▼ This dissertation examines the notion of introspection
in philosophy of mind. I begin by looking at the type of process
that introspection might be. Three prominent answers to this
standard question are examined: introspection might be an inner
sense (perceptual
knowledge), a form of inference (rational
knowledge), or there might be a parity of
self and other
theory-based “mindreading,” as claimed by, for example, the
“theory” theory. I argue all three approaches are plausible by
their own epistemic lights, although all understand the
first-person nature of introspection differently. As I explain, it
is hard to notice any of the three operating within ourselves;
however, there is also no definitive evidence that they do not do
so. It might be an empirical question – still open – if
neuroscience can detect an inner sense operating or discover the
application of inferential rules. To stress the question’s
openness, I propose a pluralist approach: introspection may be
multiple processes rather than just one. I examine positive
arguments for this claim in the literature and advance an
additional argument, that introspection could be multiply-realized
across different
self-knowing creatures. Pluralism makes
identifying introspection by its process(es) harder. Further,
granting plural introspective processes, external activities, such
as talking to a friend or reading in the psychological literature,
might count as introspection insofar as they afford
self-
knowledge.
I seek a different way to pinpoint introspection by adopting and
adapting Sydney Shoemaker’s work on
self-
knowledge. This, I argue,
is both a representative and a normative framework. I suggest that
in introspecting we seek not only
self-
knowledge per se but also to
bring ourselves closer to an ideal of rational agency such as
Shoemaker’s. We introspect when sceptical of our own agency
compared to our model of agency, so we introspect when we both seek
self-
knowledge and incorporate it into our agency. This permits a
plural view of introspection, one that still, indeed, counts
self-
knowledge gleaned from a friend as introspection, but a
clearer and somewhat narrower view of the first-personal nature of
introspection is obtained.

▼ The platonic speech Charmides belongs to Plato’s early writings and consists of a renarration of the dialogue by Socrates to one of his friends who is not named. The basic topic of the conservation is prudence, which is one of the virtues that render a man “righteous”.Socrates has just returned from the Potidea siege in 431 B. C., and asks about the philosophical activity of young people. Kritias promises to introduce him to his cousin Charmides. Socrates was enthusiastic by the young man’s external appearance and expresses the wish to inspect whether he has a beautiful soul, too.

▼ The aim of this thesis is to offer up a structure of what I call Emotional
Self-Knowledge—roughly,
knowledge of one’s own emotions. I begin with a broad understanding of an emotion event, according to which emotion events include a set of bodily feelings in response to some object. I then argue that
knowledge of the object and the feeling of the emotion are required parts of knowing one’s own emotions if we expect emotional
self-
knowledge to be prudentially useful. I then outlining three levels of emotional
self. The first requires
knowledge of the feeling on is experiencing; the second requires that
knowledge plus
knowledge of the emotionally-salient object. The final level is
knowledge of one’s emotional dispositions, and as such is the most robust form of emotional
self-
knowledge. I conclude by examining some cases in which emotional
self-
knowledge can be usefully applied towards an agents own prudential goals.

Chapter 1. Moran's account – Chapter 2. Rational agency – Chapter 3. Transparency – Chapter 4. How can we know and not know what we believe? – Chapter 5. Self-deception – Chapter 6. Akrasia – Thesis conclusion – References.
My thesis is that the practical irrationalities that we call anomalies are failures of the rational agent to know her own mind in situations where what she believes or intends or desires seems not to be rationally connected with how she acts. I take Richard Moran’s 2001 account of self-knowledge as the basis for my argument that self-deception and akrasia, in particular, are better explained this way than as irrationalities unconnected with self-knowledge. Moran’s account is written from the first-person perspective of the active agent, conceived as asymmetric with the third-person perspective. It sets out authority and estrangement as conceptual opposites. Estrangement, Moran argues, is usually caused by our ‘burying’ some thought that we find unacceptable: that is, by rendering it in some way unconscious. We can also be estranged from our attitude when we can think about it consciously, on Moran’s account, by knowing it only theoretically, rather than immediately, for ourselves. Because she is estranged in some way from her real reason for her belief or intention, the subject suffers an unavoidable lack in her wholehearted knowledge of why she has the attitude, causing her to act with a degree of passivity concerning it. The passivity reduces her capacity actively to control her decision to believe that p or to do a on the basis of reasons. The consequence is that her self-ascription, although agential, is not fully self-determined. In both cases it has only third-person authority; she has failed to achieve normal, first-person authority over it.
Having defended Moran’s account against deflationary objections, I then argue that estrangement renders all self-deceived self-ascriptions, all serious akratic self-ascriptions, and many everyday akratic self-ascriptions necessarily less than fully self-determined; that the relevant acts that follow are therefore necessarily to some degree psychologically unfree and thus that they have third-person rather than first-person authority.

