▼ A
qualitative analysis using a modified grounded theory approach was performed on 11 interviews from one representative of 11 marriages, including examples of both happy and unhappy marriages, in order to generate a participant-informed account of the enduring marriage. The heuristic model created through the
qualitative analysis was contrasted and compared to the existing body of literature on lasting marriage in order to identify areas of convergence and divergence. The
qualitative analysis identified a core category termed Emotional Anchoring and seven defining categories that thematically united all examples of lasting marriage in the present study. Results suggest that there are different ways of remaining married but that each example of a lasting marriage is a testament to participants’ ability to balance the competing demands of autonomy and connection in their union.

▼ Background
Pacific people are dying younger compared to other New Zealanders because of complications resulting from uncontrolled type 2 diabetes mellitus. Good diabetes control is achievable with early use of insulin because of its effectiveness, and proven long term benefits to quality of life. An understanding of how Samoan people with type 2 diabetes make their transition to insulin therapy will assist in understanding how insulin is perceived, which will inform health care professionals in their work with those diagnosed with diabetes.
Aim of Research
The aim of the research is to explore and describe how Samoan people with type 2 diabetes in New Zealand made the transition to insulin therapy for better glycaemic control.
Design
The Fonofale Model was used as the theoretical framework, from which to understand Samoan peoples' experiences. This research used a
qualitative descriptive
methodology. In-depth interviews were used to gather the stories of four Samoan participants over the age of 18 years diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. The data was analysed using thematic analysis.
Findings
Three major themes emerged from the analysis of the participants' stories. These were: living with diabetes, making the transition to insulin therapy and realisation. The findings led to the creation of the Ia Malu model, which describes the experiences of the participants in this study.
Conclusion
This study confirmed that there are immense challenges and struggles encountered by people with diabetes. Their adjustment to the illness as well as making the transition to using insulin takes time. As a result of this, it is fundamental for nurses/health care professionals to understand that this is the reality for these people, and they must therefore provide time for people to adjust.

▼ Millennials are leaving the Catholic Church in great numbers, despite being raised in the faith. When asked for the reason of disaffiliation, young adults do not blame sexual abuse scandals in the Church nor do they cite specific Catholic beliefs and teachings. Instead, they say that they have begun to ask why stay Catholic and what meaning does the Catholic faith provide in their lives. This search for meaning has caused them to leave their faith and seek it elsewhere. However, prominent figures in Catholic media, Emily Wilson and Fr. Mike Schmitz, use YouTube as a platform to reach out to young adults in the Catholic faith. This thesis aims to understand how the two Catholic YouTube influencers use eudaimonic messages in their videos to provide the meaning that young adults have been missing from their faith. Research has shown that eudaimonics provides a deeper sense of meaning for those who view media containing eudaimonic messages. This thesis will analyze the YouTube videos by the Catholic influencers for eudaimonic messages as well as analyze the comments left by viewers. This will help to evaluate how the influencers' messages may impact young adult viewers and their Catholic faith.

▼ This
qualitative phenomenological study involving in-depth interviews with seven educators in K-12 and higher education examines the role that the microblogging service Twitter plays in the formation and development of Personal Learning Networks (PLN) among educators. A double hermeneutic data analysis shows that Twitter plays a role in the formation and development of PLNs by allowing educators to; engage in consistent and sustained dialogue with their PLN, access the collective knowledge of their PLN, amplify and promote more complex thoughts and ideas to a large audience, and expand their PLN using features unique to Twitter. This research also examines the nature of a PLN and shows that participants believe their PLN extends beyond their Twitter network to encompass both face-to-face and other ICT mediated relationships. Secondary research questions examine how Twitter differs from other social networking tools in mediating relationships within a PLN, what motivates an educator to develop a PLN, how trust is established in a PLN, what the expectations of reciprocity are within a PLN, and what is the nature of informal learning within a PLN.

