▼ This thesis explores which factors are preventing web professionals from creating
accessible website navigation. To answer this, interviews with six web designers
and developers were conducted, the results of which (in accordance with previous
research) indicate two primary factors: 1. Client demand is low, leading to
deprioritization and a lack of time and/or money for considering accessibility; 2.
Accessibility does not have a natural place in the design/development process. In
addition, an analysis of the navigational accessibility of an existing web archive of
the Swedish painter Ivar Arosenius was performed, identifying three main issues:
1. Lack of context, causing disorientation; 2. Keyboard operation not being optimally
implemented; and 3. Search functionality issues, such as being inconsistent
in displayed results and not providing correction suggestions for misspelled search
terms. Finally, as a way to address the factors preventing accessibility, four concrete
concepts were developed. Of these, two were further advanced: an accessibility business
value calculator, to aid clients in recognizing the business value of accessibility;
and an accessibility design linter, to make it easier for web designers to identify
accessibility problems in their designs at an early stage.

▼ Urban Education
Using universal design instruction (UDI) as a framework, this study explores the inclusive teaching practices of four award-winning humanities and social sciences faculty at a large urban Research I university located in the northeastern region of the United States. UDI, a framework used to assist teachers in creating proactively inclusive instructional design, was used as a measure of inclusivity. Using a qualitative case-study approach, the study cross-examined the pedagogy of these faculty and unpacked specific techniques and practices embedded in their pedagogy that aligned with UDI. With each faculty member considered an individual case, structured classroom observations and interviews with target faculty, their colleagues, and student focus groups were conducted. Guided by the UDI framework, a cross-case analysis was then undertaken to determine the extent to which each faculty member met UDI principles. The study yielded descriptive accounts of multidimensional teaching strategies that incorporated universal design instruction.

▼ In order to support Social Innovation, Social Designers advocate for the use of collaborative
design methodologies,
inclusive design processes, which produce innovative
design outcomes and
inclusive societies. While there is a large amount of literature on this topic from a European and US perspective, there is little understanding regarding the effect large social disparity between stakeholders has on these types of engagements. The researcher describes this as cross-boundary collaborative
design for social innovation, where "boundary" refers to social and collective identity such as, gender, race, class, etc., which is a reality in most South African collaborative
design engagements and a gap in the literature. Thus, this thesis explores this gap by asking the research question, what practices, mindsets and interpersonal interactions help to support effective cross-boundary collaborative
design for Social Innovation? In order to answer this question, the researcher conducted 32 interviews followed by a single focus group with disparate stakeholders engaged in these types of initiatives. Using a Constructivist Grounded Theory approach and applying the lens of Appreciative Inquiry to her interview questions, she recorded narratives that focused on moments of effectiveness within these cross-boundary collaborative
design engagements. What emerged from the data was a strong link between the quality of relationships between the disparate stakeholders and the effectiveness of the collaborative
design process - what she described as "generative" relationships (connections built on trust, vulnerability, friendship and respect) that blurred the social boundaries between the participants and helped them move across the social divides with ease. This in turn increased the generative nature of the collaborative
design process. Furthermore, these generative relationships were often established outside of the
design process, in a preliminary phase (pre-project) before a
design engagement began because this phase allowed the stakeholders to focus solely on building relationships, instead of generating
design solutions. However, the importance of generative relationships does not feature strongly in the current collaborative
design literature. Instead, it focuses mainly on developing communication methods as a way to support boundary crossing and views relationship building as a secondary by-product of a good communication method. This thesis, however, concludes that in order to support effective cross-boundary collaborative
design engagements, this process should be flipped and attention be given to first building generative relationships that can then help to support the effectiveness of the cross-boundary communication methods and ultimately improve the over all crossboundary collaborative
design process.