▼ This thesis is about basic self-knowledge, our knowledge of
particular facts about our own actions, attitudes, and sensory
states. It focuses on our knowledge of particular explanatory
facts about our own actions and attitudes and defends a
particular interrogative theory of such knowledge, according to
which our knowledge of such facts about our own actions and
attitudes is arrived at by resolving related practical questions
about our own actions and attitudes. It consists of four related
essays.
Essay one, "Introspection Without Inferentialism", argues against
the view that a belief is rational only if it is based on
sufficient reasons for so believing. It argues that beliefs about
our own attitudes and explanations thereof can be rational even
though they are not based on sufficient reasons for so believing.
This conclusion clears the way for alternative theories of how we
arrive at rational beliefs about our own actions and attitudes,
like the theory to be defended in the third and fourth essay.
Essay two, "Actions, Reasons, and Becauses", is about the
relation between two different kinds of explanations of our own
actions and attitudes: reason explanations and psychologi- cal
explanations. It argues on broadly linguistic grounds that reason
explanations are a kind of psychological explanation and are
therefore not a distinct kind of rational explanation. A
consequence of this conclusion is that questions about how we
arrive at knowledge of partic- ular reason explanations can be
treated as a special case of how we arrive at knowledge of
psychological or rational explanations more generally.
Essay three, "Knowing Why", is about our knowledge of particular
explanatory facts about our own actions and attitudes. It argues
against the view that our knowledge of par- ticular rational
explanations of our own actions and attitudes is inferential and
defends an alternative theory according to which such knowledge
is non-inferential. According to the alternative theory, our
knowledge of particular rational explanations of our own actions
and attitudes is arrived at by resolving related practical
questions about our own actions and atti- tudes. I argue that the
latter theory provides a better explanation than an inferential
theory of observed self and other symmetries concerning knowledge
of particular rational explanations of our actions and
attitudes.
Essay four, "Interrogative Theories of Introspection", develops
the theory defended in essay three in more detail and argues that
it offers a plausible general theory of how we arrive at
knowledge of particular facts about our own actions and
attitudes. It explicates three distinct interrogative theories of
introspection and argues that a theory on which we can arrive at
knowledge of particular facts about our actions and…

▼ The initial research questions for this practice-based doctoral research project was to ask, "Is it possible to develop a more confident, self-conscious creative voice able to articulate one's identity more clearly through the making of handmade artefacts?"; this thesis applies the methodologies of autoethnography and pedagogy to consider an answer. My original contribution to knowledge through this enquiry is the identification of the ways in which the exploration of identity through autoethnographic, creative and pedagogic methods encourages an expanded field of self-knowledge, self-confidence and sense of creative self.

▼ Degree awarded: Ph.D. Philosophy. The Catholic University of America
This dissertation presents a comprehensive analysis of Thomas Aquinas's theory of self-knowledge, examining each of the four kinds of self-knowledge he identifies: (1) actual perception of one's existence (actual self-awareness); (2) habitual self-awareness; (3) apprehension of the soul's nature; and (4) the judgment of this apprehension in light of divine truth. Broadly speaking, it contends that Thomas is attentive to experienced phenomena and provides precise and thoughtful analyses of phenomena such as bodily consciousness, implicit and explicit awareness of oneself as subject, unified perception of the self as a single subject, and scientific knowledge of the soul's nature. Moreover, his explanation of self-knowledge is consistent with the principles of his general theory of knowledge, while it also takes into account the unique characteristics of an act of knowledge wherein the knower is the known, and integrates both Augustinian and Aristotelian principles. Thus Thomas's comments on self-knowledge constitute a carefully nuanced doctrine with significant implications for both his theory of knowledge and his explanation of human subjectivity.
The first chapter examines the doctrine of two of his main sources, Augustine and Aristotle, while placing special emphasis on the way that difficulties of interpretation of texts in both these thinkers helped shape Thomas's own conception of self-knowledge. It then reviews chronologically his major texts on self-knowledge, while examining them for possible doctrinal developments and highlighting significant systematic problems for consideration in the thematic discussions of the following chapters.
The second chapter analyzes in detail the first type of self-knowledge – the soul's awareness of its individual existing self, focuses on the problem of its content and the mode in which it is achieved, and argues that according to at least one definition of "intuition," Thomas is defending a theory of intuitive self-awareness.
The third chapter investigates the second type of self-knowledge – the soul's habitual self-awareness through its own presence to itself – and argues for the existence of a Thomistic account of implicit actual self-awareness.
The fourth chapter examines the third and fourth kinds of self-knowledge and reviews F.-X. Putallaz's argument that reditio completa constitutes a fifth type of self-knowledge.
Lastly, the fifth chapter studies the implications of Thomas's theory of self-knowledge for his view of human nature. It returns to the commentaries on the De anima and Liber de causis to argue that habitual self-knowledge is essential to immaterial being, and that Thomas's discussion of habitual and actual implicit self-knowledge constitutes a psychological approach to the nature of human personhood which complements his much better-known metaphysical definition of personhood.