▼ Regional land use planning in the Yukon has a long and unfortunate history of failed
efforts. Under Chapter 11 of the Yukon First Nations Umbrella Final Agreement, a new
process for planning has been in place since 1993. Through
qualitative, interview-based
research, I explore possible factors that either hinder or facilitate successful planning. I
used the North Yukon regional land use planning effort as a case study example of the
first plan to be successfully approved in Yukon history. A number of challenges resulting
from poorly defined roles and responsibilities caused notable struggles and conflict
throughout the process, but fortunately, strong political support and micro and meso –
level organization, combined with a solid team of skilled and dedicated people, allowed
the process to ultimately succeed. Lessons learned and recommendations for future
regional planning initiatives are discussed.

Translated into French in 2017, sociologist Arlie Russell Hochschild’s seminal work, The Managed Heart (1983), elaborated the concept of “emotional labor” which has subsequently given rise to studies in several disciplinary fields and contexts and which is central to the emotional demands identified by Gollac & Bodier (2010) as one psychosocial risk factor. As a place rich in emotions where the “extra-ordinary” (illness, suffering and death) is an everyday experience, the hospital is…

Qualitative methods aim to describe, understand and deepen an observed phenomenon. Our objectives are both methodological and therapeutic. We illustrate the contribution of qualitative methods in research from three qualitative studies. These studies will jointly explore the issue of care and especially the perception of psychiatric care from adolescents, their families and caregivers. The first study is a metasynthesis - systematic review and analysis of qualitative literature- on anorexia nervosa in adolescence. The second study will focus on the use of the photographic tool and its effectiveness in qualitative research in adolescent psychiatry. This qualitative study will explore the functioning and family interactions around food and meals using Photo-elicitation. Finally, the third qualitative research will explore the perceived efficacy of care among adolescents receiving a treatment for school refusal, and their parents. These three studies enable us to discuss the contribution of qualitative methods in adolescent psychiatry care research and also the need of developing such methods in the field of clinical research in public health.

▼ This research addresses the following questions: how do successful professionals cultivate boundary-spanning relationships to develop professional goods; and what lessons can be drawn from their successes? This study uses grounded theory to interpret
qualitative interview data from four expert networkers to help demonstrate how successful people in various industries build relationships — and what characteristics these successful networkers have in common. Using grounded theory, five key themes emerged: uncertainty reduction, ingratiation, reciprocity, mentoring relationships and the importance of follow-up. The study of networks has a well-developed body of surrounding literature; however, the current research does little to address how individual actors successfully build the relationships upon which networks are based. Therefore, this
qualitative research into the characteristics shared by successful networkers is a positive contribution to the body of knowledge concerning social network theory — and will serve as a guide for those wishing to expand their personal and business networks.

qualitative analysis that was informed by both grounded theory and ethnographic content analysis (ECA) conducted through fifteen open-ended interviews with Chinese citizens and content analysis of government documents and media coverage that pertain to environmentalism. During the data collection and analysis process, the researcher considered the cultural landscape of China and reflected on how the media, Chinese spirituality, and communication patterns affect the conceptualization of environmentalism by citizens. This research found that public awareness of environmental sustainability is influenced by a social hierarchy of needs, philosophical legacies, allegiance to authority, and China‟s global position. Consequently, this research uncovered the importance of cultivating cultural awareness when non-Chinese citizens approach the topic of environmentalism in China.

▼ A preliminary literature review of mental models and
the quantum organisation clearly indicated a gap, particularly in
the South African context. The gap was evident on two levels:
literature fails to agree on existing definitions and there is
little guidance on research
methodology in the context of
complexity and leadership. The aim of this study was to explore and
describe the form and function of leaders’ mental models in a
complex environment. A postmodernist
qualitative methodology as
theoretical framework and constructivism as research paradigm were
employed. It was important not to be restricted and limited by a
specific method. Therefore a constructivist grounded theory was
used to navigate in a pragmatic manner towards answers which could
best describe and interpret findings in response to the initial set
of research questions. Purposive sampling was used and the
population consisted of individual South African leaders and
academics that do research on and write extensively about the
constructs investigated. Data were obtained through intensive
semi-structured interviewing. Semi-structured interviewing implies
that only a few research questions were selected to guide the
interview, whereas the rest of the interview was a co-constructed
conversation, which yielded narratives with rich data that were
systematically analysed through computer-assisted coding. An
initial conceptual framework was thus created and used to
substantiate the findings by means of a second literature review.
It is concluded that the quantum organisation, being a leader in a
complex environment, the dynamics of the mental models and the
complex environment itself collectively represent a constellation
of complex adaptive sub-systems, affecting one another in an
interdependent manner and co-evolving accordingly. The conceptual
framework describes the mindful sense-making process of a leader in
a complex environment, consisting of a) an active acceptance of the
current reality, b) catalytic questioning, c) letting go of, d)
knowing that not knowing the solution, e) trusting what they do
know, f) observing the actuality of unfolding patterns and g)
realisation. Criteria for rigour, authenticity, trustworthiness and
credibility were applied and demonstrated. The findings provide
insight into the form and function of a leader’s mental models in
the complex South African context. The practical contribution of
this study specifically applies to the practice of leadership
development and coaching. In addition, this study contributes
methodologically to the field of mental model research by
demonstrating the appropriateness of a constructivist paradigm for
describing and interpreting the complexities of mental models of
leaders in a complex context. Recommendations and opportunities for
future research were also made.

