▼ This report gives an account of the experiences and observations made by the author during the three months' practical attachment carried out from August to November 1999. The aim of the attachment was to gain experience in construction and rehabilitation work in a learning institution, to acquire knowledge and skills needed for effective community participation and to provide the author with practical experience of the effects of partnership and cost-sharing policy on basic school communities. The report shows how the historical and current factors influenced the re-establishment of the policy. The degree of community participation and commitment has been reflected revealing factors conducive to maximum community participation. The report discusses the functions of all the stakeholders in terms of their contributions towards development activities.Positive and negative implications of partnership and cost-sharing policy have been examined. The report reveals that information about the state of the local environment and external possibilities are vital for decision-making. The community needs to be aware of the available internal and external opportunities to be able to propose and design urgent and relevant support services needed for development. It is argued in this report that in a situation of extreme poverty and over-dependence on external funding, it is difficult to say that community participation is on a co-equal basis. While participatory approaches towards all round development are being advocated, this is difficult to achieve when the stakeholders of a development venture contribute at different levels. Those who contribute more tend to have a dominating influence in decision making. The main recommendations made in this report are that in order to enhance community participation in development ventures, a communication coordinating system be established at local level (LDCC) in order to facilitate the sensitisation of the community about possibilities and limitations existing to the community. It also recommends that a deliberate move towards income-generating activities if attempted would help empower the community to decide on the nature and patterns of development to be carried out. This would enhance the realisation of co-equal participation among stakeholders which would in the long run enable the achievement developmental goals of the policy.

Knowledge has become a valuable resource for organisations contributing to their competitive advantage through innovation. Over the years, the capture of organisational information has grown to include structured information, such as corporate databases, as well as unstructured information, such as best practices, policies, rules and strategies. However, most of the organisational tacit knowledge gained through experience and development of expertise is never captured by the organisation and remains with employees, leaving the organisation whenever employees depart. The goal of the dissertation is to understand how knowledge travels through an enterprise, in order to gain insight into the possibilities of capturing organisational tacit knowledge, while encouraging employee collaboration. Based on this understanding, the aim is to propose a model that will allow knowledge sharing and encourage collaboration in order to present the organisation with an alternative knowledge base of daily user activities, organisational experiences and learning. The proposed collaboration model makes use of multiple agents, namely a user agent, a conversation manager agent, question analysis and query agents and a conversation classifier. The model aims to store knowledge base entries in an ontology-based structure and to leverage off the power of existing search engine technologies to perform searches. An implementation of the proposed model is discussed using Microsoft Office SharePoint Server, a popular enterprise collaboration platform, which assists implementation and user adoption.

▼ For inverse-dynamic models cost functions account for the load sharing problem that arises when modelling the musculoskeletal system. This study focuses on the optimisation of the energy-related cost function integrated in the Delft Shoulder & Elbow Model and compares the translation of the obtained representation to results from in vitro measurements. An existing data set containing electromyography (EMG) recordings of elbow flexors (m. biceps brachii, m. brachialis and m. brachioradialis) and extensors (m. triceps brachii and m. anconeus) was used. A grid search was performed over a range of [1, 120] for b¬1 and [1, 60] for b2. The overall explained variance was calculated for each cost function, classifying the particular muscles in flexion and/or extension tasks where activity is expected. For the comparison to in vitro measurements the ratio of contraction dynamics and activation dynamics described by the cost function was determined under varying degree of force production over all muscles used for the analysis. Optimal weight factors were obtained for b1 = 3 and b2 = 50. The contribution of the contraction dynamics compared to the activation dynamics was 60% at 50% of its maximal force generation and 78% at maximal force generation which compares to the in vitro measurements.

▼ Collaborative Consumption (CC) is a new socioeconomic groundswell in which traditional
sharing, bartering, lending, trading, renting, gifting, and swapping are redefined through technology and peer communities. It is characterized by access, instead of ownership, to products and services thereby benefiting people, profit and planet. However, there is a dearth of empirical evidence about the actual growth potential of CC. The objective of this research is to yield descriptive and explanatory knowledge on the consumer potential of Collaborative Consumption, by determining if, and because of what factors, consumers living in Amsterdam would take part in Collaborative Consumption. A Mixed METHODS approach is adopted. First Grounded Theory Methods are adopted in order to find out what motives (and other explanatory factors) current users have for taking part in CC (N=20). These findings are then tested in a non-experimental setting by means of a large N-survey among 1330 citizens of Amsterdam. The RESULTS on the dependent variable indicate that there is a substantial willingness for taking part in CC. This willingness differs per item (power drill & bicycle, car, ride, meal, garden, accommodation, skill), role (taker, provider), and whether there is money involved (buying, selling, renting, renting out) or not (lending, lending out, giving, receiving, swapping). Motives influencing the dependent variable are; saving / earning money, meeting people, contributing to a healthy environment, social attitude towards the neighbourhood, general social attitude and environmental behaviour. Other explanatory factors are recommendation, online- and offline experience. Furthermore, results on the different demographics indicate that women are slightly more likely than men to take part in CC. When income and age increase, the willingness to take part in CC slightly decreases and education correlates positively with the dependent variable. The 54 non-western immigrant group demonstrated the highest willingness of all ethnic groups.