▼ I deliver an account of ‘practical knowledge’; the
knowledge we have of our own intentional actions. Part One introduces the target notion by describing three philosophically interesting features it appears to have (Ch. 1) and dismisses two broad approaches to understanding it – a ‘consciousness-based’ and an ‘inferentialist’ approach (Ch. 2). A third approach is thus motivated: ‘Intentionalist’ accounts of practical
knowledge see practical
knowledge as somehow constituted by the agent’s intention.
Part Two considers and rejects a version of Intentionalism which I call Cognitivist Intentionalism – CI. Cognitivist Intentionalists think of intentions as a kind of belief. Practical
knowledge is constituted by intention in whatever way ordinary
knowledge is constituted by belief, but it is a special kind of
knowledge because its constituting attitude is special. I dismiss two versions of CI, showing them to be internally problematic (Ch. 3). I then argue that intentions are not propositional attitudes (Ch. 4), thus ruling out any version of CI – if intentions were beliefs they would have to be propositional attitudes.
Part Three considers the remaining options for Intentionalism. According to Non-Cognitivist Intentionalism - NCI - practical
knowledge is constituted by intentions, which are not a kind of belief, just in case they are executed. NCI happily accommodates practical knowledge’s philosophically interesting features. But it is hard to see why executing an intention should constitute knowing, and how a kind of propositional
knowledge could be constituted by a non-propositional attitude, which Chapter Four argued intentions to be. Chapter Six develops NCI into the stronger NPI - Non-Propositionalist Intentionalism. In NPI the non-propositional character of intentions is central. Practical
knowledge is a kind of propositional
knowledge which is constituted by a non-propositional attitude; a kind of
knowledge which is not constituted by belief. I explain how this can be.

▼ The focus on how one is behaving, feeling, and thinking, provides a powerful source of
self-
knowledge. How is this
self-
knowledge utilized in the dynamic reconstruction of autobiographical memories? How, in turn, might autobiographical memories support identity and the
self-system? I address these questions through a critical review of the literature on autobiographical memory and the
self-system, with a special focus on the
self-concept,
self-
knowledge, and identity. I then outline the methods and results of a prospective longitudinal study examining the effects of an identity change on memory for events related to that identity. Participant-rated memory characteristics, computer-generated ratings of narrative content and structure, and neutral-observer ratings of coherence were examined for changes over time related to an identity-change, as well as for their ability to predict an identity-change. The conclusions from this study are threefold: (1) when the rated centrality of an event decreases, the reported instances of retrieval, as well as the phenomenology associated with retrieval and the number of words used to describe the memory, also decrease; (2) memory accuracy (here, estimating past behaviors) was not influenced by an identity change; and (3) remembering is not unidirectional – characteristics of identity-relevant memories and the life story predict and may help support persistence with an identity (here, an academic trajectory).

▼ Diabetes is a permanent disease in which the human body‟s cells either do not respond properly to insulin or insulin production is insufficient. If the disease is not treated well and on time, it can lead to severe health problems like heart disease, blindness, failure of kidney, and amputations of the lower extremity. Therefore, this chronic disease needs dietary control, physical exercise and insulin management.
However, among people in the developing countries like Ethiopia, permanent diseases are growing to be causes of death. These problems are becoming worse due to the scarcity of specialists, practitioners and health facilities. In Ethiopia, there has been observed a threat of increased diabetes prevalence and the number of death rates imputed to diabetes reached above 21,000 in 2007.
In an effort to address such problem, this study attempts to design and develop a prototype
self-learning
knowledge-based system that can provide advice for physicians and patients to facilitate the diagnosis and treatment of diabetic patients. To this end,
knowledge is acquired using both structured and unstructured interviews from domain experts which are selected using purposive sampling technique from Black Lion Hospital Diabetes Center. Relevant documents analysis method is also followed to capture explicit
knowledge. Then, the acquired
knowledge is modeled using decision tree that represents concepts and procedures involved in diagnosis and treatment of diabetes and production rules are used to represent the domain
knowledge and
knowledge-based system is developed using SWI Prolog editor tool. It uses backward chaining which begins with possible solutions or goals and tries to gather information that verifies the solution.
Moreover, in testing and evaluating the prototype system eighteen patients‟ history are selected in order to test the accuracy of the prototype system and also for ensuring whether the prototype system satisfies the requirements of its end-users or not. Thus, the overall total performance of the prototype system is 84.2%. The prototype system achieves a good performance and meets the objectives of the study. However, in order to make the system applicable in the domain area for diagnosis and treatment of diabetes additional study is needed like updating the rules in the
knowledge base of the system automatically, incorporating a well designed user interface and a mechanism of NLP facilities.

