自律型水中ロボットは近い将来、深海での活動、海洋開発や調査を行う方法のひとつとして期待されている。しかしながらそれらを実現するためには姿勢制御、センサ情報の取得、行動決定、衝突回避行動、自己位置同定等さまざまな解決すべき課題がある。実用的な水中ロボットを目指すには、常に変化する環境中でロボット自身の状態を判断し、最適な行動をとる必要がある。ところが自律型水中ロボットは、自律的にそれらの環境に適応する。我々は、環境に適応できるコントローラ、ナビゲーション、そして水中マニピュレータシステムの研究を行っている。近年、自律型水中ロボットによる海洋調査の報告がなされている。例えば、自律型水中ロボットr2D4は水深2000[m]明神礁の海底火山の観測を行い、自律型水中ロボットAqua Explorerは、鯨の追跡を行い生態調査に役立っている。しかしながらそれらのロボットシステムは、支援母船を含めると大規模であり、数人の研究者で簡易に運用できるものではない。そこで我々は、小規模な水中ロボットシステム“AquaBox”の研究を行っている。本稿では、小規模水中ロボットシステム“AquaBox”について述べる。
