▼ The main objectives of this study were to identify and examine types, prevalence and causes of early marriage and to investigate the link between early marriage and parents’ socio-economic status in two peasant communities in Dembia Woreda of North Gondar, Amhara Region. To achieve these objectives, both secondary and primary data sources were used. A mixed study design was employed to collect primary data with a combination of survey, focus group discussion, and key informant interview methods. Both purposive and random sampling techniques were used in selecting samples. The study Woreda and the two peasant associations were selected purposively. Survey respondents (186) were selected using stratified simple random sampling proportional to size, while focus group discussion participants and key informants were selected purposively based on the knowledge of the local language and culture. Data collection instruments included questionnaire, focus group discussion and key informant interview guides. Both qualitative and quantitative data analysis techniques were employed. Accordingly, survey results were analyzed using percentages, frequencies, means, and cross-tabulations, while data from focus group discussions and key informant interviews were organized by themes and described to supplement the quantitative data. Finally, the data gathered through various sources were analyzed thematically using triangulation to increase the reliability, credibility and validity of the research findings. Pertaining to the major findings of the study, four types of early marriage arrangements were identified in the studied peasant associations. Regarding the prevalence of early marriage, 86% of daughters were married below the legal marriage age (18 years).More specifically, the degree of marrying early is differing among wealth groups.Accordinglly, about 97.4% of 39 high and 93% of 71 middle wealth groups of sample parent respondents married off their daughters at an early adolescent age (below 15 years). Only about 39.6% of 58 lower wealth groups married off their daughters below 15 years. However, very low wealth group of parents did not married off their daughters below 15 years. The mean age at first marriage was 12.96 years for daughters and 20.36 years for sons. High, middle, lower and very low wealth groups of sample parent respondents married off their daughters in first marriage at a mean age of 10.4,11.3,15.2, and 18.7 years old, respectively. The major reasons for marrying off daughters early differ among the different wealth groups of parent respondents. The major reasons for high and middle wealth categories of parents were: to form marriage alliance with land and cattle rich families, for honor, to avoid the stigma of being unmarriageable; to get their children married before the resource is getting low. Background: 10-15% of preschool children and 6% of school aged children have a speech sound disorder (SSD) (Williams, 2003). Currently, the cause of the majority of SSDs is unknown. Some researchers posit that deficits in cognitive linguistic skills such as rule derivation, auditory discrimination and memory may underlie some types of SSD. However, no research has been carried out to create norms for a wide range of cognitive function tasks in Typically Developing Children (TDC). Aims: 1) To establish norms for young children’s performance on a range of cognitive assessments. 2) To investigate whether there is a progression with age across the battery of novel cognitive assessments. 3) To research whether there is a relationship between PCC and performance on the cognitive tests. 4) To establish whether SES has an impact on children’s performance. Method: 58 Typically Developing Children(TDC) (3;0-5;08) from a city in the Mid-West of Ireland were assessed using the phonology subtest of the Diagnostic Evaluation of Articulation and Phonology (DEAP, Dodd et al. 2002) as well as five cognitive assessments which aim to assess non-word similarity, numerical concepts, auditory memory, pattern recognition and knowledge of phonological legality. SPSS was used to compute the mean, median and standard deviation for each age in each subtest. Associations between socioeconomic status and performance were also investigated. Results: Normative data revealed that the mean scores on all five novel cognitive tests increased with age. The results showed that children from DEIS schools performed more poorly on the majority of cognitive tests. There were no statistically significant correlations between speech accuracy and the cognitive linguistic assessments beyond the contribution of age. Conclusions: The disassociation between speech accuracy and the scores on the cognitive battery of tests may suggest that deficits in these areas are not the underlying cause of SSDs. However, this a tentative conclusion and further research with a larger, more balanced sample is warranted.

