▼ This study examines how some Indian women in South Africa who became managers negotiated their identities in their early lives and in their adult working lives on their journeys to becoming successful managers. Prior studies on identity work and the experience of intersectionality by ethnic minority women have typically focused on professional identities in isolation, separate from early life influences. The current study uses a life story approach to provide a holistic understanding of the journeys of the first significant cohort of Indian women to ascend to management positions in South Africa. I explored the narratives of 13 Indian women managers in senior and top management positions in corporate South Africa using a grounded theory approach to make visible the identity work they have engaged in throughout their lives so far. The life stories of the participants reveal that throughout their lives they have grappled with negotiating a gender identity shaped by Indian cultural assumptions about the roles of men and women in juxtaposition to or in combination with their personal aspirations for professional success. I used a bird cage metaphor to capture how these multiple factors shaped and constrained their lives and careers. The interplay between their racio-ethnic, gender and professional identities is unpacked, and their strategies for reconciling the tensions among their multiple identities are described. In negotiating their identities, these women have developed a particular type of hybrid identity that allows them to move between the compartments into which their professional identity demands and cultural expectations have been divided. The women’s cultural identities remain pivotal in their lives, and they have strong collectivist identities, as they still live within their communities even after the official end of apartheid. My findings enrich and extend the identity literature relating to ethnic minority women by focusing on identity negotiation over time, rather than only on discrete moments in time. My findings also contribute to identity literature in general, as they illustrate that an individual’s identity is formed not only by personal and social identities, but also by the historical and cultural context beyond the organisation within which the person operates. This context is often not considered in identity research in organisations – most studies relating to identity work focus on the tensions between personal identities and professional identities in the workplace. ▼ This thesis argues that Mohsin Hamid’s The Reluctant Fundamentalist and Ayad Akhtar’s Disgraced portray the struggles of South Asian Muslims in light of the model minority myth. The protagonists’ struggles for assimilation as model minorities are thwarted due to the collective social suspicion towards Muslim identities. Both of these works of diaspora post-colonial fiction are among the first prominent responses to post-9/11 American social perceptions of the Muslim diaspora. The Reluctant Fundamentalist, written in the contemporary timeline of 9/11, depicts the circumstances of the protagonist Changez in the pre- and the post-9/11 United States. Changez surrenders his efforts to assimilate as a model minority due to internal and external conflicts, including his own introspection over the social and economic disparities between the East and West, and the racial prejudice that leads to his disenchantment with America. In Disgraced, the protagonist Amir begins as a successful, assimilated model minority, a status he has achieved through a rejection of his own Muslim identity. He has, for example, changed his last name to appear of Hindu heritage to assimilate years ago and has even passed himself along at his Jewish law firm as a Hindu-American. When his Muslim identity is disclosed, his world unravels. Through the efforts of assimilation on the part of their protagonists, Hamid and Akhtar highlight how South Asian Muslims after 9/11 grapple with suspicion, scrutiny and surveillance in the US. The Reluctant Fundamentalist and Disgraced present two common options that many “model minority” South Asian Muslims in the US face when confronted with prejudice and hostility. On the one hand, assimilation looks like a retreat from Muslim identity, as epitomized by Amir’s self-loathing in Disgraced. On the other, embracing Muslim identity—and rejecting the model minority myth—risks looking like radicalization, as Changez rejects his role as a model minority and returns to his homeland as a perceived fundamentalist. These portrayals resonate with South Asian Muslims' current, ongoing pressures, and capture the dilemmas of a South Asian Muslim identity caught between these two choices, and amid extremism from both sides.

