▼ Cílem této bakalářské práce je studium fyzikálních a chemických vlastností metamastku. Jedná se o delaminovanou a dehydroxylovanou mastkovou surovinu, která byla teprve nedávno připravena a popsána na FCH VUT v Brně ve spolupráci s CMV (Centrum materiálového výzkumu). K nalezení vhodného využití tohoto mladého materiálu směřuje i tato bakalářská práce. Testovanými vlastnostmi jsou velikost částic, měrný povrch, objemová hmotnost, sorpční kapacita a kationtová výměnná kapacita.; The aim of this bachelor thesis is study of physical and chemical properties of metatalk. Metatalc is delaminated and dehydroxylated form of talc which was earlier prepared and described on FCH BUT in cooperation with MRC (Material Research Center). This thesis is part of the way to find suiting use for this newly found material and it takes on proposing forms of use. Tested attributes are particle size, particle surface, volumetric mass, sorption and cation exchange capacity.

▼ Die vorliegende Arbeit befasst sich mit der Untersuchung der Kratzempfindlichkeit von Glaskeramiken. Kratzer auf Glaskeramikoberflächen können sowohl festigkeitsmindernd wirken, wenn mediane Risse direkt unterhalb der Kratzerspur in die Mitte des Materials führen, als auch zu einer optischen Beeinträchtigung beitragen, wenn laterale Risse parallel zur Oberfläche wachsen und die Kratzerflanken ausmuscheln. In dieser Arbeit wird der Fokus auf die optische Beeinträchtigung gelegt.
Im Vordergrund steht daher der Einfluss der wachsenden Kristallphasenanteile während der Keramisierung und der damit einhergehenden Änderung der Material-, mechanischen Eigenschaften sowie der Eigenspannung in der Glaskeramik. Es wird gezeigt, inwiefern der Verlauf lateraler Risse durch das Gefüge der Glaskeramik beeinflusst bzw. kontrolliert werden kann.
Untersucht wurden Glaskeramiken des Systems MgO-Al2O3-SiO2 (MAS) in denen eine große Bandbreite von verschiedenen Kristallphasen wie Spinell, Sapphirin, Indialith, Mullit und Kristallphasenanteilen ausgeschieden werden können, die zu chemisch unterschiedlichen Restglasmatrices führen. Als Vergleichssystem wurde eine Glaskeramik herangezogen, die polymorph Lithiumdisilikat kristallisiert.
Kratzer wurden mittels eines Knoop-Diamanten erzeugt und bezüglich der Last variiert. Die Materialanalyse erfolgte durch röntgenographische und kalorimetrische sowie elektromikroskopische Methoden. Relevante mikromechanische Eigenschaften wurden durch Vickersindentation, Ultraschallmessungen und 4-PunktBiegeversuche bestimmt, während die Kratzempfindlichkeit mittels der lastabhängigen Ausmuschelungswahrscheinlichkeit und der Breite der Kratzer nach dem Abbrechen der Flanken parametrisiert wurde.
Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass der Einfluss der Keramisierungsbedingungen auf die Kratzempfindlichkeit komplex ist und von der Kristallart, dem -anteil und der damit einhergehenden Verspannung zwischen Kristall und Glasmatrix abhängt. Die Propagation lateraler Risse zur Oberfläche erfolgt stets in der Glasphase. Sie wird durch die Gefügeentwicklung beeinflusst, die vor der Rissspitze und an den Rissflanken wirkt und zu Rissaufspaltung, -überbrückung und ablenkung führt. Zudem wird das unterkritische Risswachstum in Folge hohe Umgebungsfeuchte beschleunigt.
Vor diesem Hintergrund sind Gefüge vorteilhaft, die durch die Keramisierung so eingestellt werden, dass die Kristalle sich berühren, d.h. das Restglas die diskontinuierliche Phase des glaskeramischen Gefüges darstellt.
The present work deals with the investigation of the scratch sensitivity of glass-ceramics. Scratches on glass-ceramic surfaces can both reduce strength if median cracks lead directly below the scratch track into the center of the material, as well as contribute to a visual impairment when lateral cracks grow parallel to the surface and the scratch flanks radiate out. SiO2-
MgO materials excellent catalysts for the ethanol-to-butadiene Lebedev process. In particular, the preparation technique of choice affects the structural properties of the resulting
SiO2-
MgO materials considerably and therefore the distribution, i.e. nature and amount, of acidic-basic sites. Given the complex cascade of elementary steps required, striking a precise balance in the latter is key to obtaining a high butadiene yield and performance in general. Moreover, the adsorption of atmospheric CO2 on the active sites of these solid materials can also affect their acid-base properties, forming a number of carbonate species whose nature and thermal stability depend on the preparation method used for the
SiO2-
MgO samples.
During the wet-kneading preparation method used for the
SiO2-
MgO materials significant chemical changes occur in the primary components. Moreover, a number of preparation parameters (e.g., size of
SiO2 and
MgO and relative amounts of those) affect the extent of those structural changes. Indeed, the different parameters employed for catalyst preparation affect the amount of
MgO and magnesium silicates in the resulting materials. The formation of such magnesium silicates has been previously reported, but their function in catalysis is still unclear. In this PhD work, the magnesium silicates are proposed to improve butadiene yield by facilitating the aldol condensation step.
It is well known that dehydrogenation promoters enhance the performance of
SiO2-
MgO catalyst materials for the ethanol-to-butadiene conversion. In this PhD work, Cu-promoted
SiO2-
MgO catalysts gave superior butadiene yield. Structurally such systems are very complex due to the presence of three distinct metal oxides and, additionally, of compounds resulting from the interaction of those. Nevertheless, the characterization techniques used showed that a large portion of copper present replaces magnesium in the crystal lattice sites of
MgO; the solid solution formed between CuO and
MgO then affects positively the performance of resulting materials by reducing the number of acidic/strong basic sites which favor ethanol dehydration, while slightly increasing basic sites of moderate strength. In addition to CuxMg1-xO solid solution, other Cu species are also present, albeit in lower amounts, and thought to influence catalysis. Specifically, CuO sub-nanometric clusters are, in this investigation, proposed to facilitate aldol condensation. Relatedly, catalyst materials that do not contain such species due to the preparation conditions employed (as a result of the preparation method chosen for
SiO2-
MgO materials or due to the order of addition of copper on the latter) give lower butadiene yield. This shows that the preparation of
SiO2-

