relationship between self-regulation and the experience of time. It was hypothesized that older participants would experience the passage of time as being faster than younger participants when self-regulating, but that no differences would be found
between age groups in the control condition. Older (M = 52.4 years) and younger participants (M = 18.9 years) assigned either to a self-regulation or a control condition each completed four tasks and were asked to estimate when specified lengths of time
had passed (i.e., duration judgments) for each task. Results indicate that age differences in the experience of time have not emerged by middle age, and that the effect of self-regulation on the experience of time may depend upon an important
methodological factor - the type of duration judgment being made.

▼ When looking at the photobook as medium, it becomes apparent that the photobook has mostly been discussed as a presentation and storage tool but not as a medium of its own. Approaching the photobook as a medium from a historical perspective, it is interesting that the photobook, when discussed in an academic framework, has been theorized in matter of style and substance, looking at the evolution of the design and content of the photobook, but not in audience
experience. At first glance, walking as a physical act and the reader-like walking through a photobook share the superficial characteristic of the possibility of freedom, as both the chosen path through the photobook and through walking is steered by the reader-spectator’s unique personality and life
experience, which is not completely controlled by the author-artist and as such can have an unpredictable outcome. In this thesis, I aim to substantiate this claim. The reader-spectator’s hand turning the photobook’s pages are reminiscent of the wanderer’s feet exploring a path. To underline this argument, the act of walking is interpreted as metaphor. Where in an installation or exhibition space the spectator approached the artworks literally through their feet, now the reader-spectator approaches the photobook with their hands. In approaching the reader-spectator
experience from this perspective, this research becomes also an investigation of the medium of the photobook.

We meet the tendency that senility at this
time is constructed as a problem, everything, is associated with
deficiencies in senility, poor health, financial problems, weak
social ties all attributed to the elderly, in this way a negative
discourse is made about senility. This investigation aims to
contribute to social work in gerontology knowledge creation in
attempt to reveal the positive experience in senility. The object
of the research - reveal the positive experience construction in
senility through the concept of subjective happiness. The study
raised the following challenges: 1) to reveal how the old and the
elderly inner personal resources strengthen the positive experience
at senility constructing through subjective concept of happiness.
2) to reveal how the old and the elderly outer environmental
resources strengthen the positive experience at senility
constructing through subjective concept of happiness and what are
the factors stops that. To reach the objective of the study a
qualitative research was made. The researcher sought to reveal the
social services system members, the old and the elderly, subjective
concept of happiness through the positive experience at senility
construction. The study followed the assumption that positive
experience is socially constructed and the social reality is
revealed through the interaction with the study participants. The
study participants - 5 clients of the social service centre support

▼ This study set out to explore the
subjective experience
of crises and life changes in the family which precede the onset of
schizophrenia.
Copyright

▼ Occupational scientists and occupational therapists believe that people
experience time and occupation differently, and that understanding these unique
subjective experiences is essential to enhance the understanding of occupational participation, health and well-being. Yet the efforts toward the identification and development of ways of understanding people's unique
subjective experiences are limited. In this dissertation, the researcher provides the theoretical underpinning of a newly developing instrument designed to capture the objective and
subjective experiences of occupational engagement titled the Daily Experiences of Pleasure, Productivity and Restoration Profile (PPR Profile) (Atler, 2008) and reports the validity evidence of the PPR Profile as examined in two studies. Cognitive interviewing was used in the first study to examine validity evidence based on test content, response processes, and the consequences of completing the instrument. The study provides beginning validity evidence of the PPR Profile's use as an instrument designed to capture the
subjective experiences of daily activities. In addition, the study illustrates the benefits of using cognitive interviewing as a means of engaging clients who may potentially use the instrument in the development process. In the second study, validity evidence related to consequential and convergent validity was examined using a mixed method design. Adults living with the consequences of stroke completed three health surveys and the PPR Profile for three days. Use of the PPR Profile increased awareness of daily activities and related experiences. Although there was limited convergent validity evidence gathered in the study, consequential validity evidence indicated that participants' completion of the PPR Profile led to reflection and examination. However awareness was not always seen by participants as beneficial. Potential reasons for the limited convergent validity found are discussed.

