▼ This thesis falls into the scientific area of the evaluation of integrated work-based learning programs in the curricula of higher education institutions, as well as explores the contribution of internships both to the completion of tertiary education and to an easier transition of tertiary education graduates to the labor market. It draws on the research methodology of the quality “paradigm” in educational research, the case study and, more specifically, the evaluative case study, qualitative content analysis and the phenomenological approach. Utilizing qualitative research methodology, this research aims at the evaluation of the practicum placement program in the major of Continuous Education at the Department of Educational and Social Policy at the University of Macedonia, during the academic years 2010-2011 and 2011-2012. The research aspires to understanding and describing the “phenomenon” on the part of those involved in it, namely: a) the Students, b) the Organizers: Supervisors, the Internship Academic Coordinator and a Cooperating Teacher and c) Mentors: representatives of the cooperating organizations during the implementation of the work-based learning program. The research was conducted with the use of different research tools, such as: a) interviews (with Students and Organizers), b) questionnaires (with Students) and c) questionnaires instead of interviews (with Mentors); in parallel official documents were examined, such as the Study Guide of the Department, the work-based learning curriculum and the updated institutionalizing decision of work-based learning program procedure. Qualitative Content Analysis was implemented for the analysis of the research material, with the use of the system of categories, the latter having arisen inductively from the answers of the respondents involved. The induction system of categories consists of thirteen categories, which fall into four Axes of analysis, as follows: 1st Axis: Components of the work-based learning program, 2nd Axis: Implementation of the work-based learning program, 3rd Axis: Results of the work-based learning program and employability prerequisites of graduates and 4th Axis: Suggestions for the improvement of the work-based learning program. The research showed that through the work-based learning program functional connection between academic theory and professional practice takes place, the first structured professional experience is acquired by students, who experience the role of an employee in real working life conditions; in parallel, social and personal competences are being cultivated, such as communication, cooperation or conflict resolution, together with the IT competence and the competence of communication in foreign languages as well as the opportunity to develop students’ initiative. The high level of investigative activity during the last 25 years into information systems and information technology acceptance and diffusion, is related to individual consumer decisions of information and communication technologies acceptance and adoption. As a consequence, previous research activity was analyzed along a number of dimensions including units of analysis, research paradigms, methodologies and methods, theories and theoretical constructs and technologies/contexts that explain ones decision to use information and communication technologies. In the literature of information systems, the relationship among beliefs, attitude, intention to use and usage behavior, which are typically based in the initial decision to use or reject a technology, is being evidenced (Venkatesh et al., 2003). To date, the high level of investigated activity that studies acceptance and adoption factors of technology based services has provided many adoption, as well as rejection, predictors of them by consumers. However, there is lacking investigative activity concerning the factors that affect technology based services acceptance and adoption within the Greek culture, as well as the different influence degrees of them to the various e-service industries. The present research investigates these two issues primarily by replicating and adjusting fundamental models of technology acceptance to Greek consumers and then by comparing four different e-service industries. At the end, a new technology acceptance and adoption model is being proposed. The thesis starts with an extensive literature review to the existing technology acceptance models, by providing the necessary information for understanding the structural factors of each one. Then, five quantitative and one qualitative field researches are designed and implemented, in order to answers the research questions.The present thesis offers gradual knowledge to the literature of e-services acceptance and adoption, by answering questions of both theoretical and practical importance, for the identification and measurement of the factors that affect acceptance and adoption of them within the Greek culture, while highlighting the future promising utilization of the research results.