▼ SiO2 solutions were prepared from tetraethylortho-silicate (TEOS) by using the sol-gel process to fabricate dielectric materials of the insulator.
We weighed different weight of TEOS in the solution and looked for the suitable conditions which easily fabricate the thin film.
Then, we tried to add organic dispersants ( Octyl Phenol Ethoxylate ) in the
SiO2 solution for the purpose of making molecules dispersed in the solution uniformly. After being a membrane, it could improve the roughness to make it more smooth. We used AFM to measure the root-mean square (RMS). The purpose of measurement was less than 1nm. Then we used these materials to make metal-insulator-metal (MIM) structures. And the measurement showed the leakage current was 10 times less than that without adding it in the solution.
After that, we applied the thin film to the insulator of the thin film transistor (TFT). Pentacene of the semiconductor layer was thermally deposited and the thickness was about 50nm. Because the interface between the insulator and the semiconductor could change the arrangement of Pentacene, so we used O2 plasma to improve the interface. The process could make the molecules arrange regularly and influence the carrier mobility, and that can let us get the characteristic of the TFT.

MgO (Magnesium oxide) thin films start diffusing to the sapphire substrate at 473K. We investigate diffusion relation between the
MgO and TiO2 superlattice structure and expect to find the best growing temperature and time for heteroepitaxy. By growing at different orientation Sapphire and sputtering power, we found the best growing condition for the single layer. We choose the XRR (X-ray reflectivity) signals as the mean tool to investigate the thickness, density, and roughness of the superlattice films. Comparing to other tools, such as TEM (Transmission electron microscopy), SEM(Scanning electron microscope) or AFM (Atomic force microscopy), that is much bigger scan region, better average signal receives and its resolution is coming to angstrom level. On the other hand, XRR technical was applied to metal superlattice and analysis science 1980, which had will define theory and fitting data. It is well-developed skill and suitable technic to apply to oxide superlattice. From the XRR data analysis, we found out annealing at 873K for 6hrs and 2hrs make
MgO/TiO2 structure mixed all. Besides annealing at 673K for 6hrs and 2hrs changing the interface structure.

▼ This thesis investigates the epitaxial growth and structural characterizations of Cu2O/
MgO superlattices, which consist of alternating layers of cuprous oxide and magnesium oxide epitaxial thin films. The superlattices were grown on c-oriented sapphire (Al2O3) substrates by sputtering at various temperatures under an optimized gas pressure of Ar:O2 mixtures. The intended layer-by-layer growth of superlattices of planar interfaces were not successful when grown at high temperature as the Cu2O films tended to grow in island forms. To entice the so-call layer-by-layer growth that supposedly would lead to planar surface or interfaces, the growth temperatures were dramatically decreased, albeit possibly at the sacrifice of some degree of crystalline perfection only achievable at high temperatures. Without losing the epitaxial nature of the superalttices, however, the adopted range of temperatures of the thin film deposition were somehow able to reduce the mobility of the deposited atoms, as represented by the suppressed island formation and realized smoother interfaces. In this work, high-resolution analytical x-ray diffractometry (XRD), such as 2theta-omega, or grazing angle (GIXRD) scans, and grazing angle X-ray reflectivity (XRR) measurements, were employed to characterize the epitaxial and interfacial nature of the superlattices, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to observe the surface morphology, while transmission electron microscopy (TEM) operated in high resolution mode, coupled with the electron diffraction pattern formation, was used to achieve atomic imaging and micro- and nanostructures characterizations of the samples. The effects of an initial
MgO layer that was grown at high temperature and the overall dependence of the growth temperature are discussed based on the correlated findings.

10-20 nm currently attract attention as theyhave distinctive
properties such as a large magnetic moment and behave like
giantparamagnetic atoms with a fast response to applied magnetic
fields with negligibleremanence and coercivity. In addition, they
have a single magnetic domain and showsuperparamagnetic behaviour
with blocking temperature. These characteristics
makesuperparamagnetic nanoparticles possess significant
applications in biomedical fields.However, nanoparticles need to be
protected to be stable and avoid the loss of theirmagnetism. This
can be accomplished by coating nanoparticles with organic species
or withan inorganic layer, such as silica. The protecting shells
not only stabilise the nanoparticles,but can also be used for
further functions. This work presents experimental results on
thepreparation of fine Ni/NiO nanoparticles via a reduction method.
The nanoparticles wereprepared by reducing nickel-acetate with
1-propanol in the presence of Pd seeds andpolyvinylpyrrolidone
(PVP) as a stabiliser. The nanoparticles were further coated with
silica(
SiO2) by hydrolysis of tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) in
2-propanol, both with and without aprimer (gelatine). The effect of
reaction conditions on coating was studied. The nature
andcharacteristics of the Ni nanoparticles and Ni/
SiO2 were studied
by a number of techniquessuch as Scanning Electron Microscopy
(SEM), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Transmissionelectron microscopy
(TEM), energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and
FourierTransform-Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). The magnetic
measurements of Ni nanoparticleswas performed by using
superconducting quantum interference device
(SQUID)magnetometer.Finally, an overview of the project is
presented and techniques that have been used tocharacterise
nanoparticles. The experimental is outlined in chapter
4.

