▼ "Maternal Citizens: Gender and Women's Activism in the
United States, 1945-1960" examines gender, citizenship, and postwar
political culture. It focuses on the bi-partisan General Federation
of Women's Clubs (GFWC), one of the nation's leading women's
organizations, and its gendered strategy for winning the Cold War.
The General Federation argued that, as mothers, women were
responsible for educating the citizenry in American values at home
and abroad. Charging clubwomen with this task, the GFWC positioned
clubwomen as the arbiters of national character, which the
organization identified with democracy, self-reliance, and free
enterprise. Reflecting the anticommunist zeitgeist as well as
clubwomen's white middle-class privilege, this construction defined
private institutions and actions as more American than state ones.
Locating women's public power in their domestic responsibilities
advanced a brand of maternalist politics. Although clubwomen had
long advocated maternalism ? the belief that women have special
qualities by dint of their motherhood that should be spread to
society at large ? the GFWC's postwar maternalism spoke to the
complexities of postwar
political culture. The GFWC's prescriptions
for American homemakers and their local civic activism demonstrate
a deep unease with the shifting relationship between the private
citizen and the expanding welfare state. At the same time, however,
the GFWC's international program imagined clubwomen could conduct
grassroots diplomacy among women overseas to complement their
strong state's international military and diplomatic agenda. The
GFWC's construction of gendered citizenship deftly negotiated this
uncertain
political terrain. Claiming maternal authority over
citizenship training, clubwomen framed these priorities as
apolitical "women's work." The project intervenes in the
historiography in several important ways: it adds to our
understanding of mainstream women's
political culture; it
highlights gendered fissures in the New Deal order; and it provides
an important counterpoint to the masculinized gender analysis found
in most Cold War literature. "Maternal Citizens" considers the
political work motherhood was able to do during the Cold War in
ways that defies easy
political categorization and complicates
traditional postwar narratives.

▼ Following the logic of Seymour Martin Lipset's 1959 hypothesis, the main axis of the Democratic Transitions debate has long been the strong correlation between economic development and democracy. More recent empirical evidence puts in doubt the direct relationship of economic development and democracy in cases where liberal economies are able to persist without the presupposed necessity for a transition to democracy. This thesis seeks to investigate the inconsistencies of the correlation between economic development and democracy. Specifically, why do some countries fail to transition to democracy despite having high economic development, and why do some countries fail at developing economically after transitioning to democracy? My findings reject the preconceived notion that economic development and democracy are directly intertwined, and propose that certain conditions of political stability and political legitimacy are required to produce the positive correlation between the two and explain the role of political institutions in explaining these inconsistencies.

▼ This dissertation examines how the Allies introduced public opinion polling to Germany after World War II and investigates how polling eventually became integrated into West German internal governance,
political culture, and foreign relations. It analyzes the goals and methods of opinion researchers including Paul Lazarsfeld, the survey units of the American occupation forces, Elisabeth Noelle-Neumann of the Allensbach Institute, the Emnid Institute, and Theodor Adorno and the Frankfurt School. Although these actors had divergent
political stances, they were motivated to apply empirical research methods to the West German population after World War II by shared concerns about the fragility of democracy and the destructive power of the masses, combined with faith in the empirical sciences as an antidote to fascistic thought patterns. “Polling after Fascism” shows that public opinion researchers did not provide seamless surveillance of
political and cultural life, as contemporary critics had feared. The professionalization of polling and the increasing media attention paid to opinion research over the course of the 1950s did, however, influence West German
political culture by stimulating academic and popular discussions about the meaning and significance of public opinion within a democracy.
“Polling after Fascism” makes three major contributions to our understanding of the histories of Germany and public opinion research. First, it stresses the unifying effects of fears of the masses, which formed the basis for consensus among disparate actors. It shows that in the early 1950s, a surprising mix of researchers, intellectuals, and officials on opposing ends of the
political spectrum worked together to advocate empirical social research as a way to assess risks posed by the West German masses. Second, the dissertation argues that national opinion research studies were not only conducted for internal clients (in this case, for the West German people and politicians), but were frequently designed to address the concerns of foreign observers. Third, “Polling after Fascism” offers a new account of the development of a public sphere of discussion and debate in West Germany during the 1950s, challenging the common argument that the elements of a democratic
political culture only emerged in later decades.