▼ Socially Responsible Architecture is the way in which an architect practices architecture, but more so the way in which they relate and integrate their clients. This thesis explores the nature of a socially responsible architecture through a series of social interactions with the people of Ngāti Tāwhaki ki Ngāpūtahi. Aiming to understand what are the most appropriate
design decisions for their architecture and their hapū's future.
This thesis is chronologically taught by real people (the clients of the project) and the lessons learnt through my social interaction with these clients are attributed to the main contention of this thesis, Social Architecture. The
design decision-making process for a newly proposed marae at Ngāpūtahi, in Te Urewera, is the means to which I understand how this process differs from mainstream or conventional architectural practice. The means to which I understand what the most appropriate way of practicing this architecture is through an understanding of Kaupapa Māori theory but more so understanding my clients through the relationships that I have formed with them.
Within this thesis the nature of these relationships and the way in which they originated are explored. It is an exploration into not only the nature of this architectural project but also an exploration into how my contentions about the nature of this socially responsible architecture developed. Thus a personal insight into how my learning developed throughout the process.

▼ Typically, across Canada, curriculum and special education are separate and distinct branches within provincial departments of education. The development of two branches within one provincial department has created a challenge for classroom teachers expected to integrate provincial curricular and special education mandates. Some teachers have reported they grapple with “curriculum overload” (National Council for Curriculum and Assessment, 2010) while others feel “ill-equipped” to sustain an
inclusive pedagogical practice (Black-Hawkins, 2010; Florian, 2008).
The purpose of this qualitative collaborative action research study was to co-develop, with teachers, a new
Inclusive Pedagogical Planner (IPP). A new IPP intended to support and guide teachers as they integrate provincial mandates regarding curriculum and special education. The central research questions for the study were (1) Can a new IPP, that is useful, practical, and supports and guides an
inclusive planning process, be co-developed with classroom teachers, and (2) Can curriculum and inclusion be integrated into a new IPP that facilitates the development or advancement of an
inclusive pedagogical practice?
Recruited for the study as active collaborators were four middle-years teachers. The active collaborators engaged in every aspect of the study as they contributed to the
design, implementation, and critical analysis of the new IPP. The findings initially revealed that this group of teachers grappled with curriculum overload and some felt ill-equipped as they developed or tried to sustain an
inclusive pedagogical practice. However, as a result of being a collaborative member of this study and participating in the co-development of the new IPP they identified a positive change in their
inclusive pedagogical practice. They also indicated that they benefited from having an opportunity to dialogue with their colleagues and reflect on their own theories and ideas about inclusion and their pedagogical practices regarding the curriculum.
Opportunities for further development of the IPP and future research include (a) using new IPP as a teaching tool with undergraduate students, (b) implementation of the IPP with a larger number of participants spanning a broader range of grade-levels and years of teaching experience, and (c) the supporting binder could be enhanced with the addition of new resources.

▼ Thailand has been extremely successful in promoting itself as a cultural country, with tourism being the country's primary source of income. However, cultural tourism for Thai people is considered to be a niche market, and little attention has been paid to the topic, compared to mass tourism. Moreover, Thai visitors have little motivation to visit actual historical sites and read the story displayed as part of exhibitions. This research aims to create, detail and evaluate a framework for inclusive digital storytelling to increase diversity and motivation for cultural tourism in Thailand. To broaden and increase the potential tourism market, this PhD research applies inclusive design principles as 'understanding and designing for diversity' by identifying potential Thai customers into five diverse groups (youth, older adults, disabled people, non-cultural tourists, and cultural tourists), and presents reports regarding the barriers and drivers for achieving this. To increase the motivation of Thai tourists, this PhD research adopts digital storytelling as 'the guideline for creating storytelling' to increase motivation among the five diverse groups, and illustrates how this was done in the second study. However, an issue arises if Thai people (particularly older adults and disabled people) cannot access or understand how to use this type of digital technology. These problems can in turn create opportunities for applying inclusive designs to digital technology in an effort to understand users' behavioural needs; this is presented in the third study. Finally, the fourth study evaluates the framework detailed from the previous three studies in order to answer the primary research question: "How could inclusive design and digital storytelling principles be applied to facilitate cultural tourism in Thailand?" This PhD research can suggest and establish links between three key areas and devise and detail a new framework to increase diversity and motivation for cultural tourism for Thai visitors in Thailand which is original and interdisciplinary.

