▼ Terrorism and atrocities have scarred the public memory in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. Three atrocities, the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing, the 1996 massacre at Port Arthur Historic Site in Tasmania, Australia, and the 2002 Bali bombings, had a significant impact on the communities they most affected. How did the differing governments and communities at these sites respond to the sudden loss of life? How were the competing agendas of these groups managed ? Are there shared and distinctive characteristics in the memorialisation of atrocitites across these countries at the turn of the millenium? In responding to these questions, this study analyses cultural differences in memorialisation at contemporary atrocity sites. It examines the differing responses at the case study sites to the planning and the timing of memorials, the engagement of those affected, the memorial designs and the management of the memorials, including tributes. It is an original comparative study of contemporary memorialisation by a heritage professional directly involved in the management of memorials at contemporary atrocity sites. The original research includes the identification of the role the internet in contemporary memorialisation, an in-depth analysis of the memorialisation of the 1996 massacre at Port Arthur Historic Site, and the memorialisation in Bali and across Australia of the 2002 Bali bombings. It extends the current scholarship on the memorialisation of the Oklahoma City bombing through identifying the impact of the internet in the memorialisation and in the timeframe of the analysis through to the 15th anniversary in 2010. The comparative analysis of the management of tributes at all the sites identified issues not previously considered in Australian scholarship: that tributes and the response to them is part of the memorialisation and management of contemporary atrocity sites. A combined research method based on an interpretive social science approach was adopted. A range of methodogies were used, including literature reviews, analysis of electronic material, site visits, unstructured in-depth interviews, and participant-observation at memorial services. Studies on history, memory and memorialisation provided the framework for my analysis and led to an original proposal, that all three sites have shared histories of the memorialisation of war and ‘missing’ memorialisation. These shared histories, I argue, strengthened the justification for this comparative study. This comparative study identified differences across the case study countries in the designs of the built memorials, in legislation enacted after the atrocities, the responses to the perpetrators, the marking of anniversaries, and in the management of tributes left at the sites. ▼ Initial public offerings (IPOs) are perhaps the most exhilarating events on stock exchanges. Yet, the ‘ambiguity’ of the risk of IPOs overshadows the thrill and deters many investors from possibly considering the IPOs. It is the insufficient accounting and market history at the IPO stage that burdens their proper risk quantification. The main objective pursued by this thesis is to offer a methodology for measuring the short-term risk of IPOs which conforms to the mathematical principles of market risk analysis employed in the case of public companies. Here, short-term risk is defined as the uncertainty associated with the stock price of the IPO of interest (IPOI) 90 days subsequent to the issuing day and is quantified as a value-at-risk (VaR) inferred from the probability density function of price on day 90 (i.e., PDF_90^IPOI). This thesis develops a Bayesian framework where PDF_90^IPOI can be estimated in a recursive and iterative process. In most IPO cases, there exist limited hard data, yet, strong ‘prior’ belief (soft data). The Bayesian setting offers a unique risk quantification approach which befits and serves these two characteristics of IPOs. To obtain the data required for carrying out the risk analysis, this research relies upon the ‘closest comparable’ of IPOI. The ‘closest comparable’ would be a public firm whose pre-IPO idiosyncratic financial data most resemble those of IPOI. Furthermore, it is expected to have gone public in similar macro-economic and sector conditions. Concisely, the risk quantification process involves two phases: In Phase I, a Data Envelopment Analysis-based multi-dimensional similarity metric is developed to select the closest comparable. Phase I indeed identifies the most suitable source of ‘prior’ knowledge and passes the output to Phase II which encompasses the Bayesian process. Phase II is designed to formulate and refine the ‘prior’ evidence and then employ the achieved ‘posterior’ knowledge towards estimating PDF_90^IPOI. This PDF_90^IPOI subsequently acts as the basis for VaR inferences. In the last stage of the research, the proposed Bayesian VaR methodology is examined (backtested) using the following two tests: test of uniform cumulative probability values and test of VaR break frequency. ▼ Holocaust commemoration is a vast, multifaceted enterprise. Diverse styles and forms have continued to emerge, and a chronology of types has evolved throughout the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Holocaust remembrance began with narratives, communicated as oral histories and sermons, published in books, journals, newspapers, and magazines, and presented in dramatic performances. In the 1960s and '70s many Holocaust groups sought something more substantial to represent the horror that the Holocaust wrought. Synagogues, community centers, and Jewish businesses installed plaques, stained glass windows, and displays containing Holocaust relics to commemorate the Shoah. Cemeteries became the appropriate location to dedicate larger structures, since Holocaust monuments would serve as tombstones for victims denied proper burial. The 1980s and '90s brought another transformation – suddenly, memorialization caught public attention. Not only had the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum opened in 1993, but that same year, the award-winning movie Schindler's List was released. Another