▼ This thesis considers theoretically the institutional nature of
culture and its strength as a determinant of
political behavior in Southwest Virginia. Beginning with a description of the geography of Southwest Virginia and the demographics of the region's inhabitants, the thesis proceeds to outline the cultural nuances of the region that make it ripe for misunderstanding by the outside world when attempting to explain the cognitive dissonance between voting behavior and regional needs. Then the thesis explores how the
culture of the region serves as its own institution that protects itself from outside forces. This phenomenon is explained through an outline of the man-made institutions which have been forged to ensure long-term
political power that itself protects the institution of regional
culture. Further evidence is presented through voting and demographic data that solidifies the role of
culture in determining
political behavior.

▼ This study uses party platforms to assess the degree of independence between state and national
political parties in the United States in light of issue ownership theory and morality politics. Utilizing a coding scheme adapted from the Comparative Manifesto Project, I analyze the ideology and content of 80 Democratic and Republican state party platforms from 2008-2010. I uncover substantial variations among state party platforms and findings suggest that state parties manage to maintain a significant level of independence from the national parties. Some of the findings suggest our current understanding of state party politics is inadequate. For example, contrary to expectations, Republican state party platforms show more ideological variation than their Democratic counterparts. In contrast to national patterns, Democratic state party platforms conform more consistently with issue ownership theory than their Republican counterparts. And Democratic state party platforms are significantly more likely to balance their progressive policy preferences with conservative party interests.

▼ This dissertation studies the creative practices of citizens who use cultural resources to engage in political criticism in contemporary Cuba. I argue that, in order to become visible as political subjects in the public sphere, these citizens appeal to cultural forms and narratives of self-representation that elucidate the struggles for recognition faced by emerging social actors. I examine blogs, garage bands, art performances, home art exhibits, digital literary supplements, improvised academies, and informal networks of publication that, as forms of aesthetic experimentation with stories of everyday life, disclose a social text. I suggest that their narrative choices emphasize their status as 'regular citizens' in order to distinguish themselves from both traditional voices of political opposition and institutionally accredited cultural producers – professional artists, academics, musicians. This recasts sites of cultural production as models of alternative citizenship where the concept of the political is re-imagined and where the commonplace, pejorative meaning of the term amateur is contested. On the fringes of the republic of letters, adjacent to traditional sites of cultural production, these oblique uses of culture consequently question legitimate forms of public speech. They demand that the way in which the relationship between aesthetics and politics in Cuba has been traditionally studied be reconsidered.
Read in tandem with discourses against and about them from the lettered city – in literature, cultural criticism, film, and visual arts – I also follow the trope of the amateur under revolutionary cultural politics. I suggest that these contemporary voices have a contradictory genealogy in the cultural practices of the early decades of the Cuban Revolution. I try to show that these cultural practices become politically and socially significant because they try to resist – though not always successfully – cooptation by two forces: the remnant of bureaucratic, state-capitalist tendencies on one hand, and the rapid commercialization of popular culture for a foreign audience on the other. As a result, both the reconfigurations of the cultural field and the contested meanings of democracy in post-Cold War Cuba are re-examined through a reading of informal hubs of cultural production. The functions of culture in late socialism can be then comparatively studied by looking at an institutional framework in transition through the social and political subjectivities that are both expressed in, and constituted by, corresponding aesthetic practices and forms.

The present doctoral thesis deals with the problem of the stability of democracy, given the permanent threat of its self-destruction. This problem does not only arise in the light of an allegedly acute crisis of a democracy torn between its populist excitation and its technocratic exsiccation. Ever since its spread in the twentieth century, the democratic form of government was accompanied by worried voices that warned – from different perspectives – of the danger of its self-destabilisation.
Against this background,…

▼ This thesis seeks to answer the question 'when, how, and why the Danish asylum system become more restrictive than the Swedish one between 1989 and 2001'. In the analysis of these reasons, a particular emphasis is placed on the different
political perceptions of both countries’ welfare philosophies on the one hand, and their
political culture on the other. The influence of anti-immigration parties on mainstream
political culture is an important part of this analysis. Through a distinction between border and integration policy, it becomes clear that the Danish asylum policy becomes more restrictive in the second half of the 1990s, because of its focus on cultural integration as a duty to the welfare state. The thesis concludes with a discussion regarding the impact of (neoliberal) economic changes on solidarity within
political culture.