▼ The existence of socially-patterned health (with poorer health generally being experienced by those in more disadvantaged circumstances) is widely recognised. Social differentials have been observed for (inter alia) respiratory disorders, and for cardiovascular disease. One possible explanation for social inequality in these areas of health posits a mediating effect of housing conditions: disadvantaged individuals may face greater exposure to residential hazards (such as dampness), which may in turn adversely influence cardiorespiratory health. However, few studies have examined a complete posited causal chain linking socioeconomic position (SEP) with health via housing. Using pre-existing data, this study constructed detailed representations of the social and residential experiences over adult life (15 to 60 years) of a sample of elderly British people. Both measures of accumulated exposure (to disadvantage, and to housing hazards), and explicit trajectories of social and residential experience, were derived. Construction of trajectories required the development of methods for condensing individuals’ diverse experiences into higher-level groups, in the interests of analytical tractability. Relationships between the derived measures of lifetime exposure and a range of outcomes expressing aspects of cardio-respiratory health in old age were assessed. No persuasive evidence was observed to support the hypothesis that lifetime residential exposures may mediate the relationship between SEP and the health outcomes examined. In addition to testing this specific conceptual model, the study examined how exposure to social disadvantage and to residential risks varied over adult life, identifying distinctive features of the exposure experience which could not readily be captured by the infrequent sampling of SEP commonly featured in health inequality research. The respective merits of such ‘sparse’ sampling and the more intensive sampling used in the study were compared. It was concluded that fully exploiting the additional information captured by intensive sampling requires confronting a number of methodological challenges. Because of this, it is argued that the collection of detailed information on exposures over time does not automatically confer genuine advantages over the hitherto dominant approach of sampling at only a small number of time points. Future development of lifecourse epidemiology will require further debate over how lifetime exposure (to both social and environmental risk factors) can most effectively be represented in quantitative analysis.

Though contribution of women in performing agricultural operations as well as in domestic activities is quite high and hilly areas are no exception. Many studies have pinpointed the issues relating to women, but not much attention has been paid to examine their socio-economic status and livelihood security. In view of the above, the present investigation was planned to throw reasonable light on the various pointers of socio-economic status and livelihood security of women in hilly areas of Himachal Pradesh (India) and Sri Lanka with the specific objectives viz. (i) to identify the key socio-economic pointers contributing to the status of women, (ii) to study entrepreneurial behaviour of women and their involvement in various activities/ organizations for women empowerment / upliftment of the family, community and society and (iii) to examine livelihood security of women and problems faced by them in socio-economic upliftment. newlineThe present study was restricted to tea growing locations of the selected districts. Three tea growing locations were randomly selected from each district, and one village was randomly selected from each selected location. From each sampled village, 25 households were randomly selected, thus, making a total sample size of 150 households. Primary data relating to various parameters of socio economic status, entrepreneurship and livelihood security were gathered through specially designed schedules by survey method for an agricultural year (2006-07). The secondary information was collected from various published/unpublished sources. Tabular and regression techniques were employed to analyse the data. The study revealed that the decisions rights/power lies more with the women of Nuwara Eliya as compared to Kangra. The marital status, education and social participation were the significant pointers determining the status of women in both the study areas. Also, caste was found one of the key pointers in Kangra and type of family was observed as another parameter determining the status of women in Nuwara Eliya. Among the components of entrepreneurial behaviour, achievement motivation, management orientation and risk taking ability in order of ranking were the important pointers for the women of Kangra district. Whereas, achievement motivation, management orientation and ability to co-ordinate the farm activities were found to be the important components of entrepreneurial behaviour for women in Nuwara Eliya. Education, farm income, economic motivation and accessibility to market were identified as the key determinants of entrepreneurial behaviour of women in Kangra district. Whereas, age, farm income and information sources were the important determinants of entrepreneurial behaviour of women of Nuwara Eliya. ▼ An effective and acceptable accountability system for education continues to puzzle educators and researchers. The focus of the present study was on two high profile accountability system models: status-based models and value-added models. Status-based models are those models that only considered the status (pass/fail) of students on achievement tests. Value-added models are those that make an attempt to show the achievement gains that students are making and therefore attribute those gains to the students? educational experiences (e.g., teachers and schools). In particular, the present study investigated how the two models might rank campuses differently when accounting for the low SES indicators of both students and schools. The present study investigated three independent, but connected studies