▼ The accounting profession is one of many around the world that has adopted a competency-based framework for professional certification. Based on recommendations of the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC), professional accountants must demonstrate a minimum level of proficiency in a set of requisite competencies. Despite such emphasis on competency development, there is little research on the usefulness of these competencies, the extent to which they are used in practice, or the manner in which they are developed, especially in the context of the Canadian professional accountant. Since the 1990s, work by a number of academics (Bolton, Brown, & McCartney, 1999; Brown, 1993, 1994; Brown & McCartney, 1995, 2004; Crawford, 2010; Tubbs & Schulz, 2006) suggests a set of overarching skills, or meta-competencies (MCs), that are necessary to effectively apply other competencies. MCs are a set of cognitive, personal, and interpersonal skills, abilities, and capacities that an individual may develop (Brown, 1994; Brown & McCartney, 1995) and which are closely tied to the application of professional “judgment, intuition and acumen” (Brown, 1994, p. 292). Thus, MCs are a central consideration in the development of professionals and the maintenance of their status as such. Professional associations have traditionally focused on developing employer- specified knowledge or technical competencies through formal programs of rigorous study, but have, to date, paid little attention to understanding what influences the development of MCs, especially in the context of formal versus workplace-based experiential learning. This research examines the role of one such professional association — the Certified Management Accountants (CMA) of Canada — in the PROFESSIONAL ACCOUNTING EDUCATION AND META-COMPETENCIES vi development of eight key MCs previously identified and conceptualized by Azevedo, Gomezlj Omerzel, Andrews, Higson, Caballero, and Frech (2012): influencing and persuading, teamwork and relationship building, critical and analytical thinking, self and time management, leadership, ability to see the bigger picture, presentation, and communication. In addition, interrelationships between other personal and organizational factors that may influence the development of specific MCs were also explored. Four key findings emerged from the study. First, by building on prior research related to the identification and measurement of a university MC expectations gap, the study shows CMA professional education program (PEP) does appear to bridge the university graduate MC expectations gap for some MCs; however, CMAs may overestimate their ability to see the bigger picture. Second, it was found that the most significant influences on the development of various MCs were demographic factors and learning environments. Prior education, industry, job tenure, and extracurricular activities, however, did not seem to influence the development of MCs to the same extent as other factors. A programação concorrente é cada vez mais utilizada nos sistemas atuais com o objetivo de reduzir custos e obter maior eficiência no processamento. Com a importância da programação concorrente é imprescindível que programas que implementam esse paradigma apresentem boa qualidade e estejam livres de defeitos. Assim,diferentes técnicas e critérios de teste vêm sendo definidos para apoiar a validação de aplicações desenvolvidas nesse paradigma. Nesse contexto, a geração automática de dados de teste é importante, pois permite reduzir o custo na geração e seleção de dados relevantes. O uso de técnicas meta-heurísticas tem sido uma área de grande interesse entre os pesquisadores para geração de dados, pois essas técnicas apresentam abordagens aplicáveis a problemas complexos e de difícil solução. Considerando esse aspecto, este trabalho apresenta uma abordagem de geração automática de dados para o teste estrutural de programas concorrentes em MPI (Message Passing Interface). A meta-heurística usada foi Algoritmo Genético em que a busca é guiada por critérios de teste que consideram características implícitas de programas concorrentes. O desempenho da abordagem foi avaliado por meio da cobertura dos dados detestes, da eficácia em revelar defeitos e do custo de execução. Para comparação, a geração aleatória foi considerada. Os resultados indicaram que é promissor usar geração de dados de teste no contexto de programas concorrentes, com resultados interessantes em relação à eficácia e cobertura dos requisitos de teste.

Concurrent programming has been increasingly used in current systems in order to reduce costs and obtain higher processing efficiency and, consequently, it is expected that these systems have high quallity. Therefore, different techniques and testing criteria have been proposed aiming to support the verification and validation of the concurrent applications. In this context, the automated data test generation allows to reduce the testing costs during the generation and selection of data tests. Metaheuristic technique has been widely investigated to support the data test generation because this technique has presented good results to complex and costly problems. In this work, we present an approach to the automated data test generation for message passing concurrent programs in MPI (Message Passing Interface). The generation of data test is performed using the genetic algorithm metaheuristic technique, guiding by structural testing criteria. An experimental study was conducted to evaluate the proposed approach, analyzing the effectiveness and application cost. The results indicate that the genetic algorithm is a promising approach to automated test data generation for concurrent programs, presenting good results in relation to effectiveness and data test coverage.

