▼ The massacres of Chios and the ensuing capture of the Christian orthodox inhabitants of the island, constitutes a tragic scar on the face of Modern Greek and European history. The peaceful co-existence of the Christian and Muslim communities of the island until 1822, could, in no way, foreshadow the disaster that followed. The cultural, economic and intellectual blossoming of Chios, resulting, up to a point, from the privileges granted by the Sultan in 1567, a year after the ottoman conquest of the island renders credible the appellation ‘Paradise of the East’, which travelers ascribed to Chios. In this millieu, a special genre of woman was created, the Chian woman, who, during the events of that period, was to suffer a most tragic fate: the capture and loss of her beloved people. The form of coexistence of the Greeks and Turks of Chios, in all its manifestations, is described in the most vivid and expressive way in the folk songs of the island. The tragedy of the capture of the non-combatants, mainly women and children, the relationships between masters and slaves, the attempts at islamization (which was the avowed aim of their masters) are presented through the narrations of the protagonists themselves, leaving no room for doubt, even to the most skeptical researcher, about the reality of the description. At the slave-markets the selling price varied according to the age, the beauty, the robustness and especially the origin of the human merchandise. We have been watching the captives from the very first moments of their arrest, their transportation to the trade-markets of the big cities of the ottoman Empire (mainly Smyrna, Constantinople, Alexandria, Cairo), but also further island, their daily life in the harems and - sometimes- their desperate attempts to escape. Further, we describe the mobilization network for the identification, tracing and liberation of the Chian captives with the assistance of their relatives, of the Patriarchates of Contantinople, Alexandria and Antiocheia and of the network of Chian merchants and the Chian communities in Europe. The re-integration of the Chian captives back into the life of the homeland is a subject of particular interest and is a parameter which has barely been researched into, due to the scarcity of relevant evidence.The efforts by Capodistria, and later by Othon, and the involvement of the Great Powers in the cause of liberating all Greeks captured during the War of Independence are also of particular interest. Despite good intentions, which, in the case of the Great Powers, were undoubtedly linked to their own interests, the results of the efforts for the tracing and liberation of the captives of the Greek War of Independence did not live up to expectations.Unfortunately, slavery was not eliminated in the 19th century and it still exists with victims mainly women and children, as if the blood-stained struggles for human rights never took place. ▼ The role of religion in the construction of peace has often been associated with healing, forgiveness and reconciliation once violence has stopped. The burden of peacebuilding, however, often lies on the shoulders of religious actors while the conflict is still happening. This thesis studies how religious actors have used the construction of social memory as a tool for peacebuilding in a context of thin transition and on-going conflict. It contributes towards our understanding of the relationship between religion and social memory, in the construction of master narratives of suffering after the massacre of Bojayá. The research design followed the approach of the case study method and was conducted through the use of ethnography, interviews, archival research, and the use of secondary data. The thesis explains how initiatives of religious peacebuilding have changed in response to different stages of conflict in Chocó. It argues that religious beliefs, such as social sin and accompaniment, influenced the creation of a wider narrative of social memory that includes not only crimes against human rights but abuses against economic and cultural rights. These beliefs contributed to strengthening a participatory bottom-up process of social memorialisation and peacebuilding. Contrary to official and widely spread narratives of social memory, the local church has contributed to explain violence in Chocó as a crime against humanity. This narrative has served two purposes. First, it aims to instigate a sense of urgency about the conflict that affects Afro-Colombian communities, demanding the intervention of the national civil society to stop the violence in the region. Second, broad narratives of atrocities can prevent the personalisation of violence and targeting individual perpetrators as the source of violence, averting the creation of new cycles of violence. In addition, the social construction of emotions in a religious context can shape the narratives of social memory that encourage the social construction of positive emotions in victims, such as dignity, optimism and happiness. Positive emotions are crucial in supporting a social peace process even before a political peace agreement has been signed. These initiatives of religious peacebuilding were analysed for their contribution to a model of emancipatory peacebuilding, which can expand our understanding of religious peacebuilding and the role of social memory in the construction of peace, by supporting the claims of transformative reparation and social justice from below.