of these two models. First, a comparison of value-added models is presented. Second, a Monte Carlo study is presented comparing the rankings of a status-based accountability system model and a value-added accountability system model. Third, the results from a field study where data from a Texas school district was used to compare the rankings of a status-based accountability system model and a value-added accountability system model are presented. In the latter two studies, evidence is presented showing that the two models ranked campuses differently within each district. This was especially evident when a district had a wide distribution of the campus percentages of low SES students throughout the district. The effect low SES students had on accountability is noticeable in the ranking of the campuses. Campuses with a high percentage of low SES students performed lower under the status-based accountability system model than under the value-added accountability system model. Identifying the correct accountability system model to use in evaluating our schools is extremely important in this age of accountability. Teachers, principals, and superintendents are evaluated on the performance of their students, schools, and districts, and in some cases pay incentives are also attached to these evaluations. The present study shows the need for more research in accountability systems in order to ensure that these evaluations are fair. ▼ The living arrangements and social economic status of households are reportedly a reflection of their coping strategy to shocks. Particularly for African South Africans: labour migration, low and decreasing rates of marriage and HIV/AIDS pandemic among others have clearly affected both the living arrangements and the parental status of African children. In this paper, descriptive statistics were employed to compare the living arrangements and socio-economic status of households with African children according to their parental status. The GHS (2012) data was used to formulate nine exhaustive parental categories and three separate orphan hood (paternal, maternal and double) categories. Basically, a comparison of the living arrangements of multi-generational households, female headed households and households with high dependency ratios was undertaken forchildren who have deceased parents (fathers/mothers/both) to non-orphaned children (both parents are alive) where children live with either or both of their biological parents or guardians. Furthermore, geographical location, household wealth status and the reception of social grants were used as socio-economic status indicators. The results across all the variables show that households with children who are co-residing with both their parents had the preferred outcomes when compared to the other parental statuses. Households with fathers only the mother being deceased or alive but absent also exhibit preferential socio-economic status when compared to households with mothers only the father being either dead or alive but not a resident and in households with children who co-reside with neither of their parents, for reasons of death or mere absenteeism. Basically, the living arrangements and socio-economic status was worse off for the former and latter parental status. Although child poverty was not my outright focus, the wide and deeply worrisome levels of poverty amongst African children motivated this study. In this study, I observed that a greater proportion of households with African children were headed by females. In these households, and in households were children reside with absent parents, children are highly likely to be socialized in some dimensions of poverty. Government can rectify this by correcting some institutional factors. Women face more disadvantages in almost all social, economic and political institutions. Furthermore, these disadvantages are exacerbated in households with single mothers and no adult males. Advisors/Committee Members: Vermaak, Kerry. (advisor).

▼ The major objective of this study was to assess the impact of socio-economic status of the people at uMhlathuze municipality on participation in developmental programmes. A qualitative and quantitative mixed method was applied to investigate perception and attitude on participation of people in development programmes. To guide and direct this study four research questions were formulated and transformed into research hypotheses. The multi-stage random sampling technique was used to sample sixty respondents from eight communities in the research area who completed all the questionnaires items were actually used in the analyses. The hypotheses formulated were tested using the Statistical Programme for Social Science, version 18.0 (SPSS), the Pearson Chi-square test and minimum likelihood expected count ratio analysis were used. Results revealed that income level have significant impact on participation of people in developmental program in the study area; also that alternative income in terms of incentives or stipends provided by the facilitators improves participation in development programmes. Employment statuses have not contributed towards participation in development programmes and that time constraints were a major factor. Prior occupational status and prior satisfaction of previous programmes enhances participation. Small family sizes have impacted significantly to participation. Educational attainments have impacted significantly towards participation. The study found out that, programmes such as the SMMES on skill acquisition, Craft, Tourism and Housing development, have not contributed to alleviate poverty in that people are not aware or well informed of such programs. The study recommended that information dissemination, political tolerance, formation of pressure groups, regular meeting attendance, and provision of supportive policies were factors that would encourage and enhance participation in developmental programmes. Further studies should be geared towards policies that should enhance workers and business peoples’ participation in development programmes. Advisors/Committee Members: Ntombela, N.H (advisor).

