[pt] O neoconcretismo inaugurou, no Brasil, a participação do espectador na arte e teve em Lygia Clark uma das artistas mais radicais entre seus integrantes, sendo ela a responsável em grande parte pelo legado deixado pelo movimento, tanto para a história da arte brasileira como para muitos dos artistas que surgiram no país depois da década de 1960. Neste trabalho, tentaremos mostrar a teoria por trás das obras de Lygia Clark, sua participação no movimento neoconcreto a o início de sua proposta de participação do espectador na obra através da série Bichos.

[en] Neoconcretism started spectator participation in art and had in Lygia Clark one of its most important and radical promoters. Lygia was, in great part, responsible for the legacy of neoconcretism for Brazilian art history and for the artists that came up after 1960. In this paper, we will try to show the theory behind Lygia s works, her participation in the movement and the beginning of her proposal for the spectator s participation with the series Bichos.

[pt] Este trabalho se propõe a pensar sobre os possíveis pontos de contato entre o neoconcretismo e o minimalismo, analisados a partir de duas formulações teóricas fundamentais sobre esses movimentos: as noções de não-objeto e objetos específicos, elaboradas por Ferreira Gullar e Donald Judd, respectivamente. Essas ideias buscavam conceituar o novo tipo de objeto de arte tridimensional, e nos dois casos consideravam uma superação dos meios artísticos tradicionais da pintura e da escultura. Apesar das semelhanças entre essas noções, a defesa dessa nova produção artística se fez, para cada grupo, em momentos nos quais a sua relação com a herança da história da arte europeia e a presença do modernismo se davam de formas distintas. A análise desses movimentos a partir da relação que estabeleceram com o modernismo, portanto, revela uma série de camadas textuais atreladas tanto à construção desses grupos de artistas enquanto movimentos, quanto à crítica e à história construída sobre eles - desde seu surgimento, até os dias atuais.

[en] This paper aims to think about the possible points of contact between neoconcretism and minimal art, analyzed from two fundamental theoretical formulations on these movements: the notions of non-object and specific objects, elaborated by Ferreira Gullar and Donald Judd, respectively. These notions sought to conceptualize the new type of three-dimensional art object, and in both cases considered an overcoming of the traditional artistic media of painting and sculpture. In spite of the similarities between these notions, the validation of this new artistic production was made, for each group, in moments in which its relation with the heritage of European art history and the presence of modernism occurred in different ways. The analysis of these movements from their relations with modernism, therefore, reveals a series of textual layers linked to the construction of these groups of artists as movements, as well as to the criticism and history built on them - from its inception to the current days.

[pt] Esta dissertação pretende analisar a obra do artista Amilcar de Castro (1920-2002) desde os seus primeiros desenhos, ainda sob a influência de seu antigo professor, o pintor Guignard, passando por sua adesão à vanguarda neoconcretista e à luz de conceitos como tridimensionalidade, raciocínio planar e topologia, suas esculturas, sobretudo, de corte e dobra e seus sólidos geométrico afirmam com mestria a inserção de um pensamento construtivo no Brasil. Se por um lado seu trabalho se aproxima e o torna signatário do movimento, por outro, Amilcar alcança sua singularidade em uma obra de profunda dimensão existencial e que mesmo em outros suportes (como os desenhos sobre tela e os poemas) mantém seu rigor e seu impulso estrutural e existencial. Partindo de uma linguagem construtiva que compreende a forma enquanto seu aparecimento e a negação de um espaço virtualmente dado, Amilcar constrói uma coerente aventura fundamentada a uma obstinação que o acompanhou por toda vida: a conquista do espaço.

[en] This research aims to examine the work of Amilcar de Castro since his first drawings, under the influence of his old teacher, the painter Guignard, in which we can already see the incision Over matter, the gesture That would define his sculptures, and the choice of drawings as primal force of his structural impulse. Passing through his relation with neoconcretist avantguard, and the ideias of 3D, planar thought and topology, his sculptures are an effort of building constructivist art and thinking in Brazil. Amilcar reaches his singularity through a work of deep existencial character, That even by other means (like drawings and poems) keep it s toughness and existencial impulse. Working with the ideia of constructive language, that sees form as language s appareance and denial of a virtually given space, Amilcar builds a work on basis of something that concerns him over all his life: the conquer of space.