▼ The outcome of this research paper provides an
emphasis on the role of trust as a trigger for the turnaround
strategy that can influence employees’ behaviour, and hence
increase satisfaction levels within the organisation in challenging
moments of unstable
political environment. The aim of understanding
trust in this context, is thus to reduce the incidents of business
interruptions and eventually improve business performance.
Dimensions of trust were categorised into affect-based and
cognition-based trust. Furthermore, two influencing moderators;
internal communication within the organisation and organisation
commitment among employees; were introduced to explicitly identify
the dynamics of the relationship between the dimensions of trust
and job satisfaction. The study was completed using a survey
conducted in Egypt, during the critical period after the president
was ousted and there was a take-over by the military, which caused
massive turbulence to the business environment. Data was collected
from four different firms operating in different industries. The
multiple regression model was able to identify the vital role of
cognition-based trust as a dominant trigger for job satisfaction.
Moreover, internal communication and organisational commitment were
found to moderate the impact on the relationship between dimensions
of trust and job satisfaction, and hence are able to stimulate
improved job satisfaction, thus improve business
performance.

A fractured identity, a fractured democracy: the national facet of Ukraine’s transition

▼ After the dissolution of the USSR in 1991, Ukraine became an independent state. Despite an initial period of optimism regarding the future of the state, after twenty two years, Ukraine has continued to remain politically unstable. This has culminated in periods of civil unrest with the Orange revolution in 2004 and the ‘EuroMaidan’ protests of 2013.
In 1991,
political scholars anticipated that the former Soviet republics would embark on a transition towards democracy. However, traditional theoretical frameworks have been proven to be ineffective for analysing the current
political and social situation in Ukraine. Drawing on Taras Kuzio’s ‘quadruple transition’ framework, this thesis contents that it is the nation element of transition that prevents the consolidation of democracy in Ukraine.
This thesis argues that the current citizens of Ukraine are divided into two
political cultures, with distinct perspectives of the raison d’être and the national identity of the Ukrainian state. A historical analysis of the history of Ukraine illustrates that this divide has been entrenched by the various imperial rulers of ethnic Ukrainians. This divide in
political culture is then applied as a paradigm in order to understand the discourse of Ukrainian politics since independence. As democratic
political systems depend upon their citizens for
political legitimacy, the identity of the nation and citizenship laws are vital for creating a united demos. This research illustrates how Ukraine’s legislation regarding the identity of the state did not provide a clear definition of the Ukrainian demos.
Ultimately, my research concludes that Ukraine will continue to evade the consolidation of its democracy until it can establish a consensus on the Ukrainian demos.

▼ This thesis compares the impact of immigration on the political cultures of the town of High River, Alberta, and the city of Brooks, Alberta, from 1996 until 2012.
High River and Brooks are located in southern Alberta, and are home to large meat processing facilities. Both municipalities experienced population growth from 1996 until 2012, but while the immigrant and non-permanent resident population of High River increased by 108.82% from 1996 until 2011, the immigrant and non- permanent resident population of Brooks increased by 368.38% in the same period.
Two indicators of political engagement are used, including voting results from provincial elections held in 1997, 2001, 2004, and 2008. In addition, local newspaper publications are reviewed; the High River Times and The Brooks Bulletin are examined for two months preceding a provincial election, during the month of an election, and for one month following an election.

▼ In the early 1970s, the Canadian welfare state began a radical transformation in which Canadians were left with a weaker social safety net in the areas of income supports, social services, and social legislation, a transformation that Canadians are coping with today. This thesis is an investigation of the extent to which Canadians found this transformation in their welfare state desirable. Using the Canadian Election Study from 1965 to 2011, I demonstrate that Canadians underwent an ideological shift within this time frame in which “being Canadian” has acquired connotations of self-reliance through work and the market, a phenomenon I refer to as the individuation of the Canadian citizenry. I conclude that while Canadians may have undergone significant individuation from the 1970s to the present, Canadians are still considerably collective with respect to more inclusive social policy areas such as healthcare and education.