▼ For many years the focus of research on child well-being and development has been
primarily on the dynamics of the mother-child relationship. The mother was seen as the more
influential parent as she spends more time with the children. The father’s role in the
development process was thus undermined. Fortunately research on the father’s involvement in
a child’s life has improved over the past thirty years. Where previously fathers were mostly
perceived as the breadwinners and providers they are now also considered as being caregivers
who are more closely involved with their children and the accompanying responsibilities.
Research indicates the importance of a father’s role in child development and has found that the
intellectual, emotional and social development of a child is influenced by the father.
The most beneficial circumstances for children to grow up in is where both of the
biological parents are part of the household, satisfied with their marital relationship and loving
towards their children. Unfortunately there is a significant increase in South African families
where the father is absent and where the mother is burdened with additional responsibilities.
However, a father can be emotionally absent despite physical proximity and emotionally absent
fathers can be included when describing fatherlessness due to the destructive effect it has on
children.
Some research indicates that a father is the most significant factor in his daughter’s life
and the quality of their relationship influences her personality and general well-being in life.
Most literature focusing on the paternal parenting role is more focused on the father-son dyad,
the least studied parent-adult child dyad is that of adult daughters and fathers. A great number of
research studies on the subjects of divorce, single parents, physically absent fathers and the
resulting effects on males are available. Much less literature, especially in the South African context, can be found to focus on and explain the experiences of young adult women who grew
up with an emotionally absent father.
The aim of the study was thus to explore the subjective experiences of young adult
women who grew up with an emotionally absent father. A qualitative research method was used
with a phenomenological approach as research design. Eleven voluntary, 20-31 year old adult
women, participated in the study and were recruited by word of mouth. Data were collected
through in-depth interviews that were audio taped and transcribed verbatim. Transcribed data
were analysed by means of thematic analysis from which themes and sub-themes were derived.
Two main themes with sub-themes were identified. It was found that the participants
experienced their fathers as emotionally absent because it was difficult to share their emotions
with them, the participants' fathers did not show affection or express their love. They showed no
interest, approval or acknowledgement and the participants found it difficult to trust their fathers.

▼ This thesis challenges the generalized way in which walkability is being framed and implemented in Detroit.
Most people in American cities, especially in Detroit, are unable to take advantage of the social, economical, and health benefits that walkability provides due to how non-conductive our cities are to pedestrians. As current planning methods continue to challenge this, walkability has become essential in the revitalization of the cities of today, and the future. Through urban design, this thesis aimed to create a strategic framework plan that would begin to reintroduce walkability to under-served neighborhoods in Detroit. These design strategies are focused on allowing the residents of Detroit’s neighborhoods to take full advantage of the social, economical, and health benefits that are present in walkable communities.

This PhD tackles the question of the subjective experience of schoolchildren and college students facing daily classroom assessment practices. It seeks to account for pupils’ explanations about their school actions. Our issue is to understand what makes sense to pupils through different assessment practices together with their unique perception. Our research is therefore part of a comprehensive logic. Our methodology is based on the combination of class observations, semi-structured interviews with parents, schoolchildren year 1 and year 5, junior high school students year 6, teachers of the 1st and 2nd degree, completed by a questionnaire carried out for schoolchildren year 5 and college students year 6 and 7. Daily assessment practices as positive or negative experiences whose accumulation and frequency significantly influence the student mobilization are to be investigated.