[pt] O trabalho estuda alguns conceitos lançados pelas vanguardas construtivas internacionais e seu impacto no pensamento construtivista brasileiro. Investiga-se a emergência da arte concreta e a estruturação do desenho industrial no Brasil como partes de um projeto de modernização nacional, que ocorreu em meio a tensões, nas décadas de 1950 e 1960. No campo da arte, as discordâncias entre o Grupo Ruptura (1952), de São Paulo, e o Grupo Frente (1953-1954), do Rio de Janeiro, são examinadas, revelando diferentes interpretações acerca das idéias construtivas. Em seguida, discute-se o Manifesto Neoconcreto (1959), como uma reação ao extremado racionalismo da arte concreta, no momento em que o ideário progressista estava em crise. Observa-se, então, que a busca de maior autonomia no processo de criação marcou a produção gráfica de alguns artistas que integraram o Grupo Neoconcreto. Neste contexto, analisa-se meticulosamente a programação visual de Lygia Pape para o Cinema Novo, entre 1961 e 1967, buscando compreender em que medida os pressupostos neoconcretos se refletiram na produção de cartazes e letreiros. Verifica-se que a transgressão de algumas regras do design internacional, a dissolução das fronteiras entre arte, design e cinema, assim como as referências à arte popular brasileira, ao Expressionismo, ao Dadaísmo e à Pop Art são indicadores de que a artista ultrapassou os limites das rígidas teorias concretas. Por fim, o exame da vinheta criada por Lygia Pape para a Cinemateca do MAM-RJ (1963) aponta para o diálogo estabelecido entre sua proposta de anti-filme e as idéias do Cinema Novo.

[en] This work aims to study some concepts discussed by the international constructivist vanguards and their impact on the Brazilian constructive project. The research verifies that the emergence of the concrete art and the establishment of the industrial design as a discipline in Brazil, during the 1950’s and 1960’s, were inserted in a national program of modernization, developed amid tensions. The divergence between the Rupture Group (1952), from Sao Paulo, and the Front Group (1953/1954), from Rio de Janeiro is examined, revealing different interpretations upon the constructive trends. The Neoconcretist Manifest (1959) is analyzed as a reaction to the rationalist exacerbation of the concrete art in a moment that the politics for the country’s development was in crisis. It is noticed that the search for autonomy in the creative process caused an impact in the graphic production of some artists who integrated the Neoconcrete Group. In this context, the dissertation examines closely the Lygia Pape’s graphic design for the New Cinema Movement, between 1961 and 1967, elucidating in which ways the neoconcrete ideals are reflected in her letterings and posters. The transgression of certain international design’s rules, the dissolution of the boundaries between art, design and cinema, and the references to Brazilian popular art, Expressionism, Dadaism and American Pop Art are indications that the artist went beyond the limits…

[pt] Com a análise das produções e das trajetórias acadêmicas de dois expoentes da Vanguarda Construtiva Brasileira – Décio Pignatari e Lygia Pape – o presente trabalho discute a relação entre arte e indústria a partir dos anos 1950. Ambos trabalharam como artistas, designers e professores universitários. Acreditavam que o artista moderno devia integrar-se à coletividade de diversos modos, incluindo a participação nos meios de produção e nas mídias de massa. Como docentes, iniciaram suas carreiras ministrando semiótica. Posteriormente, Pignatari caminhou para as teorias da literatura e da comunicação enquanto Pape se dedicou ao ensino de linguagem visual. Tanto um quanto o outro lecionaram em cursos de graduação e pós-graduação. Seus textos acadêmicos, embora pouco examinados em profundidade como parte do Projeto Construtivo, trazem importantes reflexões acerca da crise da arte na era da reprodutibilidade técnica, propondo saídas para este impasse. Por esta razão, são analisados os ideais expostos na tese de doutorado Semiótica e Literatura (USP-1973), de Décio Pignatari, e na dissertação de mestrado Catiti-Catiti, na terra dos brasis (UFRJ-1980), de Lygia Pape. Busca-se compreender seus posicionamentos perante o questionamento do belo como categoria central da estética, observando os reflexos da Semiótica de. C. S. Peirce nos temas abordados por Pignatari e as marcas da Fenomenologia de M. Merleau-Ponty no pensamento de Pape. Investigam-se, então, suas posturas em defesa da invenção artística, considerando as duas diferentes perspectivas sobre este conceito. Livros de W. Benjamin, M. Bense e M. Pedrosa estão entre referenciais teóricos centrais das duas pesquisas.