▼ Focusing on the more than 6,000 posters now on view at the Palestine Poster Project Archives Website ("Website"), I will outline its evolution from a (failed) class project to online resource for viewing the poster art of the Palestinian-Zionist conflict (1897 - Present). I will discuss the major features of the Website, including Special Collections and Iconography and introduce the four Wellsprings of the Palestine poster: Zionist-Israeli (2,005 posters); Palestinian (2,514 posters); Arab/Muslim (331 posters); and International (1,195 posters). I will outline how I originally became aware of the Palestine poster genre and began building a personal collection that would eventually evolve into an archives ("Archives"). I will list some of the ways the Website is currently being used by artists and teachers and outline some of its planned features including as a clearinghouse for the display of new posters created in the context of Palestine poster contests. In my conclusion, I will argue that the Website of the Palestine Poster Project Archives opens a new "cultural position" (quoting Edward Said) from which Americans can dispassionately discuss the Palestinian-Zionist conflict. This thesis is one of three elements in my thesis project. The other two are the New Curriculum and the Palestine Poster Project Archives Website.

▼ [ACCESS RESTRICTED TO THE UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI AT AUTHOR'S REQUEST.] My dissertation examines the New York publishing industry from the end of the American Revolution to the Age of Jackson. The dissertation analyzes the set of economic relationships and shared cultural practices that bound printers, booksellers, and their readers together and provided the arena in which both
political debate and literary production took place. More specifically, the dissertation looks at the ways in which knowledge circulated across space and time. I argue that if the cultural matrix of printed texts served as the primary legitimating vehicle for
political debate and literary expression, then scholars need to understand that these texts were produced and used by real people in real places with actual interests and affiliations that influenced their work. Second, I also explore the processes by which New York publishers extended into distant markets and argue that, as they took advantage of existing communication and transportation channels, early publishers became cultural brokers as they created a networked nation of print. In so doing, I focus on the social and economic organization of the industry in an effort to chart the world made by printers: from the printing houses where artisans made the physical impressions the "republic of letters" was built out of, to the public and private spaces in which the information was displayed, shipped, bought, discussed, and discarded. The dissertation thus reveals the ways in which printers and publishers in the early republic shrewdly created a national print
culture by critically examining the commercial and
political distribution networks that began taking shape after 1783.

▼ This dissertation addresses the need for a more nuanced understanding of
political engagement. It argues for greater attention to variation in the meaning of diverse forms of
political participation cross-nationally. It also draws attention to the relationship between
culture and activism. Key aspects of the literature on
political participation are tested and revised.
In Chapter 2, I investigate and disaggregate the broad category of non-institutional engagement. I show that, far from being a unified category of action, non-institutional engagement is made up of three distinct repertoires of activism: communicative, individualised and collective. I challenge claims that non-institutional activism is more inclusive than traditional forms of participation by measuring the relative effects of typical predictors (resources, values and contextual measures) on different repertoires of non-institutional engagement. Important distinctions emerge, pointing to the need for more nuanced definitions of
political engagement and greater attention to the relationship between activism, context and individual-level social location.
The relationship between engagement and national context is investigated further in Chapter 3 where I test Castells’ theory of global social movement development across a variety of countries. Castells’ theory is emblematic of broader trends in the literature that seek to identify universal pathways to mobilisation. While lending support to parts of his theory regarding online technologies, the findings suggest that national context moderates the way citizens’ dissatisfaction gets translated into engagement.
Cultural factors, at the individual and contextual level, also influence the form that
political participation takes. Chapter 4 advocates for a practice theory approach to the study of
political behaviour. I show that distinct forms of
political participation gain meaning from their location within broader repertoires of
political action and from their relationship to individuals’ cultural dispositions and
political preferences.
In sum,
political engagement is shaped by the national,
political and cultural climate in which it occurs.
Political practices do not have inherent, universally transposable characteristics that can be used to construct generalising typologies of engagement. To understand how people in diverse settings interact with politics,
political sociologists should adopt a more nuanced understanding of
political engagement as contextually and socially conditioned cultural practice.