▼ The purpose of this PhD thesis is to develop a combined QFD (Quality Function Development) methodological framework to capture and predict the true "Voice of the Customer" (“WHATs”) and to accurately translate it to service specifications (“HOWs”), resulting in improved service design and enhanced quality. More specifically, the focus is placed on increasing the effectiveness of QFD and the robustness of the produced outcomes regarding the decision making process. In this respect, techniques of Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM), Linear Programming (LP), Fuzzy Logic and Stochastic Processes are introduced into the QFD method (a) to address the inherent subjectivity, fuzziness and vagueness of customers’ preferences; (b) to prioritize “HOWs”; and (c) to predict the future "Voice of the Customer".Initially, the systematic and comprehensive review of the literature has provided the rationale for developing the QFD-DEAHP-DEANP methodology (Data Εnvelopment Analytic Hierarchy Process- Data Envelopment Analytic Network Process), which is studied within the banking sector. Subsequently, the LP-GW-Fuzzy AHP methodology (Linear Programming method to Generate Weights in Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process) is proposed to be incorporated into the QFD framework. In particular, Fuzzy-AHP and the linear programming method LP-GW-AHP are embedded into QFD (QFD-LP-GW-Fuzzy AHP) to capture and prioritize the actual "Voice of the Customer". Due to the fact that customers’ preferences are characterized by vagueness and diversity of meaning, in many cases crisp numbers fail to express the subjectivity and elusiveness of decision-making. First, the proposed methodological framework converts the linguistic assessment of customer requirements to triangular fuzzy numbers (TFNs), which are used to construct the pairwise comparison matrices of AHP. By employing the TFNs to express customers' preferences and cross-functional team’s assessments, the inherent subjectivity of human judgments is taken into account and becomes an integral part of the proposed methodology. Then, the LP-GW-Fuzzy AHP utilizes the principles of linear programming to replace the eigenvalue method (EV) in the computation of the priority vector of “HOWs”. This improves the hitherto inaccurate prioritization of “HOWs”. A key feature of the LP-GW-Fuzzy AHP methodology is that it solves only one LP model for deriving local weights from one or multiple comparison matrices in case of group decision-making and it does not require normalizing the derived weight vector, avoiding rank reversal phenomenon. The LP-GW-Fuzzy AHP methodology compared to the EV is at least equally successful and more easily applicable. Moreover, it produces the true relative weights for perfectly consistent pairwise comparison matrices. A wider scope of this thesis is to investigate the gestural know-how of a musician and specifically of a pianist, which includes not only the acquisition of theoretical knowledge but also that of practical skills. Emphasis is given, in this thesis, in the expressive gesture and its variations. The gesture recognition is accomplished by using machine-learning algorithms and motion capture technologies. According to the literature review, several research approaches have been conducted aiming not only at the recognition of the performed gesture but also at the sonification of the gesture. However, a weakness that emerges is that the existing methodologies fail to take into account expressive variations that may occur during the performance of the incoming gesture with respect to the template gesture. This results in the recognition not being correct throughout the performance of the expressive gesture and in overlaps occurring between the different classes of classification. As a consequence, the sonification of the expressive gesture is not fluid and immediate.For this purpose, the proposed thesis presents a novel methodology which aims at a) the stochastic modeling, b) the gesture recognition and c) the sonification of the expressive gesture of the user, taking into account possible variations that may occur during the performance of the expressive gesture. This is achieved with the development of the Expert Operational Model, through which the confidence bounds are extracted. The added value of the Expert Operational Model, and thus of the confidence bounds, is that, during the recognition, the system prevents numerical errors that may occur due to variations, made either intentionally or not, and which may also be regarded as expressive elements of the performance of the gesture. The recognition of the expressive gesture is implemented by using machine-learning algorithms and specifically the Particle Filter algorithm. In addition, sound synthesis methods are applied to gesture sonification, providing the user the ability to resynthesize and manipulate the sound continuously and in real-time.The evaluation of the proposed methodology in comparison with established techniques and machine-learning algorithms, shows higher percentages of recognition, accuracy and similarity between the produced sound and the original. Another observation is that the quality of the produced and resynthesized sound in real-time, directly depends on the quality of the recognition of the expressive gesture. The better the performance of the incoming expressive gesture, the better, more fluid and without oscillations is the recognition of the expressive gesture. Hence, the re-synthesis of the sound is better and more fluid. Finally, the positive results of the evaluation, along with the proposed theoretical framework, confirm the efficient use of the confidence bounds in the recognition and sonification of the expressive gesture.

Contemporary software systems evolve over a large number of versions due to the need for continuous adaptive and corrective maintenance. The duration and cost of this process call for software systems that can be extended or modified in an effortless and rapid way. To this end, the maintainability of such systems can be enhanced by taking advantage of software history and analyzing the evolution of the source code and other artifacts stored in version control systems. In this context, inspired by applications of networks in other domains, this thesis proposes graph-based tools and techniques for different aspects of software lifecycle that facilitate the evolutionary analysis of object-oriented systems. A fundamental process that determines not only the structure of a software system but also the future maintainability, is the distribution of feature implementation code to different software modules, also known as feature scattering. Towards the better understanding of this phenomenon, a set of techniques for the analysis of the evolution of feature scattering, based on the classes and methods involved in the implementation of high-level, distinct and observable pieces of functionality is introduced. The proposed analyses have been applied on several versions of four open-source projects. Based on the results, the applied techniques appear to be promising since they allow software stakeholders to assess the evolution of feature scattering in various ways, thus gaining insight into the associated implications. Furthermore, in this thesis an attempt to develop a prediction model capable of forecasting trends in the evolution of networks representing Java systems has been made. The proposed model incorporates findings regarding the growth patterns of software networks, such as the conformance to the preferential attachment model, the duplication model, the effect of node age, and the number of node and edge removals. Moreover, by acknowledging the importance of domain specific characteristics, the model has been enhanced by rules specific to object-oriented design. Evaluation against ten open-source projects showed that the proposed forecasting approach can provide sufficient insight to the future evolution trends. Software maintenance can benefit from the application of such models by focusing on parts of the network whose properties tend to deteriorate. Finally, by acknowledging the lack of a tool for effortless software evolution analysis, a platform for the facilitation of software engineering research has been developed. The tool under the name ‘SEAgle’ is a web-based platform that enables users to analyze any git open source repository that is freely available on the internet. SEAgle calculates a multitude of metrics of three different categories and publishes the results in a free online web page and renders them available through well documented REST web services.