▼ Over the past three decades, the HIV epidemic has
gained a stranglehold in sub-Saharan Africa, where 10% of the
world’s population comprises more than 60% of all people living
with the disease. Recent initiatives to boost prevention and
treatment interventions are beginning to yield modest but promising
results, as infection rates slowly start to stabilize. However,
continued improvement will require aggressive and unrelenting
efforts to prepare and equip a workforce for the tremendous
challenges that remain. The purpose of this critical ethnography
was to explore the impact of an intensive 6-month HIV/AIDS
education program on the lives of 24 Ugandan registered nurses and
nurse-midwives who worked at a large referral hospital. The study
began following completion of the course and involved participant
observation and semi-structured interviews for 18 weeks over a
2-year period. The findings are presented in this dissertation,
which consists of four published or publishable manuscripts along
with introductory and concluding chapters. The first paper
describes the impact of education on the personal, professional,
and social lives of the participants, and provides an account of
their new ways of viewing themselves as nurses, leaders, and
advocates. The second paper addresses ethical issues concerning the
conduct of research in international settings. The third paper
identifies the phenomenon of moral distress as it manifested in the
participants, and the effects of education on their ability to
transform practice and attitudes. The final paper examines the
congruence between the critical qualitative methodology used in the
study and the concept of cultural safety in the context of
international nursing research. The dissertation concludes with a
discussion of the crucial role of continuing professional education
for the development of a strong and responsive nursing workforce
that is prepared to contribute leadership and vision to addressing
the obstacles presented by HIV and AIDS. Dealing effectively with
the epidemic requires numerous interventions at various levels; the
potential synergies offered by a small investment in education may
have far-reaching effects. Finally, implications for nursing
practice are presented along with suggestions for further
research.

▼ Teachers face complex challenges as they transition from pre-service education to professional practice. However literature on teacher induction seldom addresses the needs of teachers in specific content areas and the literature on the induction process within art education is sparse. Literature about beginning art teachers shows the complex variety of teaching tasks facing beginning art teachers affects their ability to balance time and energy. Additionally the dissonance between the expectations of art educators and school environments causes many qualified, passionate teachers to leave the field. This points to the need for continued research on the experiences of beginning teachers. In this
qualitative study, I use sensory ethnographic maps of place and movement to discuss beginning art teachers’ changing habitation of school place and experiences during their first years on the job. Specifically, I consider how beginning art teachers (re)create their art rooms based on the needs of their curriculum, work to navigate others’ appropriation of the art room, their perceptions of time, and how they cope with the increase in students, supplies, and tasks which accompany a teaching position. I argue that art teachers are wayfaring learners—responsive wanderers mindfully reacting to their teaching environment and the chorus of elements that constantly contribute to their learning. In conclusion, this project, by closely examining beginning art teachers’ own accounts of their teaching experiences sheds new light on the neglected issues of the ways place and movement affect beginning art teachers’ experience of school places.