▼ Web 2.0 and social media enable people to create,
share and discover information instantly anywhere, anytime. A great
amount of this information is
subjective information – the
information about people's
subjective experiences, ranging from
feelings of what is happening in our daily lives to opinions on a
wide variety of topics.
Subjective information is useful to
individuals, businesses, and government agencies to support
decision making in areas such as product purchase, marketing
strategy, and policy making. However, much useful
subjective
information is buried in ever-growing user generated data on social
media platforms, it is still difficult to extract high quality
subjective information and make full use of it with current
technologies.Current subjectivity and sentiment analysis research
has largely focused on classifying the text polarity – whether the
expressed opinion regarding a specific topic in a given text is
positive, negative, or neutral. This narrow definition does not
take into account the other types of
subjective information such as
emotion, intent, and preference, which may prevent their
exploitation from reaching their full potential. This dissertation
extends the definition and introduces a unified framework for
mining and analyzing diverse types of
subjective information. We
have identified four components of a
subjective experience: an
individual who holds it, a target that elicits it (e.g., a movie,
or an event), a set of expressions that describe it (e.g.,
"excellent", "exciting"), and a classification or assessment that
characterize it (e.g., positive vs. negative). Accordingly, this
dissertation makes contributions in developing novel and general
techniques for the tasks of identifying and extracting these
components. We first explore the task of extracting sentiment
expressions from social media posts. We propose an
optimization-based approach that extracts a diverse set of
sentiment-bearing expressions, including formal and slang
words/phrases, for a given target from an unlabeled corpus. Instead
of associating the overall sentiment with a given text, this method
assesses the more fine-grained target-dependent polarity of each
sentiment expression. Unlike pattern-based approaches which often
fail to capture the diversity of sentiment expressions due to the
informal nature of language usage and writing style in social media
posts, the proposed approach is capable of identifying sentiment
phrases of different lengths and slang expressions including
abbreviations and spelling variations. Unlike supervised approaches
which require data annotation when applied to a new domain, the
proposed approach is unsupervised and thus is highly portable to
new domains. We then look into the task of finding opinion targets
in product reviews, where the product features (product attributes
and components) are usually the targets of opinions. We propose a
clustering approach that identifies product features and groups
them into aspect categories. Unlike many existing approaches that
first extract features…

▼ The regular practice of meditation has been shown to reduce stress and increase well-being. However, there is limited information on how meditation feels or is subjectively experienced by the meditator. This naturalistic inquiry uses a phenomenological approach to explore the phenomenon of meditation as lived
experience with a group of novice meditators taking part in a 4-week mindfulness meditation program.
Nineteen college students were divided into 4 groups. Each group met once a week for a 30-minute guided meditation session followed by a 30-minute focus group during which participants shared their experiences. Individual interviews were conducted at the end of the study. The focus groups and individual interviews were audio recorded.
Analysis of the transcribed data revealed 12 key constituents of the
experience of meditation occurring at different stages of the meditation process. The key constituents were then placed along a timeline of a typical 30-minute session. A diagrammatic representation was created to illustrate the general "shape" of a meditation session. The variable nature of the meditation
experience was also revealed: no two meditation sessions were experienced in the same way by the
same meditator, and no two meditators had identical meditation experiences, although there were inherent similarities. A sample of the language novice meditators use to describe their experiences was also documented.
The Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-14) was administered pre-study and post-study to measure changes in perceived stress over the course of the study. Reductions in perceived stress were measured in 76.5% of the participant group, or 13 of the 17 students who completed the study. These results were significant, t (16)=3.49, p=0.003.
The findings in this study show meditation to have the distinctive characteristics of an altered state of consciousness. Meditation may be regarded as a self-induced, adaptive, altered state of consciousness that enables the meditator to relax and effectively reduce levels of perceived stress.
These findings provide a new perspective of meditation, particularly with regard to how meditation is subjectively experienced by novice meditators. This information may help to demystify meditation and encourage those considering this healthful practice.

▼ Previous constructivist research was integrated with a field study to investigate the hypothesis that the
subjective perceptions of the current social, security and economic situation of the high and low-income groups in South Africa differ to the extent that they could be said to be living in totally different worlds of phenomenological
experience. The data demonstrated clear differences when coded in terms of worldviews along an Optimism-Pessimism Continuum. A number of additional processing phenomena and social dynamics able to influence these perceptions were also identified from an interpretative analysis of the data. The results were explained in terms of the cueing and activation of specific schemata constructed from income-related prior experiences associated with each group and led to the conclusion that income and living conditions could well be factors contributing to the ongoing confrontations between government and impoverished communities. A number of recommendations to improve inter-group relations were included.

