▼ Responding to the need to fill the research gap in the area of museum integrated marketing communication, the study investigated the planned, unplanned, product and service messages of selected museums in South Africa. These selected museums were the Ditsong and Iziko clusters of museums in the Gauteng Province and the Western Cape Province respectively. The clusters were selected because they are the biggest clusters of museums in the country.
In an attempt to fill the research gap, the goal of the study was to develop and present an integrated marketing communication framework for the selected museums. In order to realise the goal of the study, four objectives were set. Consistent with the first objective chapter 2 analysed the South African cultural tourism sector. In this regard, the literature review revealed that South Africa’s cultural product offering is multifaceted with arts, cultural villages, literature, battlefields, museums, heritage sites nd religion comprising the main tourist attractions. Moreover, the literature review revealed that the two clusters of museums offer diversified product portfolios.
The second objective was achieved in chapter 3 by analysing integrated marketing communication by means of a literature review. The literature review revealed that IMC is a logical structure of developing communication strategies. An organisation should control (planned) or influence messages (unplanned, product, service) messages to ensure message consistency and maximum communication impact. In simple terms, an organisation should strive to match its brand promise made through planned messages with actual performance as reflected in its product, service, and unplanned messages.
The third objective was to analyse empirically the planned, unplanned, product and service messages of the Ditsong and Iziko clusters of museums. The results of the empirical phase of the study were presented in chapter 4. Following a mixed methods research approach, the first component of the empirical phase involved in- depth interviews with the marketing managers of the museum clusters while the second component involved a survey of visitors to the clusters. The qualitative data was analysed by establishing themes which had emerged from the interviews with the marketing managers. The quantitative data was analysed using the SPSS programme. In order to establish the relationships between the variables, a factor analysis was conducted. In addition, T-tests and ANOVAs were also conducted. The factor analysis produced three factors namely, factor 1: Above-the-line media, factor 2: Internal and external marketing and factor 3: Marketing public relations. The t-test and ANOVAs revealed that the respondents across age, province of residence, visitor retention and educational level rate service messages the most highly of all the IMC messages. On the whole, the empirical study revealed that both the participants and the respondents share the same views on what should be done in terms of the planned, unplanned, service and product…

▼ A company’s success is predominantly measured by how
well it does financially. Management and shareholders are
interested in increased production and profits. In order to
increase the profit margin, the issue of productivity needs to be
addressed. Research had shown that there is a correlation between
job satisfaction and productivity (Clark, 2003:1; Javed,
Maqsood&Durrani, 2004:7; Syptak, Marsland&Ulmer, 1999:26).
Sugarbird, a division of Pioneer Foods Pty (Ltd), one of South
Africa’s leading food manufacturers, has embarked on integrating
the Mission-Directed Work Team programme (MDWT programme) into
Sugarbird’s daily operating activities. This programme focuses on
the development and establishment of meaningful practices that can
be implemented throughout an organization in order to provide
management and employees with the skills to benchmark themselves
against world-best practices. As the basis of this study the
researcher had chosen applied research, with the aim to evaluate
the impact of the MDWT programme on job satisfaction at Sugarbird
and to answer the following research question: “Does the MDWT
programme have a positive impact on job satisfaction?” The
population considered in this study was the 100 ground-level
workers at Sugarbird. On the day and time the questionnaire was
administered, 79 employees (23 males and 55 females) were present
on site and were included in the study. Before the MDWT programme
was launched in April 2007, an internal climate survey was
conducted which indicated that employees experienced low levels of
job satisfaction and that communication, transparency,
decision-making and acknowledgement were issues that needed to be
addressed. For the purpose of this study a questionnaire was
designed to determine whether the MDWT programme had an impact on
these variables. The results of the study indicated that the MDWT
programme does have a positive impact on job satisfaction and that
employees have taken ownership of this initiative. Employees are in
general satisfied with the communication strategies within
Sugarbird and it is positive to note that the majority of employees
trust their supervisors. The majority of employees stated that they
are satisfied with the manner in which transparency at Sugarbird is
dealt with. An overwhelming majority of employees think that the
opinion of workers is important in decision-making regarding
day-to-day activities. When focusing on general opinions of
employees, a significant number of employees indicated that their
opinions are not being heard. All employees are in agreement that
Sugarbird has a formal incentive programme that recognises
employees’ achievements and the majority of employees indicated
that Sugarbird does indeed acknowledge positive inputs from
employees. There is however a strong discrepancy between the
acknowledgements of major- versus small accomplishments as
employees are of the opinion that major accomplishments are more
easily recognised. In conclusion, it could be stated that the MDWT
programme do have an impact on the job…