▼ We outline the basic principles of Q-Methodology and its current status in the study of social systems. Existing and ongoing research indicates that it bridges an important gap between qualitative and quantitative research by giving objective access to patterns of operative subjectivity in a community on a given issue. It is therefore easily allied to approaches such as critical realism and complexity that also attempt to transcend the qualitative quantitative divide. Mathematically it is allied to quantum theory rather than linear determinism, giving promising avenues for the systematic exploration of subjective-objective transitions such as the agency-structure problem in social theory. Q-Methodology makes valuable contributions to qualitative and quantitative research by providing new data and checking on unsupported speculation. It may be particularly relevant to ‘emerging’ economies where representation of research issues is discursively complex in comparison to that in ‘developed’ ones. Researchers still need to make informed decisions on whether to use it as a pattern analytic method or more, as the systematic study of subjectivity. Illustrative examples provide insight into its potential for innovative research in business and social science in Africa.

▼ The discourse on global affairs always draws attention to foreign policies, national interest and
militarization. Fashion as a softcore topic is not disconnected from the discussion of global
affairs and needs to be given similar attention, as issues in public diplomacy in relation to
national interest are discussed. Fashion has the ability to create an identity through the conscious
repetition of clothing, as there is a reproduction of personal, social and state values, where a
consistent identity can be constructed and reconstructed to represent the state well. These
conscious fashion choices help shape and send clear message of a state’s foreign policy to other
states and to the world. Fashion is therefore not a frivolous marginal activity vested in the
interest of only entertainers, but it is a cultural tool that could greatly enhance the image of the
state to have profound and important international dimensions. The research therefore seeks to
assess the role of fashion in global affairs. Qualitative methodology was adopted for the study
where primary data was gathered by interviewing specific individuals knowledgeable in fashion
and global affairs, whereas secondary data was collected from books, journal articles,
newsletters, magazines and materials on the internet relevant to the topic under discussion were
reviewed and analysed for the drawing of conclusions. The research concludes, that fashion
helps project a state’s image, values and people, to other states as well as the world, which
intends to seek admiration, and in the long run, build trust for cooperation and partnership.
Women are also able to draw out very critical issues pertaining to women in the society,
encourage and empower other women all through fashion. It recommends that, the domestic
fashion industries of varied states ought to be regarded as very important, which need the equal
support of the government, as it can go a long way to enhance the public diplomacy and cultural
diplomacy of states.

▼ Emerging educational researchers are often faced with significant challenges as they enter into and navigate the expansive qualitative research field. Growing evidence supports the claim that increased focus needs to be placed on paradigm and methodology in order for educational researchers to make informed choices, situate their research, and to justify their methodological choices. On a wider scale, there is a call for a collaborative research culture and paradigm dialog[ue] amongst researchers to strengthen the qualitative inquiry community. As a result, this study reports on the findings of a socio-constructivist, collaborative concept mapping activity that was conducted in a graduate level introduction to qualitative inquiry course as a means of paradigm dialogue. Results of the analysis reveal the significant role of social interaction and storytelling as a lens for understanding qualitative inquiry. The study also addresses limitations and potential of both to face-to-face and online concept mapping applications.

▼ This dissertation explores the experience of participating in collective protest. I performed an existential-phenomenological analysis of five participants’ in-depth accounts of their involvements participating in collective protest. I considered my interviewees’ discourse to be reflective of their lived, embodied experiences of being in protest with others. Participants each described distinct protesting experiences. I explored their accounts in relation to six basic aspects of existence: self, other, embodiment, time, space, and choice/freedom. From within these existential realms, participants’ accounts revealed five key existential themes of participating in collective protest: (1) Existential Crises and Activation; (2) Existential Magnification; (3) Existential Horizons; (4) Existential Stakes; and (5) Existential Time-Space. These themes emerged from the ways my participants discussed their experiences in contingent and concrete interrelationships with the six basic states of existence. I considered phenomenological similarities and departures across participants’ descriptions and uncovered 30 distinct modes, or manners in which they experienced their participation in embodied collective protest. My insights suggest that collective protests frequently emerge during periods of heightened cultural disorder. During such anxious times, many participants seek the company of others in collective protest to have their voices heard and to be with people who are similarly concerned. Participants discussed the importance of preserving and exercising their First Amendment rights to publicly communicate dissent in this way. My interviewees also described understandings that protesting is a potentially dangerous activity, but that the risks are assumed collectively. While protesting can be unsafe, this collective action pertains to individuals banding together to make an ethical statement addressing the sense that something bad is on the horizon. While in protest together, people often meet like-minded others, and sometimes these connections bond members in enduring activist communities. At the heart of participating in collective protest are individuals who make a personal choice to adventure out in public to demonstrate in communicative interaction with fellow citizens.