▼ The purpose of this qualitative research study was to explore how institutional
culture impacts women's
political leadership efficacy development. By utilizing a constructivist design and a methodology rooted in feminine inquiry that included an interview and document (photo) analysis, a group of traditionally aged (18-24 year old) college women shared their lived experiences at one public land-grant research institution. The themes that emerged were based on multiple photo-elicitation interviews conducted with the participants throughout a semester. The data gathered was analyzed using a constant comparative method. Interpretation was done, in part, based on a leadership efficacy development framework. The students' sagas explored perceptions, interpretations and experiences related to
political leadership efficacy development. They recognized the institution as still heavily male dominated and shared lived experiences that reinforced their perception that women were held to higher standards than men throughout campus. By examining these findings through the context of leadership efficacy development, it was determined that the mixed messages received by participants from the institution impacted their interest, perception and experience engaging in
political leadership. The research indicated that reinforcement and enhancement of positive
political leadership experiences throughout campus might increase women's
political leadership efficacy. The integration of
political leadership learning within the curricular and co-curricular systems highlighted how students envisioned a campus
culture more focused on
political leadership efficacy development for women.

▼ History
This dissertation makes three key arguments regarding politics and print culture in antebellum Florida. First, Florida’s territorial status, historic geographical divisions, and local issues necessitated the use of political parties. Second, Florida’s political parties evolved from a focus on charismatic men and local geographic loyalties to loyalty to party regardless of who was running to national and regional loyalties above local issues and men. Lastly, the central and most consistent aspect of Florida’s political party development was the influence of newspapers and their editors. To understand Florida politics in the nineteenth century it is necessary to recognize how the personal, geographical, and political divisions in Florida’s territorial past remained a critical factor in the development and function of national political parties in Florida. The local divisions within Florida in the 1820s created factions and personal loyalties that would later help characterize national parties in the 1840s. Political leaders, with the help of editors and their newspapers, created factions based more on personal loyalties than on ideology. By the 1850s party loyalty became paramount over personal or regional loyalties. In the last years before the Civil War Democrats linked Southern loyalty to the Democratic party and accused their opposition of treason against the South leading Florida and the nation to Civil War. Yet, throughout these political changes, editors and their newspapers remained central to political success, becoming the voice of political parties and critical to attracting and maintaining potential voters. In addition to understanding how politics functioned in antebellum Florida, this dissertation contributes to our larger understanding of the Second Party System and the South. An underlying argument of this dissertation is that while the Democrats tended to be better organized and more ideologically coherent, the Whigs suffered from constant in-fighting and splintering. This led to the Democratic domination of politics and, in the South, the ability of secession supporters to control the public conversation during the Sectional Crisis of the 1850s and lead the nation to war. This dissertation also claims that there is not just one South but many and exposes the myth of a changeless and monolithic South.

The Europeanization process invites post-communist Romania to redefine its political culture. Although incomplete, it causes the setting up of retraction mechanisms of politics. The contemporary decline of the representative democracy and of the partisan engagement invites us to redefine the relationship between « Democracy and Europeanization ». As long as the conditions for democratization of the European Union are not settled, they will not aim at the improvement of the democratic exercise of the States that compose it. The establishment of a democratic culture in Romania is impeded by the lack of understanding Politics, but also by the entry into the post-democracy era of a culture whose roots are paternalistic and…

▼ Place is a common theme in depictions of Nova Scotian
politics. The Ivany Commission, for example, describes in its
recent report deep attitudinal cleavages between urban and rural
residents, who seem almost to occupy different worlds (Nova Scotia
2014: 10). Using the Ivany Report as a starting point, this thesis
tests the assumption that spatial factors explain differences in
attitudes. Respondents to the 2013 Comparative Provincial Election
Project survey are assigned to geographic categories, and
regression models are developed to identify the relationship
between these categories and attitudes. The results provide mixed
evidence for the spatial hypothesis. Whereas some variables exhibit
no spatial variation, others indicate that rural and Mainland
residence is correlated with economic and moral conservatism and a
preference for government attention to rural issues. Systematic
spatial variation in public opinion therefore does exist, although
it is less dramatic than the stark divisions identified by the
Ivany Commission.