▼ Inclusive design is a concept intended to promote the development of products and environments equally usable by all users, irrespective of their age or ability. This research focuses on developing a method to derive heuristics for
inclusive design. The research applies the actionfunction diagram to model the interaction between a user and a product,
design difference classification to compare a typical product with its
inclusive counterpart, graph theory to mathematically represent the comparison relations, and graph data mining to extract the
design heuristics. The goal of this research is to formalize and automate the
inclusive-
design heuristics generation process.
The rule generation allows statistical mining of the
design guidelines from existing
inclusive products. Formalization results show that, the rate of rule generation decreases as more products are added to the dataset. The automated method is particularly helpful in the developmental stages of graph mining applications for product
design. The graph mining technique has capability for graph grammar induction, which is extended here to automate the generation of engineering grammars. In general, graph mining can be applied to extract
design heuristics from any discrete and relational
design data that can be represented as graphs.
Concept generation studies are conducted to validate the heuristics derived in this research for
inclusive product
design. In addition, an inclusivity rating is created and verified to evaluate the inclusiveness of the conceptual ideas. Finally, appreciation and awareness about
inclusive design is important in an engineering
design course, hence, a module is compiled to teach
inclusive design methods in a capstone
design course.
The results of the exploratory study and validation show that there is problem dependency in the application of the representation scheme. It cannot be stated with certainty at this point if the representation scheme is helpful for designing consumer products, where only the activities related to the upper body are involved. However, self-reported feedback indicates that the teaching module is effective in increasing the awareness and confidence about
inclusive design.

a design technique used to minimize the capability requirements of
products without hindering functionality. It revolves around
creating products that everyone can use, regardless of any
disabilities. Designers frequently focus on creating a design for a
specific target market that does not include users with
disabilities; however, recent studies have shown that creating
designs for both people with and without disabilities is beneficial
for ethical and financial reasons, and often results in an improved
design for all. Therefore, human capability data can be used to
create universal designs appropriate for the vast ranges of
capabilities that exist in people with and without disabilities.
The proposed methodology specifies how capability data can be used
to determine requirements for typical, accessible, and universal
design types, which are distinguished by the capabilities of the
populations for which they are each designed. A grip strength
example is presented that demonstrates how these capability
requirements are calculated. Furthermore, several defining aspects
of universal design are identified, and a modification to the Seven
Principles of Universal Design is proposed to include these
defining aspects. The primary contributions of this research are:
(1) specific methods for calculating the capability levels
necessary for typical, accessible, and universal designs; (2) an
evaluation of the differences between universal designs and
accessible designs; and (3) a modification to the Seven Principles
of Universal Design that will help to prevent designers from
mistakenly creating accessible designs while intending to create
universal designs.

▼ As cultural diversity continues to increase in U.S. urban centers, and indeed throughout the country, it becomes increasingly important to promote interaction between people of different backgrounds. Many forms of interaction, from simply seeing, to intimate conversation can increase our familiarity and acceptance of cultural differences. In addition, a greater understanding of these differences can lead to communities with a strong sense of togetherness and a vibrancy of local place. As a means of achieving this outcome, this thesis identifies ways in which urban park spaces can promote social interaction between different cultural groups and how these methods can then be used to develop a community
gathering place that is welcoming to all. This thesis has developed a unique Social Space Organizational Model based on literature review findings relative to multi-cultural urban park and social space development. The model serves as a foundational framework for the creation of a collection of social spaces that function to accommodate the diverse ways in which different cultural groups use urban park spaces, as well as to provide opportunities for shared experiences that encourage community gathering and interaction between groups.
Additionally, the model suggests an interconnectivity of various park spaces that promote a unified social experience throughout the park. Case studies of urban parks designed for use as social gathering places were analyzed against the model. Literature review findings on character qualities associated with social spaces as valued by multiple cultural groups were also explored in the case studies to identify
design elements that encourage social interaction and foster positive experiences. Ultimately, these findings led to the creation of a neighborhood social gathering place that is welcoming to many different cultural groups and encouraging of community gathering and togetherness. The
design engages multiple community groups by creating a park that is accomodative to a range of needs and uses as valued by different groups. Additionally, the
design incorporates a diverse range of social opportunities and experiences that maintain flexibility in their ability to provide for individual as well as community based social experiences.

