▼ This thesis by publication is a study of the equivariant index theory of Dirac operators and Callias-type operators in two distinct settings, namely on cocompact and non-cocompact manifolds with a Lie group action. The first two chapters are a short resumé of Dirac operators and index theory and form a common introduction to the papers in the appendices. Appendix A is joint work with my supervisors, Elder Professor Mathai Varghese and Dr. Hang Wang. For G an almost-connected Lie group acting properly and cocompactly on a manifold M, we study G-index theory of G- invariant Dirac operators. By establishing Poincaré duality for equivariant K-theory and K-homology, we are able to extend the scope of our results to include all elements of equivariant analytic K-homology, which we also show is isomorphic to equivariant geometric K-homology. Our results are applied to prove: a rigidity result for almost-complex manifolds, generalising a vanishing theorem of Hattori; an analogue of Petrie's conjecture; and Lichnerowicz-type obstructions to G-invariant Riemannian metrics on M. Appendix B studies the much more general situation when the quotient M=G is non-compact and G is an arbitrary Lie group. I define G-Callias- type operators and show that they are C*(G)-Fredholm by adapting analysis of Kasparov to new Hilbert C*(G)-module analogues of Sobolev spaces. Questions of adjointability, regularity and essential self-adjointness are addressed in detail. The estimates on G-Callias-type operators are based on the work of Bunke [8] in the non-equivariant context. We construct explicit admissible endomorphisms for G-Callias-type operators from the K-theory of the Higson G-corona of M, a highly non-trivial group. The index theory developed here is applied to prove a general obstruction theorem for G- invariant metrics of positive scalar curvature in the non-cocompact setting. ▼ In this dissertation, we present a test of the Stole-Zwiebel hypothesis that individual employees have bargaining power in negotiating compensation and that firms respond by overemploying labor and by adopting inefficient technologies. Because the hypothesis generates a production function that includes the market wage, rendering problematic the use of standard duality-based estimation procedures to test their predictions of allocative and technical inefficiencies, we develop and implement a two-step procedure to test their predictions: the first step determines whether there are allocative inefficiencies in the use of input factors, and the second determines whether any extant allocative inefficiency follows the pattern implied by the Stole-Zwiebel hypothesis. Secondly, this dissertation proposes a way of estimating a profit system with technical and allocative inefficiencies in order to identify the source of profit inefficiency. To overcome the drawback that the existence of unobserved technical inefficiency interactive in a nonlinear form has hindered panel data estimation of the system, homogeneity in technology is introduced to separate technical inefficiency from the profit frontier. Because introducing homogeneity in technologies with multiple outputs necessitates choosing a numeraire output and a different numeraire yields different result, a rule of thumb based on careful investigation of the data is inevitable. Thirdly, this dissertation addresses two questions regarding the relation between allocative inefficiency, substitutability between inputs, and the choice of a quantity index. The first question is how the degree of substitutability between input factors affects the extent of allocative inefficiency and the second question is how well the degree of allocative inefficiency is captured by the Fisher and Tornqvist indices. We showed that allocative inefficiency increases with input substitutability between input factors and that both the Fisher and the Tornqvist indices increase with allocative inefficiency. However, we conclude that the Fisher index captures increased allocative inefficiency more accurately than does the Tornqvist index.