▼ Employee engagement is a phenomenon that has gained increasingly more attention in organisational communication studies and also in the postmodern organisational context. In the postmodern organisational environment, employee engagement focuses more on building relationships with employees than on individual performance. However, the value of internal communication practices to enhance employee engagement within a postmodern organisation has still not fully been explored. The study thus investigated, in accordance with what the literature suggests, a single case to test which internal communication practices are perceived as strengthening employee engagement within a postmodern organisation. Consequently, the study adopted a mixed method research approach utilising three research methods, namely a survey, a focus group and semi-structured interviews, to establish which internal communication practices the management of the organisation must adopt to strengthen employee engagement. The worldview adopted for this study was both the positivist and interpretivist research paradigms.
Findings indicate that because the organisation’s employees’ views are heard, responded to and even form part of the solution, employees become more engaged. In addition, having too many internal communication tools and implementing them without a strategy in place can lead to employees becoming less engaged. Overall, the findings indicate that having a supportive management style, meeting employees’ needs and providing enough opportunities for employees to participate in problem-solving are deemed important for employee engagement. Interestingly, the findings show no correlation between the importance of establishing a good organisational culture and enhancing employee engagement in the organisation. Although the findings cannot be generalised to the larger population, the insight gained could serve as a heuristic for similar organisations to strengthen their employee engagement.; Werknemerbetrokkenheid is ’n verskynsel wat al hoe meer aandag kry in organisatoriese kommunikasiestudies en ook in die postmoderne organisatoriese konteks.

kommunikasiepraktisyn se rol as strategis.

▼ The primary objective of this study was to determine the communication efficacy at arts
festivals with specific reference to the Klein Karoo Nasionale Kunstefees (KKNK). This goal
was achieved by firstly discussing the concept of communication. Secondly, a literature study
was conducted in order to examine the links between communication and events. Thirdly, the
results of the empirical research were discussed, and finally conclusions were drawn from
the research and recommendations were made with regard to the communication efficacy of
events, as well as for further research.
From the literature, communication between the event organisers and the local community
was defined. It was noted that communication plays an integral part in the success of an
event. The host community plays an integral part in events as role players. By establishing
and implementing an effective communication strategy to and from the organisers, the KKNK
will harvest the fruits of a successful cultural event.
Participation, decision making and informing the stakeholders using different types of media
was the means by which the KKNK organisers communicated with the host community.
Positive and negative impacts were measured in a questionnaire. The questionnaire that
sought to measure whether there were significant differences between the two host
communities of Oudtshoorn, and whether there were any differences in the results of the
communication strategy of the organisers when comparing the opinions of the white and of
the coloured communities. The questionnaires were distributed among the community
members of Oudtshoorn, using on a stratified sampling method, and by using a random
sampling method. A total of 258 questionnaires were completed, 110 from the white
community and 148 from the coloured community.
Means and standards deviations were determined following the affected sizes to explore the
differences between the importance of participation and communication in the two
communities, based on the dimensions of the various factors as determined in the factor
analysis. It became clear that there is a small effect (0.2-0.5) on the opinions of the two
communities regarding their being informed, community participation and the communication
from KKNK to the Oudtshoorn community in general. Decision-making and participation
opinions resulted in medium effects. It is the major significance of these effect sizes that the white and coloured communities do not believe they have equal decision making
opportunities and participation.
The chi-square test of significance revealed a small significance (0.1 - 0.3) in the following
areas: overall communication, information received and sought for through different types of
media and importance of the KKNK to Oudtshoorn. A medium significance (0.3 - 0.5) was
measured, and recommendations were made that programs meeting the needs of host
communities, decision making and having the community become active in festival programs
should be initiated.

kommunikasie met potensiële vrywilligers as belangegroep.
speel in potensiële vrywilligers se persepsievorming.

▼ The aim of this research is to affirm the
application of closed-loop optimal control for load shifting in
plants with electricity tariffs that include time-of-use (TOU) and
maximum demand (MD) charges. The water pumping scheme of the
Rietvlei water purification plant in the Tshwane municipality
(South Africa) is selected for the case study. The objective is to
define and simulate a closed-loop load shifting (scheduling)
strategy for the Rietvlei plant that yields the maximum potential
cost saving under both TOU and MD charges. The control problem is
firstly formulated as a discrete time linear open loop optimal
control model. Thereafter, the open loop optimal control model is
converted into a closedloop optimal control model using a model
predictive control technique. Both the open and closed-loop optimal
control models are then simulated and compared with the current
(simulated) level based control model. The optimal control models
are solved with integer programming optimization. The open loop
optimal control model is also solved with linear programming
optimization and the result is used as an optimal benchmark for
comparisons. Various scenarios with different simulation timeouts,
switching intervals, control horizons, model uncertainty and model
disturbances are simulated and compared. The effect of MD charges
is also evaluated by interchangeably excluding the TOU and MD
charges. The results show a saving of 5.8% to 9% for the overall
plant, depending on the simulated scenarios. The portion of this
saving that is due to a reduction in MD varies between 69% and 92%.
The results also shows that the closed-loop optimal control model
matches the saving of the open loop optimal control model, and that
the closed-loop optimal control model compensates for model
uncertainty and model disturbances whilst the open loop optimal
control model does not. AFRIKAANS : Die doel van hierdie navorsing