▼ In this study we used a different route, simple and economical: the dissolution of the SiO2 powder DGEBA with a hardener to base polymercaptan ( aradur 90 ). Analysis was performed micro hardness in different percentages of the concentration of SiO2. The hardness of multicomponent solid is approximately equal to the average hardness of the material composition and is also related to the fraction of crystalline phase present in these materials. Since the hardness of the material a decisive factor for its implementation, it is interesting to see how this property varies depending on the composition of multicomponent solid. Was used to DGEBA Araldite GY 279 and hardener aradur 90 provided by Huntsman. We prepared several samples with different concentrations of SiO2 (3%, 5%, 10%, 20%, 30%, 40% and 50%) compared to the total mass of Araldite-Aradur Mixtures spent 24 hours at ambient temperature and then became a cure at 100 C, 120 C, 140 C, 160 C and 180 C for 4 h in an oven at ambient pressure. For the determination of hardness, we used a Shimadzu micro hardness tester equipped with an indenter Vickers. Several tests were performed and it was observed that the micro hardness was a sharp increase with increasing temperature and the concentration of SiO2. This behavior is associated mainly to the oxidation of the surface and also due to the higher concentration of SiO2, forming a kind of composite with a thermosetting characteristics of high rigidity. There was a significant growth type reaching a 500 % increase in Vickers hardness between the sample with 50 % SiO2 and pure to a cure of 180 C. Were also carried out measurements of elastic modulus and pure sample was obtained a score of 1.65 x107 Pa for the sample with 50 % had a value of 8x107 Pa. The growth of the elastic modulus accompanied the growth of the hardness, around 480 %. The presence of SiO2 in the epoxy resin causes a change in the mechanical properties of DGEBA and a concentration of 50% at 180 C for a cure for 4 h, a significant increase of the same. It was also observed at high homogeneity powder of silicon oxide to Araldite and Aradur These results indicate that the composite DGEBA/SiO2 can be a good candidate to be used in covering of metals, for example, duct that demand a good hardness.

Foi feita análise de microdureza nos diferentes percentuais da concentração de SiO2. A dureza em sólidos multicomponentes é aproximadamente igual à média aritmética das durezas dos materiais constituintes e está ainda relacionada com a fração da fase cristalina presentes nestes materiais. Sendo a dureza do material um fator decisivo para a aplicação do mesmo, torna-se interessante verificar como esta propriedade varia em função da composição em sólidos multicomponentes. Foi utilizado a DGEBA Araldite GY 279 e o endurecedor Aradur 90 fornecido pela Huntsman. Foram preparadas diversas amostras com concentrações diferentes de SiO2 (3 %, 5 %, 10 %, 20 %, 30 %, 40 % e 50 % ) em relação a massa total de Araldite-Aradur. As misturas passaram 24 h à temperatura ambiente e depois fez-se uma cura a 100 C, 120 C, 140 C, 160 C e 180 C, durante 4 h em uma estufa em pressão ambiente. Para a determinação da microdureza, utilizou-se um microdurômetro da Shimadzu equipado com um identador Vickers. Diversas análises foram realizadas e foi observado que a microdureza teve um crescimento acentuado em função do aumento da temperatura e da concentração de SiO2. Este comportamento está associado, principalmente, à oxidação da superfície e também devido à maior concentração de SiO2, formando uma espécie de compósito com características de um termofixo de alta rigidez. Encontrou-se um crescimento tipo significante chegando a um aumento de 500% na dureza Vickers entre a amostra com 50% de SiO2 e a pura a uma cura de 180 C. Foram realizadas também medidas do módulo elástico e para amostra pura obteve-se um resultado de 1,65x107 Pa e para a amostra com 50% apresentou um valor de 8x107 Pa. O crescimento do módulo de elasticidade acompanhou o crescimento da dureza, em torno de 480%. A presença do SiO2 na resina epóxi causa alteração nas propriedades mecânicas da DGEBA e que numa concentração de 50 % a 180 C, durante uma cura de 4 h, houve um aumento significante das mesmas. Foi observado também a alta homogeinidade do pó de óxido de silício com o Araldite e o Aradur. Estes resultados indicam que o compósito DGEBA/SiO2 pode ser um bom candidato para ser utilizado em revestimento de metais, por exemplo, dutos que exijam uma boa dureza.

▼ Este trabalho teve como objetivo a combinação de ânodos e eletrólitos otimizados, para a formação de células a combustível de etanol direto (DEFC), operantes em elevadas temperaturas (130 ºC). Como materiais de ânodo, foram produzidos eletrocatalisadores baseados em PtSn/C, com diversas razões atômicas Pt:Sn, preparados pelo método do poliol modificado, essa metodologia possibilita a produção de eletrocatalisadores auto-organizados com estreita distribuição de tamanhos de partículas e elevado grau de liga. Os eletrocatalisadores foram caracterizados por DRX e stripping de CO. Os resultados mostraram que esses materiais apresentaram elevado grau de liga e Eonset de oxidação de CO em potenciais menores do que os materiais comerciais. Como eletrólito, foram sintetizados híbridos Nafion-SiO2 com a incorporação do óxido diretamente nos agregados iônicos de diversos tipos de membranas Nafion. Os parâmetros de síntese, tais como o solvente em meio solgel, a espessura da membrana, e a concentração do precursor de sílica foram avaliados em termos do percentual de sílica incorporada e da estabilidade mecânica do híbrido. Por fim, ânodos e eletrólitos otimizados foram avaliados em DEFCs nas temperaturas de 80 e 130 ºC. Os resultados mostraram um significativo incremento no desempenho de polarização (122 mW cm-2), resultado da aceleração na taxa de oxidação de etanol devido ao material de ânodo otimizado e do aumento de temperatura de operação, uma vez que o uso de eletrólitos híbridos possibilita o aumento da temperatura sem perdas de condutividade. Nesse sentido, a combinação de eletrodos e eletrólitos otimizados é uma alternativa promissora para o desenvolvimento de tais dispositivos.
This work has as objective to evaluate anodes and electrolytes in direct ethanol fuel cells (DEFC) operating at high temperature (130 ºC). As anode materials, electrocatalysts based on PtSn/C were prepared by Modified Polyol Method with various Pt:Sn atomic ratios. Such methodology promotes selforganized electrocatalysts production with narrow particle size distribution and high alloying degree. The eletrocatalysts were characterized by XRD, and CO stripping. The results showed that these materials presented high alloying degree and Eonset CO oxidation at lower potential as commercial materials. As electrolyte, Nafion-SiO2 hybrids were synthesized by sol-gel reaction, by the incorporation of oxide directly into the ionic aggregates of various kinds of Nafion membranes. The synthesis parameter, such sol-gel solvent, membrane thickness and silicon precursor concentration were studied in terms of silica incorporation degree and hybrid mechanical stability. Finally, the optimized anodes and electrolytes were evaluated in DEFC operating at 80 130 ºC temperature range. The results showed a significant improvement of the DEFC performance (122 mW cm-2), resulted from the acceleration of ethanol oxidation reaction rate due to anode material optimization and high temperature operation once the use of hybrids possibilities the increase of temperature…