▼ New methods of biological analyte sensing are needed for development of miniature biosensors that are highly sensitive and require minimal sample preparation. One novel technique employs optical resonances known as Whispering Gallery Modes (WGMs). These modes arise from total internal reflection of light at the internal surface of a high index microsphere within a low index medium and produce an evanescent field that extends into the surrounding medium. The WGMs produce multiple narrow spectral peaks that shift position with variations in the local index of refraction sampled by the evanescent tail of the WGMs. To excite these WGMs, we embed quantum dots (QDs) in the periphery of polystyrene microspheres to serve as local light sources. By coupling emission from the QDs to the WGMs, the sensors can be excited and interrogated remotely and, by monitoring the shift of multiple resonance modes, may provide higher sensitivity and accuracy compared with similar techniques. The high refractometric sensitivity of the WGMs offers potential for trace detection of molecules adsorbed onto or bound to the microsphere sensor elements. The sensitivity of these sensors is demonstrated by monitoring the wavelength shift of multiple resonant modes as bulk index of refraction is changed. The potential for targeted biosensing is explored through addition of a protein that adsorbs to the microsphere surface, thrombin. Microsensor response in all cases demonstrated increased sensitivity over theoretical predictions. Models based on Mie theory and continuity of the radial functions across the sphere-media interface were used to model the location, Q-factor, and sensitivity of the WGMs in microspheres by considering the embedded QDs as a high index outer layer. This model was used, along with estimates of the QD-layer index and penetration depth, to relate the locations and sensitivities of the modes to our experimental results with strong agreement between the two. In all, these microspheres demonstrate feasibility for use as remote microsensors with sensitivities rivaling current techniques. Advisors/Committee Members: Meissner, Kenith E. In index coding, a sender broadcasts messages through a noiseless broadcast channel to multiple receivers, each possessing a subset of the messages a priori, known as side-information. The sender knows the side-information available at each receiver, and uses that information to broadcasts coded messages, called an index code, such that all receivers can decode their requested messages using their side-information and the received index code. The aim is to find an index code with the minimum information bits per received message bits, called the optimal broadcast rate. The index-coding problem is applicable in many real-world contexts such as content-distribution networks (e.g., a network providing video-on-demand services), satellite communications, and distributed storage (e.g., data centers). In this dissertation, we investigate unicast-index-coding (UIC) problems, where each message is requested by only one receiver, each receiver requests only one message and each receiver has a subset of messages except its requested messages in side-information. These problems can be modeled by directed graphs. We apply graph-based approaches to the two types of the UIC problems based on the number of senders, namely single-sender unicast-index-coding (SSUIC) and two-sender unicast-index-coding (TSUIC) problems. In SSUIC, we propose a new scheme, called interlinked-cycle-cover (ICC) scheme, that exploits interlinked-cycle (IC) structures (a form of overlapping cycles that generalizes cliques and cycles) in directed graphs. This scheme provides an upper bound on the optimal broadcast rate for any SSUIC instance, and construct a linear index code. We prove that the ICC scheme is optimal over all linear and non-linear index codes for a class of infinitely many digraphs. We show that the ICC scheme can outperform existing schemes for some SSUIC instances with six receivers. Further, we extend the IC structures and the scheme. We find that the ICC scheme (including the extended scheme) provides the optimal broadcast rates for all message alphabet sizes for all SSUIC instances up to five receivers except eight problems. In TSUIC, firstly, we extend the existing SSUIC graph-based schemes, namely clique-cover, cycle-cover, and local-chromatic-number schemes to TSUIC. Then we investigate the TSUIC problems by its structural characterization. By considering three sub-problems of a TSUIC problem based on whether the receivers' requests are available at only one sender or both senders, we formulate its optimal broadcast rate as a function of the optimal broadcast rates of its three sub-problems. Furthermore, for this formulation, we extend the notion of confusion graphs and graph coloring to TSUIC. We characterize a class of infinitely many TSUIC instances where a certain type of side-information can be removed without affecting their optimal broadcast rates.