▼ The purpose of this thesis is to examine various attempts to disarm the externalist threat to self-knowledge. That threat is engendered by a certain causal theory of meaning and reference, which suggests that empirical investigations may be required to know the contents of our own thoughts. It is claimed, then, that direct, non-inferential self-knowledge of our own mental states, is not possible if externalism is true. The leading compatibilist strategies that attempt to reconcile these apparently conflicting theses are explored and criticized. I conclude by offering what I take to be the essential features of a more successful compatibilist strategy.

▼ Perceptual experience, and visual experience in particular, is often held to be 'transparent' in that when you try to focus on your experience you find that you can only focus on the subject matter of your experience. For example, when you look at your hand and try to focus on your visual experience of it, it is natural to admit that the only thing you find yourself able to focus on is your hand. But, of course, hands and visual experiences are two quite different things. In this way your experience, but not your hand, is transparent to you. In the dissertation I discuss the so- called transparency of experience at length. The first half of the book aims to make the idea of transparency of philosophically precise. The results of this section of the book generate an understanding of transparency which differs in important ways from how transparency is typically understood in the literature. The second half of the book utilizes this understanding of transparency to query the philosophical significance of transparency. In this portion of the book I argue that transparency is not very illuminating when it comes to questions concerning the nature of perceptual experience. Most philosophers who write about transparency disagree with this and the reason for this is that most philosophers have a mistaken understanding of transparency. When one understands transparency properly, it is clear that the truth of transparency would have no direct impact on what we should say about the metaphysics of perceptual experience. I then argue that transparency is significant from an epistemological point of view. The basic thought I elaborate on is that if our perceptual experiences are transparent then they are first-personally elusive in the sense that when we, the subjects of experience, go to look for our perceptual experiences they are nowhere to be found. Thus transparency raises a number of puzzles concerning our ability to think and know about our own perceptual experiences given their elusiveness. After raising these puzzles I propose a solution to them which treats our understanding of visual experience as theoretical, rather than as something which is given to us introspectively.

▼ Purpose: The main purpose of this study is to examine the
knowledge, attitude and behavior of the general public towards choosing to use
self-paid special materials.
Method: The
subject of this study is the general public and information is collected through surveys. A total of 545 surveys were recovered, with 530 effective surveys, the effective sample response rate being 97.25%. Statistical programming software including Excel 2016, R software and SPSS 24.0 are used for information processing and statistical analysis in conducting and analyzing Cronbachâs alpha factor, descriptive analysis, Independent-Samples T Test, One-way Anova, Chi-square Test, Pearson Product-Moment Correlation, Multiple Linear Regression and Multiple Logistic Regression.
Research findings: The results of this study show that there is a significant difference in
knowledge in terms of gender, age, total household income, whether outpatient medical attention was within a year, whether special materials have been used at the friendsâ and familiesâ own expense and whether private commercial medical insurance have been purchased; there is a significant difference in attitude in terms of whether special materials have been used at the friendsâ and familiesâ own expense; there is a significant difference in behavior in respect of gender, age, district of residence and occupation; there is a positive correlation between
knowledge and behavior.
Conclusion: This study has found that in terms of
self-paid special materials, friends and familiesâ
knowledge and user experiences are the main factors affecting the decision to use special materials at oneâs own expense, while medical effectiveness, quality and safety are the main factors of which the general public is concerned with in choosing to purchase special materials at their own expense.

▼ Monthly breast
self-examination (BSE) is an extremely important part of health care for all women in every stage of life as a primary tool in the prevention of breast cancer. The purpose of this study was to determine the
knowledge and practice of BSE among women at a private clinic in Zimbabwe. A non-experimental cross-sectional descriptive research design was used. The accessible population was one hundred women admitted to the selected private clinic. Data collection was done using a questionnaire which consisted of three parts: socio-demographic characteristics,
knowledge about BSE and practices of BSE. Data obtained was analysed using EPI INFO version 3.3.2. Results showed that respondents were knowledgeable about breast cancer early warning signs and symptoms and BSE. About 28% of the respondents were aware of when to initiate BSE and 74% performed BSE, but their practice was poor. Educational materials should be freely available at hospitals
and schools to enhance BSE awareness.