SiO2/SnO2,
SiO2/SnO2/Sb2O5 e o filme de Nb2O5 formado sobre a superfície do material cerâmico
SiO2/C e utilizá-los como matriz no desenvolvimento de sensores eletroquímicos. O óxido misto,
SiO2/SnO2, foi sintetizado utilizando como fonte de SnO2, SnCl4.5H2O, utilizando diferentes catalisadores ácidos HCl e HF (F-). As diferenças estruturais e morfológicas apresentadas pelos óxidos mistos,
SiO2/SnO2, em virtude do uso de diferentes catalisadores ácidos, foram investigadas por meio das isotermas de adsorção/dessorção de N2, espectroscopia de fluorescência de raios X, difração de raios X, espectroscopia na região do infravermelho, microscopia eletrônica de transmissão, espectroscopia fotoeletrônica de raios X (XPS), medidas de condutividade elétrica e medidas eletroquímicas visando a utilização destes óxidos mistos como matriz suporte para desenvolvimento de sensores eletroquímicos. O material,
SiO2/SnO2/Sb2O5, foi obtido por meio da incorporação do Sb2O5 sobre a superfície do óxido misto,
SiO2/SnO2, previamente sintetizado utilizando como fonte de SnO2, o dibutildiacetato de estanho. Este recobrimento foi realizado utilizando, CH2Cl2 seco, em atmosfera inerte, pela técnica de "Enxerto¿. O material,
SiO2/SnO2/Sb2O5, foi caracterizado por meio da isoterma de adsorção/dessorção de N2, espectroscopia de fluorescência de raios X, microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV), espectroscopia de energia dispersiva (EDS) e espectroscopia fotoeletrônica de raios X (XPS). Sobre este material foi imobilizado o corante catiônico, azul de meldola, no qual foi preparado um eletrodo de disco rígido com objetivo de estudar a eletrooxidação do cofator NADH utilizando as técnicas de voltametria cíclica e cronoamperometria visando o desenvolvimento de um biossensor eletroquímico. ▼ This thesis work focuses on understanding the fundamentals of the spintorque effect in
MgO-based high tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ) nanopillar geometry devices. In order to achieve this goal, I have successfully established a reliable and repeatable high TMR and low resistance-area (RA) product
MgO sputtering process at Cornell. Currently, we are capable of sputtering TMR (>100% with RA<10Ω/[MICRO SIGN]m2 ). In addition to speeding up the nanopillar two-terminal structure fabrication process, I have also worked on improving the nanopillar lift-off process, which has enabled me to finish the nanopillar fabrication process within a week. We have full control over high TMR
MgO MTJ materials, nanofabrication and spin-torque analysis schemes at Cornell. I have shown that the spin-torque effect in asymmetric
MgO-based MTJ could be significantly affected by the electronic structure in the electrodes or electrode/barrier interface in the MTJ ("asymmetric" MTJs indicate bottom and top electrodes materials are different ferromagnetic materials and "symmetric" MTJs have identical bottom and top electrode ferromagnetic materials.) Briefly, I have shown that the field-like torque in the asymmetric MTJs exhibit non-zero torkance at zero bias and would further reverse torkance asymmetric when the electrode was reversed from Fe40 Co40 B20 /
MgO/Fe80 B20 to Fe80 B20 /
MgO/Fe40 Co40 B20 . In addition, the field-like torque exhibits a constant and weak voltage dependence compared to symmetric Fe40 Co40 B20 /
MgO/Fe40 Co40 B20 MTJs. Symmetric Fe80 B20 /
MgO/Fe80 B20 MTJs exhibit opposite in-plane torkance compared to symmetric Fe40 Co40 B20 /
MgO/Fe40 Co40 B20 . I also further probe the differences in spin-transfer torque in high TMR
MgO-based MTJs, I have developed a pulse-biased microwave emission measurement to understand the spin-torque behavior under high current densities for real ultra-fast (<1ns) spin-torque-based magnetic switching devices. Here, I have observed that the microwave emissions are highly asymmetric under positive and negative voltage polarities. Within the bi-polar stable switching region, negative polarity (electrons flowing from fixed to free) induced strong microwave emission, but there is no microwave emission with positive voltage. This phenomena could be understood by a strong field-like torque effect affecting in-plane torque driven dynamics. Macromagnetic power phase diagram simulations capture the major features observed in the pulse-biased experiments. This result indicated that field-like torque could play a dominant role inducing unreliable switching even in the symmetric MTJ, plus the strong asymmetric in-plane torque with negative polarities could introduce chaotic dynamics and resulting in back-hopping switching.