▼ Exploiting and learning graph structures is becoming ubiquitous in Network Information Theory and Machine Learning. The former deals with efficient communication schemes in a many-node network. In the latter, inferring graph structured relationships from high dimensional data is important. In this dissertation, some graph theoretic results in these two areas are presented. The first part deals with the problem of optimizing bandwidth resources for a shared broadcast link serving many users each having access to cached content. This problem and its variations are broadly called Index Coding. Index Coding is fundamental to understanding multi-terminal network problems and has applications in networks that deploy caches. The second part deals with the resources required for learning a network structure that encodes distributional and causal relationships among many variables in machine learning. The number of samples needed to learn graphical models that capture crucial distributional information is studied. For learning causal relationships, when passive data acquisition is not sufficient, the number of interventions required is investigated. In the first part, efficient algorithms for placing popular content in a network that deploys a distributed system of caches are provided. Then, the Index Coding problem is considered: every user has its own cache content that is given and transmissions on a shared link are to be optimized. All graph theoretic schemes for Index Coding, known prior to this work, are shown to perform within a constant factor from the one based on graph coloring. Then, `partial' flow-cut gap results for information flow in a multi-terminal network are obtained by leveraging Index Coding ideas. This provides a poly-logarithmic approximation for a known generalization of multi-cut. Finally, optimal cache design in Index Coding for an adversarial demand pattern is considered. Near-optimal algorithms for cache design and delivery within a broad class of schemes are presented. In the second part, sample complexity lower bounds considering average error for learning random Ising Graphical Models, sampled from Erdós-Rényi ensembles, are obtained. Then, the number of bounded interventions required to learn a network of causal relationships under the Pearls model is studied. Upper and lower bounds on the number of size bounded interventions required for various classes of graphs are obtained. Advisors/Committee Members: Dimakis, Alexandros G. ▼ Research of metamaterials focuses on unprecedented optical properties that may be obtained from composite media, and has attracted great attention since the seminal paper “Negative Refraction Makes a Perfect Lens”. The theory underpinning this field treats electromagnetic composites using homogenization and effective medium theory (EMT). This thesis discusses negative index metamaterials (NIMs) that exhibit negative refraction. The results can be summarized as follows: 1. The refractive index and maximum unit cell size of an arbitrary NIM can be determined from its photonic band structure in the zero-loss limit. 2. A unified, quantitative explanation can be given to negative refraction observed in both lossy NIMs and lossless photonic crystals. 3. A near-infrared subwavelength NIM is demonstrated. 4. There is no theoretical basis for constructing a superlens. We first derive a general relationship between the bulk index of an arbitrary NIM and its photonic band structure and a maximum unit cell size in the zero-loss limit. Based on discrete translational symmetry, we generalize Bloch’s theorem to a phase matching condition with a complex transverse wavevector, which provides a unified explanation of negative refraction observed in lossless photonic crystals and lossy NIMs. A near-infrared NIM using paired metallic strips is also designed and fabricated using electron beam lithography. It operates at a wavelength of 1μm, and has a ratio of wavelength to periodicity of 7, to our knowledge the highest yet achieved among experimental optical NIMs. The NIM is characterized by scanning electron and atomic force microscopies. Optical transmission and interferometric measurements are also consistent with a bulk negative index derived from band structure. Finally, a model NIM is designed based on Mie resonances, resulting in an effective medium with ε=µ=-1 after homogenization. EMT predicts that such a material is capable of perfect lensing, but is found to substantially overestimate the range of recoverable evanescent waves due to neglect of the microstructure. This result explains the fact that the perfect lens has not been demonstrated after a decade of experimental effort. This dissertation emphasizes the physical behavior of composites, as well as the importance of microscopic models and experiment in metamaterials research. This thesis in the area of environmental economics examines medical waste. The goal is to assess the current practices employed by healthcare institutions regarding categorisation, handling, data collection, data analysis, and