▼ This thesis has two parts: a creative component titled The McMillan Notes; and an exegesis, “Its Roots Must Hold up the Sky”: Danielewski’s House of Leaves and Archived Trauma. The critical component will deal with metatextual depictions of trauma, particularly historical trauma while the creative component will make use of techniques of this kind. The Gippsland Massacres that took place between 1840 and 1850 saw the murder and/or displacement of 2,000 of the Gunaikurnai people. Despite the gravity of the event, the Federal seat of East Gippsland is still named after the perpetrator of the massacres, Angus McMillan. Plaques and statues dedicated to him dot the region. While there have been moves to rename the seat, even from conservative factions, they have yet to be put into action The McMillan Notes refers to ancestral curse narratives to examine the effects of colonialism on the present and could be described as a work of Postmodern Australian Gothic fiction. The McMillan Notes models itself chiefly on Mark Z. Danielewski’s House of Leaves, a notable 2000 Postmodern Gothic novel that parodies academic exegesis to communicate the unrepresentability of trauma. The text’s metafiction is made up of a multitude of layers and framing devices that vie for the reader’s attention, a method employed to communicate the complex and layered nature of trauma itself. The McMillan Notes develops techniques used in Danielewski’s House of Leaves in terms of presenting itself as a critical reflection or exegesis of a metatextual object, utilising a variety of techniques to communicate the unrepresentable nature of intense trauma. The McMillan Notes is also in dialogue with an earlier classic of Postmodernism, Kurt Vonnegut’s Slaughterhouse Five, utilising some of the techniques Vonnegut introduced that Danielewski later refined. This essay acts as both an exegesis of The McMillan Notes and a formal analysis of House of Leaves, outlining which formal elements of Danielewski’s text have been adapted for the creative component as well as offering an examination of the historiographic elements throughout. The methodology will chiefly be concerned with close examination of the text itself but will also refer to a range of secondary sources on the text and relevant theorists. The exegesis will also discuss how postmodern, self-reflexive methods develop a means of communicating neglected historical trauma in defiance of the apparently unrepresentable nature of this trauma. ▼ Terrorism and atrocities have scarred the public memory in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. Three atrocities, the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing, the 1996 massacre at Port Arthur Historic Site in Tasmania, Australia, and the 2002 Bali bombings, had a significant impact on the communities they most affected. How did the differing governments and communities at these sites respond to the sudden loss of life? How were the competing agendas of these groups managed ? Are there shared and distinctive characteristics in the memorialisation of atrocitites across these countries at the turn of the millenium? In responding to these questions, this study analyses cultural differences in memorialisation at contemporary atrocity sites. It examines the differing responses at the case study sites to the planning and the timing of memorials, the engagement of those affected, the memorial designs and the management of the memorials, including tributes. It is an original comparative study of contemporary memorialisation by a heritage professional directly involved in the management of memorials at contemporary atrocity sites. The original research includes the identification of the role the internet in contemporary memorialisation, an in-depth analysis of the memorialisation of the 1996 massacre at Port Arthur Historic Site, and the memorialisation in Bali and across Australia of the 2002 Bali bombings. It extends the current scholarship on the memorialisation of the Oklahoma City bombing through identifying the impact of the internet in the memorialisation and in the timeframe of the analysis through to the 15th anniversary in 2010. The comparative analysis of the management of tributes at all the sites identified issues not previously considered in Australian scholarship: that tributes and the response to them is part of the memorialisation and management of contemporary atrocity sites. A combined research method based on an interpretive social science approach was adopted. A range of methodogies were used, including literature reviews, analysis of electronic material, site visits, unstructured in-depth interviews, and participant-observation at memorial services. Studies on history, memory and memorialisation