▼ In this sociolinguistic study, qualitative interviews were used in examining discursive identity construction among russlanddeutsche Aussiedler. The interview group was composed of russlanddeutsche university students attending the Universität Mannheim in Germany, differentiating it from much of the previous research. In my analysis, working from a social constructionist perspective, I primarily make use of Positioning Theory and Critical Discourse Analytic techniques to show how the interviewees 1) construct groups; 2) relate to language; and 3) position themselves in relation to existing discourses in contemporary German society, including instances of resistance to those discourses. Ethnically Germans, but living on Russian/Soviet/post-Soviet territory for generations, Aussiedler have special claims to German citizenship and began their return to Germany after suffering mass repression for decades under the Soviet regime. In the aftermath of WWII, their emigration to Germany was initially limited, but reached high levels in the late 1980s and throughout the 1990s, as travel restrictions were relaxed and the Iron Curtain fell. Expecting to find acceptance as Deutsche unter Deutschen [Germans among Germans], the opposite often occurs: they are frequently categorized as ‘the Russians.’ Indeed, one of the most frequent comments made by members of this group is: In Russland waren wir Deutsche, hier sind wir Russen [In Russia we were Germans, here we are Russians]. In many respects, they have a stigmatized identity in both countries, Russia and Germany, and for this reason represent a particularly interesting group for identity research. Recent publications, most notably Reitemeier (2006a), have made mention of this ‘stigmatized identity’ and also of the fact that many Russlanddeutsche possess hybrid identities. These two concepts, stigma and hybridity, are explored throughout the thesis. The work begins by outlining the migratory, legal, and linguistic history of Russlanddeutsche. This is followed by an explanation of theoretical and methodological approaches which used to study the data, including Positioning Theory, stigma theory, a variant of Conversation Analysis, and Critical Discourse Analysis. The bulk of the thesis is then spent on the analysis of the qualitative interview data using those theories and methodologies. I conclude by summarizing my findings and suggesting areas for further research.

▼ This dissertation focuses on Rohingya people, with a special emphasis on Rohingya youth and young adults, and how they construct their identities. While Rohingya ethnic identity is deeply rooted in Burma, it is influenced by how they grow up and reach adulthood within a protracted situation in Bangladesh. Many Rohingya youth and young adults find it complicated to define who they are because they belong to a place, Burma, that does not consider them citizens, and they reside in a place, Bangladesh, that never recognizes them as residents. The uncertainty around Rohingya identity raises several questions: How does the experience of displacement and refugeeness in Bangladesh shape identity among Rohingya people, particularly among the youth and young adults? What is Rohingya identity? In what ways do they retain their Rohingya identity in the context of their non-citizen status in Bangladesh? While they are stateless, how are the social rights of citizenship experienced by Rohingya people? Using ethnographic methods, I spent nine months in Coxs Bazar, Bangladesh, between 2014 and 2016 to collect data for this research. I interviewed 44 Rohingya people. Rohingyas first arrived in Bangladesh in 1978. After that, many Rohingya people were born and/or raised in Bangladeshi refugee camps, and have never left, while others were forcefully repatriated by Bangladeshi government and then forced to return to Bangladesh again by the Burmese government during 1992-1993 (Abrar, 1995; Pittaway, 2008; Loescher & Milner, 2008; Ullah, 2011; Murshid, 2014). The findings of my research show that due to living in oppressive conditions, uncertainty, and the lack of an appropriate social environment, Rohingya people struggle with forming their identity. Their liminality, statelessness, and lack of rights have created an unsettled and hybrid form of identity for many youth and youth adults living within and outside the refugee camps. In this dissertation, I first describe the lives of Rohingya refugees, then I examine individual constructions of identity and how their sense of belonging is influenced by their refugeeness and lack of legal citizenship. Rohingya peoples struggle with identity formation can only be resolved when the Rohingya crisis comes to an end. Advisors/Committee Members: Kim, Ann H. (advisor).

L’émergence de nouvelles dramaturgies africaines francophones depuis les années 1990 annonce un bouleversement dans le paysage littéraire africain. Cette génération d’écrivains contemporains de la diaspora africaine convoquent les notions de fragmentation, déplacement et instabilité qui suggèrent une reconfiguration du chaos dans la production littéraire africaine francophone depuis les indépendances. L’histoire des littératures africaines depuis l’indépendance en 1960 d’une majorité de pays africains colonisés, est marquée par le thème du chaos avec cependant des différences notables. En effet, entre les années 1960 et 1970, les écrivains du « désenchantement » dénoncent le chaos politique et social de l’Afrique à la suite des nouveaux gouvernements autoritaires de la post-indépendance. Les esthétiques théâtrales négro-africaines de la fin des années 1970 et 1980, élaborent en revanche une sortie du chaos africain à partir d’une revalorisation et contextualisation moderne des traditions et mythes africains. Les années 1990 marquent une rupture puisque les nouvelles écritures théâtrales africaines mettent en forme l’espace performatif d’un « chaos-monde » qui témoigne des réalités hybrides de la diaspora africaine à l’échelle locale et globale. Une lecture croisée des oeuvres théâtrales de cette génération dont font partie Caya Makhélé (Congo), Koffi Kwahulé(Côte d’Ivoire), Marcel Zang (Cameroun), José Pliya (Bénin), Kossi Efoui (Togo), et Dieudonné Niangouna (Congo) permet de mettre en lumière les nouvelles approches techniques et esthétiques d’un chaos énergétique. L’étude détaillée de ces nouvelles mises en forme du chaos engage la compréhension de l’enjeu diasporique et la perspective transnationale dans les dramaturgies contemporaines africaines.