▼ This thesis introduces, for the first time, acceptance models for mobile-based assessment from both students’ and teachers’ perspectives. The thesis also investigates motivational issues associated with mobile-based assessment and suggests, for the first time, a comprehensive theoretical framework about student motivation in mobile-based assessment. The experimentally evaluated proposed acceptance models are: (i) the Mobile-Based Assessment Acceptance Model (MBAAM) that explains and predicts students’ Behavioral Intention to Use mobile-based assessment in terms of Perceived Ease of Use and Perceived Usefulness and the constructs of Facilitating Conditions, Social Influence, Mobile Device Anxiety, Personal Innovativeness, Mobile-Self-Efficacy, Perceived Trust, Content, Cognitive Feedback, User Interface and Perceived Ubiquity Value; (ii) the Teachers’ Acceptance of Mobile-Based Assessment (TAMBA) model that explains and predicts teachers’ Behavioral Intention to Use mobile-based assessment in terms of Perceived Ease of Use, Perceived Usefulness and the constructs of Social Influence, Facilitating Conditions, Mobile Self-Efficacy and Output Quality; (iii) the Mobile Based Assessment - Motivational and Acceptance Model (MBA-MAM) that introduces into the Technology Acceptance Model the constructs of autonomy, competence and relatedness from the Self-Determination Theory of Motivation. The firstly introduced model explains and predicts Behavioral Intention to Use mobile-based assessment in terms of students’ perceived autonomy, competence and relatedness and also in terms of the features of mobile technologies, user profile, educational content and instructional methods used. This thesis also provides evidence for the impact of mobile-based assessment on student motivation: (i) mobile-based homework self-assessments, in comparison to conventional paper-based assessments, have a positive impact on the motivation and performance of low achieving students; (ii) mobile-assessment micro-learning and assessment enhances students’ motivation in terms of perceived autonomy, competence and relatedness, and also improves students’ factual knowledge; (iii) the enhanced levels of autonomy, competence and relatedness result in higher levels of student engagement in mobile-assisted inquiry-based science learning. Grounding on the Self-Determination Theory of Motivation and building on the aforementioned empirical evidence, the study proposes the Mobile-Based Assessment Motivation Framework (MBAMF). It is a two dimensional framework that provides the links among the technological affordances offered by mobile devices, the self-directed learning strategies employing mobile technologies and specific instructional methods based on the Self-Determination Theory. In the modern era, which is characterized by the rise of e-businesses, the need for interoperability and flexibility acquires immense importance, particularly in the context of e-commerce transactions. Web Services (WS) provide the means for the utilization of the aforementioned features, as they aid the communication between heterogeneous systems, while, in addition, enable the reuse of their functionality, both as individual WS and within the context of service compositions. However, the abundance of available WS makes the selection of the appropriate WS, which would satisfy specific business needs, a difficult task. The problem grows exponentially in composition scenarios. In order to resolve this issue, non-functional characteristics of similar WS are often evaluated, thus enabling the selection of the optimal services. In this Thesis, a number of solutions for WS composition are presented, based on proposed frameworks and algorithms. In addition, as e-commerce transactions require the fulfillment of certain properties, rigorous methods for the development and composition of WS are also being examined. Through the proposed methodology and the application of model checking techniques, specific properties, such as deadlock-freedom and business properties, can be ensured in standalone WS, as well as in value-added compositions.