▼ The largest age group in western society, the baby boomers, was born between 1943 and 1964, considering different definitions for the time span. All these people have an age between 62 and 48 years old. The life expectancy of these people is the highest in history and they will be more and more willing to stay independent as long as possible. The core of independence is being able to provide and take care of oneself. In order to do that, the instruments that surround the person have to be adjusted to the needs of the person and aid as much as possible. This is the report of a Bachelor Degree Project that has the intention to develop a kitchen accessible for all people, both people with full ability and people with limited capabilities, using the inclusive design toolkit. At the same time it has to be appealing enough that people without limited capabilities also enjoy the use of this kitchen, this will be pursued by applying the pleasure design methodology. Apart from the objective to come up with a kitchen concept, attention will be given to study, compare and discuss the relation and compatibility between different methods and design philosophies. The project resulted in a conceptual kitchen aimed to be suitable for nearly all people. The design was approached through various angles to obtain a broad variety of solutions, which was combined into one kitchen concept, to comply with the demands that a future user may have. The main aspects taken upon are the layout, storage solutions that require minimum effort and a stove and sink solution. The kitchen concept complies with the predetermined requirements set forth in the project specifications. Extra attention was put into the storage methods. Not necessarily in the amount, although most space was taken advantage of, but in the ways the user can use the storage spaces. The stove and sink are located on a height-adjustable platform for maximum comfort and adaptation to the user. The layout was determined according to the space needed for mobility, storage and function.

▼ This master thesis concerns the user-centered
design of a shower system for the Korean market. Starting from a Universal
Design perspective, the aim was to take into account the needs and preferences of a broad user variety. User research showed that common Korean bathing habits were not supported by standard bathrooms. A showersystem was designed that takes into account both standing and seated users, thereby making a small step towards a truly Korean bathroom.

▼ One of the more pressing long-term concerns for parents of children with a neurodevelopmental disorder (NDD), such as autism, is financial management (Abbott & Marriott, 2012). Few of these people ever manage to attain a level of financial literacy that allows them to become fully independent. Value, in it’s current form, is just too abstract for many (Cheak-Zamora, et al. 2017). This problem is augmented by our financial institutions, who have neglected to offer these groups any form of accessible financial products, rendering any aspirations of becoming “financially independent” by these groups, as unattainable. This is detrimental to their well-being and sense of self. (Abbott & Marriott, 2012). With this in light, this thesis will firstly highlight the obstacles faced by these groups in achieving financial independence, secondly, it will present a new paradigm through which to look at value. A paradigm that understands that money isn’t about a number, but rather the complex social interactions that that govern our liberties as members of society. Finally, this thesis will present an example of a new breed of fiancial system, Olive. Making use of emerging distributed technologies, Olive presents a system that enables us to produce products that recognises the spectrum of needs and abilities our community contains.

▼ This thesis investigates the design of inclusive services by integrating theory and approaches from the domains of Service Design and Inclusive Design. This integration was used to evaluate bus service use by younger and older people and the role of other stakeholders. The research was carried out through the case study of the bus service in Guadalajara, Mexico. As a result of this research, an inclusive service design approach and a tool are proposed to guide the design of inclusive services. Using an inclusive service design approach led to the application of a mixed methodology for data collection, which included: 1) a series of individual and group interviews with stakeholders as well as a document analysis; 2) structured focus groups with younger and older people; 3) observation of younger and older passengers using the service; and 4) accompanied journeys with older people. Data were analysed using both qualitative and quantitative techniques, and the results facilitated 1) the understanding of the service operation; 2) the identification of the main barriers for interaction with the service along a door-to-door journey; and 3) the determination of the gap between what younger and older users need and desire and what bus operators actually provide. The research then focussed on visualising and communicating the findings to stakeholders. An inclusive service blueprint was developed to graphically represent the level of difficulty in using the service by younger and older people across the door-to-door journey, and to highlight areas for service improvements. A final study was undertaken to assess the usefulness of the inclusive service approach and the blueprint in improving the bus service. Collectively, the findings indicate that integrating inclusive principles along with a Service Design approach provided several benefits in investigating and improving the bus service. The uniqueness of data generated by younger and older users and the understanding of inclusive principles by the stakeholders already shows the potential to lead to a more inclusive service given the activities now happening in Guadalajara. This research contributes to the discussion of how the design of services can evolve through the incorporation of inclusive principles in the design process. Whilst the research was undertaken in the context of the bus service in Guadalajara, the approach and some outcomes from this research may be applicable for designing inclusive services in other contexts around the world.