provided the framework for my analysis and led to an original proposal, that all three sites have shared histories of the memorialisation of war and ‘missing’ memorialisation. ▼ The main purpose of this dissertation is to explore the use of Geographic Information Science (GIScience) and historical Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to study the Armenian Genocide and to contribute to a somewhat limited corpus on the geography of genocide. Issues related to geohistorical data, and possible solutions, will also be discussed in chapters one through five where chapter one is the introduction and chapter five is the conclusion of this dissertation. The three main chapters of my research are chapters two, three, and four described briefly below. Chapter two describes the integration of the Kazarian Manuscript, a narrative of the Armenian Genocide, into a historical GIS illustrating and analyzing the genocide using a stage model as a guiding framework. Models outlining and describing the stages of genocide provide a structured and vetted approach to studying the geography of the processes such as genocide by attrition. Further, this chapter focuses on the processes leading to mass murder and their associated perpetrators as defined within the parameters of stage models. This chapter also links historical GIS to a qualitative, historical source and discusses the uncertainty of place and time when working with past events. Finally, this chapter proposes new stages left out of current models of genocide and contributes to the debate on the processes of genocide. Chapter three explores the spatial aspects of the Armenian Genocide based on data expounded from the Kazarian Manuscript as seen in chapter two. Using a purely qualitative historic manuscript, I designed and built a geodatabase using event and location information pulled from the manuscript. This process uncovered several issues related to the uncertainty and reliability of geohistorical data in general, but also with data on the Armenian Genocide specifically. These uncertainties include the lack of accurate and consistent base maps of Turkey from 1914. My analysis revealed an escalation of violence in 1914 with a peak in 1915 marked by a dramatic increase in events followed by a steady decline of events through 1922. I strove to create a database useful as a starting point to build upon by using additional historical sources such as survivor testimony and oral histories in order to improve on the uncertainties in the data and to expand the database for more meaningful analysis. Chapter four proposes a structure for handling commonly observed uncertainties in geohistorical data, using as case studies two historical GIS projects that interweave historical research with the geography of genocide. The first case involves the ghettoization of Budapest’s Jews during the Holocaust in the second half of 1944. The second case covers the Armenian Genocide spanning most of WWI and several years afterwards. I propose using existing metadata standards as one way of handling the inherent uncertainties of geohistorical sources. ▼ This thesis offers an analysis of eight newspapers published in the greater Sacramento-region during the Gold Rush era of California, 1848-1860. Topics explored include the image of Indians and white settlers in the press, Indian massacres, and the reasons for white-on-Indian violence, proposed solutions to the ???Indian troubles,??? and an examination of John Rollin Ridge???s editorial opinions. A number of historians have addressed the notion that white settlers and gold seekers in California, with the support of the California government, perpetrated genocide upon the indigenous people of the region. Evidence in the Sacramento-region press confirms this assertion in a variety of ways. Additionally, historians have pointed to the reservation program in California as a failed policy. Here again the Sacramento-region newspaper editors offered substantial proof of this assertion. This thesis draws primarily from the editorial writings of eight major newspapers of the Sacramento-region. The cited newspapers include the Daily Alta California, the Marysville Daily Appeal, the Marysville Herald, the Daily National Democrat, the Placer Times, the Sacramento Daily Bee, the Sacramento Daily Union, and the Sacramento Transcript. Additionally, this thesis examines other primary documents including journals, eyewitness histories, and letters. Finally, secondary accounts have also informed the analysis; specifically, I have relied on the works of Albert Hurtado, Robert Heizer, James Parins, George Phillips, James J. Rawls, and James Sandos among others. The thesis concludes that the majority of editors in the Sacramento-region blamed white incursions upon Indian lands as the catalyst for violence in the gold fields. Editors worked to convince readers that the white-on-Indian violence in the diggings was the work of a small minority of white newcomers. Further, most editors supported the creation of a reservation system in the state, although they were critical of the administration of that