The effective influence of the Judiciary Branch on citizen participation in political decisions and policy making has been discussed in social sciences for more than a decade. To
this phenomenon, entitled judicialization of politics, was attributed the operability of a democratic constitution, open and capable of achieving the aspirations of freedom,
nonetheless only consistent with the values of a conservative liberalism. With the aid of empirical research, our thesis aims at demonstrating the persistent influence of traditionalist
inheritance of a social class which, throughout the country short existence, constructed and permeated national political institutions with its worldview. The corporative and
institutionalized behavior of this class of jurists from the highest court was well adapted with demands of the modern states institutions expansion, due to its authoritarian legacy and aimed at restricting the reach for freedom and for civil rights of a newly democratic country, despite the constant allusions to participatory democracy. In this context we will try to narrate the continuous and silent evolution of the desjudicialization of mass democratic politics and the gradual politization of jurists corporation, which carry alongside the expectations of an expansion of constitutional citizenship.

▼ It is a qualitative study about political socialization of first-generation ethnic Russian immigrants in Central and South Florida. The method used is a constructivist grounded theory with two-level coding. Based on data collected in forty in-depth interviews, I constructed a model of political socialization. It incorporates a starting point (the legal status in the US), triggers (English language proficiency, spousal support, and parenting), political socialization agencies (English as Second Language classes, a spouse, volunteering, the church) and output structures (bureaucratic institutions). Using respondents’ opinions about American vs. Russian political systems and mass media, their political participation, and views about political efficacy, I created an original classification of immigrants’ political attitudes and behavior. The classification consists of four groups: the Admirers, the Skeptics, the Incurious, and the Recluses. This study fills the gap in the literature about Russian-speaking immigrants in the US. It also contributes to the cache of micro-theories on immigrant political socialization.

▼ A small subsection of the literature on Nietzsche’s
political philosophy focuses on a key passage that appears in the sixth section of “Schopenhauer as Educator.” In this passage, Nietzsche claims that the individual’s life attains its highest value by living for the benefit of humanity’s rarest and most valuable specimens. Some philosophers, like John Rawls and Thomas Hurka, take this passage to be sufficient evidence of a larger commitment on Nietzsche’s part to aristocracy. Others oppose Rawls’ and Hurka’s interpretations, claiming that this key passage is evidence of a commitment to democracy. However, both sides are incorrect. This particular section of “Schopenhauer as Educator” is actually evidence of Nietzsche’s commitment to divorcing cultural institutions from the influence of states
in toto. I explain why Nietzsche is committed neither to aristocracy nor to democracy, and how the passage from “Schopenhauer as Educator” commits Nietzsche to a post-
political position.

▼ Unique to nineteenth-century Spain and Central America, the pronunciamiento can be interpreted as an act of insubordination against ruling authorities, which included a written document with a list of complaints or demands. The practice was almost always carried out by members of the army, but usually involved heavy participation by
political and civilian sectors of society as well. The pronunciamiento more often than not contained a threat of military violence if the grievances of the pronunciados were not listened to; as a result, it carried with it the implicit consequence of armed revolt.
The pronunciamiento was responsible for major
political changes in early nineteenth-century Mexico and Yucatán, and was also one of the most powerful forces of
political and societal destabilisation during this period. Indeed, the pronunciamiento was responsible for the establishment of federalist and centralist systems, changes of constitutions, and constant overthrows of presidents. This was also true on a smaller scale in Yucatán, as the pronunciamiento was not only used to depose governors and administrations, but was the key negotiatory mechanism between the Yucatecan and Mexican administrations; yucatecos resorted to the pronunciamiento to realise their secessions from and reunifications to Mexico throughout the early nineteenth century.
The aim of this thesis is to expose the dynamic of the Yucatecan pronunciamiento. It will challenge the present depiction of the pronunciamiento as military exercise of destabilization, and will instead concentrate on exposing it as a highly intricate process of
political representation and negotiation, at both local and national levels. This will not only contribute toward a greater understanding of pronunciamiento
culture on a local and more general scale, but will also reveal a more comprehensive analysis of the socio-
political and economic circumstances of nineteenth-century Yucatán. This in turn will aid in re-defining early nineteenth-century Mexico, questioning its traditional depiction as an age of “chaos”, and instead exposing it as one dominated by
political and ideological forces and factions, who used the pronunciamiento to express their beliefs and to negotiate for change.