▼ This study explored the reflections of post graduate students who completed a semester course called the Personal is the Professional, aimed at facilitating a reflexive and critical thinking. By working with their lived experiences students explored the intricacies of the society they live in and how this influences how they view the world and their professional lives. These include the intersection of gender, race, class and culture as dominant social discourses. In the telling and witnessing of life stories, the study traced how the students’ engagement with personal discourses created shifts in understanding how context shapes how they experience themselves and others. Through narratives, the study showed how students engage in and at times unintentionally contribute to dominant social discourses in their everyday lives. The results suggest that with increased reflexivity, there was a greater sense of personal and collective agency. This was evidenced by students’ ability to recognise and deconstruct their sense of self by looking deeply into the discourses as well as how they have impacted other students in the cohort. This study used qualitative methodology and was theoretically based on Bronfenbrenner’s (1977) Ecological perspective model and Bandura’s social cognitive theory (1989), which allowed the participants to locate themselves in different levels and structures that have impacted their lives. Data was collected through participant observation during class presentations and interactions; written tasks completed by the students throughout the module; and unstructured interviews to explore how students’ understanding of self and others had shifted over a five-month period. The sharing of personal stories in a safe space created the possibility to discover similarities and differences across different cultures, race groups and gender and resulted in a spirit of unity and collective agency. It also created a platform for deeper reflexivity. The written assignments provided a language and framework to create awareness and voice to articulate their experience resulting in a sense of freedom and confidence leading to a perception of greater agency in their personal and professional lives. The findings were discussed in relation to the existing literature, which was aligned to both local and international contexts. ▼ In the Dutch society, Moroccan immigrant youth is overrepresented in the juvenile justice system. In this study, two different explanations for this overrepresentation were investigated. The first theory tested whether a low socio-economic status can contribute to delinquency among Moroccan, Dutch and adolescents from other ethnic minorities. The second theory is based on the model of social defeat. This model hypothesizes that low self-esteem and feelings of being an outsider can lead to delinquent behaviour. This study examined the contribution of low self-esteem to delinquency among Moroccan, Dutch and adolescents from other ethnic minorities. Delinquency was measured by an important precursor of this behaviour: psychopathic traits. The data are based on 476 adolescents in the age of 12 to 17. The participants filled in multiple digital questionnaires at school to measure ethnicity, psychopathic traits and self-esteem. Results from moderation analysis indicated that there was no moderation effect for socio-economic status and ethnicity on psychopathic traits. However, a second moderation analysis showed that low self-esteem explained 9% of the variance in psychopathic traits among Moroccan youth whereas it explained 0% of the variance in psychopathic traits among Dutch and other ethnic minority youth. Concluding, low self-esteem, and therefore social defeat, is expected to influence delinquent behaviour among Moroccan youth. This result can be viewed as consistent with the fact that delinquent Moroccan youth feel more connected to the Dutch society than Moroccan youth in the regular population. The Moroccan youth who feel more ‘Dutch’ possibly experience more frustrations concerning their position in the society. The gap between wanted goals and achieved goals in the host society can lead to feelings of social defeat and delinquent behaviour. ▼ Mobile Money transfer is the transferring of money from one person to another through the use of mobile phone. It is a service that is facilitated by a mobile network operator and seeks to ensure a convenient and efficient way in which customers can send and receive money from a network agent acting as a banking agent. In Kenya, we have various Mobile Network operators that have launched the use of MMT. The mobile money transfer service has tremendous grown in the last 3 years with the help of small and medium entrepreneurs who have taken up the business as banking agents and act as intermediaries between MNO’s and the customer. The study aimed to investigate the sustainability and viability of the mobile money transfer service in the industry by so doing analyze the providers of the mobile money transfer service uptake of the service as a business venture and how its impacts on their socio economic status as they ensure the provision of the mobile money transfer service penetrates to the customers who are the determinants of the longevity of any product or service that is introduced the latter will review the impact of the mobile money transfer service in relation to the security and risk that the service has to offer to the business owners in terms of investment, reputation, growth and their socio economic status. The various scholars have discussed its entry into the Kenyan and African market, how it has been embraced with reference of various roles played by the operator, regulator and the providers of the service. My study has greatly highlighted the correlation between the variables of customer loyalty, investment cost; customer service and location have influenced the socio economic status of the service providers who carry out the service in relation to income and revenue growth. The conclusion is that the MMT service is still a new field that has great exploration potential within which one can study and that it has immensely improved the livelihoods of the service providers in Nairobi, more study is to be carried out in different parts of the country.