▼ Injury or degeneration of rotator cuff tendon leads to rotator cuff disease (subacromial impingement syndrome and rotator cuff tears). Shoulder pain – pain in the upper arm close to the deltoid muscle insertion has been reported as the most common symptom for subacromial impingement syndrome and rotator cuff tears. However, the current state of evidence on treatment effectiveness of rotator cuff disease is indeterminate. The shoulder function is essential for many of the physically demanding tasks that firefighters perform on the fire ground. For fire services and firefighters, the preservation of active duty is critical for their continued service to their communities. However, the prevalence of shoulder pain among Canadian firefighters has not been synthesized. Further, high quality randomized clinical trials (RCTs) provide the highest level of evidence and assist in clinical decision making. The International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) recommendation of RCT trial registration in public trials registry has been made to improve the reporting, transparency, rigor and reproducibility in RCTs. However, there is a paucity of evidence on the proportion of RCTs with proper trial registrations in the field of rehabilitation therapy. Therefore, the purposes of this thesis were 1) to assess the effects of arthroscopic versus mini-open rotator cuff repair surgery on function, pain and range of motion at in patients with rotator cuff tears; 2) to quantify the effects of surgical vs conservative interventions on clinical outcomes of pain and function in patients with subacromial impingement syndrome; 3) to assess the prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) among Canadian firefighters, 4) to examine the proportion of RCTs that were reported to have been prospectively, retrospectively registered or not registered in the field of rehabilitation therapy, and 5) to use the synthesized evidence to inform the design of a single center (fire-station), investigator-blinded, randomized, 12-month, parallel-group, superiority trial for the evaluation of the efficacy of a shoulder exercises on clinical outcomes in firefighters with shoulder pain. From the existing literature, we found evidence that both arthroscopic and mini-open techniques to rotator cuff repairs with post-operative rehabilitation exercises were effective in improving clinical outcomes of function, pain and shoulder range of motion in patients with rotator cuff tears. However, the between-group differences in outcomes were too small to be clinically important. The effects of surgery plus physiotherapy (exercises) vs physiotherapy (exercises) alone on pain and function were too small to be clinically important at 3-, 6-months, 1-, 2-, 5- and ≥ 10-years follow up. This further highlighted that rehabilitation exercises be considered as the first treatment approach in patients with shoulder pain. ▼ Small to Medium Enterprises (SMEs) need to use Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) to enhance their business processes to become competitive in the global economy. When an information system is introduced to an organisation it changes the original business environment thus changing the original requirements. This in turn will change the processes that are supported by the information system. Also when users get familiar with the system they ask for more functionality. This gives rise to a cycle of changes known as co-evolution. In addition, SMEs have budget constraints which make the problem associated with co-evolution worse. One solution to overcome this situation is to empower end-users to develop and maintain the information systems. Within the above context the work presented addresses the following research question: “How to support SME end-users to develop and / or maintain Web applications to support their business processes?” There are two main components to this question: What are the requirements of a suitable end-user development approach for SMEs and how to create the Web applications based on the requirements. The requirements of a suitable end-user development approach can be established by identifying the different types of Web applications required by SMEs, the capabilities of end-users in relation to developing and / or maintaining Web applications and how they conceptualise the Web applications. The literature review is conducted to discover different types of Web applications required by SMEs and to identify a suitable end-user development approach and tools that can support the development of these various types of Web applications. According to the literature survey, the main types of Web applications required by SMEs can be categorised as information centric Web applications (Simple Web sites which focus on effective presentation of unstructured information), data intensive Web applications (the focus is on efficient presentation and management of structured data such as product catalogue) and workflow intensive Web applications (The focus is on efficient automation of business processes such as an order processing system). The literature on end-user development shows that the existing end-user development approaches are focused on specific types of Web applications. The frameworks and tools in the Web development discipline mainly target experienced Web developers. Therefore a gap is identified as “there are limited end-user development approaches for developments of different