▼ The built environment within healthcare institutions is of critical importance to persons with dementia, as the characteristics of the interior environment, the lived
experience within, and the reciprocal nature of that exchange can be directly related to their well being. Yet the role of the environmentand more importantly, the role of the patient as a primary author towards conceptions of what that physical environment should look and feel likerarely feature in routine dementia patient satisfaction assessments.
This research sought to understand whether patients with dementia have the capacity to perceive the institutional space and place around them, and if so, how. Participants with mild to moderate dementia living in an institutional setting who could provide consent were asked a number of lived
experience questions. The responses were videotaped and scored qualitatively.
The results suggest that patients with dementia are aware of the institutional space around them, and can be active agents when contributing to thoughtfully designed environments that promote the health and well being of its residents. If persons with dementia are thought of as active participants within the design of the built environment, then this can lead to new reconceptualization of spatial domains and ultimately impact care.

▼ In recent year’s multimedia services like Video-on-Demand (VoD) and mobile video streaming, videos for e-learning, video conferencing are growing predominantly, and the user’s expectations towards the quality video are increasing as the technology is developing. There are different video streaming protocols are used for streaming videos from servers to the client. Recently, Adobe Systems developed Real Time Messaging Protocol (RTMP) (proprietary) for streaming audio, video and data over the Internet between a Flash player and a Media Server. On the other hand, Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) is a well-known and efficient protocol; it has achieved the popularity in multimedia services like VoD. Hence, a qualitative research is to be performed on comparing the two Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) based protocols, under sustainable network conditions for tracing the QoE results from acquired User Ratings (UR). This thesis investigates the quality assets on network parameters over VoD streaming. The study addresses the subjective assessment of RTMP and HTTP streaming protocols, by varying network parameters (like packet loss and delay variation) in a controlled and repeatable environment. The packet loss and delay variation are altered by the network emulator NetEm [1, 2] in between the server and client. The video collected at the client end are evaluated by using subjective assessment, MOS (Mean Opinion Score), following the international Telecommunication Union (ITU) Recommendations [3]. Based on our results it was found that HTTP is having better ratings, when there are more packet losses compared to RTMP. RTMP accomplished better at minimum loss of packets. However, in the case of delay performance of HTTP is better than RTMP.

▼ The elaborate and multidimensional systems that are involved in the personal and subjective experience of empathy are largely unexplored. Nevertheless, when empathy is measured as a static trait there is considerable evidence that individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia and schizotypy demonstrate altered and reduced empathic abilities respectively (Thirioux, 2014). The aim of this study was to investigate the effect that the context of reading literary fiction has on a portion of the process of empathic responding in relation to schizotypal traits, taking into consideration personal factors including current mood. A new measure for the use of momentary assessment of empathy was developed and tested based on the IRI (Davis, 1980) called the AIRI (Adapted Interpersonal Reactivity Index). Psychometric analyses indicate that AIRI is an adequate measure of empathy, particularly for the use of real-time data collection. The internal consistencies of the AIRI scales are comparable to those of the IRI, and in general AIRI scales are correlated with similar IRI scales and with the TEQ as expected. The AIRI Perspective Taking scale has equally low correlations with the Hogan Empathy Scale as the corresponding IRI scale. Results include that, as predicted, the participants’ SPQ total scores are positively associated with the Personal Distress scale of the IRI and are not correlated with the IRI Empathic Concern Scale of the IRI. However, contrary to predications, the participants’ SPQ total scores were not significantly associated with the Perspective Taking scale of the IRI (although the association was negative, as predicted), and the participants’ total SPQ scores were positively correlated with the AIRI Fantasy scale (contrary to prediction). Although there was no control group, there is some evidence that reading a fictional narrative increased Perspective Taking scale scores on the IRI, and results showed a decrease on Fantasy Scale and Personal Distress items on the IRI. Using a piece of literary fictional narrative as a stimulus to elicit empathy holds promise for future studies and suggests including literature, the arts, and the assessment of subjective experiences of schizotypal populations, as the current study’s results showed the AIRI to be more highly correlated with the participants SPQ score when compared to the original IRI. We are hopeful that the adapted version of the IRI developed here, when used with real-time elicitation of empathy using a fictional literary narrative, should help to understand state empathy better, highlighting the importance of context, mood, and personal experience in those with varying levels of schizotypal traits, as well as being useful in other research on empathy.