▼ Taking Nietzsche's ethical affirmation of the value of power as a starting point, I set out to show that virtue can be understood in terms of what kind of
self-knowers we are. By identifying moral features within several examples where we observe Nietzsche praising and criticizing various behaviors, I describe the virtue of
self-
knowledge as one that exhibits the qualities of
self-
knowledge and
self-ignorance which facilitate life and the feeling of power. I go on to outline the limitations of this virtue while also defending Nietzsche against a relativist view of truth.

▼ Clinical instruction is an essential component of professional education in nursing and accounts for a significant portion of credits within baccalaureate nursing programs. Clinical instructors (CIs) are expected to have strong clinical knowledge as well as strong teaching skills. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of an online education program for increasing CIs’ perception of teaching self-efficacy and knowledge about the clinical teacher role.
A convenience sample of CIs (n = 32) at Queen’s University School of Nursing were recruited for this study. Over the span of seven weeks, participants completed self-paced online educational modules (Preceptor Education Program - PEP) available from the University of Western Ontario. A single sample pre-test, retrospective pre-/post-test research design was used. Participants completed teaching self-efficacy and teaching knowledge questionnaires pre-intervention (n=32) and post-intervention (n=21).
Mean teaching self-efficacy scores increased significantly from pre-test to post-test (t = 6.7, p < .001). Teaching knowledge scores increased significantly from pre-test to post-test (t = 4.1, p < .05).The online modules had a significant impact on CIs’ teaching knowledge and self-efficacy. Descriptive data regarding participants’ satisfaction with the PEP modules was gathered; clinical instructors for the most part completed the PEP modules and were very satisfied with them. This online mode of clinical instructor education appears to be a feasible, facilitative and an accessible way to provide ongoing professional development and education for clinical instructors at Queen’s University.

▼ In this thesis I propose an account of knowledge of one's own mental states. My goal is set on a unified transparency account of self-knowledge. It is unified, because the proposal will account for the generation of beliefs about mental states of all types, regardless of whether they are propositional, non-propositional, experiential or non-experiential. My account will thereby be applicable to knowledge of any mental state, from beliefs and desires to fears, hopes, and sensations such as pain. Moreover, it will be a transparency account because it holds on to Gareth Evans's (1982) observation that self-ascribing mental states is done by attending outwards instead of inwards. There is a sense in which we attend to the world when we find out whether we believe something, and my proposal aims to capture this intuition. The core idea I am exploring is the following: generally, when one produces a first-order mental state, one also forms a corresponding, dispositional second-order belief about that state. Both attitudes share elements of their production, which ensures reliability while retaining fallibility. For instance, when you form a belief 'there is a red car' by perceiving a red car, you also generate the dispositional belief 'I believe that there is a red car,' if everything goes right. I argue that almost all features that make self-knowledge special can be explained with this basic idea. The assumption that the production of a first-order mental state and a second-order belief about the state go hand in hand has surprising explanatory power. Moreover, there are at least no obvious reasons why the assumption should be ruled out. The upshot will be a view that we should take seriously as a contender for an explanation of self-knowledge. I will not be able to conclusively show that it is the best explanation, but I argue that it is one worth thinking about. The thesis is structured in three parts. The first part (chapters 1-3) focuses on the phenomenon of self-knowledge and the transparency idea. These chapters serve as the setup for my later proposed view. Chapter 1 and 2 discuss what exactly we want to explain when we say that we aim to explain self-knowledge. I thereby provide an overview of the conceptual landscape of self-knowledge and argue that we should understand the peculiarity of self-knowledge in terms of features of belief and belief-formation. Moreover, I commit myself to the view that the peculiarity has something to do with our cognitive access to mental states and relate that to the goal of a unified account of self-knowledge. Chapter 3 discusses how we ought to understand the other qualification of my goal: a transparency account of self-knowledge. I provide an overview of transparency accounts in the literature and lay out the path to avoid common problems of transparency accounts. In the second part (chapters 4 and 5) I propose the single process model of self-knowledge as a unified, transparency account of self-knowledge. I provide the core principles of the view and show how it explains the…