types of Web applications which are required by SMEs to IT enable their businesses’”. The capabilities of SMEs in relation to Web application development were identified based on a study conducted with a group of SMEs. This study first surveyed the SMEs experience and knowledge in relation to Web application development and their attitude towards end-user development. Then their capabilities relating to Web application development were studied in a hands-on session to develop a Web site. ▼ This research study investigated the effects of Supplemental Educational Services (SES) on student outcomes. A secondary focus evaluated the strengths and weaknesses of specific program services, and offers findings concerning SES provider contributions to student outcomes. Data were collected, ex post facto, from two district SES providers. Learning gains on academic assessments for reading and mathematics, pre-test and post-test scores for mathematics, survey responses, and observations produced from 2004-2007 were used in this investigation. The evaluation consisted of eight samples which were representative of SES students in Ohio. SES were offered, in-house, by school districts functioning as providers. This study yielded relevant and applicable findings regarding student participation in SES, student achievement, and provider practices. A meta-analysis was conducted to investigate the relationship between student achievement gains in reading and participation in SES. Six studies were used in the meta-analysis with a total of 395 participants. The combined weighted effect size was r = 0.48, which Cohen (1992) considers to be a medium effect. A meta-analysis was conducted to investigate the student achievement gains in math. Two studies were used in the meta-analysis, with a total of 136 participants. The combined weighted effect size was r = 0.04, which Cohen (1992) considers to be a statistically insignificant. The meta-analysis provided evidence that SES has the potential to affect student learning outcomes in reading when implemented according to the provider standards outlined by ODE. The effect size indicated that participation in SES may produce a medium effect on learning outcomes, especially in the content area of reading. Learning gains were compared to parent survey responses and indicated that communication was a main element in increased student achievement. This finding was replicated in the qualitative analysis of administrative, teacher, and parent surveys. Classroom observations supported the premise for tutoring to increase student achievement by students having more one-on-one access with teachers. ▼ La ricerca prende l’abbrivio dalla constatazione della crescente importanza acquisita, nel panorama delle fonti penalistiche, dal fenomeno dell’autonormazione: prodotto del diritto penale post-moderno consistente nell’autoimposizione, da parte dei destinatari stessi della norma, di precetti comportamentali in chiave criminal-preventiva. Oltre al ruolo ambivalente del principio di legalità penale (effetto e causa, al contempo, del fenomeno qui preso in considerazione), l’interesse del penalista per l’approfondimento scientifico del fenomeno è sollecitato dal potenziale che quest’ultimo rivela come alternativa (sostitutiva o integrata) rispetto al diritto penale. Il primo capitolo è dedicato alla ricostruzione delle cause che hanno dato origine al fenomeno, all’uopo ripartite in due macro-categorie: (i) le cause di ordine generale, per l’enucleazione delle quali è stata condotta una ricerca che spazia nelle materie sociologiche, economiche e giusfilosofiche; (ii) le cause di natura giuridica, che sono state investigate considerando sia le manifestazioni comuni all’intero ordinamento giuridico, sia quelle specifiche della penalistica, in cui la crisi del principio della riserva di legge e il declino del diritto penale classico assumono un’importanza cruciale. Nel secondo capitolo, il focus dell’analisi si concentra sulla dimensione strutturale del paradigma autonormativo per come emerso nelle sue principali manifestazioni e nelle concettualizzazioni teoriche maturate soprattutto grazie all’approfondimento riservato al fenomeno della Self-Regulation dagli studiosi di area anglosassone. La paradigmatica dell’autonormazione viene scrutinata tanto nelle sue singole componenti costitutive statiche, quanto nei suoi moti dinamici come strategia regolatoria all’interno dell’ordinamento. La ricerca si sposta nel terzo capitolo dalla struttura alla funzione, con l’obiettivo di ricavare i criteri di politica-criminale strumentali all’impiego dell’autonormazione nel sistema penale. A tal fine, sono state esplorate le possibili relazioni interordinamentali di raccordo tra sistemi autonormativi e ordinamento statale, applicando una metodologia mutuata dall’impostazione di Santi Romano ma ambientata sul terreno del diritto penale e delle sue alternative. Nel quarto capitolo l’indagine si rivolge verso i più eminenti esempi di autonormazione manifestatisi nell’ordinamento italiano: i modelli organizzativi ex D. Lgs. 231 del 2001; i piani per la prevenzione della corruzione nella P.A.; le linee guida medico-chirurgiche per lo svolgimento delle attività sanitaria. Oltre a una disamina ricognitiva della disciplina di questi sub-sistemi normativi, i tre banchi di prova vengono scandagliati in chiave struttural-funzionalistica alla luce dei criteri di analisi illustrati nel secondo capitolo e ricavati nel terzo.