▼ Fatherlessness is a serious problem in South Africa and statistics show a high rate of children growing up without parents and particularly without a biological father. An estimated nine million children in South Africa are growing up without a father (Statistics South Africa [StatsSA], 2010). Statistics South Africa (StatsSA) (2010) highlights the systematic disappearance of the traditional family structure among South African families. According to their statistics, only 27% of South African children live with their biological parents, which is a further indication of the increasing number of children in South Africa that come from fatherless homes.
In light of the above, the primary goal of the study was to determine teachers‟ perceptions on the impact of fatherlessness on child development. A literature review was undertaken to analyse and describe the effect of fatherlessness on child development from Bronfenbrenner‟s bio-ecosystemic perspective. Secondly, a case study was conducted to qualitatively explore the perceptions of primary school teachers on the effect of fatherlessness on child development. The data was gathered by means of focus group interviews and analysed.
The following findings arose from the empirical study:
* Fatherlessness has an effect on virtually all facets of child development (emotional, social, moral, spiritual, cognitive and physical).
* Fatherlessness implies the absence of a father, whether it is because of death, physical absence (lives and works elsewhere), a lack of involvement (the so-called present-absent father) or that the identity of the father is unknown.
* Fatherless learners need special intervention strategies to support their development.
* The types of intervention strategies include emotional support, opportunities for male gender role identification and community awareness projects on fatherlessness.
* Aside from the material support some teachers offer to the learners, the school does not provide any formal support to fatherless learners. Recommendations are made, in accordance with the findings, in regard to the support of fatherless learners.

▼ Although public relations is seen as a function that contributes to the greater good of society and the performance of an organisation (ref. Grunig, 2006b:3; Grunig, Grunig & Dozier, 2002:xii), the function does not, for various reasons, always deliver on this promise (ref. Gray, 2004:26–27; Grunig et al., 2002:166, 169, 192; Steyn, 2000c:40; Tobin, 2004:56; Van Ruler, 1997:248, 263; 2004a:123). Practitioners and professional bodies from various countries have researched, and tried to overcome the variables negatively influencing practitioners, through various methods. However, no study has provided a comprehensive prioritised list of all the variables influencing practitioners' contribution to organisational performance. In addition none of these actions has led to a sustainable solution for the profession where a critical mass of practitioners can keep the promise of contributing to the greater good of society and the performance of the organisation.
In light of this problem, this study tries to understand how public relations practitioners can enhance their contribution to organisational performance, by examining the variables influencing practitioners in contributing to organisational performance.
The study is framed within the relational, reflective, two–way symmetrical and feminist paradigms, supported by the general excellence theory as meta–theory, and the relationship management and corporate communication role theories. The multidimensional paradigm was specifically selected to accommodate the complex research context (Grunig, 1989:18; 2006a; Valin, 2004).
From theory it was established that public relations contributes to organisational performance by assisting organisations to adapt to their changing environment by providing strategic information from the environment to the organisation that could reduce uncertainty in the organisation's strategic decision–making (Grunig et al., 2002:xi; Raupp & Van Ruler, 2006:18; Steyn, 2000c:27; Valin, 2004). Through this process the organisation's triple bottom line goals are aligned with the realities of the environment in which it operates (Moss et al., 2000:283; van Tonder & van Rheede van Oudtshoorn, 2006:149). This then creates long–term relationships with stakeholders that creates many benefits for the organisation (Grunig, 2006b:3, 6; Grunig et al., 2002:xi, 10, 11; Grunig & Haung, 2000:32; Hon & Grunig, 1999:7–9, 11; Phillips, 2006a:34, 35; 2006b:212). Within South Africa specifically, corporate communication practitioners perform the roles of strategist, manager and technician in order to complete the above tasks (Steyn, 2000b:1–42; 2000c:20–43). The research methodology followed to gather data to answer the General research question, is both exploratory and interpretive. The research started with a literature study, followed by semi–structured interviews with four purposefully selected practitioners and the chairpersons of the two professional bodies (PRISA and IABC) in order to verify the variables identified in literature, and possibly identify new…