Στη σύγχρονη εποχή, που χαρακτηρίζεται από την άνθηση του ηλεκτρονικού επιχειρείν, η ανάγκη διαλειτουργικότητας και ευελιξίας αποκτά ιδιάζουσα σημασία, ιδιαίτερα στα πλαίσια συναλλαγών ηλεκτρονικού εμπορίου. Οι Υπηρεσίες Ιστού (ΥΙ) αποτελούν μια τεχνολογία που παρέχει τις παραπάνω δυνατότητες, αφού επιτρέπουν την επικοινωνία ετερογενών συστημάτων, ενώ παράλληλα καθιστούν εφικτή την επαναχρησιμοποίηση της λειτουργικότητάς τους, τόσο ως μεμονωμένες ΥΙ όσο και στα πλαίσια ευρύτερων συνθέσεων. Το μεγάλο πλήθος διαθέσιμων ΥΙ, ωστόσο, καθιστά δύσκολη την επιλογή των κατάλληλων ΥΙ για την ικανοποίηση επιχειρηματικών αναγκών αλλά και την κατασκευή της βέλτιστης δυνατής σύνθεσής τους. Για τον σκοπό αυτό, συχνά πραγματοποιείται αξιολόγηση των μη λειτουργικών χαρακτηριστικών των εναλλακτικών ΥΙ για την επιλογή της καταλληλότερης. Στα πλαίσια αυτής της διατριβής παρουσιάζεται, αρχικά, ένα σύνολο μεθοδολογιών για την αντιμετώπιση του προβλήματος της σύνθεσης ΥΙ, μέσω της αξιοποίησης κατάλληλων πλαισίων και αλγορίθμων. Επιπρόσθετα, καθώς οι συναλλαγές ηλεκτρονικού εμπορίου και οι λοιπές επιχειρηματικές συναλλαγές απαιτούν την εξασφάλιση συγκεκριμένων ιδιοτήτων από τις εμπλεκόμενες ΥΙ, πραγματοποιήθηκε έρευνα σε μεθόδους αυστηρής ανάπτυξης και σύνθεσης ΥΙ. Μέσω της προτεινόμενης μεθοδολογίας και των τεχνικών ελέγχου μοντέλων (model checking) που παρουσιάζονται, είναι εφικτή η εξασφάλιση ιδιοτήτων που ικανοποιούν τις διάφορες επιθυμητές ανάγκες, όπως είναι η έλλειψη αδιεξόδων και οι ανάγκες επιχειρηματικής λογικής, κατά την ανάπτυξη και σύνθεση ΥΙ.

The present thesis explores the role played by Cost of Quality, namely the PAF model, in Food and Beverage enterprises in Greece. The extent of the Quality Costing implementation is examined in relation to the size of the enterprises, the quality certification they hold, the sub-sector in which they operate, etc. Moreover, it emphasizes the importance of the Quality Cost categories (Prevention-Appraisal-Failure) and seeks to ‘link’ them to the maturity of the Quality Management System of the companies. In order to investigate the above issues, a questionnaire is used to collect the necessary data. The questionnaire was prepared after a thorough study of the relevant literature and was sent to the Finance and / or Quality Managers. The analysis of the data was conducted by Multiple Correspondence Analysis and Hierarchical Cluster Analysis. The results show that the extent of recording and measurement of Quality Costs is directly related to the size of the enterprises, as well as to ISO/HACCP certification. Companies with high turnover, large numbers of employees and/or quality certification focus on monitoring and controlling Quality Costs and the production of quality products. In addition, the sub-subsector of each company (i.e. Cereal-Flour, Fruit-Vegetables, Beverages, etc.) appears to be an important factor, as its relationship with Quality Costing is captured in the survey. At the same time, the findings show that the individual components of the Quality Cost categories, as well as the expenses associated with them, determine the sophistication of a Quality Costing System and are linked to the maturity of an organization’s Quality Management. The high cost of External Failure is linked to early stages of company maturity, while emphasis on Appraisal Costs implies more rigorous Quality Management and cost monitoring systems.

H παρούσα διατριβή διερευνά το ρόλο που διαδραματίζει το Κόστος Ποιότητας, και συγκεκριμένα το μοντέλο PAF, στις επιχειρήσεις Τροφίμων και Ποτών στην Ελλάδα. Εξετάζεται η έκταση εφαρμογής της κοστολόγησης Ποιότητας σε σχέση με το μέγεθος των επιχειρήσεων, την πιστοποίηση Ποιότητας που κατέχουν, τον υπο-κλάδο στον οποίο δραστηριοποιούνται κ.ό.κ. Επιπλέον, τονίζεται η σημασία των κατηγοριών του Κόστους Ποιότητας (Πρόληψη-Αξιολόγηση-Αποτυχία) και ερευνάται η σύνδεσή τους με την ωριμότητα του συστήματος Διοίκησης Ποιότητας των επιχειρήσεων και της διαμόρφωσης της στάσης τους σχετικά με την Ποιότητα και το κόστος της. Για την διερεύνηση των παραπάνω ερωτημάτων, χρησιμοποιείται η τεχνική συλλογής δεδομένων με ερωτηματολόγιο. Το ερωτηματολόγιο συντάχθηκε μετά από επισταμένη μελέτη της σχετικής βιβλιογραφίας και εστάλη στους Υπεύθυνους Οικονομικών ή/και Ποιότητας των επιχειρήσεων. Η ανάλυση των δεδομένων έγινε με την Παραγοντική Ανάλυση των Πολλαπλών Αντιστοιχιών και την Ανιούσα Ιεραρχική Ταξινόμηση. Τα αποτελέσματα που προκύπτουν καταδεικνύουν πως η έκταση της καταγραφής και της μέτρησης του Κόστους Ποιότητας έχει άμεση σχέση με το μέγεθος των επιχειρήσεων, καθώς και με την πιστοποίηση ISO/HACCP.…

▼ Introduction and aims: The purpose of the present thesis was the study of the educational environment of a Medical School in Greece, in order to explore differences between the principles of professionalism, as they are taught via both the formal curriculum and the "informal" learning by example which medical students experience in their daily interactions. This informal learning is referred to as the “hidden curriculum” of medical education and it has been linked with the development of professional identity among medical students.The thesis aimed to answer the following research questions: what are the core features of the hidden curriculum?; how do the features of the hidden curriculum affect medical students’ emotional and professional development?; what type of daily incidents occurring in medical school or the hospital do medical students consider important?; which aspects of such incidents facilitate or inhibit learning?; which types of experiences do students consider the most memorable?; which are the emotions and the emotion regulation processes that medical students report when experiencing memorable incidents? Which reflection processes do students use to evaluate memorable incidents and their professional learning?Methods: Four studies were designed and conducted in order to answer the abovementioned research questions. A systematic review of the literature was conducted to synthesize the existing literature regarding the hidden curriculum of medical education and explore the hidden messages of medical education