▼ Media experiences in social media platforms generate different sets of positive emotions that can not only shift tourists' opinions or perspectives but also affect their overall well-being. Such well-being effects could be a potent driver for behavioural intention as well. Social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram have played a determinant role in eliciting those positive emotions, such as self-transcendence, as the product of an eudaimonic media
experience, which in turn has a profound impact on tourist motivation. With users nowadays choosing a destination based on how “Instagrammable” it is, the growing importance of the role of Instagram in the tourism context has become obvious.

The online gaming activity has been studied in different perspectives and is referred to as one of the preferred so-called "digital natives". Practices and digital consumption of Portuguese youth are anchored to entertainment and video games are listed as the third most common activity. Immersive technologies have transformed this activity into a multiplayer mode of play in a social presence logic characterized by flow. This concept is often termed as "optimal experience" and reflects the state in which the individual is fully involved immersed in action. Flow is a state of mind related to how a person is immersed, has pleasure and is involved in performing a…

The present thesis has as a study object the rules of experience praised by the article 335 of the Code of Civil Action analyzed through the Luhmans Theory of the Social System. Considering the Law as a society subsystem, are analyzed the probatory elements, atypical in its value dichotomy: the value criteria objective/subjective, with emphasis in the subjective aspect. The theses intends to analyze the search of the certainty as a evidence subjective aspect and, therefore, capable to make possible decisions marked by verossimilhança, allowing with this, the use of the Law applicators theoretical common sense, specifically his/her rules of common experience and judgments of value. Important to salient that the experience rules are part of the logical process of the applicators reasoning, integrating, in such a way, the fund of individual culture of each magistrate. On this way, the subjective aspect of the probatory element appreciation is capable to produce complexity in the decisions and, with this, the risk and the unprevisibility. The application of the experience rules, as probatory element, observed through the Theory of the Systems allows the communication due to cognitive opening among the society, each time more differentiated, and the juridical action that searches judicial certainty for the judicial decision as a way of relief of the expectations in the pos-modernity

▼ This dissertation examined the theoretical and empirical implications of Adam's (1978) inferiorization construct for cross-group discrimination research, that is, research that attempts to identify similar themes and patterns across the reported experiences of historically stigmatized groups. The theory of inferiorization states that culturally stigmatizable characteristics are always associated with an interpersonal and institutional communication that one is somehow inferior to a dominant cultural group, cultural image, or community ideal. This dissertation had three goals: first, to show how the inferiorization construct applies to psychology's discrimination literature and delineate its theoretical properties; second, to describe an empirical study that demonstrates how inferiorization can be measured and used to investigate the experiences of social discrimination in college student samples of ethnic minorities, women, gay men and lesbians, and people with disabilities (total n = 263); and third, to relate these experiences to measures of self-perception to examine psychological correlates of inferiorizing experiences. Inferiorization is described as a function of the confluence of stigmatizable personal characteristics, a specific context, and associated cultural myths, an operational definition used to construct items for the Inferiorization Questionnaire. Findings of the empirical portion of this dissertation show that each group, in several contexts, reports the direct or indirect implication that their personal characteristics (that is, race, gender, sexual orientation, or disability) have disadvantageous meaning with respect to some important contextual or cultural ideal, demonstrating that a common aspect of intergroup discriminatory processes is the
subjective experience of the inferiorization of salient differences. Consistent and unique relationships were found between an increase in the frequency of inferiorizing experiences and diminished self-perception. The inferiorization perspective is discussed as a theoretical framework that successfully incorporates and illuminates the shared and unique aspects of the various simultaneous reports of discrimination from stigmatizable social groups.

This Doctorate thesis has as object the experiences of actors and actresses in the creation and presentation of monologues in Rio de Janeiro, from 2006 to 2010. The analysis of this artistic experience is based on classic topics of Social Sciences concerning the modern individual, such as singularity, authenticity and originality. The matter of authorship concerning such monologues is related to perspectives on the western individualistic ideology such as the artistic autonomy and the construction of self, in the complex interweavement of the artist (actor/creative individual) and his/her artwork (monologue/performance/mise-en-scène/text). The monologue seen as an ample artistic project, including the experience of its elaboration, production, presentation, critics and commentaries is an object in progress from which the artist reflects upon him/herself and the world. The monologue can be seen as a personal artistic experience, where the authorial perspective is privileged, stressing and reinforcing aspects regarding the belief in an individual model that express itself as a person capable of self definition. For this research, I analyze three monological experiences: O Animal do Tempo, starred by Ana Kfouri; A Alma Imoral, adapted and starred by Clarice Niskier; and Anticlássico: uma desconferência ou o enigma vazio, created and staged by Alessandra Colasanti.