A new type of African Francophone theater has emerged since the 1990s, which announced a breaking point within the African literary landscape. This generation of contemporary writers from the African diaspora engages with notions of fragmentation, displacement, and instability that suggest a reconfiguration of chaos in Francophone African literary productionsince the Independences. The history of African literatures since 1960, when a large majorityof former African colonies became independent, is marked by the theme of chaos with significant differences. Indeed, between 1960 and 1970, writers of the « disenchantment »denounce social and political chaos in Africa following the emergence of new dictatorships inthe post-independence period, African theatrical aesthetics by the end of the 1970s andthrough the 1980s, on the contrary, work on an exit out of the African chaos from the perspective of revalorization, providing modern contextualizations for African myths andtraditions. Since the early 1990s a rupture is established within new African theater that creates a performative space of « chaos-monde », which manifests the hybrid reality of the African diaspora at local and global levels. ▼ Grande parte dos estudos hoje disponíveis, que abordam a relação entre gênero, identidade e cultura, refere-se às sociedades urbanizadas. Grupamentos que se caracterizam por outro de tipo de organização e contexto de vida, como os indígenas, permanecem praticamente fora do escopo das investigações, especialmente na Psicologia. Sendo o presente estudo apoiado na abordagem dialógica dos fenômenos psicológicos, concebe-se o desenvolvimento do self e da identidade como fenômeno relacional que apresenta uma face intrapessoal e outra interpessoal, entendendo que essas faces concorrem para a construção de um senso de si coerente, ao longo do tempo. Este trabalho busca contribuir para reverter o cenário acima delineado, investigando como mulheres da comunidade indígena xerente, situada ao norte de Tocantins, posicionam-se sobre a construção de sua identidade e condição feminina, em narrativas sobre suas histórias pessoais e acerca das transformações da cultura de seu povo. Os xerentes passaram a ter contato com elementos da cultura "branca", trazidos especialmente por missões evangelizadoras, há cerca de 200 anos. Hoje, os sistemas semióticos em que se inserem as atividades e valores sociais do grupo aglutinam elementos das duas esferas culturais, caracterizando a cultura xerente como cultura híbrida, em transformação. Participaram da pesquisa, de modo particular, seis mulheres dessa comunidade, com idades de 34 a 48 anos. Foram realizadas observações em contexto e entrevistas narrativas episódicas, que exploraram temas relativos à história cultural (mitos e ritos), ao casamento, ao trabalho, à educação, ao consumo e às perspectivas futuras do grupo a partir das vozes das mulheres. As narrativas das mulheres e os registros de observação foram analisados a partir das "zonas de sentido" identificadas e das vozes que emergiram do diálogo entre pesquisadora e participantes de pesquisa. Os resultados apontam que o processo de construção das identidades e posicionamentos de self das mulheres xerentes assume contornos particulares, no limiar entre as marcas culturais a que estão expostas. De um lado, fatores como a maior escolarização e a assunção de novos papéis políticos, no trabalho, na economia familiar e na relação com o consumo abrem novas zonas de possibilidades para a condição feminina, ao mesmo tempo em que a condição masculina se fragiliza, quando problemas como o desemprego e o alcoolismo passam a afetar os homens do grupo. Essas novas possibilidades, por outro lado, convivem com a reafirmação de posições de gênero bastante tradicionais no discurso das mulheres, no qual os papéis masculinos mais tradicionais são reafirmados, na mesma proporção em que a crescente importância das mulheres na organização social e política presente do grupo tende a ser minorada. ▼ This study explores how young Maltese women give meaning to the music they listen to and how this music is incorporated in everyday discourses and identities within the differing local contexts of their lives. This area of research has not attracted the attention of researchers and this study starts to fill this gap. The research was carried out in Malta, a post-colonial island with a population of approximately 400,000 people. Through purposive sampling and snowballing, 20 in-depth interviews were carried out with young Maltese women aged 16-34, from different social backgrounds. By looking at young Maltese