▼ Today it has become standard for organizations to rely on self-serving teams to make decisions since they are believed to provide access to bigger pools of information and knowledge than individual managers. However, while a lot of research has been focusing on how to improve information and knowledge sharing in teams to better promote the making of deliverables, not much has been said about how self-serving teams actually communicate information and knowledge. In this thesis a qualitative study was conducted with seven members of a software-provisioning team to, with particular focus on using IT when communicating, investigate how information and knowledge is communicated within and across team boundaries. Findings in this thesis suggest that there is a tension between information and knowledge sharing in teams. While the formalization of technological channels might facilitate effective information sharing in teams, it could have negative effects on knowledge sharing.

sharing we are asked to split a secret into
several shares in such a way that a minimum number of shares is
necessary and sufficient to reconstruct the secret. Rational secret
sharing considers secret
sharing in the context of adversarial
players who want to learn the secret but, secondarily, want to
prevent other players from learning the secret. We present
protocols, and bounds on the effectiveness of any protocol, for
recombining secret shares in the presence of players who do not
want others to learn the secret (rationality), may not want to
learn the secret themselves (maliciousness), may be colluding, may
have unbounded computational capacity, may be able to synchronize
sends (asynchronous/synchronous broadcast), and/or may be able to
recognize the secret independently (conspicuousness). We propose
four protocols and analyze their security against players and
coalitions who are each rational or malicious. We also prove three
results that show protocols using only asynchronous broadcast are
less secure than what can be achieved by protocols using
synchronous broadcast.

▼ This dissertation consists of two independent essays approaching two macroeconomic problems: development outcomes and international risk
sharing.
The first essay analyzes the relationship of income inequality and economic development. I use a difference-in-differences specification with data from Brazilian municipalities to show empirical evidence that the origins of inequality matter to determine development outcomes across different economies. Inequality in sugar-producing areas in Brazil was historically associated with non-market allocation of resources, namely slavery and royal land grants. In contrast, wheat-growing places were settled under market-related mechanisms of free labor and auction acquisition of land. I add to the Engerman-Sokoloff hypothesis by showing that there is not a simple relationship of inequality and development. Instead, I find that non-market inequality was harmful compared to market inequality. There is a differential negative effect of inequality on development in sugar compared to wheat areas. Schooling and public goods provision seem to be two important channels for those different paths of development.
The second essay explores pairwise determinants of international risk
sharing. The low levels of income and consumption risk
sharing found in empirical research are still not well understood in the literature. I first estimate the amount of risk
sharing and find averages of zero for income and of 37% for consumption. Then I test potential direct determinants and find that equity assets seem to be contributing to income risk
sharing. For consumption, international deposits seem to be helpful. Finally I look for indirect determinants, among which WTO membership, common language, migration and the share of companies listed in the stock market play a role for income risk
sharing. For consumption, the size of the economies, WTO and regional trade agreements, geographic distance, migration, ease of doing business and a legal rights index seem to be important.

▼ This study is to investigate the relationship among profit
sharing,
sharing fairness, job involvement and working performance by the empirical research. The goal of this study is to suggest the company how to design more incentive system from the profit
sharing and
sharing fairness when the profit
sharing will become the operation expense in Taiwan.
500 questionnaires were sent to the company which is based on the north of Hsin-Chu County. The valid questionnaires are 174 copies in total after the return. Upon the empirical analysis, the important findings are as the following:
1.Profit
sharing system and
sharing fairness are positive correlated. The more the employees are satisfied with the profit
sharing system and feel the importance of the profit
sharing system, the higher their awareness is on the fairness of the profit distribution and execution procedure.
2.Profit
sharing system is not significant to job involvement and working performance. When the time goes by, the incentive effect from the profit
sharing system will decrease. Therefore, the effect of profit
sharing system is not significt to job involvement and working performance.
3.
Sharing fairness is not significant to job involvement, but significant to the goal achievement of working performance and collaborationâs satisfaction. If the employee doesnât understand the profit
sharing system, it easily causes the unfair feeling and it might impact on the job involvement. But if the company can emphasize the fairness of the execution procedure, it can increase the possibility of the goal achievement and enhance the collaborationâs satisfaction.
4.Profit
sharing system canât affect the working performance and job involvement by the intermediate effect of
sharing fairness. Since the profit
sharing system has been implemented for a while and became part of salary, it canât draw more attraction as the beginning. In addition, if the employee starts to suspect the fairness of the profit
sharing, it will result in the less influence on job involvement and working performance.