▼ Thesis Ph. D. Michigan State University. Political Science 2016
While research on conspiracy theories and those who believe them has recently undergone an empirical renaissance, there still exists a great deal of uncertainty about the measurement of conspiratorial beliefs and predispositions, and the consequences of a conspiratorial mindset when it comes to expressly political attitudes and behaviors. Unfortunately, current strategies for measuring the latent trait that informs conspiratorial beliefs are affected by error attributable to partisan motivated reasoning, social desirability concerns, and the peculiar content and context of specific conspiracy theories. In this project, I first demonstrate, using data from the 2012 American National Election Study, that beliefs in a variety of specific conspiracy theories are simultaneously the product of both a general predisposition toward conspiratorial thinking and partisanship. I further find, using survey data gathered via Amazon’s Mechanical Turk platform, that the level of partisan content ingrained within conspiracy theories varies tremendously across conspiracy theories, including even inherently “political” conspiracies.Next, I use unique data gathered via a module on the 2014 Cooperative Congressional Election Study (CCES) and reigning theory on the characteristics of conspiratorial thinking to construct and validate a cumulative, unidimensional scale of conspiratorial thinking. I find that a substantial proportion of the population is highly suspicious of governmental authority. In addition to being related to other constructs and attitudes such as authoritarianism, trust, and perceptions of governmental corruption, the conspiratorial thinking scale strongly predicts conspiratorial attitudes about genetically-modified foods, the link between childhood vaccines and autism, the birthplace of Barack Obama, governmental knowledge about the 9/11 terrorist attacks, and the assassination of John F. Kennedy. Finally, I demonstrate the effects of conspiratorial thinking on a variety of political phenomena of normative interest to political scientists. First, I consider the moderating role of a conspiratorial mindset when it comes to traditional relationships like the one between partisanship and attitudes about the role of government. More specifically, I demonstrate that as one’s level of conspiratorial thinking increases, the ties between partisanship and feelings about the federal government, attitudes about the scope and reach of government, preferences about the level of governmental spending and production of services, and sup- port for the Tea Party simultaneously dissolve. Second, I find that conspiratorial thinking is negatively related to approval of major governmental institutions, including the president, Congress, and the Supreme Court. Lastly, I corroborate recent work showing the negative relationship between conspiratorial thinking and participation in campaign activities, and extend this work by demonstrating the negative effect of conspiratorial…

▼ This dissertation discusses United Arab Emirates (UAE) state-society relations in historical perspective; analyses qualitatively the Emirati political culture; examines how the latter affects governmental policies in the UAE; and evaluates both qualitatively and quantitatively the political orientations and values of the Emirati educated youth. Through a discussion of existing theoretical and conceptual approaches, and the observation of the UAE case study, it argues that an important and overlooked dimension among students of state-society relations in authoritarian rentier states is citizens’ political culture, which should nonetheless be examined within a more integrative framework of analysis. Accordingly, this study employs a refined version of the holistic ‘state-in-society’ approach (Kamrava, 2008), in combination with rentier state theory (RST) and the political culture perspective (Almond & Verba, 1963), to qualitatively discuss the general Emirati political culture (agency/input), and assess how the latter affects governmental performance/policies (output); and to evaluate, both qualitatively and quantitatively, the political culture of the educated Emirati youth as the main potential supporters or opponents (agency/input) of the ruling elite. Adding to the debate around the continued significance and scope of RST, the dissertation concludes that the rentier nature of a state does not necessarily determine its people´s lack of interest in politics, but can actually empower them to challenge authoritarianism through political socialization. The historical approach to UAE political movements and discussion about contemporary political standpoints demonstrate that governmental policies (redistributive, co-optative, repressive, or reformist) are mainly driven by domestic pressure and run parallel to historical development of domestic political activism. Hence, rentierism by itself does is not sufficient to explain state-society relations in the Gulf region. Finally, the analysis and measurement of cognitive, affective and evaluative political orientations of Emirati UAEU students reflects that there is adherence to ‘post-materialistic’ and ‘self-expression’ values among important sectors of the Emirati educated youth, which are associated with the emergence of a participative political culture (Inglehart & Welzel, 2005): an ‘aspiring participant’ political culture.