[en] This research verifies the connections between constructive arts and industries after the 1950 s. Particularly, the work aims to inquire the productions and the academic trajectories of two important members of the Brazilian Constructive Vanguard – Décio Pignatari and Lygia Pape. Both of them were artists, designers and professors. In their view, the modern artist should contribute to industrial society in many different ways, because all creative activities were related. As college members, they began teaching semiotics. Lately, Pignatari dedicated his career to literature and communication theories and Pape became interested in visual linguistics education. It is worthwhile to mention that they were educators in graduation and post-graduation courses. Their academic papers discuss the art crisis in the age of mechanical reproduction, proposing ways to overcome this challenge. However, these texts were rarely mentioned as a part of Brazilian Constructive Project. Therefore, this investigation analyses Décio Pignatari s PHD Thesis called Semiótica e Literatura (USP-1973), and Lygia Pape s Masters Dissertation untitled Catiti-Catiti, na terra dos brasis (UFRJ-1980). [pt] Este trabalho utiliza o método iconológico de análise desenvolvido por W.J.T. Mitchell para expandir a noção de iluminura e dissolver a oposição entre legível e ilegível. Na primeira parte desta tese são analisados e definidos os mecanismos de leitura da iluminura e suas relações com as convenções da legibilidade e da ilegibilidade. Na segunda parte aborda-se essa mesma questão por meio de outra perspectiva, que envolve as transformações gráficas sofridas pelas páginas dos jornais a partir da virada do século XIX para o século XX.

[en] This work uses the iconological method of analysis developed by W.J.T. Mitchell to expand on the notion of illlumination and to break up the antagonism between the legibel and the illegible.In the first part of this thesis the mechanisms of reading illumination and their relation with the conventions of legibility and illegibility are analized and defined. In the second part, this same subject is approached from another perspective wich has envolved with the graphic transformation of newspaper pages at the end of the 19th Century end the beginning of the 20th Century.

[pt] Arquitetura da festa: neoconcretismo e arte pública no Rio de Janeiro é uma investigação sobre práticas artísticas contemporâneas que tomam a cidade do Rio de Janeiro como objeto. A partir da assimilação da arquitetura moderna nos anos 1950 e da relação dos artistas Amilcar de Castro e Hélio Oiticica com a cidade, este trabalho considera a desmaterialização do objeto de arte e sua transformação em ação estética como momento da ruptura neoconcreta. A participação do espectador diminui a distância entre público leigo e a arte contemporânea, que passa a assumir em sua prática a transitoriedade da vida na cidade moderna, expandindo o entendimento da arte pública contemporânea para além da ornamentação do espaço com esculturas e da produção de grafites. A realização de performances, happenings e ocupações estéticas em geral, reconfigura o espaço urbano através da suspensão de hábitos cotidianos e da participação do público, engendrando formas artísticas que apontam para a tradição carnavalesca carioca.

[en] Architecture of the festivity: neoconcretism and public art in Rio de Janeiro is an investigation about contemporary arts practices that takes the city of Rio de Janeiro as its object. With the incorporation of modern architecture and the relation between Amilcar de Castro and Hélio Oiticica with the city, from the 1950s on, this work considers the dissolution of the art object, and its transformation in an aesthetical action, as the moment of neoconcretism’s rupture. The spectators participation in building the artistic proposal diminishes the distance between the non specialized public and the contemporary art, which acquires in its practice, the transitoriness of life in the modern city, expanding the understanding of public art, nowadays, beyond the mere embellishment of the space with sculptures and graffiti. Performances, happenings and aesthetical occupations in general, reconfigure the urban space through the participation of the public, creating artistic forms that points to the cariocas carnivals tradition.