flexible, and adaptive nature of agile development, it
may suffer from knowledge
sharing limitations. This includes knowledge loss due
to retirement or high turnover rates of skilled professionals and knowledge hoarding due to interpersonal or organizational climate. The objective of this work is
to build a knowledge
sharing culture and collaboration norm in the workplace for
small agile development teams with high turnover rates, where organizational success is not only maintained but also enhanced. The Knowledge Temple, the proposed
approach, is hybrid, incorporating knowledge
sharing and building models, such as
cognitive apprenticeship, on-the-job-training, solo programming, pair programming,
parallel peer programming, pair rotation, and knowledge repository creation. This
hierarchical approach is designed as an iterative and incremental solution to share
and create knowledge in a collaborative and cooperative fashion. A single-blind experiment was performed with the Innovation in Computing Research (iCORE) at
Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, where the Knowledge Temple technique was
administered in three different projects with ten varied Temples. To evaluate this
empirical experiment, Temple members' development contributions, a Knowledge
Temple questionnaire, and observational outcomes were utilized. Consequently, the
results of the Knowledge Temple experiment showed great potential for an impactful
approach. The results indicate novice-novice inspiration to solve motivation issues.
They also show development
flexibility for expert developers that may increase the
individual and collaborative productivity. Moreover, this new technique offers schedule flexibility for all the team members, hands-on knowledge
sharing for agile learners
both master and apprentice supported, and good use of new knowledge
sharing technologies to allow cooperative knowledge transformation and development.

▼ Studies in recent years have revealed that use of ICT can significantly impact knowledge sharing in organizations by enhancing the knowledge sharing process, reducing knowledge sharing barriers, and introducing technology barriers. While this has been identified in many studies and a significant research has been carried out to identify knowledge sharing barriers, there exists a considerable dearth of research when the question of ‘which knowledge sharing barriers can ICT reduce and how?’ is posed. This thesis aims to address this question by studying the case of an organization using ICT for knowledge sharing. The study was carried out using questionnaire and interview findings and results showed that if ICT is effectively used, a number of knowledge sharing barriers - in addition to time and space barriers - can be successfully reduced. Organizational and individual knowledge sharing barriers saw most reduction by ICT while technology barriers did not see any reduction by use of ICT alone. This is in coherence with different studies that use of ICT for knowledge sharing introduces its own technology barriers. However the results show that if employees are tech-savvy and management considerably supports employee involvement in the process of design and deployment of ICT enabled knowledge sharing, technology barriers can also be greatly reduced and even entirely eliminated.

▼ There is problematic flow of Knowledge among rice farmers in Ghana, which constitutes
one of the critical challenges that is face in rice production in country. Effective knowledge
sharing, therefore, offers great potential for addressing the challenges of rice production
in Ghana. The current study explores the knowledge
sharing practices among rice
farmers in the Eastern Region of Ghana in order to develop strategies to enhance
knowledge
sharing. The study was underpinned by the pragmatic paradigm where
concurrent triangulation mixed-method design was used for the study. Data was gathered
with survey and interviews. A total sample of 110 was used; involving 101 survey
respondents and 9 interview participants. The survey data was analyse descriptively
using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS), version 26. The interview
finding was analysed using thematic analysis. Findings revealed informal and elementary
knowledge
sharing practices among the rice farmers, which are mostly face-to-face. The
study suggests coherent and structured strategy for knowledge
sharing. It established
that a successful implementation of knowledge
sharing would depend on identifying and
linking knowledge
sharing enablers to tools and technologies. The proposed strategies
would not only improve knowledge
sharing among rice farmers in Ghana and add to the
body of knowledge. The findings of the study may also be adopted by rice farming
communities in other African countries whose rice farming context is similar to the context
in Ghana.