▼ Jürgen Habermas’ The Structural Transformation of the Public Sphere has been described as outdated and incompatible with 21st century democracies. Among other things, Habermas’ initial formulation excluded the state from the public sphere. Recently, a revised model of the public sphere has emerged that positions the state and other law-making bodies at its centre. Although some theorists have embraced this revised model, others continue to exclude the state or oversimplify its role. While some research has examined how parliaments fit into this revised model, no research has been published on this in a Canadian context. This thesis attempts to fill this gap by answering the research question: Does the Canadian House of Commons constitute a form of the public sphere?
To answer this question, the Canadian House of Commons is explored along three dimensions of the public sphere – structure, representation, and interaction. This system of classification conforms to the essential function and institutional criteria of classical theory and also accounts for revised models of the public sphere. Ultimately, this work argues that the Canadian House of Commons satisfies the structural and representational dimensions of the public sphere. Its interactional dimension, however, is found to be inconsistent with public sphere theory due to a lack of real deliberation and the pervasiveness of party politics.

Rezime Predmet empirijske i teorijske analize u
ovoj tezi predstavlja oblikovanje i promena subjektivnosti žena
Cilj
započeta izlaganjem i kritičkim preispitivanjem reprezentacija i
sredstva, i to u institucionalnom okruženju. To svakako nosi
drugom, empirijskom, delu teze detaljno ispitane. Na kraju uvodnog
dela rad je pozicioniran unutar aktuelnih debata oko reproduktivnih
pitanja.
aspekte društvenog okruženja i institucionalno-tehnološku praksu. I
pored svog potencijala ovog savremenog shvatanja, njemu nedostaju
određeni resursi specifično podešeni za analizu subjektivnosti,
kojoj s e u o vom r adu p rilazi i z perspektive prvog lica, kao i
njene telesne situiranosti. Zbog toga je uveden dodatni
fenomenološki teorijski okvir koji omogućava diferenciranu
konceptualnu rekonstrukciju otelovljenog iskustva subjekta. Pored
toga, u ovom teorijskom delu rada izvršeno je i dodatno teorijsko
situiranje unutar psihologije, kroz razmatranje dve relevantne
psihologije. Metodološko poglavlje sadrži refleksivni narativ same
autorke o izvedenom empirijskom istraživanju. Osim detaljnog
obrazlaganja svih relevantnih metodoloških odluka, u njemu se
preispituje uloga istraživača u svim aspektima istraživanja – od
izbora fenomena i formulisanja pitanja, do realizacije
istraživanja. Osnovni empirijski materijal na kome je zasnovana

▼ This dissertation interrogates the links between immigration, citizenship, and social inequality by exploring temporary migrants' lived experiences of social exclusion in Manitoba. Based within a provincial context that supports temporary migrants' transitions to permanent residency through the Provincial Nominee Program, I examine how the promise of permanent settlement and a two-step immigration process influences migration decisions and the lived experiences that follow. Also, this dissertation highlights the ways in which temporary migrants find ways to exercise agency as they negotiate a complex migration system that is designed to exclude them.
Drawing on twenty-six in-depth
qualitative interviews and informed by a narrative
methodology, I analyze accounts of temporary migrants who work in the hog processing industry in two rural communities. Using a theoretical lens informed by segmented labour market theory and citizenship theories, the dissertation reveals how processes of social exclusion are the outcomes of both labour market positions and legal exclusion from full membership in a nation-state. As a result, temporary migrants are positioned in an uncertain state of partial legal and social belonging. Theorizing the social effects of temporary migrants' location both in the labour market and in the complex matrix of legal statuses demonstrates the nuanced ways that temporary migrants understand how they can and do fit in Canadian society and make decisions based on such understandings.
A significant empirical finding from this research is that having options for permanent residency is not a panacea for temporary migrants' unequal and marginalized social locations. In fact, the promise of permanent residency can contribute to an imbalance of power where employers have control over the futures of temporary migrants and their families. Pervasive effects of non-permanent status persist long after transitions to permanent resident status and are compounded by social dimensions such as language, class, gender, and race to shape temporary migrants' ability to engage in Canadian society. My analysis reveals the ways in which government designations (legal status) lack the ability to entirely erase social markers, making it questionable whether such classifications can restructure the social interactions and experiences of temporary migrants.