reservation system once established. ▼ Some scholars have maintained that Martin Luther (1483-1546) began the disagreements over the Christian’s justification by faith or works among commentators on the Epistle to the Galatians. Although acknowledging Luther’s pivotal role in this struggle, I argue that by the time of the Council of Trent (1547), the positions of Roman Catholic and Protestant commentators on Galatians were greatly shaped by the disagreements they had received from the commentaries on Galatians of early Christian and medieval authors. Luther and other Protestants used the minority view interpretations from Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages and recast them into a more coherent framework in order to critique the majority view on this Epistle, namely that in Paul’s rejection of justification by works of the law, he was merely speaking about Jewish ceremonial rites and not the moral law. Using the arguments of the late antique and medieval minority view, Luther argued that Paul was speaking of the observance of the moral precepts of the law of Moses and, especially, the Ten Commandments. Most Roman Catholic commentators after Luther, however, used the arguments of the majority view from the same eras to provide theological qualification to Paul’s aforementioned denial of justification by the works of the law. I document these disagreements among Western commentators from Late Antiquity and the sixteenth century from passages containing Paul’s affirmations of justification by faith (2:16, 3:10-13) and Paul’s statements about the moral law and eternal life (Gal 5:6, 5:21 6:8). This simultaneously broad and in-depth study demonstrates that by turning the previously debatable question of justification by faith or works of the law into a line distinguishing orthodoxy from heresy, sixteenth-century Protestant and Roman Catholic commentators received these earlier commentarial debates and, unlike their medieval predecessors, formulated polarizing interpretations. Martin Luther made public a centuries-old debate that had been carried out silently at the desks of Western commentators on Galatians. This dissertation argues that the Reformation debates over the meaning of this Epistle’s key statements about faith, works and justification had much deeper hitherto unexamined roots in the early and medieval Christian traditions. ▼ Horn Mountain Field is a mid-sized oil and associated gas field located in the northeastern corner of Mississippi Canyon, Gulf of Mexico. Production at Horn Mountain Field declined significantly since 2006 with an increased water cut in most wells. Boost in production is expect with some new wells and mid-life work. To assist the rework of the field and plan for future development, characterization of the reservoir is necessary. This study is based on geologic interpretation of a seismic volume and well log data. A model was built based on the interpreted faults and horizons using PETREL™ software. Horn Mountain field mainly produced from two Middle Miocene sands: J and M sands. J sands were interpreted to be deposited in a relatively confined levee channel with lower Net-to-Gross ratio (N/G; ~15-40%) and M sands formed a confined channel with N/G (20-80%). The field is divided in to three main fault blocks: north fault block (NFB), central fault block (CFB) and eastern fault block (EFB). J sands juxtapose across the fault that separates CFB and EFB where different OWC were identified, which indicates hydrocarbon generated from source rock migrating along major bounding fault to the north, where NFB was charged then subsequently spill to CFB and EFB. It also indicates stratigraphic barrier in J sands. The total deterministic volume is calculated based on a model. The model was built from the well-top depth controlled seismic interpretation, where N/G was calculated based on correlation between seismic amplitude and well log N/G observation and reservoir parameters from well logs. Model based calculation indicates that the recoverable oil is 26 MOBE for J sands and 127 MOBE for M2 sands, which is the main contributor from stacked M sands. Over half of the reserves for both J and M sands are within NFB, and around 30% in CFB. Only one well produced the down-dip portion of M2 from the EFB. There is potentially 4 MOBE from J sand and 22 MOBE recoverable from M2 in EFB, where the 4 MOBE of J sands was not penetrated (tested or produced) based on the data available. Future development of the unpenetrated block should significantly increase the future production with near field development. ▼ The First Amendment religion clause jurisprudences of two United States Supreme Court justices – Felix Frankfurter and Antonin Scalia – find different forms of American public religion constitutional. Frankfurter's jurisprudence applied the Free Exercise Clause weakly, but the Establishment Clause strictly, as exemplified in the cases Minersville School District v. Gobitis, 310 U.S. 586 (1940) and McCollum v. Board of Education, 333 U.S. 203 (1948). Scalia, on the other hand, has interpreted both clauses with deference to