▼ Verifiable quantum secret
sharing (VQSS) is the task of
sharing a secret quantum state among the n nodes of a quantum network, in a way that it is possible to verify that the secret has been correctly distributed. A number of protocols that perform this task have been proposed. In particular, the verifiable hybrid secret
sharing (VHSS) scheme proposed by Lipinska et al. (2019) realizes this task while reducing the number of required qubits, as compared to other existing protocols. The VHSS scheme was proven secure for noiseless quantum networks. In this work, we analyze its performance in the presence of noise. To do that, we first define different noise models in which qubits can be randomly erased or depolarized. Then, we propose several modifications for the protocol that allow us to run it more efficiently on quantum networks described by such noise models. Additionally, we explore a new approach to the VQSS task using approximate quantum error correction. We propose the verifiable trap secret
sharing (VTSS) protocol, which combines the scheme by Lipinska et al. (2019) and the trap code by Broadbent et al. (2013). Our protocol achieves the same functionalities as the VHSS protocol and only requires that a strict majority of the nodes follows the protocol honestly, raising the maximum number of nodes that can cheat from ⌊(n-1)/4⌋ to ⌊(n-1)/2⌋. We can do this at the cost of increasing the probability of error in the protocol.

▼ Due to the emerging of cloud-based services, people have been, gradually, changing the
way they store their data. The possibility to store data on a remote location, accessible
from anywhere, at any time, with the option to, easily and at any time, adjust the services
depending on their needs, are characteristics that are greatly appreciated by the users. However,
recent media scandals, regarding governmental surveillance programs, arose some trust issues
regarding these cloud-based services. The usage of these services, have been made with greater
care, because no one wants their data to be visible to those services, nor to unauthorized third
parties. The need to develop platforms which are capable of storing and computing data in a
privately and securely manner arises.
Hoping to contribute to this need, this dissertation presents a secure storage system, using
secure multi-party computation techniques, able to store and process secret shared data, preserving
the ability to query the system using SQL.
Trying to bridge the performance gap between this secure system and the common ones, we
introduce secret
sharing algorithms, based on those used in the secure computation platform
Sharemind, offering tradeoffs between security and performance. With those algorithms,
this system provides the option to, depending on the client’s needs, adjust the security and
performance configurations.

▼ In the new global economy, knowledge is recognised
as one of the most valuable organisational assets and an important
competitive advantage. Therefore organisations need to concede that
knowledge
sharing is imperative in order to survive and compete
effectively in the global economy. This study examined the extent
to which culture impacted the effectiveness of knowledge
sharing in
an organisation. There were four dimensions of culture identified
that influence knowledge
sharing namely individualism/collectivism,
power distance, masculinity/feminity and uncertainty avoidance.
This research was quantitative in nature. A web based questionnaire
was administered to a sample of 96 respondents in top and middle
management by means of convenience sampling. The findings in this
study indicate that age, gender and work experience have no
influence on the impact of culture on knowledge
sharing. It was
further found that three out of the four cultural dimensions
impacted knowledge
sharing positively. They were low individualism
and high collectivism, low power distance and low masculinity and
high feminity. The fourth cultural dimension uncertainty avoidance
was found to be high indicating a negative impact on knowledge
sharing. Recommendations for future research include a larger
sample size for a more comprehensive study, a comparative study
with other chrome manufacturing operations and identifying the
necessary tools required to reduce high uncertainty avoidance
cultures. Copyright

▼ Kennis is van groeiend belang voor een toekomstbestendige organisatie en een gedegen concurrentiepositie. Voor het beheren van deze kennis wordt in een aantal organisaties gebruik gemaakt van IT-oplossingen zoals een wiki of een online bedrijfscommunity. Dit onderzoek gaat over de ontwikkeling van kennisdelen in de bedrijfscommunity van softwareonderneming Cordys in de afgelopen drie jaar. Daarvoor is gebruik gemaakt van gegevens uit Google Analytics en enquêtes die online zijn afgenomen onder leden van de Cordys Community. De Cordys Community is enerzijds flink gegroeid in bijvoorbeeld ledental en de frequentie waarmee leden gebruik maken van de community. Aan de andere kant blijft online samenwerken en de interactie sterk achter bij verwachtingen die geschapen worden in de literatuur. Om meer betrokkenheid en interactie te creëren zal de conversatie binnen de Cordys Community moeten gaan plaatsvinden. Dit kan bijvoorbeeld door e-mail- en chatfunctionaliteit aan de community toe te voegen en consequenties te verbinden aan het delen van kennis.