Many groups have tried different ways to grow the cuprous oxide by, for instance, sputtering, CVD, PLD, MBE, and electro-deposition etc. Among them, the sputtering method is probably the most cost-effective and easy to operate.
In this work, the cuprous oxide thin films were grown on R-Al2O3 and (110)-
MgO substrates by DC reactive magnetron sputtering. Thin films grown at different temperatures under various oxygen partial pressures were studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD) to test their structural perfections. Samples with the Cu2O on Al2O3(1012) and
MgO(110) were studied via measurement of cathodoluminescence(CL) spectroscopy, photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy, transmission spectroscopy and magneto transport behaviors. The correlation of growth condition and physical properties are discussed.

▼ Magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs), which consist of a thin insulation layer sandwiched by two ferromagnetic (FM) layers, are among the key devices of spintronics that have promising technological applications for computer hard disk drives, magnetic random access memory (MRAM) and other future spintronic devices. The work presented here is related to the development of relevant techniques for the preparation and characterization of magnetic films, exchanged biased systems and MTJs. The fabrication and characterization of PtMn/CoFe exchange biased systems and MTJs with Al-O barriers were undertaken when the new Aviza StratIon fxP ion beam deposition tool was developed by the project consortium funded by DTI MNT. After the Nordiko 9550 spintronic deposition tool was installed at Plymouth, the work focused on the development of MTJ multilayer stacks with layer structures of CoFeB/MgO/CoFe/IrMn and IrMn/CoFeB/MgO/CoFeB to achieve coherent tunneling with a crystalline MgO barrier. The film deposition, microfabrication, magnetic field annealing, microstructural and nano-scale characterization, magnetic and magneto-transport measurement for these devices have been systematically studied to achieve smooth interfaces and desired crystallographic textures and magnetic properties of layer stacks. Magnetoresistance (MR) of up to 200% was obtained from MTJs with a layer structure of Ta/CuN/Ta/CoFeB/MgO/CoFe/IrMn/Ta and a CuN bottom electrode. Enhanced exchange anisotropy from the bottom pinned IrMn/CoFeB stacks has been obtained, which demonstrated the possibility of fabricating MTJs with CoFeB as both the top and bottom FM electrodes with strong exchange bias. The origin of the enhanced exchange bias field was studied by employing high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) to examine the mmicrostructure properties and element specific magnetic properties of the stacks. Results demonstrate that the enhanced exchange anisotropy in the IrMn/CoFeB system is closely associated with the increased uncompensated interfacial spins. MTJs with layered structures of IrMn/CoFeB/MgO/CoFeB were prepared based on this exchange bias system. However, further work is required for the optimisation of the (001) crystallographic textures of the CoFeB/MgO/CoFeB stack to achieve coherent tunneling.

▼ The growing stockpiles of plutonium and minor actinides have become a worldwide issue. Methods of actinide management include developing materials for nuclear waste forms and inert-matrix fuels (IMF) for actinide burning. The work described here has included thermal property assessment of potential IMF materials produced via a novel synthesis method, and radiation-damage studies of a range of ABO4 compounds with potential as nuclear waste forms.In the first study, a smaller particle size (submicron) and improved homogeneity of
MgO-Nd2Zr2O7 IMF mixtures were achieved via a novel aqueous solution method. Thermal diffusivity, heat capacity, thermal expansion and thermal conductivity measurements found that the smaller particles did not significantly reduce the resulting material’s thermal properties when compared to samples prepared by more traditional synthetic methods. Importantly, the homogeneity produced is a key factor that could significant effect the performance of the IMF at elevated temperature in reactor.Study 2 and study 3 were focused on the effects of Au ion-beam irradiation on the structural properties of ABO4 compounds. It was found that CaWO4 (scheelite) and YVO4 (zircon) both with tetragonal structures, displayed less damage than LaVO4 (fergusonite), LaNbO4 (fergusonite) and YNbO4 (monazite) with monoclinic structures. The results suggest that the radiation tolerance was better with higher atomic number in group II and CaWO4 showed evidence of a slow recovery from its damaged structure, even at room temperature. Further, thermal annealing experiments were undertaken to investigate recovery of the material from the damage.

▼ A metal-insulator-metal (MIM) device is used to
rectify high frequency radiation received through an antenna
coupled to it. In this study, a Ta-SiO2-Ta MIM device was
fabricated and characterized. SiO2 layers with different
thicknesses of 2nm, 5nm and 8nm were deposited and evaluated both
electrically and optically. Tantalum was deposited using a
sputtering system, while the oxide was evaporated using an E-beam
evaporator. A Keithley 4200-SCS system combined with a four-probe
station was adopted to measure both current-voltage and
capacitance-voltage (C-V) characteristics. The I-V curves for all
MIM devices were almost linear except the one with 8nm of SiO2
exhibited some nonlinearity. The C-V measurement that was carried
out at AC frequency showed changing resistance for all samples and
the resistance decreased as the thickness decreased. However, the
E-beam SiO2 was found not to be a desirable oxide for MIM
application due to the existence of many defects.