▼ In order to understand behavior change, it is important to understand self-belief change. People prefer to verify, and thus to have stable self-beliefs in order to maintain the perception that they know themselves well, or self-knowledge confidence. Explanations of self-belief change must take into account people's desire to maintain self-knowledge confidence. I offer a new perspective of self-belief change. According to this perspective, people's self-beliefs change when they can maintain self-knowledge confidence. I conducted two experimental studies to test this perspective. In the first study, participants received feedback that either verified or challenged one of their self-beliefs that they held with either certainty or uncertainty. Participants' self-knowledge confidence was bolstered when one of their certain self-beliefs was verified. In the second study, participants received feedback that challenged one of their self-beliefs that they held with either certainty or uncertainty. Some were also given feedback that verified a different one of their certain self-beliefs. When participants had one of their certain self-beliefs verified before they had one of their self-beliefs challenged, they were more likely to change their self-belief. In addition, participants were more likely to change a certain self-belief than an uncertain self-belief. These effects were mediated by the extent to which participants were open to accepting self-inconsistent information and weren't motivated to verify their self-belief that was challenged. I discuss the role of self-knowledge confidence in self-belief change. I also discuss implications for the perspectives of self-belief change that have been offered in the literature to date, and the extent to which self-belief changes last over time and across situations.

▼ [Truncated abstract] It is a commonplace that we often reason from the fact that an agent did not know she was doing something to the conclusion that they did not do that thing intentionally. In his account of intentional action, Aristotle raised this commonplace to the level of philosophical theory, making it part of the definition of intentional action, claiming that if an agent does not know what she is doing she cannot be doing that thing intentionally. It is widely believed that Aristotle was wrong about this, but the intuition that there is an important connection between what an agent knows or believes when she acts and the question of whether she acts intentionally remains. In this thesis I attempt to uncover the truth behind this intuition and provide an adequate account of the relation between intentional action and an agent's knowledge of what she is doing. Arriving at an adequate account will involve learning from the mistakes of previous attempts. Thus, in Chapter 1 I examine Aristotle's claim that if an agent does not know what she is doing she cannot be doing that thing intentionally. I argue that there is an inherent tension in Aristotle's account of intentional action between his commitment to this claim about the agent's knowledge and his commitment to a particular account of the causal-psychological antecedents of intentional action. Since many contemporary accounts of intentional action share this Aristotelian assumption about the casual-psychological antecedents of action, we should expect to find that these accounts face similar difficulties in accommodating similar claims about the connection between intentional action and an agent's knowledge of what she is doing.
In Chapter 2 I examine Elizabeth Anscombe's claim that an action is not intentional if an agent gives the answer 'I was not aware I was doing that' or 'I was aware I was doing that but only because I observed it' in response to the question 'Why?'. I argue that Anscombe has been largely misunderstood in the contemporary debate. In response to this misunderstanding, I develop an interpretation of Anscombe's account of practical knowledge by paying close attention to her discussion of practical reasoning in the second half of her influential work Intention and connecting this to her earlier discussion of the question 'Why?'. Many of Anscombe's insights are taken up in the account of our ability to know what we are doing without observation that I offer in Chapter 4...

▼ This essay concerns an important intersection of the philosophy of mind and epistemology: the connection between intentionality and
self-
knowledge. "Intentionality" is a philosopher's term of art used to refer to a system's ability to represent something. In this essay, we will be concerned with the ability of minds to represent the world. The concept of
self-
knowledge is more familiar than the concept of intentionality; before any philosophy, we are all acquainted with the idea that we know our own minds in a way that others cannot. I do not have to hear what I say, read my words, observe my behavior, and make inferences based on that evidence to know what I think, although I must do these things to know what you think. Each of us knows what we think in a way that others do not.

▼ In this thesis, I present a view according to which folk psychology is not only used for predictive and explanatory purposes but also as a normative tool. I take it that this view, which I delineate in chapter 1, can help us account for different aspects of human agency and with solving a variety of puzzles that are associated with developing such an account. My goal is to examine what it means to act as an agent in a human society and the way in which the nature of our agency is also shaped by the normative constraints inherent in the common understanding of agency that we share with other agents. As I intend to demonstrate, we can make significant headway in explaining the nature of our capacity to express ourselves authoritatively in our actions in a self-knowing and self-controlled manner if we place this capacity in the context of our social interactions, which depend on a constant exchange of reasons in support of our actions. My main objective is to develop a promising account of human agency within a folk-psychological setting by mainly focusing on perspectives from the philosophy of action and mind, while still respecting more empirically oriented viewpoints from areas such as cognitive science and neuroscience. Chapter 2 mainly deals with the nature of self-knowledge and with our capacity to express this knowledge in our actions. I argue that our self-knowledge is constituted by the normative judgments we make and that we use these judgments to regulate our behaviour in accordance to our folk-psychological understanding of agency. We are motivated to act as such because of our motive to understand ourselves, which has developed through our training as self-knowing agents in a folk-psychological framework. Chapter 3 explores the idea that we develop a self-concept which enables us to act in a self-regulating manner. I distinguish self-organization from selfregulation and argue that we are self-regulating in our exercises of agency because we have developed a self-concept that we can express in our actions. What makes us distinct from other self-regulating systems, however, is that we can also recognize and respond to the fact that being such systems brings us under certain normative constraints and that we have to interact with others who are similarly constrained. Chapter 4 is mainly concerned with placing empirical evidence which illustrate the limits of our conscious awareness and control in the context of our account of agency as a complex, emergent social phenomenon. Finally, chapter 5 deals with the way in which agentive breakdowns such as self-deceptive inauthenticity fit with this account.