Увод: Гојазност представља водећи јавно-здравствени проблем како у развијеним тако и у земљама у развоју, а њена преваленција је у сталном порасту. Циљ ове дисертације био је да се утврди учесталост различитих категорија ухрањености код одраслог становништва Србије, упореди процена прекомерне ухрањености и гојазности коришћењем различитих антропометријских показатеља, испита повезаност између социјално–економских карактеристика и здравственог понашања са стањем ухрањености, као и да ли постоји промена стања ухрањености у периоду 2000-2013 година у целини и у односу на типове здравственог понашања. Метод: У овој студији коришћени су подаци из три национална истрaживања здравља становништва Србије, спроведених 2000., 2006. и 2013. године по типу студија пресека на репрезентативном узорку одраслих особа узраста 20 и више година. Као инструмент испитивања коришћени су упитници. Резултати: Према вредности индекса телесне масе 2,4% одраслих особа у Србији је потхрањено, 38,7% нормално ухрањено, 36,4% прекомерно ухрањено, а 22,4% гојазно. Постоје значајне разлике у процени стања ухрањености коришћењем различитих антропометријских показатеља, као и у њиховим преваленцијама у односу на све испитиване социјално–економске варијабле са изузетком географске области. Код оба пола ризик гојазности је већи код бивших пушача, особа које прескачу доручак и које имају низак ниво физичке активности. Током посматраног периода истраживања уочава се значајно повећање индекса телесне масе и преваленције прекомерне ухрањености и гојазности. Закључак: Пушење дувана, употреба алкохола, прескакање доручка, досољавање хране за столом и учесталост уноса воћа и поврћа били су повезани са стањем ухрањености одрасле популације у Србији. Промена вредности индекса телесне масе је значајна у периоду 2000-2013. годинe.

▼ Infants??? gestures feature prominently in early language. The observation that accomplishments in gesture presage verbal milestones prompted the question of whether encouraging infants to gesture would bring on language gains. This thesis addressed this question, remedying many of the shortfalls of previous research. In a yearlong longitudinal study, high-SES mother-infant dyads (n = 40) were randomly allocated to one of four conditions: Symbolic Gesture training, British Sign Language (BSL) training, Verbal training and a Non-Intervention Control group. Infants??? language was continually assessed between the ages of 8 to 20 months to determine the impact of encouraged gesture on language development. With the exception of a small number of boys, encouraging gesture did not affect infants??? language development. However, the expressive language of boys who started the study with a low language ability was improved by gesture. A gesture-training intervention was delivered to low-SES mothers at a Sure Start children???s centre. Infants of mothers trained to gesture showed greater gains in their receptive and expressive vocabularies than infants of mothers who attended sessions aimed to improve general communication (without gesture instruction). Gesture helped reduce the discrepancy between the language abilities of infants from low and high-SES backgrounds. Qualitative investigations revealed how encouraging mothers to use gestures with their infants led to perceived wider, non-linguistic benefits. However, a comparison of maternal and infant stress scores revealed no difference between gesturing and non-gesturing mother-infant dyads. Infants, who because of biological and/or environmental factors have lower language abilities than their peers, stand to benefit from encouraged gesture in infancy. Through early intervention, gesture has the potential to reduce the disadvantage that children from lower-SES families face from impoverished language abilities. By changing the course of their early development, encouraged gesture could ultimately bring about lasting benefits.

▼ Background Multimorbidity, the co-existence of multiple health conditions in an individual, is a significant Public Health challenge. However, it has no consensus definition or measure, and its determinants and outcomes are not fully understood. Resilience may be a mechanism by which the experience of multimorbidity can be improved but there has been little study of this. Aim To define and measure the prevalence of multimorbidity and resilience to multimorbidity, to assess the role of mental health and childhood socio-economic status (SES) and to investigate the long-term outcomes. Objectives 1. To determine how multimorbidity and resilience to multimorbidity should be defined and measured in Public Health research 2. To assess the prevalence of multimorbidity and resilience to multimorbidity using the measures identified in objective one 3. To assess the role of mental health conditions and childhood SES in the occurrence of multimorbidity and resilience to multimorbidity 4. To assess the impact of multimorbidity and resilience to multimorbidity on long-term outcomes Method Systematic reviews of the literature were conducted to address objective one. The analysis of two contrasting study populations was used to address objectives two to four. These were the Australian cross-sectional Diamond study and the Aberdeen Children of the 1950s cohort study. Results Multimorbidity was defined as the presence of two or more conditions and was measured by patient self-report and healthcare administrative data. Resilience was the presence of good self-reported outcomes despite multimorbidity. Multimorbidity prevalence ranged from 3% to 38%. Mental health conditions led to an increased burden of multimorbidity and a reduced prevalence of resilience. Childhood SES and other SES factors were associated with multimorbidity. Childhood SES and other SES factors were associated with multimorbidity. Multimorbidity was associated with poorer outcomes. Conclusion The findings in this thesis can be used to improve consensus approaches to studying multimorbidity and resilience, and to develop interventions to tackle these.