▼ ill this study the interpersonal relationships and especially problematic communication within
the family context is of paramount concern. The focus on communication, specifically in the
family system, with a view to Biblically restoring communication in problematic interpersonal
relationships gives the present study validity and value; this is especially true in the context of
family systems in SOllth Africa. The family system in South Africa is under pressure and the.
pastoral care giver is, subsequently, also under pressure to provide accurate counselling and
intercession when needed to the family as a whole. This study aims to satisfY that need in
focusing on restoring communication in problematic interpersonal relationships in the family
system from a Bible-centred (Christian) perspective.
The areas that the researcher investigated centred on communication in problematic
interpersonal family relationships and the way in which communication problems in a particular
family system may contribute to the potential problems that the family as a unit may have to
cope with. The researcher worked with the hypothesis that problematic communiCation in
interfamilial relationships may severely impede the family system in functioning as an allied unit
against the pressures of life (for instance fmancial challenges, work stress). If family
communication patterns were healthy or at least functional, the hypothesis is that all other
problems that a family might face could be handled more easily by a family as an allied unit.
The research question of this study is: How can families, with problematic interpersonal familial
relationships, be counselled from a Biblical perspective with the primary objective of restoring
communication in the family system? Can effective Bible-centred counselling guidelines be set
down and developed from a study of family systems as depicted in Scripture, the human sciences
and an empirical study in order to restore communication in problematic interpersonal
relationships in the family system?
This study shows that problematic communication in interfamilial relationships does impede the
family system from functioning effectively. Interpersonal relationships in the family system is
often complex and communication is only one element present in those relationships which can
have a detrimental effect on good family relationships if communication is strained. The
overarching research aim of the study was to obtain, develop and put forth Bible-centered
praxis-theoretical guidelines on restoring communication in family systems caught up in
problematic interpersonal relationships. The conclusion of this study is that families with
problematic interpersonal familial relationships can be effectively counselled from a Biblical
perspective with the aid of material from the human sciences with the primary objective of restoring communication in the family system.

▼ Since the early 2000s, the tourism industry in South Africa has experienced phenomenal change and, concomitantly, the hospitality industry has also seen significant growth. This growth has been driven by factors such as the increased demand for hospitality in both the leisure and the business markets. The hotel industry has immensely been benefited. The Tourism Business Index’s report released quarterly by the Tourism Business Council of South Africa, indicating that the revenue received from each available room in the hotel sector increased significantly from 2009. Tourism research has revealed that, globally, the hospitality industry is among the largest employers of labour. The hospitality industry, especially the hotel sector, works hand in hand with tourism. Tourists traveling to a destination require accommodation which is generally provided by hotels. If the tourist is to have a good experience, it is vital that the tourist organisation and the hotel communicate so as to exchange information. Integrated marketing communication (IMC) has been described as a concept that many organisations adopt in order both to coordinate the operation of the organisation effectively and to increase the bottom line. In IMC, also creates synergy within an organisation and paves the way for consistent messages to be sent out to the organisation’s target audience.
The aim of this study was to analyse the use of IMC by the View Boutique Hotel in Johannesburg, South Africa. To analyse the IMC at the hotel, in-depth interviews were conducted with both marketing staff and guests. In the aspect of planned messages, the outcome of the study revealed that the hotel uses marketing communication tools on a limited scale and, that to ensure message consistency the manager handles all external communication activities. However, the study also showed that ensuring message consistency should be the responsibility of everyone employed in the hotel. With regard to the product messages, the study showed that guests were negatively disposed towards the food, beverages, entertainment and recreation offered by the hotel. However, the service messages of the study indicated that the hotel’s service quality was good and that the staff were responsive to the needs of the guests. In respect of unplanned messages, the study showed that the hotel was receiving limited coverage from the media and that word of mouth communication was an effective tool in the hotel’s communication toolbox. On the whole, thus, it may be said that the study underscores the centrality of IMC as an instrument for creating and nurturing the relations between the hotel and its quests. It is anticipated that the outcome of this study should provide hotels such as the View Boutique Hotel with guidance in regard to utilising IMC to its full potential to make sure that there is message consistency and also to optimise communication impact.; Sedert die vroeë 2000's het die toerismebedryf in Suid-Afrika 'n merkwaardige verandering ondergaan, en daarmee saam het die gasvryheidsbedryf…