▼ M.A. (Communication Studies)
This dissertation will concentrate on the manner in which the signification system of popular culture in advertising texts operate within the context of changing South African or post apartheid society. Social and political changes have taken place virtually overnight and it is therefore not surprising that the effects of these transformations have not yet filtered through to all layers of society. Furthermore, such quick changes cannot take place without causing at least some ripples of dissent and upheaval within certain sectors of society which may include cultural groups or even business. The author will consequently examine the effect which social changes have had on the perceptions of advertisers in the marketplace and the manner in which their brands are portrayed within advertising texts. More specifically, an investigation will be undertaken into the manner in which Popular Culture, whiph is inherently South African, has been incorporated within the contents of those texts. Popular Culture, it will be argued, has moved away from being a term used by classical Marxists to describe a so-called mass culture. In fact, within the context of a postmodern society, in other words, one which is essentially multi-faceted, the . concept Popular Culture-encapsulates that which is used within the day-to-day living experience to make a statement of dissent with the mainstream. Therefore the task set by this dissertation is manifold. the first instance we will place the South African market within a historic, cultural and economic context. In other words, we will attempt to trace the life-world of the South

▼ When Antonio de Morga
arrived as President of the Audiencia in Quito,
a Spanish “kingdom” in middle of the Andes, the prominent families
of the city presented him with several tokens of appreciation and
allegiance, both to his person and to the king, whom he
represented. Far from a shallow custom that allowed local elites to
ostent their livery and meet the agents of colonial power,
encounters such as this symbolized the renewal of the contractual
notion of allegiance prevalent in the Spanish
political system.
Morga governed for the longest term in Quito’s history, navigating
a complex, consensual system, with enduring effects in the region’s
political life. Nevertheless, the skilled president has become an
inconspicuous side-note in the historiography of the viceroyalty of
Peru. Most of the scholarship has focused on his role in the early
history of the Philippines, disregarding many of the significant
features of Don Antonio’s multifaceted bureaucratic service, and
neglecting what I hope to show is an opportunity to examine an
archetype – or perhaps epitype – of Spanish
political and
administrative performance in the overseas territories. I try to
deepen knowledge on Morga´s career in an attempt to understand four
aspects of
political culture in the Real Audiencia
in Quito in the seventeenth century:
political practices,
factions, means of
political representation, and social
inclusion. That Spanish authorities negotiated obedience
with locally powerful and particular interests is not a new idea,
but I contribute to the field by revealing and describing patterns
of
political behavior in the audiencias.
Historians have favored the idea that “colonial” politics
were parochial, focused on mere profiteering, driven by localism
and dominated by an exclusive oligarchy. I contend that this
characterization is inaccurate. The global implications of imperial
policy required effective mechanisms of governance and of social
and
political inclusion to accommodate a wider reange of
individuals, groups and interests than historical tradition
commonly covers. Without outlets of such collaborators the Spanish
monarchy could not successfully have exerted dominance in the
region for over three centuries.

From 9/11 to UFOs, from American concentration camps to the Kennedy's assassination, this dissertation aims to enlighten, through a sociopolitical analysis, the grounds, the mechanics and the goals of the conspiratorial thought in the United States since the Revolution. Even Though it is no question to draw an exhaustive catalog of each and every conspiracy theory, I would stress that conspiracism is part of the American political and popular culture. Then, this dissertation studies the origins and the developments of conspiracism through three complementary focuses. First, a factual approach which dwells on specific conspiracy theories such as the 9/11 attacks or the assassination of Kennedy. Secondly, I will come on the actors of conspiracism : the conspiracist leaders (LaRouche, Icke) the citizens sleuths and the scapegoats (Communists, Jews, Illuminatis). Finally, under a cultural angle, I will outlook conspiracism and the American culture of anti-statism, the presence of mafias or the role of mass-medias.