▼ This study measures the electron-induced luminescence (cathodoluminescence) for various samples of fused silica. With a band gap of ~8.9 eV, visible and near-IR (NIR) luminescence occurs only if there are states (localized defect or trap states) within the forbidden band gap for electrons to occupy. A model is presented based on the electronic band structure and defect density of states—used to explain electron transport in highly disordered insulating materials—which has been extended to describe the relative cathodoluminescent intensity and spectral bands as a function of incident beam energy and current density, sample temperatures, and emitted photon wavelength.
Tests were conducted on two types of disordered
SiO2 samples, the first type containing two variations: (i) thin (~60 nm) coatings on reflective metal substrates, and (ii) ~80 μm thick bulk samples. Luminescence was measured using a visible range SLR CCD still camera, a VIS/NIR image-intensified video camera, a NIR video camera, and a UV/VIS spectrometer. Sample temperature was varied from ~295 K to 40 K. The results of these tests were fit with the proposed model using saturation dose rate and mean shallow trap energy as fitting parameters and are summarized below.
First, each incident energy has a corresponding penetration depth, or range, which determines the fraction of energy absorbed in the material. In the thinner samples, the range exceeds the thickness of the sample; therefore, the intensity decreases with increasing energy. However, for the thicker samples, the range is less than the sample thickness and the intensity increases linearly with incident energy.
Next, at low current densities, luminescent intensity is linearly proportional to incident current density through the dose rate. At very high current densities, saturation is observed.
Finally, the overall luminescent intensity increased exponentially as T decreased, until reaching an optimum temperature, where it falls off to zero (as the model predicts). The spectra show four distinct bands of emitted photon wavelengths, corresponding to four distinct energy distributions of defect states within the band gap, each behaving differently with temperature. The response of each band to temperature is indicative of the extent to which it is filled.

Le travail presente dans ce memoire consiste en une etude a partir du premier principe "ab initio" du substrat du cuivre, des surfaces propres Cu(111) et Cu(001), ainsi que l'adsorption de l'foxygene sur ces structures. Les proprietes structurales et electroniques ont ete calculees a l'aide de la Theorie de la Fonctionnelle de la Densite (DFT). Les surfaces sont modelisees par la superposition de couches dپfatomes separees par un vide (modele de supercell). Les energies des liaisons de l'foxygene sur differents sites de la structure ont ete determinees et le site le plus stable a ete defini. La nature de la liaison entre les atomes Cu et O est discutee a partir de lپfanalyse de la densite de charges, son transfert, ainsi que la densite dپfetats electroniques de la structure. Nous avons egalement etudie l'finterface entre l'alumine (a-.Al2O3) et la silice (a-SiO2) sur les surfaces propres Cu(111) et Cu(001) respectivement. ▼ Second harmonic generation (SHG) has been utilized as a sensitive and non-invasive optical tool to investigate the interface in Si/
SiO2 systems. This dissertation encompasses two major topics: 1) Polarization-dependent SHG in Si/
SiO2 systems and 2) characterization of boron-induced interface charge traps in Si/
SiO2 systems. Polarization-dependent temporal behavior is investigated in these systems by a time-dependent SHG (TD-SHG) approach. A critical polarization angle is defined in which no temporal SHG response is shown in P-polarized SHG signals. The critical angle is observed to be independent of wafer dopant type, doping concentration, oxide type and oxide thickness. During the growth of the oxide in boron-doped silicon, boron atoms migrate into the oxide creating charge traps near the interface. The charge traps induce a built-in DC electric field across the interface. The properties of the boron-induced charge traps are characterized by TD-SHG measurements including the determination of an energy threshold for filling the boron charge traps.

▼ Neste trabalho foi estudado o efeito dos parâmetros de síntese na resposta de polarização de híbridos Nafion-SiO2 como eletrólitos em células a combustível poliméricas (PEMFC) em elevadas temperaturas (até 130 °C). A fase inorgânica foi adicionada à matriz polimérica com o objetivo de aumentar a retenção de água na membrana em elevadas temperaturas (acima de 100 °C); melhorar as propriedades mecânicas do Nafion e favorecer cineticamente as reações eletródicas. As membranas foram preparadas a partir da incorporação in-situ de sílica em membranas comerciais de Nafion por rota sol-gel acompanhada de catálise ácida. Os parâmetros de síntese, tais como: concentração do catalisador ácido, natureza do solvente, temperatura e tempo de reação e concentração do precursor de silício (Tetraetil-Ortosilicato TEOS) foram avaliados em função do grau de incorporação e resposta de polarização. Os híbridos Nafion-SiO2 foram física e quimicamente caracterizados por gravimetria, termogravimetria (TG), microscopia eletrônica de varredura e espectroscopia de energia dispersiva de raios X (MEV-EDX), espectroscopia de impedância eletroquímica (EIS) e espalhamento de raios X em baixos ângulos (SAXS). Por fim, os híbridos sintetizados foram avaliados diretamente como eletrólitos em células PEM unitárias alimentadas com hidrogênio (H2) e oxigênio (O2) no intervalo de temperatura de 80 ºC a 130 ºC e a 130 ºC em condições de umidade relativa reduzida (75 e 50%). Resumidamente, o desempenho dos híbridos se mostrou fortemente dependente dos parâmetros de síntese, principalmente, o tipo de álcool utilizado e concentração inicial de TEOS.
In this work, the effect of sol-gel synthesis parameters on the preparation and polarization response of Nafion-SiO2 hybrids as electrolytes for proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC) operating at high temperatures (130 °C) was evaluated. The inorganic phase was incorporated in a Nafion matrix with the following purposes: to improve the Nafion water uptake at high temperatures (> 100 °C); to increase the mechanical strength of Nafion and; to accelerate the electrode reactions. The hybrids were prepared by an in-situ incorporation of silica into commercial Nafion membranes using an acid-catalyzed sol-gel route. The effects of synthesis parameters, such as catalyst concentration, sol-gel solvent, temperature and time of both hydrolysis and condensation reactions, and silicon precursor concentration (Tetraethylorthosilicate TEOS), were evaluated as a function on the incorporation degree and polarization response. Nafion-SiO2 hybrids were characterized by gravimetry, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy and X-ray dispersive energy (SEM-EDS), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and X-ray small angle scattering (SAXS). The hybrids were tested as electrolyte in single H2/O2 fuel cells in the temperature range of 80 130 °C and at 130 °C and reduced relative humidity (75% and 50%). ▼ Les travaux présentés dans ce manuscrit, sont basés sur l'étude de l'auto-organisation de la matière à l'échelle nanométrique. A cette échelle, les énergies de surfaces jouent un rôle prépondérant dans cette organisation. Pour comprendre au mieux ses mécanismes nous avons étudié plusieurs types de structures à base de Silicium et de Germanium. Nous avons expérimentalement étudié la croissance cristalline ou amorphe sur différents types de substrats (amorphe : SiO2 et cristallins Si ou SOI). Certain de ces substrats furent nano-structurés en utilisant un faisceau d'ions focalisés de type Gallium ou Or-Silicium. De plus nous avons pu utiliser des surfaces différentes telle que le TiO2 ou le Silicium poreux, afin d'étudier l'organisation de la matière sur des pores de petites tailles (inférieurs à 50nm).
The following works are base on the study of self assembly structures at the nanometric scale. At this scale the surface energy have a major impact in this organization. For a better understanding of this mechanism we studied different Silicon-Germanium base structures. We experimentally studied the crystalline or amorphous growth on different types of substrates (amorphous: SiO2, crystalline: Si or SOI). Some of these substrates were nano-structured using a focused ion beam using gallium source or gold-silicon source. In addition, we were able to use different surfaces such as TiO2 or porous silicon to study the organization of the material small size pore(less than 50nm).