▼ Social Impact Assessment (SIA) identifies the intended and unintended impacts that proposed projects or developments are likely to have on a community or individuals and suggest mitigation measures to prevent these impacts and enhance the positive impacts. The main aim of this dissertation is to explore the significance and the status of SIA in a South African context. EIA is currently in its third era of mandatory practice and with an increasing number of SIAs, it is essential that the practice of SIA should be investigated.
The aim of this dissertation was firstly reached by exploring the perspectives of SIA practitioners in South Africa through a questionnaire. The practitioners’ perspectives showed that despite distinct weaknesses in the practice of SIA, i.e. the lack of a fixed set of guidelines and a shortage of SIA skill in the practitioner community, SIA practice has improved since 1997 with the promulgation of ECA, although there is still room for improvement. Secondly a quality review was conducted on a sample of SIARs in South Africa using an adapted review package. The results revealed relatively weak report quality compared to EIA report quality, but with an improvement, in report quality since 1997. The quality review findings appear to confirm the perspectives of the practitioners regarding the state of SIA practice in South Africa. Despite the weaknesses in the SIA process, it appears that the SIA practitioner community is driven by best practice considerations, and that SIA practice is in line with international trends.
It appears therefore that despite the observed weaknesses, SIA practice in South Africa is relatively healthy. It is recommended that instead of seeking to strengthen SIA practice by means of regulation and guidelines, SIA practitioners should rather ensure that SIA delivers what it is intended to deliver by ongoing pursuance of best practice, and by improved training and skills development.

Üçüncü bölümde, birim küreleri Platonik cisimlerden altı yüzlü, on iki yüzlü ve

▼ Propelled by increased competition with the private sector and other similar organisations, the non-profit sector increasingly faces challenges to create meaningful interactions with stakeholders which, among other benefits, allow for differentiation and the creation of favourable and lasting impressions of the corporate brand. The main research aim of this study was to propose possible elements for a conceptual framework for the integration of non-profit organisations’ social media brand communication. The point of departure was that the achievement of a favourable corporate brand in the non-profit sector could, inter alia, be realised by following an integrated communication approach when utilising social media to communicate with stakeholders. The study is different from prior studies because of its specific interdisciplinary focus on the corporate brand, social media and integrated communication (IC), and the fact that it is merged into one study.
The research into the main contribution of the study was based on a thorough literature review focusing on the following objectives: to explore corporate branding and social media; and to describe elements that could constitute an integrated approach to social media brand communication. During the investigation into the topic, the social media focus of the study was framed on the basis of classical theoretical views, and the theory of and perspectives on human action, symbolic interaction and social presence. The absence of a single set of theoretical assumptions of social media necessitated an inductive reasoning process based on identified key elements of social media.
Subsequent to the literature review, the empirical research gathered invaluable insights from communication professionals in South African non-profit organisations, and who are responsible for communication by means of social media. Finally, and following the measurement of the proposed elements, the objective of proposing possible elements for the integration of social media brand communication and presenting it in a conceptual framework was achieved. The conceptual framework was based on three foundational principles, namely a corporate brand focus and a philosophy of communication integration, underpinned by social media.
The proposed conceptual framework should provide new insights into and contribute to the existing body of knowledge on organisational communication.; Toenemende mededinging in die privaatsektor en tussen ander soortgelyke organisasies, rig ‘n grotewordende uitdaging aan die niewinsgerigte sektor om betekenisvolle wisselwerking met belangegroepe te bewerkstellig, iets wat dit onder andere moontlik maak om te differensieer en om gunstige en blywende indrukke van die korporatiewe handelsmerk te skep. ▼ The purpose of this study was to explore the impact
of the working conditions on the productivity of the nursing staff
in the Midwife&Obstetrical Unit of Pretoria West Hospital. It
was important to establish the working conditions prevailing within
the unit and further to determine which factors related to the
working conditions that influence productivity of the nursing
staff. The findings of the research are intended to provide
guidance to the management in dealing with issues regarding working
conditions so as to improve the productivity of the nursing staff
in the unit. A combination of quantitative and qualitative
approaches was used, specifically the dominant-less-dominant model.
The research approach was predominantly quantitative with lesser
qualitative components incorporated for respondents to give
recommendations intended for management so that improvement in
their working conditions could be implemented Applied research was
relevant in this study as the knowledge gained, can be utilised to
address productivity problems emanating from working conditions.
The aspects of working conditions that impact on productivity were
explored and discussed in the literature study. The literature
study also included a discussion on the cost of work stress on
individuals and organizations. The section concluded with a
discussion on the role of Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) in an
organization. A self-developed questionnaire was used as a research
tool to collect data from the respondents. No sampling was done
because of the small size of the population, hence all members of
the population were included in the study. The findings of the
study were based on thirty-four questionnaires that were returned
by the respondents. The findings were analysed and presented using
tables and graphs which were then interpreted in words. The study
revealed that the majority of the nursing staff in the Midwife
Obstetrical Unit of Pretoria West Hospital perceives their working
conditions as being stressful. The working conditions are
negatively impacting on their well-being and job performance. The
study also revealed that EAP has been implemented at the hospital,
but the services of the programme are not being utilised by the
majority of the nurses in the unit. Based on the findings of the
study conclusions and recommendations were made regarding
strategies to improve working conditions and to increase
productivity. The important limitation of the study was that
through reflections of some of the respondents’ views regarding
sensitive issues were not obtained. Participants were given a
choice of three responses which included remaining neutral.
Unfortunately some respondents chose this option rather than taking
a firm stand.