▼ The focus of this Leadership Action Project is to explore how the ethical will can inspire authentic leadership. Authentic Leadership theory is predicated on the growth of self-knowledge and self-awareness in a leader. These twin notions, developed through practical experience and lifelong reflection, inform a leader’s legacy of values, beliefs, and behavior. Due to the immediacy of daily challenges, modern leaders often lack the presence of mind to reflect on their crucible experiences and practical wisdom. As a result of this lack of contemplation, these leaders do not extract as much self-knowledge and self-awareness from their personal ethical legacies. The ethical will, a document designed to articulate an author’s values and life experiences as a legacy for others, can be a practical medium for inspiring authentic leadership. The research findings inform a set of recommended best processes for inspiring authentic leadership through writing an ethical will.

▼ According to temporal
self-appraisal theory, people evaluate themselves in the past in a way that makes them feel good about themselves in the present. In line with this theory, studies have shown that people believe their personality has changed more in the past than it will change in the future. This thesis investigated whether episodic memory plays a role in one's temporal
self-appraisal. A person with developmental amnesia and episodic memory impairment (H.C.) was compared with groups of age-matched controls on tasks assessing their personality traits and social competence in the present, the past, and the future. H.C. and controls reported that their personality has changed more in the past five years than it will change in the next five years and rated their present selves as more socially competent than their past selves. The findings suggest that temporal
self-appraisal does not require one to revisit experiences in episodic memory.

externalistas do autoconhecimento.
The aim of the thesis is to investigate the formation of interiority from an externalist approach. The processes by which the self is constituted are considered to be associated with the development of the first-person perspective. Adopt a first-person perspective is to become able to refer to yourself and know your own mental and bodily states. Self-awareness and self-knowledge were traditionally subsumed under the idea of Descartes first person authority. According to the Cartesian view, we would have preferred and non-empirical to our mental states that would be expressed by a knowledge access. The central thesis of externalism asserts, instead, that the content of mental states consists in part by relationships with the environment. The adoption of the externalist thesis calls into question the Cartesian assumption that we have privileged access to the contents of our thoughts, thus restricting the authority of the first person. The perceptual externalism Davidson, for example, offers a ternary I-interpreter-world solution to the origins of self. Davidson's thesis is presented as reconciling the self and the central ideas of externalism. Are presented two models of external genesis of I: 1) ecological models that propose a development of a sense of self as…

▼ This pilot study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of a web-based self-management intervention in patients with heart failure. The study consisted of two phases including developing the web-based application and examining its feasibility in a group of heart failure patients. The results of this study were consistent with the current literature which has failed to show the benefits of web-based interventions for chronic disease self-management. In the current thesis, therefore, issues influencing the effectiveness of the web-based interventions were analysed. Recommendations for improving effectiveness of the web-based applications were also provided.