▼ O controle das características da escória de refino primário pode ser realizado pela adição de fluxantes, sendo comumente utilizado a Fluorita (CaF2), isto porque a Fluorita aumenta a solubilidade de CaO e, por conseguinte, aumenta a capacidade de desfosforação de escória. Apesar disso, alguns estudos advertem sobre o risco de liberação de gás tetra fluoreto de silício, que tem caráter nocivo para o meio ambiente. Outro problema relatado é o aumento do desgaste do revestimento refratário impactando nos custos de produção. Neste trabalho de mestrado o uso de Sodalita Nefelínica como fluxante foi comparado com a Fluorita em relação ao desgaste de refratários a base de MgO-C e à fluidez. Os ensaios consistiram em dopar escória de conversor LD com diferentes quantidades de Fluorita e Sodalita (1, 2, 3, 4 % em massa). Os resultados demonstraram que a Fluorita fornece uma escória com menor ponto de fusão e mais fluida, porém ela causa maior desgaste no revestimento refratário, mais que o dobro do desgaste causado pela Sodalita. Acredita-se que isso tenha ocorrido devido a Fluorita ser capaz de aumentar a dissolução tanto do CaO presente na escória quanto do MgO presente no refratário. Este processo é intensificado pela baixa viscosidade apresentada com este fluxante.
The control of the slag characteristics from primary refining can be accomplished by adding fluxes, being commonly used Fluorite (CaF2). This happens because the fluorite increases the solubility of CaO and thus increases the ability of the slag dephosphorization. Nevertheless, some studies warn about the risk of releasing silicon tetra-fluoride gas which has harmful character to the environment. Another problem reported is the increased wear of the refractory lining impacting on production costs. In this master dissertation the use of Sodalite Nepheline as flux was compared with Fluorite concerning MgO-C based refractories wear and fluidity. The tests consisted of doping LD converter slag with different amounts of Fluorite and Sodalite (1, 2, 3, 4 % mass). The results showed that the Fluorite provides a slag with a lower melting point and becomes more fluid, but it causes greater wear on the refractory lining, more than double the wear caused by Sodalite. It is believed that this has occurred due Fluorite be able to enhance the dissolution of the CaO in slag as well as MgO present in the refractory. This process is intensified by the low slag viscosity presented with this flux.

▼ Ce travail porte sur l'étude des propriétés optiques de l'oxyde de zinc (ZnO), matériau semi-conducteur à grand gap. La technique de caractérisation principale de ce travail est la spectroscopie par photoluminescence, technique non destructive permettant d'obtenir des informations relatives à la structure électronique d'un matériau. Après avoir présenté les propriétés du ZnO, de ses alliages, et rappelé quelques principes de base associés à la luminescence des matériaux semi-conducteurs., nous comparerons dans un premier temps les propriétés optiques de différents types de ZnO monocristallin, selon leur mode d'élaboration : matériaux massifs de différentes origines, couches épitaxiées et nanofils. Ces comparaisons ainsi que l'étude des effets sur les spectres de photoluminescence des traitements tels que recuit et passivation nous permettront d'avancer différentes hypothèses quant à l'origine de la luminescence visible dans ce matériau grand gap, sujet encore controversé dans la littérature. Dans un deuxième temps, nous présenterons notre contribution à l'étude du dopage p du matériau, qui est encore aujourd'hui le verrou pour l'obtention de diodes électroluminescentes à base de ZnO. Nous examinerons le problème du dopage intrinsèque de type n et de la compensation, préalable indispensable avant d'aborder le dopage de type p. Le dopage p est traité ici principalement au travers des études optiques d'échantillons implantés et recuits. Plusieurs variantes liées à l'implantation d'azote seront présentées et l'obtention de paires donneur accepteurs clairement mise en évidence pour des conditions de recuit optimisées. La nature des accepteurs présents est discutée par référence aux travaux antérieurs. .
We have studied the optical properties of Zinc Oxide (ZnO), a wide band gap semiconductor material. The main characterization technique used in this work is the photoluminescence spectroscopy, a non destructive technique which gives information about the electronic structure of the material. After presenting the properties of ZnO, its alloys, and reminding some basic principles relative to the luminescence in semiconductor materials, we will compare the optical properties of ZnO single-crystals from different growth methods: bulk material from different origins, epitaxial layers and nanowires. These comparisons and the effects of different treatments (annealing, passivation...) on the PL spectra unable us to emit hypothesis about the origin of the visible luminescence, which is a controversial subject in the literature. Secondly, we will present our contribution to the study of the p doping of ZnO, which is indispensable for device applications based on the p–n junction. We will take a look at the n type intrinsic doping problem before examining the p type doping. We investigate here p type doping through optical studies of implanted and annealed samples. ▼ Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá vlivem slinovacího cyklu na mikrostrukturu pokročilých keramických materiálů. Byly porovnány relativní hustoty a velikosti zrn dosažené jednostupňovým a dvojstupňovým slinováním. Zkoumanými keramickými materiály byly CeO2, Y2O3 a spinel Al2O3MgO s kubickou krystalovou strukturou a TiO2 s tetragonální krystalovou strukturou. Pouze vzorky Al2O3MgO a TiO2 dosáhly relativní hustoty vyšší než 98% a byla u nich dále vyhodnocena mikrostruktura. Výsledky nepotvrdily vliv symetrie krystalové mřížky na efektivitu dvojstupňového slinování.; This bachelor thesis deals with the study of the influence of heating schedule on the microstructure of advanced ceramic materials. Relative densities and grain sizes obtained by Single-Step Sintering and Two-Step Sintering were compared. Examined ceramic materials were CeO2, Y2O3 and spinel Al2O3MgO with cubic structure, and TiO2 with tetragonal structure. Only samples of Al2O3MgO and TiO2 achieved relative densities higher than 98%. Jelikož se v důsledku jedná o jednu soustavu, je první část práce věnována právě těmto celkům a shromažďuje poznatky a způsoby řešení obou jmenovaných soustav v jednom dokumentu. V této první části se seznamujeme s konstrukčním řešením a činností palivových soustav, s požadavky, které na palivové
soustavy klademe a s jejich údržbou a obsluhou. Druhá část práce je potom věnována převážně skutečným palivovým soustavám. Uvedený přehled ukazuje, jak nezanedbatelná je hmotnost paliva při startu letadla s plnými nádržemi. Na závěr je popsána funkce konkrétní palivové
soustavy.; Special literature related to aircraft fuel systems is usually separately divided into airframe fuel systems and engine fuel systems literature. Both systems have to work together, so airframe fuel system and engine fuel systems are joined together into one in this document. First part of this thesis describes aircraft fuel systems in general terms. There are shown primary structural parts and there are mentioned important fuel systems requirements. Also there are said some basic crew and maintenance steps. Second part of the thesis is more practical oriented. There is shown how great is the impact of the fuel on maximum takeoff weight. Also there is explained work of the real aircraft fuel system.