▼ The purpose of this study was to explore the impact of
the working conditions on the productivity of the nursing staff in
the Midwife&Obstetrical Unit of Pretoria West Hospital. It was
important to establish the working conditions prevailing within the
unit and further to determine which factors related to the working
conditions that influence productivity of the nursing staff. The
findings of the research are intended to provide guidance to the
management in dealing with issues regarding working conditions so
as to improve the productivity of the nursing staff in the unit. A
combination of quantitative and qualitative approaches was used,
specifically the dominant-less-dominant model. The research
approach was predominantly quantitative with lesser qualitative
components incorporated for respondents to give recommendations
intended for management so that improvement in their working
conditions could be implemented Applied research was relevant in
this study as the knowledge gained, can be utilised to address
productivity problems emanating from working conditions. The
aspects of working conditions that impact on productivity were
explored and discussed in the literature study.

▼ The aim of the study was to investigate participants’ views on strategies for combating corruption in Zimbabwean public secondary schools with a view to promoting learner academic achievement.
The study was undertaken at four (4) selected public secondary schools in Harare Metropolitan Province in Zimbabwe. The study adopted the case study as the principal research design and it was informed by the interpretive paradigm; thus, qualitative research approaches were used. Non-probability and probability sampling techniques were adopted in site and participants’ selection. A representative sample of fifty-four (54) participants was used from a target population of three-hundred and eighteen (318) participants. The study was informed by multiple theories. The study found that most of the participants perceived corruption as a major problem affecting the education of learners in most public secondary schools in Zimbabwe. It was found out that the adoption of a vibrant and robust anti-corruption strategy is the solution/panacea to solve this problem of rampant corrupt practices in educational institutions.
The introduction of anti-corruption education in public secondary schools was singled out to be the ‘pivotal’ strategy that policy makers should adopt to disseminate educative anti-corruption information to learners. It was further established that the ‘Zero Tolerance to Corruption’ policy employed by the Government of Zimbabwe should be strongly supported by a multi-agency response to effectively combat corruption within the education system to propel sustainable learner academic achievement.
The study findings further revealed that the public secondary schools lack the necessary anticipated formal anti-corruption education curriculum.
The study concludes that anti-corruption education and the adoption of multi-strategies play a central role in combating corruption. Therefore, there is need to strengthen the anti-corruption strategies and support mechanisms currently being employed in Zimbabwe to successfully provide an environment that supports sustainable learner academic achievement.
In line with the above, the study recommends the introduction of a formal anti-corruption curriculum in Zimbabwean public secondary schools to combat corruption.
▼ Angling as a sport and recreational activity attracts millions of participants worldwide, making it the most popular pastime on the planet. Freshwater bank anglers in South Africa account for approximately 60% of the angling community and contribute billions to the economy.
The freshwater bank angling industry as such is largely informal, with the exception of the small organised angling section. The technical aspects of angling receive an abundance of covering in magazines and increases in popularity through the electronic media. This study focuses on lesser known aspects regarding the angling industry stakeholders and put the activities of South African freshwater bank anglers in perspective. Valuable information was gathered describing the socio-economic profile and various preferences and habits of anglers. The information should form the basis of future studies to formalise the freshwater bank angling industry.
A general and mutual concern among stakeholders for the future sustainability of freshwater angling was identified. The apparent lack of enforcing angling and environmental legislation was singled out as a serious shortcoming in protecting the interests of stakeholders. The study calls for organised angling to engage all stakeholders in a national strategy for developing the structures and creating the momentum to promote and grow this undervalued industry to its potential.

▼ The primary purpose of this study was to determine the social determinants of arts festivals with
reference to the ABSA KKNK. This goal was achieved by firstly analysing the event/festival
phenomenon and the role thereof in event/festival tourism. Secondly, a literature study was
conducted in order to examine the role of the community in supporting events/festivals. And
thirdly, the results of the empirical research were discussed. Lastly, conclusions were drawn
from the research and recommendations were made with regard to the social determinants of
events/festivals.
Literature indicated that events/festivals are central to daily living as perhaps never before and it
can also be said that events/festivals play certain social, economic, cultural and environmental
roles. Events/festivals can have various positive impacts on a community, such as job
opportunities, economical growth and upliftment of the community. However it can also create
various negative impacts such as crime, prostitution and damage to the environment. It is
important to increase the number of positive impacts and decrease the number of negative
impacts. This may improve the support of the community for the event/festival and improve the
sustainability of the event/festival. The support of the community is also influenced by aspects
such as community concern, ecocentric attitudes, community attachment.
These social support determinants were measured by means of a questionnaire, as adapted
from Gursoy and Kendall (2006) and it was therefore the objective of the questionnaire to
analyse the social determinants that that may improve community support. The survey was
distributed in the community of Oudtshoorn in 2007 and the determinants, as well as the
relationship between the determinants and support for the event/festival, were based on
structural equation modeling. A total of 279 questionnaires were completed during the festival.
Respondents were, in general, more positive about the festival than negative. The results of the
structural equation modelling suggest that community attachment and benefits and costs
perceived are the most important social determinants in gaining local support for the ABSA
KKNK. In the case of this study, ecocentric attitudes and issues of community concern did not
influence the level of support given to the event/festival.