government action in most cases, and this is evident in Employment Division v. Smith, 494 U.S. 872 (1990) and McCreary County v. ACLU, 545 U.S. 844 (2005). The originalist interpretive methodology applied by both judges to the religion clauses relies for authority upon leaders from America's founding era such as Thomas Jefferson and George Washington, especially in Establishment Clause cases. Yet, Frankfurter and Scalia do not cite the same founders as authority, and they do not interpret the Establishment Clause in the same manner since Frankfurter has applied it strictly whereas Scalia has applied it weakly. In addition, Scalia has defended his originalist interpretive methodology of textualism in extrajudicial sources whereas Frankfurter's rationale for the originalism he applies to the religion clauses appears in his official opinions. Moreover, Frankfurter's Free Exercise Clause opinions also defer to government action because of his arguments in favor of judicial restraint, and both judges agree that religious liberty is best protected when first cherished and protected by citizens in the democratic process before resort to judicial review. The American public religion deemed constitutional in Frankfurter's religion clause opinions is also more secular in nature in that it does not include belief in God, but elements similar to religious faith such as the secular need for a day of rest, veneration of the American flag, and an appeal to the need for unifying beliefs in society, or what Frankfurter called "cohesive sentiment." Frankfurter reasoned, however, that more specifically religious education programs in public schools were unconstitutional because they would likely create social conflict. Scalia, to the contrary, has found more specifically theistic public religious expressions such as graduation prayers and displays of the Ten Commandments constitutional. This is not only because Scalia finds these expressions of American public religion consistent with and American tradition allowing preference for monotheistic faiths in public acknowledgments of deity, but also because he argues that relatively generic prayers at graduation ceremonies will enhance religious toleration and civility. ▼ This thesis aims to explore the relationship between the science, the philosophy and the esoteric imagination of the American physicist David Bohm (1917-1992). Bohm is recognized as one of the most brilliant physicists of his generation. He is famous for his ‘hidden variables’ interpretation of quantum mechanics. Bohm wrote extensively on philosophical and psychological subjects. In his celebrated book Wholeness and the Implicate Order (1882) he introduced the influential ideas of the Explicate and the Implicate orders that are at the core of his process philosophy. Bohm was also a very close disciple of the Indian teacher Jiddu Krishnamurti (1895-1986), whom he recognized to have had an important influence on his thought. Chapter 1 is a general explanation of what I intend to do, why my research is filling an important gap, introduce the field of Western esotericism as a scholarly subject and suggesting that it offers a fruitful way of approaching the thought of David Bohm. I also explain my research principles and a brief description of the philosophical standpoint from which I am approaching the material. Chapter 2 gives a description of the textual sources I used in my research. This is followed by a comprehensive literature review. Chapter 3 is a biographical essay where I give an account of Bohm’s life, career, works, major ideas and their development, stressing their significance for the development of Bohm’s holistic philosophy and his interactions with the esoteric. This chapter is an introduction to the main ideas of the dissertation. Chapter 4 revisits the genesis of the Causal Interpretation, Bohm’s first attempt to deal with the interpretation of quantum mechanics. I make emphasis on the philosophical developments that gave rise to it. I introduce all the relevant physics and give a detailed explanation of the problem of interpretation and Bohm’s first proposal. Chapter 5 is about the philosophical developments in Bohm’s thought brought by the Causal Interpretation. In particular I examine the influence that G. W. F. Hegel (1770-1831) had on Bohm’s thought and explain why I take the view that this is an esoteric influence. Chapter 6 reviews the developments in Bohm’s thought during the 1960’s. I describe Bohm’s search for radically new concepts in physics and his exchanges with several thinkers ending with his encounter with Jiddu Krishnamurti. Chapters 7 and 8 are devoted to the study of Bohm’s philosophy as he elaborated it after 1960. Chapter 7 concentrates on the idea of the Implicate Order and it also studies the Ontological Interpretation of Quantum Mechanics, Bohm’s last version of his interpretation effort, which is based on the Implicate Order. In chapter 8 I examine Bohm’s theory of how the mind and the body are connected through a ladder of consciousness formed by a series of Explicate and Implicate Orders, and finishes with an exposition