to evaluate the recent trends in waste’s price and quantity movements. This goal is to be accomplished using the index number theory. I have analysed the data for two hospitals in Finland: Kuopio University Hospital for the years 2003 through 2006 and Oulu University Hospital for the period of 2004 to 2005. I have discovered major flaws in the current categorisation and handling practices. Waste is divided into very uneven categories, with only part of the waste types being recognised. The current method of categorisation is mainly based on the classification of waste used by the waste managing companies. I propose to make it common practice to identify all the waste types and record simultaneously each waste type’s quantity and service price charged for that quantity. I also propose determining all the main factors used in handling each waste type at the healthcare institution to establish the total price for that type and give examples of how to accomplish this. The index number theory and its main concepts are introduced. I criticise the practices of healthcare institutions of adding the quantities of different wastes together to report total amount as wrong. Regardless of units of measurement various wastes constitute different values. I propose the use of index numbers instead. I argue that relative changes and index numbers should be measured in natural logarithms and results presented in log-percentages. The index numbers are shown to be ideal tools for examining medical waste. The changes in the total value of waste are decomposed into changes due to variations of prices and changes due to variations of quantities. These are calculated using five different index number formulas. I demonstrate a great degree of consistency between these index numbers and show that the calculated values are within one log-per cent for all index numbers, and within half a log-per cent for precision index numbers. The index number formulas used in the analysis are Laspeyres, Paasche, Fisher, Edgeworth and Montgomery-Vartia indices. The chief references used in this thesis are “The Making of Index Numbers” by Irving Fisher (1927), “From Binary Index Comparisons to Index Series” by Yrjö Vartia (1995) and “Relative Changes and Index Numbers” by Yrjö Vartia (1976) as well.

▼ The pseudo-spectral time domain (PSTD) and discrete dipole approximation (DDA) are two of the most popular methods to model the single-scattering properties of ice crystals and aerosols. Both methods solve for Maxwell’s equations. The PSTD method uses a Fourier pseudo-spectral method and a finite-difference method to compute the spatial and temporal derivatives of electromagnetic fields. The DDA method uses an electromagnetic integral equation in the frequency domain to calculate the single-scattering properties. We used a spherical model for this study because the analytical solution was given by the Lorenz-Mie theory. Previous studies have found that at refractive indices between 1.2 and 1.5, PSTD computed the single-scattering properties of spherical particles faster for large size parameters, while DDA was more computationally efficient at small size parameters; however, these previous studies did not consider absorptive cases. The purpose of this study was to expand the range of refractive indices to include absorptive cases and to determine which method was more efficient for computing the single-scattering properties of atmospheric particles within set criteria. The PSTD and DDA methods were systematically assessed in this study for 31 different realistic complex refractive indices. Similar to the previous studies, it was found that PSTD was more efficient than DDA for particles with large size parameters. The results in this study were consistent with the previous studies for non-absorptive to moderately absorptive particles. However, for strongly absorptive cases, DDA was more efficient than PSTD at all size parameters for the absorptive particles. It was also determined that the efficiencies of the two methods were dependent on both the real and imaginary parts of the complex refractive index. The significance of this study was to improve our understanding of the capabilities of the PSTD and DDA methods for computing single-scattering properties. ▼ Dans cette thèse, nous avons étudié le problème de cache codée en construisant la connexion entre le problème de cache codée avec placement non-codé et codage d'index, et en tirant parti des résultats de codage d'index pour caractériser les limites fondamentales du problème de cache codée. Nous avons principalement analysé le problème de cache codée dans le modèle de diffusion à liaison partagée et dans les réseaux combinés. Dans la première partie de cette thèse, pour les réseaux de diffusion de liens partagés, nous avons considéré la contrainte que le contenu placé dans les caches est non-codé. Lorsque le contenu du cache est non-codé et que les demandes de l'utilisateur sont révélées, le problème de cache peut être lié à un problème de codage d'index. Nous avons dérivé des limites