第一次世界大戦期に制作されたプロパガンダ・ポスターについて、ポスターによる宣伝と説得の構造と手法を明らかにすることを目標とした本論文では、ポスターを見る者が行動に至るまでの心理過程に着目し、プロパガンダ・ポスターに独自の構造と表現形式を解明することを試みている。本論文で研究課題としている第一次世界大戦では、参戦した各国で国民に対し募兵や募債、節約や供出などを訴えるポスターが制作された。19 世紀末に発達した石版印刷によるポスターは、20 世紀には商業宣伝のためのメディアとして興隆期を迎え、放送メディアに先駆けた、不特定多数の人々に働きかける、始祖的なマス・メディアの媒体として機能していた。戦争への協力を促すことを目的として制作されたポスターは、戦争の正当性を訴えて参戦を理解させ、募兵や募債を要請し、節約と増産を訴えた。戦場で懸命に戦う兵士の姿を描き、食糧援助の必要性を説いた。連合国のポスターでは敵国であるドイツの兵を残虐な怪物として描くことで憎悪させた。図像イメージと文字メッセージによって構成されるポスターは、瞬間のメディアである。映画や新聞、ラジオなどと比較しても、ポスターが見る者に対して働きかける時間は圧倒的に少ない。宣伝は、見る者がポスターを目にしてからその場を立ち去るまでのわずかの間に達成されなければならない。そのために、一瞬で認識できるような短く簡潔なキャッチ・コピーや、通行人の目を引くようなイラストレーションの使用などの工夫が行なわれた。戦時政策に連動して次々と新しいポスターが制作され、商業広告や雑誌のイラストレーションで人気のイラストレーターが作品を提供した。特にアメリカは参戦と同時に政府広報委員会(the Committee of Public Information)を設置し、戦時宣伝が組織的に展開する中でポスターを重要な媒体として位置付け、広報委員会の中にポスターによる宣伝を専門に行なう絵画広報部(the Division of…