▼ Several
design methodologies have been developed that seek to address the diverse needs of disabled users. This work reviews three such methodologies: universal
design,
design for all, and
inclusive design. The core ideas to these methodologies are researched and explained. This work then describes a multitude of state of the art
design techniques that utilize these
design methodologies, and analyzes two such techniques that are readily applicable in the abstracted, functionally focused
design methods that engineers commonly use.
Previous research in
inclusive and universal
design has led to several sets of
inclusive design rules and guidelines. These guidelines suggest modifications to products, environments, and services that could lead to more
inclusive redesigns. It would be very beneficial to apply these
design guidelines in the initial concept generation process to develop
inclusive products; as current accessible
design methods rely on expensive specialized modifications to typical products. Preliminary research into these
inclusive design rules, and their underlying
design representation scheme, has shown that these rules and methods are useful in designing
inclusive architectural products. Here, architectural products are defined as products and environments for which the space around the product is important for
inclusive design. This work seeks to supplement previous research, and analyze the effectiveness of these
design rules when applied to consumer products (i.e. products for which product usability is very important to
inclusive design).
This work analyzes sets of
inclusive design rules; first by observation, followed by an in-depth case study testing each
design rule on a product that was originally designed for users without disabilities. These case studies analyze how
inclusive design rules affect products, and what modifications these
inclusive design rules lead to. We then study potential users? and experienced designers? opinions regarding the inclusivity of these products in order to gain insight on the effectiveness of the related
design rule. The
design rules are further analyzed in a second validation study. This validation study tasks participants with redesigning typical products using the given
design rules. We analyze how the participants apply the
design rules, and what effects they have on product inclusivity.

ABSTRACT - The present thesis attend to a theoretical and practical investigation on the Product Design field with the main aim of formulate a concept of a product for autistic children, looking for indicators of stimulation and promotion of skills and learning, focusing the necessity that these children feel to process the cognitive information in a very selective way. Thereby, themes as Product Design, Inclusive Design and Autism have been converged to better understand how Product Design may contribute for the development of autistic children. Zooming in Autism, a research was made on the subject in order to better understand the syndrome, it’s features and handicaps, as well as the interventions used on autistic children in the name of providing them the most comfortable and independent life possible. Simultaneously, a theoretical approach on Design has been issued, involving both Product and Inclusive Design in order to discover their development, concerns and objectives. As complement, a research and analysis on available products for special-needed people was drawn up, aiming to realize their both substantial and stimulation features. Children with DAS face the world in a particular way, performing a hyper-selective perception of the entourage. Their handicaps carry them away from people; conduct them to create routines of their very own which turns difficult their…

▼ Current product
design methodologies are not conducive to creating
inclusive products (products that meet the needs of persons with and without disabilities). In order to reduce the effort and expense involved in creating
inclusive products, empathic
design principles are applied to discover whether customer needs for people with disabilities can be reliably gathered from people without disabilities using disability simulation. This data collection methodology both increases the safety and ease by which customer needs can be gathered and gives designers an empathic
design experience with the products they develop. A disability simulation suit is validated with respect to both its perceptual and physical effects. As part of larger research, this data will be used to make generalizations about the customer needs for
inclusive products within the context of modular product
design to create
inclusive design guidelines. This paper presents the techniques involved in, and the data regarding the collection of customer needs on known product pairs. These product pairs perform the same function, but one is designed inclusively and one is not. Prior work on the identification of modules from customer need statements is extended to more closely address the
design of
inclusive products.