major museum opened in 1997 – the Museum of Jewish Heritage in New York City. Interest grew on a local level as well. Large memorials were erected in public parks, creating physical spaces for commemoration and inviting community gatherings. This surge of remembrance activity directly parallels Jewish Americans' socio-economic change. Jews in the United States had become affluent and powerful over the course of the twentieth century, and they now had the ability to commemorate on a larger scale. The chronology of memorialization has progressed into the twenty-first century, with educational programs implemented in conjunction with the built environment. The purpose of this research is to analyze the evolution of Shoah commemoration and the emergence of physical structures – monuments, memorials, and museums. This is illustrated through the exploration of several case studies in the Southeastern United States. Basic investigations revealed each project's development, organization, leadership, and community involvement. Additional information was gained through personal interviews, phone conversations, and electronic communication with engaged participants. Memorials will outlast eyewitnesses, and they have the potential to exist longer than original Holocaust structures. Through their preservation and the production of didactic tools, the Shoah will be remembered. ▼ Expressing grief and engaging in mourning are vital healing processes for those who have experienced loss, trauma or violence. Regardless of whether in the distant past or as an ongoing condition, evidence suggests that the mourning process and the partaking of commemorative rituals are essential to the psychological and emotional wellbeing of the individual. This thesis considers artistic alternatives to the role that monuments and memorials have traditionally played in assisting this process. A range of theorists and philosophers including those in the fields of art criticism, history, and trauma studies are referred to in ascertaining not only how monuments and memorials work, but the role that contemporary art can play in imparting meaningful remembrance and solace. This project tests the proposition that contemporary art, through both public and personal expression, can offer an open- ended re-evaluation of the past, instead of the static nature of traditional commemoration. I contend that this can be realised in the form of actions and ephemeral, temporary and materially challenging artistic means in engaging the viewer empathically. I will advance arguments to challenge fixing memory in place and time while also arguing for the place of smaller, more personal expressions of remembrance. My studio practice incorporates pertinent psychological aspects such as postmemory and trauma-induced forgetting in the form of absence, and considers the work of key artists. This studio work investigates materiality – as both traditionally employed in memorial culture, such as metal and stone - and other forms including textiles and more fugitive examples such as hair and the use of fire. The relevance of time, memory and ritual are also evident in this work as well as in the thesis. Although informed by personal, familial experience – often conveyed through my use of family possessions - my works appeal to broader aspects of memorial culture, engaging in customs and rituals and universal themes of loss and grief.

▼ This work seeks to provide new insight into understanding how the Lucanian sanctuaries were conceived, built, and used during a chronological period which ranges from the fourth century B.C. to the first century A.D. Within this time, the end of the third century B.C. and the bloody events of the Hannibalic war represented a crucial turning point for the Lucanian communities, concomitant with more infiltration of the southern peninsula by Rome. The last two centuries B.C. are therefore generally neglected in literature as a period of decline. The basic line of thought of this research is that changes in function and form of sanctuaries reflect political, socio-economic and cultural transformations and development of those communities who built and frequented them. The function of the sanctuaries went well beyond the merely religious, for they also functioned as gathering, political and economic centers. The evidence used in this thesis was mainly archaeological, and therefore the analysis of the realia represents the starting point and grounds for historical reconstructions. Archaeological data are diachronically analyzed at different levels: topographic location and relationship of sanctuaries with inhabited settlements, architectural structure and spatial organization of the complexes, and systems of votive offerings. During the fourth and the third centuries B.C. the picture of the Lucanian sanctuaries appears at a first glance quite homogeneous, as the cultural expressions of the Lucanian communities derived from the same models. However, archaeological evidence does not support the theory regarding the existence of a collective sanctuary which belonged to the Lucanians as a whole ethnos, as has been hypothesised for the Rossano di Vaglio sanctuary. After the end of the third century B.C. archaeological evidence from the sites under scrutiny attests that the sanctuaries continued to be used, despite the abandonment of the surrounding inhabited settlements. Nevertheless, such continuity did not mean full frequentation of the sanctuaries, as the majority of them noticeably contracted. Thus the second century B.C. is greatly under-represented at the archaeological level, although in some cases a revival is attested during the first century B.C. In this scenario, the only sanctuary which experienced a phase of revitalization during both of the last two centuries B.C. was the Rossano di Vaglio complex, as it became the point of reference for a new, specifically Roman, territorial entity, the praefectura of Potentia. This analysis, therefore, is a further contribution to current studies concerning the transformations which occurred in Italy in conjunction with the rise of Roman power, the conquest of Italy, and the consequent diffusion of hegemonic culture.