▼ In the context of early childhood education, in England and internationally, ideas and practices of ‘readiness’ have been of interest within research, policy and practice for some time. Much critical research, scholarship and activism has focused on exploring developmental aspects of this phenomenon arguing for: more ‘appropriate’ standards of ‘readiness’ against which to judge children’s learning and development; closer relationships between schools, preschools and communities that produce culturally responsive concepts of ‘readiness’; and the critical examination of the relationship between early childhood and compulsory school education. Within this body of work there is significant emphasis on developing and articulating alternative ideas and approaches that can unsettle dominant, normalizing practices of teaching and learning. Within these critical explorations of ‘readiness’ however, there is an avenue of scholarship that, seemingly, is as yet unexplored – one that addresses the concept of ‘readiness’ itself and asks how it may be possible to conceptualize ‘readiness’ in a way that is consistent with, and responsive to, complex processes of teaching and learning. This is not just a shift in practice, or in policy narratives, but is an ontological and epistemological change – a reconceptualization of ‘readiness’ that takes as its starting point a fundamental assumption of the positive and productive force of difference, in learning and in life. This thesis explores the ontological and epistemological shifts required to move away from ideas of ‘readiness’ that attach progression to a mechanistically linear movement. It develops and articulates an approach that embraces the emergent and unpredictable nature of learning, from which a concept of ‘readiness’ emerges which works with open, non-linear and emergent dimensions of education as necessary aspects of the complex systems within which we work. The thesis works with the concept of a ‘diffractive methodology’, exploring the concept of ‘readiness’ through ideas and theories drawn from complexity theory, from the immanent philosophy of Deleuze, and Deleuze and Guattari, and through onto-epistemological ideas of materiality and the entanglement of matter and meaning explored in particular by Barad. Methodologically, this study works within the space opened up by recent developments within ‘post-qualitative’ approaches to research. Working with concepts of ‘sensation’ and ‘affect’ it engages critically with often taken for granted concepts and practices such as: assumptions concerning empirical/theoretical research; ideas of ‘data collection’ and ‘data analysis’; and the production of knowledge in and through experience. Deleuzian philosophy (among other influences) is approached in this methodological context as an open system, as opposed to a totalizing structure. Concepts including ‘sensation’ and ‘affect’ are approached as potentialities, the methodological value of which is affirmed through the ways in which they have been productively put to work in the…

▼ The purpose with this paper is to investigate and get deeper understanding of case studies about Swedish companies. I will focus on the way the case studies have been constructed, the purposes of the studies and how well the findings may be implemented to other contexts. I find this interesting because case studies are something that can benefit every company in other to in some way improve and streamline the business. The data used in this paper will be obtained from various case studies within the subject “Swedish companies” and therefore analyzed to draw conclusions. The findings from this study is that every case study is unique, and there is not one single, optimal way to construct a case study. One must take the purpose of the study into consideration and establish the study from this. However, there are common traits between case studies, such as the ways of obtaining data for the studies and the uniqueness of research question. How well the findings of a case study can be generalized to other contexts also depends on the uniqueness of the purpose of the study.

▼ Case studies are widely used across a lot of different subject areas, however there are a lot of questions about the use of it because of the doubt in its’ contribution to science and the quality of it. The purpose with this research paper is to define the case study and the characteristics required in it for it to be classified and recognized as a “good” case study. Findings reveal that case study is defined in many different ways depending on the area of subject it is presented in. A good case study is reliable, valid and is used as a qualitative research method and it contains a lot of depth in the investigated single case.