▼ Urbanisation has increased tremendously over the last 60 years so that more than 50 per cent of the world population now live in cities. This is especially true for in developed countries, but it is expected that developing countries will take the lead in future urban population growth. This increasing trend of urbanisation has severe consequences for the environment, as it fragments and changes natural areas and alter environmental conditions. This has compelled scientists from many different disciplines to focus on the inclusion of humans into ecology as a driving force of change to create a better understanding of urban ecosystems. The diversity of fauna and flora in the urban environment provides a myriad of ecosystem goods (such as food and fuel) and services (e.g. cleaning the air and reducing noise levels). Apart from these tangible benefits, urban green space also provides recreational, educational and social benefits to urban inhabitants. A surprisingly substantial proportion (21‒36 %) of the total urban green space that produces these ecosystem goods and services is located in private yards. This portrays the importance of the flora of this land-use type, but very little is known about garden flora and its potential for conservation. The determinants of diversity and species richness in gardens were found to be different than for semi-natural ecosystems, because of the high anthropogenic influence. One of these is the socio-economic status of the inhabitants. People with higher socio-economic status were found to harbour more diverse species assemblages in their gardens than those of lower socio-economic status. This phenomenon was termed the “luxury concept”. In the Tlokwe City Municipality (TCM), the legacy effects of apartheid created a steep socio-economic gradient as a result of the inequitable distribution of economic, natural and social resources. The aims of this study were to gain information on the flora that is present in the domestic gardens of the TCM and to determine if socio-economic status (SES), a management index (MI) and demographic factors influences the distribution of plant species between these gardens. A total of 835 plant species were recorded from 100 domestic gardens and the majority were of alien origin. This large number of species included some Red Data species, invasive alien species and also many utilitarian species. This portrays gardens as important ex situ conservation habitats, but simultaneously it could also threaten the integrity of our natural ecosystems through the distribution of alien invasive species. The gamma, alpha and beta diversity were determined across five SES classes to describe the patterns of domestic garden plant species diversity in the TCM. In accordance with other studies, correlations showed that the SES of the inhabitants affected the plant species distribution in the study area. ▼ Parents are considered to be important and indispensable stakeholders in education. Research shows that parental involvement in the education of their children is a crucial matter as it contributes directly to the learners’ academic achievement. This study intended to investigate the possible effects of parents’ literacy levels on their involvement in the education and the academic achievement of their children. Approached from a constructivist point of view, the study specifically focused on schools situated in the rural areas of the Qwa Qwa region. The rationale for choosing the particular geographical focus was that it is frequently argued that learners educated in rural environments often find themselves in disadvantaged situations since their parents are financially poor, that they lack proper formal education and thus have low literacy levels, and that they are seldom involved in their children’s education and academic achievement. In order to direct the study towards the intended purpose, a literature study was undertaken to explore the phenomena of literacy and parental involvement. Literacy, its occurrence in the South African context and how parents’ literacy levels relate to learner performance were examined. In addition, parental involvement was investigated by considering the parents’ role as primary educators and by highlighting the importance of parental involvement in terms of its benefits towards children’s education and academic performance. By means of a qualitative case study, individual and focus group interviews were conducted with purposeful selected Head of Departments (HODs), parents and learners from four conveniently selected intermediate schools in the Thabo Mofutsanyana District of the Qwa Qwa region. In total four HODs, 14 parent couples and 14 Grade 6 learners participated in the research. The results of this research show that the parents’ literacy levels indeed affect their involvement in their children’s education and academic achievement. Parents with low literacy levels appear that they want to be involved but that they find it difficult. Most parents with low literacy levels are not able to assist their children with schoolwork but depend on others, such as older siblings to assist. Furthermore the research reveals that parents do not often visit schools voluntarily but that they rather do so by invitation. However, relations between schools and parents appear to be healthy and the attitudes of parents towards their children’s education are positive. Although parents with low literacy levels cannot always assist their children with their schoolwork, they motivate and value the education of their children since they realize that education remains the vehicle for social-economic development in any society.