Professional Doctorate - Doctor of Business Administration (DBA)

This purpose of this study is to measure the voluntary disclosure of intellectual capital information in Hong Kong initial public offering (IPO) prospectuses for companies that listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange in 2008 and 2009. Content analysis was conducted in calculating the disclosure score, which was based on an intellectual capital (IC) framework with 81 items. Correlations and regressions were used to test the relationships between disclosure index, underpricing, and subcategories of intellectual capital with different variables including retained ownership, auditor reputation, sponsor prestige, solicitor prestige, leverage, executive compensation, gross proceed amount, age, size, partial allocation of proceeds to research and development area, managerial forecast, and pre-listing profitability. Eight hypotheses were developed to test the relationships between these variables with underpricing (H1), intellectual capital disclosure (ICD) (H2), human resource capital (H3), strategic capital (H4), customer capital (H5), information technology capital (H6), process capital (H7), and research and development capital (H8). The results showed an average of 9.99% for underpricing and an average disclosure score of 27.94% for the two years. Hypotheses 1, 2, 4, 5, and 6 were accepted as the independent variables were not found to have any significant influence on underpricing, IC disclosure, strategic capital disclosure, customer capital disclosure, or information technology capital disclosure. Hypotheses 3, 7, and 8 were rejected, which stated that the reputation of the auditor had significant influence on human resource capital; that the company’s age had significant associations with process capital; and that executive compensation, company size, and proceeds directed to research and development had significant relationships with research and development capital. Since the content analysis was conducted by one person, the results may not be completely objective, and the quality of disclosure had not been taken into the score calculation. The results may provide insights that assist local regulatory bodies to formulate regulations on mandatory information disclosure or on drafting guidelines on voluntary disclosure for IPOs.

▼ My dissertation focuses primarily on credit markets from a corporate finance perspective, with a concentration on corporate bonds and security offerings. My dissertation consists of three essays. Essay One is titled “Underpricing of Corporate Bond Offerings: Evidence and Determinants”; Essay Two is titled “Calculating Abnormal Returns in Bond Market Event Studies”; and Essay Three is titled “Bond Market Reaction to Earnings Surprises and Post Earnings-Announcement Drift”. My research is partially motivated by the 2007/2008 financial crisis, which highlighted the importance of sound credit markets. In recent years, the Federal Reserve policy has pushed base interest rates to record lows, which has helped fuel trillions of corporate-bond issuance activities. “Underpricing of Corporate Bond Offerings: Evidence and Determinants” examines whether and to what extent newly-issued corporate bonds are underpriced. The availability of the TRACE database, which contains comprehensive secondary market bond transaction prices, enables me to measure bond underpricing as the return from the offering price to the secondary market price immediately after the issue. This measure of underpricing is largely adopted by equity offerings literature. Whereas other recent studies find evidence of underpricing only for speculative grade bonds and/or initial public issues, I find significant underpricing for corporate bonds across all rating classes including investment grade bonds and seasoned offerings. My results raise questions concerning the efficiency of capital raising process in the bond market. “Corporate Bond Market Event Study Methods” examines issues in the construction of corporate bond event studies using bond transaction data. Procedures used in studies to date have relatively low power to detect an event impacting bond prices. We show that this low power is largely due to the substantial heteroskedasticity in bond returns and infrequent trading. Focusing on handling these obstacles, we propose tests that yield considerably higher power. The essay “Bond Market Post-Earnings-Announcement Drift” examines the bond market post-earnings announcement return patterns. While post-earnings announcement drifts (PEAD) is, as Fama put it, the granddaddy of all market anomalies in the equity market, whether PEAD exists in corporate bond market is understudied. We find evidence of bond