that shape medical students’ emotional and professional development. Secondly, a diary study with medical students at the preclinical and clinical stage of medical training was conducted in order to explore the daily events that shape medical students’ learning regarding professionalism.Thirdly, in addition to the diary study, two focus groups were conducted to validate the themes identified in the diary study and explored issues related to professionalism at a deeper level.Fourthly, a qualitative study based on critical incidents using individual interviews was conducted, to explore major events affecting the emotional and professional development of medical students. Additionally, we investigated the emotions experienced by students and the ways they dealt with them (i.e., emotion regulation strategies employed). Finally, students were asked to reflect on the knowledge gained from the events and their level of self- reflection was evaluated.Results: According to the results of the literature review, medical students are exposed to multiple and often conflicting messages as to what constitutes professionalism. They have to decode these conflicting messages in order to build a professional identity that will facilitate the socialization in the clinical setting. ▼ This PhD dissertation, studies the transformative impact of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) on the business model of hotels.Today, more than ever, new ICTs are dramatically changing the hospitality industry, requiring the reconfiguration of the business model of the firms operating in the hospitality business. The positive impact of ICT integration highlights the necessity of the transformation of the hotels’ business model, which are required to adapt to the new reality.Moving to a new, more efficient business model is an uncharted and demanding high-risk challenge for the hotel business that requires a good understanding of the current business model as well as the existence of a secure change framework.Analyzing critically and in depth the existing literature, the hereby study attempts a thorough presentation of the concept of the business model, its theoretical frameworks, as well as the contemporary transformational change models.The composition of the critical transformational elements leads to the design of the prototype framework of the Business Model Evolution Framework. The findings of the survey, which was conducted on a representative sample of Greek hotels, as well as the examination of the research hypotheses via the use of Structured Equation Modeling (SEM), are used to validate the theoretical model, paving the way for its further implementation.The main objective of the dissertation is the development of a theoretical framework for the evolution of the hotel's business model, which can be used for the smooth and risk-free integration of new technologies, allowing for performance optimization. In terms of the research methodology, the following steps were followed:I. Based on an extensive literature review, the theoretical ICT induced business model construct was developed. II. Respectively to the theoretical model, the research hypotheses were developed.III. These hypotheses formed the research sample that was considered necessary to conduct the empirical research.IV. According to the theoretical and operational model, an on-line structured questionnaire was constructed.V. The questionnaire was sent to 870 hotels in the wider region of Macedonia - Thrace. The responses accounted for 10% of the total population of hotels in the area.VI. Data was analyzed with the use of the IBM SPSS software package.VII. The hypotheses were examined via the SEM method and with the use of the IBM SPSS / AMOS software package.The findings of the survey are of particular interest. More specifically:First, it is proven that the majority of hotels do not use any specific methodology when integrating new ICTs.However, the results of their responses validate the suggested change model, both in terms of the employment of its individual stages, as well as in the ranking of their implementation.In addition, research findings confirm the hypothesized positive relationship between the integration of new ICTs and improved performance indicators of the hotel, which is even more evident in hotels that follow a…

The overall aim of this PhD thesis is to demonstrate how the phenomenon of fun is crucial to better understanding work life. The first study was a meta-synthesis of the literature were workplace fun was conceptualized as a job resource and integrated into the Job Demands and Resources Model. Overall, the synthesis revealed that there was a significant gap in the literature with regard to qualitative research exploring the meaning of fun as a workplace phenomenon. The second study was qualitative one with data collected via individual interviews with the goal to understand fun in the workplace as a psychological phenomenon, to list activities that are considered fun, and to explore concepts related to fun. For the third study fun was explored in the hospital environment. Two focus groups were conducted with medical residents who worked in public hospitals of north Greece in order to reveal how someone can have fun while working in a hospital, to understand the attitudes towards having fun and to get an insight to the obstacles related to it. The fourth study used also a qualitative approach aiming at exploring positive relationships in the school, revealing how teachers can have fun while working and understanding whether fun based relationships can enhance collaboration. The participants were teachers who worked in public primary schools. The fifth study was a cross-sectional study and employed individuals participated by filling in a questionnaire. The aim of this study was two-fold; to explore and validate a more comprehensive taxonomy of workplace fun, and secondly to examine the role of fun in relation to key organizational outcomes; burnout, engagement, need for recovery from work, turnover intentions and chronic social stressors. Also, the roles of benevolent leadership, freedom of speech and