▼ This study focuses on the impact of legal representation in general as well as on CCMA proceedings involving unfair dismissals relating to conduction on capacity.
The study also touches on the common law position before the enactment of Labour Relations Act 28 of 1956 and Labour Relations Act 66 of 1995. Rule 25 of CCMA rules which makes provision that legal representation at CCMA arbitration proceedings relating to fairness of dismissal and party has alleged that the reason for dismissal relates to the employees conduct on capacity, the party is not entitled to be represented by a legal practitioner.
The dissertation analyses the effect of this provision on the Constitutional rights to legal representations well as rights relating to fair procedure.
Refusal of legal representation in certain instances is justified in the right of legislative requirements on obligation placed particularly on the arbitrator legislative measures which, justifies refusal of legal representation at CCMA that cannot be imposed without giving consideration to the Constitution.
The study will highlight the South African case on position with regards to legal representation at CCMA.
A literature study will be done using current and researched sources such as textbooks, law journals, and legislation, case law, conferences papers and internet sources. Different rights will be weighed up through literature sources.

▼ This research project was done with the aim in mind
to determine how teachers experience their lived through experience
of job satisfaction in teaching. The qualitative research process
was followed by making use of narrative methods such as narrative
essays, interviews and observations. The essays and interviews
served as basis for data collection purposes. If was essential for
me as researcher, to find the reasons why teachers have negative
and / or positive connotations towards certain teaching facets, and
also to try and determine what their expectations, feelings and
views are about education, so that I can determine how they
experience teaching as a career. This research looked at the
perceptions, viewpoints and experiences of individual teachers in
relation to job satisfaction in teaching. Job satisfaction in
teaching is essential, as it evolves around many different parties.
It is therefore essential that a healthy organisational environment
exists or is created at schools, so that effective teaching can
take place. This research focus on factors that have an influence
on job satisfaction and the implementation thereof to ensure
maximum productivity and job satisfaction amongst teachers. This
includes the role that the principal plays in creating a working
environment where teachers can experience job
satisfaction.

▼ This research project was done with the aim in mind to
determine how teachers experience their lived through experience of
job satisfaction in teaching. The qualitative research process was
followed by making use of narrative methods such as narrative
essays, interviews and observations.

▼ Various modern communication technologies are available to higher education institutions involved in distance education to explore and implement for the effective provision of distance education programmes. The purpose of this study was to investigate the role of m- learning as part of distance education and to develop guidelines for the management of m- learning in an open distance learning model. The aims of this study are thus to determine the role of m-learning in open distance education, identifying challenges to implement m- learning as part of an open distance learning model and finally to develop generic management guidelines to implement m-learning as part of open distance education.
Quantitative research was undertaken using a survey questionnaire to acquire data for this research. The study population included students enrolled for distance education programmes at the NWU and accredited facilitators/lecturers employed by the NWU at tuition centres throughout SA facilitating distance education programmes. A total of 350 questionnaires (100 facilitators/lecturers questionnaire and 250 questionnaires for students) was sent out to all tuition centres to collect data for this research. Two different questionnaires were developed to suit the needs of each group. A total of 80.5% of completed questionnaires was returned.
The literature study of this research included concept clarifications of distance education and m-learning. The need for effective management and organizational structures for the delivery of distance education programmes utilising m-learning were investigated to gain an understanding of the complexities associated with an open distance education modus. The information from the literature study and the empirical section of this research contributed to the development of generic guidelines to implement m-learning as part of an open distance education modus.
In addition, aspects having an influence on the effective delivery of distance education programmes, were part of the questionnaires sent to respondents. These aspects included accessibility to resources utilising mobile devices, flexibility of programme delivery, affordability of programmes, interactivity between all role players in distance education and aspects that could influence anywhere and anytime learning. Furthermore, the different modes of delivering distance education programmes were explained. Challenges and barriers possibly having an influence in the delivery of distance education programmes through m-learning were included in the questionnaires sent out to respondents. Advantages and disadvantages as well as the needs regarding the use of cell phones in the delivery of programmes were identified in order to understand the role of m-learning and identifying relevant management guidelines for the implementation of m-learning.
Evidently, a response from the questionnaires was that the quality of teaching and learning according to the perceptions of m-learning amongst both groups were of more importance to students than with…