▼ Information Technology (IT) professionals in higher education regularly collaborate in communities of practice. The community knowledge
sharing wiki is a collaboration tool IT professionals utilize as a centralized platform to improve knowledge and share best practices. The goals of the wiki are to improve the knowledge of IT professionals and the services of IT organizations in higher education. The primary benefit of IT professionals establishing a knowledge
sharing wiki is having a centralized, structured, searchable, and expert reviewed resource for IT related service areas. As this wiki was further developed, measurements were to be defined to regularly report and review the wiki successes and failures. These measurements would ensure information is current and beneficial to all participants.
A structure for the wiki was developed and the wiki was promoted to IT professionals via established community mailing lists and other outreach activities. The success of this knowledge
sharing wiki implementation depended upon identifying a core group of professionals interested in establishing and updating the wiki. Once the wiki was established, others in the community would also be encouraged to contribute and participate in the wiki to ensure the tool was effective and useful for professionals and organizations to improve their IT services.
Although many IT professionals expressed interest in the wiki, a core group of professionals could not be identified to establish the knowledge
sharing wiki. A survey was conducted to identify the barriers with establishing the wiki and determine criteria for the wiki to be a beneficial tool to professionals. Professionals primarily lacked the time to participate and also cited an abundance of other resources already available in the field. Some of the professionals may have contributed if an incentive of some type was offered. While the establishment of the wiki has not been realized, the knowledge gained through developing the foundations for the wiki, promoting the wiki and analyzing the challenges with establishing the wiki have been beneficial to the IT community.

▼ In multimedia sharing networks such as YouTube, and
Flicker, etc, users actively participate and interact with each
other, which influences not only each individual but also the
entire system performance. Successful deployments of multimedia
sharing networks show that user cooperation helps provide efficient
and highly scalable platforms for multimedia distribution. However,
since users are selfish, their cooperation cannot be guaranteed. In
this thesis, we aim to design incentive mechanisms to stimulate
user cooperation and also optimize the system performance. Without
loss of generality, we use two multimedia applications as examples
to show how to achieve our research goals. We first study a two-hop
cooperative wireless multicast system, here after the base station
broadcasts a packet, a relay node who receives the packet correctly
helps forward it to the others. We model user interaction in this
system as a multi-seller multi-buyer payment based game, where
users pay to receive relay service and get paid if they help
forward a packet. We then study an interactive multiview video
streaming (IMVS) system, where an user can select one out of many
available views for observation and switch views frequently. With
the advances of multiview video coding techniques, users can
cooperatively download videos even if they are watching different
views. We then model user interaction as an indirect reciprocity
game and formulate users' decision making associated with their
view switching as a Markov decision process. In these two examples,
our analysis shows that user behavior impacts the system
performance significantly. Thus, we optimize our incentive
mechanisms, which drive the games to desired stable equilibria,
where users cooperate with each other and the system performance is
maximized at the same time.

▼ This thesis explores the history of political power-
sharing in Nigeria through three periods: the pre-colonial period, occurring from roughly 1800 to 1880, the transition to colonial rule from 1880 to 1914 and the colonial period, from 1914 to 1960. Since 1960, Nigeria has had a robust history of cooperation between elites of the three dominant ethnic elites: Igbo, Hausa-Fulani and Yoruba. Using the competing concepts of consociationalism and hegemonic control, the thesis examines whether prior histories of power-
sharing within and between these ethnic groups contributed to a historical continuity of power-
sharing. Using mostly secondary literature for the first two periods and primary sources examining the extent to which each group shared power under British rule for the third, the thesis finds that there’s little evidence that a history of cooperation or control leads to continued preference for either mode of interaction. The Igbo were cooperative before colonialism, but were the least amenable to power-
sharing of the groups under British rule, while the Yoruba transitioned from a control mode to a more cooperative mode, and the Hausa-Fulani remained mostly cooperative throughout their history. More research is needed, but the evidence suggests that power-
sharing can be implemented regardless of cultural inclinations, historical divisions and rivalries, as that is what has happened in Nigeria.