▼ Adolescence is a significant period of change in physical and psychosocial development of human beings. Being HIV positive and growing up on a dynamically multifaceted HAART treatment, adds to the complexity of adolescence. This study was aimed at exploring the nature of experiences of adolescents who are on long-term Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy (HAART) in Tembisa, Gauteng province. The study is based on a qualitative research method using in-depth semi-structured open-ended interviews and a focus group for data collection. The sample consisted of seven individual adolescent participants, three parents, guardians and caregivers, as well as 11 health care professionals. The thematic data analysis and the phenomelogical analysis methods were used to analyse data qualitative data while descriptive statistics were used to analyse quantitative biographical data.
The study findings cover the negative and positive experiences and the perceived role of HAART treatment over a long period of time. The predominant themes identified from adolescent participants were disclosure of HIV positive status and the stigma surrounding a positive status, early childhood
experience of parental death, challenges of taking HAART treatment, factors influencing adherence and non-adherence to HAART treatment, and lastly, the impact of religion on HAART treatment adherence. The findings suggest that adolescents who are on HAART treatment over an extended period of time
experience drug fatigue. Drug fatigue has far-reaching implications for the health of an adolescent, as it has a higher likelihood that poor adherence or even complete refusal to take HAART treatment will occur. Poor adherence or refusal to take HAART treatment will most likely lead to cross infection and further spread of HIV and AIDS.
A recommendation was made to include the establishment of a youth and adolescent-friendly centre by the hospital – one that is designated for the provision of tailored adolescent services and sensitive to adolescent developmental stages so as to minimise the likelihood of infected adolescents falling through the health care cracks. The introduction of a hospital-based school, an education unit run by dedicated and qualified facilitators focusing on aiding hospitalised learners with catch-up scholarly programmes, was a further recommendation. It was further recommended that reproductive health care needs of adolescents who grow up on HAART treatment be given attention in further research.

▼ Cognitive impairment occurs in up to half of children and adolescents with multiple sclerosis (MS), and may be severe enough to compromise intellectual functioning, academic performance, and daily life function. Working memory (WM), which refers to the cognitive system that temporarily stores information long enough to use while manipulating the information for some purpose, is one of the major executive functions found to be compromised in pediatric-onset MS patients. The current dissertation sought to introduce a computerized cognitive training program (Cogmed) that is novel to the MS population in order to investigate feasibility,
subjective experiences, and individual characteristics related to training outcomes, as well as examine preliminary efficacy of Cogmed in pediatric-onset MS patients. This dissertation employed mixed methods comprising Cogmed-specific training outcomes, performance on pre- and post-training neuropsychological assessment measures, and patient exit interviews. Pediatric-onset MS individuals who were identified as having cognitive difficulties (n = 9) underwent 5-6 weeks of intensive, home-based computerized training on verbal and visual-spatial WM exercises. Patients demonstrated general adherence and tolerance to Cogmed training, and completed training within the recommended 5-6 week timeframe. Almost all patients acknowledged changes in their WM performance as a result of training (n =8), and all patients (n = 9) described the training program as not intruding on their social lives. Age, disease onset, disease duration, and degree of brain atrophy emerged as potential predictors of individual training outcomes, as did intrinsic motivation. All individuals demonstrated improved performance on trained measures of WM and three individuals demonstrated improved performance on select non-trained measures of WM. The findings of this study demonstrate feasibility of implementing Cogmed in pediatric-onset MS patients, warranting subsequent large-scale randomized controlled studies that employ a multimodal approach to data analysis and that pay attention to individual differences that may predict variable training outcomes.

realizuje usklađivanje interesa korisnika i ciljeva oglasne