trust were examined. In terms of the first aim, nine fun related variables were identified; playful fun, fun events, fun special events, management support for fun, gossip, personal freedoms, organized fun, pure organic fun, and socializing fun. These nine workplace fun factors were categorized in three clusters of fun types; (1) fun climate consisting of the dimensions (a) management support for fun and (b) personal freedoms, (2) managed fun consisting of the dimensions (c) fun events and (d) special fun events, and (3) organic fun consisting of (e) organized fun, (f) socializing fun, (g) pure organic fun, (h) playful fun, and (i) gossip. Management support for fun emerged as the most important predictor of outcomes as it correlated with and predicted all the variables of this study in accordance to the hypotheses. All categories of workplace fun functioned as a job resource confirming its enhancing role, and its buffering effects were suggested by the results of this study confirming its protective role.

The first essay investigates return and volatility spillovers οn stock markets of twelve selected Balkan, Slavic and Eastern countries. Research focuses on a decennial period, from 2006 till 2015. Analysis, which employs an augmented univariate AR-EGARCH model, is based on a “bouquet” of eight parallel equations. Two additional explanatory variables are tested; namely, the change of exchange rates of each country’s domestic currency to the US dollar, and the return of S&P 500 index during the previous period. They are used not only separately, but in combination as well, with and without the liquidity factor. According to the empirical results, return and volatility spillovers are confirmed for the majority of the cases, no matter the different approaches. Furthermore, the positive sign for the coefficients about the exchange rates and about the S&P 500 index is verified for most of the occasions. Moreover, the leverage effect is present in several cases. In addition, outcomes illustrate that trading volume’s coefficient mainly carries a positive sign and also that this variable accounts for spillovers effects in return and volatility. Overall, it can be concluded that the formed univariate AR-EGARCH models, capture successfully the effects of volatility transmission in the examined stock markets. The second essay examines the hypothesis that some kind of feedback trading strategy is followed by a share of participants οn stock markets of twelve selected Balkan, Slavic and Eastern countries. Study covers a decennial period, from 2006 till 2015. Analysis employs a couple of parallel models. Firstly, the feedback trading model introduced by Sentana and Wadhani and secondly the exponential autoregressive model suggested by LeBaron. These theoretical frameworks, together with a FIGARCH(1,d,1) approach, allows us to draw conclusions about the presence of feedback traders in stock markets. Both models assume two different groups of traders, on one hand the so-called “rational” investors that build their portfolio by perusing firms’ fundamentals, and on the other hand the “noise” speculators that ignore fundamentals and base their decisions on a positive (negative) feedback trading strategy. In particular, they buy (sell) stocks when prices rise and sell (buy) stocks when prices fall. Empirical results reveal that feedback trading strategies indeed exist in the examined stock markets during the period considered. As far as the type of feedback is concerned, negative feedback trading prevails over positive feedback trading for the majority of cases.

In this dissertation, an innovative approach for the training of a new chanter (apprentice) through a continuous improvement process of interpretation in relation to the same interpretation of a teacher is presented. The proposed approach utilizes the multimodal – multimedia signal handling (sound and video) and the combined use of innovative appliances for human-computer interaction. Moreover, it includes the formation of a hymn-recognition system based on a collection which has developed from recordings of teachers and apprentices’ interpretations.For the purposes of the proposed approach, an innovative training methodology that utilizes machine learning techniques has been developed. More specifically, the methods used for system’s training are based on modeling of multimodal signal through the use of Hidden-Markov-Models (HMM) and Dynamic Time Wrapping (DTW) techniques. In this way, after the recognition of the apprentice’s interpretation in relation to the corresponding interpretation of the teacher, a comparison between the two hymns is performed based on the musical similarity of their tonality. The signals of the two hymns are temporarily fragmented based on their musical beat characteristic. In order to find the musical beat, suitable for human-computer interaction techniques of computer vision are implemented. Therefore, the perception of the movement of the teacher’s or the apprentice’s right hand leads to the extraction of the musical beat of their interpretation. The results of the two hymns comparison are exported as feedback from the system. In the context of this interaction, the new chanter is being informed about the correctness of his/hers interpretation in relation with the same interpretation of the teacher.The evaluation of the system based on the recognition of the hymns through the use of multimodal signal has been accomplished through a comparative study of related research works and has shown higher percentages of successful recognition of hymns. As far as it concerns the process of comparing two recognized hymns by using computer vision technologies, the positive results coming from the retroaction of the system, regarding the musical similarity of their tonality, confirm the efficient use of the training methodology in order the apprentice’s interpretation to be improved.The proposed training methodology belongs to the domain of human-computer interaction and is expected to contribute significantly in the preservation and spread of our cultural legacy and more specifically of the Byzantine Music (BM).