Exploration of Computer Game Interventions in Improving Gaze Following Behavior in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders.

▼ Statistics show the prevalence of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), a developmental delay disorder, is now 1 in 110 children in the United States (Rice, 2009), nearing 1% of the population. Therefore, this study looked at ways modern technology could assist these children and their families. One deficit in ASD is the inability to respond to gaze referencing (i.e. follow the eye gaze of another adult/child/etc), a correlate of the responding to joint attention (RJA) process. This not only affects the way they appear to society, but it also affects social development, communication skills, and play skills later in life (Whalen & Schreibman, 2003), making early intervention of RJA is an integral part of a successful social skills program.
This study developed
design guidelines, as well as offered and evaluated a
design framework, adding to the limited literature regarding technology and ASD intervention. The game was developed within behavior analytic framework, undergoing several iterations, developing a functional prototype that was analyzed in three parts. The first part identified which elements needed redesign in light of the study population. Second, a collaborative prototyping participatory
design group was formed in which the elements from the previous part of the study were assigned guidelines. The final part of the study included an evaluation by those with ABA experience, evaluating if the game correctly encompassed and mirrored traditional face-to-face ABA interventions. The studyâ s contributions were the finalized
design guidelines and
design framework, as well as additional research on harnessing technology in ASD interventions.

▼ An ageing population is demanding more of healthcare services worldwide, particularly for long-term conditions. In the UK, the challenge of limited healthcare service resources and the influence of the Equality Act on services have increasingly led to the consideration of people's access to community rehabilitation services. These present a potential opportunity for Inclusive Design. The literature suggests that Inclusive Design and its associated tools have been widely applied to the accessibility of buildings and public transport, as well as consumer products and services, but there is little evidence of their application to healthcare services. A review of the literature highlights the importance of improving people's access to community-based rehabilitation by providing care at or closer to home which has become an increasingly prevalent option to meet the healthcare demand for long-term conditions in an ageing population. Therefore, this thesis investigates how Inclusive Design can be applied to healthcare delivery services to improve patients' experiences of accessing these services. It accomplished this through two case studies: community-based rehabilitation services of back pain and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The case studies involved online surveys and interviews with healthcare professionals and patients in understanding the patients' care journeys and challenges in accessing these services. The impact of services demands on patients' capability and their access to services was analysed using an Inclusive Design tool, the Exclusion Calculator. An inclusive approach integrating tools and procedures was summarised to facilitate the understanding of patients' capability-related needs both for the recipients of care and for the providers of care. This research provides a novel contribution by filling the gaps in the literature on the application of Inclusive Design to healthcare delivery services, i.e., community-based rehabilitation. It demonstrates that an Inclusive Design approach can be used to improve people's access to healthcare services and the tools applied can make a useful contribution to understanding service provision and hence service improvement. The Inclusive Design approach focuses on identifying the demands that healthcare services make of their users' capability and in estimating services' exclusion. The process of applying Inclusive Design in this research may be used to improve other healthcare services.

inclusive design with landscape architecture in public space.
Inclusive design concepts provide a prerequisite to creating a framework and Participatory
design offers a method of understanding, accommodating and advocating the needs of people experiencing homeless. The purpose of this thesis is to continue the discourse and synthesize research with emerging landscape and architectural
design approaches and develop
inclusive empowering landscape guidelines, and apply to the site in Athens, GA, to help empower people who are experiencing homelessness. The significance of this research lies in its ability to empower homeless, to provide models for sharing space between diverse users, to address and give voice to larger issues social and environmental justice.