▼ The study draws attention to the under researched
domain of knowledge sharing in the context of cross functional
teams. The knowledge-based view of the firm is based on the notion
that value is created primarily not from tangible resources but
from intangible or knowledge-based assets (Sveiby, 1997) and
knowledge is the most important source of competitive advantage and
sustained superior performance (Drucker, 1995; Spender and Grant,
1996). Teece (2000) argued that the essence of the firm is its
ability to create, transfer, assemble, integrate, protect and
exploit knowledge assets. By intensifying and expanding new
knowledge (creation and sharing) not only a company can develop new
tangible products and services that improve its market position but
it can also form the basis for organizational change and renewal.
Literature says that company growth is primarily dependent on its
ability to develop, leverage, and utilize its knowledge base
(Saloj¨arvi, Furu, and Sveiby, 2005). From a strategic point of
view, the focus of firms should be on creating inimitable knowledge
and sharing it within the corporation (Sveiby, 2001). Traditional
organizations with heavy internal competition, rigid functional
boundaries and undue compartmentalization exhibit sub-optimal
performance by inhibiting critical information flows (Mohamed,
Stankosky and Murray, 2004). To avoid such situation organizations
move to either project based or permanent cross functional teams as
an attempt to solve this problem by building organizational
connections across different functional units (Mohamed, Stankosky
and Murray, 2004). Study deals with investigating the antecedents
of knowledge sharing among cross functional team members and
subsequently examining its impact on the performance. These
antecedents have been classified under organizational
characteristics, job characteristics and individual characteristic.
The study has been based upon the data collected from 582 team
members among 69 teams in 26 surveyed organizations in the
country.

In this dissertation, I explore the social
sharing of hallucinations and address the primary question of the lived-experience of this phenomenon from multiple perspectives. What is it like to speak about and hear about hallucinated experience outside of professional contexts? I interviewed 23 individuals regarding their experience
sharing hallucinations with others (Experiencers) or hearing about hallucinations from individuals who experienced them (Listeners). Data were gathered from community as well as clinical samples. A wide variety of hallucination contexts were present, ranging from sleep paralysis, post-partum psychosis, drug-ingestion, mental illnesses, medically-related conditions (stroke, fever), healing, religious visions, as well as encounters with ghosts, archetypes, and deities. I analyzed these data using a hermeneutic-phenomenological perspective and process, following Max van Manen’s style of using this methodology.
Through analysis, four Facets were recognized: Care, Sense-Making, Dual-Processing, and Ontological Cross-Bleed. Care Facet represents the explicit and hidden experiences and expressions of care that Listeners and Experiences share or withhold. For Experiencers, the Sense-Making Facet represents experiences of sense-making related to determinations of whether hallucinations are real, why they occur, and what they mean. Listener experiences of sense-making include shock, confusion, and processes of curiosity and determination regarding the hallucination. Dual-Processing Facet explores the dual experiential response many Listeners described when hearing about a hallucination. This response often involves interior thoughts and reactions that are masked from exterior representation. Finally, the Ontological Cross-Bleed Facet explores the transition that occurs during social
sharing in which the hallucination transfers from being an object of consciousness only for the individual having the hallucination, to an object of consciousness for a Listener as well. Results of this study can help clinical psychologists tailor treatments and recommendations to individuals who are involved in related conversations and can also provide useful knowledge to community members who themselves are involved in the
sharing, either from Experiencer or Listener standpoints.

▼ Big data in crop agriculture is information collected by sophisticated machinery at the farm level, as well as externally generated data, such as field satellite imagery. Although some of this data is useful to individual farmers, much of it has little value to the farmer that collects it. Capturing the true value of big data comes when it is aggregated over many farms, allowing researchers to find underlying bio-physical and economical relationships.
We conduct a hypothetical choice experiment to analyze farmers’ willingness to share data by asking farmers in Saskatchewan whether they would participate in a big data
sharing program. The choice tasks varied the type of organization that operated the big data program and included financial and non-financial incentives.
Heteroscedastic and random effects probit models are presented using the data from the survey. The results are consistent across models and find that farmers are most willing to share their data with university researchers, followed by crop input suppliers or grower associations, and financial institutions or equipment manufacturers. Farmers are least willing to share their data with government. Farmers are more willing to share data in the presence of a financial incentive or non-financial incentive such as comparative benchmark statistics or prescription maps generated from the data submitted.
Checks for robustness and heterogeneity indicate there is no self-selection bias into the survey, and no heterogeneity in the results for financial incentive and farm revenue. A latent class logit model determines the farmer population may be heterogenous in their willingness to participate in a big data
sharing program, but homogenous in their ordering of preferences for organization, financial incentive, and non-financial incentive. In addition, demographic variables are not related to class membership.