▼ My dissertation develops, extends, and experiments with theories of emergence to think ethico-politically about cultural productions, literacy practices, and pedagogies. Theoretically informed by process philosophy, new materialisms, and affect theories this dissertation focuses on three reading, writing, and walking research-creation events. The first research-creation event is a multi-participant marginalia project inspired by Friedrich Nietzsche’s ‘eternal return’ (an ‘affirmation’ that emerged during a walk). The second research-creation event is an in-school project with high school English students that centers on emergent publics, literacies, and ethico-political matters of concern that arose through walking and writing. The third research-creation event is a long-distance walking-writing post-card project that queers the relationship between walking, chance encounters, and the politics of saying yes to whatever turns up. I employ a more-than-representational approach to writing as a further engagement with theories of emergence and their relevance to qualitative research methodologies in the field of education.

▼ Renewable energy is on the verge of becoming a significant source of power generation and for many Americans, that will mean thinking and talking about energy technologies in new ways. Land intensive energies such as solar and green will compete more and more with aspects of our social world. This project focuses on the perception, acceptance, and discourse of renewable energy projects by examining the solar energy conversation in the San Luis Valley of Southern Colorado. This vast high-desert valley holds the excellent geographic conditions needed for the siting of large solar energy installations, but such projects continue to run into local resistance despite wide support for the idea both locally and nationally. This project uses Q
methodology to study residents’ perceptions of solar energy projects. There are few studies using this technique to approach perception of energy projects. The results of this study reveal important perspectives about consensus for solar energy grounded in drastically different discourses. The results of this study contribute to the greater academic literature regarding energy’s place in our society and offer tools for planners, energy geographers, and the communities themselves to make decisions regarding energy generation going forward.

▼ Unethical workplace behavior has long been a concern for organizations and a topic of interest for researchers. However, despite the vast body of research on the
subject, there seems to be no definitive consensus concerning the breadth of the content domain within unethical workplace behavior, what (if any) meaningful dimensions exist within the construct, and which forms of unethical behavior are most prevalent in the workplace (Kaptein, 2008). This lack of construct clarity may in part be due to the fact that much of the research literature has focused on individual subsets of unethical workplace behavior, either studying a single type of unethical behavior, like employee theft (Greenberg, 2002), or examining a specific type of worker, like marketing professionals (Akaah & Lund, 1994). Certain methodological limitations have also contributed to the issue of construct ambiguity, such as the use of inappropriate student samples and an overreliance on restrictive quantitative measurement instruments (Treviño, Nieuwenboer, & Kish-Gephart, 2014). I seek to address the weaknesses in past research and strengthen the current understanding of unethical workplace behavior by studying the construct using methodological strategies that have historically been underrepresented. In this study, I take an exploratory approach and examine the issue of unethical workplace behavior through a
qualitative lens by conducting a large-scale content analysis of first-hand reports of unethical workplace behavior using a diverse applied sample. The resulting typography divides unethical workplace behavior into three content categories: Type of Behavior, Type of Victim, and Type of Perpetrator. The Type of Behavior content category contains several new subcategories not included in past research, such as inadequate response to a reported workplace issue and ordering others to engage in illegal or unethical activity. By broadening the spectrum of the types of behaviors that encompass unethical workplace behavior, describing who is affected by it, and describing who is engaging in it, the present study paints a more complete picture of unethical behavior in the workplace. Future research efforts should incorporate the present study's findings into existing scales of unethical workplace behavior. Additionally, increased attention should be placed on inadequate response to a reported workplace issue and how to prevent it.

▼ How does social interaction take place within a fully online environment, and what tactics and techniques do users employ to present and manage impressions of self? Within a fully online social interaction site called Second Life, I conducted participant observations over the span of three months for a total of nearly thirty five hours, as well as open ended in-depth interviews with sixteen Second Life users. A dramaturgical analysis is employed to discover the tactics and techniques of the presentation of self and impression management which are utilized in the fully online environment of Second Life. I found that users heavily relied on the defensive practice of perfecting their performance, specifically through five key information carriers: their appearance, profile, displaying bodily control and technical proficiency, correcting chatting techniques, and proper usage of gestures. In addition, residents participated in two protective practices to aid other users in their performance. The first is tactful inattention, essentially turning a blind eye to performance errors, and the second is tactful attention, which is the practice of acknowledging a performance error by providing assistance on how to fix it while at the same time diffusing the gravity of the error. The results of the analysis show that online interaction can be studied with a dramaturgical perspective to uncover the intricacies of the mechanisms of social interaction.

