Bien avant que les surréalistes n’érigent Lautréamont en précurseur de la modernité poétique, Les Chants de Maldoror (1869) et les Poésies (1870) ont eu leur place dans les débats des écrivains de la fin du XIXe siècle sur la décadence et le symbolisme. La réception de Lautréamont ne va pourtant pas de soi : son oeuvre d’Isidore Ducasse ne s’accorde guère avec les aspirations de l’époque ; et le manque crucial d’informations sur cet auteur laisse un vide que ses premiers lecteurs se sont efforcés de combler par l’élaboration d’un récit mythique. À travers l’étude d’un demi-siècle de lectures, fait de récupérations idéologiques, de querelles véhémentes et de fantasmes autour de la figure de l’écrivain maudit, cette thèse tente de reconstituer les réseaux de sociabilité littéraire de 1868 à 1917 en utilisant des outils d’analyse empruntés à la sociologie ; elle aspire en effet à montrer comment, grâce aux petites revues et aux cénacles, un mythe littéraire s’est élaboré au tournant du siècle.

Long before Surrealists seized upon Lautréamont in the name of poetic modernity, Les Chants de Maldoror (1869) and Poésies (1870) had been read by a whole literary generation which broached upon them in discussions about decadence and symbolism. But that reception is not obvious : Isidore Ducasse’s work is not a perfect reflection of the era’s aspirations, and the lack of information about its author generates a void to be filled only by a mythic story. It is necessary to parse this half-century of readings, full of ideological hijacks, fantasies about a supposed poète maudit as well as of literary disputes in which what is at stake is the discovery of a new Rimbaud. With the help of analytic tools borrowed from network sociology, our aim is to declineate the literary landscape in the years 1868 to 1917 in order to show how a literary myth took shape, through small journals and circles, at the turn of a century.

Det är många faktorer som påverkar stadsutvecklingen och som skapar stadens identitet. Medverkande krafter är de offentliga och privata aktörernas intressen, den nationella bostadspolitiken, den befintliga fysiska strukturen samt stadens historiska bakgrund. I en tid då globalisering och kulturella förhållanden skapar en konkurrens mellan städerna kan stadens identitet och ekonomisk utveckling ses som viktiga faktorer i strävan efter att göra staden attraktiv. Avregleringen av bostadsmarknaden har bidragit till att privata aktörer får allt större inflytande över stadsutvecklingen. Olika grupper som till exempel företagarföreningar satsar på stadskärnans förnyelse. Centrumförnyelse och tilltalande bostäder i centrala lägen är aktuella projekt med inriktning på att göra staden tilltalande. Handel, nöjen, kultur, och attraktivt boende är viktiga för staden i kampen om företag, befolkning, turister och andra besökare. I de medelstora och stora städerna finns en form av stadsstruktur som vi här kallar mellanstad. Med mellanstaden menar vi de områden som är belägna mellan den täta stadskärnan och landsbygden. I mellanstaden finns många typer av bebyggelse. Småskalig äldre bebyggelse ?samsas? med storskalig miljonprogramsbebyggelse, villamattor, arbetsplatsområden, bilvårdsanläggningar, externhandel, trafikleder, tomma ytor med mera. Trenden när det gäller attraktivt boende går mot två håll. Det ena är att man väljer att bosätta sig i stadskärnan och det andra är att man väljer ett boende utanför staden, gärna i ?sjönära? läge. De mindre tätorterna kan i många fall erbjuda mycket goda boendemiljöer. Att bo utanför staden har blivit en möjlighet i vårt moderna IT-samhälle. I staden har de olika bostadsområdena fått olika attraktionskraft. Det finns stadsdelar med långa bostadsköer samtidigt som andra områden har tomma lägenheter. En stor del av stadens befolkning bor i mellanstadens bostadsområden. En del av dessa områden besväras av dåligt rykte. Den publicitet dessa får är oftast i negativ form. Den uppmärksamhet, som riktar sig mot staden, berör främst staden centrala delar. Därför vill vi sätta fokus på mellanstaden. Mellanstaden har många resurser, kvaliteter och möjligheter samtidigt som det finns brister och problem. Till resurserna hör närheten till naturen, låga markkostnader och att det ofta finns markreserver. Till nackdelarna och svagheterna hör bilberoende, segregation, storskalighet och minskad närservice. Otrygghet och dålig tillgänglighet kan även höra till mellanstadens problem. Trivsel och livskvalitet i vardagsmiljön är viktig för hela stadens utveckling. En god miljö kan stärka ortens konkurrenskraft och bidra till en positiv stadsutveckling. Vid framtida lokaliseringar av nya arbetstillfällen inom ?high-tech? ses livskvalitet i vardagsmiljön som en viktig utvecklingsfaktor. Även servicenäringarna anses vara beroende av god stadsmiljö. The New Zealand landmass encompasses a vast diversity of wilderness areas, including fourteen national parks and other conservation lands. These natural environments attract a large number of domestic and international visitors, who consult a many different sources of on-line and printed information before and during their visit. However, these resources are usually designed to suit a generic visitor, and take no account of the different needs and expectation of diverse individuals. In this thesis, I investigate the use of information resources by different users groups as categorized by the Wilderness Perception Scaling (WPS) method. I begin with a review of relevant studies and statistics relating to domestic and international visitors’ experiences of the New Zealand wilderness. I then report on the results of my direct observations of visitors to three destinations, and I discuss the findings that I gathered from surveys that I conducted in two of these locations. This work includes pilot studies of two sites — the Catlins Conservation Park and the Orokonui Ecosanctuary — and a more detailed study of Arthur’s Pass National Park. Following a discussion of my observations and findings, I argue for a redesign of the Department of Conservation (DOC) Website, and I present sketch ideas for a new site that is informed by mobile media interface designs. This work hints at future possibilities for smartphone applications. I conclude that current technologies allow us to address the needs and expectations of different visitors to wilderness areas. Furthermore, I argue that mobile media can enable individuals to create and share, as well as download and use, information resources that address their various and different requirements. I conclude that, if we want younger people to engage with wilderness environments, we should be using the technologies that they are using. Advisors/Committee Members: McGuire, Mark (advisor).