▼ Over 60% of the adult population in the United Kingdom is now overweight or obese or classed as plus size . This is higher than almost all other developed countries in the world. Even with numerous public health interventions, the incidence of being plus size continues to rise potentially changing the demographics of the working population. This presents a challenge to those involved in workplace design as the design process relies upon the utilization of appropriate anthropometric data to establish the percentage of the user population that will be accommodated by the design. The aim of this thesis is to identify issues affecting plus size people in the working environment, not previously explored within the literature. Furthermore, by understanding the size and shape of this population via the collection of key anthropometric data, this will help inform the design of safe, comfortable, inclusive and productive working environments for plus size people within the United Kingdom. A first stage Scoping Study (n=135) found that fit (equipment, tools, furniture, uniforms and personal protective equipment) and space (circulation and shared spaces within the working environment) were issues of concern to plus size people. This suggests that aspects of the current design of the workplace are not suitable, and may even exclude plus size people. A better understanding of the anthropometric requirements of plus size workers is therefore required. Self-reported anthropometric data is an acceptable way of studying large and geographically diverse populations and may assist in accessing the hard to reach plus size working population. A validation study (n=20) established that self measurement of 14 key anthropometric measurements, using a self measurement instruction guide, was a feasible and acceptable data collection method for a larger scale anthropometric study to further understand the body size and shape of plus size people at work. A unique measure of knee splay (for a non-pregnant population) was included. Defined as the distance between the outer borders of the knees whilst seated in the preferred sitting position it represents the observed sitting postures of plus size individuals not captured in existing anthropometric data sources. The larger scale Plus Size Anthropometry Study (n=101) collected anthropometric data of plus size working age people via self measurement. The findings indicated that the study population was substantially larger in circumference, depth and breadth measurements than the population of existing anthropometric data sources. Knee splay was also identified as a key anthropometric variable for plus size people, however, it is not included in any datasets or literature relating to plus size people at work. These factors may contribute to high exclusion rates from current design practices that seek to accommodate the 5th to 95th or 99th percentile of users and may explain the high incidence of fit and space issues reported by participants with a BMI over 35kg/m2 . Finally, semi structured…

▼ Designers are known to use a blend of manual and virtual processes to produce design prototype solutions. For modern designers, computer-aided design (CAD) tools are an essential requirement to begin to develop design concept solutions. CAD, together with augmented reality (AR) systems have altered the face of design practice, as witnessed by the way a designer can now change a 3D concept shape, form, color, pattern, and texture of a product by the click of a button in minutes, rather than the classic approach to labor on a physical model in the studio for hours. However, often CAD can limit a designer's experience of being 'hands-on' with materials and processes. The rise of machine haptic1 (MH) tools have afforded a great potential for designers to feel more 'hands-on' with the virtual modeling processes. Through the use of MH, product designers are able to control, virtually sculpt, and manipulate virtual 3D objects on-screen. Design practitioners are well placed to make use of haptics, to augment 3D concept creation which is traditionally a highly tactile process. For similar reasoning, it could also be said that, non-sighted and visually impaired (NS, VI) communities could also benefit from using MH tools to increase touch-based interactions, thereby creating better access for NS, VI designers. In spite of this the use of MH within the design industry (specifically product design), or for use by the non-sighted community is still in its infancy. Therefore the full benefit of haptics to aid non-sighted designers has not yet been fully realised. This thesis empirically investigates the use of multimodal MH as a step closer to improving the virtual hands-on process, for the benefit of NS, VI and fully sighted (FS) Designer-Makers. This thesis comprises four experiments, embedded within four case studies (CS1-4). Case study 1and2 worked with self-employed NS, VI Art Makers at Henshaws College for the Blind and Visual Impaired. The study examined the effects of haptics on NS, VI users, evaluations of experience. Case study 3 and4, featuring experiments 3 and4, have been designed to examine the effects of haptics on distance learning design students at the Open University. The empirical results from all four case studies showed that NS, VI users were able to navigate and perceive virtual objects via the force from the haptically rendered objects on-screen. Moreover, they were assisted by the whole multimodal MH assistance, which in CS2 appeared to offer better assistance to NS versus FS participants. In CS3 and 4 MH and multimodal assistance afforded equal assistance to NS, VI, and FS, but haptics were not as successful in bettering the time results recorded in manual (M) haptic conditions. However, the collision data between M and MH showed little statistical difference. The thesis showed that multimodal MH systems, specifically used in kinesthetic mode have enabled human (non-disabled and disabled) to credibly judge objects within the virtual realm. It also shows that multimodal augmented tooling can improve the…