▼ The Job Characteristics Model is widely accepted as a conceptual tool for addressing problems related to employees’ motivation, dissatisfaction and organisational performance. Therefore, this study attempts to apply Hackman and Oldham Job Characteristics Model (JCM) by among the five core dimensions of autonomy, skill variety, task identity, task significance and feedback and job satisfaction and employees’ turnover in the Libyan oil companies located in Benghazi city. Also, to explore the current situation of organisational determinants of job satisfaction in the Libyan oil companies and to investigate its correlation with employees’ job satisfaction. These factors (pay/rewards, supervision, promotion opportunity, relationship with co-workers and work conditions) are tested empirically in the companies studied. A total of 400 questionnaires were collected and 20 interviews were conducted in four oil companies. The main findings of the study confirm the positive correlations among the five core dimensions of the JCM and job satisfaction. Also, organisational factors were found to influence employees’ job satisfaction as the employees were satisfied with their pay/rewards, supervision, promotion opportunity, relationship with co-workers and working conditions. Moreover, employees have shown more concern for factors such as job security and change in the social status. Also, it was found that employees’ turnover increased in relation to security and social factors such as the absence of safety and security in the oil fields after the Libyan uprising, especially those oil fields located in the Eastern region. It was also found that the correlations among job satisfaction and employees’ turnover was negative and the correlation among the five core dimensions of the JCM model and employees’ turnover were negative too. The study makes a significant contribution to knowledge in theory and practice. Among such contributions are identification of gaps in the literature on job satisfaction and the core dimension of job characteristics model. ▼ Construction projects in developing countries may suffer from time overruns, which are associated with cost overruns. This research project investigated both time and cost overruns on high-rise building projects in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Surprisingly, preliminary data analysis showed negligible cost overruns in comparison to time overruns. So, further analysis o f cost overruns was not considered in this thesis. This research project also investigated how the causes o f time-overruns can be mitigated. 72 time-overrun and 22 cost-overrun variables were identified through a literature review. These variables were taken as parameters and a personal interview survey was conducted with developers, consultants, contractors and project managers using semistructured questionnaire. A similar second survey was conducted using 22 measures, which can mitigate time- overruns. Data analysis involved the relative importance index to rank the variables, factors analysis to reduce variables to factors with minimum loss of data, stepwise regression to find links among factors in successive stages of construction process and multiple regression to explain delays in terms of factors. The main causes o f time-overruns were ‘cash flow’, ‘planning and scheduling deficiency’ and ‘design changes’. A scree graph identified 31 important variables that caused delays but factor analysis reduced these to 14 factors. Stepwise regression found no strong links among the factors to identify them as reasons for delay in successive stages of the construction project. A multiple regression model explained about 85% of the variance of the delays using eight factors. The main individual measures mitigating time-overruns were ‘improvement of cash flow’, ‘improvement o f communication and coordination among project participants’ and ‘development o f robust planning and scheduling instruments’. Factor analysis produced ten representative factors. Stepwise regression could not find strong links among factors mitigating time-overruns in successive stages of the construction project.