fondamentales pour le problème de cache en utilisant des outils pour le problème de codage d'index. Nous avons dérivé un nouveau schéma réalisable de codage d'index en base d'un codage de source distribué. Cette borne interne est strictement meilleure que la borne interne du codage composite largement utilisée. Pour le problème de cache centralisée, une borne externe sous la contrainte de placement de cache non-codé est proposée en base de une borne externe “acyclic” de codage d’index. Il est prouvé que cette borne externe est atteinte par le schéma cMAN lorsque le nombre de fichiers n'est pas inférieur au nombre d'utilisateurs, et par le nouveau schéma proposé pour le codage d’index, sinon. Pour le problème de cache décentralisée, cette thèse propose une borne externe sous la contrainte que chaque utilisateur stocke des bits uniformément et indépendamment au hasard. Cette borne externe est atteinte par le schéma dMAN lorsque le nombre de fichiers n'est pas inférieur au nombre d'utilisateurs, et par notre codage d'index proposé autrement. Dans la deuxième partie de cette thèse, nous avons considéré le problème de cache dans les réseaux de relais, où le serveur communique avec les utilisateurs aidés par le cache via certains relais intermédiaires. En raison de la dureté de l'analyse sur les réseaux généraux, nous avons principalement considéré un réseau de relais symétrique bien connu, `réseaux de combinaison’, y compris H relais et binom {H} {r} utilisateurs où chaque utilisateur est connecté à un r-sous-ensemble de relais différent. Nous avons cherché à minimiser la charge de liaison maximale pour les cas les plus défavorables. Nous avons dérivé des bornes externes et internes dans cette thèse. Pour la borne externes, la méthode directe est que chaque fois que nous considérons une coupure de x relais et que la charge totale transmise à ces x relais peut être limitée à l'extérieur par la borne externes du modèle de lien partagé, y compris binom {x} {r} utilisateurs. Nous avons utilisé cette stratégie pour étendre les bornes externes du modèle de lien partagé et la borne externe “acyclic” aux réseaux de combinaison. ▼ The notion of market efficiency posits that stock prices fully reflect all available information in a timely manner. The efficient market hypothesis (EMH) proposed by Fama (1970) systematically rules out the profitability of information driven investing, and implicitly promulgates a passive market capitalisation weighted investment strategy such as indexing. The appeal of passive strategies has largely been driven by the growth of passive tracking instruments, which allow investors to earn underlying index performance by purchasing a single security such as an exchange traded fund (ETF). On the contrary, proponents of behavioural finance suggest that investors are irrational and subject to psychological biases. Furthermore, the noisy market hypothesis of Siegel (2006) asserts that the deviations from the economic ideal of rationality proposed by the EMH, introduces noise in the market which could lead prices to deviate from their intrinsic values. The resultant drag in performance of market capitalisation weighted indices suggests that the optimal cap-weighted market portfolio promulgated by the modern portfolio theory (MPT) of Markowitz (1952), ceases to be the most mean-variance approach to asset allocation. With the goal of testing the applications of ETF’s, this study first evaluates the performance of passive sector ETF’s in the global equity market. In addition, motivated by the potential inefficiencies of capweighted portfolios, the study tests optimisation based asset allocation techniques, and technical analysis based market timing strategies. The study employs the S&P Global 1200 sector indices and their respective sector ETF’s to test their performances and applications in passive and active investment strategies, over the period from July 5th, 2002 to February 6th, 2015. The ETF’s are evaluated based on their tracking ability and price efficiency. All 10 sector ETF’s possess insignificant tracking errors and successfully replicate the performance of their underlying indices. In addition, the globalsector ETF’s are not price efficient over the study period, as they possess persistent price deviations from their net asset values (NAV’s). Furthermore, the ETF trading strategy based on the relationship between ETF returns and price deviations, proves to be effective in outperforming the passive buy and hold strategy in the majority of the sectors. The sector decomposition of the cap-weighted S&P Global 1200 index which is employed as the market proxy, reveals that its sector allocation remains fairly stable throughout the study period. In contrast, the optimal historical sector composition incurs large changes in sector exposure from year to year and provides substantially superior performance relative to the cap-weighted market portfolio. The cap-weighted portfolio tends to overweight cyclical sectors and underweight resilient sectors during major economic downturns.