▼ Ein Ziel dieser Arbeit war, die
chemische Vermischung und Struktur von dünnen Schichten an internen
Grenzflächen zu untersuchen. Diese Art der Untersuchung ist von
grundlegender Bedeutung für die Charakterisierung ultradünner
Heterostrukturen. In dieser Arbeit wurde konkret die
Magnesiumoxid/Eisen Grenzschicht studiert. Die Charakterisierung
und das Verständnis dieser Grenzschicht ist ein wichtiger Schritt
auf dem Weg zu einem verfeinerten Verständnis des TMR-Effekts,
sowie potenzieller weiterer Anwendungen in spin-basierten
Speicherkonzepten, wie in Kapitel 2 dargestellt ist. Eine geeignete
Untersuchungsmethode muss dementsprechend nicht nur elementsensitiv
sein, sondern auch zwischen chemischen Bindungszuständen wie
beispielsweise Oxidationsstufen unterscheiden können. Darüber
hinaus ist es unabdingbar, dass mit dieser Methode auch
Informationen durch eine mehrere Atomlagen dicke Deckschicht
hindurch gewonnen werden können, um tatsächlich die interne
Grenzschicht untersuchen zu können. Die
Röntgenphotoemissionsspektroskopie XPS erlaubt aufgrund ihrer
Untersuchungstiefe das Studium solcher verborgener Grenzschichten
[23]. Die Grundlagen dieser Technik, die zum Verständnis der
vorliegenden Arbeit benötigt werden, sind in Kapitel 3.1
dargestellt. Um die Sensibilität der Photoemissionsspektroskopie
für schwache Signale direkt von der Grenzschicht zu erhöhen, wurden
die Experimente mit einer Anregung durch stehende Röntgenwellen
durchgeführt [27]. Der Untersuchungsmaßstab wird auf die
Dimensionen der Probensysteme abgestimmt, indem der einfallende
Röntgenstrahl an einem Mehrschichtspiegel reflektiert wird. Auf den
Aufbau und die Reflektivität dieser Spiegel wird in Kapitel 3.2
eingegangen. Der einfallende Röntgenstrahl bildet durch Interferenz
mit dem reflektierten Strahl eine stehende Welle aus, die die
Periodizität des Röntgenmehrschichtspiegels übernimmt, wie in
Kapitel 3.4 gezeigt wird. Damit steht eine Untersuchungsmethode
bereit, die in den letzten Jahren immer mehr Anwendungen fand, da
sie besonders gut geeignet ist für die Untersuchung verborgener
Grenzflächen [28]. 7 Zusammenfassung der Arbeit und Ausblick 87 Die
Interpretation der aufgenommenen Messreihen wurde bisher durch
einen Vergleich der experimentellen Daten mit numerischen
Simulationen für ein Modell des Probenaufbaus durchgeführt [96].
Dieses Verfahren ist aufwändig und langsam. Im Rahmen dieser Arbeit
wurde deshalb ein analytischer Ansatz zur Berechnung der
Modulationen der XPSSignale in der stehenden Röntgenwelle
entwickelt [125]. Dieses Modell ermöglichte auch ein tiefer
gehendes Verständnis der Methodik. Der Einfluss der einzelnen
strukturellen Parameter in dem Modell der Probe konnte so genauer
studiert werden, wie in Unterkapitel 3.4.2 gezeigt wird. Der Aufbau
der unterschiedlichen durchgeführten Experimente wird in Kapitel 4
vorgestellt. Dabei werden nicht nur die Apparaturen beschrieben,
die verwendet wurden, sondern auch der besondere Aufbau der