▼ This
qualitative study explored teacher conceptualizations of creativity. Specifically, teachers??? general beliefs about creativity and regarding their own creative abilities as well as how those beliefs relate to their instructional practice in the classroom. Sixteen teachers enrolled in a Masters in Education program with a focus on either arts or English as well as one professor from each cohort participated in semi-structured interviews with the researcher. Data analysis revealed two themes throughout teachers??? beliefs of creativity. First was a focus on the individual in the creative process, and second was a focus on the interactions between individuals within a social context as having an influence on the creative process; an orientation to the self was also revealed throughout both themes. These two themes will be presented within teachers??? beliefs of the origins of creativity, how the context is related to creativity, sources of motivation for creativity, and sources of creative stifling. Teachers??? beliefs will be discussed in relation to past research and Western culture as well as in terms of the implications these beliefs have for educational practice.

▼ In 2015, the Millennial generation (adults ages 18 to 34 in 2015) surpassed Gen-X (35-50 in 2015) as the largest age cohort in the workforce (Fry, 2015). Millennials introduced unprecedented changes in the demographic makeup of the American population for employers to consider. They are more racially diverse than any other cohort. Moreover, Millennials grew up in the digital age, thus they have a higher level of comfort with technology than any other generation. As the youngest part of the millennial population grows older, more will be looking for full-time employment, and thus the proportion of the labor force for this cohort will only increase (Fry, 2015). Millennials are often portrayed as upper-middle class and white, despite the reality that this generation is more racially diverse than any other and only one third of Millennials have post-secondary education. This portrayal of Millennials is a part of a dominant narrative that relies on stereotypes that are primarily based on upper-middle class work. This thesis investigates the ways in which the dominant narrative is reified and challenged by Millennial workers in full-time positions. Particularly, I was interested in the socialization processes experienced by first-time Millennial employees in full-time positions from both blue and white collar industries. Using Jablin’s (1987) model of Organizational Assimilation, this study is primarily focused on the bridge between vocational/organizational anticipatory socialization and the encounter phases proposed within this theory. Using narrative analysis, data was collected using semi-structured interviews with members of the Millennial workforce within the first five years of full-time employment. Interviews revealed the ways in which Millennial experiences reinforce, challenge and/or transform the dominant narrative of the Millennial worker.

▼ Leading mathematics education scholars have called for different theoretical possibilities (Stinson & Walshaw, 2017) and broader considerations of what “counts” (D. B. Martin, Gholson, & Leonard, 2010) in mathematics education research. This study—situated at the intersections of statistics education, mathematics education, and
qualitative inquiry—responds to these calls through an intellectual exploration of Karen Barad’s (2007) readings of Niels Bohr’s philosophy–physics and her questions of what it might look like to do science while valuing both objectivity and posthumanist accounts of reality. The study considers how taking up data with different theories and methods in mathematics education research produces different knowledges and the ways this rethinking opens up different possibilities for school mathematics.
To bring clarity to the theoretical exploration, mathematics teaching and learning at the classroom level was examined. Two middle school mathematics teachers who taught a 10-week mathematics enrichment course Mathematics and Current Events were observed and interviewed. During the course, teachers and students researched provocative topics in the media and considered the ways in which mathematics interacts with how they understand the world. The course focused on the statistics that are presented by the media and the ways that citizens might use mathematics to make meanings of important problems. Observation and interview data were mapped to aspects of statistical literacy (e.g., Wild & Pfannkuch,1999) informing practice in middle grades classrooms and bringing questions forward for consideration about how critical dispositions of statistical thinking might be developed in middle grades mathematics classrooms.
The theoretical exploration of the diffraction (Barad, 2007; Haraway, 1992) of interpretivist and poststructuralist readings of the data illustrates that different theories and broader considerations in mathematics education research can open up important new spaces in the field of mathematics education research. Shifts in what is legitimized in the field of mathematics education research makes cracks in hardened places in the field that can provoke new questions and, in turn, new methods. In the end, different theories and ways of knowing allow diverse ways of doing science and broader views on what gets counted in knowledge production.