market PEAD following especially positive earnings surprises, suggesting that negative information gets impounded into bond prices more efficiently than positive information. We further find that bond market PEAD appears to be driven by illiquidity, which we interpret as evidence that bond market efficiency is likely hampered by lack of liquidity. ▼ “Forgetting Ntaba kaNdoda”: Reciting Performative Memories at the Ntaba kaNdoda Monument serves as a theoretical examination of the Ntaba kaNdoda Monument as a commemorative marker. My mini-thesis unpacks the notions of memory and performative memorialisation at a nationalist memorial in the former Ciskei by examining the concepts of place, memory and memorialisation, which are theoretically integral in my professional practice. This research initiates an investigation into the effects on memory in a situation where the construction of the Monument disrupted an efficacious memorialisation by the communities of Ntaba kaNdoda. In my accompanying MFA exhibition Forgetting Ntaba kaNdoda, I explore notions of place, memory and memorialisation through installations of a variety of photographic processes that are based on what I call ‘de-monumental’ and performative monuments (Widrich2014). The written component of my MFA submission relates directly to my professional art practice, developing and situating it within a relevant context. In my mini-thesis, I consider photographers working with notions of place, memory and memorialisation. Lebohang Kganye and Nassim Rouchiche’s works retrace and recall past memory in the present, while David Goldblatt and Cedric Nunn, who have photographed the Ntaba kaNdoda Monument, point the viewer to the values and histories of the communities most affected by colonialism and apartheid. These photographers’ works operate as mnemonic devices that seek to translate a lived experience at a particular place. I use Widrich’s (2009; 2014) conception of “performative monuments”, Lippard’s (1997) “sense of place” and Nora’s (1989) “lieu[x] de mémoire” and “milieux de mémoire” in approaching my professional art practice and my research into the Ntaba kaNdoda memorial. Using these entwining nodes of theories in formulating what I term ‘demonumentalisation’ in my photography practice at the Ntaba kaNdoda Monument, my photography functions as both performative memorialisation and de-monumentalisation. Remembrance, using photography as a vehicle to represent this notion at Ntaba kaNdoda, transcends the materiality of the Monument. My exhibition, in conjunction with this mini-thesis, therefore reframes and reconfigures theNtaba kaNdoda Monument as a multiplex memory place.

Историја уметности-Историја архитектуре / History of Art-History of Architecture

У овом раду, српска архитектура 1935-1941. размотрена је на примеру њена три главна тока – профаном, сакралном и меморијалном. Мада су били развијени у истом друшт- веном амбијенту, на истом националном простору, ови токови били су вођени разли- читим градитељским циљевима. Према томе, приступљено је истраживању чинилаца који су утицали на формулисање архитектонских токова у позном периоду међуратног доба. Анализиран је утицај заступљених културних, просветних и социјалних фактора на формирање одређених градитељских програма. Термином „токови“ означене су различите појаве и доктрине унутар корпуса српске ар- хитектуре 1935-1941. Како су „токови“ упућени на „српску архитектуру“, потребно је осврнути се на значење овог термина у контексту теме истраживања. Под српском архи- тектуром, подразумевана је архитектура са територија Бановина Краљевине Југославије које су делом или у целини припадале данашњој Србији, или деловима других држава и територија које већински насељавају Срби. Како би се пресек српске архитектуре 1935-1941. приказао у што прегледнијем виду, коришћена је методолошка конструкција која је обухватила функционалну поделу за- сновану на типолишким и хронолошким обрасцима. Широк опсег и слојевитост теме овог истраживања, захтевали су да методолошки приступ буде прилагођен садржају рада, коришћеним изворима и грађи. У циљу да се омогући методолошка конзистетност у тумачењу разнородних токова и појава у српској архитектури позног међуратног доба, коришћена је архивска, техничка, фототечка, хемеротечка, историографска и периодич- ка грађа, и теренска истраживања. Методолошки апарат заснован је на више приступа, фактографском који је базиран на класификацији извора и аналитичком којим су ови из- вори тумачени. Поред тога, коришћени су методи политичке и културне историографије, због чињенице да је српска архитектура у великој мери зависила од друштвено-поли- тичких параметара који су били успостављени у време намесничке власти кнеза Павла Карађорђевића 1935-1941...