▼ Personal informatics (PI) technologies allow unprecedented opportunities to track and analyze complex data about ourselves. However, a concern is that these technologies can make normative assumptions about user goals and ideal outcomes. Such assumptions could be especially problematic for Affective PI, as there is a risk that technologies which reflect implicit goals for users be more positive or reduce stress could ironically decrease well-being (Mauss et al., 2011). Furthermore, users could actively avoid PI data if they feel unable to meet the demands of the system (Duval & Wicklund, 1972), running counter to the view that users will engage data for beneficial insights (Kersten-van Dijk et al., 2017). We tested whether Affective PI systems that reflect goals for particular emotion outcomes (Improvement) have counterproductive effects for well-being and user engagement. These outcomes were contrasted against systems that instead reflect goals for Self-Knowledge, a top user interest (Hollis et al., 2018). Study 1 examined the effects of implicit goals in the context of an automatic stress detection and feedback system used during an exam. Participants viewed instructions that either describes the system goal as stress reduction (Improvement), stress reduction with a relaxation strategy (Self-Efficacy), accurate self-knowledge (Self-Knowledge), or saw no system goal (Control). Study 2 was a 21-day field study during which participants used a manual emotion-tracking web app that either emphasized a goal of increased positivity (Improvement), a goal of accurate self-knowledge (Self-Knowledge), or only completed pre-post surveys (Control). For each study, participants completed measures of well-being and engagement with the experimental systems. Across both studies, there were no significant condition differences in well-being. However, participants in the Self-Knowledge conditions of both studies considered themselves significantly more successful at achieving the system goals. As a result, Self-Knowledge participants were also more engaged with the stress- and emotion-tracking systems. Unlike prior work showing the ironic effects of emotional positivity goals, we show such negative impacts do not occur in this real-world context. We discuss these results with design implications for self-tracking systems and deepen the theoretical understandings of how users engage with PI.

▼ Abstract
Humanizing brands is an essential domain of current branding as it enhances the visibility of a brand by connecting consumers to the brand, thus contributing to strong brand equity. The term humanize used in this dissertation is not limited to brands with anthropomorphic characters, such as the M&M’s characters. Used in this context, the term also includes the ways in which consumers attribute a brand to be “close to me,” “like me,” and a “partner.”
Although the research of customer-based brand equity has been well-documented over the past twenty-five years, limited attention has been given to examining the differential effect of brand favorability in forming a self-brand connection. Even more scarce are studies on the antecedents and indicators of brand betrayal. Further, up-to-date research is mostly silent as to whether temporal focus and temporal distance influence a brand’s ability to serve as a means of reflecting the consumer’s selves. To fill up these research gaps, this dissertation reports four research articles. More than two thousand samples were collected from Finland, India, and the US to examine the conceptual frameworks.
First, this dissertation contributes to the literature on self-brand connection by articulating the effect of self-presentation by brand on self-brand connection. Second, it contributes to the literature of self-congruence, seen from the temporal perspective. Third, it adds to the brand betrayal literature by examining consumer anthropomorphize tendency and actual high-arousal positive states as the antecedents. It further explains the indicators of brand betrayal, consisting of failure severity and inferred negative motive. In term of managerial implications, the findings contribute to (1) the one-on-one marketing approach to branding, (2) incorporating consumer’s selves into branding considerations, and (3) assessing brand betrayal in a negative brand relationship.
Tiivistelmä
Brändien inhimillistäminen on keskeinen alue vallitsevassa brändien tutkimuksessa, sillä inhimillistämällä lisätään brändin näkyvyyttä kytkemällä kuluttajat brändiin, mikä osaltaan vahvistaa brändipääomaa.

▼ For several years, knowledge has been treated as a key successful resource in business and management. As knowledge management has been researched in various research domains, academics in project management have been also interested in the potential role of knowledge management. The aim of the research is to explore the usefulness and potentiality of knowledge management as well as to confirm the influencing elements of knowledge sharing within project-based organisations. This research implemented a qualitative research method which prompted an in-depth understanding of individual members’ perceptions towards knowledge sharing in project teams. In order to fulfil the methodological objective, the data were collected by using semi-structured interviews with 26 project managers from five project-based firms. The grounded theory method was adopted as the data analysis technique of this study. It allowed the researcher to explore and analyse the individuals’ perceptions of knowledge sharing and knowledge management. As a result, this study suggests four potential influencing factors of knowledge sharing, which are trust, relationship, motivation, and self-efficacy. The research data show that trust plays a role as a basic currency between members to share knowledge. Positive and affirmative relationships with other members will make it easy to share more knowledge and lead to better quality of knowledge. In this research, the informants also imply that members would be motivated to engage in knowledge sharing in respect to workload, culture, and remuneration. Lastly, one’s belief that one can achieve certain things -self-efficacy- is also important to create improved knowledge sharing between members in project teams. The research found that the majority of the companies managed their knowledge and carried out knowledge sharing activities. However, most of them did not recognise that their behaviours were relevant to knowledge management. In this research, the author suggests that confirming precedent knowledge management and knowledge sharing activities should occur prior to adopting new approaches. Furthermore, this research explores the potential influencing factors that play a role as either enablers or barriers. Thus, project managers and management should be cautious and ensure that influencing factors are equally balanced. Due to the nature of qualitative research methods, the sample size is relatively small compared to quantitative methods such as a survey and a questionnaire. As a result, future studies will consider more data in order to enhance further applicability and utilisation of the research.