▼ Current Ambient Intelligence and Intelligent Environment research focuses on the interpretation of a subject’s behaviour at the activity level by logging the Activity of Daily Living (ADL) such as eating, cooking, etc. In general, the sensors employed (e.g. PIR sensors, contact sensors) provide low resolution information. Meanwhile, the expansion of ubiquitous computing allows researchers to gather additional information from different types of sensor which is possible to improve activity analysis. Based on the previous research about sitting posture detection, this research attempts to further analyses human sitting activity. The aim of this research is to use non-intrusive low cost pressure sensor embedded chair system to recognize a subject’s activity by using their detected postures. There are three steps for this research, the first step is to find a hardware solution for low cost sitting posture detection, second step is to find a suitable strategy of sitting posture detection and the last step is to correlate the time-ordered sitting posture sequences with sitting activity. The author initiated a prototype type of sensing system called IntelliChair for sitting posture detection. Two experiments are proceeded in order to determine the hardware architecture of IntelliChair system. The prototype looks at the sensor selection and integration of various sensor and indicates the best for a low cost, non-intrusive system. Subsequently, this research implements signal process theory to explore the frequency feature of sitting posture, for the purpose of determining a suitable sampling rate for IntelliChair system. For second and third step, ten subjects are recruited for the sitting posture data and sitting activity data collection. The former dataset is collected byasking subjects to perform certain pre-defined sitting postures on IntelliChair and it is used for posture recognition experiment. The latter dataset is collected by asking the subjects to perform their normal sitting activity routine on IntelliChair for four hours, and the dataset is used for activity modelling and recognition experiment. For the posture recognition experiment, two Support Vector Machine (SVM) based classifiers are trained (one for spine postures and the other one for leg postures), and their performance evaluated. Hidden Markov Model is utilized for sitting activity modelling and recognition in order to establish the selected sitting activities from sitting posture sequences.2. After experimenting with possible sensors, Force Sensing Resistor (FSR) is selected as the pressure sensing unit for IntelliChair. Eight FSRs are mounted on the seat and back of a chair to gather haptic (i.e., touch-based) posture information. ▼ Current Ambient Intelligence and Intelligent Environment research focuses on the interpretation of a subject’s behaviour at the activity level by logging the Activity of Daily Living (ADL) such as eating, cooking, etc. In general, the sensors employed (e.g. PIR sensors, contact sensors) provide low resolution information. Meanwhile, the expansion of ubiquitous computing allows researchers to gather additional information from different types of sensor which is possible to improve activity analysis. Based on the previous research about sitting posture detection, this research attempts to further analyses human sitting activity. The aim of this research is to use non-intrusive low cost pressure sensor embedded chair system to recognize a subject’s activity by using their detected postures. There are three steps for this research, the first step is to find a hardware solution for low cost sitting posture detection, second step is to find a suitable strategy of sitting posture detection and the last step is to correlate the time-ordered sitting posture sequences with sitting activity. The author initiated a prototype type of sensing system called IntelliChair for sitting posture detection. Two experiments are proceeded in order to determine the hardware architecture of IntelliChair system. The prototype looks at the sensor selection and integration of various sensor and indicates the best for a low cost, non-intrusive system. Subsequently, this research implements signal process theory to explore the frequency feature of sitting posture, for the purpose of determining a suitable sampling rate for IntelliChair system. For second and third step, ten subjects are recruited for the sitting posture data and sitting activity data collection. The former dataset is collected byasking subjects to perform certain pre-defined sitting postures on IntelliChair and it is used for posture recognition experiment. The latter dataset is collected by asking the subjects to perform their normal sitting activity routine on IntelliChair for four hours, and the dataset is used for activity modelling and recognition experiment. For the posture recognition experiment, two Support Vector Machine (SVM) based classifiers are trained (one for spine postures and the other one for leg postures), and their performance evaluated. Hidden Markov Model is utilized for sitting activity modelling and recognition in order to establish the selected sitting activities from sitting posture sequences. After experimenting with possible sensors, Force Sensing Resistor (FSR) is selected as the pressure sensing unit for IntelliChair. Eight FSRs are mounted on the seat and back of a chair to gather haptic (i.e., touch-based) posture information. Furthermore, the research explores the possibility of using alternative non-intrusive sensing technology (i.e. vision based Kinect Sensor from Microsoft) and find out the Kinect sensor is not reliable for sitting posture detection due to the joint drifting problem. ▼ This thesis presents results from EDAM modelling and observing ionospheric phenomena in the European sector. EDAM used GPS TEC to create 3-D electron density grids that are then used to create vertical Total Electron Content maps. This enabled observations of ionospheric phenomena in the European sector. Alongside EDAM, SuperDARN potential plots and Ionosondes among other data sources are used to help confirm and verify the modelling results. Statistical results are presented of the main ionospheric trough, obtained from EDAM with assimilated GPS TEC from September to December 2002. The results not only considered the width and depth of the trough but are also used to parameterise the shape of the trough in terms of a set of parameters. The parameters were used in a previous study that used NIMS TEC measurements and tomographic imaging. This study has been published in Annales Geophysicae by Parker et al. (2018) (Reuse of this text is allowed for this Chapter by way of Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 License. There are changes in the text, but the content is the same.) Observations of the TOI and SED are presented using EDAM assimilated GPS VTEC maps, difference VTEC maps, electron density difference height profiles and SuperDARN electric potential plots. The evolution of the TOI and SED are presented over the Western European sector on 30 September 2002. The results have also considered IMF and solar wind data from ACE, indices such as the Kp index, Dst index and DMSP data plots. Modified Taylor Diagrams are used to show the performance of EDAM and IRI with respect to a truth receiver between September 2002 and August 2003. The diagrams are categorised into three different parameters to focus on; the time of day, individual satellites, and Kp index. A time period where the EDAM modelled results underperformed compared to the truth data as shown by Modified Taylor Diagrams is discussed, where the cause may have been down to a number of factors including Sporadic E.