of Bohm’s dialogue technique. ▼ This thesis establishes the traditional Jewish interpretative model PaRDeS as the foundation of a new film interpretation method, and suggests a PaRDeS interpretative process that can be used as a guide by other analysts, critics and scholars. PaRDeS is a sophisticated method of analysis that reflects millennia of Judaic explorations of narrative structures, stories, interpretations and commentaries. PaRDeS interpretation encourages dialogues about cinema, and the meaning of films. The PaRDeS method responds to other film analyses in its own interpretative mission to coordinate and integrate multiple levels of meaning. Using PaRDeS in this original way to interpret contemporary films is significant to both Jewish Studies and Film Studies. This thesis extends the investigations of contemporary uses of PaRDeS in Jewish Studies and introduces the method to Film Studies, responding to existing issues of film interpretation in doing so. A multi-level framework of different kinds of meaning differentiates PaRDeS from its contemporary counterparts, and from a tradition of film interpretation that narrows the scope of interpretative interest to ideological perspectives. The originality of the PaRDeS conceptualisation of film meaning, the unique assumptions of the model, and its coordination and synthesis of different interpretative strategies differentiates PaRDeS from contemporary critical perspectives. PaRDeS film interpretation develops important insights about film meaning, and describes specific ways cinema reflects the world that creates and interprets films. Since this is the first time the PaRDeS method has been used to produce formal interpretations of films, there is as yet no established process for doing so. This thesis develops a PaRDeS model of interpretation (Chapter Two) and uses it to generate new insights during the various investigations of different elements of film in the chapters that follow. PaRDeS has never been adapted for use as a modern tool of cinematic investigation before now, and this thesis is necessarily exploratory in its evolution of a new PaRDeS approach to film interpretation. The PaRDeS method is developed in various multi-level interpretations of the following films: The Matrix (Larry and Andy Wachowski, 1999), Clueless (Amy Heckerling, 1995), Josie and the Pussycats (Harry Elfont & Deborah Kaplan, 2001), Taxi Driver (Martin Scorsese, 1976), and Black Swan (Darren Aronofsky, 2010). Ensuite, il était indispensable d’étudier la nature du crime commis envers les Arméniens ottomans en 1915.En plus, est-ce que l’Etat Turc actuel peut-il être responsable d’un crime commis par l’Empire ottoman, selon le principe de la succession d’Etats en droit international, surtout que l’Etat Turc n’était créé qu’en 1923 ? Et en cas de l’existence de cette responsabilité, est-ce que l’Arménie a droit à l’action en responsabilité, surtout qu’au moment de la perpétration du crime, il n’y avait pas un Etat Arménien ? Les victimes étaient des ressortissants de l’Empire ottoman mais d’origine arménienne. The main purpose of my thesis is to study all the legal issues concerning the 'Armenian question'.First, the existence of the elements of the crime of genocide in 1915 at the conventional international law, made our first question to consider. ▼ The high Christology and unique pneumatology of John’s gospel has often eclipsed the apostle’s teaching on the relationship of the believer to Christ and the Father through the Spirit in Johannine studies. This dissertation seeks to fill this gap by providing an exegetically-focused treatment of sonship in the Johannine corpus that gives special attention to the role of the Spirit in bringing God’s children to participate in the life of the Son and his relationship with the Father. The central thesis is that John, in a manner distinct from Paul’s metaphor of adoption, presents the sonship of believer’s as the result of the Spirit’s work of regeneration out of which flows faith and participation in Christ’s life as Son. At the heart of this study are eight Johannine passages––John 1:12–13; 3:3–8; 14:16–23; 20:17; 1 John 3:1–3, 24; 4:13; and Revelation 21:7––that provide the exegetical lens to view the Spirit of Sonship in John. Although the exegesis of chapter 3 forms the foundation of study, chapter 2 considers the eight Johannine passages through the eyes of John Calvin and John Gill––both instrumental in advancing the theology of the Spirit and providing an exegetical foundation for their theology. Chapter 4 identifies three primary themes––obedience, love, and life––drawn from the eight passages and briefly synthesizes and correlates these themes with other key texts in the Johannine corpus. A brief survey of literature on sonship is reviewed in chapter 1, setting the landscape to which this dissertation seeks to contribute. By focusing on the role of the Spirit the persons of the Father and Son are not diminished, but brought into clearer focus, which is consistent with the Spirit’s ministry to glorify the Son (John 16:14). The Father is the divine initiator, the Son the