▼ ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Can one measure the value of knowledge sharing? How does one assess the
effectiveness of a knowledge network with regard to supporting knowledge
sharing? These are pertinent questions that knowledge managers are faced
with, because geographically dispersed organizations rely on knowledge
networks to integrate its dispersed knowledge.
These questions must be understood in the context of a knowledge
management approach, for the approach determines how one navigates the
complex landscape of knowledge sharing. This complexity is driven by the
social dynamics that exist between organizational members. If the intricacies
of these social dynamics can be highlighted, it will assist management in
deciding which interventions to implement to increase a knowledge network’s
effectiveness.
Firstly, a pragmatic approach to knowledge management proposes that
management can switch between a bottom-up and top-down view of
knowledge sharing in a knowledge network.
Secondly, management requires a vehicle to implement the pragmatic
approach. The proposed vehicle is the knowledge network framework, for it
plays a central role in the design, implementation and maintenance of a
knowledge network.
Finally, the embeddedness-measuring framework is developed to analyze the
social dynamics between knowledge network members and the content they
share amongst one another. The implementation of this framework allows for
the analysis of interviews that were conducted in a case study at A Chemicals
Company (ACC). Five communities of ACC’s knowledge network are
investigated and the results emphasize the dynamics of knowledge sharing
between network members.
The implications of the results are as follows:
• A navigation system is proposed that enables the implementation
of the pragmatic approach.
• A schedule for the evaluation of a knowledge network enables
management to assess the effects of interventions.

▼ Outsourcing risks problem for the new ethical drugs manufacturing and commercialization is one of the most challenging problems for the pharmaceutical firms due to the big uncertainty of the FDA testing result, fluctuating market performance, changing government and finance environment. Motivated by the need of the ethical drugs risks
sharing in the pharmaceutical industry, we are introducing a finite period analysis based on three different types of contracts which distinguished by the level of risk
sharing including price discount, quantity flexibility and forecasting methods. These contracts are short term contract, long term time flexible contract and long term time inflexible contract. In order to analyze the performances of risk
sharing of those contracts, we use mathematical functions to express the price discount, quantity flexibility and the demand risk and put them into the model of total extra outsourcing cost. By successfully use the concept of the Leibnitz’s Rule and newsvendor model, we successfully simplified the problem and classified the level of risk
sharing for each contract, and also realized the complexity for those contracts. At the end of this thesis, we use a numerical analysis to give an introduction of how our model could be used in the contract selection. A quantitative solution is followed after that introduction and will select the best contract strategy under certain circumstance. The purpose of this thesis is to generate cost functions for the contracts, and help the firm to select the best contract strategy under different circumstances.

In a fast-changing and volatile business world, firms draw on dynamic capabilities to create, extend and modify their resources and capabilities in order to enhance their competitive position. Cross-cultural acquisitions are one of the corporate strategies for firms to grow across borders and to gain access to new bases of knowledge and capabilities. Management desires to integrate the best practices from both firms after acquisition. Best practices are considered to be the best operational capabilities in various organizational functions to operate a firm effectively and efficiently. Operational capabilities draw on organizational routines that embody knowledge. Through sensing opportunities, seizing identified opportunities and reconfiguring resources and capabilities, firms can systematically integrate best practices in operational capabilities from the acquiring and acquired firms. Knowledge sharing within the context of the three dynamic capabilities processes affects the knowledge-based routines that make up operational capabilities. Hence, knowledge sharing is embedded in the three dynamic capabilities processes that enable the integration of best practices in operational capabilities. There are intensive interpersonal interactions during the knowledge sharing process. In a cross-cultural context, culture plays an important role in knowledge sharing and hence affects best operational capabilities integration. This dissertation endeavors to explore how and when culture makes a difference to the efficiency and effectiveness of knowledge sharing, a change which is visible in altered operational capabilities, during the sensing, seizing and reconfiguring processes. The qualitative case study approach supports this empirical research by obtaining rich contextual data and insightful information from interviewees to better understand the cross-cultural micro-foundations underlying knowledge sharing for the integration of best practices in operational capabilities. Three cross-cultural acquisition cases of one multi-national corporation were purposefully selected to reflect certain features of different types of acquisitions. The empirical findings from this research show that different cultural dimensions exert different impacts with different degrees of strength on the efficiency and effectiveness of the knowledge sharing during the sensing, seizing and reconfiguring processes. This in turn affects the integration of best practices in operational capabilities. This empirical research contributes practical insights. In particular, it suggests the introduction of structured processes to facilitate knowledge sharing for integration of best practices systematically; such structured processes should account for different cultural dimensions affecting knowledge sharing in different processes in cross-cultural acquisitions. The fragmented nature of the construction industry leads to poor sharing of knowledge between the designers and constructors of projects. Most construction problems arise because of deficiencies in the design. More often than not, these problems are left to the constructors to solve at the site. However, the knowledge gained by the constructors in solving these problems is unlikely to be shared with the designers in such a way that the same design deficiencies will be avoided in future projects. Effective knowledge sharing contributes towards improving the designer construction knowledge. There are a number of design-construction interfaces in construction projects, during which information exchange and knowledge sharing could take place between designers and contractors. This information exchange and knowledge sharing will help to overcome the design deficiencies as well as problems during construction attributed to these deficiencies. Construction project and organizational knowledge that are crucial to the designers and Knowledge Management tools for locating and sharing project knowledge are identified. This research used responses from forty-two (42) respondents to test the relationships between the application of knowledge sharing tools and the improvement of designer construction knowledge, with respect to the crucial construction project and organizational knowledge areas identified in the Malaysian construction industry. At the same time, the frequencies with which the sharing of construction knowledge between designers and constructors occurs through the various approaches were compared. The results of the analysis confirmed positive relationships between the application of all the knowledge-sharing approaches (except brainstorming) and the designer construction knowledge. The positive relationships between the variables for the non-IT knowledge sharing tools support the findings of studies carried out by earlier researchers which suggest that in the construction industry, knowledge sharing and learning depend heavily on the informal social processes and practices that lean towards a community approach. However, whilst respondents in this study perceive that there is a positive relationship between applying the IT based knowledge sharing tools and the improvement of designer construction knowledge, studies by various other researchers indicate otherwise, in which it was concluded that the ICT-based approach to sharing of project knowledge has not been very effective. The rankings for the choice of knowledge sharing tools indicate a similar pattern as those arrived at in a UK study except for research collaboration.