▼ The theme in this study is: Communicative channeling of repressed anger in the
Christian life: A pastoral study. The focus is on the pastoral guidance through
communicative channeling of the person who struggles with the destructive
effects of repressed anger, including hidden forms of expression and denial of
anger.
From the interpretive task which consists of perspectives on anger from
adjacent sciences (Chap. 2) the basic function of anger, as a starting point, is
shown as psychological survival. Due to the functioning of the brain, anger as an
emotion is experienced in the subconscious. Anger must be named and identified
in order to accept responsibility for behaviour. Only when responsibility regarding
behaviour is accepted can anger be expressed within the will of God.
From the empirical research (Chap. 3) information was obtained by means of a
case study where a co-worker is involved. Relevant information regarding the
family of origin was obtained and the processing thereof is outlined in a
geneagram. Additional information relating to what can be regarded as her
current family was acquired. The tremendous void left when basic needs are not
met, was identified. The fact that the co-worker was able to express repressed
anger without prejudice was continuously conducive to the therapeutic process.
This resulted in a decrease in destructive discharges of anger.
The normative task provides the opportunity for base theoretical research
(Chap. 4) where it is clear that Scripture does not encourage one to be without
anger as such. Anger provides the opportunity to promote ‘life’, which implies that
the value of anger should be clearly realised, especially from the pastorate. On
the other hand, Scripture clearly provides warnings that anger makes people
vulnerable to sin. Consequently, clear guidelines regarding anger and around
expression of anger is spelled out for man created in the image of God. From a pastoral approach to the emotion of anger (Chap. 5), it is clearly evident
that without anger there really can be no moral concern, which would make the
word a terrrible place. Love, which is regarded as the greatest commandment
from the Christian context, requires empathy and forgiveness. Both empathy and
forgiveness is however not a possibility in the presence of anger.
With regard to the pragmatic task a number of practice theoretical guidelines
was formulated regarding the emotion of anger (Chap. 6). From this it is clear that
healing can only be done through God’s Word, which is His truth. The act of
“listening to anger” can be regarded as the primary therapeutic principle in
respect of anger. Man was created with the ability to think, which makes choices
expected – choices that could lead to True Life. The most important question
that may be asked to the counsellee is: “What do you choose, death or true life?”

▼ Comprehensive management in the neonatal nursery
involves medical treatment of the infant, as well as developmental
care and the provision of guidance, counselling and information to
the family who are part of the decision-making process regarding
the infant’s care. Neonatal communication intervention is of utmost
importance in a country such as South Africa, which has an
increased prevalence of infants at risk for disabilities and where
the majority of these infants live in poverty. Speech-language
therapists fulfil an important role in the neonatal nursery and are
an integral part of the team involved with the high risk neonatal
population. Local literature showed a dearth of information on the
current service delivery and roles of speech-language therapists
and audiologists in neonatal nurseries in the South African
context. From an asset-based perspective it appears that the South
African population receiving services in neonatal nurseries have
unique characteristics. This provides speech-language therapists
with ample opportunity to intervene, providing that intervention is
well-timed in the neonatal nursery context. The country-wide
initiative to implement the evidence-based technique of kangaroo
mother care indicates that speech-language therapists should
recognise its importance and develop communication based materials
and tools to complement this successful neonatal intervention. The
aim of the research was to establish whether speech-language
therapists have needs for assessment and intervention
tools/materials in this context. The study furthermore aimed to
compile a locally relevant neonatal communication intervention
instrument/tool for use by speech-language therapists in the
neonatal nurseries of public hospitals in South Africa in order to
propose a solution to address the shortage of tools in the public
health context. The study entailed descriptive, exploratory
research. During Phase 1, a survey was received back from 39
speech-language therapists and two audiologists in six provinces.
The data revealed that participants performed different roles in
neonatal nurseries, which were determined by the environment,
tools, materials and instrumentation available to them. Many
participants were inexperienced, but were resourceful in their
attempts to develop and adapt tools/materials. Participants
expressed a need for culturally appropriate and user-friendly
instruments for parent guidance and staff/team training on the
topic of developmental care. During Phase 2 a tool for parent
guidance titled “Neonatal communication intervention programme for
parents” was compiled for use by speech-language therapists and
justified by participants’ roles and needs as well as current early
communication intervention (ECI) literature. The programme was
piloted by three participants. Certain suggestions for enhancements
of the programme were made such as providing a glossary of terms,
adapting the programme’s language and terminology, and providing
more illustrations. The programme complied with the guiding
principles…