[pt] Reunir Amilcar de Castro e João Cabral de Melo Neto, que, embora contemporâneos e compartilhantes de gostos artísticos, jamais se conheceram, é corrigir um projeto que a História se esqueceu de terminar. Entre os aspectos que aproximam João Cabral de Amilcar de Castro está o privilégio da visualidade em sua poesia, que toma as palavras por sua materialidade de tinta sobre papel. Amilcar, por sua vez, também explora a metalinguagem da escultura, fazendo saltar à percepção aspectos como o peso e a conquista da terceira dimensão. O método comparativo, que é a própria técnica das símiles cabralinas, nos serve ainda para confrontar o projeto construtivo presente em ambos, mas que em Amilcar toma as peculiaridades da ruptura neoconcreta. Finalmente, a abordagem fenomenológica nos leva a descobrir na dobra - literal em Amilcar e sob a forma de um desmonte interno da palavra em Cabral - a contribuição fundamental para o projeto compartilhado de desnaturar a percepção humana. Promover tal encontro, entre esse escultor e esse poeta, é, deixadas de lado as notórias diferenças, sobretudo asseverar as semelhanças que o minucioso Cabral, crítico do museu de tudo e todos, descuidou-se em realizar.

[en] Bringing together Amilcar de Castro and João Cabral de Melo Neto, who never met, although contemporaries and who shared tastes in art, is to correct a project that History forgot to finish. One of the aspects that bring João Cabral closer to Amilcar de Castro is the privilege of the visual in his poetry, which takes the words because of their materiality of pen on paper. Amilcar, in turn, explores the metalanguage of sculpture, bringing to the fore aspects such as weight and achievement of the third dimension. The comparative method, which is the very technique of Cabralian similes, helps us to match the constructive project present in both, but which in Amilcar adopts the peculiarities of neo-concrete rupture. Finally, the phenomenological approach leads us to discover in the fold - literal in Amilcar and in the form of an inner dismantling of the word` in Cabral - the fundamental contribution for the shared project of perverting human perception. To promote such a meeting between this sculptor and this poet is, first and foremost, and ignoring the notorious differences, to assert the similarities that the hairsplitting Cabral, critic of the museum of everything and everyone, failed to make.

[pt] O objetivo desta dissertação é analisar a relação entre a obra de arte, o artista e o espectador a partir da produção de Lygia Clark e Hélio Oiticica. Esses dois artistas foram escolhidos como objeto de estudo por terem direcionado sua pesquisa no sentido de incluir o espectador como agente modificador e até mesmo criador da obra de arte. Ambos são reconhecidos por propor novas questões a respeito ocupação do espaço real pela obra de arte e pela busca da libertação da bidimensionalidade da tela e da moldura. Esta pesquisa se baseia na idéia de que os dois pintores se tornaram referência para a história da arte no Brasil e investiga suas trajetórias desde a participação no grupo Neoconcreto até seus últimos trabalhos, estudando os problemas propostos na produção de cada um, em especial, no que se refere ao diálogo que estabelecem com o público.

[en] The goal of this dissertation is to analyse the existing relationship between the art work, the artist and the spectator within the context of Lygia Clark s e Hélio Oiticica s work. These two artists were chosen as the object of this study because both were committed to proposing new issues regarding the inclusion of the spectator as a direct agent in the modification and even creation of the art work. They stood out in the artistic world by proposing innovating issues, searching to occupy the real space and free themselves from the bidimensionality of the canvas and the easel. The research is based on the premise that both are current references in the history of Brazilian art and investigates the span of their trajectory, from their participation in the Neoconcrete group up to their last pieces, stressing the problematics involved in each one s work and, specially, to what point they were able to establish a direct dialogue with the public.