divine accomplisher, and the Spirit the divine mediator of every spiritual reality that is in and through the Son to the believer. ▼ ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The dissertation explores the dynamic nature and purpose of the first letter to the Thessalonians – probably one of the earliest Pauline letters. It seems to provide a significant account of the formation of identity and ethos in early (Gentile) Christian communities in the Roman Empire. The study is particularly interested in how Hebrew (Old Testament) Scriptures function in the letter, since it appears that echoes of these writings constitute a major feature of Paul’s discourse (with primarily Greco-Roman believers). On the basis of an exegetical analysis of the letter, the dissertation concludes by inviting present-day readers to revisit the discursive processes represented by it. On the one hand, the letter testifies to the shaping of the Thessalonian faith community’s identity and lifestyle. On the other hand, it draws its readers into its implied transformative power. In the final analysis, these processes are briefly appropriated in the context of contemporary moral challenges in South Korea. Recent scholarship on the Thessalonian correspondence focused on probable influences of the Hellenistic rhetorical environment on Paul’s letter-writing. Despite valuable contributions of this approach, the study raises critical questions regarding its methodological relevance. First, scholars seem to have straitjacketed Paul’s argumentation (primarily) into Hellenistic rhetorical conventions. Second, as a result of this approach, the significance of Paul’s Jewishness has to a large extent been neglected. Concentration on processes of Paul’s literary production has devoted little attention to ways in which Paul’s scriptural orientation crucially functions in his discourse. Third, by (mainly) focusing on Paul’s rhetorical strategies in a first century context, rhetorical critics have not dealt adequately with the pragmatic dimension of Paul’s letter – also for today. By suggesting that New Testament scholarship move beyond the limitations of the previous approach, the dissertation acknowledges the multidimensional nature of Paul’s discourse (in terms of syntactic, semantic and pragmatic elements). It takes significant additional aspects into account in order to complement previous research, but also to overcome some of its limitations. Accordingly, the project focuses on the following aspects: (1) the formative influence of social, cultural and religious occasions on Paul’s discourse (both his Jewishness and the Thessalonians’ historical circumstances); (2) the informative role of literary and linguistic elements in 1 Thessalonians; and (3) the text’s transformative power that implicitly impacts the identity-awareness and ethos of the audience. The dissertation examines formulations in Paul’s letter as part of a dynamic process. The important problem encountered was to render a representative and reliable summary account of the vast subject of the meaning of life according to the entire Old and New Testaments in such a way that a proper synthesis thereof could be given within the sphere of one introductory chapter (Chapter 2). The major method implemented in the main part of the thesis was as follows. Firstly, all the passages/verses in which the Johannine terms for life and eternal life (Greek: rdytj and Mil ait'ovtog) occur in the Gospel of John and in 1 John, were exegeted within their respective immediate and broader contexts. Secondly, the most important nuances of the meaning and experience of eternal life according to the Johannine perspective, were defined, as they became apparent from such exegesis in each particular instance. This procedure was followed by a proper synthesis of the said definitions in order to gain a representative overall picture of the principal descriptions of the two relevant aspects. Eventually the practical applications and consequences for the praxis of the Christian church and the individual believer in our contemporary society flowing from the above-mentioned findings, were spelt out in a final chapter. The enriching results flowing from the implementation of the above-mentioned methods/procedure include the profound insights gained with regard to the depth and richness of the meaning of eternal life from the perspective of the two relevant aspects thereof, as well as the implications thereof for the proper, Scriptural ways in which the abundance of this life can be experienced by all Christians. Lastly, the challenging ways in which the contemporary church and the individual Christian can demonstrate this life in our modern society for the advancement of God's spiritual kingdom on earth, also became apparent. Amongst the most important characteristics of eternal life, as well as the appropriate consequences of its actualisation in and through God's children which came to the fore, are the following. Eternal life is a spiritual category/dimension of life. It is God's own, unique life. This life will be experienced fully when Christ returns.