This dissertation aims to explore and give an adequate view of knowledge sharing adoption in Singapore organisations by answering the following research questions: [RQ1]: What is the relationship between knowledge sharing techniques/tools and knowledge sharing adoption within the organisation in Singapore? [RQ2]: What impacts do these key knowledge management dimensions (people, leadership, information systems, processes, organisational structure and reward system) have on knowledge sharing adoption in Singapore organisations? [RQ3]: Among these key knowledge management dimensions (people, leadership, information systems, processes, organisational structure and reward system), which are the better predictors of good knowledge sharing practices in Singapore organisations? From October to December 2009, 900 sets of survey information sheet and questionnaire were given to Singapore educational agents namely University of Newcastle (Singapore Campus), TMC Educational Group and Singapore Human Resources Institute for distribution to potential respondents. A total of 234 questionnaires were returned. For the first research question, research findings reveals that these frequently used knowledge sharing techniques and tools: discussions, trainings, collaboration/teamwork and brainstorming session are associated with the level of knowledge sharing. Less frequently used knowledge sharing techniques and tools: workshops, conferences, seminars and focus groups are also associated with the level of knowledge sharing. For the second research question, data analysis confirms that knowledge management dimensions such as leadership, information systems, processes, organisational structure, reward system and people characteristic (such as: trust and communication among staff) are positively associated with the adoption of knowledge sharing in Singapore organisations. For the third research question, data analysis results show that knowledge management dimensions such as leadership, people and knowledge sharing processes are better predictors of adoption of knowledge sharing in Singapore organisations than other knowledge management dimensions such as information system, organisational structure and reward system.

▼ Electronic cash is an important tool for preserving
on-line privacy. It allows a user to make purchases without
revealing his identity to the merchant and prevents banks from
monitoring the transactions of all their users. In this thesis, we
use secret
sharing techniques to extend electronic cash. We examine
the problem of fair exchange that lets a user atomically exchange
an electronic coin for some digital good or service. While all fair
exchange protocols require the help of a trusted third party, in an
optimistic protocol, the trusted party becomes involved only if
something goes wrong. We construct the first optimistic fair
exchange protocol for exchanging a single electronic coin for a
digital good or service. We use secret
sharing to extend the
protocol to allow a user to efficiently exchange multiple
electronic coins for multiple goods and services in one atomic
transaction. We also show how a user can pay a single electronic
coin for multiple goods or services, which need not be delivered
atomically. We apply these fair exchange protocols to create
incentives in anonymous peer-to-peer filesharing systems. We show
how to perform an efficient fair exchange for very large files
(such as movies); the trusted third party can resolve problems
without downloading the entire file. We also show how to escrow
electronic coins to allow peers to barter for files. If one of the
peers fails to deliver, he acquires the escrowed coin. Electronic
cash can be used for anonymous authentication. Instead of
purchasing a good or service, the user may use electronic coins to
access restricted resources. For example, the user may purchase a
license to download twenty songs a month from a provider. We show
how to use secret
sharing to create flexible policies. In the case
where the electronic coins are stored on a small hardware device,
the extra flexibility may be used to provide glitch protection in
case the user accidentally spends a few extra coins. Finally, we
end by developing a new secret
sharing protocol for a disjunctive
multi-level access structure.