▼ Globally urbanization has increased to such an extent that more than half of the human population currently resides in cities. In the years to come, urban expansion will especially take place in developing countries through efforts to improve economic growth and poverty alleviation. This may have a negative effect on native biodiversity within and surrounding urban environments. However, residential areas with a high proportion of gardens form a significantly large part of urban environments and these domestic gardens contribute to the maintenance and preservation of biodiversity in cities. Although the preservation of biodiversity in these gardens is important in the overall conservation of urban green spaces, little is known about how these gardens can possibly contribute to conservation purposes in urban areas. Bearing in mind that anthropogenic activities are possible drivers of urban biodiversity, it is vital to quantify socio-economic aspects within urban ecological research. In developing countries, such as South Africa, the inclusion of socio-economic aspects are especially important because there is a wider gap between poor and wealthy households. There are also a larger number of people that are dependent on their gardens for subsistence purposes, such as vegetable gardening. In the Municipal Area of Tlokwe, South Africa, there exists a definite socio-economic gradient from the poorer western to the more affluent eastern part of the city. Five socio-economic status (SES) classes, primarily based on % unemployment, were used in this study. The ultimate aim of this study was therefore to determine the plant- and arthropod diversity within urban domestic gardens along a socio-economic gradient. Vegetable gardens within domestic gardens were selected to quantify plant- and arthropod biodiversity. Biodiversity of adjacent lawns were also sampled for comparative purposes. The study also attempted to determine to what extent socio-economic aspects of city residents may be possible drivers of biodiversity within the gardens. Various other factors that might have an effect on the plant and/or arthropod diversity were included such as soil characteristics, specific management factors of the gardens and other land-uses surrounding domestic gardens. Arthropod diversity was surveyd by means of pitfall traps and suction sampling in eight 0.25 m2 squares along an 8 m transect in each representative garden. Arthropods were identified up to morphospecies level. Vegetation was surveyed along the same transect and total species composition was determined. Plants were identified up to species level. The plant and arthropod surveys were conducted in both the vegetable gardens and lawns of all SES classes. For the soil samples a 1:2.5 water analysis was conducted. A social survey was conducted in all representative gardens by means of a questionnaire and a SPOT 5 satellite imagery was used to determine the land-use types in the areas surrounding the participating gardens. ▼ Background Literature supports a relationship between low income status and poor diabetes control. However this relationship has not been assessed in Botswana. Aim To determine the relationship between socio-economic status and diabetes control in patients presenting to PMH. Objectives To measure the degree of glycaemic control; to determine the relationship between glycaemic control and monthly income as well as between glycaemic control and lifestyle modification factors;to describe the relationship between glycaemic control and core social welfare indicators. Methods A cross-sectional study, conducted over a 3 months in Gaborone, The questionnaire assessed self-care activities, monthly household earnings and core social welfare indicators among diabetes patients attending PMH. A total of 240 patients were randomly selected to complete the questionnaire. Routine HbA1c values were studied alongside questionnaire responses. Results A total of 58 (24%) participants with HbA1c between 4.0%-7.0% were well controlled, 96 (40%) of participants were poorly controlled (7.1%-9.0%) and 86 (36%) in the very poorly controlled category with HbA1c >9.0%. Of the well-controlled category, 59% lived on a monthly income between P0- P5000(the lowest income bracket). Only 3% participants in this category earned above P20000 monthly (the highest income bracket). Of the 40% poorly controlled participants, 69% fell in the lowest income bracket. No participants in this poorly controlled category earned above P20000 monthly. There were 40% participants in the very poorly controlled category. Of these, 63% earned between P0 - P5000. Only 2 participants with HbA1c values of 9.1 earned above P20000. Conclusion In this study high HbA1c percentages were associated with low monthly income levels and low scores in lifestyle modification factors. Participants with poor access to core welfare indicators also had poor glycaemic control. This study suggests that poor socio-economic status is directly related to poor glycaemic control in patients attending PMH diabetes clinic.