women’s identities through their engagements with music, this study shows how girls experience the tensions between the opposing forces of Maltese traditional music and more modern globalised musical forms. Music was found to be a means of conspicuous leisure as well as a means of maintaining social difference and distinction. Musical taste and the social practices associated with that particular music was found to be a primary indicator of social class for Maltese girls. The significance of this study lies in the exploration of a topic that has not yet been properly researched. It combines the Maltese context and the gendered nature of identity formation in Malta’s music scene. The framework of categorisation of respondents is also significant since rather than categorising respondents according to the music they listen to, it categorises respondents through the ways in which they engage with their music. By developing Willis’s (1978) analytical framework, participants were placed into four categories of Fully Committed, Committed, Active Drifters and Passive Drifters. For each category, the most prominent characteristics of participants’ music identities are analysed. These include their understandings of social and cultural capital, structure and agency, negotiations of social boundaries and identity formation. The idea of distinct music subcultures is questioned as, in their everyday lives, young women in Malta rarely conform with distinct cultural groups but form parts of multiple groups within the contexts of their lives. Moreover, processes of hybridization seem to have erased what might have been understood as a subculture’s distinguishing characteristics. These have often become adopted and eventually absorbed by mainstream culture making distinct subcultures problematic. The findings of the research imply tensions between traditional and modern lifestyles that are, in turn, associated with different strata of social class.

Introduktion: Sedan ändringen i lag (2010:879) om allmännyttiga kommunala bostadsaktiebolag år 2011 ska de kommunala bostadsbolagen agera enligt affärsmässiga principer. Affärsmässiga principer innebär bland annat att avkastningen ska vara marknadsmässig för att säkerställa en stark och neutral konkurrens på bostadsmarknaden. Genom att jämföra avkastningen i kommunala bostadsbolag med privata bostadsbolag undersöker denna studie om offentligt ägande innebär en skillnad som kan snedvrida konkurrensen. Syfte: Syftet med denna studie är att jämföra avkastningen i kommunala bostadsbolag med avkastningen i privata bostadsbolag. Metod: Studien har en deduktiv ansats med ett eklektiskt teoretiskt angreppssätt för att formulera studiens hypotes. De kvantitativa tvärsnittsdata som studien baseras på har samlats in genom årsredovisningar och undersökts genom regressionsanalyser för att pröva studiens hypotes. Slutsats: Studiens slutsats är att kommunala bostadsbolaghar lägre avkastning än privata bostadsbolag. Analysen visar att räntabilitet på både totalt och eget kapital är signifikant lägre för kommunala bostadsbolag även när det kontrolleras för faktorerna ägarspridning, agentens agerande, storlek, bostadsmarknadens styrka, utdelningar och extern finansiering.

Introduction: Since the change in Law (2010:879) on public municipal housing companies in 2011 the municipal housing companies should now act according to commercial principals. Among other things commercial principals implies that the rate of return should be adjusted to the conditions on the housing market to ensure a strong and neutral competition. By comparing the rate of return in municipal housing companies with the rate of return in private housing companies this study examines if public ownership make a difference that can distort competition. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to compare the rate of return in municipal housing companies with the rate of return in private housing companies. Method: The study has a deductive approach with an eclectic theoretical perspective to formulate the hypothesis. The quantitative cross-sectional data have been gathered through annual reports and then examined in regression analyzes to test the hypothesis. Conclusion: The conclusion of this study is that municipal housing companies do have a lower rate of return than private housing companies. The analyzes show that both return on assets and return on equity is significantly lower for municipal housing companies even when controlled for concentration of ownership, agent behavior, size, the strength in the housing market, dividends and external financing.