▼ Pharmaceutical packaging has an increasing
importance in aging societies, wherepeople depend on medicines for
their own care and well-being. Previous research shows that
pharmaceutical packaging is a source of uncertainties, confusion,
and daily struggles. The challenges experienced by users are
extensive; the pharmaceutical industry needs to respond with
packaging innovation. To address these complex challenges, more
research is necessary on packaging that fulfills user needs and
capabilities. This research purpose is to investigate innovation
and design processes for pharmaceutical packaging, as well as to
stimulate the uptake of inclusive design toward pharmaceutical
packaging that meets society’s needs. The research is
interdisciplinary with a qualitative, explorative approach basedon
three studies and five appended papers. The first study explored
state-of-artpharmaceutical packaging use by older patients.
Physical constraints regardingpackaging design features and the
need to support medication management were identified. Subsequent
studies were based on empirical investigations. The second study
investigated packaging innovation drivers based on a
customer-supplier relationship case study of a brand-owner drug
manufacturer, and a packaging supplier. The third study expanded
those findings, through an interview study with stakeholders (top
management, mid-management, and specialists) with experience in
pharmaceutical packaging innovation and design processes. As argued
and shown in the empirical investigations, pharmaceutical
packaginginnovation is mainly driven by technology and legislation
which reinforce standard and incremental packaging design.
Furthermore, there are multiple stakeholders’ needs to be balanced.
Findings in this research suggest that if packaging design is to be
user-centered and inclusive, stakeholders should be actively
involved to broaden the spectrum of driving forces that lead
packaging innovation and open up new business opportunities. The
empirical studies also revealed different levels and modes of user
involvement in pharmaceutical packaging design.Overall, the
research expands the rather technological focus of packaging
towardthe exploration of industry processes, opening the way for
further studies oninclusive design and social aspects of
pharmaceutical packaging innovation anddesign, being the
collaboration and involvement of users in these processes also of
great interest. Packaging practitioners can benefit from the
results obtained tobenchmark their own processes. Policy makers and
health care providers can reflect about the dilemmas of innovating
pharmaceutical packaging that is inclusive and user-centered, and
can use the empirical evidence from this research to strengthen and
pave the way for new regulations and guidelines. Future agendas may
be leveraged from research to other spheres of society, increasing
dialog about inclusively designed pharmaceutical packaging and
better patient care.

▼ The bathroom environment is critical to older people's ability to age in place over time. While environmental modifications can help overcome barriers to use, they are commonly carried out only when the disability threshold has been reached. This does not take into consideration the period of maladaptive behaviour and potential injury preceding it. The
design of the bathroom environment needs to be re-considered to better support older people throughout the ageing process. This thesis explores bathroom
design for early adoption as a means of supporting thechanging needs and abilities of older people ageing in place. This study employed a convergent mixed-method
design using quantitative and qualitative research carried out on a sample of Australians over 60 years of age. The research methods, developed as part of a larger research project, included a national survey on bathrooms (n=4469), follow up in-depth interviews (n= 80), and a participatory co-
design research component (n= 6). Data from each method were analysed independently for this thesis and the results integrated to explore: (I) changes over time, (2) older people's plans and preparations for the future, and (3) their preferences and
design recommendations for developing better bathrooms. The results of this study showed that with Increased age and disability, older people's functioning ability decreased, necessitating behavioural and environmental change. The findings demonstrated that environmental proactivlty and future planning were occurring. Two stages of environmental change in the bathroom were identified: an early stage of proactive changes addressing future needs and abilities, and a later stage of needs-based assistive modifications. There were clear differences in older people's perceptions of these changes. Changes during the proactive stage were favoured, while assistive modifications were perceived more negatively and not desired. The findings also demonstrated older people's preferences for
Inclusive design by improving mainstream designs to suit the diverse needs of older populations. This study concludes that older people's perception of bathroom environments, fixtures and features are important in determining levels of acceptance and use. To encourage early adoption of better and more supportive bathrooms, assistive elements should be integrated into mainstream designs to create environments of supportive luxury that are desirable to everyone.
